It’s OK not to know Can anyone remember when it became compulsory to have all the answers? I must have missed that memo. There’s plenty of things I don’t know and currently I’m busying myself learning about birds, gardening and how to speak Italian. Does not knowing these things make me a weak person? Certainly not, so why do many managers put themselves under unnecessary pressure to have all the answers when that’s not a prerequisite of the job and all it does is make them stressed and miserable? (Of course there are other managers who forge ahead under the delusion that they do, in fact, have all the answers which generally makes everyone in their team stressed and miserable, but that’s a topic for another blog...) Not knowing something is not, in itself, a sign of weakness; in fact being self aware enough to recognise the need for personal development is considered a strength. Daniel Goleman recognised it as such in his excellent book Emotional Intelligence: Why it Can Matter More Than IQ (well worth a read if you get the chance). When I deliver “Train the Trainer” or “Presentation Skills” courses one of the questions I’m often asked is “What if someone asks me a question I don’t know the answer to?”. Well, assuming it’s not something basic like “What is your name?” then what’s the problem with saying “I’m not sure, but I’ll find out and get back to you.”? Many’s the time I’ve spoken to managers who won’t access free, professional coaching simply because it might make them appear weak. Andy Murray has a coach, does that make him a weak tennis player? Usain Bolt has a coach, does that make him a weak runner? Not at all; in the sports arena it’s apparently fine to have a coach, so why not in the world of management? Management is a tough job which often doesn’t win you any friends so don’t be afraid to ask for, or seek out, support if you need it. And if anyone thinks any the worse of you for doing so then I’d suggest it’s them that really has the problem. Beth Pipe is a Learning and Development Professional and freelance writer.
