Clothes Maketh the Man (or Woman!) About dressing the part
“Dress down” Fridays often strike fear into the hearts of employees and present headaches to employers. What on the surface of it appears to be a chance to escape the shackles of corporate dress becomes a minefield of unwritten, and often unspoken, dress code expectations. Clothes are a very important part of how we express who we are; look at how much importance we attach to uniforms, from police to nurses, from the army to Gordon Ramsey; we have an expectation of how people should dress in certain situations. The office is no different, and even if your office is a “suited and booted” environment, seemingly eliminating variation in the appearance of your employee, people will still find ways to push the boundaries of the dress code perhaps by wearing a loud tie, or a garish piece of jewellery. And if your office environment is a little less formal then don’t kid yourself there isn’t a uniform; take a moment to look around you and see how similarly most people are dressed. The last time London was under the threat of May Day riots the banking establishments, concerned that their employees would be possible targets, started by instructing everyone to dress down and then went one step further by saying “no, this time we really mean it; dress down properly.” Having worked in the City I can vouch for the fact that most male lawyers and bankers are still easily identifiable on dress down days sporting their “uniform” of chinos and a blue shirt. So why is clothing so important? As a bit of a rebel this is a question I often ask myself – I don’t drop IQ points when I take my suit off, so why should it matter? There are two main reasons it matters; first off it very clearly matters to other people, so if you want to make a good first impression you need to dress in the appropriate/ expected manner. Harsh though it sounds to us rebels people make decisions based on how you look, so if you want them to employ you/ buy from you/ give you a promotion then you’ll need to meet those expectations. “Don’t dress for the job you have, dress for the job you want” as the saying goes. And secondly it actually does matter to you; we all have outfits we feel fabulous in and those we wear on the days we just want to hide away, so if you’ve got a big interview or presentation looming it makes good sense to dig out your best “I could take on the world” outfit – just so long as it’s not going to scare anyone too much.
