‘Better Beginnings’ for babies and toddlers Adoptive parents are being sought for babies and toddlers across Cumbria in a new campaign launching this month. Cumbria County Council’s adoption team is running a recruitment drive called ‘Better Beginnings’ that aims to place the children with carers who initially foster until the child can be legally adopted. Fostering a child prior to adoption enables the new parents to bring a baby into their lives at an earlier stage and build up a relationship and bond early on in the child’s life. While adoption cannot be guaranteed in every case, it also means children will be able to move in with their possible future permanent families in loving homes before lengthy legal procedures are finalised. Cumbria’s Better Beginnings campaign comes in the wake of Government plans to speed up the adoption process and provide children with stable homes as soon as possible. To support the Better Beginnings drive, Cumbria’s adoption team will be holding an information roadshow in Carlisle’s Lanes shopping centre between 10am and 4pm on Saturday 18 August, where people will be able to find out more about becoming an adopter and get the opportunity to talk informally to members of the team. Councillor Anne Burns, Cumbria County Council’s cabinet member for children’s social care, said: “Cumbria’s Better Beginnings is a fantastic initiative as it’s vital that children get the safe and loving home they deserve. “Waiting sometimes many months before being adopted can be a very destabilising experience so I really welcome attempts to put children with permanent families as soon as possible. “Our roadshow will be a really good opportunity for Cumbrians to find out more about Better Beginnings and other aspects of adoption and fostering so I hope plenty of people will come and talk to us on the day to find out more.” For further details about adoption in Cumbria call 01539 713312, visit Cumbria County Council’s website at www.cumbria.gov.uk or look up the adoption team on Facebook at www.facebook.com/adoptionforcumbria
