New ideas to consider when creating your CV I’m Just A... Let me warn you right now, if you ever find yourself in a career coaching session with me there are three little words I never want to hear: “I’m just a...” usually followed by something along the lines of administrator/ mum/ receptionist etc. Why does it bother me so much? Because a) it completely undermines the fabulous skills set you have and b) have you ever stopped to consider what would happen if all the administrators or receptionists failed to turn up for work one day? Chaos! Plus if you have that mindset how are you ever going to do yourselves justice when selling yourself on your CV? When it comes to writing your CV here’s a thought, start by not writing it. Most people sit down and launch straight in to some sort of formatted CV and try to fill in the blanks and end up staring blankly, and desperately, at the large white spaces on the screen. Here’s my idea; pour yourself a nice cuppa (or glass of wine depending on the time of day), grab a good old fashioned pen and paper, put some decent music on in the background and start jotting down some of the things you do each day. They don’t need to be in any particular order, just doodle them all down. This will give you a list of your duties - but not your skills - and it’s a fabulous starting point. Next start to look for common threads that exhibit the skills you have, for example: “Maintaining the MDs diary” and “Organising the office Christmas party” demonstrate your organisational skills. “Creating spreadsheets to support the sales team” and “Collating and formatting business reports” demonstrate your IT skills. Keep going until you have a good sized list of skills that you can pull together into your CV which should now be less of a list of your job responsibilities and more a demonstration of the many skills you have. For example: Communication Skills · Accomplished communicator. Proven ability to work with customers on a face to face basis to deliver high levels of customer service. · Skilled at handling complaints and diffusing difficult situations within a demanding customer focused environment. You get my drift!

What makes you so different? Are you the only person in the world doing your job? Thought not. Are you the only person you know doing your job? Unlikely. Anyone who’s been involved with sales or marketing at any point in their career will be familiar with the USP: Unique Selling Point; that one thing that no other product has. It’s a vital part of many sales campaigns and should also be something you think about when marketing yourself either for internal promotions or on the external job market. What makes you different to everyone else out there? It’s something I need to pay close attention to; as a freelance Learning and Development Consultant and a freelance writer I’m aware that there are many thousands of others out there doing much the same sort of work as me with much the same sort of background, so what makes me any different? The answer is me. Or, in your case, you. While there will be many other people working within your field, you are the only person with your exact mix of skills, abilities and experience, so make sure you tell everyone that. Any professional worth their salt will have a LinkedIn profile (mines here if you’re interested) but many profiles are at best bland and at worst dull and boring. “Proficient user of Excel”. So? “Managed a team of 4 people.” Whoop de doo. “Responsible for maintaining office supplies.” Break out the champagne. You need to sell yourself, not regurgitate your Job Description. What did YOU bring to the role? What skills do YOU have? What did YOU achieve? And liven up the language a little. Word has a thesaurus but most people never use it, hence CVs and online profiles are littered with “responsible for”, “managed” and “liaised with”. On my version of Word you simply highlight the word, right click on it and select Synonyms and then Thesaurus. This will give you a whole host of inspirational words to play with so “managed” could become “achieved”, “accomplished” or “succeeded”, all of which are a little more interesting. Of course you don’t want to go mad and have potential recruiters reaching for the dictionary, but you do need to make yourself stand out in a competitive marketplace where each vacancy is fought over. Or tussled over. Or wrestled over. You get the picture. Beth Pipe is a Learning and Development Professional and freelance writer.
