Fire Service volunteer recruitment drive Volunteers are needed to spread the fire safety message and help keep Cumbria’s communities safe. Cumbria County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service is looking for new faces to join its community safety team and get involved with a range of activities and initiatives around the county. Volunteers assist the work of the Fire and Rescue Service in a variety of roles from assisting or carrying out home fire safety checks and fitting free smoke alarms to delivering Heartstart life-support courses. They are also involved in: • Assisting at events and community days. • Getting involved in campaigns and speaking to residents about community and road safety issues. • Introducing emergency plans to communities to reduce the impact of fire or flooding on peoples’ lives. • Raising awareness of the Fire and Rescue Service at community events with Firefit activities including the climbing wall and soccer cages. Each member of the community volunteer team is given varied training, a uniform and expenses and operates within a formal structure to ensure high standards of service are maintained. As well as learning new skills and helping to keep the county safe, signing up as a volunteer is a good way to meet new people and give something back to the community. Currently Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service has around 80 volunteers county-wide and is looking to boost that number by taking on new volunteers. And with there being no such thing as a regular volunteer, people from all backgrounds and ages are being encouraged to come forward and commit as little or as much time as they can spare.

We keep it Simple and get Results Did you know: • We have been successfully providing a cost effective means of recruiting staff for nearly 8 years in the South Lakeland and North Lancashire area?

“Being a volunteer can be highly rewarding and it’s a great opportunity to be part of our team.”

• The way we focus towards a readership in the employment market has helped us to build a reputation for attracting a wide range of applicants for our advertisers?

Barrow-based volunteer Derek Plumb added: “I have been actively involved with Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service as a community volunteer for almost two years and have carried out a variety of activities including home safety visits, fire safety talks in schools and the road awareness programme as part of the National Citizenship scheme.

• Our rates could save you up to two thirds of your recruitment budget?

Cumbria’s Chief Fire Officer Dominic Harrison said: “Volunteers play a vital role in Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service. “Nowadays fire prevention and educating people about the dangers of fires is a major focus of our work so our volunteers are absolutely key to enabling us to get out into communities and deliver the fire safety message that saves lives.

“The work I have been involved in as a community volunteer has enabled me to give something back to the community and to work with members of the public in providing vital information and helping to prevent house fires, keep people safe and respond effectively to emergencies.” Anybody interested in becoming a Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service volunteer should call 01768 812551 or email volunteers@cumbriafire.gov.uk for an application pack or to find out more information.

Our errant Prince Harry hit the headlines again last year after a less than loyal friend leaked compromising pictures of him to the press. Many argue it’s inappropriate behaviour for the third in line to the throne, others say we should leave him alone; he’s just a “typical young man old letting off steam”. However, he’s also a serving officer in our armed forces and whatever your view it does bring into question how much attention an employer should pay to the things their employees get up to in private. For the majority of us our anonymity saves us from our exploits making tabloid news, but our escapades may still make it into the social media and that means they’re every bit as public albeit a little trickier to find.

Don’t miss our next issue...

Prince Harry faced the double whammy of a dressing down from within his family as well as an “interview without coffee” from his commanding officer; and I know which of those I’d be most worried about. But, were he not a prince, would his family and his employers ever even have been aware of what he’d gotten up to in Las Vegas? The answer is yes, quite possibly. Through the media of Facebook, Twitter etc. anyone could publish a picture of you while you remain in blissful ignorance. And, even if you did discover it and ask them to delete it, if they refused you could have to resort to legal measures to get it removed. So how do you find out what’s out there?

Available free from hundreds of outlets throughout the area. See www.employment-pages.co.uk for our full list of stockists

Sites like Yasni and 123People will scour the internet and locate all the publicly available information about you that’s out there: social media, phone book, Amazon Wish Lists, reviews you may have written, appearances in the local paper etc. They search on name only (for now) so if you have a popular name you could possibly remain hidden amongst thousands of others, but if you have a less common name, say like Beth Pipe, then you’re somewhat easier to find. Even those who have never ventured onto social media sites would be well advised to check their internet footprint. Whether you believe it to be ethical or not, the reality is that many employers use these sites to screen potential employees and check up on existing ones (and if you’re a parent you may also want to check what information is out there on your kids.) Whatever your position Prince Harry has amply demonstrated once again that it’s important to control your media image; oh, and you may want to think carefully about who you choose to party with. Beth Pipe is a Learning and Development Professional and freelance writer. You can find more of her professional work here: bethpipe.hubpages.com. You can also follow her at @cumbrianrambler on Twitter.
