Serving the people of Cumbria

Say you saw it in Employment Pages

cumbria.gov.uk

“There’s no such thing as a job for life these days” is something I’ve heard a lot, especially since the latest recession kicked in and to some extent it’s true; people these days often have 2 or even 3 different careers. Of course if you’re the Queen of England then a career change isn’t really an option, and one does wonder what one would put on one’s CV if one ever did decide to try something new. Not many employers have to concern themselves with what makes an appropriate reward for someone who’s given 60 years service, but I think something rather more than the traditional Carriage Clock would be in order. I did a little research to see how many other long serving individuals there were out there and I came across a few interesting stories, like Roy Harvie who has worked for Waitrose for 53 years, and Steve Anderson who worked for South West Trains for 50 years before taking his well earned retirement. These stories are often picked up by the local press and employers are keen to go on the record and say what a valuable contribution the individual in question has made over the preceding decades; but do they say the same thing behind closed doors? Are the long serving employees seen as the valuable sources of experience and knowledge that they should be, or are they viewed more as “stick-in-the-muds” resistant to change and “too set in their ways.”? (After many years of supporting organisations through change I’d say the correlation between length of service and resistance to change is generally pretty weak.) Over the years I’ve heard many recruiting managers say they’re looking for “bright, bubbly, dynamic” individuals to join their team, but as someone who’s managed people for many years I’d find a team full of people like that rather wearing. Of course it’s great to have people in your team who are always striving to move onwards and upwards, but that means they’re not going to stay with you long, so where is your stability going to come from? Enter the long service employees; these are the guys who can help you train the new starters, look after things when you’re not in the office and offer a different perspective when you’re facing challenges or changes. Every line manager could use a “right hand man” and these guys are perfect for the role. Beth Pipe is a Learning and Development Professional and freelance writer. Making the Grade

About making yourself stand out on your CV There’s been a lot of talk in the press recently about the relative merits of O’levels and GCSEs. I’m not here to wade into the argument one way or another but from the coverage I’ve read and heard so far it strikes me that some academics are missing the point with their argument. During a radio interview one teacher argued that it didn’t matter if there were lots of A* grades as parents could be reassured that the children in her care would be stretched to the maximum of their ability and not just tasked with “only” achieving the highest grade. So, on behalf of employers, here’s my question to that teacher: “How do I, as an employer, differentiate on a CV between those students who have ‘only just’ achieved an A* and those who have gone above and beyond it?”

We keep it Simple and get Results Did you know: • We have been successfully providing a cost effective means of recruiting staff for 8 years in the South Lakeland and North Lancashire area? • The way we focus towards a readership in the employment market has helped us to build a reputation for attracting a wide range of applicants for our advertisers?

How do you stand out from the crowd? If, like me, you’ve been around the block a few times then there’s a lot of stuff on your CV that relates to the experience you’ve picked up along the way and your educational qualifications carry less merit and a little more dust than they once did; but when you’re a student/ school leaver with very limited experience your educational grades are much more important. There are some inspiring stories around, like a young lady in the USA who managed to make it into Harvard with a non-existent home life. With youth unemployment at record levels each appropriate job vacancy attracts tens, if not hundreds, of CVs; so if you’re one of the many applying for one of the few jobs, then how do you stand out against the dozens other candidates with similar grades? The answer is the same as the advice to anyone writing a CV; what makes you different? If your grades don’t make you stand out then what does? Outside of school interests or hobbies? Voluntary work? Other school achievements such as being a prefect or Head Boy/ Girl? Focus on the skills you’ve learned along the way; organisational skills, communication skills, teamwork to name a few. Perhaps you’ve received a school award for attendance or something else which may mark you out from the crowd. Don’t underestimate, or undersell yourself; when it comes to applying for jobs, if you don’t blow your own trumpet, no one else will blow it for you. And make sure you know why you’re applying for the jobs you are, when I asked one school leaver why she wanted to work for me her honest but less than inspiring answer was “Because me mum said I had to get a job.” Sadly she was unsuccessful on that occasion.
