Are you a 5 Star Manager?
These days most of us will read an online review before we head off and buy something; we may not end up buying it from Argos or Amazon but we’ll most likely take time to have a read and see what other people thought before we invest our hard earned cash. To be honest I don’t really trust most online reviews, someone will always hate it for one reason or another whereas others may have a vested interest in giving a 5 star seal of approval to something; free merchandise or writers paid to boost sales/ site traffic. That aside, I still like to have a read and it struck me, as I was reading the latest reviews for a pair of walking boots, wouldn’t it be great if before you took a new job you could read online reviews of your prospective new manager? I can’t imagine it would go down too well with most managers, but why not? Before we employ someone new we take up references and these days check them out on LinkedIn and other social networking sites, so why shouldn’t prospective employees be able to check out their new manager more thoroughly? And, if we bought in a system like that, how would it impact on the actions of managers whose behaviours fall a little short of desirable? How soon before an organisation realised that their failure to recruit into a particular role was down to poor management? And then how long before they decided to do something about it? Of course online reviews of managers will never become a reality; far too many opportunities for libel cases, but I guarantee it would drive up traffic to the company website as we all have a nose into what our replacement made of our old manager. I shall leave you with a challenge for the braver managers among you: at your next team meeting or away day, ask your team to write anonymous “online reviews” for you and see what they have to say; their feedback will be invaluable to you.
