Connecting people in your local community The search is on to find people in Cumbria who have time on their hands and are willing to join the growing number of volunteers who help connect people in the local community to essential services. Stepping forward as a volunteer can be fun, develop confidence and skills or even improve the chances of getting or progressing a job. Cumbria County Council supports voluntary social car schemes and community minibuses to help get people out and about where other public or private transport is not available. Countywide there are nearly 50 co-ordinators (some of whom drive as well), over 270 volunteer drivers for the voluntary social car scheme and over 20 minibus drivers for our community minibuses who enable individuals and “not-for-profit” community groups get out and about. Mileage, telephone and postage expenses are reimbursed. Cllr Keith Little, Cumbria County Council’s Cabinet member responsible for Highways and Transportation said: “Volunteers are part of the fabric of Cumbrian life and our community transport schemes are a great way for people to put a little back into local life, while at the same time being properly reimbursed. In some rural areas where bus routes are not a feasible or economic solution, we rely on more responsive community transport to help those without their own cars to get around. The schemes always need people willing to help out, and we’re particularly keen to talk to people to see if we can make good use of any free time they have.” We are looking to recruit:
Volunteer co-ordinators: receives telephone requests for transport; arranges a river to do the journey; collect and check drivers’ claim forms.
Volunteer Drivers: pick up neighbours in their own car; collect cash fare & give receipt. Volunteer Minibus Drivers: vehicle walk-round; drives 16 seater accessible
minibus; collect groups from pre-arranged pick up points; ensures passengers are safely seated in the vehicle; return the vehicle after the journey.
Derrick Martin, Workington Driver and Co-ordinator says: “I find it fun and fulfilling. I also enjoy helping people and being active and useful within the community. I get a lot out of it myself.” Hetty, one of Derrick’s customers, says: “Derrick is very good, pleasant, helpful and we really get on – I’d be lost without him. I’m really grateful for the service as I have no other way to travel.” Leaflets and posters about how to become a volunteer are being distributed around libraries, Local Links and council offices.
