Just do it!
How much easier is it to say “I can’t”, “I shouldn’t” or “I’m too scared” than “I can”, “I will” and “What the hell, I’ll try it anyway and see what happens”? The words “You can’t” or “It’s not possible” are like a red rag to a bull with me I’m afraid; too many times we’re told what we can and can’t do in life and too many times we listen without questioning “what if...?” I’m not some sort of super human being; I’m just like everyone else, except that I’ve never taken “no” for an answer. I spend a lot of time working with those seeking employment and too often I hear them say “I can’t do that because...” when that is the exact moment you really need to get your game head on and go for it. Have we all lost trust in ourselves and our own abilities to get things done? Why do we listen so readily to what other people are telling us? And why do our nay saying inner voices so easily drown out everything else? During assertiveness workshops I’ve often heard it said that assertive people don’t feel nervous. WRONG! I’m scared of heights but made myself to go to the top of the CN Tower and stand on the glass floor. I’m terrified of flying but refuse to let it stop me going on holiday and as a freelance writer I’m not altogether sure where my mortgage is coming from from one month to the next but does that stop me? Of course not. It’s not about whether or not you feel nervous, it’s about whether you let that dictate what you can and can’t do. Before Becky Adlington went out to swim the 800m freestyle in Beijing she is quoted as saying “I felt so nervous before I went out there that I had to lie down to stop myself being sick”, but that didn’t stop her not only winning gold but annihilating the rest of the field in the process. Life is full of challenges and opportunities for us to back down and hide away rather than come out fighting. So what’s the easy answer? Well there isn’t one other than “just do it anyway”. Will you feel scared? Yes. Will the world end? Unlikely. Will you be glad you did it? Almost certainly. Beth Pipe is a Learning and Development Professional and freelance writer.
