Mentors sought for young business stars Business mentors are needed to help tutor Cumbria’s budding entrepreneurs. The Giving Nation Challenge – a social enterprise programme for secondary schools in Cumbria run in partnership between the county council’s Children’s Services Directorate and The Citizenship Foundation – is looking for local business people to provide advice, guidance and support to pupils taking part in next year’s contest.

We keep it

As part of the Giving Nation Challenge, students work in teams to identify an issue within their community then set up a social enterprise to meet that need. Each secondary school that signs up for the Challenge is able to access a grant of £450 from the Citizenship Foundation. The grant is used as start up capital to enable students to get their ideas off the ground and the Challenge is then run internally in each school. Students are required to ensure that the business model for their social enterprise generates sufficient income so that the project can be sustainable. Each school that takes part in the Challenge sends a winning team to represent their school in the Cumbria final where they present their ideas to a panel of judges to compete for a regional trophy. The aim of the Challenge is to help young people develop the essential skills needed for their future, whether they go on to set up their own business or become enterprising employees. Ideally business people with a social enterprise background are being sought to team up with schools. Supported by Cumbria Social Enterprise Partnership, the mentor scheme was introduced to the Giving Nation Challenge in Cumbria for the first time as a pilot this year and proved a big success with pupils and teachers as well as the mentors themselves. Krysia Pantechis from Kendal-based KPI Solutions Ltd, who mentored pupils from The Queen Katherine School this year, said: “Seeing the interest from the students and the enthusiasm of the teachers for the project was great and a rewarding experience to be part of.

Julia Winder, Cumbria County Council’s Enterprise Education Officer, said: “Volunteer business mentors have a key role to play in helping guide teams taking part in the Challenge by passing on their experience, knowledge and skills. “They were a big success this year and it would be a real boost to next year’s competition if we can find more social enterprise experts to come forward and help support a new generation of potential Cumbrian business stars.” If you are from a social enterprise and interested in supporting any of the above, please contact Julia Winder julia.winder@cumbria.gov.uk or 01229 407556 to discuss further.
