Excuses -v- Reasons Quite an ironic title for this piece seeing as I’ve been meaning to write it for several weeks now, but something has always gotten in the way. A reason for not writing it or just a poor excuse for my lack of prioritisation? But surely I’m not alone; can I be the only person who sees an interesting email whilst also juggling a dozen or so other tasks and means to get back to said email a little later on, only to realise a week or so later that I never actually did go back to it after all? I thought not. So what’s the answer?

I keep meaning to clean it out... The thing with time management is that there’s no one right answer, if there were there’d only be one book on the subject and we’d all own it. Many years ago when I said I didn’t have time to do something a wise colleague asked “If I gave you a million pounds for doing it, would you find the time to do it?” When I said that I would, they pointed out that lack of time was a poor excuse for a lack of prioritisation.

Sometimes we just get into a pattern of doing things that’s hard to break. Many managers I’ve worked with over the years say they don’t have the time to tackle people about poor performance, but they do appear to have the time to deal with the constant additional pressures that result from covering for the underperformer. “I don’t have the time” is their excuse when “I’m not sure how to go about doing it” is often the real reason.

The first step to improving things is to sit down and be brutally honest with yourself about the things that aren’t getting done. The Five Whys model is a great tool for this and it couldn’t be simpler; start by asking yourself “why” something isn’t getting done and then keep on asking yourself “why” until you get to the heart of the problem. And once you’ve got to the heart of the problem the question becomes “so what can I do about that?”. You may not like the answer, but at least you’ll be all out of excuses. Cumbria in the running for national enterprise funding Partnership working to address key gaps through the Countywide Enterprise Education group has led to a joint bid to raise the profile of self-employment and entrepreneurship among young people in Cumbria. The bid, co-written by Cumbria County Council and submitted by Furness Enterprise Partnership on behalf of the group, has recently been shortlisted for national funding. If successful, the application will provide nearly £50,000 to inspire, engage, equip and support a new generation of budding young Cumbrian entrepreneurs. Funding will enable five events to take place across Cumbria, organised and run with young local entrepreneurs and partners focusing on entrepreneurship/self-employment as a career option with 1,000 students aged 14-24. Events will include inspirational speakers, workshops developing business ideas, information on funding, support and advice available. A ‘start your own business’ toolkit will also be provided at the events offering tips for setting up in business featuring a student friendly business plan template, useful contacts, websites and publications and video case studies showcasing a diverse range of young Cumbrian entrepreneurs to inspire young people to consider starting a business. A student countywide Enterprise Competition to plan/design innovative products/ services with seed funding and mentorship for the winners will also be launched with the funding. Lead applicant, Furness Enterprise Partnership, has 22 years’ experience of delivering successful business support/entrepreneurship programmes. While the Furness Enterprise Partnership has submitted the bid on behalf of the group, the scheme is a collaborative effort involving Cumbria County Council, local entrepreneurs, schools, sixth-forms, further education colleges, The University of Cumbria, enterprise agencies and Inspira - who provided letters of support for the bid. Furness Enterprise Partnership said: “We are delighted to have reached this stage. Not only will the project “inspire, engage, equip and support a new generation of budding Cumbrian Entrepreneurs”, but it will also showcase the talent and knowledge of current young entrepreneurs and raise the profile of enterprise in Cumbria.” Councillor Anne Burns, Cumbria County Council’s cabinet member for Children’s Services, said: If successful it will make a massive difference to enterprise education in the county and could help nurture a new generation of business stars. I’m delighted Cumbria County Council has played a key role in developing the submission by bringing different organisations together and shaping the application.”
