More foster families needed in 2014 More foster families are needed in Cumbria to help meet the predicted need for at least 1,200 new foster families across the North West this year, according to figures out today from the Fostering Network. The Fostering Network annually releases recruitment targets for fostering services across the UK. These represent the minimum number of foster families that fostering services need to recruit over the next 12 months in order to provide homes for all the children in and coming into care who need them. The county council currently supports over 200 fostering households looking after children in care in Cumbria. More foster carers are needed not only to replace the 14 per cent who retired last year, but to ensure that children who come into care find foster carers who are right for them. Without enough foster families, some children may find themselves living a long way from family, school and friends, being split up from brothers and sisters, or being placed with a foster carer who is not suited to meeting their specific needs. The fostering team will be running a campaign to recruit more foster carers, with TV adverts, radio adverts and drop in events. The first event is on Saturday 8 February from 10.00- 14.00 at the Crown and Mitre Hotel in Carlisle. Cllr Anne Burns, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said “With a wider pool of foster carers we can find the right foster home for each child, first time. It’s important that children are placed with a family that will help them thrive and keep them close to family and friends. “Make it your new year’s resolution to find out more about fostering and either go to our website Cumbria.gov.uk/fostering or call the team to arrange an informal chat 0303 333 1216.” Robert Tapsfield, chief executive of the Fostering Network, said: “Children and young people come into care for a wide range of reasons, but all come needing professional, dedicated and compassionate support. Foster carers are remarkable people who open their homes to some of society’s most vulnerable and disadvantaged children and young people. “We urgently need people who believe that they have the right skills and qualities to foster to come forward and make a long lasting positive difference to the life of a child.” For more information contact communications adviser Alice Gill on 01228 226241 or alice.gill@cumbria.gov.uk
