That’s why Cumbria County Council is asking Cumbrians if they have room for two (or three) children in the run-up to national adoption week. There are over 70 children waiting to be adopted and a third of these are part of brother and sister groups. Councillor Anne Burns, Cumbria County Council s Cabinet member for Children’s service said: “The bond between brothers and sisters is unique, and where it’s best for the children, we will do all we can to keep them together. Being adopted together can help children settle into a new family and have a positive sense of who they are.” In the run up to National Adoption Week the council will be raising awareness of the brother and sister groups waiting for adoption in Cumbria. Without enough adopters who are able to give these children a loving, secure and permanent home together, brothers and sisters will wait longer for a family or may even have to be split up and adopted separately. The campaign will be sharing information on sibling groups waiting for adoption and how people thinking about adoption can take the next step. For those who want to chat to a member of the team to find out more there will be two drop-in events as follows: Saturday 8th November from 10.00-14.00 at Tullie House, Carlisle. Thursday 13th November from 18.00-20.00 at the Riverside Hotel, Kendal. Councillor Burns, added: “Adopting a child is a big decision. Adopting brothers and sisters together can make it seem even bigger, but the county council provide both financial and practical support to adopters and the children. So my message to anyone thinking about adopting is is don’t let the practicalities of adopting a sibling group stop you from taking the next step, because we will be with you every step of the way. All you need to think about is; could you provide love, time and commitment to a child? Do you have the energy and health to provide a long-term family? If the answer is yes, then pick up the phone.” • National Adoption Week runs from Monday 3rd-9th November. • Drop-in day Saturday 8th November 10.00-14.00 Tullie House, Carlisle. • Drop-in evening Thursday 13th November 18.00-20.00 Riverside Hotel, Kendal. • For more info: Website – www.cumbria.gov.uk/adoption Facebook – facebook.com/cumbriafosteringandadoption Twitter - @fosteradoptccc Email – adoption@cumbria.gov.uk Phone – 01539 713312 • There are 9 sibling groups waiting for adoption in Cumbria. There are 7 sets of 2 children, and 3 groups of 3 children. • National Adoption Week also attracts people wanting to find out about their own adoption or about a child they put up for adoption. We have advice and support for these people. Please contact adoption.support@cumbria.gov.uk or 01228 221528
