General Vacancies continued... Holehird, Windermere, Cumbria

Holehird is a nursing home providing care for adults with an age range from 18 upwards who have complex health needs. You will work in a friendly and informal home set in beautiful surroundings.

Council helps keep Penrith Jobcentre open

Care Assistant – Ref: LCD2681

Cumbria County Council recently thanked the Department for Work & Pensions for keeping the Penrith Jobcentre open following councillors’ expression of concerns about closure.

A full time annual average salary of: £12,000 per annum. (this includes enhancements for any unsociable and weekend work undertaken) Hours: Full time, flexible working hours available, part time hours available. Some weekend work is required. You will be involved in working alongside a professional healthcare team in supporting people who use our services with all aspects of their daily living needs. Previous experience is desirable but not essential as we offer a comprehensive training with support plan. You must be willing to undertake mandatory training. We also support and encourage individuals with their personal professional development plan and further education and training is available.

Councillors had stressed the importance of the centre to local people in recent communications and meetings with DWP officials. The DWP recently confirmed in a letter to the council that it will “ensure continued customer service” and keep the Friargate Jobcentre open. The DWP said it was encouraged by the “positive responses” from local voices, including the county council, who said they wished to “work more closely or in partnership with DWP to further support us in delivering an enhanced customer service”. This could involve delivering DWP services from other local buildings. Council Leader Stewart Young said: “We believed that closure would have had a massive impact on disadvantaged people in this sparsely populated rural area. It is vital that there is a face-to-face, confidential service accessible to local people. “Expecting people to travel to Carlisle instead would have had severe financial and logistical implications for individuals and families. For some, it would have been all but impossible.”

The home and organisation both provide excellent opportunities for career development.

Councillors also stressed that any shift to delivering services online or through new premises needs more close working with the county council beforehand so local solutions can be found.

You will be required to be flexible to a weekly rota.

Councillors confirmed that the county council is also looking to change the way it delivers some services, so early, joined-up planning together is the best way to do this to find new opportunities

You will also have empathy with Leonard Cheshire Disability’s ethos and value base. Leonard Cheshire Disability welcomes applications from all sections of the community. A satisfactory disclosure check is required for this post. To apply please visit www.leonardcheshire.org/jobs and search for the reference number. If you do not have internet access, please contact 01902 792060, quoting the reference number.

www.LCDisability.org

Cllr Young added: “The proposed closure of Penrith Jobcentre was a shock. As Eden is a large, sparsely populated place, there would have been a yawning gap for many people in getting an accessible local service. I’m delighted that the DWP have listened to us and are now willing to work with local partners to explore the best way for them to deliver this service in Penrith.” Cllr Ian Stewart, Cumbria County Council’s Cabinet member for Community Services, said: “Nobody is under any illusions that things don’t have to change given the scale of cutbacks in the public sector. But where there’s change there can be opportunity. These opportunities hadn’t been properly explored at the point the DWP were proposing to close the Jobcentre. But it’s great news that they understand the issues and are willing to come up with new ways of tackling this.”

Cumbrians urged to drop in on the big budget challenge People in Cumbria are being encouraged to get involved and learn more about the biggest challenge the county council has ever faced in terms of cutbacks and changes to the way it runs services. A series of drop-in events start across the county next week to help people understand more about the council’s drive to cut £213m from its annual spending by 2018. The council started its ‘Securing Your Future’ consultation last month and the drop-in events present an opportunity for the public to learn more about the scale of the task ahead and what specific savings the council is proposing to make next year. The county council has already warned that 1,800 further jobs will have to go from the organisation over the next three years. It is consulting on a number of public-facing savings proposals, as well as asking the public for their views on what it can do differently to save money and retain services. One key question is whether Cumbria should save money by having a unitary council or councils rather than county and district councils. The drop-in events are just one of the ways that people can get involved in the consultation lasting until 20 January 2015. Cumbrians can also share their views online at cumbria.gov.uk/budgetconsultation or by picking a copy of the budget consultation booklet from their local library. Cllr Patricia Bell, Cumbria County Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet member for resources, said: “This is not something the council can do on its own. Our partners, our contractors and the public will all feel the effect as we lose more than one pound in four from our budget. Therefore it’s vital that people engage now to understand what these cuts mean for them. “More than three quarters of our savings this year are coming from within the four walls of the organisation - by working more efficiently, reducing our managers and cutting our spend. But some savings do effect the public, which is why we need to have conversation with them through events like these drop-in sessions.”
