Fostering drop-in events offer chance to find out more Following a hugely successful Foster Care Fortnight, which saw over 1000 visitors to the council’s fostering website, people interested in becoming foster carers are being reminded about fostering drop-in sessions being held across the county this week. The sessions provide an informal opportunity to chat about foster care with an experienced member of the council’s team and find out more about what it takes to be a foster carer. Events are being held in Kendal and Carlisle: · 27/06/15 – Carlisle East Fire Station, 10:00-14:00. · 30/06/15 – Kendal Fire Station, 17:30-19:30. With over 670 children in care in Cumbria and around 10% of foster carers retiring each year, there is always a need to recruit more foster carers. For the vast majority of children in Cumbria, a foster home can provide the stability and support needed to secure a better future. There is a particular need for foster carers who can provide long terms placements, older children and sibling groups. Cllr Anne Burns, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said: “These drop-in sessions are a great way to find out more. We’ve loads of information on our website, but sometimes you just need to speak to someone face to face. The council staff at these sessions are really approachable and will be able to answer any questions you might have. “There are many myths about who can become a foster carer, but what really matters is that you are committed to children and able to offer a stable and secure home. We need foster carers to care for all sorts of children, but we’re particularly looking for people who would like to care for older children or on a long term basis.” To find out more about fostering in Cumbria, visit www.cumbria.gov.uk/fostering, or call 0303 333 1216.
