“What is the recipe for success to become a commis chef who values and is valued by the team in which he or she works?” I’ve been with English Lakes here at The Wild Boar for over two years. I have also had the opportunity to work at Waterhead and Low Wood Bay to experience the different atmosphere, working environment and culinary style for which each unique venue is known. One of our greatest strengths within our kitchen and restaurant teams is the willingness to work together to embrace changes, try new methods and constantly look for improvements. Under our head chef Marc Sanders, The Wild Boar has transformed itself in recent years to appeal to a far wider range of diners. We have responded to research and analysis into what our customers wanted – and this in turn allows a commis chef to learn new skills and quickly become a vital cog within the kitchen team. For me, the most rewarding part of being a commis chef is how much I can learn from our Head Chef, Marc Sanders and working in his team to maintain the reputation we have built for creativity and quality from all our diners. I also really love seeing people enjoying my starters and desserts.
Senior Chef de Partie We are looking for a Senior Chef de Partie to join our fantastic team, working in our state of the art open kitchen. This position is suitable for an experienced CDP who is looking to further their career. We will offer you an excellent salary and an environment that will enable you to develop your knowledge and skills. Please telephone Stephen Dodd or Jonny Watson on

The role of commis chef within the group is an exciting opportunity for truly committed and enthusiastic individuals with the right experience within a similar high quality hotel operation. We have a diverse range of venues with their own different menus, so you are always kept on your toes. At The Wild Boar, the addition of the smokehouse and grill five years ago, and more recently the microbrewery, was a major boost for us and added strings to our bow. It’s given customers a more relaxed atmosphere and environment in which to enjoy quality food and drink. The same mindset for continuous improvement applies across the group’s properties, all of which have vibrant kitchen and dining environments which combine the best of traditional elegance with stunning scenery. Perhaps another ingredient of the company’s success is its investment in staff development. If a member of staff is making rapid progress, they get the chance to develop their career. In my time here, I have been given lots of opportunities to acquire new skills – that whets your appetite for excellence in food production and helps create the right environment for success. It translates into longevity of service, loyalty and a desire to be part of a family run business. Above all, we look to have fun and enjoy our careers here – I certainly have! There is great camaraderie and a genuine family atmosphere within the group. We get a good work life balance and it’s a wonderful area in which to work. Whoever fills the new roles will I am sure be outstanding characters who can bring their own unique approaches and flair to our hotels, as well as contributing to the development of a close knit, family orientated team. Here at Cumbria Tourism we are delighted to report that our first internship programme has proved a big success! In March 2014 we launched three internships that provided the opportunity to develop skills and receive training in web marketing, business administration and photography. We are delighted with the valuable contribution our three interns Chloe, Becky and Charlie have made to Cumbria Tourism, and to helping support our members. During their training our interns have been able to experience a range of projects from supporting the web and membership teams to assisting the GoLakes Travel Programme, the MyCumbria Scheme and the FairBooking Campaign. At the end of their internship year we were thrilled to be able to offer them all a permanent position in the CT team!
The Largest Ever Cumbrian Social Care Careers Event! The largest ever Cumbrian social care careers event takes place in Kendal on Tuesday 14 July in Kendal Town Hall. The major 6 day Cumbrian Social Care Careers roadshow starts in Carlisle on the 13th July before arriving in Kendal on the 14th, Barrow on the 15th, followed by Workington, then Whitehaven and ending in Penrith on Saturday 18th July. The social care careers and volunteering events are being held to meet and advise as many Cumbrian people as possible about working or volunteering within the social care sector. Organiser Sandy Armstrong from Care Sector Alliance Cumbria told us “we are holding these events to meet people - men and women, of all ages, all backgrounds, all ability levels from complete novices to the experienced , to enter into social care - the fastest growing and arguably most rewarding sector there is. We cannot accept just any candidate or volunteer into the social care sector, so we are getting out and about to energise the people who are currently thinking ‘I wonder if I have got what it takes to work in social care’ and asking them to take that next step... Why are we doing the 6 consecutive day event… “I am county recruitment and retention officer for care Sector Alliance Cumbria and believe passionately in ‘values based’ recruitment. Meeting people, not necessarily with any experience but the right personal values and attitudes to make great team members in social care. Values and attitudes like kindness, caring, calmness, resilience, understanding, honesty, reliability and being a good listener … People must like the idea of working with people from all backgrounds with very different personalities and needs and wants. At the events we will be making people aware of the real life - true picture of social care careers and voluntary opportunities, and how to manage any
issues and be capable of remaining working/volunteering within the social care sector for years to come. We’ll be informing people interested in working in the sector about the very many different, diverse jobs and volunteering roles they could enter into. Massive demand for special people… 40% of our working population will need to enter health and social care by 2025 (international longevity center) in order to meet the need that improved health care and life style choices has given us. It’s estimated that 1 in 3 babies born after 2013 will live to be 100 years old. Amazing figures! Of course people living longer lives is a great thing and people with long term health issues and disabilities that would have once had a lower life expectancy are now living longer due to advances in healthcare. We must get out there and meet the right people to support this growing population. 30 organisations are attending the Kendal event to introduce people to voluntary and career opportunities including fostering and adoption, hospice at home, home care, residential care, learning difficulty support, drug and solvent misuse support, mental health support, social care training and apprenticeship opportunities for those looking for learning based opportunities or even just a taster course to increase awareness before taking the step into employment. For people wondering if they have what it takes to volunteer, work or train in social care, or people looking for a new direction this is the event for you. Vacancies and volunteering opportunities, social care career information and advice will all be available on 114th July 10-6pm at Kendal Town Hall or Barrow Forum on the 15th.
