The Ambleside based Brathay Trust, who provide youth services and professional development programmes, has been trying to recruit two chefs and an apprentice since the start of the year. Brathay business manager, Judith Wren, recognises this is part of a national problem and said: “Earlier in the year VisitEngland reported that nearly half, (47 per cent) of vacancies for chefs proved difficult to fill due to a lack of skilled applicants. They also said that chefs made up a fifth (21 per cent) of all skill shortage vacancies for skilled trades, suggesting that businesses are struggling to recruit the skilled chefs they need. This has certainly been our experience.

Budding business stars have battled it out in Cumbria’s Giving Nation Challenge The last Thursday and Friday inJune saw Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service’s headquarters in Penrith playing host to the Cumbria final of the 2015 Giving Nation Challenge. Thursday saw two special schools – Sandside Lodge and Sandgate - go head-to-head in pitching their social enterprise business ideas to two judges, while on Friday it was the turn of Keswick School to make their case. The scheme in Cumbria, where the teams’ challenge was to identify a need within their local community and set up a social enterprise to meet that need, is run in partnership between the Citizenship Foundation, Cumbria County Council’s Children’s Services and Cumbria Social Enterprise Partnership. In the special school category both teams delivered impressive pitches, with judges eventually deciding, after long debate, to split the honours with an Innovation award for Sandgate and a Business award for Sandside. Sandgate identified the need in their community that there were a number of parks that were not as accessible for disabled as they could be so they carried out market research across the county by visiting different parks and rating each one to produce a guide for sale. Keswick School came up trumps on Friday for an excellent presentation on their bird feeder business. Produced from plastic waste, the team donated half of their profits to Age Concern. They delivered a faultless pitch and, under a severe grilling for the judges, gave very passionate and reasoned answers. A student from the school said, “I’ve learnt so much from doing this. It’s given me much more confidence and taught me a lot of skills which will help with school and when I get a job, or decide to start my own business.” Cumbria County Council’s Enterprise Education Officer Julia Winder, who judged the competition alongside Rob Randell from Cumbria Social Enterprise Partnership, said: “The standard of entries on both days was so high that it was very difficult for us to choose the winning teams. “Giving Nation in Cumbria is a great way of teaching young people essential skills for the future whether it be setting up their own businesses or preparing for life in the workplace.” Richard John, the Citizenship Foundation’s Giving Nation Programme Manager, said: “Cumbria has once again lead the way in nurturing a hotbed of young social entrepreneurs committed to driving change in their communities. These inspirational young people, supported by their teachers and local agencies have shown that you are never too young to make a difference to others. “This collaboration between the Citizenship Foundation, Cumbria County Council, Cumbria Social Enterprise Partnership and secondary schools is proof of the double-benefit model of youth social action – whereby both our youngest citizens and their local communities gain. It is also further evidence of the need to support schools-based work in line with the Step Up To Serve campaign’s ambition.” Rob Randall from Cumbria Social Enterprise Partnership said: “The Giving Nation Challenge is a fantastic opportunity for young people to showcase their enterprise skills. Year on year I’ve seen the standard of entries improve and this year is no different. Young people are really demonstrating they understand what social enterprise is all about – a business like any other, but one that ploughs its profits back into the community. “For the Cumbria Spirit Award we heard from two excellent projects from Sandside and Sandgate schools, completely different but both with lots to recommend them. Choosing one winner was impossible and in the end we’ve recognised them both, one for their innovation and one for really delivering on the business side. I think that’s the right outcome and I wish both teams every success in taking their projects to the next stage.”
