Writing the perfect job advert

One problem a lot of recruiting employers suffer from these days is having to wade through too many irrelevant CVs and job applications from candidates clearly not suitable for the role. It’s unlikely you’ll ever be able to eliminate these applications completely, but by writing a smarter job advert you can ensure you encourage those candidates with the precise skills you’re looking for to apply for the job. Here’s our straightforward guide to writing the perfect job advert. Legal - Above all else your job advert needs to be legal. You must ensure you use non discriminatory language so phrases like “handy man” and “barmaid” are best avoided as they imply applications are only welcome from one gender. You also need to be careful when asking about specific qualifications or experience unless they are directly relevant to the role. ACAS has some excellent guidelines so it’s well worth checking their website: ACAS.org.uk AIDA – This is a popular marketing mantra and stands for Attention, Interest, Desire, Action. Attention – a snappy and appealing job title. Interest – What is the job about? Desire – why would someone want to do it? Action – how do they apply?

Attention

Job Title – This needs to be as clear and unambiguous as possible “catering staff”, “care worker” etc. Trying to make an unattractive post seem better than it actually is will result in you receiving inappropriate applications as well as frustrated applicants who realise they’ve wasted their time when they find out what the actual job is. What sounds unappealing to you may sound perfect for a prospective candidate.

We keep it Simple and get Results

Company Logo – It’s a great idea to include a company logo as it really helps your advert stand out. Most job hunters will scan a page of job adverts and their eyes are naturally drawn to logos to see who’s recruiting rather than scan looking for specific job titles. Who are you? – If you’re not a well known employer and it’s not obvious from your name, tell people what you do and where you are, just one or two lines should do it.

Interest

J ob Description – What will they be doing? Keep it short and sweet and try to convey a feel for what it’s like to work there – addressing them directly really helps to draw them in. “You will be working in accounts payable in a busy office”; “Your role will be to serve customers in our popular lakeside restaurant” etc.

Person Specification – Who are you looking for? What background, skills and experience do you want? In a job advert it’s best to stick to the essential stuff as you don’t have a lot of space so tell them what they really need to have. And make sure your “essential criteria” really are essential – would you definitely reject any candidate who didn’t have it? If not then it’s “highly desirable”. Keep it simple – Keep the language as simple and easy to read as possible, only use technical terms if absolutely necessary (i.e. for technical roles) and avoid in-house jargon and acronyms - applicants need to know what they’re applying for. Fancy fonts – while we’re on the subject of keeping it simple, best stick to clear and easy to read font types and sizes too. Tahoma, Calibri, Arial etc. all work well. Where do they fit in? – If it’s a more senior role then some idea of where the role fits into the hierarchy is always helpful so mention who the role reports into and if there are any line management responsibilities. Hours of work – “Full time” for many businesses in Cumbria involved weekend and bank holiday work so if this is that case mention it in the advert. Is shift work required? If the role is part time, how many hours and on which days? If it’s flexible then make that clear.

Desire

ates of pay – Always best to include these if you want to attract the right applicant. Phrases such as R “attractive rates of pay” generally put prospective candidates off. Imagine a shop where there are 2 brands of baked beans on the shelf, one clearly labelled with the price and the other labelled only as being “attractively priced”. The majority of people would take the clearly marked one and though a few might enquire about the other brand, most would ignore it. It’s the same with job adverts so be open and up front about pay rates.

Did you know... • We have been successfully providing a cost effective means of recruiting staff for over 10 years in the South Lakeland and North Lancashire area • The way we focus towards a readership in the employment market has helped us build a reputation for attracting a wide range of applicants for our advertisers • Our rates could save you up to two thirds of your recruitment budget • We distribute 15,000 free copies every fortnight throughout South Cumbria & North Lancs Get in touch to place your advert: 015394 44965 mail@employment-pages.co.uk

Benefits – What else do they get? Healthcare, company care, 30 days holiday, flexihours? Many people will trade a great salary for other benefits so tell them what they would be getting. What makes you different? – Why would someone want to come and work for you? Do you have a nice location, great staff benefits, are you expanding rapidly, are there opportunities to develop, do you look after your staff well?

Action

hat do you want them to do now? - Be clear about how you would like them to apply for the role. W Directing them to your website for more information is usually a great idea.

Application forms or CVs – tell them what information you would like to see and the best way to send it – via the post or by email. Who does it need to be addressed to? – Include a contact name if you can as it sounds more personal and avoids the “Dear Sir, Madam” dilemma. Contact number – Encourage people to find out more about the role - “to find out more or for an informal chat please contact...” This can help identify people who are particularly interested as well as giving people the chance to ask questions if any information is missing. Closing date – when do you need applications by? For most jobs a 2 week application window is about right. By following the simple steps above you should be able to create an eye catching job advert which will help you attract applications from exactly the sorts of candidates you’re looking for, and hopefully the only problem you’ll have then is being spoilt for choice when it comes to selecting the best person for the job.
