Call for new community transport volunteers Cumbrians interested in helping their communities get out and about are being encouraged to mark Volunteers’ Week (1-12 June) by coming forward and teaming up with Cumbria County Council’s Community Transport service. New faces are needed to join our voluntary social car and community minibus schemes, providing transport for people who cannot make journeys by public or private transport. Community Transport has a team of over 300 volunteers who have made thousands of journeys getting people out and about. There are around 50 voluntary social car schemes operating throughout Cumbria, as well as a number of community transport schemes providing journeys for people who need to do the weekly shop, see the doctor, or just for visit friends.
Volunteers Wanted Are you caring and compassionate? Are you a good listener? Do you have a couple of hours a week to spare? We need people who can provide support as Peer Mentors (1-to-1 support) and help out at our Drop-ins in Kendal, Grange, Sedbergh, Kirkby Lonsdale and Milnthorpe. Or maybe you can give some time more occasionally? If so, maybe getting involved in our community fundraising efforts would suit you better? Contact Freddie van Gulik for further details, stating which area you are interested in: 01539 740 591 / 07715 666 414 / fvangulik@slmind.org
We are always on the look-out for more people able to give up some of their spare time to be volunteer drivers or scheme coordinators. All expenses are reimbursed. Councillor Keith Little, Cumbria County Council Cabinet member for transport, said: “Our volunteers do a fantastic job and play a vital role getting people out and about, we couldn’t provide a service without their valued efforts. We’re always looking for more volunteers to support our community transport schemes, so if you have some time to spare we’d love to hear from you.” Anyone interested in finding out more should contact Katy Wood, Voluntary Transport Officer, tel 07788 396194, or visit cumbria.gov.uk/communitytransport As well as learning new skills and providing a lifeline for people without access to transport, signing up as a volunteer is a good way to meet new people and give something back to the community. Here is what some of our volunteers have to say about the benefits of volunteering: “I meet a lot of people I wouldn’t have in my working career, plus I have made friends and only drive when and if I want to. I send my expenses to my co-ordinator every month and and am reimbursed. Wish I had done it sooner!!!” - Lynn Ross, Ulverston Voluntary Social Car Scheme Co-ordinator & Driver. “I enjoy volunteering because it makes me feel part of the community and I make new friends. I drive the minibus between Windermere and Kendal on Wednesdays.” Christine Gibson, Lakes & Lyth Community Minibus Driver. “I enjoy volunteering because I like helping older people keep their independence, as one day I may need that help too.” - Ursula Brendling, Ambleside/Windermere Voluntary Social Car Scheme Coordinator & Driver. “I enjoy volunteering because I meet some lovely people, all of whom are appreciative of my help, and acquaintances have now become friends.” - Julie Rushton, Ulverston Voluntary Social Car Scheme Driver. “I enjoy volunteering because I meet such lovely people who appreciate what I do for them.” - Tim Okins, Maryport Voluntary Social Car Scheme Driver. “I enjoy volunteering because it helps mostly old people who need to get to doctors etc to get there with least possible fuss. As most of them don’t live on bus routes and don’t have family and friends living close, as our time is given voluntarily we don’t mind waiting on them.” – Shirley and Jim Warwick, Brampton Voluntary Social Car Scheme Coordinator/Driver. “I enjoy volunteering because it gives me contacts and interests I would never find elsewhere.” - Chloe Randall, Shap Voluntary Social Car Scheme Driver “I like the job as it gives me something to look forward to, meeting people talking with them and helping.” - William Little, Little Corby Voluntary Social Car Scheme Driver Volunteers’ Week runs from 1-12 June 2016 and is a celebration of the fantastic contribution volunteers make across the UK.
