Leave Dez and his mother alone

Dez Bryant, Angela Bryant and Atty. Royce West at press conference

I applaud the Cowboys for the emotional and spiritual support that they are giving their troubled young widereceiver Dez Bryant. (

There are those who thought that owner Jerry Jones would toss the young man on the garbage heap when he and his mother had a misunderstanding recently in her Dallas area home. Mrs. Bryant has said that she will not testify against her son. The state’s attorney has no other choice than to drop any thought of bringing charges against the remarkable pass catcher. As a watcher of sports and a former professional athlete, I know the intense pressures that are on those who compete in sports. I know the battles that they must fight on and off the field. A fan who cheers wildly for you during a football game might be your worse critic off the field. The fact of the matter is that most people do not understand nor do they care about the circumstances that brought Dez Bryant into this life. He was raised by a mother who had a medical problem and he raised himself on the streets of the cities where they lived. It was not easy for Dez and it was not easy for his mother. The young man has made a monumental achievement by becoming a professional football player. I have watched many over the years and few have the talent or temperament that Dez Bryant possesses. One day he will be one of the great Cowboy football players. The time for him to be another Michael Irvin or Abner Haynes has yet to come. But he has the skills and the talent to do great things. It is unfortunate that so many so called fans are hating on Dez. But he should remember that there are those of us who are praying for him and for his mother. Yes, Dez will succeed because the Cowboys owner, the Cowboys coach and people of decency and forgiveness will stay behind him and continue to support him as he develops into a marvelous ball catcher. VOLUME 52 EDITION 31

In the wake of the passing of monumental religious leaders in Dallas, I have thought considerably of the enduring partnership that my father, William “Billâ€? Blair and the late Reverend Dr. S.M. Wright forged to benefit the clergy and to make the Elite News a potent voice in this Dallas community. The idea was to make the Elite News the foundational paper for the faith community and to have the newspaper present the programs, ideas and personalities of the faith community to members of the public on a regular basis. Prior to that time, the faith community had been the victim of frequent .HHVKD &KDPEHUV :HQG\ 6FKRÂżHOG DQG 6KHUUL Âł'ROO´ 5LFKDUGVRQ ZKR LV WKH vicious attacks by members of the journalistic IN%/#SIT/#"9$#(($J((U!'K(-#+99(VOW(QOW(=/>/G#+9L(0T" 8">>"'S8.%1"%5+>>/@()/X"'(Y34CZ(4<3EDC<F community. The coverage was not fair and it was harmful. Over the last 40 years, the Elite News has become the official print voice of the church and the community. Members of the clergy know that the newspaper that was founded by William Blair is their paper of record. Just as members of the Elite News family know that there is not a pulpit in this city where we are not welcomed. Dr. Wright, whose first name was Sylvester, was a giant of a human being. He schooled the publisher of the Elite News in the mannerisms of the faith community. He took him with him to all of the

meetings that he attended and included him in !"#$%&'()#"%'*+''+$(,%( prayer meetings, city-wide revivals and private -.'+%/''(0+%1/(2342 meetings of the clergy. A man of exceptional pedigree, Dr. Wright included his personal friends--the president of the United Sates, Lyndon Baines Johnson; and Civil Rights leaders Benjamin Hooks and Reverend Jesse Jackson. Dr. Martin Luther King was his friend and !"#$%&'%%'($) confidant. 0/#5+5/A leading civil rights leader, himself; Dr. Wright6$#+7/% was one of the greatest leaders that Dallas 86$*/'9+1 has ever known. 09"%:"#: He was a member of the board of trustees of ;<;<(=/:"#(=#/'9(->5:? Some thought that he was too busy to befriend the Elite News. Yet, Dr. Wright understood the importance of communication and he generally liked William “Bill Blair. The two of them become more like brothers than business associates. And just as the influence of the clergy continued to grow, the influence and notoriety of the Elite News rose sharply. It was monumental for the clergy and its official voice. It was an event greater occurrence for the city of Dallas and the north Texas region.

WORDS OF WISDOM

William Blair, Jr.

ELITENEWS

Why spend your time making excuses for not honoring your commitments? Say what you mean and do what you say.

PRAYER CLOSET By Rev. Clarence Henderson

The early church understood the necessity of prayer. We see clearly in Acts 6:2 & 4, the priority that the believers gave prayer and the preaching and teaching of the gospel of Jesus Christ. They said it is not a good thing that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables, but we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word. Two prominent ministers were asked, “Should Christ come, what would be your keenest regret? They both replied, “That I did not spend more time in prayer We all intend to spend more time in prayer, but few do. The rich man in the story of Lazarus prayed but he waited to late. If we practice more prayer, we will become perfected in our prayer life.

Cochran Firm leads way on major book project By Joseph Green-Bishop Elite News Staff Writer

The Dallas law firm that bears the name of one of the country’s most beloved legal minds presented a check for $500.00 to the William Blair Book Writing Project recently. The donation was made by two of the firm’s partners, Larry Taylor and Bryan Pope, to Mr. Blair, the founding publisher of the Elite Newspaper. The funds will go towards the monies being solicited for the writing and publishing of a memoir that is being written on the life and work of Mr. Blair. Some observers are calling the book, scheduled to be published in July of next year, one of the most significant literary works ever written by a Dallas resident. “Our firm wanted to be among the first to step up to the plate to support Mr. Blair’s book project,” said Larry Taylor, a partner in the Johnnie Cochran Law Firm located in Dallas. “Mr. Blair is one of the most important individuals who have ever lived in Dallas. And it is important that his history be written. It will be valuable to generations of people who are not even alive at the moment.” Mr. Blair has promised the public a factual, entertaining and historic book that chronicles his history as a young man

Cochran Firm partners Larry Taylor, left and Bryan Pope recently presented a $500.00 check that will go towards the writing and publishing of the book that is being written about the life of Elite Newspaper founding publisher William "Bill" Blair. the project and to the community that Mr. Blair and the newspaper he founded have served for the past half century. “Mr. Blair is one of the most remarkable individuals I have ever met,” said Pope. It is indeed a pleasure for our firm to be participating in a project that he conceived and is conducting. It is not often that individuals with his experiences share their stories with the public. This is historic.” Mr. Blair’s unique history is also being recorded. Once the book is written the tapes will be donated to the University of Texas at Arlington as a part of the William Blair archives that have been established by the institution. Former Chicago Cubs baseball player Ernie Banks is writing the forward for the book. It was Mr. Blair who discovered the talents of the baseball great while he was growing up in Dallas. “There are many things that people do not know about Dallas that I intend to share in the book,” he said. “It is one of the most important projects that I have ever undertaken. I am grateful to the Cochran firm for making their donation towards the book.” For more information on the Blair book project, including how you can participate, please call 214-886-3716. Welcome to the weekend, baaaby! Big congrats to Mr. and Mrs. Dirk Nowitzki! Earlier reports that Dirk tied the knot with is Kenyan fiance proved untrue. Now it's happened, according to various net sources! Dirk and longtime girlfriend Jessica Olssen tied the knot in an African ceremony and have a second one planned for the other side of the family...I'm starting the weekend with what I'd like to call, the "grown folks back to School concert" tonight at the Gexa (still Starplex in my mind) Energy Pavillion. Let's face it, grown ups deserve Summer vacation more than kids, lol...Frankie Beverly and Maze, Patti Labelle, Babyface and Tank will all be here. The key word for this evening’s show is hydration. Going easy on the heavy alcohol might be the best bet! The temps are expected to be around 100 degrees. I started getting in shape for this show two weeks ago, by walking in the heat. I refuse to be the uncool brotha that passes out in front of his woman, lol... Speaking of uncool, reports out of New Orleans say actor Cuba Gooding Jr. had a warrant out earlier this week for getting rowdy at a bar in the wee hours...He may have to "show them the money!” Lots of stuff to read these days, but the top of my list has to be Dallas own Dennis Rodman's child book, "Dennis The Bull." Good to see things settling down on the Jackson compound...Katherine and the kids are heading back to Indiana to celebrate what would have been Michael's 54th Birthday later this month. The celebration, titled "Goin Back to Indiana: Can You feel it" starts August 29th in Gary, Indiana. For more scoop, check out www.Facebook.com/ jacksonstreet2012, it should be a true roots

Snoop says he was "reborn" during a trip to Jamaica. Look for his next album to be Reggae, as Snoop has converted to Rastafarianism! Ya Mon, Jamaica will do that to ya! One of my friends came back and he's been known as "Boombastic" every since, lol! Word from Atlanta says Kirk Frost is leaving the idiot show Love and Hip Hop on VH-1! Rasheeda's husband says his marriage is more important than TV... If they would all only just leave, especially the asthmatic rapper and his crazy momma! Speaking of reality TV, the Braxton's show has been renewed and we can look for a spinoff, called Tamar and Vince. AAU Basketball

Sports with Bill Toliver’s Talents

By Mark A. Toliver II Elite News Staffwriter

Wow!!! The summer is just about over, and everybody is enjoying all the things that the summertime brings. People are enjoying out door concerts, Six Flags, Hurricane Harbor, softball games, track meets, and AAU basketball. This summer I had the great opportunity to enjoy an entire season of AAU basketball. I had the opportunity to watch talented teams

like Dallas Showtime, Dallas Urban Elite, the Dallas Mustangs, Team Texas, DJHS, Truth Trojans, and the Next Generation! There are hundreds of AAU teams and these teams have players from all over the metroplex. A basketball fan can watch about 10 elite players compete in every tournament. I now have a realistic view of what these young men experience. Theses young student -athletes participate in about 10 tournaments in a 3 month time span. These young men and women travel all over the metroplex competing, and go on the road during the month of July. I have to tell all of the AAU basketball coaches "Thank You" for your commitment to your teams. These young men play about four games each weekend and these coaches have them at each game ready to play. Players play about 50 games during the summer. These student - athletes play in some big time tournaments against some big time competition, in front of the nation’s biggest scouts. The Sauce is Boss

By Joseph Green-Bishop Elite News Staff Writer

While his father gained a reputation as one of the finest chefs in the United States, Jeffery Tutson dreamed of one day becoming an international banker or professional athlete. Little did the Skyline High School graduate know that he would one day create an all-purpose cooking sauce that could change the eating habits of people the world-over.

One hot summer afternoon while cooking on his grill, Tutson, who grew up in South Oak Cliff, realized that he did not have a sauce for the meats that he was preparing. Instead of rushing to the grocery store he began to think of ingredients that would add a rich flavor to his meats, and satisfy the expectations of his wife and children. “When my wife, L’Sandra and our children, Kian and Jayla, came home and tasted the food they thought I had purchased the sauce at a store,” said Tutson, who works as a banker in Houston. “They did not believe me when I told them that I had made it myself. They loved it. I knew I had something that people would purchase and enjoy using on their foods.” Tutson and two business partners, Rommel Artis and Dedrick Jennings, started marketing the sauce, “Sweet Thang,” last year. They are working with a local manufacturer and are introducing Sweet Thang in the Dallas and Houston markets. “Our ingredients are unique and secret. We are currently marketing it

online and looking for retail outlets that will sell it. We believe that we have a tremendous future because we have the best sauce in the world,” said Tutson, a graduate of the University of North Texas. “We plan to become major players in the food condiment market. Our plan is to penetrate other markets in the next 18 months.” The three partners said their sauce is different from others because it can be used on a variety of foods, including fish, baked or fried chicken, all types of meats and salads. It comes in original and spicy and people can even use it as a dip, said Tutson, who attended college on a football scholarship. One of the partners, Dedrick Jennings said that some of his relatives are so intrigued by the sauce that they now take it with them when they go out to eat. “Sweet Thang is being marketed in the Dallas area through a catering service that we started called Riverfront Barbeque,” said Jennings. “Retailers and individuals who are interested in the product should

go to the web site or call me personally at 214-417-3876.” “Our slogan is ‘show your food some love’ and people are using it on all types of food items. We have the only allpurpose sauce on the market today,” said Jennings. “Currently it is packaged in twelve ounce bottles. We hope to expand to 18 ounce bottles and begin to supply large facilities, schools, public institutions, senior centers and large cafeterias.” Tutson said that food creation was in his genes. “I picked up a lot from members of my family,” said Tutson, who was a member of the Golden Gate Missionary Baptist Church while growing up in Dallas. “Our partnership works well together. We believe in providing the public with the very best product and giving them something of value for their hard earned dollars. “We want people to go to our site, www.sweetthang.com and give us a try. They will not be disappointed that they did.”

Restoring Souls for Jesus Bishop says he knows what pain feels like By Joseph Green-Bishop Elite News Staff Writer

When Bishop Eli Jacobs was incarcerated his mother, Delores, came to visit him in a forbidding prison unit in Palestine , Texas where he was serving a 13-year sentence for the possession of illegal drugs with the intent to distribute. The sickly and distressed mother pleaded with her son to turn his life over to God, to resist the ways of the streets and to walk in a new light of promise, hope and holiness. Seven days after the visit she died from the cancer that had wrecked her body. “I was not able to attend my mother’s wake or funeral,” said Bishop Jacobs, who joined prison prayer groups and witnessing ministries shortly after his mother’s death. “On the very day that she left the prison he knew that he would not see his mother again. His spirit told him that she was seeking a better place. Her address would change, he thought. Heaven would be her new home. Eight years later in 2001 when he was released from prison Bishop Jacobs was a called preacher. Returning to Dallas he joined the ministerial staff at the Nazareth Page 10

Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor George Carter. In 2004, Bishop Jacobs began a ministry in South Dallas called the Resurrection Body of Christ. Two of his sisters, Rebecca and Elect, were among the three members who attended the first services where he preached until he was exhausted. Today, the church is located at 901 Parker Road in DeSoto. The church has grown and Bishop Jacob’s wife, Dr. Pedra Jacobs, assists him as he ministers to the 300 members. “Both my wife and I were incarcerated and came from the very bottom of life,” he said. “Sometimes God has to find you at the bottom in order to take you to the top, in order to restore you. “My wife and I have a heart for people who are hurting. We know what pain feels like and we enjoy ministering.” Bishop Jacobs said that the focus of the ministry that he shares with his wife is to reach former drug addicts, men and women who were once incarcerated, people who have experienced broken marriages and juveniles who are having societal difficulties. “We are concerned with what the scripture describes as the least of these,”

he said. “We are sinning souls like crazy. We reach people who others have given up on. This is central to our ministry.” Bishop Jacob said that the church is sponsoring a women’s conference August 9 11, that will feature Dr. Juanita Bynum as its guest speaker on Thursday and Friday nights at 7.30 pm. The event is being called the Underground Anointed Women of God. “Dallas will never see anything like this conference,” he said. “The tickets are free. All people have to do is call 214-434-0252 for information.”

Yard waste washed down our storm drainage system is a form of pollution and accounts for a fifth of all garbage generated in the U.S. each year. Yard waste decomposes in

local creeks, lakes, and the Trinity River causing algae to grow.

Too much algae lowers the amount of oxygen in the water which may suffocate aquatic and plant life.

or nor

Did you know... Sweeping or blowing yard waste into the street and storm drainage system could cost you up to $2000? Tips: +Sweep or blow grass clippings from your sidewalk, driveway, and street back onto your yard. Yard clippings act as a natural fertilizer. +Fallen leaves should be raked or blown from your yard, sidewalk, driveway, and street, collected then bagged and placed for collection during your bulk waste collection week. +Compost your grass clippings and leaves; They can serve as a natural fertilizer.
