N E W S B RI E F S LATEST NYPD GUN BUYBACK PROGRAM COLLECTS 354 WEAPONS New York City Police Department officials say their latest gun buyback program in the Bronx resulted in the surrendering of 354 guns. Drop-off locations were set up at three Bronx churches. Some of the weapons that folks turned in included an Uzi submachine gun, a Tec-9 semi automatic, four AK-47 assault rifles and six sawed-off shotguns. People who turned in a working handgun got a $200 bank card, no questions asked. A rifle or BB gun was worth a $20 bank card. NYPD officials say the program has now taken nearly 7,000 weapons off the streets since it began in 2008. CORRECTION OFFICER SHOOTS ATTACKER IN BROOKLYN MCDONALD’S An off-duty Department of Correction officer opened fire inside a Brooklyn McDonald’s Saturday after being attacked by another man. Sources say Officer Michael Turnbull intervened after a 36year-old man started harassing a 67-year-old man inside the Church Avenue restaurant in East Flatbush Saturday afternoon. They say when the younger man went after Turnbull with a metal pipe, the officer fired his gun, hitting his attacker in the leg. The man was taken to the hospital for treatment. No charges have been filed against Turnbull. DOT PAVES WAY FOR BIGGER POTHOLE-FILLING PROGRAM After a snow-filled winter, New Yorkers can soon expect some relief from the many potholes left behind by the storms. The city Department of Transportation has dedicated $2 million to repaving city streets. The city also says it is on track to repave 1,000 lane miles in the upcoming fiscal year. “There’s no question that we’ve had a very difficult couple of winters and Mother Nature has been throwing everything that she’s got at us. And with the significant freeze-thaws that we’ve had here, it’s wreaked havoc on the streets of New York,” said Transportation Commissioner Janette SadikKhan. To monitor pothole progress in one’s neighborhood, visit the city’s “The Daily Pothole” blog at thedailypothole.tumblr.com.

First lady: Military kids ‘the greatest’ QUANTICO, Va. — First lady Michelle Obama Friday told graduates of a small Virginia military high school they are “the greatest” and are role models for all Americans. Delivering the commencement speech at Quantico Middle/High School, the first lady congratulated graduates on the “strength, resilience and maturity” they developed as military children, “learning to say grace night after night with an empty seat at the table, keeping your spirits up through all the missed holidays … stepping up to help with chores, even when you were juggling activities and homework of your own.” Obama told the 27 members of the Quantico High School class of 2011 they were ahead of the game because they don’t “sweat the small stuff.” “Because from a very young age, you all have been dealing with the big stuff. And that’s given you perspective. You may not realize it now, but your experience has given you a resilience and a sturdiness of spirit that will prepare you for the setbacks and hardships that you will inevitably face in life. And that’s something that no one can ever take away from you,” the first lady said in prepared remarks.

First lady Michelle Obama gets a high five from graduate Kristian Lucas Kappen during the commencement for the Quantico Middle/High School on the Quantico Marine Base in Quantico, Va. “Most important of all, you’ve learned how to make friends with people from all different backgrounds. You’ve learned to look beyond the surface — what someone looks like, what their accent sounds like, what they’re wearing. Instead, you’ve gotten to know people for who they really are. … “You already have a skill set that so many employers are seeking, one that will position you for success both in the career you choose and

the life you build for yourself with your family,” Obama said. “For military kids, service is the air that you breathe. … You really are the greatest. … That’s why we all brag about America’s military kids every chance we get. “You all are role models, not just for other military kids, but for all kids, for all adults, for all Americans who want to see what patriotism and sacrifice and service to country really look like.”

Riotous Republican race speeds up By STEPHEN COLLINSON WASHINGTON — An impossibleto-predict race is unfolding for the Republican nod to take on President Barack Obama in 2012, confounding the buttoned-down party’s trend of favoring anointed heirs. After months of slumber, which saw several top hopefuls search their souls before nixing a run, the Republican field has burst into life, 17 months before Democrat Obama will ask voters for a second term. One top contender, Mitt Romney, launched his second White House bid this week by accusing Obama of Europe-style socialism, while Sarah Palin teased reporters on a cat-andmouse chase around American landmarks. Romney’s top establishment rival Tim Pawlenty courted evangelical Christians and trekked through Iowa in the kind of campaign the exacting voters in February’s first-in-the nation contest demand. Two big questions dominated commentary running into the Republican race. First, could Republicans, pulled right by the ultra-conservative Tea Party, pick a candidate compatible with the center ground where US presidential elections are normally won? And is the nomination worth having at all, as Obama, who even critics admit is a master campaigner, builds a war chest that may reach a billion dollars and exploits all the advantages of incumbency? In May, Obama’s ratings spiked in the wake of the daring special forces raid into Pakistan to kill Osama bin

Laden, and his prospects looked strong. But, one week of dismal economic data later, the Republican nomination suddenly looks more tantalizing and candidates are lacerating Obama over the slow recovery and jobs growth. Polls mean little at this early stage, but top candidates must convince big money donors they have a viable path to the nomination. But with the Republican grassroots fragmented, and with no obvious nominee, strategizing is tougher than ever — and as always, how a candidate performs against expectations in a particular state can say more than vote tallies. The frontrunner in the jumbled Republican field, Romney wheeled out his campaign on Thursday, wrapping himself in the US flag in an “American as apple pie” setting in New Hampshire. With his square jaw and perfect haircut, he looks like a president — but some see the millionaire former Massachusetts governor as juicy target, due to an unfortunate history of political flip-flops. Romney is also vulnerable over his Massachusetts health care plan, similar to Obama’s national scheme, which conservatives despise. He might be the frontrunner, but Romney is a weak one, garnering just 17 percent to top a RealClearPolitics average of Republican presidential polls. Romney’s top Republican establishment foe may be Pawlenty. The former Minnesota governor probably needs nothing less than a win in Iowa and a showing in the New Hampshire primary that squeezes Romney to run a viable campaign.

Romney has an Iowa dilemma and has not yet committed to contest the state. In 2008, Romney bet large in the state, but was beaten by conservative favorite Mike Huckabee, dealing a severe blow to his campaign. Another loss to a right-wing champion could once again raise questions about his viability. The Tea Party, set up by conservatives opposed to Obama’s “big government” ways, has yet to unite around a candidate. Palin, the former Alaska governor, can still steal a headline, skewer rivals where they are weakest and tap into the conservative soul. She would likely ignite the Tea Party crowd, but doubts remain over her commitment to run and negative approval ratings that could doom a general election bid. One-time Palin protege, congresswoman Michele Bachmann, a Tea Party favorite, may be an alternative standard bearer for the fiscal and religious right. Another possible candidate, former governor Jon Huntsman of Utah, seems a fit for the center ground of a general election. But Huntsman may be too moderate for the conservative grassroots and has a major vulnerability — he served Obama as ambassador to China. Long-shot candidates include Newt Gingrich a former Republican House speaker whose campaign has had a poor start. Former senator and evangelical favorite Rick Santorum and libertarian champion Ron Paul may also run. Even former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani is taking a look — despite his dismal 2008 campaign.

Report: No evidence of an organized slowdown in 2010 blizzard cleanup By LAURA BATCHELOR A five-month probe by New York City’s anti-corruption agency found no evidence of an organized work slowdown by the city’s sanitation workers during the December 2010 blizzard, according to a report released Friday. The report by the New York City Department of Investigation was a compilation of 150 witness interviews that included employees of the city’s Sanitation and Transportation Departments, local officials and members of the public, as well as a review of video footage obtained by the public and law-enforcement sources. The Sanitation Department drew sharp criticism last year after rumors swirled that supervisors had ordered rank-and-file workers to slow cleanup efforts in retaliation for the city’s belt-tightening measures. The probe did uncover several incidents in which sanitation workers weren’t doing their job, including ones who were caught on surveillance video. Video shows three sanitation workers purchasing beer while on duty. Another incident in the report,

which was investigated because off a YouTube video called “Mike Bloomberg Fail - NYC Blizzard Workers at Dunkin Donuts for Eleven Hour Break,” shows three sanitation trucks idling outside of a Brooklyn Dunkin’ Donuts. Two trucks were working in tandem and became stuck. The third truck was forced to

stop and could not regain momentum to continue plowing. The trucks were left idling in front of the doughnut shop and eventually ran out of gas. “As the mayor said this winter, the response to this storm did not meet our standards, or the standards that New Yorkers have come to expect from us,” Keith Mellis, spokesman

3 for the Sanitation Department, said in a statement. “The Department of Sanitation is actively working to implement the recommendations ... and will improve many of their procedures to ensure that snow removal operations function well in the future, as they have in many other storms.” After the cleanup, New York City Councilman Dan Halloran said three sanitation workers and two Department of Transportation supervisors went to his office, saying their supervisors had ordered the slowdown, telling workers, “the mayor will see how much he needs us” and “there will be plenty of overtime.” The claims created an uproar, but the report did not find any evidence of such claims. The report found that roads around the hospitals were cleared in a timely manner to varying degrees, but hospitals with more sizeable campuses experienced greater problems. While several hospitals reported satisfactory snow removal in the streets around their perimeter, several reported that vital roads and access points were not expeditiously cleared. The report recommended that the city improve planning for snow cleanup at key access points to hospitals. The findings in the 47-page report have been referred to three prosecuting agencies, the district attorneys for Kings County and Queens County, as well as the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York, to determine whether further action is needed.

North Carolina city honors Supporters give ‘hug’ to Black Civil War soldiers budget-pinched NYC libraries By JIM BRUMM WILMINGTON, North Carolina — Hundreds of African American Union soldiers buried in the National Cemetery in Wilmington, North Carolina, after the Civil War were honored Thursday with a state highway historical marker. Many of the “United States Colored Troops,” as they were known in the 1860s, died in the final months of the war when federal troops closed the Confederacy’s last port with the capture of Fort Fisher about 15 miles south of the city. Thousands of Union soldiers who died in the assault on Fort Fisher and the Wilmington campaign were reburied in unmarked graves in the cemetery when it opened in 1867. The dedication Thursday also honored Fred Johnson, a local Civil War re-enactor who has researched the story of the Black soldiers buried in Wilmington and pushed for them to be recognized. A Philadelphia native and an Army Sergeant during the Korean War who retired to Wilmington in the 1990s, Johnson became interested in the Civil War through studying his family history. Johnson said his great-great grandfather, Peter Quomony, served in the U.S. Colored Troops from 1863 to 1865. Another ancestor who died in the war is buried in an unmarked grave at the New Bern National Ceme-

tery. Civil War historian Chris Fonvielle said the historical marker deserved to be erected, pointing out some 3,300 African American soldiers in two brigades served in the Cape Fear region. He said many of the Colored Troops were North Carolinians and ex-slaves, and one of their regiments, the 37th, included men from the Wilmington area. The troops served as occupation forces in the area after the war, and many stayed on after their discharges. “Postwar Wilmington was a mecca for African Americans,” said Fonvielle, an assistant professor at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Many of these resident veterans were buried at the National Cemetery well into the 1900s. Records identified 92 U.S. Colored Troops buried at Wilmington National Cemetery. But further research by Bill Jayne, former cemetery development director with the National Cemetery Administration, indicated that many more bodies were moved to the cemetery between 1867 and 1882 — perhaps as many as 500 in all. That is the number noted on the marker. It reads: “United States Colored Troops. Black soldiers and white officers in the Union Army 18631865. About 500 involved in the Wilmington campaign buried here.”

By NINA RAJA A group of supporters encircled the New York Public Library’s 42nd Street branch in Manhattan arm-inarm Saturday to show their love. Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s proposed budget cuts $40 million from the branches in Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island. Queens and Brooklyn library branches have their own separate budget and are facing their own reductions. Hug the Library was part of the savenyclibraries.org campaign organized by the advocacy group Urban Librarians Unite in response to nationwide cuts to public libraries. “We chose the Schwarzman building for its iconic status, but we feel that the most important library in America is the one that is in every community,” said ULU representative Christian Zabriskie in a statement. The continuous human chain also symbolized a human shield to protect the library from the most significant decrease of weekly access, books on the shelf and staff in its 100-year history. “We have three weeks to save the library. This is a clarion call to librarians all over the country to embolden people to speak up to their council members and mayors to save our libraries,” said City Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer of Queens. Libraries across the country have been facing budget cuts. In a Library

Journal 2010 budget survey, 72% of responding libraries reported budget cuts and 43% reported staff cuts. “When the economy declines, people come to the library for help with finding jobs. We’ve helped tens of thousands reposition themselves to find jobs ever since the economy tanked,” said NYPL President Paul LeClerc. “One of the most important things that libraries do across America is to let people be online for free.” According to a Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation study, two-thirds (67%) of U.S. public libraries are the only provider of free public access to computers and the Internet in their community. A library advocacy flier quoted Pedro Munoz, a junior high school dropout and recovering addict, as saying the library “has saved my life. Without it I would still be out there on the street.” According to the flier, he is learning to read and write in free adult literacy classes at the Tompkins Square Library in Manhattan. “The public values the free books, music, DVDs and e-books that libraries provide. The institution of the library exists as a cultural storehouse, a common space and a center of learning, self-improvement and entertainment in the community,” ULU Communications Director Lauren Comito said in a statement. New York’s City Council and Mayor Michael Bloomberg will negotiate a budget in a few weeks.

President Barack Obama wants to create a new generation of African American entrepreneurs. The Obama administration says entrepreneurship plays a central role in creating jobs and economic opportunity. Administration officials say they plan to generate more public-private partnerships to support a new cadre of urban business owners. In an effort to revitalize America’s urban centers, the White House and Rutgers University is sponsoring a daylong summit on June 6 to discuss ways to strengthen urban entrepreneurship. The agencies and individuals that will participate in the discussion include, the White House Business Council, The White House Office of Public Engagement and Domestic Policy Council, the Rutgers Business School’s Center for Urban Entrepreneurship & Economic Development (CUEED), Startup America Partnership, Mayor Cory Booker of Newark, Russell Simmons, the Fund for Public Advocacy – Office of the New York City Public Advocate, Operation HOPE, the Small Business Administration (SBA), the Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA), and the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Recent surveys at Rutgers Business School have shown us that up to 80 percent of its stu-

dents in all disciplines are interested in becoming entrepreneurs. According to Rutgers officials, 10 years ago, business students wanted to become the next Jack Welch; today their heroes are Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg and Google’s Sergey Brin and Larry Page. But a growing number of them want their new businesses to be socially minded enterprises that address pressing needs and turn a profit. According to the Rutgers website, the Center for Urban Entrepreneurship & Economic Development (CUEED) at Rutgers Business School is the first center of its kind in the nation to integrate scholarly works with private capital, government, and non-profit sectors to develop citywide resources and bring renewed economic growth and vitality through urban entrepreneurship. It “promotes a new generation of urban entrepreneurs who actively seek socially conscious urban renaissance.” The program, the website says, was designed to bring together real life issues and innovative solutions while building strong community and corporate partnerships that support the revitalization of Newark and other urban areas in New Jersey. The June 6 summit is part of the Obama administration’s broader plan to revitalize urban centers. In 2008, Obama created The White House Office on Urban Affairs to spend billions of dollars to revitalize inner cities in areas that include edu-

cation, housing, health care, poverty, transportation, infrastructure and safety. The Obama administration has identified several “cities in crisis” that include Detroit, Chicago, New Orleans and Philadelphia. Obama is proposing to allocate billions of dollars for social services that include nutrition programs for pregnant women, new mothers and infants, and expand child care opportunities and initiatives for Head Start. The summit at Rutgers University comes as the nation’s Black unemployment rate is surging toward 16 percent, twice the rate of whites. In fact, the overall jobless rate is dropping while the Black unemployment rate continues to rise. Obama has been hosting a series of workshops and forums to address the problem, but he has not been successful in reversing the trend. For the past few months, Obama has been criticized harshly by scholar Cornel West, the Princeton University professor, who says Obama has not done enough for African Americans and poor citizens of color. “When I look at the country, especially Black America, I see mass unemployment and underemployment,” West told a reporter recently. “I see mass incarceration. I see mass lack of quality of education. I see police surveillance and police harassment and too - too many young brothers of all colors, but especially young, Black

Race to the Top-Early Learning Challenge By MARIAN WRIGHT EDELMAN On May 25th, the Obama Administration announced a new Race to the Top challenge fund to identify and reward best practices in education—$500 million of the $700 million challenge is designed to improve the odds for the very youngest children. The Early Learning Challenge grant competition invites states to create comprehensive plans to develop and transform early learning systems for children from birth through pre-kindergarten to enable all children to start school ready to learn. States must address how to better coordinate programs and services for young children, establish clearer learning standards, and strengthen the quality of those serving young children. Successful states will receive grants by December 31st to put plans into action to increase their ability to provide high quality early learning opportunities for their state’s children. As Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said at the announcement of the new initiative, “To win the future, our children need a strong start. The Race to the TopEarly Learning Challenge encourages states to develop bold and comprehensive plans for raising the quality of early learning programs across America.” The Race to the Top-Early Learning Challenge is being jointly administered by the Department of Education (DOE) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), a partnership that acknowledges the importance of a seamless, holistic approach to early childhood and recognizes what the Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) has long believed: children do not come in pieces. Preparing children to succeed in school begins long before they enter a kindergarten or first grade classroom. Healthy child development from birth – in fact before birth with prenatal care – is critical to making sure children are ready to learn.

Special attention must be given to the neediest children. HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said, “This challenge represents the Obama Administration’s commitment to helping vulnerable children and families reach their full potential. Our collective health and financial security as a nation will depend on high quality investments during the critical early years of a child’s life.” The Administration’s focus on helping the most vulnerable children is aligned with CDF’s long sought and continuing early childhood policy and advocacy goals. In June, CDF is partnering with the Educational Testing Service (ETS) to bring together thought leaders to share what we know and best practices that can make a difference in the lives of the most vulnerable child population in America – Black boys. We need to jumpstart and expand solutions to prepare many more young Black boys for educational success. Right now, 15.5 million children in America live in poverty. Nearly one in four children under five is poor and over 40 percent are Black. At nine months of age, poor Black children are already behind their higher-income peers in cognitive development. The gap is wider at 24 months. By kindergarten, poor Black children have to beat higher odds to catch up and as various tests reveal, many never do. We want to change those odds. ETS’s and CDF’s Addressing Achievement Gaps Symposium “A Strong Start: Positioning Young Black Boys for Educational Success” will highlight some of the proven best practices in early education that the Race to the Top-Early Learning Challenge seeks to reward. We must close the gap between what we know and what we do to make a positive difference in child lives. In this very dangerous budget climate when unwise and unjust proposals to slash cost effective supports for poor young and vulnerable children loom, this giant step forward by the Administration is a bright spot for children. The Race to the Top-

Early Learning Challenge recognizes that investing in young children is a fiscally sound investment that builds their and America’s future. The Administration correctly points out that: “Research shows that highquality early learning programs lead to long-lasting positive outcomes for children, including increased rates of high school graduation, college attendance, and college completion. Yet just 40 percent of four-year olds in America are currently enrolled in preschool programs. The most recent report from the National Institute for Early Education Research (NIEER) indicates that, for the first time in a decade, states are reducing some of their key investments in early learning.” The Race to the TopEarly Learning Challenge funds seek to avert this backward trend. Business, law enforcement, military, and foundation leaders all spoke at the announcement ceremony about how this early childhood investment will help reduce crime, strengthen national security, and boost our national competitiveness. It is time for all of our leaders and citizens to wake up and recognize that the greatest threat to America’s national security comes from no enemy without but from our failure to invest in the health and education of our children. Our biggest deficit is not in our budget but in our values and human capital. Many of the programs Race to the Top is designed to elevate and celebrate are under threat. The same day the Early Learning Challenge was announced, the U.S. Senate rejected three harmful budget proposals, including the House-passed Fiscal Year 2012 Bud-

get resolution that seeks to cut lifelines and dismantle crucial protections for children and low income families from cradle to college. Over 10 years, the House-passed Republican (Ryan) Budget would slash $4.3 trillion in critical services and supports, nearly two-thirds of which directly serve children and lowincome families, while giving huge tax cuts to the wealthiest Americans. Even with the Ryan Budget off the table, the threat of devastating unjust cuts and fundamental changes in programs serving children and other vulnerable populations loom. One dangerous proposal, known as the Corker-McCaskill spending cap, would force Congress to make deep cuts across the boards to life-saving safety net programs for vulnerable children and would harm children of color most. These dark budget clouds swirling around Congress pose grave threats to children and everyone concerned about children and the poor needs to wake up and say no. It is simply wrong to cut children’s Head Start and nutrition programs and not ask billionaires and millionaires and amnesty corporations to contribute a modicum of their government welfare.

She said there are recent positive signs that some business leaders are coming around to Obama’s way of thinking, but she agreed that it’s a work in progress.

DOT: Bus firm in Virginia crash tried to resume operations The company that operated a commercial tour bus involved in a deadly crash this week has been issued a cease-and-desist order after the U.S. Department of Transportation said it tried to resume operations under a different name. Four people were killed and 53 others injured Tuesday when the Sky Express bus ran off Interstate 95 near Fredericksburg, Virginia, and overturned. Investigators have blamed the wreck on driver fatigue. The 37-year-old driver of the bus, Kin Yiu Cheung of Flushing, New York, has been charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter and reckless driving. The Charlotte, North Carolina-based Sky Express Inc. had been placed out of service Tuesday by the transportation department’s Fed-

eral Motor Carrier Safety Administration for multiple federal safety violations, which prohibited it from operating interstate transportation services. The department issued the cease-and-desist order Friday after it said it found the company trying to operate and sell tickets under two new names: 108 Tours and 108 Bus. “We are relentlessly targeting unsafe and illegal bus companies,” Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said in a statement. “This action sends a strong message that the U.S. Department of Transportation will utilize every legal and enforcement tool available to shut down unsafe bus companies and protect passengers and motorists.” The transportation department also subpoenaed Friday the records of three websites

Alabama residents cope with stress after deadly storms By MONIQUE FIELDS TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Emeel Salem Jr. cried as he drove through Tuscaloosa on Saturday for the first time since the April 27 tornado ravaged the Alabama town. “I’m missing turns because the landmarks that used to be there aren’t there,” said Salem, a University of Alabama alumnus who plays minor league baseball for the Tampa Bay Rays organization. The Forest Lake home he rented during the off-season was gone. Where the home once stood, he could see Druid City Hospital, a view he didn’t have before the storm. “I knew it would hit me hard,” he said. “I didn’t realize I’d be overcome with emotions.” Salem said he wasn’t worried about himself, but about fellow residents who lost everything. It’s a common response known as secondary traumatic stress or compassion fatigue, said Karla D. Carmichael, an assistant professor of counselor education at the University of Alabama. Many of the state’s residents are dealing with similar emotions in the storms’ wake, and mental health experts are taking action to help. The Alabama Department of Mental Health and the Federal Emergency Management

Agency have partnered to activate Project Rebound, a federally funded program agencies use to assist residents when a natural disaster occurs. Teams of counselors are on the ground helping residents in hard-hit areas, and the state will be able to hire more counselors for community outreach and educational services with FEMA’s help, said John Ziegler, director of the public information office for the state’s mental health department. The state will open a call center to provide free crisis counseling as soon as counselors are hired and trained, he said. “It’s later, after the emergency crisis, that people begin to feel the weight of their emotions, and their loss and their grief,” Ziegler said. Roughly two-thirds of Alabama was ravaged by tor-

nadoes on April 27. More than 230 residents died, including 43 in Tuscaloosa alone. Though many of Tuscaloosa’s 95,000 residents didn’t lose a home or a relative, they have seen the devastation and felt the loss of neighborhoods, businesses and their sense of security. Residents can no longer purchase craft supplies at Hobby Lobby, shop for discounted items at Big Lots, have a burger at Milo’s or pick up coffee at Krispy Kreme Doughnuts. All those businesses were destroyed in the storm. “Everybody in Tuscaloosa potentially has secondary traumatic stress to some degree or another,” Carmichael said. “There’s going to be an increase in substance abuse, compulsive behavior, over-spending, over-eating, gambling, addic-

tion.” Children are not immune from the destruction. The city’s Chuck E. Cheese’s restaurant was leveled during the storm. In the days following the tornado, Carmichael talked with kindergartners and firstgraders who knew the Chuck E. Cheese character lived there and wanted to know where he had gone and whether he was okay. “Chuck E. was taken care of just like everybody else,” Carmichael told the schoolchildren. “Chuck E. has a new home. He is staying with friends until they build Chuck E. Cheese’s back.” Alabamians who survived the tornadoes may experience depression, guilt, difficulty sleeping, fatigue, nightmares or extra worry in the wake of the disaster, experts said. The Family Counseling

Service in Tuscaloosa has been offering free counseling since the tornado and is now seeing residents come in for treatment. At first, they feel shock and disbelief, followed by anger and resentment. There will be a sense of loss of what used to be before reaching the stage of acceptance, said Larry Deavers, the center’s executive director. There will be progression and regression as the city recovers, and it is normal for residents to experience different degrees of those stages, he said. “It doesn’t mean you can wrap a bow around it and be done with it,” Deavers said. “That’s just the way humans are developed and the way we process loss.” “The intensity of those emotions right now is temporary. The key is to allow one another to talk or not to talk.”

Hundreds march in Chicago, LA to dispel sex assault myths By ERIC JOHNSON CHICAGO — Hundreds of marchers rallied in Chicago and Los Angeles on Saturday for the “SlutWalk” movement aimed at dispelling the notion that a sexual assault victim’s provocative dress could be responsible for an attack. The message struck close

to home for Chicagoan Krystle Szuta, who learned of the march via a Facebook site. “I was told it was my fault, I was told I was asking for it,” Szuta, 26, said of the response she received from being sexually assaulted. “We all know things like that are not someone’s fault. No one asks for it.” The movement ignited across the globe after a Toronto police officer told

university students in January that women should avoid dressing like “sluts” to avoid being raped. In response, big crowds gathered for a “SlutWalk” in Toronto and soon after, aided by social media networking websites, the movement started drawing provocativelydressed crowds of supporters to dozens of cities around the world. “This is about much more

than just that one word — this is about tackling victimblaming and slut-shaming,” according to the website for SlutWalk London, a rally planned for June 11. Parade-goers — some who identify as promiscuous, others not — listened to speeches from authors and poets, stomped their feet to musicians and waved signs, as Bailey Hamilton, 21, did in Chicago on Saturday.

Mladic wary then defiant in dramatic Hague debut By DOUGLAS HAMILTON & AARON GRAYBLOCK THE HAGUE Former Bosnian Serb army commander Ratko Mladic faced the U.N. war crimes tribunal on Friday as a defiant general who never lost a battle, denying the charges against him as “obnoxious” and “monstrous.” Formally charged by a U.N. tribunal which has waited 16 years to see him in the dock, he began with a wary appeal from a “very sick man” but ended with a defiant flourish of his old bravado, predicting he would be acquitted. “The whole world knows who I am. I am General Ratko Mladic,” he said at the end of his first appearance, a tense 100 minutes. “I defended my people, my country ... now I am defending myself,” he told the court and rapt public gallery. “I just have to say that I want to live to see myself a free man.” Sitting in the same

chair as political chiefs Slobodan Milosevic and Radovan Karadzic, coaccused in a conspiracy to carve a Great Serbia from the wreckage of m u l t i - e t h n i c Yugoslavia, Mladic began by greeting the court with a salute. He said he was in poor health and needed more time to study the against indictments him. But by the end of the session, the general in this lifetime soldier had reasserted itself. He told Judge Alphons Orie indignantly he did not want to hear “a single letter or word of that indictment” read out. As expected, Mladic declined to enter a plea, and Orie set his next hearing for July 4. “NO REMORSE” Mladic shook his head in denial as Orie, reading a summary, described the slaughter of 8,000 Muslim men and boys at Srebrenica in July 1995, of which his second-in-command, Radislav Krstic, was convicted of in April 2004. “He showed no remorse, he mocked the

court,” said Ramiza Gurdic whose two sons and husband were killed by Mladic forces. “It took him only three days to kill thousands of our loved ones and now he says he needs two months to read the indictment,” she said, watching Mladic on Bosnia television. Once an intimidating figure on the battlefield, Mladic now looks his 69 years. His mouth drooped slightly at one corner and his speech sounded slurred, the possible result of a stroke. After making the hand signal for a “timeout” to his lawyer Aleksandar Aleksic, he obtained a 10-minute private session with microphones turned off, to discuss his health problems. Afterwards he told the court he had been treated with “fairness and dignity” since his arrest, but had one request. “I don’t want to be helped to walk as if I were some blind cripple. If I want help, I’ll ask for it,” he said.

care of Medical defendants is a primary issue for the tribunal, after the death in custody of Milosevic in 2006, in the fourth year of his trial. Karadzic was arrested in 2008 and has been on trial since October 2009. is also Mladic charged with crimes against humanity for the 43-month siege of Sarajevo from 1992 to 1995 in which 12,000 were killed by Bosnian Serb forces in a sustained campaign of “sniping and shelling to kill, maim, wound and terrorize.” Dressed in a gray striped suit with a gray shirt and sober black checked tie, he frequently wiped his cheeks and mouth, stroked his chin and placed his hand on his forehead. He listened intently to Orie, nodding or shaking a finger. MOTHERS OF SREBRENICA Arrested in a Serbian village, Mladic was extradited by Serbia on Tuesday to become the tribunal’s biggest case. Yemen’s Saleh slightly wounded in palace attack By MOHAMED SUDAM & MOHAMMED GHOBARI SANAA - Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh was slightly wounded when shells struck his palace in Sanaa on Friday, an official said, as fighting intensified that pushed the impoverished country closer toward civil war. Fierce fighting engulfed the Yemeni capital, where residents cowered in their homes as explosions rocked the city, and questions arose over Saleh’s health after he failed to appear at a planned news conference after the sprawling palace was hit. Yemen’s deputy information minister said the 69-year-old president had postponed his appearance

because he was being treated for “scratches.” “The president is in good health and has postponed the press conference... due to scratches,” Abdu alJanadi told journalists. “There is nothing that affects his health.” A senior diplomat in Sanaa said the prime minister, his deputy, the parliament speaker and other aides were hurt and a source inside Saleh’s office confirmed that government officials had been wounded in the attack. He had no details. The state news agency Saba said three presidential guards were killed at a mosque inside the palace compound. “A cowardly attack with an explosive projectile took place during Friday prayers at the presidential palace mosque where ... Saleh and senior government

officials were present. The government blamed the shelling on Hashed tribesmen led by Sadeq al-Ahmar, whose family has backed protesters demanding Saleh’s overthrow. Ahmar later denied responsibility and accused Saleh himself of orchestrating the attack to justify a government escalation of street fighting in the capital. Suspicion also has fallen on breakaway General Ali Mohsen, who defected to the opposition in April and sent his troops to the capital to protect antiSaleh demonstrators. Forces loyal to Saleh later shelled the homes of the leaders of the Hashed tribal federation, security sources said. The United States condemned the escalating violence and called for an orderly and

peaceful transfer of power. “Violence cannot resolve the issues that confront Yemen, and today’s events cannot be a justification for a new round of fighting,” White House press secretary Jay Carney said in a statement. Saleh has exasperated his former U.S. and Saudi allies who had once seen him as a key partner in efforts to combat al Qaeda’s ambitious Yemen-based wing, known as al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP). Yemen has tipped swiftly toward civil war this week, with Hashed tribesmen battling Saleh forces in Sanaa. More than 370 people have been killed, at least 155 of them in the last 10 days, since a popular uprising began in January against Saleh’s nearly 33 years in power.

“the butcher of the Balkans” in the late 1990s for his ruthless campaign to seize and “ethnically cleanse” territory for Serbs following the break-up of the Serb-dominated Yugoslav federation of six republics. nationalists Serb believe Mladic is a hero soldier who simply defended the nation, doing no worse than or Bosnian Croat Muslim army commanders as the federation was torn apart in five years of war that claimed some 130,000 lives. Ending years of anxious waiting to see him to brought to justice, relatives of the dead watched Mladic in court. “I came here today to see if his eyes are still

bloody,” said Munira Subasic, whose 18-yearold son and husband were both killed by Serb forces in Srebrenica. “In 1995 I begged him to let my son go. He listened to me and promised to let him go. I trusted him at that moment. Sixteen years later, I am still searching for my son’s bones.” The International Tribunal for former Yugoslavia, set up in 1993, expects to wind up its work by 2014. It has issued 161 indictments and has now accounted for all but one fugitive. Serbs say the fact that two-thirds of them were Serbian is proof of the court’s bias. Hague prosecutors say it is a reflection of which side carried out the biggest war crimes.

Peru’s Humala edges ahead in polls; markets nervous By PATRICIA VELEZ & TERESA CESPEDES LIMA - Left-winger Ollanta Humala is within striking distance of winning Peru’s presidential election, unsettling financial markets on Friday as investors worry he will impose tighter state control over the economy. Two polls obtained by Reuters showed Humala leading by between 1 and 3.6 percentage points going into Sunday’s election run-off, while another gave his right-wing rival, lawmaker Keiko Fujimori, a 1.2 point lead. Peru’s stocks and currency have swung wildly as Humala narrowed in on, and even edged ahead of, market-favorite Fujimori in polls — all of which show technical ties. Investors worry Humala will implement interventionist policies, boost social spending and undermine fiscal stability in one of the world’s fastest-growing economies. Peru has grown nearly as fast as China over the past few years but a third of Peruvians still live in poverty. “If Humala wins there’s going to be a sell-off,” said Roberto Melzi of Barclays in New York. “It’s a credibility problem around his persona.” Stocks were down 2.9 percent on Friday while the sol currency was almost flat at 2.759 per dollar. Votes from Peruvians overseas could prove crucial, and markets are bracing for the prospect of a recount that could take days. Fujimori’s father Alberto opened Peru to free trade and slayed hyperinflation while he was president in the 1990s, but he was later sent to prison for corruption and for using death squads to crack down on left-wing insurgents. Humala, who as an army commander led a bloodless revolt in 2000 to demand the elder Fujimori step down, says financial markets and corporate executives have no reason to fear him and that he has shed his radical past.

Michelle Obama to visit Africa WASHINGTON - A White House official says Michelle Obama is heading to Africa on an official visit later this month, stopping in South Africa and Botswana where she’ll continue her efforts to encourage young people to get involved in their societies. The first lady also will visit Johannesburg and Cape Town in South Africa and Gaborone, Botswana during the June 21-26 trip. The official said Mrs. Obama’s visit will highlight the important stake the U.S. has in the success of Africa’s many nations, as well as the historic connections between the American people and those who live on the African continent. President Barack Obama’s late father was Kenyan. The official requested anonymity to speak freely before a formal White House announcement of the first lady’s trip.

Clashes in Central African Republic kill 11 BANGUI - Eleven people were killed including eight Chadians in violence targetting Muslims in Bangui, the Chadian and Central African Republic defence ministers said Friday. According to an earlier official toll, seven people were killed and 21 were wounded in the violence, which erupted on Tuesday after the bodies of two children were discovered in the boot of a car belonging to a Muslim. “As a result of unrest following the killing of two Central African boys on (Tuesday), the two delegations deplored the deaths, casualties and major material damage in the two communities including eight dead and several wounded on the Chadian side, three dead and many wounded on the Central African side,” a joint statement said. Chadian Defence Minister Bichara Issa Djadala met his Central African Republic counterpart Jean-Francis Bozize on Thursday. The ministers agreed to speed up investigations over the children’s murders in order to defuse tensions and to “free innocent people jailed following the unrest and to compensate victims of violence,” the statement said. A Chadian defence ministry official told AFP that some 20 Chadians were injured. “The majority of their houses were pillaged or torched. Others fled their homes to seek refuge at the embassy,” the official said. Central African Republic has an 80 percent Christian population, according to official figures, while 10 percent are Muslims. A sizeable immigrant community from neighbouring Chad is mainly Muslim.

No indictment decision in Egyptian’s NYC sex case NEW YORK - Prosecutors are getting more time to investigate the case against an Egyptian businessman accused of sexually abusing a New York City hotel maid. Former LA Black Panther leader Pratt dies at 63

By TOM ODULA NAIROBI, Kenya Former Black Panther Party leader Elmer “Geronimo” Pratt, whose murder conviction was overturned after he spent 27 years in prison for a crime he maintained he did not commit, died early Friday from a medical ailment, an associate said. He was 63. Pratt died just after midnight at his home in Imbaseni village, 15 miles (24 kilometers) from Arusha, Tanzania, where he had lived for at least half a decade, a friend of Pratt’s in Arusha, former Black Panther Pete O’Neal, said. O’Neal said he suspects Pratt died of a heart attack or stroke. Pratt was taken to the hospital on Tuesday and Wednesday with high blood pressure. Pratt was convicted in 1972 of being one of two men who robbed and fatally shot schoolteacher Caroline Olsen on a Santa Monica tennis court in December 1968. No one else was arrested. Pratt claimed he was in Oakland for Black Panther Party meetings the day of the murder, and that FBI agents and police hid and possibly destroyed wiretap evidence that would prove it. The Black Panther Party was an African-American revolutionary leftist organization, active in the United States from 1966 until 1982. It achieved notoriety through its involvement in the Black Power movement and in U.S. politics of the 1960s and 70s. Nigeria Police Raid Stops 32 Pregnant Teens from Selling Their Babies By URI FRIEDMAN Nigerian police are informing journalists that they’ve raided a “baby farm” in the southern city of Aba, rescuing four babies and arresting a doctor who authorities believe buys babies for $160 to $190 (males command higher prices) and illegally sells them to childless couples for up to $6,400, according to the AP.

Reuters adds that the babies may also be sold to witch doctors who use the body parts of infants in rituals or sent to Europe—especially the U.K.—where they are used in welfare fraud schemes. The doctor claims he was simply placing unwanted babies in orphanages. The news outlets reporting the raid aren’t in agreement about the role played by the 32 pregnant teenage

girls—some as young as 15—who were at the Heda clinic when police arrived. The AP, for example, notes that the girls were “arrested” and may face charges for “planning to sell their babies,” and Reuters adds that some girls said they were directed to the clinic by friends who had been there before. But the BBC (and other outlets), citing a Nigerian police chief, claims the girls

were “rescued” after being locked up at the clinic and forced to produce babies, noting that “desperate teenagers with unplanned pregnancies are sometimes lured to clinics.” The BBC also provides some context for the raid. In Nigeria, where UNICEF estimates at least 10 children are sold daily, baby-trafficking is illegal, but it’s very rare for traffickers to be caught and prosecuted.

Rebels in western Libya seize mountain towns By RYAN LUCAS & DIAA HADID BENGHAZI, Libya Libyan rebels broke the government siege of two western mountain towns, a rebel commander said Friday, and NATO pounded ten targets across the country. The heavy bombing and rebel victory, plus the first publicized diplomatic contact between China and the rebel leadership, reflect the continued erosion of Moammar Gadhafi’s power since the eruption in mid-February of uprisings to end his 42year rule. A rebel military leader said Friday his troops had broken the siege of two towns in the western Nafusa mountain range, Yefren and Shakshuk. The latter holds an important power station that feeds a number of local towns. Ending the siege likely will bring relief to local residents. Gadhafi’s troops had cut their supply lines

and subjected them to random shelling since April, local Col. Jumaa Ibrahim of the region’s rebel military council said via Skype. Ibrahim said rebel forces freed the towns on Thursday then moved north to clash with Gadhafi forces in the village of Bir Ayyad. There were no immediate reports of casualties. “Our aim is the capital,” he said, though it remains unlikely that the area’s fighters will pose a serious threat to Gadhafi’s hold on Tripoli, 45 miles (70 kilometers) northwest. The victories could help the small bands of rebels in the Nafusa mountains coordinate by opening a key road between their hilltop towns and villages. Still, their numbers remain small compared the those in the large rebel-held territories in east Libya. Also Friday, at least 10 NATO airstrikes hit the capital and elsewhere in Libya. It was not immediately clear if there were any casual-

ties. Four early morning blasts shook central Tripoli, targeting a barracks near the sprawling compound where Gadhafi sometimes lives, said a government official, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with government policy. Six earlier strikes targeted a police station and a military base outside the capital, the official said. A NATO spokeswoman, speaking by phone from Naples, said the alliance hit a storage facility for military vehicles in Gadhafi’s compound. In a statement, NATO said it also targeted surfaceto-air missile launchers and armored personnel carriers near Tripoli, as well as other targets elsewhere. Also Friday, a U.N. official said the world body’s refugee agency would meet with a Libyan woman who claimed she was gangraped by Gadhafi’s troops. She was deported Thursday from Qatar where she had sought refuge and was

flown against her will to Benghazi, the official said. Benghazi is the Libyan rebels’ de facto capital. Speaking in Geneva, the official, Adrian Edwards, said his agency was with Iman el-Obeidi when she was taken from her Qatar hotel against her will. He said she is a recognized refugee, and her deportation violated international law. U.S. State Department spokesman Toner told Mark reporters in Washington that the U.S. was “monitoring the situation” to ensure al-Obeidi’s safety and make sure she finds “appropriate asylum.” In March, al-Obeidi rushed into Tripoli’s Rixos Hotel where all foreign correspondents are forced to stay while covering the part of Libya under Gadhafi’s control, and shouted out her story of being stopped at a a checkpoint, dragged away and gang-raped by soldiers. As she spoke emotionally and as photographers and reporters recorded her

words, government minders, whose job is to escort reporters around the area, jumped her and dragged her away. She disappeared for several days, then turned up in Tunisia and later Qatar. She was heard from little until Thursday, when she was suddenly expelled from Qatar and ended up in Benghazi, the Libyan rebels’ de facto capital. No explanation was forthcoming from Qatar. Rebel spokesman Jalal el-Gallal said alObeidi arrived in Benghazi by plane. “She’s welcome to stay, this is her country,” elGallal told The Associated Press. Libyan authorities have alternately labeled al-Obeidi a drunk, a prostitute and a thief. Al-Obeidi says she was targeted by Gadhafi’s troops because she is from Benghazi, the rebel stronghold. Her rape claim could not be independently verified. The Associated Press identifies only rape victims who volunteer their

names. Human rights violations are one aspect of the rebels’ complaints against the Gadhafi regime. This week a report by a U.N. body said it found evidence of war crimes and crimes against humanity by Gadhafi’s government, and also charged that the rebels have committed abuses. The Chinese Foreign Ministry said Friday that China’s ambassador to Qatar recently met with the head of Libya’s rebel council, the first known meeting between the two sides. China abstained in the U.N. Security Council vote authorizing NATO military action in Libya. The conflict in Libya is nearly four months along, but the situation on the ground appears mostly stalemated. NATO airstrikes have kept the outgunned rebels from being overrun, but the rebels have been unable to mount an effective offensive against Gadhafi’s better equipped armed forces. Gadhafi’s regime has been slowly crumbling

Hunt for ever-deeper South Africa gold still costs lives By ED STODDARD C A R LETONVILLE, South Africa - The massive drill is deafening as it bores into the rock of the world’s deepest mine, where heat and humidity sap the strength of gold miners who never know when the next rock fall might kill or maim. At 3.8 km (2.4 miles) underground, it feels like the bottom of the world. Toil and blood have brought humans to this spot, the lowest in AngloGold Ashanti’s Mponeng mine, 60 kms

(35 miles) southwest of Johannesburg. At such depths it is impossible to ignore the thousands of metric tones of rock overhead — unnerving in a region prone to seismic activity. “Sometimes you feel a tremor down here. You get used to them,” said section manager Geert Jacobs, clad in overalls and hard hat as he directed journalists through a tunnel. But tremors can be fatal and the following day a rock fall in the mine killed a worker — the first death in 2011 at Mponeng. Mining was halted while it was investigated, which has become standard procedure since South Africa set out to cut the heavy

death toll in mines, chiefly among black workers, that the authorities tolerated before white minority rule ended in 1994. According to government data, 855 miners were killed in South Africa in 1986 but that number has been falling, hitting 220 in 2007 — a period when the mine labor force also shrank. But this positive trend has had setbacks. BET on Rihanna video

Jack Warner back in TT

OF PORT SPAIN, Trinidad The suspended vice president of the world football’s body, governing FIFA, Austin Jack Warner returned home last night insisting that he has no plans to step down as a government minister, while blasting critics, including ministerial colleagues, over his ongoing battle to clear his name over allegations of bribery.

BET Networks has issued a statement clarifying its decision to air Rihanna’s Man Down video which has sparked a lot of debate since its launch on Tueday. “BET Networks has a comprehensive set of standards and guidelines that are applied to all of our content. The Rihanna “Man Down” video complied with these guidelines and was approved for air. At the same time, it is clear that the “Man Down” video has sparked a passionate dialogue and we will continue this conversation with our audience on “106 & Park.” Some local and international groups have already come out against the violent content in the video. The video, parts of which were shot in Jamaica, opens with Rihanna using a small revolver to shoot a man. The viewers see a graphic view of the man with a pool of blood streaming near his head. It then flashes back to the previous day, when she was sexually attacked. The video ends with Rihanna holding a gun in her hand. (CM)

NWU moots national strike By LEAON NASH KINGSTON, Jamaica -The National Workers Union (NWU), is pushing for other unions which represent public sector workers to organise a national strike. This came after discussions on the payment of the seven per cent increase owed to government employees failed to bring the desired results. NWU President, Vincent Morrison, said the government’s offer to pay the seven per cent by September and retroactive sums over a five-year period, beginning April 2013 was an insult to the workers.

FIFA on Sunday suspended Warner while its Ethics Committee conducts an investigation in allegations that he and former presidential candidate Mohamed Bin Hammam and two Caribbean Football Union (CFU) officials were involved in offering US$40,000 to national associations of the Caribbean Football union (CFU) at a meeting on May 10 and 11 here, in return for their votes in the FIFA presidential election last Wednesday. But Warner, who is also the Minister of Works and Transport in the Trinidad and Tobago, and has received a public endorsement of support from Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar, told reporters that he has no intention of stepping down as a government minister and that the allegations made against him “was much

bigger than Jack Warner” but against the entire Caribbean football federation. “I will give everything I have to uphold the Caribbean,” Warner said. “I truly am thankful for the support of the Prime Minister. Within 24 hours I got a letter of support from the Prime Minister indicating her support. I want to formally thank her,” Warner said adding that he understood his critics call. “I understand my critics. I would have preferred that if their criticism was not motivated by blood lust or malice. They are smelling blood and I say I understand this but I do not accept this,” he said. Warner expressed

Jack Warner disappointment that Legal Affairs Minister Prakash Ramadhar, who is also seeking the leadership of the Congress of the People (COP) party, had publicly called on him to step down pending the outcome of the probe. The COP is the second biggest partner in the five-member People’s Partnership coalition government here. “My disappointment was Prakash Ramadhar, as a lawyer he should know better and he and I were good friends until now,” Warner said, adding that he would not be used for “political mileage”. “How can you be a political leader? This for me is nonsense. I am heartened by the

stand that Anil (Sports Minister and COP member) took, I’m totally disappointed in Prakash Ramadhar... But if he believes this will help him, I wish him well,” Warner said. He said if he had to step down, he would of his own accord and he did not need to be prompted to do so. Warner stressed that people should not cast judgments too early. “I know people want blood, they want Jack Warner but let us not be too hasty,” he said. Warner was greeted by several government ministers and supporters, some armed with placards reading “We support Jack Warner”. “I must maintain I did no wrong,” he told supporters. (CMC)

73 per cent of rape victims know their attackers KINGSTON, Jamaica - Seventythree per cent of rape victims know their attackers, according to analysis by the N a t i o n a l Intelligence Bureau (NIB) of attacks carried out in in Jamaica. The Jamaica Constabulary Force

(JCF) said in this weeks Force Orders that it was releasing the findings, based on a 16-month study period up to April 2011, in an attempt to reduce the risk of attacks. Hot spots were identified as: Pechon Street and Matthews Lane in West Kingston; Bull Bay and Elletson Road in Kingston East; Jack’s Hill, Shenstone and Phoenix Avenue

in St Andrew Central; Westchester, Hellshire and Portmore Mall in St Catherine South and Dump Up Beach, Cornwall Courts and Barnett Oval St James. The attacks studied by the NIB, showed that those aged 10 to 20 years old, are most vulnerable to rapes. 58 per cent of the victims profiled fell in that age and occupational category. Most victims are

raped in their homes; at their friends’ homes; travelling to or from schools and work; and while walking alone along lonely roadways. Rapists also carried out attacks in their own homes. The rapists are mostly young male between the age of 14 and 25. Rapists either operate singularly or in groups numbering up to nine.

Haiti, Iraq show for first time at political Venice Biennale By NUALA CALVI PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Some of the world’s most troubled nations, including Haiti, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zimbabwe and Iraq, are to take part in the prestigious Venice Biennale art exhibition from June 4. Twelve extra countries have national pavilions in the Italian city this year, either for the first time or following a long period of absence, bringing the total to a record 89. The Biennale, which takes place every two years, was founded in 1895 and celebrates contemporary art from around the world. National pavilions showcasing the work of artists from each country were originally built in the Giardini (public gardens) and have since spread to locations across the city.

Haiti, Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia are among nations that have pavilions for the first time in 2011, while the Democratic Republic of Congo makes its first appearance since 1968, India joins after a gap of 29 years and Zimbabwe and Iraq join after a gap of 21 years. Other rejoining countries include Costa Rica and Cuba, which have not had individual pavilions for more than 15 years. “We have increased the number of pavilions from 77 to 89, with some very interesting results,” said Paolo Baratta, Venice Biennale president. “For instance, we now cover almost 100% of South America. We have Bangladesh for the first time, and Saudi Arabia, and I’m particularly happy with the presence of Haiti.” Baratta said the presence of South American

countries had been boosted by the ItaloLatin American Institute, which has a large exhibition space in Venice it has used to host work from smaller countries. Crisis-hit countries such as Haiti — devastated by last year’s earthquake — are motivated by a desire to show that they can overcome the challenges they face, he added: “They want to show that they are alive and vibrant, and show it through their presence in the world of art. This for us is of the greatest interest.” The Haiti exhibition takes “Death and Fertility” as its theme, suggesting the country’s ability to regenerate itself after tragedy. It includes Jean Herard Celeur’s “The Horsemen of the Apocalypse,” which features human skulls on metal skeletons sporting enormous phalluses.

Chavez: We won’t tolerate rebels in Venezuela By CHRISTOPHER TOOTHAKER CARACAS, Venezuela - President Hugo Chavez said Thursday he will not to tolerate the presence of Colombian guerrillas in Venezuelan territory, adding that he’s confident Colombia’s government would in turn capture any opponents conspiring against his government. “We are not going to allow the presence of any armed group,” including rebels, paramilitary fighters and drug traffickers in Venezuelan territory, Chavez said before meeting with former Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. “We have fulfilled our obligations.” The socialist leader’s comments came a day after Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos announced that a top commander of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, was captured

across the border in Venezuela. Venezuelan security forces captured Guillermo Torres, better known by his alias “Julian Conrado,” and later contacted Colombian authorities after identifying the rebel leader, Chavez said. Venezuela announced in a statement that Torres would soon be extradited to Colombia. Venezuela has for years been a refuge for Colombia’s leftist guerrillas. But Chavez and Santos have forged a pragmatic friendship

despite their deep ideological differences and promised to work together to prevent FARC rebels from seeking refuge in Venezuela. Chavez suggested the arrest of Torres indicates that collaboration between the South American neighbors is producing positive results, and he said he expects the cooperation to continue. Torres is the most senior FARC commander captured since 2004. He is on the FARC’s general staff, No. 2 in the command chain after the rebels’ seven-member secretariat, and is also renowned for composing and performing rebel anthems during failed 1999-2002 peace dialogues. The United States had offered a $2.5 million reward for the FARC leader’s capture.

The exhibition is housed in an outdoor, temporary structure made from sea freight — a containers reminder of the fact that the artists involved in the project come from a very poor district of Port-au-Prince, Haiti’s capital. Zimbabwe’s pavilion is the result of a joint drive by the country’s culture ministry, the National Gallery in Harare and the British Council, and marks the first time an individual country in sub-Saharan Africa has had official representation at Venice. Raphael Chikukwa, curator of the pavilion, said it was “pivotal” in establishing a platform for artists after the isolation caused by the country’s political situation. “Zimbabwe has been a zone of silence with little access to platforms of exchange through which it can communicate,” Chikukwa said. Misheck Masamvu’s painting “Deferred Dreams” seems to capture this sentiment, with a nightmarish depiction of a person

asleep under a blanket with a creeping growth of blood-red vines. Meanwhile the number of Arab countries with an official presence at Venice has been growing steadily in recent years. “Arab countries were very rare 20 years ago — we had only Egypt,” said Vittorio Urbani, co-commissioner of the Iraq pavilion. “Now we have Syria, UAE, Saudi Arabia — and we had Lebanon until this year. “These countries like to show they belong to the international arena,” he added. “Think of Iran — they’re not expected to be in favor of the West, but they come to Venice.” Iraq’s pavilion includes artists such as Ahmed Alsoudani and Halim al Karim, who grew up experiencing the Iran-Iraq war, Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait, economic sanctions and subsequent artistic isolation. “The exhibition means they can bring to an international audience cultural themes, not always scenes of bombs, suicide attacks and Saddam

Hussein — all the stuff related to Iraq,” said Urbani. Bangladeshi artist Tayeba Begum Lipi, who is exhibiting in and co-commissioned her national pavilion, is motivated by a similar desire. “People are always getting bad news about Bangladesh, hearing about it being a poor country,” she said. “I think this will make them see us in a new light.” Lipi’s work includes a series of bras made from razor blades and a two-channel video called “I Wed Myself,” in which the artist appears as both bride and groom. Contemporary, political art like hers struggles to find a market in her home country — another reason why she wants to be at Venice. “Local collectors only want to buy paintings, not things that are a bit more experimental,” she said. “But the pavilion is creating a real buzz. It’s really a great opportunity to be here — I don’t know why we didn’t come all these years.”

Raul Castro turns 80 with little fanfare By PETER ORSI HAVANA - Raul Castro quietly turned 80 years old Friday, with Cubans hoping the president has enough pep in his step to lift the country from a deep economic malaise. Neither Castro nor older brother Fidel have traditionally thrown big birthday bashes, and there was no word of any plan for a public celebration. Government Web portal Cubadebate published a photo essay showing Castro in a variety of poses: smiling in his military uniform, clasping hands with Fidel at a Communist Party Congress, wearing a yarmulke and lighting a menorah during a ceremony with Cuba’s Jewish community. But it later removed

the essay from its home page. Cuba is in the process of implementing economic reforms allowing more private sector activity, but some here were disappointed when an April party summit to consider the changes named a leadership consisting mostly of the same graying, oldguard figures. “Imagine, all those old men,” said 52-yearold Havana resident Camila Salgado, referring to the likes of Jose Ramon Machado Ventura, 80, and Ramiro Valdes, 79, Castro’s principal deputies. “I wonder where are the young people? And it worries me because I don’t know if (Castro) will have time to make all the changes.” Even if he is holding any celebrations behind closed doors,

Castro was in a good mood on the eve of his 80th, bantering with reporters about his advancing age. Congratulations came earlier this week from President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela, a key Cuban ally that provides the island with deeply discounted fuel. During a televised Cabinet meeting, Chavez compared Raul to Fidel, whom he frequently refers to as an immortal. “Raul, 80 years!” Chavez marveled. “He’s caught up with Fidel, because Fidel stopped (aging) at 80.” Emma Pedroso, a 49-year-old in Havana’s leafy Miramar neighborhood, said she hopes Castro has a happy birthday in the company of his brother and family, and then works hard to implement the reforms.

For the conclusions of these stories check out the June 2nd - June 8th, 2011 issue of The New American, which hits newsstands every Thursday British singer Leona Lewis has taken aim at critics of her personality, insisting she “couldn’t care less” if they think she’s dull. The star shot to fame as a and retiring shy wannabe on Simon Cowell’s British show The X Factor in 2006, and went on to superstardom in the U.K. and the U.S. after winning the competition. However, Lewis is angry music fans presume she’s boring just because she’s not as outlandish as the likes of Lady Gaga, and she’s adamant her strengths lie in good quality songs. She says, “I don’t care what anyone says. I’m not boring. Unless you know me, I don’t really care about your opinions. I couldn’t care less. Lady Gaga does her crazy thing and she is great. I definitely have something different to offer. I’m all about the music and songs.”

Cee Lo Green has confirmed speculation Gnarls Barkley’s fan favorite tune Who’s Gonna Save My Soul is all about the passing of James Brown. The Crazy singer made the big reveal during a recent taping of VH1 show Storytellers, explaining the song is supposed to empower anyone grieving the loss of a loved one - and he wrote it as he was dealing with the 2006 death of the Godfather of Soul. He says, “The song is actually about the passing of James Brown... It has to do with everyone; heartbreak, loss, regret, helplessness, hopelessness, and I felt all of the above when we lost James Brown - because he embodied everything. “James Brown is my father... I got what I needed from him - I got guidance, I got style... integrity, I got consistency... He taught me how to dance too. When he

New dad Nick Cannon struggles to fit all his projects in to his busy schedule, surviving on just four hours of broken sleep every day. The star and his wife Mariah Carey welcomed twins last month, but Cannon has refused to cut back his working commitments, still broadcasting his New York radio show and hosting reality series America’s Got Talent, which premiered its sixth season in the U.S. on Tuesday night. But Cannon pays a hefty price for his busy schedule as he can only fit in just a few hours of sleep around work and his duties as a dad.

In a recent interview, Lauren London revealed that Lil Wayne almost wifed her. She also explained that she and Wayne were not some one-night stand. Lauren London: “I met Dwayne when I was 15 years old. I’ve known him a very long time, and we were in a relationship that didn’t make it. We tried more than once to revive it, and we were engaged briefly years ago, but we eventually parted ways. People see the “Lil’ Wayne” persona and think they know who he really is. My son’s father is an intelligent, loving and lovable person who will always be a dear friend. That is all.”

Rihanna stopped by The Today Show to talk about her hair, pre-performance rituals, and what she would’ve become if she wasn’t an entertainer. Not sure of the exact name of the color of her hair, she said it’s a mixture of

different reds. She said, “ It’s like copper-ish, red-ish.” If she wasn’t an entertainer, Rihanna said she would’ve studied psychology. “Something I was also interested in. I really enjoy observing, reading, and analyzing situations for what they really are,” she said. Before hitting up the stage, Rihanna warms up, drinks tea, prays and then gets dressed as a ritual. Lastly, she would love to collaborate with Depeche Mode because she really likes them. Queensbridge, New York rap star Nas has announced the title of his new upcoming solo album. The rapper took to Twitter early this morning (May 28th), to reveal the name of the album, which is titled Life is Good. In published reports, the 37year-old rapper said Life is Good will feature production from a variety of new producers, as well as veteran Salaam Remi and other notable producers. Nas’ last official studio album was 2008’s Untitled release. Cadbury recently released advertisements for their Bliss chocolate bars, a “dreamy chocolate truffle.” On one of the ads, the British confectionary company included the tagline ‘Move over Naomi, there’s a new diva in town.” Upon seeing this, Naomi Campbell, 41 year old supermodel, was not pleased. The way Campbell sees it, Cadbury is placing her in the same league as chocolate. In a statement sent to CNN, Campbell complains that the ad is “insulting and hurtful.” This kind of reaction isn’t surprising, as Campbell is known for her, well, diva-like antics. She’s been accused several times for violence and abuse against

ly falling in love with the single, there are others who are less inclined to simply accept anything that the queen gives us. Myself included. I have to be honest, the song sucks. Big time. I am a Beyonce fan. Not her biggest fan. But I dig much of her music. I also am a part of the generation that grew up with Beyonce. I remember the first time I saw the video for Destiny’s Child’s single “No No No”. I remember when they blew up into super stardom. I was there to see the ugly break up of the group and all of the nasty rumors about Beyonce. I was also there when “Crazy In Love” blew and made her an official super star; out shining her time in Destiny’s Child. I was also there to see her grow and mature with the content of her music. Sure she has her make your booty roll ladies singles but she also has singles that touch women on a deeper level. Deep as one can get from a Beyonce single. For instance touching on women giving too much in love and never being reciprocated from the man that they love.

The Queen is back. Well, the queen to some. I am referring to Beyonce Knowles. While it can be argued that she is a queen to some and a toad to others, there is no doubt that the chick is bad. Bad meaning good. So bad that every time she drops an album or a single, we expect for it to be hotter than chicken grease on a June morning. For her not to deliver said hotness would be an atrocity to some. So after months of blogs hyping us up with news of her being in the studio working with hot producers, and finally a release date for a single, we expect that s**t to be hot. Some expect it to be life changing. Yes, there are some people who really feel this strongly towards Beyonce. Unfortunately for her, the first single to be released from Beyonce titled “Girls Who Run The World” has been receiving mixed reviews. Some of them luke warm. Officials: U.S. not affected by European E. coli outbreak By STEVEN REINBERG U.S. health officials sought Friday to reassure Americans that there is little chance the deadly new strain of E. coli bacteria affecting Germany and other European countries will have any significant impact here. “This outbreak has not affected the U.S.,” David Elder, director of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Regional Operations, said during a Friday afternoon news conference. The source of the outbreak in Europe — which has been blamed for 18 deaths — remains unknown, but produce is a likely suspect, health officials said. “Produce remains safe and there is no reason for Americans to alter where they shop, what they buy, what they eat,” he added. “The U.S. food

supply is not in jeopardy.” As a precaution, the FDA has taken the step of detaining any shipments of tomatoes, lettuce and cucumbers arriving from Germany and Spain. Samples from these shipments will be tested for E. coli before being released into the U.S. market, Elder said. “Any products found to be contaminated will be refused admission into the U.S. and any future shipments will be detained upon entry,” he said. Elder noted that produce from Europe makes up less than 0.2 percent of all produce imported into the United States, and very little of that European produce comes into the country this time of the year. Chris Braden, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Foodborne Waterborne and Environmental Diseases divi-

sion, said that “the strain of E. coli causing illness in Europe is very rare, and [the] CDC is not aware of any confirmed cases of this infection ever reported in the United States.” To date there have been four suspected cases of infection in the United States, Braden said, and “in each case the suspected case has been identified as persons who recently traveled to Hamburg, Germany.” “At this time we have no reason to believe and no expectation that this will spread in our country,” he said. Adding a word of caution, Don Kraemer, the FDA’s deputy director of the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, said during the press conference that “we haven’t had this strain of E. coli in the United States and hopefully we never will.” “It’s not impossible to have

an outbreak from pathogenic E. coli in the U.S., but we do think the controls we have in place now significantly reduce the risk,” he said. Meanwhile, health officials in Germany said Friday that there were signs the outbreak may be easing, even though the number of people sickened by the new strain of E. coli was still rising. But the officials cautioned that it was too soon to say the worst is over, and the source of the contamination remains unidentified. Nearly 200 new cases of E. coli infection were reported in Germany — northern Germany is the epicenter of the outbreak — during the first two days of June, the Robert Koch Institute disease control center said. However, new infections peaked on May 21 and May 22, and have been falling since, the Associated Press reported. Nearly 1,733 people in the

country have been sickened by the bacteria, including 520 who have a potentially fatal complication that can cause kidney failure. The World Health Organization said 10 other European nations and the United States also have reported a total of 90 people who have fallen ill. All but two had recently visited northern Germany or, in one case, had contact with a visitor from the region, the AP said. The Los Angeles Times reported Friday that the CDC is now advising Americans who visit Germany, especially northern Germany, to not eat raw tomatoes, fresh cucumbers and leafy salads. The agency also advises anyone who has traveled to the country and has become ill with symptoms of E. coli poisoning — bloody diarrhea, stomach cramps or more serious symptoms — to see a doctor immediately.

Hula-Hoop might help Having more toys may boost shed unwanted pounds exercise levels in kids

The Hula-Hoop, a large ring that can be gyrated around the waist, gained intense popularity in the 1950s and now it seems to be re-emerging as a hot trend in weight loss, a new study has found. “Hooping” expends the same amount of energy as walking 4 to 4.5 miles per hour — enough to help a person firm up and slim down, according to a news release from the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). And “it’s becoming a popular form of choreographed group exercise,” study author John Porcari, of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, said in the news release. The study examined 16 women, ranging in age from 16 to 59, who regularly attended choreographed hooping classes. The researchers measured the women’s oxygen consumption, heart rate and rate of physical exertion as they completed a 30-minute videoled hooping class. The researchers set out “to determine the effect of hooping on physical fitness and whether or not the intensity falls within ACSM guidelines for improving cardiovascular fitness,” Porcari said. The study found that the average heart rate for the 30-

minute class was 151 beats per minute, and the average caloric expenditure was equivalent to 210 calories for 30 minutes of hooping. The total energy cost, the researchers revealed, was enough to help people control their body weight. The findings were to be presented this week at the American College of Sports Medicine annual meeting, held in conjunction with the World Congress on Exercise Is Medicine, in Denver. Experts note that research presented at meetings isn’t subjected to the same type of scrutiny given to research published in peer-reviewed journals.

Providing children with more toys to play with may improve their level of physical activity, researchers say. The new study also found that having more active toys to choose from boosts the intensity of play among children, particularly girls. In the study, led by Denise Feda, postdoctoral associate at the University of Buffalo in New York, researchers offered three different quantities of toys to 36 children ranging in age from 8 to 12 years. After being given one, three or five toys to play with, the children’s behaviors, heart rates and activity counts were monitored for one hour. The investigators found that overall playtime jumped by 95 percent among the children who had three or five toys. Gender also came into play. The heart rate data collected by the researchers revealed that girls given more toys played with greater intensity than boys with the same number of choices. The report did not specify what types of toys were used. Children and adolescents should participate in at least one hour of physical activity each day, according to the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the

Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. The study authors pointed out that their findings could help children reach this goal. “The results of this study are significant, considering the epidemic of childhood obesity plaguing this country,” Feda said in an ACSM news release. “Adults looking for

effective ways to increase their child’s exercise time should take a look at toy variety. Adding an active toy or two could help, especially for girls. Girls can be motivated to engage in equal physical activity as boys by simply providing them with a greater choice of active toys,” she concluded.

Youth advocate chosen to administer Union City father and girl, 8, $100M Facebook grant to Newark schools are in home invasion; police

are calling a “targeted attack”

By VICTORIA ST. MARTIN NEWARK - In September, Newark was the surprise recipient of a $100 million gift from Facebook’s founder to help fix its beleaguered schools. Now, it’s chosen someone to help figure out how to best spend all that money. Gregory Taylor, a lawyer, educator and veteran advocate for at-risk youth, has been chosen as the chief executive officer of the Foundation for Newark’s Future, the organization that will administer the $100 million from Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, as well as $100 million in matching pledges, all to be spread over five years. He is to start June 13. Taylor, 43, of Ann Arbor, Mich. is coming to Newark from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, a philanthropic organization, where he was the vice president of programs. At Kellogg, Taylor also worked as the national director of an early childhood program and he was the past senior director and chief program officer for the Fannie Mae Foundation. Taylor says the foundation is still working on how the money will be spent, but said the foundation will emphasize improving early childhood education, teacher quality, school governance. He said the money will also go towards exploring new school models, which will include charter schools and creating partnerships with universities. But Taylor, who was raised in New York and California, said the money is a significant gift but it’s not

N.J. county, state prosecutors not allowed to carry guns after retirement By MARYANN SPOTO TRENTON - County and state prosecutors are not considered law enforcement officers under New Jersey’s strict gun laws that allow retired cops to carry weapons, an appellate panel ruled yesterday. The decision by the threejudge panel upholds a lower court’s finding that Giles

Casaleggio, a former assistant prosecutor in Union, Passaic and Morris counties before becoming a deputy attorney general, does not qualify for a gun permit as a retired law enforcement officer. The court said New Jersey law says specifically that deputy attorneys general and assistant prosecutors can carry weapons while holding those jobs, but says nothing

about after they retire. “Unlike police officers and investigators, both assistant prosecutors and deputy attorneys general are ‘lawyers first and foremost’ whose ‘essential responsibility is to provide legal advice,’ “the court wrote, referring to the statement accompanying the Senate bill creating the law in 1996. “Their primary duty ‘is to perform legal services in connection with law enforcement.’”

It appears that at least two suspects were waiting outside the victims’ home at 10th Street and Kennedy Boulevard when the two arrived home yesterday afternoon, Police Chie Charles Everett said last night. The men pushed into their apartment and there was a struggle during which two shots were fired, Everett said. The girl, judged to be about 8 years old, and her father described as being in his early 30s, where subdued and bound with duct tape, Everett said, adding that other items used for restraining people were found in the home. As of Monday night, police still had not thoroughly inter viewed the male victim because he was receiving medica treatment, Everett said. The little girl was also taken to the hospital but appeared to be uninjured, he said. One of the shots struck a water pipe in the large apart ment building, but no one was wounded by the gunfire and no one in the building called police after the shots were fired he said. Police aren’t sure how the victims escaped. “It’s possible one victim fled out of the apartment and was pursued, but there were people around outside and they (the robbers) might have cut their losses at that point and fled,” Everett said. “This was definitely a targeted attack.” Oscar Dominguez, vice president at MACO Office Source a Kennedy Boulevard and 10th Street, said that around 3:30 p.m. he heard a woman screaming and when he looked through the glass door of his office, he saw a bloodied man rolling at the curbside. “He was bleeding all over his face,” said Dominguez. “He had about 10 cuts, some big gashes.” A woman at the bus stop was helping the man and had pu her sweater under his head and the man’s daughter was standing nearby, said Dominguez, adding that both the man and his daughter had duct tape around their necks. Another person at the bus stop said she took the plate number of a fleeing van, Dominguez said, and Everett con firmed police are checking out the plate number. “My assistant brought out paper towels and the woman who was helping him tried to stopped the man’s bleeding,” Dominguez said. When cops arrived, the man yelled, “They robbed me,” Dominguez said. Nothing appears to have been taken from the apartment Everett said.

Blaze in vacant North Bergen building

NORTH BERGEN - Firefighters extinguished a two-alarm blaze early yesterday that had engulfed a vacant two-story building on Kennedy Boulevard near 52nd Street. Responding to the fire at 5203 Kennedy Blvd. at 1:42 a.m. firefighters found the building “heavily involved,” said North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue Deputy Chief Charles Thomas. Radiant heat from the fire was so intense that it blew ou the windows of an adjacent vacant building and partially melted two vehicles parked nearby, Thomas said. The fire, the cause of which has not been determined, orig inated in the basement and burned through the first floor, he said. Firefighters had the blaze under control by 2:42 a.m. bu remained on the scene to prevent flare-ups and conduct a search of the building’s basement, Thomas said, noting vagrants had been seen entering and exiting the building in the past. The Division of Fire Safety will investigate the fire and evaluate the structure, Thomas said. - SUMMER DAWN HORTILLOSA

The Roots plotting ‘orchestral’ new album By MONICA HERRERA For the follow-up to the Roots’ 2010 album, “How I Got Over,” drummer ?uestlove says the veteran hip-hop band is planning a “concept album” with orchestral arrangements. “This is going to be our first full-fledged narrative concept album,” ?uestlove told Billboard.com at New York’s Buddakan, where he and frontman Black Thought hosted an event Wednesday to promote two upcoming events in their hometown of Philadelphia: this Saturday’s Roots Picnic festival, and Philly’s Fourth of July Jam. “It’s going to be a challenge to figure out how to get from point A to B — or in this case, point B to point A,” he hinted, “and have it seem natural.” Black Thought added that conceptually, the album will stem from the “same idea” as “How I Got Over,” but “kind of flipped. Instead of from dark to light, it’s an album that

goes from light to dark,” he explained. Two song sketches have been composed thus far, ?uestlove said, and just this week the group had its first official meeting about the “unusual spelling” of the album’s title, which they’re keeping under wraps for now. “It’s a one-word title that’s spelled incorrectly ... what a way to tease you, right?” he laughed. As for the sound of the album, ?uestlove said, “It’s

going to be heavy on sort of orchestral chamber music with harder beats in it,” inspired by a recent collaborative performance that the drummer did in April for the Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts. “I did this project called the Philly-Paris Lockown, which was sort of a period of French music from Debussy to Satie and Stravinsky ... it was almost like the dawning of jazz in the early 1900s,” he said of the performance,

which also featured 18 classical musicians and French singer/songwriter Keren Ann. While Black Thought said the Roots hope to have their new album out by this fall, he acknowledged that a 2012 release is more likely. “In a perfect world it would come out in November, but in this world that we live in, maybe January? Maybe February?” he laughed. “I don’t know, but hopefully it’s gonna be in a timely fashion.” In the meantime, the Roots have plenty to keep them busy. The group lined up a genre-spanning list of acts for its fourth annual Roots Picnic, including Nas, Esperanza Spalding, Wiz Khalifa, Yelawolf, Mac Miller, Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, and more. ?uestlove is especially excited for his sister, Donn T, to make her debut on the festival’s second stage, as well as Little Dragon, whom he calls an “extreme favorite of mine,”

and the Dismemberment Plan. “They set on fire when they reunited for the show, and I hope they put that same energetic performance on for us,” he said. “It’s something we always wanted to do,” Black Thought said of the Picnic, which is now in its fourth year. “Having been a part of so many festival tours like Lollapalooza and Smokin’ Grooves — with the Beastie Boys and Cypress Hill, and the whole genre mixing thing that used to go on back in the ‘90s and early ‘00s — we always wanted to bring that element to Philly, to bring it home.” And although the Roots will be performing at Philly’s 4th of July Jam for the third time, the MC added that they’re particularly looking forward to this year’s event because “it’s our first time as the official curators.” Among the acts they’ve picked to perform: Earth, Wind & Fire, Michael McDonald, Estelle and Sara Bareilles. “It’s become a festival now,” he said. “It’s super exciting.”

Beyonce explains Patti LaBelle sued over Houston scuffle her 1-year sabbatical Beyonce has opened up about her hiatus from music in an article written for a magazine. The pop superstar decided to take a nine-month extended vacation after working non-stop for several years and she has revealed she used her break to spend time with her family and husband Jay-Z, visit museums, attend concerts and learn to cook. She has written about her experiences for the latest issue of Essence magazine in an article titled “Eat, Play, Love” - a play on the book “Eat, Pray, Love,” which became a movie starring Julia Roberts. Beyonce writes, “I had talked about taking a vacation before, but always ended up in the studio after two weeks, so no one believed me. This time, though, I was serious. I was going to give myself a year to do the things I never get to do. “Simple things like play with my nephew, pick him

HOUSTON — A West Point cadet is suing singer Patti LaBelle over a confrontation with her bodyguards at a Houston airport that left him with a head injury. Richard King, 23, alleges the singer ordered her threemember security team to rough him up for unknown reasons at the passenger pick-up area outside George Bush International Airport in March. King told The Houston Chronicle that incident left him with a concussion and led to the U.S. Military Academy to terminate him for his

senior year and place him on an 18-month mentorship program. “I’ve invested so much of my time, so much of my effort,” said King. “It almost seems that it’s gone down the drain.” The newspaper said King claims to remember nothing about the attack but a former security guard said it began when LaBelle’s bodyguards ordered King, who was talking on his cellphone, to move away from her limo. Houston police took a report on the fracas, but the Chronicle said the department was reviewing the

actions of the officers, who posed for photos with the singer after their investigation, acted appropriately.

DETROIT — Motor City drivers lined up for blocks for free gas Friday, courtesy of a grateful TV judge, Greg Mathis. Mathis, whose syndicated “Judge Mathis” show is in its 12th season, offered up to $92 worth of free gasoline apiece to the first 92 drivers to show up at a northwest Detroit Mobil station. He told the Detroit Free Press it was a gift to the peo-

ple who elected him to District Court despite his youthful criminal record. “LA didn’t elect me judge,” he said. “Chicago didn’t elect me judge. Detroiters took a chance on me. It’s just the right thing to do. And when you’re blessed, you have to look out for the rest.” The giveaway took place near the Mathis Community Center, which he funds. Its activities include self-

improvement classes, food and clothing assistance, and training for ex-convicts. “No matter what international fame he’s achieved, he’s still a hometown guy,” said WMXD-FM’s Frankie Darcell, who announced the location on the air. “Everybody’s happy. 15th Annual American Black Film Festival honors Keenen Ivory Wayans Film Life, Inc., CEO, Jeff Friday, is pleased to announce Emmy Awardwinning producer/director Keenen Ivory Wayans as honoree at the landmark 15th Annual American Black Film Festival (ABFF). In recognition of his success in the film and television industry for nearly 25 years, Wayans will be honored with the Entertainment Icon Award at the festival’s culminating event, ABFF Honors, taking place on Saturday, July 9, at The Fillmore Miami Beach – Jackie Gleason Theater in Miami, FL. The Keenen Ivory Wayans’ award presentation will be the highlight of ABFF’s annual awards show, where the festival’s independent film awards are presented and artists are saluted for their achievement in cinema and passionate portrayal of stories about people of color. Past honorees have included Morgan Freeman, Lee Daniels, Spike Lee, Robert Townsend, Russell Simmons and Halle Berry. Originally noted for his infamous stand-up routines, Keenen Ivory Wayans was

the first from his famed comedic family to gain notoriety. After years of performing on the circuit, in 1987 Wayans produced and cowrote the hugely successful feature film Eddie Murphy Raw, catapulting his career to the next level. Having established himself as a talented entertainment visionary, Wayans followed up with a successful string of hits including the indie film Hollywood Shuffle and the classic parody of “blaxploitation” films, I’m Gonna Get You Sucka. Continuing his success and adding acting to his credits, Wayans broke new ground in television with the Emmy Award-winning Fox comedy series In Living Color. The series singlehandedly is credited with launching the careers of such A-list actors Jim Carrey, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Lopez and Damon Wayans. The show also introduced the television audience to brothers Shawn and Marlon Wayans. “Keenen Ivory Wayans is a trailblazer in the truest sense of the word,” states

ABFF founder Jeff Friday. “In fact, very few people in the industry have provided such a dynamic platform in cultivating such notable talent and revolutionizing comedy and comedic television. Beyond that, Wayans has proven to be an amazing mentor to his family by nurturing the careers of his siblings in the industry, and we are proud to bestow him with the festival’s highest distinction, especially on our anniversary year.” Wayans other film credits include The Five Heartbeats with Robert Townsend; A Low Down Dirty Shame; Most Wanted; The Glimmer Man; the hit “coming of age in the ‘hood” movie Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood, in which brothers Shawn and Marlon starred; the nearly $120 million worldwide grossing film, White Chicks; followed by Little Man and most recently, Dance Flick. In 2000, Wayans wrote and directed the international box office smash hit Scary Movie, a parody of slasher movies, for Dimension Films. The movie went on to break

several box office records including biggest opening for an R-rated movie and highest grossing film for an African American director. The film grossed over $300 million worldwide and led to a successful sequel, Scary Movie 2, which Wayans wrote, directed and produced. Currently Wayans is developing several features, including It Takes a Village, a story about a successful career woman who adopts a baby from a tiny island nation and unwittingly adopts the entire village. He is also executive producing and directing the television pilot Killville for MTV. HBO is the festival’s Founding and Premier Sponsor. Other sponsors to date include: Grey Goose and Team Sizzle Worldwide (Premier Sponsors); the GMC television network, Cadillac, American Airlines, Gold Peak Tea and Wells Fargo (Official Sponsors); The Nielsen Company, Nickelodeon, NBCUniversal, Codeblack Entertainment and Grab Networks (Supporting Sponsors); Miami Beach Visitor & Convention Authority and The Greater

Cadbury says sorry to Naomi Campbell Whitney Houston is not LONDON — Cadbury has apologized to Naomi Campbell for a controversial ad for its Dairy Milk Bliss chocolate in which the British supermodel is mentioned. The slogan for the ad includes the line, “Move over Naomi, there’s a new diva in town.” “It’s upsetting to be described as chocolate, not just for me but for all Black women and Black people,” Campbell told the British newspaper The Guardian. “I do not find any humor in this. It is insulting and hurtful.” Cadbury said in a statement issued to The Telegraph newspaper in England Friday it “understands that our latest advertising campaign for Cadbury Dairy Milk Bliss caused upset to Naomi Campbell and her family.” “Cadbury takes its responsibility to consumers very seriously indeed and we

battling emphysema

would never deliberately produce any marketing material we felt might cause offense to any section of society. It was not our intention that this campaign should offend Naomi, her family or anybody else and we are sincerely sorry that it has done so,” the company said. The Telegraph said the ads

have since been pulled and Campbell has accepted the company’s mea culpa. “The advertisement was in poor taste on a number of levels, not least in the way they likened me to their chocolate bar. It is also a shame that it took so long for Cadbury to offer this apology,” Campbell said in a statement.

A representative for Whitney Houston says that the singer is not battling a deadly bout of Emphysema. Houston was constantly out of breath and looked bloated during her stops overseas, which started rumors over her health. Rumors swirled that the singer/actress is also fighting a dangerous case of emphysema due to her history of smoking cigarettes and crack cocaine. The weight gain had been explained by her use of steroids to keep her throat health up as well as an increase in appetite. “She’s developed em-physema – and her doctors are warning her she’ll die a horrible death,” a source told the National Enquirer. Doctors allegedly told her to quit smoking immediately,

and her daughter Bobbi who just left rehab herself is reportedly trying to help her mother fight the sickness. But Houston’s publicist Kristen Foster has spoken out to denounce the reports, branding them “completely untrue”.

Hacker attacks threaten to dampen cloud computing’s prospects By CLARE JIM and LEE CHYEN YEE TAIPEI — The recent high-profile hacking of Google’s Gmail service and Sony’s Playstation gaming network is threatening to slow the take-off of the next big thing in the computing space - the cloud. Computer companies will need to collaborate to work on addressing security issues to boost confidence in cloud computing, where data and software is stored on servers and accessed via the Internet, especially in the corporate space where the potential market size is much larger than the retail space. “Many enterprises

have reservations about the security of cloud computing because of the multi-tenant architecture and the fact that cloud providers are ‘big targets’,” said Steve Hodgkinson, IT research director at UK-based research firm Ovum. “The reality, however, is that the leading cloud providers have a very strong incentive to invest in the latest security technologies and processes — and will arguably be more secure than most enterprises themselves.” Security is a hot issue in the computing world. Hackers broke into Sony’s networks and accessed the information of more than 1 million customers, the latest of several security breaches.

The breaches were the latest attacks on high-profile firms, including defense contractor Lockheed Martin and Google, which pointed the blame at China. Concerns over security could slow the growth of the market for cloud computing, which is expected to reach $3.2 billion this year in Asia alone from $1.87 billion last year, while the global market could reach $55 billion in 2014, according to estimates by technology research firm IDC. Analysts and industry experts believe hardware-based security provides a higher level of protection than software with encryption added to data in the servers. Chipmakers are working to

build more authentication into the silicon. “We have to do a combination of mitigating things like building more and more security in the infrastructure,” said Boyd Davis, a vice president at chipmaker Intel Corp, speaking at the Computex computer show in Taipei this week. Intel has been working since the end of last year with software and computer vendors including Fujitsu, Huawei, Cisco, Dell, IBM and Hewlett Packard on a crossindustry initiative aimed at making cloud infrastructure more simplified, secure and efficient. But one of the problems cloud faces is that it is a fragmented market where many ven-

dors provide different security solutions based on their own standards. Intel’s rival ARM and Advanced Micro Devices are also in the process of embedding higher security in their chips and processors, but working with different partners. If there was an open standard to follow, it would help the industry to build a much secure cloud system, according to AMD. “Because if you don’t have an open standard, you might do security in a certain way and I might do something that’s not compatible, and the applications can’t talk to each other,” said Manju Hegde, AMD’s corporate vice president. He noted that Apple,

set to unveil next week a cloud-based service called iCloud, has its own security because it is a vertical company, but the rest the industry should have an open standard. Intel’s Davis agreed that the lack of an open standard and interoperability are limits to the cloud, but added that the industry would have to strike a balance in an open standard with security or else it would make hackers’ work easier. “Because the definition of secure is tightly held. That’s one of the dilemmas we’ll face. We’d like to provide more capability to control the workload running on our processors, but the more we do that the more we invite malicious codes in.”

Sharp eyes profit from small displays, books charge on TVs By ISABEL REYNOLDS TOKYO — Japan’s Sharp Corp forecast an unexpected jump in operating profit as demand for smartphones and tablets boosts sales, but said a temporary production halt at two TV panel plants earlier this year would force it to book an extraordinary charge. For the year ending March 2012, Sharp expects operating profit to rise 23 percent to 97 billion yen ($1.2 billion), substantially above the consensus of 56.8 billion yen, based on the average of 30 forecasts by analysts polled by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. As part of a strategy aimed at tapping the burgeoning tablet market, Sharp said it will switch most production at its Kameyama liquidcrystal display (LCD) panel plant in western Japan to smaller panels used in popular devices such as Apple’s iPad. Once a mainstay of the company’s LCD TV business, the plant is increasingly seen as redundant as competition heats up from rivals including LG

Electronics and Samsung Electronics. Sharp says it has a technical advantage in manufacturing larger panels of 60 inches or more, as well as the small panels used in mobile devices, but will scale back production in the commoditized middle sector. “South Korean companies are losing money in the 30 to 40 inch market,” Sharp President Mikio Katayama told reporters in Tokyo on Friday. “Sharp is not going to do battle in a market where we lose money even if we win.” Analysts expect global tablet sales to soar to more than 50 million units in 2011. Apple boasts 80 percent of the market, but it is attracting many new entrants. Separately, Sharp said on Friday it would source midsized panels from cost-competitive alliance partners in China and Taiwan. Katayama told reporters talks about a plan for Sharp to build its own cutting-edge TV panel plant in China had stalled. The Nikkei business daily reported that Sharp is in talks with Taiwan’s Hon Hai Precision to jointly procure

parts for LCD production. Katayama declined to confirm the report, but said Sharp would work with overseas companies to cut costs. Sharp was forced to suspend output at two TV panel plants in April, after the March 11 earthquake triggered a plunge in demand and shortages of a gas used in the production process. The company said on

Friday it would take a 27 billion yen extraordinary charge in the April-June quarter following the stoppages. For the current business year, Sharp expects to sell 15 million flat-screen TVs compared with 14.8 million the previous year. Like many of its rivals, Sharp delayed its annual earnings guidance as it weighed the

impact of the disaster on consumption and on its supply chain. “We know we cannot let our guard down, given the tough situation that is expected to continue following the earthquake and the nuclear crisis,” Katayama told reporters. “But there are also positive signs, such as the growing demand for smartphones, increasing interest in energy-sav-

ing devices such as LED lights and an increase in demand for solar panels.” Sharp’s shares jumped immediately after the earnings forecast announcement, trading up as much as 4.2 percent to a nearly two-month high of 768 yen, but fell back to close up 0.1 percent at 738 yen in a broader market down 0.7 percent fall.

Boeing to cut 510 jobs as shuttle program winds down Boeing Co. will lay off about 510 employees in its Space Exploration division as the United States’ space shuttle program draws to a close. There will no material impact on the company as a result of the job cuts, a spokesman for Boeing’s Space Exploration division told Reuters. The last workday for workers is scheduled to be August 5, pending completion of the final shuttle mission, the company said in a statement. The United States is retiring its three-ship fleet due to high operating costs and to free up funds to develop new spacecraft that can trav-

el beyond the space station’s 220-mile-high (346-km-high) orbit. Last week, space shuttle Endeavour

touched down at its Florida home base, ending the next-to-last mission in the space shuttle program.

Shuttle Atlantis is slated to launch on July 8 on NASA’s final planned shuttle mission.

Cooling employment casts shadow on recovery By LUCIA MUTIKANI WASHINGTON — The economy may be in for a long period of soft growth after employers hired the fewest number of workers in eight months in May and the rate unemployment rose to 9.1 percent. Nonfarm payrolls increased 54,000 last month, the Labor Department said on Friday, just over a third of what economists had expected. However, analysts saw little chance the economy would slide back into recession, given that temporary factors like high gasoline prices and supply chain disruptions from the earthquake in Japan were constraining growth. “The recovery has not been aborted. The economy is not falling into a double-dip,” said Sung Won Sohn, an economics professor at California State University in the Channel Islands. “This weakness, however, is a warning shot across the bow of the economy.” The broadly weak report confirmed a loss of economic momentum already flagged by other data from consumer spending to manufacturing. The department said it found “no clear impact” on the jobs figures from the tornadoes and flooding in the Midwest and South. The sharp slowdown in job creation accompanied signs of softening growth overseas and was troubling news for President

Job seekers wait to meet potential employers at a career fair at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Barack Obama, whose chances of re-election next year could hinge on the health of the economy. In remarks to auto workers in Ohio, Obama did not directly address the jobs figures, although he acknowledged the economy’s woes and said it would take a while to mend. “There are still some headwinds that are coming at us. Lately it’s been high gas prices, then you have the economic disruptions following the tragedy in Japan,” Obama said. “There are always going to be bumps on the road to recovery. We are going to pass though some rough terrain.” High gasoline costs hurt consumer spending in the first quarter, when economic growth was held to a 1.8 percent annual pace after

expanding at a 3.1 percent rate at the end of 2010. Wal-Mart Chief Executive Mike Duke on Friday said the “paycheck cycle,” where people stock up around payday and then spend less as the month progresses and cash runs out, is more pronounced than it has ever been. The employment data lent more fuel to talk about the need for the Federal Reserve to extend its asset purchasing program when it expires this month, but officials at the central bank have set a high bar for any further easing of monetary policy. With the Obama administration and lawmakers discussing how best to trim U.S. spending as they try strike a deal on raising the debt limit, the economy could be left to its own devices.

Ratings agency Moody’s on Thursday said it would consider cutting the nation’s credit rating if progress is not made by mid-July in talks to raise the $14.3 trillion debt ceiling. “One look at the jobs report should show the White House it’s time to get serious about cutting spending and healing our ailing economy,” said U.S. House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner. U.S. stocks fell to mark a fifth straight week of losses, while the dollar sank to a record low against the Swiss franc. Treasury debt prices and interest rate futures rose, signaling that traders believe mounting signs of economic weakness will lead the U.S. central bank to keep interest rates pressed to zero for a prolonged stretch.

A Reuters survey on Friday predicted the Fed would leave interest rates on hold this year and most economists did not see an increase before the second half of 2012. “It pushes back expectations to when the Fed can start to renormalize policy, probably well into 2012 before we see an increase in the fed rate,” said funds Robert Dye, senior at PNC economist Financial Services in Pittsburgh. Views the economy was not falling off the cliff were supported by a separate report showing growth in the country’s services sector picked up in May. The Institute for Supply Management’s services sector index rose to 54.6 last month from 52.8 in April, with gains in employment and new orders. The private sector, which has shouldered the burden of job creation, added just 83,000 jobs in May, the fewest since last June, while government payrolls fell for a seventh straight month. About 39,000 fewer jobs were created in March and April than previously estimated. Payrolls in May had been expected to rise 150,000, with private employment gaining 175,000. The economy has regained only a fraction of the more than 8 million jobs lost during the recession. Economists say payrolls growth above 300,000 a month is needed to make significant progress in shrinking the pool of 13.9 million

New York neighborhood first to go wireless A waterfront area in the New York borough of Brooklyn has become the first city neighborhood to feature free wireless service on streets and in parks and plazas. DUMBO, short for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, already has a reputation for innovative projects.

Several formerly abandoned and neglected structures there have been transformed into eco-friendly offices and apartment buildings. “We are encouraging people to step out of their offices and homes and engage with one another and the neighborhood in new and different ways,” said

Alexandria Sica, the executive director of the DUMBO Business Improvement District (BIB). “Creativity can literally flow into the streets. Businesses will be born in Brooklyn Bridge Park.” DUMBO went wireless through a joint project by BID, NYCwire-

less, a nonprofit organization which helps install free wireless service, and property broker Two Trees Management Co. Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz said that he had high hopes for the area. “One day, mark my words, this area will

rival Silicon Valley in terms of high tech ingenuity,” he said in a statement. “It’s only natural that DUMBO is the first neighborhood to be truly connected 24/7.” The DUMBO neighborhood is well known to tourists and locals who visit the neighborhood after crossing the Manhattan Bridge.

unemployed Americans. The rise in the rate unemployment from 9.0 percent in April reflected discouraged workers re-entering the labor market after a pick-up in hiring in April. “There was very little in the report that suggested the household sector has any reason to become more confident in the recovery and that in itself does not augur well for a future acceleration,” said Patrick O’Keefe, head of economic research at J.H. Cohn in Roseland, New Jersey. Employment in the private services sector rose by a modest 80,000, a sharp slowdown from April’s 213,000 increase. Payrolls in May were held back by declines in leisure and hospitality, and retail. Factory employment contracted for the first time since October, while construction rose for a fourth straight month. The report showed the average workweek steady at 34.4 hours, and few signs of wage inflation with average hourly earnings rising 6 cents. !

Winless Tiger still tops Forbes richest athlete list Tiger Woods, who has fallen to 13th in the world golf rankings without a title since November of 2009, remains atop the list of the world’s highest-paid athletes according to Forbes magazine. While Woods has seen his annual earnings plunge $50 million over the past two years, he remained atop the Top 50 list with $75 million over the past 12 months to outpace NBA star Kobe Bryant, the runner-up at $53 million. The list considers not only player salaries but all endorsement and sponsor income, with Woods having become the first career $1 billion sports pitchman before his epic fall from grace when a sordid sex scandal was revealed in 2009. Woods lost such sponsors as Accenture, AT&T, Gillette and PepsiCo but retained Nike and EA Sports, who together bring more than half of Woods’ income over the 12-month period ending May 1.

The golf videogame bearing his name was a big seller this year as it was the first of its kind to feature Augusta National Golf Club, home of the Masters. Woods was the catalyst for a Nike Golf division that had sales of $638 million last year while the 14th edition of the Woods videogame had record first-week sales of 225,000 units. The drop by Woods and lack of a fight by boxer Floyd Mayweather, last year’s No. 2 on the list with $65 million, led a drop of 11 percent by the combined list to a total income of $1.4 billion. Another factor was an NFL lockout that kept new deals from being signed last March and April for American football star free agents. Tom Brady of the New England Patriots led three gridiron stars on the 2011 list at $31 million. Bryant tops 15 basketball players on the Forbes list, with his $24.8 million salary topping any NBA rival by $4 million.

LeBron James, playing in the NBA Finals with the Miami Heat, ranks third on the list with $48 million. The only woman on the list was Maria Sharapova, who was ranked 29th with $24.2 million, in large part thanks to apparel deals with Nike and Cole Haan shoes. Swiss tennis star Roger Federer was fourth on the list at $47 million followed in order by US golfer Phil Mickelson at $46.5 million, English footballer David Beckham at $40 million, football’s Cristiano Ronaldo at $38 million, US baseball star Alex Rodriguez at $35 million, German auto racer Michael Schumacher at $34 million and football’s Lionel Messi at $32.3 million. At the bottom of the list of the richest were two NBA stars, Spanish playmaker Pau Gasol of the Lakers in 49th at $18.9 million, a mere $100,000 above American Michael Redd of the Milwaukee Bucks. The minimum to make last year’s list was $21 million.

Report: Nine U.S. baseball clubs in debt trouble LOS ANGELES — Nine of Major League Baseball’s 30 clubs are not in compliance with debt rules despite the elite level of the American pastime making $7 billion in annual revenues, the Los Angeles Times reported. The newspaper, citing unnamed sources familiar with a confidential briefing at an owners meeting in May, reported Friday that nearly one-third of the clubs are overleveraged, including the New York Mets and Los Angeles Dodgers.

Other clubs named as outside of debt rules in the report were the Baltimore Orioles, Washington Nationals, Chicago Cubs, Detroit Tigers, Texas Rangers, Philadelphia Phillies and Florida Marlins. Rob Manfred, Major League Baseball’s executive vice president of labor relations, would not confirm details of the report to the Times but said there was no great worry about the financial state of the sport. “We are not concerned

about the overall economic condition of the industry,” Manfred told the newspaper. “To take a snapshot of the number of non-compliant clubs at a point in time can be very misleading. With one or two exceptions, we see how teams are going to be compliant again in the short term, so we’re not worried about them.” Debt service rules were put in place in negotiations with the players union in 2002 after club debt leaped from $600 million in 1993,

the year before a labor dispute wiped out a conclusion to the season, to $3.1 billion in 2001. A team’s debt limit is typically 10 times its annual earnings, although Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig has broad latitude to enforce the regulations. The Dodgers are being operated by a Selig-appointed trustee while club owner Frank McCourt and his wife negotiate a divorce settlement while the Mets claim

Gay runs year’s fastest 100 meters in tune-up meeting MIAMI — Record holder Tyson Gay ran the year’s fastest 100 meters when he clocked 9.79 seconds in a tune-up meeting at Clermont, Florida. The performance came hours before Jamaican train-

ing mate Steve Mullings sprinted 9.80 at the Prefontaine Classic Diamond League meeting in Eugene, Oregon. Mullings held the yearly lead of 9.89 before Saturday’s performances.

Gay’s time came in a preliminary race at the NTC Sprint Series. He did not compete in the final, according to official results. Both his and Mullings’ performances were with allowable winds.

Jamaican Usain Bolt holds the world record of 9.58 seconds. Gay’s U.S. record is 9.69. The American is scheduled to make his Diamond League debut with another 100 meters at the New York Grand Prix Saturday.

$427 million in debts and could lose $70 million this year after owners were hit hard in the Bernie Madoff ponzi scheme scandal that rocked Wall Street. The Rangers were in bankruptcy until former star pitcher Nolan Ryan led a group of investors to rescue the club, which reached the World Series last year for the first time in its history. “You’ve got to be thinking, with two of the premier franchises in trouble and a major-market team that has just come out of bankruptcy, what else is out there?” a sports investment banker who wished his identity kept hidden told the Times. One National League club chief executive who was not further identified by the Times said Major League Baseball has worked to ease the debt woes on clubs before they extend to the league itself. “I think we’re healthy,” the executive told the newspaper. “The banks see it. The banks get it. We’re still thriving.”

Shaq wise-cracks his way into retirement Shaquille O’Neal formally announced his retirement on Friday, ending a professional NBA career that spanned nearly two decades. One of the most successful and recognizable players in the sport, O’Neal had revealed his intentions to quit on Twitter two days ago. The giant center made it an official with a news conference at his expansive Florida home broadcast live on U.S. television. “I never thought this day would come,” the 39-year-old O’Neal said. “Father Time has finally caught up with Shaquille O’Neal.” During his career, O’Neal played for six NBA teams: the Orlando Magic, Los Angeles Lakers, Miami Heat, Phoenix Suns, Cleveland Cavaliers and finally the Boston Celtics. He won four NBA Championships, three with the Lakers and one with Miami, scored 28,596 points, the fifth highest total ever, and won a string of personal awards, including the NBA’s MVP. He averaged 23.7 points and 10.9 rebounds a game, was named to 15 All-Star

Shaquille O’Neal, right, and girlfriend Nicole Alexander leave a news conference after he announced his retirement from NBA basketball at his home in Windermere, Fla. teams and was a member of the United States team that won the gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. “Even though I didn’t reach my full potential I can look at my mother and father and say, ‘We made it’.

A poor family from Newark, New Jersey, from the projects, we made it,” he said. Injuries and the ravages of a physical sport inevitably caught up with the seven feet one inches tall, 325 pound (147 kilograms) O’Neal, forc-

ing him to hang up his size 23 sneakers. But O’Neal’s achievements on court were only part of the reason for his mass appeal. His sharp mind and his infectious smile won him as many admirers as any of his monster slam dunks. O’Neal has university degrees in arts and business and said he has less than a year to go to complete a doctorate. He has successfully transcended into the world of entertainment, releasing four rap albums, appearing in movies and hosting his own reality television shows. “I’m the luckiest guy in the world,” he said. It was no surprise that O’Neal, who gave himself a range of nicknames, including ‘The Big Daddy’, ‘Superman’ and ‘The Diesel’, packed his retirement conference with wisecracks and selfmockery. “I’m going to miss the competition, the camaraderie, the friendship, the fans, joking with the media,” O’Neal said. “And I’m really going to miss the free throws.” A notoriously poor free-

throw shooter who averaged 52.7 per cent over his career, O’Neal laughed at how his father told him he could have ended up as the highest point scorer of all time if he hadn’t missed so many free throws. In between the gags, there were some moments of reflection. He spoke warmly about some of the people who had helped him throughout his career and said he had resolved his rift with his former Lakers team mate Kobe Bryant before he was traded to Miami. “A lot of people on the outside looking in would say Kobe and I had problems,” O’Neal said. “But I was task-driven and the task was to win championships. I pushed Kobe’s buttons. Kobe pushed my buttons. We were able to win three out of four. “A lot of people think we hate each other, but I see Kobe and his beautiful wife and his beautiful daughters all the time and I go to the babies and say hi, it’s Uncle Shaq and they say hi, we kiss them on the cheek. It’s all about the task.”

Charles Oakley: Assault led to back pain CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charles Oakley, one of the NBA’s all-time tough guys, may not return to the Charlotte Bobcats’ bench next season because of a painful back condition he says was caused during an assault last year in Las Vegas. Oakley, who was in his first season as an assistant coach, had to be carried from the bench before a game in San Antonio on March 19. He missed Charlotte’s final 13 games with a sciatic nerve problem. The 47-year-old Oakley, still moving gingerly, attended Charlotte’s workout of draft prospects Saturday. As he contemplates surgery, Oakley said he told general manager Rod Higgins to consider replacing him on coach Paul Silas’ staff. Silas said Saturday there’s no timetable for making a decision. “I want to do what’s best for the team, always,” Oak-

ley said. “We’ll have to see what happens and if I’m not back, they’ll have someone just as good as me or better.” Oakley has sued the Aria hotel-casino, claiming he was beaten by security guards in May 2010. Oakley is convinced the incident led to his current condition. “I wasn’t going to sue, but they just did too much damage to me,” said Oakley, who filed the suit last month. “It just handicapped me for a period of time and they think it was a joke. I don’t want to go into too much detail, but I never tried to assault them. They tried to assault me. “I’m not a troublemaker. People say, ‘You got into a lot of incidents.’ Yeah, but it was on the basketball floor.” The complaint contends five officers wrestled the 6foot-9 Oakley to the ground and punched and handcuffed him after a verbal dispute over whether Oakley could return to a VIP pool area. It

said Oakley was taken to the hospital with injuries to his neck, back, head and wrist. Oakley said Saturday two slipped disks suffered in the incident led to the sciatic nerve condition. “It’s like having a nail in your tire. You can only go so far and then the nail keeps going in, going in,” Oakley said. “Once it reaches the peak, the hole gets bigger and all the air comes out of your tire. The damage to my disk — it just couldn’t take no more.” The complaint alleges negligence, assault, assault with excessive force, battery, false imprisonment and defamation. It seeks unspecified general, special and punitive damages. MGM Resorts International, which owns the resort, has declined to comment since the suit was filed. Oakley, a former teammate of Bobcats owner Michael Jordan in Chicago,

was known as a relentless rebounder and collector of hard fouls in his 18-year career. Oakley, who ranks 20th in NBA history with 12,205 boards, also played for New York, Toronto, Washington and Houston. Oakley was proud to prove he could coach. He routinely worked out with players in practice and was credited with helping Bobcats center Kwame Brown’s development late last season. Then Oakley’s body gave out in a jarring scene in San Antonio. “I hate to go out like that,” Oakley said. “It looks like somebody got knocked out of the ring and couldn’t get back on his feet. But I’m back walking and hopefully getting my back back together and back to 100 percent.” Oakley said he’s moving better and recently started riding a bike. He hopes to avoid surgery. “I just want to get back to

normal,” Oakley said. “It’s draining sometimes, but you’ve got to stay strong. ... Hopefully, I’ll be back coaching someday. If not, I’ve got to continue living.”

Jacobs: ‘No chance’ Plax joins Giants By OHM YOUNGMISUK Wide receiver Plaxico Burress becomes a free man today when he is released from prison. And according to good friend and former teammate Brandon Jacobs, Burress will not be returning to the New York Giants once the lockout ends. “There is no chance Plaxico Burress is a New York Giant after he comes home,” Jacobs said while attending teammate Justin Tuck’s celebrity billiards event in Manhattan. “He isn’t coming to the Giants,” Jacobs added. “He’s got options. I would love for him to be a part of the Giants. I don’t think that is even on his plate.” Jacobs has placed the Philadelphia Eagles as the leading candidate to land Burress once football resumes because of Burress’ friendship with Michael Vick and the fact that the Eagles are loaded with talent offensively. Both Vick and Burress grew up in the Virginia

Beach area. “I would hate to see him go to where I think he is going to go, that is from talking to him,” Jacobs said of the Eagles when asked if he was talking about Philadelphia. “It is pretty tough to deal with all those different combinations. Plax is a Virginia guy, Vick is a Virginia guy. They went through sort of the same things and they got a lot of dynamic players down there. It wouldn’t be a bad thing, he thinks, to go down there. He wants to win.” Jacobs is one of Burress’ best friends and has remained in constant contact with the wide receiver, who accidentally shot himself in the thigh in November 2008. Burress pleaded guilty to attempted criminal possession of a weapon. He’s eligible for time off for good behavior, so his prison time will end Monday after serving 21 months of his twoyear sentence. Jacobs said he is “so sure” of Burress’ thinking “because I talk to him once a week.” “He doesn’t think there is anything wrong with the organization,” Jacobs said of

the Giants. “He just wants a new start.” “I’m way excited for (him),” Jacobs added of Burress’ pending release. “He will get his opportunity. I am super happy for him and his family. His kids were over at my house a couple days ago. His wife seems super happy. It is a great thing for him to be coming home.” Tuck, who hosted a celebrity billiards tournament to raise money for his R.U.S.H. for Literacy foundation, is one of several Giants who want Burress back. When asked if he will talk to general manager Jerry Reese and ownership about a Burress reunion once the lockout ends, Tuck said he will continue what he started before the lockout began. “I’m already campaigning,” Tuck said prior to Jacobs’ comments about Burress being unlikely to return to the Giants. “I was campaigning before the lockout started. I will say this much, go back and see what our record was when he shot himself and how devastating our offense was. You had to take a safety out of the box (against him). With our Oline and our running game,

that opens up a lot of stuff. I’m excited. I hope we can get No. 17 back to Giants Stadium.” The Giants were 10-1 in 2008 before Burress shot himself that Nov. 28. The Giants made the postseason that year but have not been back since. Tuck thinks the Giants and Burress make a lot of sense in 2011. “I would think it is somewhere he would be comfortable, he knows everybody there and he knows the system,” said Tuck, who also is friends with Burress. “He had great chemistry with Eli (Manning) and he has a lot of friends on this team and a team that wants him here. I am sure there are going to be a lot of teams that will want him.” “I can’t speak for Plaxico,” Tuck added. “He has a mind of his own and he knows what he wants to do. Coming from the captain of the New York Giants, I would love to have Plaxico back here in Giants blue.” Jacobs would love to convince Burress to return to the Giants but the running back mentioned his own uncertain future. Jacobs is

under contract for two more seasons and will earn $4.65 million in 2011 and $4.9 million in 2012. The Giants also want to resign starting running back Ahmad Bradshaw, who will either be a restricted or unrestricted free agent. Keeping both running backs could be difficult if the Giants have to give Bradshaw a big contract. “If I knew where I would be next year, if I knew for a fact that I would be around — no one knows anything now — I would be trying to talk (Burress) into it,” said Jacobs, who wants to return to the Giants and play with Bradshaw and Burress. “He wants to explore his options.”

Judge urges NFL and players to reach agreement The NFL dispute was back before the courts on Friday with lawyers for both sides presenting their case before the U.S. 8th Circuit Court of Appeals. The players once again asked the court for an injunction to lift the threemonth lockout imposed by the league while the league and owners argued that the decertification of the players’ union should be ruled invalid and the case against the NFL dropped. Kermit Bye, one of three judges presiding in the hearing, said the judges would make their ruling in “due course” and urged both sides to sort out their differences themselves. “We wouldn’t be all that hurt if you go out and settle that case,” Bye said after the hearing. “We will keep with our business, and if that ends up with a decision, it’s probably something both sides aren’t

going to like, but at least it will be a decision.” Any ruling by the court is unlikely to resolve the dispute but will provide leverage when they sit down to renegotiate the collective bargaining agreement. The players held the upper hand after the first court, before a federal judge, but the league suc-

cessfully lodged an appeal that was heard by the same three judges adjudicating on the latest legal wrangling. The feuding sides have also held a series of courtordered mediation talks but have declined to comment on them because of a confidentiality agreement, although the pervading

mood is that talks are slowly going forward. The players have been locked out by the owners for nearly 12 weeks after talks on a new collective bargaining agreement broke off and the players union decertified. Nine of the players then filed an antitrust lawsuit against the NFL. The dispute threatens the

prospects of the 2011 season, due to start in September, starting on time, and could cost the sport about $1 billion in lost revenues. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell last week warned that time was running out although he said the league intended to play a complete 2011 season and hold the Super Bowl in Indianapolis.

Isiah Thomas not interested in Knicks By IAN O’CONNOR Isiah Thomas no longer harbors visions of replacing Donnie Walsh in New York. Seven months after saying that he thought of replacing former New York Knicks president and general manager Walsh “every single day of the week,” Thomas said Friday that he is no longer interested in the job Walsh just

vacated, the same job Isiah himself once held. “I have no desire to return as president of the Knicks,” said Thomas, now the head coach of Florida International University. “I’m not a candidate to replace Donnie. I like the job I have right now, and the toll that the (Knicks) job took on me, my wife, and my kids, I don’t want to go through that again.” Madison Square Garden

chairman Jim Dolan tried to bring back Thomas as general manager last year before Walsh successfully lobbied against the move. When Dolan hired Thomas as a consultant instead, NBA commissioner David Stern voided the deal because he viewed Thomas’ role as a college coach as a conflict of interest. On a Friday conference call with reporters, Walsh called constant news media reports

of Isiah’s influence and relationship with Dolan “an annoyance.” Would Thomas consider leaving Florida International in Walsh’s wake to accept a reduced role as a consultant or scout? “I’ll only say that Jim and I are great friends,” Thomas said, “and I will always try to help him help the Knicks. If he wants me to help, I’ll be there for him.”
