Anderson and Eliza Bonner Family The amazing accomplishments of Anderson Bonner (c. 1835 – c. 1920) as a farmer and owner of extensive and holdings north of Dallas along White Rock Creek and Cottonwood Branch, have not been fully credited. A former slave, Anderson Bonner signed his name with an X on deeds for hundreds of acres of land. He purchased the property with funds earned from his farm products and houses he leased to sharecroppers. The fact that all of his business transactions were handled with legal consultation and documentation tends to verify his brilliant business sense and knowledge of measures needed to secure his massive holdings. Anderson Bonner married Eliza and nine known children were borne to that union; Newton, William, Ed, John, Andy, Mary, Martha, Charlie and Nash. Eliza was originally for Arkansas. The children helped work the farm. He grew cotton, corn, and fruit, along with other types of crops. Eliza died as the result of a lamp explosion and fire in their home. Those who saw the explosion said she placed her hands over her head when the lamp blew up in her face and caught fire. Later on Anderson Bonner married Lacinda from Waxahachie, Texas. The First school for black children in the North Dallas area was the Vickery and Hillcrest School. It was renamed to the Anderson Bonner School. The school was closed by the Richardson ISD when Hamilton Park School opened in 1955. Prior to World War II many black groups held picnics on a section of the farm on Forest Lane, including the property where Medical City Hospital is now located (Forest Lane and Central Expressway). Central Expressway was cut through the farm. The City of Dallas officially named the park west of Medical City Hospital, Anderson Bonner Park. The park runs along White Rock Creek and is complete with bicycle trails and recreation areas. This area was also a part of the original farm.

According to members of the family, it is not known how Anderson Bonner, his brother, Louis and sister, Caroline, came from Alabama to the farm area North of White Rock Creek. There are indications that they may have lived in Arkansas for a while. Also, it was reported that at some point Anderson was given to a white family as a wedding gift.

Parental participation enhances academic success By Dallas ISD Trustee Lew Blackburn District 5

Parental participation in the educational process is one way to enhance student academic success. While participation in education can take many forms, the fall and spring parent conferences are a proven way to build positive home-school relationships. Plan to attend. The conferences are a perfect opportunity to get to know your child’s teachers, especially for parents whose work and other commitments make it difficult to help in the classroom, meet with teachers during the day, or volunteer on a regular basis. Whatever the student’s age or grade, parent-teacher conferences establish two-way communication and provide parents the chance to share information with teachers about their child’s attitudes related to school, homework and classmates. Get in the know. This spring’s parent conferences will take place on Thursday, Jan. 31, for elementary schools, Monday,

Feb. 4, for high schools, and Tuesday, Feb. 5, for middle schools. During conferences, parents should feel free to discuss their child’s classroom behavior, homework and the availability of tutoring. Mark your calendar. Beyond the grades reflected on the report card, parents also can discuss with teachers areas where students are struggling and need help and get tips on ways to challenge and motivate their children to perform even better. It’s good to know. It’s also helpful to develop a plan of action to support the student’s learning. This might take the form of an agreement in which parents commit to what they will require at home and the teacher outlines projects, deadlines and lessons that will be covered at school. Support learning from the home. Teachers want students to succeed as much as parents do. As a team, teachers and parents can ensure that students are learning what’s required at each grade level and work together to make adjustments when needed. This kind of cooperation is even more crucial as students prepare to take the 2013 STAAR exams in the next few months. Many schools provide before- and after-school

tutoring, especially in the weeks leading up to the tests. Ask your children’s teacher if tutoring is available at the school or if other resources are available to help students to prepare outside of school hours. Practicing reading and writing at home every day, even if only for 20 minutes, can significantly enhance a student’s academic performance. While parent conferences provide an ideal environment to meet and collaborate with teachers, they are not the only time parents can discuss their children’s academic performance. If meeting face to face is difficult, ask teachers for other ways to stay in touch for updates on the student’s progress. Regular communication between parents and teachers can help address issues sooner and keep students on track toward college readiness and high academic achievement. Make it happen. Parents are encouraged to take advantage of every opportunity to be involved in their children’s education, to learn more about what takes place in the classroom and to partner with teachers to ensure student success. African American History Month has more significant meaning By Barbara Mallory Caraway

M o n d a y, January 20, 2013, the Nation and World watched as President Barack Obama was sworn into his second term as President of the United States. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts administered the oath while his wife Michelle and daughters Malia and Sasha witnessed. The constitution requires that the swearing-in take place by January 20th. Public inaugural ceremonies took place on Monday, January 21st. The significance of Barack Obama’s inauguration on January 21st was significant to historians and observers. The President took the oath with his hand on the personal Bibles of President Abraham Lincoln and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The celebration of the re-election of America’s first African American President was also the official birthday celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (King was born on January 15, 1929). Another milestone will happen later this year on August 28th when we will mark the 50th year anniversary of the 1963 “March on Washington”. This march was a historic turning point for the modern day civil rights era. More than 250,000 people attended the demonstration in Washington, D.C. to demand that the federal government stop laws that allowed the unfair treatment of Negroes. On this day Dr. King delivered his famous “I Have a Dream Speech”. In this speech, Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke of an America where everyone was equal. He dreamed of an America where his children “will not be judged not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character”. President Obama will continue to work his second term on fulfilling his campaign promises but more intently in building his legacy. The inaugural speech outlined a bold agenda: a continued push for immigration reform. Creating a pathway to citizenship for the more than 11 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S. He pushed for

education reform that includes using more technologies for learning and training. Strengthening the middle class requires a reduction in the cost of healthcare as well as creating more 21st Century demanded jobs. President Obama called on all of us to help protect the environment by using more solar and sustainable energies to reduce greenhouse emission. The President also used this opportunity to reiterate his support for equal rights for all individuals regardless of their sexual orientation. When President Obama exits office in 2016 he will end his public service as an elected official. That reminder was not lost to him on Inauguration Day. As he and guest were leaving the platform, he took time to savor the moment. You could hear him through the microphones ask the guest to pause giving him enough time to take one last look at the nearly 1 million people who had come to witness this moment in history. He turned around and scanned out over the massive crowd cheering, waving the American Flag, showing their appreciation and love for him. Showing their thanks for what they believe he has done for America and what he plans to do in the future. He seemingly sighed and showed a hint of melancholy. I smiled too, with appreciation of the fact that we live in a country of laws with a constitution that dictates that “all men are created equal endowed by their creator with certain inalienable Rights among them life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”. I am happy that we live in a democracy that constantly evolves to be inclusive. We live in a country where hard work and sometimes by chance we can be succeed. But more importantly, I thank God for my ancestors and forbearers who unselfishly fought for the rights for all….. Slaves and freed men learned and unlearned. They shed tears and blood and fought against unbearable odds for a future that they certainly would not benefit them. A man had a dream and there’s proof that dreams do come true. Especially for a man of African descent named Barack Hussein Obama. Barbara Mallory Caraway is a former member of Texas House of Representatives and former member of the Dallas City Council. Dallas will once again turn its attention to those who have faithfully and selflessly served the community when the 38th Annual Elite News Awards Night Ceremony will take place on Friday February 22nd at Calvary Philadelphia Missionary Baptist Church located at 4703 Sunnyvale Road in Oak Cliff. The purpose of this event is to acknowledge the many contributions that people have made and continue to make to Dallas community, said Elite News publisher, William “Bill” Blair, who started the awards nearly four decades ago when Dr. H.I. Holland and Mike Shapiro were honorees. “To often people are not given their proper due until they are no longer with us” said Blair. “This tribute acknowledges people while they are still among the living. We believe in giving people their flowers while they are still breathing.” Blair said that this year’s award program will be especially significant because the Jordan Randle Blair will be given in memory of his son who passed away last year after battling a serious illness for a number of years. “This will be the 2nd time in 38 years that my son, Randy, will not be with us,” Blair said. But he will live through this award that is being named for him and that will be given to someone who has made major contributions to the life of Dallas. A number of Dallas citizens, men and women will be honored at this event. The master of ceremonies will be Cheryl Smith known writer / journalist. “I am delighted to be one of this years honorees” said Pastor Corey Toney of the New Leaf Family Church in Pleasant Grove. “It is a wonderful tribute and I am honored to have been selected to receive this award.” Other recipients include members of the business community, the clergy, educators, journalists and lawyers. Others who have been saluted in previous years have been former mayors Ron Kirk and Tom Leppert. Tom Brady “Life is strange with it’s twist and turns, as everyone of us sometimes learn. “And many a failure turns about when he may have won had he stuck it out”.!!!! In this years Super Bowl one of the big stories is how the coach for the 49ers switched quarterbacks. Many sports fans may remember that something real similar happened in New England with Drew Bledsoe and Tom Brady. Allow me to explain. Brady was selected with the #199 pick in the sixth round of the 2000 NFL Draft. Brady started his rookie season as the fourth

string quarterback, behind started Drew Bledsoe and back ups John Friesz and Michael Bishop. By the end of Brady’s rookie season he was #2 on the depth Bledsoe. In his second season this is were the story begins. Drew Bledsoe suffered internal bleeding after a hit from Jets linebacker Mo Lewis. Bledsoe returned to the game for the next series, but was replaced by Brady for the Patriots’ final series of the game. the Jets won the game10-3 and the Patriots fell to 0-2 on the season. Brady was named the started for the next game against the Indianapolis Colts. It was in the fifth game of this season that Brady began to find his stride. Trailing the San Diego Chargers 26-16 in the fourth quarter, Brady led the Patriots on two scoring drives to force overtime. In the second overtime the Patriots won on a field goal. Brady finished the game with 33 completions on 54 attempts for 364 yards, and 2 touchdowns. Brady went on to win 11 of the 14 games he started and the Patriots won the AFC East. Brady finished the season with 2,843 passing yards and 18 touchdown and an invitation to the Pro Bowl!! In Brady’s 10 seasons as a starter, the Patriots have earned trips to the Super Bowl in 5 of them, winning 3. Brady had won

2 Super Bowl MVP awards, and he has been selected to 8 Pro Bowls, and Brady holds the NFL record for most touchdown passes in a regular season. Brady has a career record of 17-6 and his playoff win total is the highest in NFL history. Brady also helped set the record for the longest consecutive win streak in NFL history with 21 straight wins over two season(2003-04) In 2007 Brady led the Patriots to the first undefeated regular season since the institution of the 16game schedule. Tom Brady has the third highest career passer rating of all time(96.6) among quarterbacks with at least 1,500 career passing attempts. In 2012, Brady became the first quarterback in NFL history to lead his team to 10 division titles. Brady and Joe Montana are the only two players in NFL history to win the NFL Most Valuable Player and the Super Bowl MVP awards multiple times. Tom Brady and John Elway are the only two quarterbacks to lead their teams to five Super Bowls. Brady was also named the NFL MVP in 2007 and 2010. Tom Brady was named the 2007 Male Athlete of the Year by the Associated Press. Now that’s a pretty good career for a guy selected # 199 in the 6 round!!!! Way to stick it out Tom!! The Super Bowl By Leon Simon The Super Bowl in New Orleans is finally set. The San Francisco 49ers and the Baltimore Ravens. This might not be the most glamorous match, but boy does it have a ton of story lines. The Har-bowl , the two participating coaches are the Harbaugh brothers , Jim coaches the 49ers John the oldest by only 14 mos. Coaches the Ravens. First time in NFL history this has happened. Then there’s the Ray Lewis story, Ray’s the spiritual and emotional leader and the signal caller on defense for the last 16 years, is playing his last game. With those story lines you would think that would be enough intrigue for two weeks, not so fast. The NFL instituted the Rooney rule to help the promotion and hiring practices of minorities in the NFL. Mainly the hiring of minorities at the head coaching position well there were 8 coaches fired and no minorities hired. The candidate that’s getting the most attention or should I say the lest attention is the Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator. Jim Caldwell, Jim didn’t get one interview for a coaching position. Let’s look at his resume. After the usual assistant coach route, he was a member of the Tony Dungy Super bowl staff. On Tony’s retirement he was made head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, in his rookie season as head coach he went 14-2. Losing his last 2 regular season game, after following the instructions of then general manager Bill Polian and resting Peyton Manning and most of the starters for the last 2 games eventually losing to the New Orleans s Saints in the Super bowl. His second year he went 10-6 losing to the Jets in play-offs. His 3rd season the Colt’s without and injured

Peyton Manning went 2-14. Jim lost his job, less than 2 weeks he was a member of the of the Baltimore Ravens staff. As quarterback coach, on December10 the Ravens let offensive coordinator Cam Cameron go because they were having problems scoring, Jim was elevated to offensive coordinator and play caller. The Raven never lost another game; the anemic offense is now averaging 25.8 points per game. They won the AFC Championship game in Foxboro, Mass. 28-13 over a highly favorite New England team at home, with Tom Brady at Quarterback. At half time the Ravens were down 13-7, the prognosticators said Jim’s offense was too predictable in the first half, running on every 1st down. It was later stated that it could have been a perfectly called offensive performance by Jim and the Ravens 33 runs and 36passes in a come from behind victory. It’s usually a more pass oriented attack coming from behind. It seems as though my good friend John Wooten and the powers that be thinks the Rooney rule needs revising. The league is easing back into that recycling of the good ole boys net work. Chip Kelly went to the Philadelphia Eagle from Oregon, the only college coach brought in, With the exception of Andy Reid going to Kansas City the rest were new coaches. So for all intents and purposes the Rooney rule did work it just didn’t produce any minorities. Thus the revision process starts now; there is a great pool of young coaches out there and with the influx of the read option, and the athletic young college quarterbacks there will be more college coaches coming into the league. Problem is the colleges are lagging behind there are no young minority college coaches.

Just a Bite with Lorie at Black-eyed Pea - Arlington Highlands

Well, I am back in the Arlington Highlands and The Black-eyed Pea has recently opened up a restaurant here. It was a late evening meal being shared with a wonderful young lady, Raven. If you remember I visited another of these chains several months ago and left disappointed. Well, I am happy to report that this was an entirely different experience. So let me start. Not sure if it is because the Arlington Highlands is the new evening spot for a Friday night but The Black-eyed Pea was busier than I had expected but not as busy

the side. I had, of course the corn and the carrots. The carrots had a natural sweetness to them so they were right up my alley. The corn was none descript but at least it was not low quality canned so I am happy. Raven choice was the signature House Made Meatloaf and she was also happy with her choice. When served it did look similar to the picture in the menu and she said it too was a good choice. Now I am not a germ-a-phobic but I have a distaste of being served drinks that are in open containers sitting on ledges around

as some of the other spots nearby. But again The Black-eyed Pea offers no entertainment so all considering it was busy. It is a nice clean family spot to have a Bite after shopping and before going home. The service was good and service was quick. My choice was the Southwest Chicken Casserole. The Casserole was surprising very good. It is layers of corn tortillas, chicken breast, Cheddar cheese, tomatoes, onions & fire-roasted chilies baked in a creamy Cheddar sauce. It is served with Pico de Gallo and sour cream. For you to apply as you like I recommend you ask for both to be served on

the dining room. Come on there are people sitting around these pitchers who are sick, sneezing and coughing and you want to top off my drink from these containers. Not here!!!! Our server felt the same and did not refill my ice tea from these containers but from the fountain. Thank you! Many previously incarcerated men and women in Texas have tremendous difficulty finding suitable employment to sustain themselves and their families. Unfortunately some return to lives of crime, often unable to find livable wage jobs, and lacking the skills required to compete in a society that is increasingly technology dependent. According to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice there were 151,988 men and women in state prisons on November 30th, 2012. Of these, 53,990 were AfricanAmerican, 49,880 were Hispanic, 47, 345 were white and seven hundred and seventy-three were classified as “other.” A study released recently stated that 24.3 percent of the men and women released from Texas penal institutions between 2007 and 2010 returned to prison within three years. The situation that we face is alarming. It costs tax payers more to maintain an inmate for one year than it does to send him or her to a state college for two semesters. We have children who are without parents and grandparents having to raise their grandchildren. One of the organizations vigorously fighting to change the situation we find ourselves in is the Urban League of Greater Dallas and North Central Texas. Since 2005 it has serviced 929 former inmates with a program teaching technical and social skills designed to prevent

them from returning to prison. Participants are also given job placement assistance. Approximately 200 people, of all races, complete the program each year. The program, funded with a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor, has performed so well that its recidivism rate is only eight percent, much lower than the state’s rate. Participants are taught job skills, given transportation assistance and helped with clothing. At least two participants, after completing the program, opened their owned businesses and hired others who were former inmates. Under the leadership of Dr. Beverly MitchellBrooks, the President and CEO of the League, the director of the program, Yvonne Young, was invited to the White House in April of 2008. There she shared with others the program’s success in Dallas. For some entrepreneurs in this country prisons have become an industry. They are projecting prison growth based on the failure rates of second and third graders. As a society we must prove them wrong. We must support programs such as the one run by the Urban League and others. All men and women who make mistakes in life should not be stored away and allowed to deteriorate. We have to do all we can to restore them, particularly those who deserve a second chance.

to a white family as a wedding gift. Anderson Bonner married Eliza and nine known children were borne to that union; Newton, William, Ed, John, Andy, Mary, Martha, Charlie and Nash. Eliza was originally for Arkansas. The children helped work the farm. He grew cotton, corn, and fruit, along with other types of crops. Eliza died as the result of a lamp explosion and fire in their home. Those who saw the explosion said she placed her hands over her head when the lamp blew up in her face and caught fire. Later on Anderson Bonner married Lacinda from Waxahachie, Texas. The First school for black children in the North Dallas area was the Vickery and Hillcrest School. It was re-named to the Anderson Bonner School. The school was closed by the Richardson ISD when Hamilton Park School opened in 1955. Prior to World War II many black groups held picnics on a section of the farm on Forest Lane, including the property where Medical City Hospital is now located

(Forest Lane and Central Expressway). Central Expressway was cut through the farm. The City of Dallas officially named the park west of Medical City Hospital, Anderson Bonner Park. The park runs along White Rock Creek and is complete with bicycle trails and recreation areas. This area was also a part of the original farm. Anderson Bonner had four surviving grandchildren, the offspring of Charlie and Hallie Bonner; Eunice Bonner-Turner, Henry Andersonson Bonner, and Marie Bonner and one child of John and Pearl Turner Bonner; Odessa Bonner-Hill. Odessa was the only surviving child of John and Pearl Bonner. The sister of Anderson Bonner, Caroline, married Ed Fields, Pearl Tu r n e r- B o n n e r, Wife of John Bonner, was From the Turner Family. One of the Fields descendants married a Giddings. This established linkage among several of the pioneer African American families who migrated to the farm lands along White Rock Creek in settlements known as the Upper and Lower White Rock Creek areas. These families, along with others, had extensive land holdings along a line between Dallas and Richardson and from Garland to Carrollton.
