while many in lancaster and southern Dallas lost many of their possessions during the recent tornadoes that ripped through the area, several individuals and groups responded selflessly to assist their neighbors and strangers bring normalcy back into their lives. One of the first people to hit the streets after the storm was dianne gibson named “Miss Community” by radio personality Skip Murphy, looking for storm victims and doing whatever she could to ease the pain and devastation that the storm introduced into the lives of so many innocent people. “i was in a store when news of the storm came over the television,” said Ms. gibson. “i rushed back to City Hall where people like Mayor Rawlings, Councilman tennell Atkins and Councilwoman Carolyn Davis were coordinating storm relief activities. “they went to the hardest hit areas on the day of the storm. i did not get there until the next day,”

she said. Ms. gibson says that she has worked with churches and nonprofits such as Habitat for Humanity to cut down trees and remove trash from the yards and homes of residents. “the demonstration of love by people has been God inspired,” she said. “we went from house to house, knocking on doors to make sure that everyone was alive and well. “when we knocked on doors the first question that most people asked was whether or not their neighbors had survived the storm.”

Ms. gibson spoke to the family whose house had been crushed by a tractor trailer truck. “it was a blessing that they were not home,” she said. “the crash destroyed their bedrooms. they could have been in their house sleeping. But saw fit to keep them alive.” Ms. gibson praised the work of city elected officials for what they did immediately after the storm. “they went right to work,” she said. “their first concern was making sure that the people of the city were safe,” she said. Ms. gibson said that residents of south Dallas and residents of lancaster would continue to benefit from the goodwill and largess of people of goodwill. “i am a member of the Concord Baptist Church,” she said. “we plan to join other faith institutions and community groups in aiding the people of lancaster. “there is a major clean-up effort planned for April 28th. we are going everything that we can to restore the lives of the people who were impacted by the storm,” she said.

FOUNDING THOUGHTS

Dr. William Blair

Obama Deserves a Second Term Elite News Founder

i have lived longer than most people who are reading this newspaper. i have witnessed the administrations of more United States Presidents than most people ever have or ever will. Over the years i have grown to become a student of Presidential politics and in this column i would like to share my thoughts with our readers about the next election. For starters, President Barack Obama should be re-elected and he should be reelected overwhelmingly over the presumed Republican presidential nominee, Mitt Romney. Mr. Obama has done a marvelous job as president. in the past 18 months, the number of jobs created has increased. Banks, under the administration’s leadership, regained their footing and the housing industry is booming once again. Voters in the states of Michigan and Ohio, i believe, will vote for Mr. Obama over Mr. Romney because when the auto industry was on its back, the President called for the intervention of the federal government. Mr. Romney said that the auto industries should be allowed to go out of business. that would have meant the elimination of tens of thousands of jobs in the automobile and related industry. today, the auto industry, having done well, has rebounded and a U.S. company is selling more cars than any other in the world today. let’s be honest, there are a large number of voters in the country who are against President Obama simply because of the color of his skin. if he were their color, they would be backing him with tremendous enthusiasm. Yet, there are others, people of sober minds and good will, who will vote for Mr. Obama, even though he is of mixed ancestry. these are people who are concerned about principle and not about prejudice. they were for him in 2008 and i am convinced that they will be for him in 2012. it is interesting that Mr. Obama has nearly a 20 percent lead over Mr. Romney among women voters. when he became President one of his first pieces of legislation that was signed into law was one guaranteeing that women receive equal pay for the work that they do. Raised by a single parent, his mother, Mr. Obama knows the special difficulties that women face in this society, particularly those who are raising children by themselves and working more than one job to make ends meet. Come november, women voters will rush to the polls to vote for Mr. Obama because they know that he has their best interests at heart. Mr. Romney does not understand their issues nor does he understand their pain. i will be standing in line waiting to vote just after the women who will help re-elect the President. they know the good that he has done and they know the good that he will continue to do. Ask Dr. Hollie

Dear Dr. Hollie, i have a dilemma. My sister and her husband had been married for 23 years when she decided she was not happy and left him. when they married, both families had misgivings about them marrying. Over the ensuing years, they appeared to overcome those objections and made a good life for their family. they have one child who is now in college. She is devastated over her parents’ separation, as is her father. My brother-in-law didn’t want the separation and tried to reconcile for over a year. My sister first claimed that she just wanted to be on her own. She insisted that she did not want another man in her life. However, three months into the separation, she began seeing someone seriously. She moved in with him and has lived with him now for almost a year. My brother-in-law has kept in contact with our family—even attending a few family gatherings when my sister was definitely not going to be there. we have often discussed him getting back together with my sister. i was all for reconciliation for a long time but her behavior has changed drastically since starting her “new” life. She has become self-centered and arrogant. She even says she believes she has outgrown our family and prefers to be around her more sophisticated friends. She has not attended a family function in quite a while and we seldom receive even a phone call from her. then, seemingly out of the blue, she stopped by my house today. Even more surprisingly, she told me that she was considering going back to her husband. As she continued to talk, i learned that the guy she was living with had been fired from his high-paying job and her life style would consequently have to be downsized considerably. She also revealed that he was not likely to regain his social status. She wants me to act as go-between for reconciliation with her husband. the problem with that is that i know how much she hurt him and that he is just starting to get his life back on track. He has met a nice young lady that attends his church. And, though i know it’s not my decision, i don’t think she deserves him. As for the input i’m being asked to give, i don’t want to have anything to do with the possibility of them getting back together and her hurting him further. She says that as a Christian i shouldn’t sit in judgment of her and that i should be excited to be a part of their reunion. i told her that i would rejoice with them if they do reunite. However, i don’t know if she wants him back because she loves him or because she no longer has access to the “good life.” Am i being judgmental and unforgiving? Should i be willing to get involved? Christianity vs. Realism

Dear Christianity, I think for this complicated matter you will better serve yourself by letting these grown folks work out their own problems. I wouldn't try to figure it out or judge what's better for either of them. If you stay out of it you will keep your relationships intact.

The Perfect Storm By Henry Nelson

happen. Storms came in the life of Jesus as well. He and the disciples found themselves in the middle of a ferocious squall out on the lake. this was nothing unusual on the Sea of Galilee; it is in a basin surrounded by mountains and notorious for furious storms. Rising just to the north over the lake is beautiful Mount Hermon. Mount Hermon is capped with snow, and sometimes the cold air from the top of Mount Hermon rushes down the mountain and blows across the lake. the force of the cold air meeting the hot moist air around Galilee can be explosive, as it was on the day in our story. Jesus and his friends are in the middle of the lake when the squall hits. it is terrifying and it looks as though they will not survive the storm. what happens next is something for which neither the reader nor the disciples are prepared. Allow me to point out some obvious and simple lessons from this story. the first is: Storms will come. the apostle Peter reminds us in 1st Peter 4:12 it says, “Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you.” there are many who do not seem to understand

35That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, "Let us go over to the other side.”36Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. 37A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, "Teacher, don't you care if we drown?" 39He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, "Quiet! Be still!" Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. 40He said to his disciples, "Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?" 41They were terrified and asked each other, "Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!"

it has been interesting to watch the blame game during the recent disasters which hit the southern part of our country. the mayor was to blame. no, it was the director of FEMA. no, it was the governor of the state. no, it was the people who refused to evacuate. no, it was the people who built the levees. no, it was the president. You know what? it was a storm! And when a storm that size hits, no amount of human intervention could have prevented what happened. there will always be enormous loss of property and lives. Storms will come and stuff will

this. the disciples seemed to be shocked that they were in this position. After all, was not Jesus with them? would not God protect his Messiah, and therefore protect his followers? How then could this happen? i sometimes meet people who have the same feeling of shock when some storm comes into their lives. Did not i do all the right things? is not God supposed to watch out for his own? Does not he protect those he loves? How can this be happening to me? i am sure those are the questions which were marching through the heads of the disciples. i was reading in the book of Hebrews this past week and i came across a fascinating passage. it was talking about Abraham and the wonderful promises God made to him, but then this verse popped out at me that says, in Hebrews 6:15, “And so after waiting patiently, Abraham received what was promised.” Amen! i was reading it in the original language which puts it much stronger. it uses the word macrothumia which can be translated “longsuffering.” that would make it say, “And so after longsuffering, Abraham received what was promised.” God made a great promise to Abraham, but in order to receive it, Abraham had

to go through longsuffering. this is life, even with the promises of God. Endurance and faith are the keys, and these things are only possible because of the promises and faithfulness of God. the Bible says in Hebrews 6:19, “we have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.” Amen! there are some people reading this week’s message in whose life a storm is raging. For some of you it is financial. For others it is a health issue. Still others are being swamped in the area of relationships. You have tried to be a good person and do the right thing, and yet you feel like you are sinking, and you want to know the same thing the disciples wanted to know: “Jesus, do not you care if i drown? Are you aware of what i am going through?” what is interesting is that when Matthew and luke tell this story in their gospels, they leave out this question about whether Jesus cared about them and their perilous situation. Matthew and luke simply record the words of the disciples as, “lord, save us! we are going to drown! If you would like the entire message please contact me at:revelations_75044@msn.com

Prayer Closet

The greatest and best thing that happens when we pray is that we are changed and transformed; maybe not in one prayer experience, but certainly through the days and the years. It is unfortunate that most of have a narrow, childish concept of prayer. We think of it as asking some special favor and getting it. We treat it as though it does not involve a spiritual relationship of man with God and God with man. Blessed is the man who prays; “Have thine own way Lord, have thine own way!” Thou art the potter; and I am the clay. Mold me and make me, after thine own will, while I am waiting, yielded and still. Here's hoping the Mavs, who've lost some close ones recently are able to get on the right foot Saturday night against Derrick Rose and the Chicago Bulls at the AA Center! the Bulls currently have the best record in the nBA. Dallas Cowboy OtA's started last week...no pads, no coaches, no one on one's are the rules, but strength training and route running are in full effect. Hopefully Dez Bryant can get his head around the entire play book, in this his 3rd year on the team. it's time for Dez to grow up and step up as a leader. Hopefully Miles Austin sets a better example for the young receiver by showing up in great shape, as opposed to last year when he was hobbled all season by injuries! Finally, at press time the nFl Draft had not happened(thursday at 7p)...Here's hoping the Cowboy's selected one of the following three in the draft...1)Safety Mark Barron, 2)DE Fletcher Cox or)nt/Dt Dontari Poe. May the Boys spend every pick on defense this year. tony Romo's offense rocked last season, but the "D" could not have stopped my 84 year old Mother! Martial arts master Matt Fiddes, who provided protection for the King of Pop when he was in the UK, is filing court papers in America to demand the right to see 10-year-old Blanket, whose birth name is Prince Michael Jackson ii. Rebuilding Our Community By Sherry Christian Elite News Staff

“History, although sometimes made up of the few acts of the great, is more often shaped by the many acts of the small” and in this past Saturdays meeting for the Men and Boy’s conference it was great to hear Corey toney of “no limit Bail Bonds and Ct’s Real Deal Bar-B-Que a owner of successful black businesses as well as a resident of Dallas, who was speaking on rebuilding our community and James talley a Certified Public Accountant with wealth Building and Founding CEO of J.H. talley CPA’s. Mr. toney opened up his message with a passage out of the Bible (nehemiah 1:3) talking about how the “walls were torn down” in Jerusalem and how the people of israel were left with no protection in their city. which leads us to the question at hand how can we rebuild our community? And issue a protective sense of security, all at the same time. for 1): the love for our neighbors has grown cold, our Mom and Pop stores are no longer in our communities, and some of our community leaders have no desire to rebuild within our communities. For 2) when you think of the black community and the percentage of black owned businesses have declined tremendously, why? it is do to buyer attrition in relations to black on black business’s, the late great Dr. Martin luther King Jr was once quoted as saying “in a

multiracial society, no group can make it alone….Organized strength will only be effective when it is consolidated through constructive alliances with the majority group.” the Black community is at a crossroads where our Youngman are concerned and how we effectively deal with this crisis. So Men and Boy’s conference to the rescue as Corey toney and larry taylor led a charge to bring our young men to Christ and leadership in conjunction with nFl Football player Greg Ellis of the Oakland Raiders and formerly of the Dallas Cowboys, Brother Johnny Brown who spoke on

“Dysfunctional to Deliverance” as well as Hall of Fame preacher Rev.A. C.Stapleton pastor of Shekinah tabernacle MBC who closed the event with arousing message and charge to our young males in attendance. As well as the following deacons walter Mosley, Melvin Parish, Joseph lounza Jr, Alvin Steele, lark walker, Kevin Mondy, will Mundine, Antonio Johnson and Rev. Jamile Dickson. Hats off to the Ervay Cedar Missionary Baptist Church “Men’s and Boy’s Conference” and remember ‘it’s tiME OUt.”

The Drive to Greatness: Dallas ISD – A Leader in Urban Public Education

C E L E B R A T I N G

How the district earns the designation of “A leader in Urban Public Education” depends on several factors, including the selection of a strong and proactive superintendent, which i believe we have accomplished. it will take some work on everyone’s part, starting with the Board of trustees. the Board has developed nine goals to shape Dallas iSD into the mechanism necessary to move the district to a higher level of performance. these goals address highly effective teachers and school leaders; safe, secure and welcoming environments; shared responsibility; rigorous curriculum; a positive and compassionate culture; professional development; data driven decisions; supportive central services; and, well-maintained facilities. Each goal has defined strategies. However, goals and strategies without adequate resources for successful implementation are mere words on paper. So, what are our next steps? the Board is primed to move forward. Several schools are making great strides in many areas. Our graduation rate is the highest it has been since 1983. the Council of the Great City Schools has declared Dallas iSD one of the nation’s fastest improving urban school dis-

tricts. But, there is much work to be done. will you help? Over the next few years, all of Dallas must step up to the plate, prepared to address our responsibilities to our children; the future of Dallas depends on it. i believe the

Dallas ISD Board President Dr. Lew Blackburn, District 5

first step is visualizing the Dallas iSD as America’s Premier Urban District. it’s using whatever level of creativity you possess to see the district in this new light and believe the vision is possible. Believing the vision can lead to ownership of the goals and acceptance of your role in making the vision a reality, regardless of how little or large that role may be. what role will you play? However, the belief can only become as concrete as the people who

take part in making things happen. Citizens across Dallas, including Mayor Mike Rawlings, have chosen to partner with the district to make a difference. the opportunities to join the drive to greatness are vast and can begin in every home and classroom across Dallas. what about you? the Board of trustees and district staff must acknowledge, accept and put into action our role, with purpose and intent, supporting the superintendent’s reforms. Parents and families need to encourage and support all children to strive to be the best in every endeavor. neighborhoods need to aid their community schools by providing fiscal, physical and human resources. Businesses and faithbased entities, small and large, must join hands with Dallas iSD schools and administration. we all have something to offer. it’s just a mat-

ter of finding where and how you can make a contribution. what is your role? we cannot continue on the road we have been traveling. it is imperative we move in corridors of reform and innovation using creative and engaging approaches that place every student at or above grade level. Along with other districts, we can set common core standards that are not solely state test-based. Hand-in-hand with area social service resources, we can help meet the multitude of student needs that impact the educational process. How will you help? Every road we travel must take our students closer to the ultimate academic achievement, college and

career readiness. And we have to do this within the budgetary and other restraints under which we operate. i believe it can be done. what about you? Visualize and believe in Dallas iSD. Join the effort. Contact a local school, or call the Office of Community Relations at 972-9253920 to discuss how you can become engaged. will you call today? As always, i am available to meet with your organization to discuss these opportunities and the many successes in Dallas iSD in general and in District 5 in particular. Contact my office at 972-9253718 to schedule a meeting with your group. And, follow me on Facebook and twitter.

Toliver’s Talents

By Mark A. Toliver II Elite News Sports Writer

"Run Baby Run," these were the cheers from parents at the District Championships last week. this is play-off time for track and field athletes all over the Metroplex. track athletes run about 10 track meets a year, all of these track meets are important, but there are three track meets that are very important. there is the district championsiphs, the regional championships, and the state championships. in order to advance you have to win!! last week the track and field world was on fire! Big time sprinter Araham Hall ofSouth Grand Prairie had every body talking after he was reportedly clocked in a time of 9.74 in the 100 meter dash. the officials stated that it was some type of malfunction with the time clock, this was funny to me because i've been around track all my life and i have seen high schoolers run some remarkable times! i saw Roy"Robot" Martin run the 100 meters under 10 seconds, i saw Bobby"turbo"Johnson run the 100 meters

in under 10 seconds, i saw Henry neal blaze the 100 meters in under 10 seconds. it's not hard for me to believe that Hall ran the 100 meters under 10 seconds, Hall is one of the top sprinters in the state this year and i can believe he can run under 10 seconds in the 100 meters, after the time was converted his time was 10.2 which is about the average time of the top sprinters in this area. Hall has been a dominant sprinter all season and is one of the favorites to win the regional championship.Hall qualified for the state championship last year. this city has always been known to have the top sprinters in the state and this year is no different. the Desoto Eagles showed that they are a force to be reckoned with. the Eagles won the 4x 100 meter relay, the Eagles won the 4x 200 meter relay and the Eagles won the 4x400 meter relay. the Eagles also had two sprinters advance to the regional championships with tramine Acy and Ridge Jones run a fantastic 100 meter dash. the best race of the weekend was the 200 meter dash that was won by Desoto's Dontre wilson. wilson ran one of the strongest 200

meter races that i've seen in a long time! this young sprinter ran the curve and continued to push through the back stretch his aggresive running style made the other runners quite! His time was 21.1 but the second place time was 21.7 needless to say he blew the competition off the track! the Eagle's are taking 3 relays to the regional championships and a host of indi-

viduals, this could lead to a regional championship and possibly a state championship. But just remember this is play-off time, win it or go home. So with two meets left nobodies track team can come to "See the Show" you have to come to "Be the Show"!!! Good luck to all!!!
