Hebrews 12:1-3 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for Henry Nelson us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.”

hen Mike Ditka, was the New Orleans Saints football coach he had a reputation for optimism, he came into the locker room to give his team a pregame pep talk."All right Boys!" he said, "Here we are, unbeaten, untied and unscored upon and ready for the first game of the season." The anticipation was that now there are a bunch of people who want to see what you guys can do. I read about a schoolboy who brought home his report card. It was heavy with poor grades. "What have you to say about this?" asked his
father. "One thing for sure," the boy replied, "Dad, you can be proud. You know I have not been cheating!" Find something to be excited about. Look ahead with positive purpose Look forward they once asked Barry Sanders, what is your goal when you run the ball? Barry said every time I run the ball I keep my eyes on the end zone. If I ever look anywhere else I will fail. We need to look forward to where God has asked us to go. If we look anywhere else we will fail. Amen! Lee de Forest, 1926, inventor of the cathode ray tube said,”Theoretically, television may be feasible, but I consider it an impossibility; a development which we should waste little time dreaming about.” Thomas J. Watson, 1943, Chairman of the Board of IBM said, “I think there is a world market for about five computers.” Recording company expert, 1962. “We do not think the Beatles will do anything in their market. Guitar groups are on their way out.” All of these people were left behind because that had no vision for the future. The bible reminds us that “where there is no vision the people parish.” We must not forget the prosperous promises He has made or the Positive possibilities he has shown Henry Kissinger, former Secretary of State, Jan. 9, 1989 said, “More than at any time in history, mankind faces a crossroads; one path
leading to despair and utter hopelessness, the other leading to total destruction. Let us pray we have the wisdom to choose correctly.” Today in the life of the church more than any other time in history we are facing a crossroads, one path leading to prosperity and another leading to a slow deterioration. Let us pray we have the wisdom to choose correctly. Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God. Corrie Ten Boom a holocaust survivor. Some of you may have set your clocks back but your eyes still need to look forward. What do you see when you look forward? Maintain a positive attitude. Maintaining a positive attitude is a key to success. Your attitude is an inward feeling which is expressed by your behavior. Parents are called to a meeting at their child’s class. The issue; their 5th grade child is causing disturbances in the class and grades are low. The aptitude tests show that the child has the capabilities yet he is still failing miserably. The teacher suggests that the child has a bad attitude. We talk about attitudes every day. The truth is some of the greatest people in the world have had incredible attitudes, and some of the same people have had incredible deficiencies and handicaps as well. So as a church you may have some wonderful tools but if you maintain a lousy attitude you will fail. On the other hand you may not
have every tool you would like, but if you nurture an attitude of winning, God is sure to bless the efforts. Amen! You need to grasp this concept; “My attitude dictates my performance” Amen! Lou Holtz head coach at Southern California said, “Ability is what you are capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it” John Maxwell recalls playing a high school basketball team that was not having a good season. One day the coach held a team meeting and said “fellows your abilities say win, but your attitudes say lose.”Amen! t was a day fit for honoring a living legend. The rain from the night before turned out to be a blessing in disguise. The sun stayed hidden, and the breeze blowing through the trees, blew the American flag high above the crowd who gathered in attendance to honor our very own, Negro League Pitcher turned newspaper publisher, Dr. William “Bill” Blair, Jr. Bill Blair’s friend, Mr. Jerry Bob “The Duckin Man” Chambers, introduced the idea of a park to honor his friend, and thus the task of renaming a park in honor of our Senior Publisher began. On Saturday, September 17th at 10:00 am, at 3000 Municipal Street, the Dallas Park and Recreation Department renamed Rochester Park to “William Blair, Jr. Park”. City officials, dignitaries, family and friends alike paused to celebrate and honor, Mr. Bill Blair. The Kimball Knights and The Lincoln Tigers marching bands made sure the morning started off with music and dance, after which the presentation of colors was presented by the Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Magnet Center. Former City of Dallas Mayor and current Councilman from District 4, Dwaine Caraway took to the microphone to preside over the actual renaming ceremony. The invocation was given by Pastor Charles
S
Lightner of the New Comforter Church of God in Christ. Afterwards, the New Comforter Church Choir treated those in attendance with a beautiful, rousing a cappella rendition of the National Anthem. Ms. Joan Waine, President of the Dallas Park and Recreation Board, extended words of welcome. Jordan Blair, Senior Publisher of the Elite News and son of Dr. William “Bill” Blair, talked about the life and the legacy of his father as he gave the occasion for the morning. City of Dallas Mayor, Mike Rawlings offered expressions of congratulations and gratitude to Mr. Blair on behalf of all of the citizens of Dallas, and applauded Mr. Blair for his leadership of the Elite News for more than 50 years and for his service to the city. Rev. Dr. R.E. Price of the New Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Reverend B.L. Horn of the Golden Chain Baptist Church and Dr. C.C. Robertson, Pastor of the Bexar Street Baptist Church and President of the National Missionary Baptist Convention of America, gave expressions of gratitude to their friend and brother Mr. Bill Blair. John Beckwith, Jr., CEO of the Golden Gate Funeral Homes also offered words of congratulations and gratitude to Dr. Blair. Mr. Jordan Blair presented the members of the William ‘Bill” Blair Legacy Committee with Houston Astros baseball caps and he presented his father with an autographed baseball signed See Pictures from Dedication

by Texas Rangers’ Owner and General Manager Nolan Ryan. Councilman Caraway read a letter addressed to Mr. Blair from former Negro League player, turned Country Music star, Charley Pride, whom Mr. Blair mentored, and a letter from the Negro League Museum President, Mr. Bob Kendricks. A proclamation from State Senator Royce West was read, after which the honoree himself took the podium to thank those in attendance and the Bill Blair Legacy Committee for all their hard work in putting the program together. Mr. Blair has spent many years supporting the church community, and thus, created the first of its kind Religious Hall of Fame. He also recognizes and honors ordinary people who do extraordinary things in their communities. So it is befitting at this time to honor someone who is always thinking of others as well as better ways to serve his community, Mr. William “Bill” Blair. It’s also absolutely appropriate to give Mr. Blair this honor while he can still enjoy it. Afterwards, the celebration moved to the baseball diamond where children of all ages engaged in games of baseball and softball. When the idea of a park being named in Mr. Blair’s honor was first discussed, Mr. Blair had only one condition: that the park is used as a positive place for children to come and engage in the sport of baseball and all types of sporting activities. A service well done and a special “Thank You” to Jerry Bob Chambers for this great idea, to the Bill Blair Legacy Committee and The Dallas Parks Foundation, to Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings and Councilman Dwaine Caraway, to friends and family members, to our sponsors and supporters: The Houston Astros, The Texas Rangers, Kroger, CocaCola, Wells Fargo, Elite News, The City of Dallas, Nolan Ryan Meat Co., Dallas County Schools, ALP Printing, The King Group, the Citizens of Dallas, Mr. John Jenkins, and especially Mr. Kevin Moore and the entire staff of the Parks and Recreation Department - thanks for helping to make this a very memorable occasion.

Establish Daily Routines for Student Success By: Lew Blackburn DISD
N
ow that the school year is under way with parents and students settling into their daily routines, it’s a good time to review past study habits and make some changes that will ensure student success in school. Being successful in school is not limited to what happens in the classroom. Parents can assume an important role in making sure that their children have good study habits. Select a specific hour for homework. Establish when children can watch television and for how long. Establish a specific routine for meals and bedtime. Make sure that your child has the appropriate books, supplies, and a dedicated place for studying. Offer to help your child with homework, especially with assignments that may present some difficulty. Most importantly, take time to learn what subjects your child excels in and which ones are the most difficult. Establishing a study routine is very important, especially for younger children. It will not only help them with their study habits but will also help them to realize the importance of making education a priority in their lives. How will you help your child develop good study
habits? Another way to help your child succeed is by working with your child’s teacher. Communicating with the teacher on a regular basis can have a significant impact on your child’s performance in the classroom. Other ways to stay involved are to volunteer at the school, read all handouts that the school principal and teacher send home, and attend all parent conferences. An even simpler way to gauge your child’s learning is to ask about their day in class; topics discussed, subjects covered, and interactions with other students. Parents and teachers are two halves of a team working to ensure that children acquire the knowledge and skills they need to be successful in the grade they are in and be prepared for years ahead. That is why communicating with your child’s teacher is crucial. Of course not all parents have the opportunity to meet with their children’s teachers during the day. The district designates parent conference nights each semester to offer opportunities for parents to visit the school and interact with teachers. This fall parent conferences are scheduled for 4 to 8 p.m. and will be held: Oct.11 (high school) Oct. 12 (middle school) and Oct. 13 (elementary school) Come prepared to ask questions and to share any circumstances that might affect a student’s progress. Below are some helpful tips that you can use to prepare for par-
With you when

Follow up with the teacher after the meeting. Of course, if there are any particular issues that need to be addressed, parents can request a conference any time of the year by calling the teacher to schedule a meeting. Mark your calendars for other important dates coming up in Dallas ISD: Monday, Sept. 26 Staff Development/ Student Holiday and Monday, Oct. 24 Early release day For public safety reasons, the Dallas ISD Board of Trustees has revised the district’s 2011-2012 calendar to provide separate Fair Days for elementary and secondary students and staff. Elementary students and staff will be out of school for their Fair Day on Friday, Oct. 7, which will be a regular school day for secondary students and staff. Secondary students and staff will be out of school for their Fair Day on Friday, Oct. 14, which will be a regular school day for elementary students and staff. The Lord is God of the planting and the harvest; the sowing and the reaping.
Out of the Eyes of a Layman Just How Magnificent Is Our God?
A
ll the things God have made, and Gene Turner the way He made them is mind-boggling. We as humans never really stop and think just how magnificent our God really is. God made the universe is such a way that man can never claim helping or altering God’s creation. God made the universe so huge that man gets bogged down just thinking about it. Just how big is our God? How big is our universe? As we read let us visualize just how big or how vast God’s thinking really is. Our universe is so huge that it takes a beam of light (which travels 700 million miles per hour) over 100,000 years just to cover the distant length of our galaxy called the Milky Way. Now watch this – but our galaxy is only one among many billions in the known universe, let’s use the thickness of a business card to represent the distance from the earth to the sun (93 million miles). If we used these business cards to measure the distance to the nearest star, we would need a stack of business cards 71 feet high. To cover the diameter of our Milky Way galaxy, we would need a stack of cards 310 miles high. To reach the edge of the known universe, we would need a stack of business cards 31 million miles high. If the sun was hollow, one million three thousand earths could fit inside. A star call Antares (if hollow) could hold sixty four million of our suns. In the constellation of Hercules there is a star which could contain 100 million of Antares. The largest known star, which is called the Epsilon Star, could easily swallow up several million stars the size of the one in Hercules. The Epsilon Star if hollow could hold 27 billion suns. We are making a weak attempt to illustrate the magnitude of our universe, which contains as many Stars as there are grains of sand on all the seashores of the world. Furthermore, in Psalm 147:4 and Isa. 40:26,
we are told that God has both numbered and named each star. “He calleth them all by their names”. Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things, that bringeth out their host by number; He calleth them all names by the greatness of his might, for that He is strong in power; not one faileth. Isa. 40:26. But more glorious than all this is the statement that this same omnipotent and omniscient God “ healeth the broken in heart and buildeth up their wounds (Ps. 147:3). A God, who is able to make or create such a vast world, would take time to heal our broken hearts, even after we have been at our worst. We serve a mighty God. And church folk, Christian’s, people of the household of faith have the gall to be stingy with God. As Laymen we should never be stingy with God about our money, our time, and our special skills. These are things, which God has already given. Laymen should never give it a second thought about material things given to God for the upbuilding of God’s kingdom here on earth. If the laymen of Texas plan to grow or go on to Spiritual growth we have got to get away from just Sunday morning service, a dollar in the offering, and five dollars in tithes. We need to make all services, witness in the marketplace, and fellowship with all brethren everywhere. God showed us by His creation how He thinks, God thinks huge, and He also thinks small. God can afford to think both ways if He wishes to do so, but we are not God and it’s hard for us to think in both directions at the same time, so let’s think Big. Let us not forget to read our Bibles. May God bless you REAL GOOD and may He ever keep you in His loving care.

It is not necessary to always experience things that are detrimental if we are willing to hear those that have been there and done that. Solomon encouraged his children to shy away from making decisions alone and to avoid hasty decision-making. Seeking advice from others promotes sound judgment, support, and success. It is fools who isolate themselves when they make decisions, their overconfidence will lead them to failure, and they may falter when they are met with defeat and realize when it is too late that they could have avoided the problem if only they

had sought the advice of others. Wisdom says that there is no one that knows everything, and there is safety in a multitude of council. The morning message was delivered by Pastor Lloyd Morgan from the subject Encourage where you can” Deut 1:37-39. Encourage is to give someone hope, confidence, or courage. We live in a time when people need a word of encouragement sometimes just to get up and face another day. The president is going around this nation trying to encourage those that have been unemployed for a long time, those that have lost all expectations for a job, to give them reason to believe that it will get better. Everybody at some time needs to be encouraged by someone. When you have failed in the past and God have lifted you, use your experience of his grace in your life to encourage others who may be experiencing a failure in their spiritual walk. Jesus instructed Peter before his denial to use his experience to strengthen the brothers. Be blessed! Deuteronomy 5:7 You shall have no other gods before me.

DISD....continued from page 4 schools before Sept. 30 and is available on the district’s Web site. On another note, budget issues from this past spring caused the district’s Athletic Department to re-evaluate 7th grade sports. All middle schools have previously fielded 7th grade football, volleyball and basketball teams. To create consistency among other sports such as soccer, track, baseball and softball, a decision was made to consolidate 7th and 8th grade teams. No sports have been eliminated but, if budget funds are available, the Athletic Department may allow those schools with significant interest to field 7th grade teams in football, volleyball and basketball with an abbreviated schedule. Corporate, social, professional, civic and community leaders will greet students, make the morning announcements and walk the halls at Dallas ISD schools as they leave their jobs to become “Principals for a Day” on Tuesday, October 4. Sponsored by Capital One Bank, in partnership with the Dallas Regional Chamber and Dallas ISD, the Principal for a Day program gives community leaders the opportunity to experience firsthand what Dallas ISD principals encounter on a daily basis. I am excited and proud of the following new schools and their principals: A. Maceo Smith New Tech High School – Brian Lusk, Wilmer-Hutchins High School – Marlon Brooks, Kennedy-Curry Middle School – Regina Rice, Barak Obama Male Leadership Academy – Nakia Douglas,
page 7
Wilmer-Hutchins Elementary School –Torey Page We applaud the new teachers and local campus staff who have accepted the challenge to work in these schools and to provide the best education for our students. How will you share your time and talents with them? Hats Off to the donors who provided thousands of back to school supplies and uniforms for our families in need and to the parents and other volunteers who will work sideby-side in our schools to help make this the best year ever! As of today, more than 7,000 individuals have completed their online application and are ready to get started. Have you signed up to volunteer? Finally, a very special “Thanks” is due to the community volunteers and supporters who made the Saturday, August 13 Welcome Back to Wilmer-Hutchins event a tremendous success. I received numerous positive comments from community members. They are excited! I welcome opportunities to meet with students, parents and community members about the many successes with Dallas ISD, and District 5 in particular. Contact my office at 972-925-3722 for a list of schools in District 5 where you can volunteer as a tutor or mentor, or to schedule my visit. Dallas ISD, and especially District 5, the Best is Yet to Come!

hile watching professional sports as long as I have it became apparent to me that there are an awful lot of muscle pulls. It became an issue with me when prior to the Leon Simon World Games all of our athletes that I call weak – hearted started having hamstring problems. When the number one sprinter in America; Tyson Gay pulled up my eyes popped open. This is a fad these are losers. Some people might think they’re injury prone NOT these are losers. In my years in the media I found out these muscle pulls are direct symptoms of neglect. A great number of these athletes have Chiropractors they employ to keep their bodies in proper alignment. If

you’re that in tune with your body why don’t you hire a nutritionist, muscle pulls and cramps come from the fact that there’s a deficiency or something in your diet. There are two things I’m tired of hearing in the news. I’m tired of hearing about the lack of rain, and I’m also tired of hearing Terrence Newman missed practice. Both happen every year in August and there’s nothing you can do about either. Terrence will get hurt again this year if the Cowboys don’t get him well and cut him. I didn’t come to call these guys losers without a little research. How many hamstrings do you think the likes of Jerry Rice, Walter Peyton, Barry Sanders, Jimmy Brown had. If you choose to make your living with your body, why don’t you study and take care of it? Some of those things are as simple as drinking water and eating Bananas. They have a couple of those dead beats players for the Texas Rangers. Adrian Beltre was off so long with a hamstring, I thought they had traded him! Nelson Cruz pull hamstrings watching other people run! If you know you’re going to lift a lot or squat a lot drink fluids and eat a lot of foods high in potassium, and

stretch. Dez Bryant will probably take a couple or 3 weeks with a bruised quad. Jimmie Brown only wore shoulder pads and helmet, and he never missed a down. No quad bruises, hamstring, or anything else of that nature. I know Felix Jones hurt a shoulder against the 49ers, but Felix will pull a groin or hamstring before Thanksgiving. You can count on Felix Jones, Terrence Newman, and a few others getting muscle pulls just like you can count on 100 degree weather in August and rain at the fair in October. You never see Hall of Famers with those loser injuries. It’s always the same guys that get them. I’ll make a declaration about a loser right now “you will never see usain Bolt run against Tyson Gay. Gay will get that loser’s limp every time he hears Bolt is in the country. He could be here for Dancing with the Stars or just in the country visiting and Gay will make sure he gets hurt! Martellus Bennett, Terrence Newman, and Felix Jones will get hurt at their retirement party.

High School Football This Week By: Warren Hodge ELITE NEWS STAFF
H
igh school football happens to be huge in Texas and has begun to get bigger with some of our local schools defeating out-of-state schools, and winning by wide margins (i.e., Skyline defeating Memphis (Tenn.) Ridgeway 47-7; Cocoa (Fla.) 36-20; and Desoto at Oklahoma City Douglass 63-0), to recognize Texas as 1 of the powerhouses of high school football. Allen is constantly climbing to the top of the National Rankings followed by Katy, Euless Trinity, Lake Travis, Coppell, Desoto, Skyline, Cibolo Steele, South Lake Carroll and Woodlands, TX, all ranked and playing extremely well. The state of Texas TD record for a high school career was shattered by Aledo’s Jonathan Gray, set from 2006 to 2009 by former Cayuga and current university of Texas running back Traylon Shead; Gray also previously announced his intent to play for Texas. There are a few remaining teams with winning records who will put their records up for the taking this weekend in district matchups. Some of the key matchups are: most anticipated, Allen (3-0), will face Plano (3-0); and State ranked Euless Trinity (4-0), will face Colleyville Heritage (4-0); these should be both high scoring and full of excitement. Other notable games will be West Mesquite at Lancaster

and Lake Dallas at Denton Ryan. There are a few area schools on the rise: South Oak Cliff (3-0), Kimball (3-0), and Woodrow Wilson (3-1). Teams with balance normally appear in championship games, but teams with onedimensional high-powered offenses or defenses are known to reach championship status. As we get closer to the middle of the season, teams are already jockeying for position. Several surprises have occurred such as the 0-3 start for the Carter Cowboy’s and West Mesquite, the 3-0 start for Kimball and South Oak Cliff, and a 3-1 start for Woodrow Wilson. There are so many talented teams and players to mention, but here is a short list of the week’s highlight game changes for this season. Beginning with Highland Park’s QB Brady Burgin, who is 59/78 comp, 75.64 pct, 768 yds, 11 TD’s, and 0 Int’s; another notable QB is Lancaster’s Davon Hodge, who is 40/54 comp, 74.07 pct, 615 yds, 7 TDs, and 1 int.; Flower Mound has a talented WR in Chas Taylor, 23 rec, 559 yds, 24.3 yds/catch, and 6 TD’s; also notable is Frisco’s RB Carlos Harris, 75 att, 856 yds, 11.41 yds/att, 13 TD’s; and Lancaster’s Jaquan White, 20 rec, 315 yds, 15.8 yds/catch, and 5 TD’s. Desoto, Skyline, and Allen all have highly ranked defenses that should have them competing deep into the playoffs. Our Texas high school football teams have become very powerful and competitive. Which area teams will continue winning and remain competitive in the playoffs?
