On the Block and Making A Difference: Bishop Ray Campbell By: lola SEaRCy

T

his week our “On the Block and Making a Difference” spotlight is on Bishop Ray Campbell. Bishop Campbell was born and raised in the small impoverished town of Cosby, Mississippi. He is the oldest of 5 siblings. He was an eighth grader when he lost his father and took on the responsibility of helping his mother to raise his younger siblings. He received his education in the Mississippi public schools and received his Bachelor’s degree from Alcorn State University. He earned his Master’s degree from Dallas Baptist University and continued to further his education by completing his doctorate work at Vision International University. In 1968, he accepted his call into the ministry and in 1970, he organized Ideal Pentecostal Church. The Ideal Pentecostal Church started out as a small store front church in South Dallas with just 3 members. The Ideal campus, which is now located at 1000 E. Red Bird Lane here in the city now boasts 3 buildings including an educational center and daycare, sanctuary and a family life center with a full gymnasium. Bishop Campbell has declared the word and led the flock at Ideal Pentecostal for over 40 years, where he

continues to teach about faith in God and God alone. Bishop Campbell is cur-rently serving as the CEO of Ideal Vision College where more than two hundred stu-dents have obtained their degree under Bishop Campbell’s leadership. Bishop Campbell’s favorite saying is “I make my living by giving”, and he has lived up to his motto. He continues to set the example of a true giver each year by reaching out to BIShoP Ray CaMPBEll those who are less congregation went back to Crosby; fortunate in and outside of our chartered a bus and transported more community. than 100 children to the local Wal-Mart A few years ago, Bishop Campbell store; they closed the store down while and a bus load of his members traveled they shopped for new school clothes. back to his hometown of Crosby, Afterwards, they set up tents and Bishop Mississippi and established the city’s first Campbell preached and ministered to annual “Community Day.” While there, those in attendance. You Must Stay In The Ship If You Want To Survive The Storm

hENRy NElSoN

H

Acts 27:30 “In an attempt to escape from the ship, the sailors let the lifeboat down into the sea, pre-tending they were going to lower some anchors from the bow.”

ere we are at the Christmas season and many of us do not know where the money for rent or food is coming from. As we look around our country today, as we watch the six o’clock news, or the CNN Network, or read the newspaper at home, make no doubt about it, we see ourselves in a storm. America is in a storm and everyday many people today are losing their jobs, losing their homes to foreclosure, and they do not have enough money to pay their bills. There are many families today that are so depressed and stressed out because they do not know how they are going to survive on a day to day basis. Many families are going through some tough times right now and we have been hearing reports how some heads of the households are killing off their own families, ending their lives because they feel that there is no way out of their

dilemma and they feel like there is no hope for them for the future. Amen! Yet in the midst of the storm that we are in, there is still hope for us in the future, especially hope in our Savior Jesus Christ. Psalm 31:24: says, “Be of good courage. And he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the Lord.” Amen! Jeremiah 17: 7 says, “Blessed is the man that trusts in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is.” Amen! It is a sweet relief in knowing that no matter what you are going through, no matter what storm you are facing, there is hope for you in the Lord for the present and there is hope for you in the future because God is able to bless you and sustain you even in the midst of the storm that you are in right now! Yes, God is able to take care of us in the midst of the storm that we are in, but if you want to be able to survive the storm that you are now in, you need to stay in the ship. Amen! Paul was on this ship as prisoner being transported to Rome to appear before Caesar because of his faith and because of preaching the gospel in places where he was not received well. In Acts 27:9-10, Paul had tried to persuade the centurion and the captain of the ship to wait for better weather to come before setting out to sail because at that day and time, the weather was becoming somewhat dangerous for

sailing. However they had decided to take a gamble and sail out into the sea despite of the bad weather conditions because they had some cargo that needed to be transported along with some prisoners. Has there been a time in your life that you found yourself in a storm simple because you did not want to listen to anyone? Your Mom and Dad were trying to tell you something, your best friend was trying to tell you something, your husband or wife was trying to tell you something, and your Preacher was trying to tell you something! What I mean is has there been anybody in your life that was trying to tell you something what was going to be helpful for you? But because you wanted to do your own thing, and you did not want to listen to nobody, you have found yourself in a storm that it was going to be hard to get out of. Now if the truth be told, the reason why the centurion and the captain of the ship did not listen to Paul was because they thought Paul did not know anything

about sailing a ship. They thought the only thing Paul knew how to do is preach and teach about the Lord. They did not realize that Paul had been sailing before, and he had been shipwrecked before and Paul knew what he was talking about when he told the centurion and the captain to hold off from sailing until better weather come along. They saw Paul just as a preacher, but they also saw Paul just a prisoner who needed to be transported. There is a lesson for us to learn and the lesson is be careful how you look at people. Do not be so quick to pass judgment on people just because they may not have a college degree or they do not live in a nice neighborhood, because they may be too old, or too young. God can use anyone to give you some common sense. I want you to know that no matter how bad the storm that you may be in, just know that God is able to take care of you in the midst of it. Dallas ISD green efforts save money and increase energy efficiency

T

he Dallas ISD is committed to an efficient use of resources, including energy. To that purpose, the district has been implement-ing a series of steps to more efficiently use energy in all DallaS ISD TRuSTEE lEW facilities. BlaCKBuRN DISTRICT 5 District employees have been turning off lights and computers when not in use. Turning off computers at the end of the day or putting them on sleep mode when not using them can save thousands of dollars a year in electricity consumption. Other conservation efforts include installing energy efficient equipment, having adjusted temperature set points, monitoring equipment runtime with building automation systems, modifying equipment operation schedules, and implementing a filter replacement program. In addition to activities on the conservation side, the Dallas ISD joined the Texas Public Power Pool, or P3, a group of governments and public entities that have come together to negotiate more favorable rates and contracts usually reserved for large industrial customers. Aggregation gives a group of customers the increased size and clout needed to effectively negotiate better rates with retail electric providers. All these efforts combined have had a positive financial impact for the district in the form of millions of dollars saved in the past three years. In 2008, the district spent $39.5 million in electricity. The electricity expenses went down to $35.9 million in 2009. While it’s too early to have final numbers for 2010, the district projects spending $35.07 million in electricity. Utility usage for the district for 2009 can be found at www.dallasisd.org, where it is reported yearly in compliance with Texas law. In an effort that began with the 2002 bond program to improve energy usage throughout the district, the Dallas ISD has been steadily replacing older cooling and heating systems with more efficient ones in existing schools and

S

facilities. As a part of its 2008 Bond Program, the Dallas ISD is committed to employing high performance schools criteria in the construction of the program’s 14 new schools and a number of major additions to schools. Sustainable schools are designed and built according to a code of environmental standards developed by the Texas Collaborative for High Performance Schools. The standards require the incorporation of energy efficiency, conservation, and design features that foster responsible use of resources. There is evidence that high performance sustainable schools increase student performance, foster a sense of community, improve student and staff health, reduce environmental impact and lower operating expenses. To learn more about the energy efficient features of each of the 2008 bond program new schools and improvements to existing facilities, please visit www.dallasisd-2008bond.org. In other District 5 news: 20 students and two teachers from the Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center traveled nearly 7,000 miles to South Korea as part of the international student exchange program which brought Korean students and teachers to Townview nearly two years ago. The group spent two weeks studying at the prestigious Bugil Academy in Cheonan, South Korea, approximately 60 miles south of Seoul. In preparation for their international educational experience, students immersed themselves in the South Korean culture prior to the trip. In early 2009, 20 students and two teachers from Bugil Academy visited with Townview students and their families while studying at the Dallas ISD magnet center and learning about American culture. “The Townview Exchange Program is an opportunity for our students to become global learners, expand their knowledge and appreciation for different cultures, and make friends with students in other parts of the world,” said Townview’s Executive Principal Alice Black. It’s so encouraging to see students broaden their education experience with programs such as this

and it’s also exciting to know that this will surely help students with their academic achievement. The students at Townview also communicated with their classmates in South Korea via Skype. The holiday season is upon us. Many of you will be celebrating Advent, Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, and New Years Day. There will be plays, programs, and processions proclaiming the great reasons for the time of year. It is a time of joy and festivities for so many, yet a time of depression and despair for others. As you share the holidays with your family, friends, and peers, remember the students who may not have a happy holiday season. More than 87% of our 157,000 students are economically disadvantaged. As such, their holiday season may not be as enjoyable as your and others. Visit with the principal at your neighborhood school. Ask what you, your church or organization can do to enlighten the holiday spirits for their students. Your gift will be appreciated by the students. What better gift can there be, than the gift of reading? Many Dallas ISD schools receive support from Earning by Learning, a non-profit organization providing reading incentives. This week, J.P. Starks will hold their fall reading celebrations. Next week, Harry Stone, George Washington Carver, Eladio Martinez, J.N. Ervin, N.W. Harllee and Amelia Earhart students will receive recognition. And as holiday time nears, mark your calendar and get in the mood by attending a District 5 school holiday concert and play at L.G. Pinkston High School at 7 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 9, in the school’s auditorium. District 5 sends best wishes to all for a safe, green holiday season. May you be decked with health and happiness and jolly with learning and love! I am available to meet with your organization to discuss the many successes with Dallas ISD in general, and District 5 in particular. Contact my office at 972-925-3722 for a list of schools in District 5 where you can volunteer as a tutor or mentor, or to schedule my visit. Have a safe and happy holiday season!

Texas Southern University (9-3) won its first SWAC title since 1968 reaching their primary goal for the season. Prairie View A&M University took the SWAC title last year which was its first since 1964. But this season, it was Texas Southern's turn to rise from longtime cellar dweller to Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship. The Tigers earned their first SWAC title since 1968 on Saturday behind Coach Johnnie Cole's swarming defense and backup quarterback Riko Smalls holding off Alabama State University (11-6) at Legion Field. The toughest defense in the SWAC, #2 ranked in the nation and led by SWAC defensive player of the year and SWAC Championship game defensive MVP, Dejuan Fulghum, the Tigers held the Hornets to 72 total yards and an average of just 1.7 yards per play. After the TSU offense took the opening drive behind its backup quarterback and SWAC Championship game offensive MVP, Riko Smalls, 82 yards and scored on a Martin Gilbert 2-yard touchdown run, the Tigers’ scored on Marquis Jackson's safety for an 8-0

Coach Johnnie Cole, however, believes his squad should also be considered for the black college national championship. The Tigers (9-3) were ranked fourth in the previous Sheridan Broadcasting Network black college football poll with 192 points, behind Albany State (276), Bethune-Cookman (253), and Grambling State (228), which they beat on November 11. TSU will likely have passed Grambling when the final ranking is released early this week. Texas Southern coach Johnnie Cole was named SWAC Football Coach of the Year as announced by the league office on Friday. Cole has led his Alma Mater to it’s first ever SWAC Championship game berth and the first 8-win season at Texas Southern since 2000. Cole is finishing his 3rd season at TSU with a record of 18-16 with the Tigers. He is 33-32 in his 6th season as head coach for his career. TSU Tigers have played many tough black colleges in the past with teams that had winning records than anybody in black college football. Congratulations to Texas Southern University and Coach Johnnie Cole.

ne day a man found a cocoon of a butterfly. When a small opening appeared, he sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through the tiny hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It had gotten as far as it could and could go

no farther. So the man decided to help the butterfly. He took a pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bit of the cocoon. The butterfly now emerged easily. But it had a swollen body and small, shriveled wings. The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that, at any moment, the wings would enlarge and expand, to be able to support the body, which would contract in time. Neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around with a swollen body and shrivelled wings. It never was able to fly. What the man, in his kindness and haste, did not understand was, that the restricting cocoon, and the struggle required for the butterfly to get through the tiny opening, were nature's way of forcing fluid from the body of the butterfly into its wings, so that it would be ready for flight once it achieved freedom from the cocoon. Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our life. If we were allowed to go through our life without any obstacles, it would cripple us. We would not be as strong as we could have been. And we would never be able to fly....

esus said “Man ought to always pray and not Faint”. I believe that with much prayer, we can run and not be weary, and we can walk and not faint. When prayer becomes perpetual in the life of the believer, mountains can be moved. Valleys can be brought higher, crooked places can be made PaSToR ClaRENCE straight. “Wow” hENDERSoN “Prayer is a powerful force”. And can be used against the en-emy of our souls. The devil wants to hinder our prayer life, with high mountains to block our view, and deep valleys to keep us down, and crooked places to keep us confused. We need to take advantage of the prayer formula and recipe that says; “Much prayer, much power” “Little prayer, little power” “No prayer, no power”

to a point of stability on the field and in the classroom. You just can ask a coach for any more than that. He came to Prairie View and did what we asked him to do and we will always appreciate him. He is and will always be a Panther.” Former football standout Clifford Shaw from the class of 1980 Engineering Department, had this to say, “As a matter of fact, Frazier put Panther Football back on the map and he made all Panthers proud to be a Panther again. I wish him good success in his new surroundings. I wish him good luck. He made other kids want to come to PV and play football. That’s all you can ask for. Good luck and I think he will do the same for North Carolina Central.” Clem Daniels, former Prairie View National Alumni President (1995-2005) said, “The program is in good hands and PV is still progressing. We have people in charge who will keep the program moving forward and there should be no fall off because the infrastructure is already there. I hated to see Coach Frazier leave because he is a good coach. We should be insulted that he interviewed for the University of North Texas head coaching job but didn’t really get any consideration. In the last 100 years, we have only seen one black head coach go from a black school to be a head coach at a white school and that was Turner Gill. Does this still mean that black coaches don’t have the options to cross over?” Frazier leaves Prairie View as the second most successful head coach in Prairie View history with a mark of 43-30 during his 7 year span. During his tenure, he captured the

school’s first Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship since 1964 in 2009 and has guided the Panthers to 4 consecutive winning seasons. Frazier was named the 2009 Eddie Robinson Award winner as the top coach on the football championship subdivision level. Frazier leaves behind a program that has become a consistent contender in the SWAC and on the FCS ranks. Prairie View immediately elevated Prairie View Defense Coordinator, Heishma Northern, who was named head coach in waiting this passed October will become the 31st head coach in the history of the University effective immediately. A 14 year veteran on the collegiate level, Northern has moved the Prairie View A&M defense to new heights during his 6 year tenure as the team’s defensive coordinator and has produced several All-Americans during his tenure. Athletic Director Fred Washington said, “We look forward to the opening of the 2011 season and giving Northern this opportunity.” One of the questions floating among the alumni here in North Texas is will this affect the ability to continue to raise funds for the new athletic complex that’s slated to be built in the near future? Kim Runnels, Dallas PV Alumni Chapter President, said, “The Prairie View A&M University Foundation is independent, and I hate that Coach Frazier left. However, I will continue to support the Sports Complex and am asking other alumni to not be put off by the change. Continue to support this effort because PV deserves a first class sports facility and it’s going to happen.”

ypocrisy is running rampant during this holiday season. The NCAA is getting ready to show their true colors (gangster). This week the NFL is the winner in the hypocrisy swe-

ep stakes. The last month or so the NFL has preached player safety to the point of boredom. They’re fining guys excessive amounts, and maybe that’s why some think their intentions are genuine. The word is they’re trying to stop the head injuries, and concussions. Their method for stopping this is: no helmet to helmet tackling, no hitting of defenseless

December 17, 2010

BarBerShOP talk with leON SimON receivers. No touching of the helmet under any condition that is if you play offense. These changes in my opinion could cause more injuries, as in the hit Michael Vick took earlier this season against Detroit. You remember as kids, you do something to another kid and run and jump on your porch, getting out of harms way. What happens the next day at school? Unless you’re a good fighter you have a whipping coming. Well in the NFL the Quarter back is on the porch. You can’t hit him below the knees, nor can you hit him above the shoulder. When he gets in the open field, if he slides feet first he’s still on the porch and hitting him is a no, no. The hypocrisy, the defensive team in

total all the things that can’t be done to offensive players can be done to defensive players and more often than not are encouraged. From tackle to tackle, one yard on either side of line, clipping is legal and encouraged. The defensive linemen are getting rammed with the crown of a helmet every single down. If clipping isn’t bad enough on the knees, when the QB throws the quick passes, it is physically impossible for a quarterback to throw over a man that’s taller than he is. Solution: the Offensive Lineman go at his knees to get his hands out of the air. Does any of these rules sound like you’re concerned about anyone’s health but Quarter backs and Wide Receivers? Actually I really don’t think they’re concerned about the health of anyone

www.dfwelitenews.com

except the wallets of the owners. Kansas City Chiefs Quarter back Matt Cassel had an emergency appendectomy last Wednesday and was listed as probable for the game Sunday. Does that sound like they care about his health? Wednesday Brett Favre said he couldn’t raise his arm above his head. Yet the Minnesota Viking said he was a game time decision. Most players and Doctors think a lot of the injuries in the NFL, are the results of fatigue. So the NFL will probably lock the players out next season during contract negotiations. The sticking point will be the owners want to add 2 more games to the schedule. That sounds more like greed than concern.

John A. Boehner: To Cry or Not to Cry? By: JoRDaN BlaIR

B

KATIE MAY'S BURGERS & MORE

orn in 1949 in Cincinnati, OH, John A. Boehner was born into very humble beginnings. He grew up working in his family’s business, Andy’s Café, at an early age mopping floors among other things. He was employed as a janitor at Xavier University. Many American families can relate because the majority of them start out with humble or poor beginnings, take mediocre jobs, attend college and strive to realize their dreams – just like Boehner. So Boehner’s family was a lot like most American families. One would think that Boehner could relate to the regular working class families who are still struggling to put food on the table for their families and be able to put their kids through college. Boehner has been able to move from his humble beginnings to achieve some of his goals and move on to become Speaker of the House. But why does Boehner have emotional outbreaks when he talks about certain things? The other puzzling thing is how Boehner is more concerned about tax cuts for the rich and wealthy than he is about those families who are still struggling to keep their families afloat and cannot afford to send their kids to college. Now that Boehner has “made it” he is not so much concerned about the families that are like his family was when he was growing up. He cries about children being able to achieve the American dream, but on the other hand, he fights for tax cuts for the rich and wealthy. Boehner, what are you really crying about? In the past, we’ve had lots of high profile individuals and elected officials crying. Here in Dallas several years ago, then Police Chief Terrell Bolton broke down and cried about a situation concerning the Dallas Police Department. Later that month, he was fired.

JohN a. BoEhNER On the national scene, Democratic candidate for the presidency, Hillary Clinton, while on the campaign trail cried and it was stated that she was too weak to be the president. Jimmy Swaggert cried when he confessed about his infidelity and people forgave him. President Obama cried when his grandmother passed away and people said he was showing his human side. Former President George W. Bush cried after 911 and some said it was because he made so many mistakes - but he was forgiven. Vice President Joe Biden cried for whatever reason and he’s still in office. Some people say it is okay to cry and maybe that’s okay. But Boehner seems to cry at the drop of a hat. He seems to cry when it’s not necessary or appropriate. Should we be concerned about that? It’s one thing to cry when the situation lends itself to someone needing to cry, but it’s not okay to cry in public all the time and when it seems that it’s not necessary or the appropriate time. Should we question Boehner’s stability? Does he suffer from emotional issues that could cloud his judgment? Should he be making decisions for millions of people with his emotional state of mind? If the President cried on a regular basis what would people say about him? Boehner, what are the reasons behind all of the crying?

ur church school lesson was “I am your God ”Isa. 41:8-10; 17-20. Those that know God should appreciate belong to him, knowing that they are not servants of God by ElD lloyD T. constraint but as MoRgaN willing servants. The lesson reflected that our God is a keeper of covenants even when the one he made it with is no longer alive. Israel was blessed and delivered because they were the descendants of God’s friend Abraham. We are reminded that we are saved and blessed because of someone else. Thank God for the Christ that was born on Christmas day and adopted us into his family and gave us the privilege of calling God our father. It is our hope that every believer will make it a point to say Merry “Christmas” because the unsaved world is trying to take the Christ out of Christmas. giving, this coming December 18th at 1:30 pm, at the Ideal Pentecostal Church, he and his church are hosting a Holiday Give-AWay, preparing to feed 1000 disadvantaged families and give toys to less fortunate children. Bishop Campbell is an international preacher and teacher traveling as far as Africa to declare the word of God. He has received numerous awards and recognitions for his work in the ministry, including Pastor of the year and in August of 2001 he was inducted into the Elite News’ Religious Hall of Fame. He has also received many commendations and proclamations from the House of Representatives and the Mayor of the City of Dallas. God has blessed Bishop Campbell to come a long way from his humble beginnings. And he gives all praise and glory to God because he knows that without God, he is nothing! “All I want to do is help somebody.” “God laid it on my heart to be a blessing to those who are in need, that’s the reason I do what I do. And because I have been a blessing to others, God has blessed me,” said Bishop Campbell. You can listen to Bishop Campbell on the Hour of Faith Broadcast Monday through Friday at 11:00 am on KGGR 1040am or 102.5 FM. Sunday was our Women’s annual day and our guest speaker was 1st Lady Ursula Hall of Grace Temple Fellowship church under the leadership of Rev. Keith Hall. She spoke from the theme “True Spirit of Worship” John 4:20-24 from which she defined true worship and told us that there are conditions that may be in our lives that prevent us from giving the Lord true worship. If we are going to worship we must allow the Holy Spirit to clean up our lives, help us to get rid of unforgiveness, bitterness, and hypocrisy. We were blessed as she ministered. Our youth department will present their Christmas program on Dec, 18 at 6:00 P.M they invite everyone to come and enjoy their presentation. God Bless and Merry Christmas.

Well kick back at your crib and turn on Channel 5 for NBC's New Years Eve with Carson KEvaN BRoWNINg Daly! It kicks off at 9P.M.M Dallas time!Congrats to the Dallas Mavs on their 12 game winning streak, which came to a close 103-99 this Monday at the hands of the Milwaukee Bucks...The hottest ticket in town is available tonight as Steve Nash and his Phoenix Suns come to visit the AA Center! George Clinton is suing the Black Eyed Peas for biting his hit Knee deep on their 2003 cut "Shut Up"! Clinton, who is flat broke reports my partner Bloodhound Benny, says he never JoRDI BoSToCK signed any contracts and that The Peas label released the cong anyway, even after protests!!! TA-CHING!!!! I was surprised by an awesome book this week called "Hair Loss, What To Do If It Happens To You""! The Book is by one of America's top hair experts, Jordi Bostock, who is based here in Dallas! The book is a must read and deals with hair growth health, tips, tricks, secrets and science. It's a perfect Christmas

stocking stuffer from Ms. (www.Jordibforhair.com) Bostock!!! Yo, all you young Jeezy Fans... According ot WENN Radio in Birmingham Alabama, Jeezy is suing promoter Carl Goodspeed for misrepresnting himself as the rappers booking agent and alledgedly pocketing half of a 50,000 dollar concert fee. Goodspeed is also JEEzy being sued by Ciara and Drake!!! Willow Smith will be doing a lot less "Hair Whipping" after being recently grounded by her star parents Will and Jada...Will was busted for being on social networking sites after being told no and is giving up her computer as punishment for a month. Prayers for Lil Bow-Wow and the Queen of Soul, Ms. Aretha Franklin...Reports surfaced this week that the Bow Wow had contemplated suicide, comparing his life to the fictional character Richie Rich! Of course Aretha has been diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer. The 68 year old Franklin says she is going to enjoy the time she has and it may include a final concert...
