Blessed by Reverend and Mrs. Lowery

The Dallas community was recently blessed by the visitation of Reverend and Mrs. Joseph E. Lowery from Atlanta. The veteran civil rights leader is best known for his benediction at the inaugural of President Barack Obama. At the close of the swearing in ceremony, Reverend Lowery, a Methodist minister and former president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, gave a prayer that was heard around the world. It was a fitting close to the address by the first African American to head the world’s most powerful nation. Reverend Lowery, one of the nation’s leading members of the clergy, came to Dallas for political purposes, but the throngs of people who came out to see him wanted to simply touch him or have a brief word with him. Reverend Lowery, who was also an assistant to Dr. Martin Luther King. He was one of the minds behind the genius that was Dr. King. Reverend Lowery has never been afraid of power. At the funeral of Mrs. Martin Luther King he challenged then President George W. Bush to stop the war in the Mideast and to create a nation whose major mission was the spreading of world peace. Some of those in attendance were somewhat caught by surprise that Dr. Lowery would challenge President Bush in a public forum, but Dr. Lowery has never been one to hold his piece in the face of power. Under his leadership the Southern Leadership Conference grew in membership and became a forceful voice in civil rights circles in this country. While he was president the type of bickering and infighting that has plagued the organization recently did not occur. Dr. Lowery was everyone’s president and everyone’s friend. Dr. Lowery has gained global prominence because of his preaching and his activism. While he is long in years, his preaching equals that of any young preacher in America. He has always spoken with authority and with a depth of knowledge. Dr. Lowery has always encouraged young people, telling them that they are the future of the civil rights movement and that they had to prepare themselves for the uncertainties that would certainly come. One of the reasons that Dr. Lowery has been able to stand as strong and as long as he has is due to the support of his wife and partner, Mrs. Evelyn Lowery, An activist in her own right, she once headed the women’s division of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and is a giant speaker in her own right. Whenever and wherever Dr. Lowery appears, Mrs. Lowery is there with him. During the times that he has been down she has been there to encourage him. But for him, it is questionable whether or not he would have had the success that he has experienced. They make a wonderful team who has given of themselves May 25, 2012

George Zimmerman

Now that the headlines have disappeared and the television cameras have found other stories to cover, the parents of Trayvon Martin, the young man who was fatally shot last February by an out of control neighborhood watchman in Florida, must be wondering just where all of the friends and supporters have gone. It always seems to happen that way in life. One day you are on the front page and the next you are on the last. That is the fate of the Martin family. The alleged shooter, George Zimmerman, has recently appeared in photographs with a swollen nose and wounds on the back of his head. Given the sloppiness with which the Sanford police handled the case, the wounds could have taken place at any time. In fact, Zimmerman may have inflicted the wounds on himself. He is a in a fight for a life, knowing that he was wrong in the first place and there is nothing that he will not do to prevent him-

self from going to jail. Those of us who care about Trayvon and his family should start a letter writing campaign to his mother. We should be sending her cards and flowers and gifts of money if we can afford it. Being a mother, I know that there is nothing that will repair the loss that she feels after the death of her child. But she needs to know that there are thousands of people who remain on her side, even though the international newspaper reporters and the national television cameras have left. It is the least that we can do for this mother who has suffered and will continue to suffer for years to come. Imagine, if you can, the tremendous pain that she feels. Imagine the depth of the hole that has been left in her heart. While Trayvon will never return to comfort her, she still has us. And we must do all that we can to be there for her and her entire family. There is now an attempt to taint the life of Trayvon. There are suggestions that he had illegal drugs in his system. None of that matters. The fact of the matter is that he was an innocent young man on his way home from a store with two small items that he had just purchased. The man who killed him was ordered by police to remain in his car but he went against their instructions, stalked young Trayvon and killed him. Trayvon’s mother must know that we will never forget, that she is not alone and that we, like her, will continue to pursue justice and fairness in her son’s murder.

to his passage of the “James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Act,” Garcia’s willingness to stand up to the establishment and irreverence for the status quo is apparently paying dividends in this campaign. A state chair for the Reverend Jesse Jackson’s 1984 campaign for the Presidency, Garcia has a decadeslong and strong record of pursuing civil rights and equal rights. Garcia declined to announce any upcoming endorsements or in-district appearances, stating simply, “Stay tuned and get your popcorn ready. a vote against our very values and our own best interest. Domingo Garcia is a major supporter of President Obama and has met with him on several occasions to discuss issues critical to the minority community. Domingo was instrumental in fighting the Republican Voter ID bill that was designed to turn back the clock in our community and create more barriers to vote. This bill is reminiscent of the poll tax and Jim Crow laws that suppressed the African American vote for decades and is one of many examples of Domingo Garcia’s experience as one who has always fought for equal rights and justice for all. As a coalition builder, Domingo Garcia has a history and proven track record of uniting people and we need someone like him that can fight for our communities in Washington DC. As a graduate of the Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University, Domingo has endowed a scholarship fund there to help make sure more young minorities can afford to go to law school. During his time on the Dallas City Council, he pushed against the establishment to pass single-member districts so that we could elect someone from our own community. As a State Representative, Domingo did not "go along to get along," he fought for all people of color and for our values. The balance of his career is impeccable. Elite News wholeheartedly endorses Domingo Garcia for Congress. He is the most qualified, has the most impressive record, and he is ready to lead. We know he will be a strong voice for everyone in this district.

As we daily search the scriptures, the Holy Spirit will reveal our sins to us. The word of God speaks to us in Joshua 1:8 and says “This book of law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein; for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous and then thou shalt have good success”. When sin is revealed, we must confess it specifically to God. We must declare our heart felt purpose not to repeat the sin nor to allow it to become a habit. “if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9) www.dfwelitenews.com

In 2006 Mr. Beckwith relocated his corporate location to 4155 S R L Thornton Freeway in Dallas, Texas and in 2010 because of the increasing demand for cremations added a crematory onsite at his corporate location. It's an easy 4-5 hour drive down I-45 thru Houston. I like to stay at the Holiday Inn on Sea Wall Blvd, next to Hotel Galvez the night before the trip. It has decent rates, free parking and free RT shuttle 10 minutes from the cruise docks. For those who suffer motion or sea sickness, peep the "new" Walmart on Seawall Blvd. (6A-Midnite)has dramamine(a high deck room in the ships middle is best), goggle's, sunscreen and other cruise must haves! Princess and Royal Caribbean! Sadly, only Carnival has ships scheduled this Summer. The others return during Fall and Winter. Carnival is a younger fun cruise, Princess is good, but not as structured and Disney is an awesome Disney World experience at sea! We prefer Royal Caribbean, as it always seemed a bit a bit more "refined". Both Carnival and Royal Caribbean offer 7 day itinerary's of Montego Bay/Ochi Rios (visit Bob Marley's birthplace in the mountain village of 3 Mile), Grand Cayman(Ya gotta swim with the Sting Rays)and Cozumel(Paradise Beach and Langostino Mall)!

The Mighty Travelers echo the spirit of gospel singing from their late grandfather Willie B. Bollin. The Mighty Travelers has been singing for 37 years. The group consists of four God fearing men, Kenneth Stokes, Patrick Stokes, Christopher Bollin and Rev. James Jennings Jr. and their band is held up by Marcus Sanders, Kenneth Bollin Jr. and Larry “Donnell” Richardson. The Mighty Travelers all reside here in the Dallas area, in which they are involved and always giving back to the community. Every year they sponsor a free gospel Christmas concert and all proceeds go to the needy families. These young men of God are anointed and spiritual filled. God has truly blessed them through out the years. They have been given the gift to write their own songs for their CDs. They have been blessed to release 5 CDs over the years and their latest CD entitled “In Da Mornin” which is a great success reaching out to all their fans across the nation. The Mighty Travelers recently traveled to Nashville, TN to perform on Bobby Jones Gospel, where they carried that Texas style gospel with glorious pride. The Mighty Travelers are humble young men on the battlefield for the Lord, striving to fulfill their purpose and continue to do God’s will.

Know your vote!

During each election season, we are asked to vote on candidates and positions in local races that have a direct impact on our daily lives. Many times, in our hurried schedules, we do not know the individuals or much about the positions they are seeking. Our paper prides itself on endorsing and recommending individuals that we believe are the most qualified and are in tune with the needs of our community. In the race for the 162nd civil district court of Dallas County, there are two individuals that stand out above the rest and are deserving of our endorsement and your support. Although a dual endorsement has never been done by this paper before, we believe that these two candidates are the best qualified candidates for the May 29th election that will, more than likely, result in a run off. With a crowded field of six candidates, Judge Teresa Guerra Snelson and Phyllis Lister Brown are the two distinguished candidates that this paper is proud to endorse. Judge Teresa Guerra Snelson has been licensed for 21 years, has been board certified for 14 years and is currently an associate civil court judge in Dallas County, a position she has held for the last 8 years. A first generation American of Mexican descent, she has always given back to her community and is the immediate past president of the Dallas Hispanic Bar Association. Judge Teresa Guerra Snelson has the most relevant experience as it pertains to the 162nd civil district court. Phyllis Lister Brown has been licensed for 25 years, has been a litigation attorney for 12 years and most recently served as a city of Dallas municipal court judge for the last 10 years. A Dallas native, she too gives back to her community and is the current foundation chair of the J.L. Turner Legal Association. Phyllis Lister Brown’s judicial experience, although different from a civil district court judge, should not be discounted. Maricela Moore, does not believe that experience is relevant. As an attorney that has been licensed only ten years with limited trial experience, one would question the thought process of how she came to that conclusion. Also left to question is the fact that this candidate has legally changed her name, a fact that is public record, to run for the 162nd civil district court bench. Was her prior

name not good enough or is she trying to appeal to a certain group of people? Is it deceptive or deceitful that we do not really know this candidate because of her personal agenda? Is she going to put her self-serving ambition ahead of the needs of our community if elected? Although Baltasar Cruz, has been licensed for 22 years and has a wide legal ban-width, he lacks the judicial experience. Additionally, this is his fourth attempt at elected office and many have viewed him has unelectable. David Diaz, has been licensed for 13 years and has litigation experience, however, he too lacks the judicial experience. Not much is known of Scot Perry, a personal injury lawyer, who has been virtually non-existent throughout this campaign process. It is important to know who you are voting for and what they stand for. Integrity matters. Experience matters. Quality matters. Your vote matters. It is our responsibility to endorse candidates whom we believe feel the same. We are proud to endorse Judge Teresa Guerra Snelson and Phyllis Lister Brown for judge of the 162nd civil district court.

97.9 the Beat

DUB Car Show

By Samantha Grandberry AIDS HEALTH CAR FOUNDATION

On Sunday, May 20th, from LA to NYC, South Florida to Dallas, AHF hosted four coast-to-coast “Parties with a Purpose.” In Dallas/Ft. Worth, The AIDS Healthcare Foundation’s sponsorship of Radio One’s 97.9 The Beat DUB Car Show and Concert was especially important becauseDallas currently ranks as the number one city in the State of Texas for new incidence of HIV/AIDS. The highest rates of NEW infections occur in 13-24 year olds. The key to helping end new transmissions is prevention and access. AHF has speciallydesigned a 70-foot long, 18 wheel ‘Condom Nation’ big rig truck currently traveling across the country giving out 10 million condoms to those who cannot afford retail priced condoms and who are not near services that give them out freely. In Fort Worth and Dallas, the Condom Nation Tour distributed over a quarter million condoms to thousands of enthusiastic recipients. One young man exPage Page10 10

claimed, "Man this is great, I can't afford condoms, and that's why I have two kids!" Together with eight local community partner agencies led by John Reed of Ft. Worth's AIDS Outreach Center and Ed "Mr. Prevention" Jones and Jason Gutierrez of AIDS ARMS in Dallas, The AIDS Healthcare Foundation’s Condom Nation Tour tested over 800 people over 3 days, and identified 5 positive individualswho will now be able to receive access to thelife saving care, counseling, and medication they need to live a healthy life. The AIDS Healthcare Foundation is the largest provider of HIV Medical Services in the country. In partnership with the AIDS Outreach Center in Ft. Worth they are opening a beautiful new free healthcare center located at 400 Beach Street, as well as a not-for-profit pharmacy that can fill almost any prescription and accepts most insurance plans. 96 cents of every prescription filled goes directly to the care and treatment of people living with HIV/AIDS right here in the Dallas/Ft. Worth community.

Larry Taylor - Committed to Service C E L E B R A t i N G

On any given Sunday Morning, Larry Taylor can be found in the sanctuary of Ervay Cedar Baptist Church, where he is a deacon who spends much of his time counseling young people and visiting the sick and shut in. “I have always felt a calling on my life to service,” said Taylor, a lawyer and former investment banker who is a candidate for a seat in the Texas legislature, running in District 110. “It began when I was a small boy and has continued to grip my life. “I love serving and giving to others. It is something that my parents instilled in my sister and me.” Taylor, a graduate of the Texas Southern Law School, is a partner at the Johnny Cochran Law Firm. He is a very good courtroom attorney according to those who have worked with and against him. And he is honest with his clients. “I decided to attend law school after being an investment banker. “I wanted to help people with their legal issues and I wanted to see them treatly fairly. Too many people do not understand our legal system and my effort has been to make it clear for them. If a client does not have money I will work something out with them. That is a part of my calling. daughter, Taylor says that his family is very important to him. “I want to see my children become productive adults,” he said. “My wife, Nicole, and I spend time around the dinner table with our children, asking them questions, giving them the opportunity to express themselves and suggesting to them that they have to begin to prepare themselves for the future. While a law student, Taylor was selected to work in the office of the speaker of the Texas Legislature. There he learned the rigors of legislation and befriended many of the peo-

ple who are still members of the law making body. “I have an existing relationship with many members of the legislature,” said Taylor who credits his pastor, Reverend T. L. Brown and his parents, Veronica and Larry Sr. with helping to mold his life. “I will not have to have on the job training if the voters elect me. I know the rules of the game.” Taylor says that he plans to start monthly youth academies in his district to help young people with math, science, engineering and technology. “I plan to start after-school programs that will help our young people,” he said. “It is something that is desperately needed. I believe that we have to help young people to develop the skills that are desperately needed for the future.” While director of outreach for Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson, Taylor worked with many business and civic groups. “I know their concerns and will be there to assist them grow their companies and improve their communities.” “As a legislator, I want to be a partner of the people,” he said. “I want them to see me on a weekly basis. I want to know that I am constantly working in their best interest.”

Toliver’s Talents

The Metroplex’s Finest 5 2

Y E A R S

By Mark A. Toliver ii Elite News Sports Writer

Wow!! This was a great year of sports for our Metroplex. This sports season the Metroplex saw first time state champions, we saw teams repeat as state champion. We saw state titles in football, basketball, and track. This year in sports was very exciting in every sport. We watched as South Lake Carroll won another state championship in football. Southlake held off a very good Skyline team and went on to show that it's some serious football played in DFW. We saw Flower Mound Marcus win back to back state championships in basketball. Marcus Smart was one of the most exciting athletes I've seen since Byron Eaton. Smarts will to win was something to watch and you could tell he's a winner!!

The Kimball Knights won back to back state championships in basketball. Senior Shanno Lilly showed eveybody that basketball is not just a big mans game. Lilly showed everybody that he was one of the nations top shooting guards. Lilly won back to back MVP awards and put Kimball on the map as a basketball power house. The Duncanville girls basketball team won the State title and continued to prove to be a national power. These lady's were fast, strong, and powerful. This years Panther team just seemed to be on a mission, and the mission was accomplished. The Lancaster track teams girls and boys won state titles in track and field and continued to be the measuring stick for high school track programs. The Tigers are second to none when it comes to track! The boys re-

O F

ally surprised me, these young men stepped up this game and put together an impressive championship season. I have always liked to see the lady Tigers compete. These young ladies have put style and flare into track. The lady Tigers style is as common to track as winning state title . DeSoto Eagles won their first ever boys state title, and the DeSoto Lady Eagles won back to back state titles. The DeSoto boys had one of the best relay teams in the history of track and field. The sprint relay was great to watch and this years team was full of great talent. The lady Eagle's just showed the Metroplex how to win track meets. The Lady Eagles won several meets this season by really large point margins. The Lady Eagles were great to watch and proved that they are true champions.Having this much success in sports does not surprise me. I have always enjoyed comparing talent from state to state. The conversation has always been, which state has the most talent, which state has

Obituaries In October 1979, principle Fredrick Todd, Sr. asked his student body to tell their parents what South Oak Cliff would be like in the future. He stated that the school would become great and upon entering the building you would see “Education in Action he Stated ’94 Changing Image” will come. November 1983, principle Fredrick Todd, Sr. has seen the image of his school change and continued his challenge for the 80’s. Dr. Todd, Sr. who is responsible for the leadership and accountability of 2,462 students and a staff of 159, admonishes that we must accomplish a designated task: TABS and TAPS test scores would improve. Students would two to three hours per night of homework. They must pass English and Math to move on to the next course other-wise they will be retained. He stated “The Only Way to Read is to READ”. You can’t get a grade on potential, you must perform! Do not attempt to hide behind your inadequacies”! Dr. Todd informed students and parents that all instructors will be on grade level. Power-writing, note taking, outlining etc. will be part of all student programs. He will expect to see books in hands everyday when you leave school. r, Fredrick Todd, Sr. Principle.
