Behind The Wheel With THE KING (Arthur Prayther)
2011 NISSAN MURANO SL FWD Austin, Texas-while making four trips to the capitol city during the past month we had an excellent opportunity to see how vehicles perform on the road. The 2011 Nissan Murano lived up to its billing and then some during our week long test. Classified as a Premium crafted Crossover, the Murano provided plenty of room for the full-size four adults that made the trip. With more than average rear seat room the Murano proved to be very comfortable and smooth riding to say the least. It all starts with a 3.5 Liter DOHC V6 engine that produces 260 horsepower with intelligent Xtronic CVT and continuously variable transmission. This vehicle also lived up to its claim of 18 miles per gallon in the city and 23 miles per gallon on the highway. Vehicle speed-sensitive power and rack and pinion steering adds to what is already a wonderful handling vehicle. With
front and rear stabilizer bars this front wheel drive vehicle certainly performs more like a sports sedan. The overall ride is enhanced by four-wheel independent suspension and fourwheel power vented disc brakes makes stopping the vehicle as much fun as driving it. Power rolls smoothly to the ground on P235/65R18” All season tires wrapped neatly around a set of 18 inch aluminum allow wheels with center caps. We are talking about good smooth rolling down the road and good looking as well. Safety is a pretty good premium for the Murano as well with Nissan advanced air bag system with seat mounted bags for both driver and front passenger. Passenger side impact supplemental air bags as well as roofmounted curtain side-impact supplemental air bags help to build a very safe cabin for all passengers. All this is rounded off with supplemental air bags
for front and rear seat outboard occupant head protection with rollover sensor and active head restraints. All this is elevated by a full two-part sun roof allowing light or open air riding pleasure for rear seat passengers. The driver is greeted by an eight-way power seat with power lumbar support. Front passenger gets a four-way power front seat and keep in mind both are heated. A 60/40 combination for rear seat with fold-flat rear seatback with power return with all seats leather appointed adding to the luxury of the vehicle.
for this vehicle. No trip is complete without your favorite sounds and in this case a Bose Audio system AM/FM/CD with nine speakers and dual speaker subwoofer. The system is complete with Auxiliary audio/video inputs inside center console and XM satellite radio along with USB with interface system for iPod Bluetooth hands free phone system, all with steering wheel controls. To close out the interior look the four cup holders, Nissan Intelligent Key with push bottom
ignition and keyless entry with (two fobs and push bottom door request switch for front doors and trunk. With our test model only carpeted floor mats was optional, everything else was standard and our price came in at only $36,435. Not bad to say the least. Please allow me to add the final assembly point for the Nissan Murano is Los Angeles, California giving it a true American feel.
Other interior features are comfort tilt/telescopic leather wrapped steering wheel and shift knob and yes the steering wheel is heated for those cold days also. You might say Nissan has thought of just about everything

MUSTANG CONVERTIBLE GALLOPING OPEN AIR FUN By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Austin, Texas-Making the trip to the capitol city 4 times in the last 5 weeks we took a stroll down memory lane when we took the Mustang Convertible for a ride. Yes my mind goes back to the day John Henry Allen drove his brand new Mustang up to the church and we all gathered around to look at it. It just so happen that was back in 1964 when the mid-year model changed the course of sport car history in America. Now many years later the all new 2011 Ford Mustangs is offering some of the world’s greatest open air galloping. All the way to Austin for the H.U. B. Form by the Texas Lottery Commission we used the V6 Mustang to make this trip.

This engine is mated to a fun to shift 6-speed manual that really made you feel like you were at the Indy 500. Making a stop to grab a bit in Elgin at Myers B-B-Que we made the trip in record time and still got the numbers the Mustang promised. The Kona Blue Metallic color turned some heads and the Saddle leather interior made for a great color scheme. The Black retractable roof added to the flare of the vehicle. When you are standing behind the vehicle you can see the stainless steel dual exhaust tips, rear deck-lid spoiler and led sequential tail lamps. Inside you find leather trimmed sport seats with 6-way power for driver and 2-way front passenger. The center console had an armrest, plus there is an ambient lighting message center. The leather wrapped steering wheel makes for swift and steady curing maneuvers complete with cruise control and comfort tilt. The sounds come from Shaker 500 Audio system with

THE 2011 VOLVO S60 T6 AWD TONS OF DRIVING FUN By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View The all-new Volvo S60 T6 AWD vehicle is certainly a lot of driving fun. A powerful 300 horse powered 3.0 Liter turbocharged 6-cylinder engine with DOHC continuous variable valve timing and twin scroll turbocharger. This engine cranks out 300 horses at 5600 RPM and 325 lbs. per foot of torque at 2100 RPM. Despite its powerful approach the vehicle still qualifies for ULEV (Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle) and manages to get 18 miles per gallon in the city and 26 miles per gallon on the highway. The engine is mated to a 6speed automatic (Geartronic) transmission with adaptive shift logic and all wheel drive with instant traction. The handling is super with the dynamic chassis with advance stability control, corner traction control through torque vectoring and speed sensitive steering with driver selectable setting. Front independent Strut suspension with anti-roll bat and anti-dive geometry. That’s one thing we want to talk a bit about, because if you recall in the old days when you applied the brakes hard the vehicle’s nose dive was notable but as the years went by automakers were able to reduce the amount of nose dive when braking hard. A fully independent rear Multi-link suspension coupled with 4-wheel power assisted and ventilated disc brakes with anti-locking (ABS), electronic brake distribution (EBD), electronic brake assis-
tance (EBA) and Ready alert brakes (RAB) with an emergency brake light. All this rolls to the pavement on 18 inch alloy wheels wrapped by all season tires. Inside the new Volvo you are treated to the Sweden layout you come to expect and the new Volvo Sensus with integrated 7inch color LCD monitor stands out along with leather upholstery seating surfaces with sport seats both front and rear. A sporty looking Shimmer graphite aluminum inlays adds to the overall interior outlook.

Out and About with John Engel PATRIOT GUARD RIDERS They come from all over Southeast Texas. They are men and women, some that ride motorcycles and others that do not. Many are veterans but others did not serve. They came together for one reason. Their mission statement is “Standing for those that stood for us.” They are the Patriot Guard Riders (PGR). When invited by the family, they attend the funerals of fallen American heroes. The show respect for the heroes, their families and their communities. Most important, they shield the families and friends from protestors that may disrupt the mourning of their loss. This is done through legal and nonviolent means. All rides and events are referred to as missions as a ride or run just does not fully grasp the magnitude of the job at hand. Some events are merely showing up to grant support to the fami-
home.
lies while others involve protecting the loved ones from unwanted interruptions.
PATRIOT GUARD RIDERS REMEMBERING OUR FALLEN HEROES
Although a very solemn occasion, the PGR try to make their troops departure as positive and joyous as possible. The soldiers honored in this way will carry the feeling of the respect given then through their entire tour.
The Patriot Guard does not contact families, but will respond when asked to help. The First Amendment of our Constitution’s Bill of Rights grants us the right of free speech. However, this right does not permit disturbing a family at the most tragic moment of their lives. On May 29, 2006 President George W. Bush passed the “Respect for America’s Fallen Heroes Act” which prohibits protests within 300 feet of a federal cemetery 60 minutes before until 60 minutes after a funeral. This act was passed to allow families the privacy to say goodbye without the interruption of protesters.
All funds raised by the PGR go to the Fallen Warrior’s Scholarship Fund. This fund grants scholarships to the families of our fallen heroes. One year scholarships are of a minimum of $2000 and payable directly to accredited educational and technical institutions.
Whether you agree with our involvement in the war or disagree, these brave men volunteered to fight for their country. The family and friends have a right to grieve their loss without the minority of people that wish to disrupt these services.
To request a mission, contact Deputy State Caption KP McNeal at kpmcneal@bechtel.com or Assistant Deputy State Captain Bobby Stroka at bstroka@sbcglobal.netbstroka@sbcglobal.net . As much advanced notice as possible is requested to insure a better turnout by the PGR members. Missions to honor a Fallen Hero will be given priority over welcome home and send offs.
In addition to protecting families from protesters, the Patriot Guard Riders has other goals. One is the Help on the Home Front (HOTH). HOTH is involved in troop welcome home celebrations and troop sendoffs. Imagine the feeling a returning solider must experience when a group of PGR members are waiting at the gate when the get off the plane then escort them
Page 6
Other missions include honoring requests for rolling tributes to various veteran related functions. Recently the PGR was asked to escort a bus of runners participating in the “Impact a Hero” run in Sugarland. The purpose of this event is to lend emotional support to our troops overseas.
If you are interested in joining or assisting the Patriot guard Riders, first contact the national web site at www.patriotguard.org. You will need to sign up and completed a liability waiver. To get on the email list for missions, then go to the local web site at
www.setexaspgr.org. Before you do this, however, go to Youtube and type “Patriot Guard Riders” in the search box. View a couple of the videos of the funeral rides and other events. Your heart will tell you if the PGR is right for you. REMEMBERI G OUR FALLE HEROES
Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May Formerly known as Decoration Day, which was first recorded to have been observed by Freedmen (freed enslaved southern blacks) in Charleston, South Carolina in 1865, at the Washington Race Course, to remember the fallen Union soldiers of the Civil War. The recognition of the fallen victims was then enacted under the name Memorial Day by an organization of Union veterans the Grand Army of the Republic to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War Over time, it was extended after World War 1 to honor all Americans who have died in all wars. Now known as Memorial Day, it is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Memorial Day often marks the start of the summer vacation season, and Labor Day its end. (Source: Wikipedia) I hope everyone took a few minutes from their picnic, bar-b-que or family gathereing on this Monday to remember that we have the right to enjoy the freedoms granted to us. This is because our brave men and women paid the ultimate price so we can be free. When you see someone protesting and you do not agree with his cause, remember that he or she has that
right because we live in a land that we are guarnteed the right of free speech. On the Korean War Memorial in Washington, DC, the words “Freedom Is Not Free” are etched in the black granite wall. If you take a minute to realize how deep the meaning of those four words are you will know why we celebrate Memorial Day. Everyone reading these words has a Father, Mother, Brother, Sister, Child, Aunt, Uncle oe friend that served our country. Some of these people laid down their life so we may enjoy the freedoms granted to us by our Constitution. I spent part of my Memorial Day in Richmond, Texas. In between the new and old City Hall buildings is a memorial wall that holds the names of soliders that laid down their lives for their country. Untel recently there was only one wall of names. Because of the wars in Iraq and Afganastan, another wall had to be added. A brief ceremony was held in which several groups including American Legion Posts, Veterens of Foreign War Posts and Disable Veterans groups presented wreaths to the wall. A short speech by the County Judge was followed by a 21 gun salute, a piper playing Amazing Grace on hig bag pipes and TAPS blown on a bugle. This was a breif but very moving ceremony. In the crowd were veterans of World II, Korea and Viet Nam. Some were unable to walk on their own. It was a moving and solenm occasion. I hope everyone enjoyed this day and we all took a few minutes to remember why this occasion is special.

THIS YOU NEED TO KNOW By Paris Eley
COMPASSION FATIGUE The word compassion is derived from the Latin terms com+passus, loosely translated to mean “suffer with; it is the emotional ability to identify with the condition of another, particularly in matters of adversity and ill fortune, and it is widely regarded as a virtue of human nature. Fatigue, simply put, is tiredness. That these two words have come to be juxtaposed in our social and political dialog is an indication of the dire economic conditions of the day. The term compassion fatigue is used to describe the weariness that afflicts those who are overwhelmed by the need to provide
assistance to others; to offer help in the face of calamity or poverty. Pick from a number of global locations and we find the need to provide humanitarian aid in the form of food, cash, clothing, medicine, and other vital goods; basic supplies necessary to ease suffering. The conditions may be the result of a caprice in nature or the sinister calculations of men, the end result is always the threat that some people will suffer horribly if we fail to act. I think more of us would rather help our fellow humans than choose to ignore them. That is why it is troubling to me when I hear talk of compassion fatigue. Yet, it is understandable that in hard times as the working peo-
ple of our country see their buying power shrink, they question the costs associated with entitlement, social, and poverty programs. There are many scriptural texts advising against growing weary in well-doing well doing, and suggesting reward in perseverance. (Galatians 6:9 comes to mind). Still, it is also reasonable that people should want others to accept a measure of responsibility for their care and feeding, particularly in the absence of
any mental or physical infirmity that prevents them from doing so. The leaders of our own national government are, rightfully in my opinion, gearing up for national debate on spending, personal responsibility and the role of government in the lives of our citizens. I think that it is an excellent opportunity for teachers, students and citizens who wished to be informed to learn about the intersection between social studies and civics. The distribution of funds and servic-
Page 9
es for education, medicine, and services will have more to say about our stated national values than a long or eloquent speech by any appointed or elected official. The discussion may bring into sharp relief the difference between the meanings of the words cost and value when considering financial expenditures. I hope that every teacher will encourage the students to track the bills that spend money on programs and the bills that reduce funds.

A KING-SIZE MOVER AND SHAKER: RITHANETT CARTER By Dr. Victor Keys A King-Size View Our King-Size Mover and Shaker for the month of June is Rithanett Carter. I have known Ms. Carter even before she was Rithanett. I watched her grow up and become a very skilled and professional barber. She is always courteous, kind and friendly to everyone she meets. Ms. Carter stated that growing up in a family of barbers, motivated her to take a trade that would help her take care of herself and achieve higher goals. One of her goals was to become an instructor and assist young men and women to become certified barbers. Therefore, when she had an opportunity to teach at the Acres Home Barber College, she took advantage of it and became a faculty member.
For several years, she helped many young barbers get their certification and learn what it takes to be a great barber. Ms. Carter also gives back each year to different communities in the Houston area. Around the middle of August, you can see Ms. Carter cutting and styling the hair of many school aged children who can not afford a hair cut for the upcoming school year. Ms. Carter is also willing to assist anyone in getting a better understanding of their Bible. It is such a joy to see Ms. Carter and to be around her, she is always kind, the climate is always warm, and you are sure to get a very good hair cut at a reasonable price. WHAT IS TRUTH: “SANCTIFY THEM THROUGH THY TRUTH: THY WORD IS TRUTH.” What is Truth? John 17:17 “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy Word is truth.” Please get your Bibles and follow this study! Tithing...has it ever been authorized by Jesus Christ, through his Apostles, to be observed by Christians? Dear reader, it is again a privilege and I hope, a blessing, to be able to share some scriptural truths with you. Let us now get to this month’s study, “Tithing”. In the religious world today, we believe there are many things taught and practiced that are not authorized by Jesus Christ through his Apostles. We believe that tithing is one of them. The Apostle Paul wrote to The Church in Thessalonica, to “Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.” (1Thes.5:21). All things must be proven [to test, try, examine, to approve and to allow] by Christ, by those proclaiming to be Christians. After proving it, if it is good according to Christ and or his Apostles, keep it, teach it, practice it. God left instructions on how to be right [righteous] with Him, that all must hear his only begotten Son, and Him only (Matt.17:1-8; 1John- 4:9). We must remember that Jesus, as he prayed to his Father in heaven, also left instructions on how to believe on him and that is through the Apostle’s words (John 17:20 “Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; 21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.”) We find no command, custom nor instructions on tithing, given by the apostles; given to the Church that Christ is building. We do find the customs, commands and instructions of tithing given to those that were under the Old Law. These instructions were given by God through Moses, for The Law was given by Moses (John 1:17). As you read, you will see these were specific instructions, specific commands given to a specific People. When the people of God, under Moses, obeyed the commandment of tithing, this made them right [righteous] with God. When reading, carefully note the definitions and also note to whom and by whom this was given. Note the precise instructions of tithing, given to those under The Old Law. Definition:(#1)-Tithe- (4643) ma` aser -a tenth part b) a tithe, a payment of a tenth part Lev 27:30 And all the (#1)tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, is the LORD’s: it is holy unto the LORD. (KJV)
Lev 27:32 And concerning the (#1)tithe of the herd, or of the flock, even of whatsoever passeth under the rod, the tenth shall be holy unto the LORD. (KJV) um 18:24 But the (#1)tithes of the children of Israel, which they offer as an heave offering unto the LORD, I have given to the Levites to inherit: therefore I have said unto them, Among the children of Israel they shall have no inheritance. 25 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 26 Thus speak unto the Levites, and say unto them, When ye take of the children of Israel the (#1)tithes which I have given you from them for your inheritance, then ye shall offer up an heave offering of it for the LORD, even a tenth part of the (#1)tithe. Deut 14:22 Thou shalt truly (#1)tithe all the increase of thy seed, that the field bringeth forth year by year. 23 And thou shalt eat before the LORD thy God, in the place which he shall choose to place his name there, the (#1)tithe of thy corn, of thy wine, and of thine oil, and the firstlings of thy herds and of thy flocks; that thou mayest learn to fear the LORD thy God always. (read also Deut 12:17) (KJV) Deut 26:12 When thou hast made an end of (#1)tithing all the (#1)tithes of thine increase the third year, which is the year of (#1)tithing, and hast given it unto the Levite, the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, that they may eat within thy gates, and be filled; (KJV) 2 Chr 31:5 And as soon as the commandment came abroad, the children of Israel brought in abundance the firstfruits of corn, wine, and oil, and honey, and of all the increase of the fields; and the (#1)tithe of all things brought they in abundantly. 6 And concerning the children of Israel and Judah, that dwelt in the cities of Judah, they also brought in the (#1)tithe of oxen and sheep, and the (#1)tithe of holy things which were consecrated unto the LORD their God, and laid them by heaps. (KJV) Definition: (#2)Tithe - (6237) `asar- to tithe, to take the tenth part of, to give a tithe, to take a tithe eh 10:37 And that we should bring the firstfruits of our dough, and our offerings, and the fruit of all manner of trees, of wine and of oil, unto the priests, to the chambers of the house of our God; and the (#2)tithes of our ground unto the Levites, that the same Levites might have the (#2)tithes in all the cities of our tillage. 38 And the priest the son of Aaron shall be with the
Levites, when the Levites take (#2)tithes: and the Levites shall bring up the (#2)tithe of the (#2)tithes unto the house of our God, to the chambers, into the treasure house. (see also Gen 28:22; 1 Sam 8:15 & 17) (KJV) If you have read carefully, hopefully you noticed that the Apostles, Christians, or the Church that Christ is building are not mentioned once in the previous scriptures. This is because they cannot be found anywhere in The Old Testament. So then the commandment to observe tithing, has never been given to those of the Church that Christ is building (Matt.16:1318; Acts 2:47); those that have been buried with Christ, and have put on Christ in baptism (Gal.3:26-29) [Christians]. Even in the New Testament scriptures given below, if read carefully, you will find the same results. You will find the Lord Jesus teaching the unbelieving Jews, trying to convert them into Christianity. You will also find references to the Old Law, but nothing to the Church that Christ is building. Definition: (#3) Tithe- (586) apodekatoo-1) to give, to pay a tithe of anything 2) to receive one-tenth from anyone Matt 23:23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay (#3)tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. (KJV) Luke 11:42 But woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye (#3)tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass over judgment and the love of God: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. (KJV) Luke 18:11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. 12 I fast twice in the week, I give (#3)tithes of all that I possess. 13 And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.(KJV) Heb 7:5 And verily they that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a commandment to take (#3)tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brethren, though they come out of the loins of
Abraham:(KJV) Definition: (#4) Tithe - (1181) dekate- a tenth part of anything, a tithe a) the tenth party of booty taken from an enemy b) the tithes of fruits of the earth and of flocks, which by the Law of Moses were presented to the Levites in the congregation of Israel (#5) Tithe - (1183) dekatoo (dek-at-o’-o); from 1181; to tithe, i.e. to give or take a tenth: KJV— pay (receive) tithes.1) to exact or receive the tenth part Heb 7:8 And here men that die receive (#4) tithes; but there he receiveth them, of whom it is witnessed that he liveth. 9 And as I may so say, Levi also, who receiveth (#4) tithes, payed (#5) tithes in Abraham.(KJV) Remember, Christ Jesus left instructions to his Apostles for all things that are to be observed, by the Church that he is building. The blueprint is in the apostle’s doctrine, which is in New Testament scriptures. This is also the one church that is HIS body and the one that he is the HEAD of. The Apostles being guided by The Holy Ghost; “the Comforter” passed these instructions on to us in THEIR writings. We must never forget the order of things, please read! Matt 16:16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. 17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. 18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.(KJV) Matt 17:1 And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart, 2 And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light. 3 And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him. 4 Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three (1)tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. 5 While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him. 6 And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid. 7 And Jesus came and touched them, and said, Arise, and be not afraid. 8 And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only.(KJV)
Definition: (1)three tabernacles 4633 skene-2) used of that wellknown movable temple of God after the pattern of which the temple at Jerusalem was built….. Matt 28:16 Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them. 17 And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted. 18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. 19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.KJV) 1 Cor 11:1 Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ. 2 Now I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you. 3 But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.(KJV) Eph 1:20 Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, 21 Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: 22 And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, 23 Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.(KJV) Col 1:14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: 15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: 16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the (1)preeminence. 19 For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell; 20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.(KJV)

WHAT IS TRUTH: “SANCTIFY THEM THROUGH THY TRUTH: THY WORD IS TRUTH.” Definition:(1) the preeminence 4409 proteuo (prote-yoo’-o); from 4413; to be first (in rank or influence) , to hold the first place: KJV— have the preeminence…..4413 protos (pro’-tos); contracted superlative of 4253; foremost (in time, place, order or importance), 1) first in time or place; in any succession of things or persons 2) first in rank a) influence, honor b) chief c) principal 3) first, at the first: KJV— before, beginning, best, chief (-est), first (of all), former. As we like to say, Christ, Christ, Christ, Christ, Christ through his Apostles (John 17:14-21), nothing more, nothing less, NO ONE ELSE, according to The Father which is in HEAVEN! (Matt.17:1-8; 28:16-20; John 8:54-59; Eph.1:20-23; Col.1:1420 etc.) 2 Pet 3:2 That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour: 3 Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,(KJV) I Jn 4:5 They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them. 6 We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error. (KJV) We believe it is now scripturally clear, that Jesus did not leave any instructions or commands of tithing to his body, the Church. This being true, why are so many in the religious world today, teaching and demanding such? Christians must continue steadfastly in the Apostles’ doctrine just as those Christians before us (read Acts2:41-42). Do we error because we know not the scriptures, nor the power of God (Matt.22:29), or is it because of greed that one would teach in error tithing [a tenth part] or pledging? Is merchandise made of members, because of the love of money, (read 2Pet.2:1-9)? The man of God must flee these things, according to the Apostle Paul, as he taught the young minister Timothy (please read, 1Tim.6:3-21). Acts 2:41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. 42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.(KJV) 2 Pet 2:3 And through (1)covetousness shall they with (2)feigned words make (3)merchandise of you: whose judg-
ment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not. (please get your bible and read verses 1 thru 9) (KJV) Definitions:(1) covetousness 4124 pleonexia (pleh-on-ex-ee’ah); from 4123; avarice, i.e. (by implication) fraudulency, extortion: KJV— covetous (-ness) practices, greediness.greedy desire to have more (2) feigned words-4112 plastos (plas-tos’); from 4111; moulded, i.e. (by implication) artificial or (figuratively) fictitious (false): KJV— feigned. (3) merchandise 1710 emporeuomai- to use a person or a thing for gain 1 Tim 6:10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. 11 But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. (please get your bible and read verses 3 thru 21)(KJV) If we in the religious world today are going to teach in error (tithing), let us at least teach it as God in the Old Law commanded it. Let us accept in the treasury, along with money: seed, sheep, herbs, honey, oxen, mint, etc. We believe the point is understood. Now, let us read the instructions and commandments of finance given to the Church by Christ. These are given by Jesus Christ, the one that grace and truth came by (John1:17). Handed down to the Apostles, and then to us, and as we observe [obey] them, it will make Christians right [righteous] with God, as we abide in the Apostles’ Doctrine. Let us start first with the teaching of the Apostle Paul, in Acts the 20th chapter, as he was guided by The Holy Spirit. We believe that Acts the 20th chapter, verses: 31-35 sets the tone of a Christian’s life and finances. Contrary to what most teach, it is a humble life of necessities. This life is financed by working with our hands to support our needs, to support the weak and needy saints, and to give to the poor. This is for all that proclaim to be Christians. The apostle Paul did it and according to scripture, we are to follow him and the other Apostles’, as they followed Christ (1Cor.11:1-2). Please read! Acts 18:1 After these things Paul departed from Athens, and came to Corinth; 2 And found a certain Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus, lately come from Italy, with his wife Priscilla; (because that Claudius had commanded all Jews to depart from Rome:) and came unto them. 3 And because he was of the same craft, he abode with them,
and wrought: for by their occupation they were tentmakers.(KJV) Acts 20:31 Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears. 32 And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified. 33 I have coveted no man’s silver, or gold, or apparel. 34 Yea, ye yourselves know, that these hands have ministered unto my necessities, and to them that were with me. 35 I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive. (Please read also 1Cor.4:11-12, Eph.4:28) Rom 12:9 Let love be (1)without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good. 10 Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another; 11 Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord; 12 Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer; 13 (2)Distributing to the (3)necessity of (4)saints; given to hospitality.(KJV) Definitions:(1)without dissimulation-505 anupokritos (an-oopok’-ree-tos); from 1 (as a negative particle) and a presumed derivative of 5271; undissembled, i.e. sincere: KJV— without dissimulation (hypocrisy), unfeigned. (2)Distributing to2841 koinoneo (koy-no-neh’-o); from 2844; to share with others (objectively or subjectively): KJV— communicate, distribute, be partaker. (3)necessity5532 chreia (khri’-ah); from the base of 5530 or 5534; employment, i.e. an affair; also (by implication) occasion, demand, requirement or destitution: KJV— business, lack, necessary (-ity), need (-ful), use, want. (4)saints-40 hagios (hag’-eeos); from hagos (an awful thing) [compare 53, 2282]; sacred (physically, pure, morally blameless or religious, ceremonially, consecrated): KJV— (most) holy (one, thing), saint. As you have read and hopefully will continue to read the set of scriptures given below, you will find the purpose and order of the collection, given to the Church, by Christ, through the apostle Paul. This is the collection that is to be observed by Christians, thereby making them right [righteous] with God; not tithing, (the command Moses gave to the Israelites). The purpose of this collection is for the poor and needy saints, under
New Testament rule. Tithes were given by the Israelites to the Levites for the poor and needy, under Old Testament rule, for they had no inheritance (Num.18:24-26). We will also see just how precise the instructions are to Christians, in the commandment of giving. They will also manifest the abuse that is caused when religious leaders teach in error, tithing and or pledging. Sure, those that have obeyed the scriptural form of doctrine (Rom.6:17), and have been buried with Christ, and have put on Christ in Baptism, are instructed to give. So giving must be taught, but it must be taught and practiced by New Testament scriptures. Please read carefully the instructions given by the Lord through the apostle Paul. Please note the definitions. 1 Cor 16:1 Now concerning the (1)collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye. 2 Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come. 3 And when I come, whomsoever ye shall approve by your letters, them will I send to bring your liberality unto Jerusalem. (Please read also Acts11:28-30, Rom.15:2526, Galatians 2:10) (KJV) Definition: (1)Collection-3048 logia-a collection; used of money gathered for the relief of the poor. In the collection for the saints, Christians must first have a willing mind, and it must be according to what they have, not according to what they have not. There are many struggling to pay their bills, because of many legitimate reasons such as: illnesses, medicine, fixed incomes, etc. So, to have religious leaders ask for their checks or check stubs, to impose the error of a tenth part of their earnings, or even a “pledge”, is abuse and is not according to New Testament instructions. We hope you will also note, after careful reading, that one is not to be burdened while the other is eased; that there must be equality. *It seems fair to say, one might struggle with having a willing mind, or not giving grudgingly, especially, when the ones that are imposing this error on them, are: dressing better, living better, and riding around better than they are. There are some that even have chauffeurs. Yet, those that are better off receive money from those that are struggling to give in the collection, which is error. Where is the equality? For religious leaders to live better than their members, is error and is not of the Church by Christ. Note again the Apostle Paul, one of the apostles Christians MUST follow :( see
also 2Cor.12:14-15). 2 Cor 8:11 Now therefore perform the doing of it; that as there was a readiness to will, so there may be a performance also out of that which ye have. 12 For if there be first a willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man hath, and not according to that he hath not. 13 For I mean not that other men (1)be eased, and ye (2)burdened: 14 But by an (3)equality, that now at this time your abundance may be a supply for their (4)want, that their abundance also may be a supply for your want: that there may be (3)equality: 15 As it is written, He that had gathered much had nothing over; and he that had gathered little had no (5)lack. (Please read verses 1-10 also) (KJV) Definitions: (1)NOT that other men be eased-425 anesis (an’es-is); from 447; relaxation or (figuratively) relief, a loosening, a relaxing a) spoken of a more tolerable condition in captivity, to be held in less vigorous confinement b) relief, rest, from persecutions: KJV— eased, liberty, rest….(2) and ye burdened-2347 thlipsis (thlip’sis); from 2346; pressure (literally or figuratively), 1) a pressing, a pressing together, pressure 2) metaphorically, oppression, affliction, tribulation, distress, straits: KJV— afflicted (-tion), anguish, burdened, persecution, tribulation, trouble…… (3) equality-2471 isotes (eesot’-ace); likeness (in condition or proportion); by implication, equity: KJV— equal (ity).e·qual (¶“kw…l) adj. Abbr. eq. 1. Having the same quantity, measure, or value as another. 2. Mathematics. Being the same or identical to in value. 3. a. Having the same privileges, status, or rights. b. Being the same for all members of a group. 7. Showing or having no variance in proportion, structure, or appearance…… (4)Want-5303 husterema (hooster’-ay-mah); from 5302; a deficit; specifically, poverty: KJV— that which is behind, (that which was) lack (-ing), penury, want.1) deficiency, what is lacking 2) in reference to property and resources, poverty, destitution……(5)lack-1641 elattoneo- 1) to be less, inferior, (in possessions) 2) to make less, to diminish Here in verse 5 of 2 Cor. 9, the apostle Paul was reminding the church in Corinth of the fore mentioned bounty that was to be gathered from them. He was assuring them that it was not of covetousness. In other words, he was not greedy, taking money for himself to put in his pocket.

WHAT IS TRUTH: “SANCTIFY THEM THROUGH THY TRUTH: THY WORD IS TRUTH.” But that it was a BOUNTY, in other words, a chance to invoke a benefit, a BLESSING to those brothers and sisters that were POOR; thereby laying up treasures IN HEAVEN, NOT ON EARTH. Then in verse 6 he was also reminding them ALL that if they gave sparingly (because they were stingy), then those benefits and blessings to those brethren that were IN NEED, would be sparingly; thereby making our HEAVE LY TREASURES the same. The more we CA CHEERFULLY give, the more of our NEEDY brothers and sisters we can benefit “BLESS”, by SUPPLYING their LACK, and also supplying the NEEDS to SAVE SOULS; which is a GOOD WORK. The more we LOVE our brothers and sisters, and soul salvation, the more GOD LOVES US. 2 Cor 9: 5 Therefore I thought it necessary to exhort the brethren, that they would go before unto you, and make up beforehand your (1)bounty, whereof ye had notice before, that the same might be ready, as a matter of(1) bounty, and not as of (2)covetousness. 6 But this I say, He which soweth (3)sparingly shall (4)reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall (4)reap also (5)bountifully. 7 Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work: 9 (As it is written, He hath dispersed abroad; he hath given to the poor: his righteousness remaineth for ever. I hope we are scripturally clear on this issue. To teach that “tithing is to be observed by Christians” is to teach error. We touched earlier on the similarity of the two: tithing of the Old Law, under Moses; and the collection for the saints, of the New Testament, under Jesus Christ. If you have carefully read the before mentioned scriptures, you will have noted, a tenth part of AII they owned HAD to be given, OTHI G MORE and OTHI G LESS. THEY HAD O CHOICE. This commandment as well as ALL given to THEM by GOD under Moses, had to be followed circumspectly; “Exod. 23:13 And in all things that I have said unto you be (1)circumspect: and make no mention of the name of other gods, neither let it be heard out of thy mouth.” Definition: (1)circumspect8104 shamar (shaw-mar’);a primitive root; properly, to
hedge about (as with thorns), i.e. guard; generally, to protect, attend to, etc.: KJV— beward, be circumspect, take heed (toself), keep, mark, look narrowly, observe, preserve, regard, reserve, sure. For one to teach the observance of TITHING one is a DEBTOR to teach CIRCUMCISION; ANIMAL SACRIFICES, STONINGS etc; in other words, the whole Law of Moses. Christians have never been under the bondage of the Old Law. “Acts 11:25 Then departed Barnabas to Tarsus, for to seek Saul: 26 And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. So, to answer the question that was first submitted “Tithing...has it ever been authorized by Jesus Christ, through his Apostles, to be observed by Christians?” The scriptural answer to this ques-
tion is, absolutely not. Again, the purpose of these articles is to share with you some scriptural truths; thereby exposing error, which is false doctrine. We believe this is done best by finding through definitions, and the PREPONDERANCE OF SCRIPTURE which is (Having superior weight, force, importance, or influence of SCRIPTURE), “What Is Truth?” We also believe this allows SCRIPTURE to INTERPRET SCRIPTURE, thereby allowing a better understanding on that topic. 2 Tim 3:13 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived. 14 But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; 15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works. (KJV) Note here what the apostle Paul admonished the Church in Corinth to do, “Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith;” NOT A FAITH OF OUR CHOICE, LEST WE BE reprobates; “2 Cor 13:5 (1)Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; (2)prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be (3)reprobates? 6 But I trust that ye shall know that we are not reprobates.” As always please note definitions. STUDENT OF THE WEEK JESSICA MADDOX - HOWARD By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View While visiting with my radio partners at KCOH AM 1430 we stumbled on Ralph Cooper’s interns and found them to be very interesting. Among them is former Clements High School graduate Jessica R. Maddox. Listening to them for more than two weeks we learned a little more about them. Jessica is the lovely, talented and charming graduate from Howard with a BA degree in Broadcast Journalism and a minor in Sports Management. Jessica is the daughter of proud parents Julia and Michael Maddox. We want to commend them for doing a wonderful job with her and keeping her focused all through her upbringing. Maddox graduated with a smooth 4.0 G. P. A. and has her goals set on becoming a sideline reporter on a major sport network. “I like Doris Burke and that’s what I want to start out doing and at some point I would like to challenge the sport management field as well”. It’s been a very long time since I’ve seen a student who is so focused on what she wants to be in life. Fact is we asked Jessica if she had a chance to live over again would she change any-
thing. “No Sir, I’ve taken advantage of having outstanding parents and they instilled my values at an early age and I’m certainly have made the most of all the opportunities that have put before me plus I feel truly blessed”. On Sundays you’ll find the Maddox family over at Christ United Methodist Church. Working with Vocational Bible School and serving in the mentoring programs were two of the things Jessica remembers most about her early days at the church. “I truly believe it helped me to strengthen my faith in God and overall simply made me the person I am today. When asked if she would change anything about Howard University Jessica thought for a moment then said; “perhaps the alumni could do a better job of giving back the school and the buildings are getting old and the school could use some renovation”. While at Howard Jessica pledged to a sorority and here’s what she had to say about it. “I’m a lovely lady of Alpha Chapter, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated and that is a big part of my life. It has transformed me into the young
We moved on to ask about the war in Iraq and her thoughts on the way President Obama is handling it. “I feel our President has made progress on bringing our troops home, keep in mind he has been in office only 2 and a half years”. On the subject of the taking down Bin Laden, Jessica had an interesting respond. “Keep in mind Bin Laden was public enemy number one and we got him and people celebrated that night, but now we need to move on to other problems we face as a nation”. The fact that she had the opportunity to vote for the first African American President was special for Jessica. “Let me say it was rewarding and to be in Washington D.C. when all this was happening and that was truly special for me”. Like most women old and young, Jessica says it every special for such a handsome black man as the commanding chief of the free world. “Yes the handsome look is one thing but the most important thing is the President is

PAIGE MCDUFFEE - THE WOODLANDS WILLIAM RENNER - BRAZOSWOOD BRAZOSWOOD
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View PAIGE MCDUFFEE THE WOODLA DS Austin, Texas-It was a great week for Paige McDuffee as she celebrated her 17th birthday she also won the state class 5A softball title to go along with a Nation championship. The junior won for the 37th time against only one defeat and helped the Lady Highlanders of Conroe The Woodlands High School to their first softball state title. After scattering 9 hits and tossing six struck outs including the game closing one against the talented Meagan Ramirez in the 7th winning, Paige walked away with the MVP. “We had a few mistakes but we knew we were going to pull it out”. Fighting through soreness in her pitching arm Paige got the job done when counted the most. “Yes sir my
arm is killing me but I looked at it as 14 innings and I knew we had to get it done”. Beating the defending state champs Pearland Lady Oilers in the semi-final kind of set the tone for the title game. “It was a big boost for us and it allowed us to go out and just have fun and play hard”. The last out was hard to come by and with the bases loaded and their lead trimmed to 7-5 and facing Meagan Ramirez the top player for O’Connor at bat. “I just went all out and pulled it out because they had a good rally going but we settled down and got it done”. Paige went 2 for 4 and was left on base twice in the game. With this talented junior coming back along with several of the key players this team could very well come back again next year! WILLIAM RE ER
Round Rock, Texas-After going 0-3 in the state semi-final game against Klein, former golfer now short stop Williams Renner was on a mission. He belted a two run shot to lead the Buccaneers to a big 10-3 win over Lubbock Coronado to claim the class 5A baseball title. Yes Renner who stopped playing baseball for two years to concentrate more on his golf game came back to the Diamond in a big way this year. “To be standing here holding the MVP is unbelievable to say the least, I’m sorry guys but I just don’t know what to say”. Renner did however say he felt it was certainly a team effort and Brandon Bergen could have very well won the award. “Brandon pitched a heck of a game and this trophy could just as well be anyone on our team”. He went on to thank the coaching staff and coach Bobby Williams for having him on the team. “This is special guys but all season long we have worked so hard and everyone chipped in”. The hard hitting short stop added he felt going into the game that Coronado was going to go with a lot of pitches to the outside
and they were waiting on them. “That’s what the scouting report said about them so we had what 13 hits and 10 runs, awesome”. “All season long people would tell us they were going to beat the tar out of us and now look we shocked the world and won
it all”. In closing Renner said the team was really excited to be up by 7 runs in the last innings and he is looking forward to seeing their state championship banner going up on the school’s billboard.

MAURICE SKILLERN COMING TO HOUSTON
Grooves of Houston 2300 Pierce St. Houston ,Texas 77003 Wednesday, November 30, 2011 @ 6pm - 10pm Maurice Skillern was born in Houston, Texas in August 1966. After graduating high school, he joined the active duty ranks in The United States Army where he has spent most of his adult life. He earned his Bachelors of Science from the University of Nebraska where he also earned his Masters in Physician Assistant Studies. Maurice found early in life that he appreciated the play on words that poetry could facilitate along with simply enjoying the individual songs from the hearts of poets that both amazed and stimulated his own thoughts. He has read the works of many of the greats of poetry with a few of his favorites being Edgar Allan Poe, Maya Angelou and Langston Hughes. He has also cultivated a mind open to new thoughts and ideas which made philosophy a subject that he was immediately at home with. In this pursuit, he has personally studied philosophers from Socrates and Aristotle to Sextus Empiricus. It is the synthesis of these two disciplines that form the foundation of his current work, which he refers to as “Poetic-Philosophy”*. In his writing, in a whimsical but focused fashion, he speaks of that which is, while alluding to what could or what might be. He also uses catalytic and well designed phraseology to effectively display new thoughts and ideologies. Some of his writings both challenge or question absolutes of this world, while still offering thought provoking entertainment to all who have read them. Always a visionary, a dreamer, he set out and began writing his first book of poetic-philosophy in 1990, with a piece from it being published in the anthology The Space Between in 1994. He continued on his writing quest and furthered his exploration of many different thoughts, ideas and forms of expression, which eventually culminated in the creation and publication of his current book “Messages”.

RISING STARS: JESSICA SNYDER - THE WOODLANDS FAITH BOHACK - THE WOODLANDS
By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View JESSICA S YDER THE WOODLA DS
Austin, Texas-In the region II finals Jessica Snyder was run down while protecting first base. So in the title game against Northside O’Connor they had got an out and in her words the Panthers pitcher elbowed her in the back. “I spent the next two innings really mad and when I had a chance to bat against her I wanted to knock the ball out the park”. So when the top of the 4th inning game up Snyder was
the led off hitting and smacked she hit the ball out of the park and started a chain reaction that led to 5 runs in the fourth inning. “I got tackled a few times in the Tomball region II series and I just said enough is enough”. She was not going to lie down anymore and Faith came on and hit a two run homer. Jessica went on to praise O’Connor with being a good team and played a very good game especially with that rally in the 7th inning. Looking ahead Jessica says she would like nothing better than to come back to state and win again next year. “We have a good number of our girls coming back and the best competition in our area is Bellaire who had 12 seniors and Tomball has a lot of seniors on their team as well”.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK-BRANDON BERGEN-BRAZOSWOOD By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Round Rock, Texas-Entering the playoffs as underdogs in region III to the likes of Lamar, Memorial and Klein, the Bucs of Brazoswood came from behind four straight times in their run to the state. Fact is in the state semi-final they trailed 3-1 before a big 3 run sixth inning saved the day for them against Klein. It was the 16th win of the season for ace pitcher Brandon Bergen against no defeats. But the lefty was not done because coach Bobby Williams having started
Bobby Franklin and going with junior Justin Dellinger for 2 and one third inning turned to his ace for the last two outs. After a brief warm-up the talented left hander quickly got the first batter to pop up and moments later he struck out the last out as his teammates mugged him on the mound. “We will remember this forever”. He went on to say he and his teammates wrote on their caps State 2011 and that’s what they worked for all season. “We just worked hard all season and did what we could and look how it paid off because we are state
champions”. Keep in mind this team went 120 in the playoffs and are very deserving of winning the state title. Just as the old saying goes sometimes the best defense is a good offense. That held true for the Bucs but in this case the ace put the finishes touches on a perfect playoff run. Going back to their third playoff game a 2-1 thriller against Pasadena South Houston all the way to game 12 a 10-3 blow-out in the title game, this team played hard and showed a lot of class.

BRAZOSWOOD BUCCANEERS WINS CLASS 5A TITLE
By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Round Rock, Texas-After a hard season the Buccaneers of Clute Brazoswood roared to the state class 5A baseball title with a sparkling 10-3 win over Lubbock Coronado. Jumping off to a 3 run first inning the Bucs didn’t look back as the big 5 run 6th inning sealed the deal.
Josh Ward scored the go ahead run to put some distance between the two teams. Following a seal after hitting to get on base and was batted in by John Ermis. “We didn’t want a
close game at the end so I was hoping after I got the steal John would knock me in”. The senior outfielder who was a pinch runner went on to say; to score a run at the Dell Diamond in the state title game is a special feeling and he will remember it the rest of his life. His 4th inning run gave his team a 5-3 advantage. In closing Josh said it jumped started the team and they went off in the 5 run sixth inning. It marked the sixth time they had come from behind to win a game. The team went unbeaten in the playoffs after having some big defeats during the season. Former Golfer William Renner went 3 for 3 and had 2 runs scored and 4 runs batted in for the day. The senior Designated Hitter and utility player took care of plenty business and walked away with the MVP. “We just got it all together for the playoffs and played so well down the stretch”.
Brazoswood pitcher Justin Dellinger (9) did fine job
Bobby Franklin opened the game and went three and two third innings giving up 7 hits and 3 runs before giving away to Justin Dellinger who came in for 2 and 2 third inning giving up only 1 hit. The hard throwing junior said he was in shock and
in awe of taking home the state title. “Yes sir I was able to get inside against Coronado today and it helped us win the state title”. Dellinger was praised by Coach Bobby Williams for taking up the challenge. “Justin has been the most accurate in the strike zone lately and he a little more get-it-up on his fast ball and he has a 12-6 curve ball”. With the game on the line ace pitcher Brandon Bergen came in and retired the final two batters and save the day after winning for the 17th time against no losses the night before 4-3 over Klein. Bobby Franklin got the start and won for the 9th time against only 3 losses while Justin Dellinger who is 3-0 gave the team two and two third quality innings. For Brazoswood it was an opportunity to get back at some teams that had beaten them in the regular season. Memorial whipped them 17-2 and 14-2 in two regular season games. WOODLANDS LADY HIGHLANDERS WIN CLASS 5A SOFTBALL STATE CHAMPIONSHIP By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Austin, Texas-After beating the defending state Class 5A champs Pearland 6-0 on their ace pitcher Paige McDuffee 17th birthday, the Lady Highlanders moved on to the title game against O’Connor. The stage was set after two metro-Houston area teams had already won state titles (Danbury and Santa Fe) the Woodlands with only one loss for the season came through. According to Coach Richard Jorgensen the game took on a different approach. “We were looking for a 3-2 contest or something along those lines; man this 7-5 contest makes me think I’m getting to old for this stuff”. The early outburst of two runs in the top of the first inning made all the difference in the world at the end. Fighting her way through soreness in her world class left arm Paige McDuffee told us she came to Austin with getting through 14 innings on her mind and she did.
and two runs batted in to lead the way. But she had plenty of help, because in addition to Bohack two run shot, teammate Jessica Snyder a first baseman belted a leadoff homer in the fourth to start the big five run fourth inning that turned out to be the difference in the contest. O’Connor came back very hard in the bottom of the seventh and scored three runs to close to 7-5, but Paige settle down and got them out despite the fact the bases were loaded and Meagan Ramirez their best athlete at the plate. Fact is Paige got her swinging and the game ended much to the celebration of the Woodlands faithful who made the trip to the capitol city. before the rebuilding and the changing of the name to the Woodlands. It seem like only yesterday when we had the Pasadena Dobie girls state championship softball team on KYOK AM 1590, but that happened in 1993 as the UIL began to recognize softball as a sport again. I‘m thinking back to the great Christi Williams, the winning pitcher on that great Pasadena Dobie team. The Lady Highlanders had a super team approach to the game and the way catcher Kayla Prater went to the mound and helped settle Paige down and her overall leadership showed from back of the plate. Most people don’t realize how important the catcher and pitcher stay on the same page during the stretch in big ball games. Here’s a list of the players on this team that closed the season at 44-1-Brooke Riemann a senior, junior Sydney Salmans, Sophomore Olivia Boutch, junior Taylor O’Dell, senior Kelsey Jolly, sophomore Alyssa Jorgensen who is the daughter of coach Richard Jorgensen, junior Faith Bohack, freshman Cimera Amy, Brittany Kellett, Holly Gillmore, Taylor Vick, Autumn Zientek, Kelsey Shannon, and Stefani Diehi are all sophomores and will return next season. Freshman Caitlin Hartsch and juniors Kayla Prater, Paige McDuffee and Jessica Snyder
As far as the game goes it lasted two hours and 34 minutes and the attendance was 1,378 as fans got more than their money’s worth. When you throw in the fact the Lady Highlanders had only two seniors on the squad you have to feel they will have an excellent shot at coming back again next year. Santa Fe also made MetroHouston proud as they rolled past Forney 10-3 to claim the Class 4A softball championship. The Lady Indians used the threerun double in the seven run fifth inning by sophomore MVP Ciara Sunseri to seal the victory. It gave them a commanding 8-1 lead and both teams went on to add two runs in the sixth inning. Santa Fe closed out the season with a sparkling 37-6 mark after beating Dripping Springs 3-2 in the semi-finals. The victory is
the first for the school in any major sport in its history. Celina beat West 5-1 to claim the Class 3A title in softball this time around. It was West beating Sweeny 9-7 in the semi-finals as Celina edged Huntington4-3 in 11 innings in the other semifinal Class 3A contest. Danbury won the Class 2A title for the second time as pitcher Kaylee Garner fanned 15 batters in six innings and allowed only one hit. A 9-1 victory over Nacogdoches Central Heights gives the Lady Panthers another title to add to the one they won in 2004 over Aubrey. After being called for two illegal pitches in the first innings Garner recovered and won the MVP for her outstanding performances. Leading 4-1 after two inning they never looked back. Shiner edged Grapeland 1-0 to take the Class A title after blasting Lindsay 16-4 in the semifinal game. Grapeland reached the finals after beating Albany 83 in the other Class A semi-final.

Austin, Texas-As the clock went past 10.30PM the Lady Highlanders of Conroe The Woodlands high school became the nation’s number one softball team. Coach Richard Jorgensen and his staff fought off a hard rally by Northside O’Conner to win a 7-5 thriller before 1,378 screaming fans. The site Red and Charline McCombs field on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin was blasting with cow bell and bull horns and all sort of rattlers to cheer on their teams. Starting the trip from the Woodlands to Austin the team’s bus Air conditioner went out about 30 miles up the road, but the girls were so focused they just let the windows down and rolled on to Austin. “I’m so proud of this bunch of girls because they worked so hard to get to this point and they were not going to let a little heat stop them, plus we were riding on our lucky bus”. Jorgensen is assisted by Paula Miller and Tim Borths and while
scouting the Lady Panthers the night before as they beat Plano 3-2 in the semi-finals, they notice the starting pitching was doing what they call crow hopping (leaving the bag before releasing the ball). “We didn’t say anything to the umpires about it but they noticed it and called it on her right of the bat”. Fact is the Lady Highlanders were able to get a couple runs of early runs in the top of the first inning as a result. “In all fairness to the young lady on the mound (Kenedy Urbany) when they don’t get called for it all season long, but when they come here it’s called I think it rattled her a bit”. Jorgensen went on to say last year at the state tournament the illegal pitch was called 16 times on one girl. “But fortunately for us we got a couple of runs early and it turned out we needed it after they rallied in the 7th inning”.
After a big 5 run fourth inning when it look as though the Woodlands were going to run away with it, the Lady Panthers came on to closed at 7-5 in the 7th and had the bases loaded. “I didn’t say anything to them during the time called I just tried to make them laugh and relax and get back to basic”. It was after
that ace pitcher Paige McDuffee struck out Meagan Ramirez who was clearly the most talented athlete on the O’Connor’s team.
would never get me again, but (Brandon) Bergen got my attention and they got me from behind”.
But instead he went with his ace Brandon Bergen who got both batter out one popped up and the other went down swinging.
Having only 2 seniors on the team coach Jorgensen has to feel good about his chances of coming back to state again in 2012. “I hope so, our goal will be to get back to state again and that’s been our goal all along, but with the title tonight we will have something to build on”.
After watching Coronado scored 10 runs in the semi-final game against defending champs Corpus Christi Carroll, Williams said it was great to get up on Coronado 3-0. “I think it was huge for us because it put a little doubt in their minds and that was just what we needed”.
Before beating the defending state championship Pearland Lady Oilers 6-0 the Lady Highlanders had a tough region II showdown with Tomball. Wining the first game 5-3 and falling 8-9 in the second game before winning 9-7 to advance. “Anyone who was at that game will be talking about that series for many years to come”. Crowd noise was at an all time high and the tension was greater than it was at the state tournament. “That was really a tough series because Tomball is the best hitting team in the state, that truly helped us get ready for the state tournament”.
As we talked more with Coach Williams we gathered he felt very good about the job his starter Bobby Franklin did in getting the win. “Yeh, Bobby pitched a real good game and we went with Justin Dellinger came in and did a fine job for 2 and 2 thirds innings. He went on to say everyone start out with a goal of winning the state tournament and only one team is going to have that honor. “I’m sure these kids are going to remember this, the rest of their lives”.
Coming out of region III considered by most to be the best region in the state and certainly the toughest helped get the Bucs ready for the title run. “No doubt we found that out when we faced F.B. Kempner, then South Houston, Deer Park, Lamar and Memorial all great teams and we had to play our A game every time out”. Williams went onto say that his team played their last 12 games about as well as they could. “That what it took and I think that’s what it should take to win the state championship”.
In closing Jorgensen praised his senior pitching ace Paige McDuffee and the way she played through soreness in her pitching arm and helped her team win it all. “Words cant’ describe what Paige means to us, not only as a pitcher and soft ball player, but a wonderful young lady as a whole.
Teams had been coming from behind all playoff long and Coach Williams said he was certainly glad to be able to have a 7 run lead going into the top of the 7th inning. “Heck I probably could have gotten a couple of guys to pop out to close it out.
Williams is assisted by Mike Cressman, Josh Cathcart, Chris Nabors, David Cowley and Javier Solis In closing coach Williams added after they lost two of their last three regular season games they didn’t know what to expect in the playoffs. “I knew our kids kind of loss focus after we clinched the playoff, but once they got some pressure on them they responded very well and we’re champs.

Round Rock, Texas-The last time Bobby Williams and the Clute Brazoswood Buccaneers were in the state title game was in 1992. That time Williams was an assistant on the team that won it all, but this time around he is the head man and it was a sweet victory. “Oh I guess other than actually playing in a state title game you can’t beat this”. Williams said the kids reminded him of the kids they had in 1992. “These kids worked their tails off every day and they followed our coaching instructions and we worked our way to the state championship”. After lasting all the way to the regional finals before the team got him with the ice bath. “I swore they

SHEILA HENDERSON DOING FINE JOB WITH UIL Austin, Texas-In March of 2009 UIL Executive Director Dr. Charles Breithaupt of the University Interscholastic League hired Sheila Henderson and it was one of his greatest moves. The charming Henderson is a graduate of University of Texas at Austin with a B.S. degree in Physical Education and Math. During her high school days at Yoakum High School Sheila participated in cross-country, track and field, volleyball and basketball.

For a combined 16 years Henderson coached at Taylor and Austin Bowie High Schools. Coaching cross-country, volleyball, girls’ basketball and track and field from 2003 to 2009 Henderson served at Assistant Athletic Director. For the past two years Henderson has served at the UIL Softball State Tournament Director. She also is the UIL Tournament Director for Girls State Basketball tournament and the co-director of the track and field state meet.
more”. Henderson went on to say putting the ball into play more makes the defense more active. “The pitchers are able to withstand the stamina of seven innings a little better”. We moved on to say girls softball is really growing and getting much more attention these days. “If you look at the numbers since 1993 participations is up about 500% in school participation and perhaps 700% participation from the girls”. Henderson went on to say it was never a matter of if the girls could do it but rather if and when they would be given the

opportunity.
A packed house was at the McCombs Field to see the title game and that excited Henderson. “It’s been a while since we’ve had a packed house and we’ve had some very exciting games throughout the tournament”. As we talked more with Sheila she mentioned the fact the tournament is still a bargain. “We haven’t raised our prices and even though we are in tough economic times our game is still a great family outing”. With a new realignment coming up in the next school year the job is going to be
tough to deal with all the growing regions. “We feel Dr. Mark Cousins our Director of Athletics here at the UIL will take a good look at what has to be done as it relates to that and we will work out a solid plan”. In closing Henderson added girls sports is on the upswing and she feels the UIL will be certainly equal in putting the proper efforts into all of its programs! We certainly enjoyed our visit with Henderson and look forward to working with her as she works to put on quality events for the UIL in the coming years!

It was a pleasure to see the 1993 Pasadena Dobie State championship team on hand for the softball title game. Henderson and her staff did a wonderful job of organizing the event and we certainly felt very welcome. The records also show that in1993 we had that same Dobie team on our radio show Prep Talk on KYOK 1590 AM in Houston. It really brought back memories and it goes to show what a fine job the UIL is doing and keeping the tradition alive and well. Keep in mind that was the first UIL Softball championship. We talked with Henderson on some of the rule changes for the 2011 season. “The biggest one would have to be the fact we moved the pitching distance from 40 feet to 43 feet and it put the ball into play

Getting out of an abusive or violent relationship isn’t easy. Maybe you’re still hoping that things will change. Maybe you’re afraid of what your partner will do if he discovers you’re trying to leave. Whatever your reasons, you probably feel trapped and helpless.

Even though leaving an abusive relationship can be frightening; the risks of staying are much greater. The good news is that there are many resources available for abused and battered women, including hotlines you can call for advice; shelters where you can stay; even job training, legal services, and childcare. You deserve to live free of fear. You can make that happen by taking steps to protect yourself and reaching out for help. Don’t wait!

Using multiple pitchers (4) was and is not unusual. That’s how they got to Omaha, using as many arms as are available. With the start of the NCAA Div1 Men’s College World Series, it also signals the end of the 2010-2011 college sports championship season. And what a college sports season we had locally. Houston made an impression on the college sports. Hosting national (NCAA Div1 Men’s Final Four) and conference championships (SLC Basketball), (C-USA Indoor Track & Field(UH), Outdoor
Track & Field(Rice), and Swimming & Diving(UH)), Great West Conference (Women’s Soccer, won by HBU), it says a lot about where we are now as a city. Having facilities that are available, that can host college sporting events. Remember the Men’s Final Four returns in 2016 and a Regional in 2015. Now, New Orleans and San Antonio have site rotation competition, which is a good thing. “In order to be a part of the game, you’ve got to get in the game.” The summer also brings about camps, both football and basketball. The contact, evaluation period for basketball begins around July 6th. Football camps are already under way across the state. Quite a few programs are taking their camps on the road to the talent to find the next ONE. That is what UH and Rice is

The Way I See It By BIG John Chandler Upon my travel to Round Rock to cover the state high school baseball championship Several weeks ago, I read the daily paper’s take on our local baseball team Houston Astros possible realignment into the American League. I thought it was somewhat late for an April Fools joke, but it brought a solid chuckle to me. The Astros for goodness sake are in no shape, fashion or form in any sense of the word ready for the best leagues in professional sports; the American League of baseball. We’re talking about a
league that simply mashes its opponents in regular, post and after the dust clears the off season in signing free agents. The Astros are not a bad team but we’re talking about the National League. Pitching and steady defense will win the National League but not the junior circuit. No one can tell me the Astros can match the offense of the toughest division in all of professional sports-the American League East where Boston, New York Yankees, Tampa Bay, Toronto and Baltimore will score runs on your team at will. Their pitching staffs including
In The Love Corner By Stevie T
HOW IS YOUR LIFE? Hey Houston, how’s your life? Do you have one? Sometimes we have to take time out to look at the whole picture. Is it the other person? Is it me? If we have numerous failed relationships, we have to begin to wonder, is it something I’m doing wrong. We often blame the other person when we break up, or have arguments. No one is perfect, if you know of somebody let me know. We all have faults and we all are individuals made from different molds. Everybody is going to have problems or disagreements in their relationship, that’s a given. How you handle them will determine if you have a meaningful relationship; one that will endure the good and the bad times. I even heard Joel the pastor of Lakewood Church mention in one of his sermons that even he and his wife don’t see eye to eye on everything, it’s how you work it out. You must work it out; never let it fester; that will only make a firecracker
into a stick of dynamite. It’s ok to agree to disagree, but we must respect each other and if we don’t try and talk at the same time it will make things easier to sort out. Try it, you will be amazed how things tend not to escalate if you are not trying to talk over each other, or compete for air space. And never go to bed mad at each other; try the five minute rule. Sometimes after we settle done we can’t even remember what we were arguing about. Have you ever done that? Sometimes we hold grudges for days, weeks, even years. Try the five minute rule and try and make sure everything is resolved and five minutes later everything is forgiven and on to something positive. Also don’t let the outside influences change or alter what you have to resolve yourself. Recently on In The Love Corner which airs on Wednesday evenings at 8:00 pm with my co-host Ms. Carletta Shepard, we talked about

ASTROS MOVE TO AL COULD BE A DISASTER the bullpens are second to none. Their fan base can be simply brutal on visiting teams. But for those of you convinced by these local beat writers here are several reasons I believe it would be a disaster to realign to the A.L. 1. No strong bat in the lineupFace the facts folks. The American is not going to get rid of the designated hitter any time soon. It has made the other batters better that one ‘big’ bat in the lineup. The pitchers are allowed to relax and just concentrate on pitching. That big stick was needed when the DH rule was implemented and there is no reason to think it’s going anywhere. The Astros have to sell their team to one of someone to play here. And with the teams in the A.L. why would anyone want to play for a team how our friends tend to try and help us with our relationships and a lot of the times they don’t have one themselves. They can’t manage their own love life. If there is a problem try and work it out with your partner, if it is that bad seek professional help if you think it’s worth it. Try at all cost to avoid the outside interference, and that includes family. Family has been the demise of many of relationships and even marriages. The top love songs for this month are 1 Do Me Baby Prince 2 Baby Hold on to MeGerald Levert 3 One in a Million-Larry Graham 4 Get Here -Oletha Adams, and 5 If Only for one Night -Luther Vandross. You are invited to join me on July 2nd at Cafe 4212 for an evening of your favorite oldies performed by Positive State of Mind and special guest Kalette. I’m the host for the evening and I’ll be looking forward to seeing you. The doors open at 7:00 pm, for more info call Karen of KDJ Entertainment at 832 338 8418. So until next keep a little love in your heart, the look of love in your eyes, and don’t let a day go bye without telling someone that you love them, even if that someone is You!
that may be 10 or more years from even competing to make the playoffs let alone the World Series? 2. Rivalries-The Astros have completed in National League for over nearly 50 years against the Giants, Reds, Dodgers Cardinals and Braves. We know those teams, the players and the cities. In the American League there is of course an in-state rival the Texas Rangers, but who else. In the A.L. West division the Astros will travel to both Anaheim to play the Angles and the northwest to face the Mariners in Seattle. Name me another team they will build a long sustain rivalry with. The travel costs will be incredible. 3. Fan Attendance-Sure Minute Maid Park will sell out for Boston and New York and some near sell outs with Texas but
who else. Remember, it’s not all that hot in the National League and this includes the year the ‘Stros made their run to the World Series. We can all dream of great regular season matchups but with interleague play do fans buy tickets to see Detroit or the Twins? Trying to come up with an interesting idea during the long hot summer months can be tough. But to throw this idiotic idea without even the consequences is simply lame. Stay put in the N.L. Astros, because this is a disaster movie in real life. That’s just the way I see it!

THE LIFE AND TIMES OF DON ROBEY PART III - LOOKING AT ROBEY THROUGH THE EYES OF HIS DAUGHTER DR. DONALEAH ROBEY-FIELDS By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View As we continue our series on the Life and Times of the great Don D. Robey we had a little chat with his daughter Dr. DonaLeah Robey-Fields. Right off the bat Mrs. Fields made it clear she knew her father as an outstanding man who was way ahead of his time. “He had a way of figuring out things before he made his moves and he was a strong person and had an extra focus on education”. Fields went on to tell us she was told by her parents where she was going to
attend college and that was all too it. “Oh it’s not like it is today, my parents had a love for Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee and that’s where I was going and I loved it and graduated with my BS degree in History. Growing up with the Robey name certainly had its moments and DonaLeah recalled some of those days. “When I walked in a room I would hear people say That’s Mr. Robey’s daughter there, but I don’t think people realized just how many people my father actually helped. Mrs.
Field added it was not uncommon for her to see the late great Louis Jordan and the late TBone Walker around their house. Not the mention the likes of people like Joe Ligon of the Mighty Clouds of Joy and Blues legend Bobby Blue Bland and many others. “We had a tremendous amount of exposure to well-known people through our father’s business and people must be aware that Duke Peacock Records was well before Motown. With a love for education DonaLeah went to work for HCC (1972) shortly after graduating from Fisk University and is still working at the central office as the director of International Student Services. “I haven’t decided when I’m going to retire but I would like to work with you on setting up some kind of honor for my father when I retire”. Let me assure you we will be willing and able to help build a true honor for Mr. Robey and all the lives he touched over the years. We also feel it would be fit and proper for us to establish a scholarship in his honor. The Houston community should rally behind this effort. The legendary Don D. Robey passed away on June 16, 1975 and was buried on June 19, 1975. Clearly Juneteenth is a fitting day to pay tribute to such a legend way ahead of his time. Even though they were living in 4th Ward DonaLeah went to Jack Yates High School. She

Don Robey admitted Mr. Robey kept a and doing fine. “We made it watchful eye on fellow who clear to him he would have to go were looking at hear. “He was a college and he could make only great father and he looked after one change, but he stayed with us and Education came first”. it. A few year after Mr. Robey passed away DonaLeah married Houston Police Officer Mr. Willie Fields and the couple have a son named Dedric who went on to Texas Lutheran University, Dedric was given the middle name of the legendary Don Robey. “Oh reminds me so much of my father and my husband and I wanted to allow him to choose his college home. The talented young man played both football and basketball in high school. Dedric graduated with honors and now has his own business
When asked if there is anything that reminds her of her dad DonaLeah said everything she look at her jewelry it reminds her of him because he made sure she had her share, but more importantly the way people ask if she kin to the late Don Robey. In closing Dr. Fields made it clear she feels good about the legacy of her father and want to keep his memories alive for many years to come!.
