TOYOTA ANNOUNCES ARRIVAL OF 2012 CAMRY HYBRID TO DEALERSHIPS TORRANCE, Calif., Nov. 14, 2011 – Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc. today announced that the new 2012 Camry Hybrid is arriving at Toyota dealerships across the nation. This all-new Camry Hybrid sets a new standard for efficiency, refinement and value in the mid-size hybrid sedan category. The 2012 Camry Hybrid features an updated version of Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain that helps propel the Hybrid LE model to EPA MPG Ratings of 43 city/39 highway and a class-leading 41 mpg combined. The revised hybrid-electric powertrain, which features a newly-developed 2.5-liter fourcylinder engine, also includes measures that improve electric motor-voltage control, optimize regenerative braking, and reduce parasitic losses in the transaxle. By combining the efficiency of the new hybrid-electric powertrain with reduced vehicle weight and improved aerodynamics, Toyota engineers eclipsed the efficiency of all currently available mid-size hybridelectric sedans with the all-new Camry Hybrid. New to the 2012 Camry Hybrid model, is an efficient EV mode that allows the driver to operate the car using the electric motor alone under certain conditions for up to one mile at speeds below 25 mph. As with the previous Camry Hybrid, the new vehicle is equipped with an ECO mode, which optimizes throttle response and air-conditioning output to help maximize fuel economy. The new Camry Hybrid’s strengthened body structure increases the vehicle’s rigidity to help improve handling, steering, ride quality and occupant safety. The Camry’s body structure is designed to help absorb collision-impact forces and help minimize impact deformation to the passenger cabin. High-strength steel is used for B-pillar and rocker-panel reinforcements to help manage overall body deformation in the event of certain side collisions.

The new available Blind Spot Monitor uses sub-millimeter wave radar to detect vehicles in the driver’s blind spots. When the system detects a vehicle in the adjacent lane, it alerts the driver using indicators on the side mirrors. If the turn signal is on when there is a vehicle in the blind spot of the driver’s intended lane, the indicator on the corresponding mirror will flash. Advancing the safety mission, the Camry Hybrid is also standard equipped with the Star Safety System™ that includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), Antilock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD), and Smart Stop Technology (SST). The 2012 Camry achieves amazingly low interior noise levels in its passenger cabin, which now offers enhanced refinement and capability. To reduce noise throughout the vehicle’s interior, sound absorbing materials were strategically positioned to help control the penetrating wind and road noise that have become more apparent as drivetrains become quieter. Engineers were particularly keen on suppressing the noises that are near the frequency of human speech to help create a more comfortable environment for conversation, and the enjoyment of the new Camry’s in-car electronics. Acoustic glass, stronger door and rocker area seals, and the application sound insulating foam in the roof, pillars, and door openings are among the noise countermeasures employed by engineers on the 2012 Camry Hybrid. A quiet, smooth, and refined ride quality are elements that help contribute to the enjoyment of the state-of-the-art connectivity features that are available on the 2012 Camry Hybrid. Standard features include hands free phone capability, and a USB port that allows enjoyment of music from portable devices. GALE MUSKIET - MOMS USA

Out and About with John Engel Can one person make a difference? After meeting with Gale Muskiet I am completely convinced. Gale is one of the most driven people I have spoken to in a very long time. The mother of a Marine (currently not serving, but a Marine is never an ex Marine), Gale wanted to do something to help our troops. Her son, Matthew had enlisted and was preparing to head for boot camp when the towers fell in New York. Gale was very concerned for the safety of her son. He became an ordnance specialist and rose to Corporal. After his service, Matthew returned home to Houston and is now serving as a Houston Police Officer. Something his military training prepared him for this career perfectly. Her organization, MoMs USA, stands for Mothers of Military (all Branches) Serving. The group is open to everyone, not just mothers. “Mothers” hold a special place in our hearts no matter who you are. They are God’s special care givers who generally go that extra mile for their son or daughter.

MoMs is a local organization working in our area. A legally registered 501.c.3 charity, all donations are fully tax deductible. Here is the Mission Statement of MoMs: The mission of MoMs USA is dedicated to the support of the brave men and women of the US Military through the raising of funds to help meet their needs. MoMs purchase and ship supplies and materials to our military, especially those deployed on foreign soil. Fund- Raisers help to provide the encouragement, love, support and as much of “home” as we are able to provide to our brave who are serving America. Primarily the group provides care packages to troops serving outside our Country, for the most part in combat zones. They have branched out and are now trying other projects, writing letters and providing other emotional support. Per Muskiet, there is nothing more heartbreaking than a man or woman that does not receive a letter or a

care package at mail call. During Family Day as her son graduated from USMC boot camp, she met a young recruit whose family was not able to make the ceremony. The Muskiets “adopted” this recruit for a day and brought him to dinner as if he was part of their family. This was the beginning of the formation of the group. She has heard repeatedly that some or our troops are totally alone and could use the support. They have also done everything possible to support our wounded troops. MoMs has provided local welcome’s/encouragement for our wounded heroes that were from out of state arriving at our airports for a fishing trip in Port O’Conner. Sometimes the soldiers arrive a day in advance and need the care and attention of those who support them. MoMs will arrange to feed the wounded and make sure they are comfortable until it is time to reconnect with the others who will arrive early the next day at the airport. In addition, MoMs will raise the funds for overnight hotel rooms, transportation to and from dinner for those arriving early. Then lunches and drinks are placed on the tour buses the next day for approximately 200 total wounded that will travel on to Port O’Conner.

One of MoMs biggest needs are donations to do all of this as well as being able to ship the care packages, along with donated items for filling the care packages (see sidebar for list of needs). Girl Scout cookies are one of the most sought after goodies but taking #2 place to summer sausages with crackers and spicy mustard by our troops. It just makes them feel at home! In addition to the goodies in the box, Muskiet is looking for letters, and for winter time knitted caps/scarf’s (due to regulations see the list for approved colors) and anything else that would make the troops feel closer to home while overseas. One suggestion would be for teachers, school clubs, retirement and Veteran groups to sit down and write letters or coordinate an event to help MoMs. Teachers are welcome to have letter writing projects and donation collections. Younger children are invited to create drawings to send the troops. One warning, though: all envelopes must remain unsealed. This is for security purposes and to be sure inappropriate content is not sent. Of course, the recipients will not know the people who send items but any news from home is a real comfort. For safety reasons abroad, do not include your address or any other personal information as they cannot guarantee your information will be kept secure. Additional projects included securing cases of flea powder donated by a name brand provider (sand fleas are a real threat). A Women’s business group donated a large number of foam pads to be used on the uncomfortable cots our soldiers have to sleep on. Fly paper is a big deal also.

Volunteers are always needed to pack boxes, welcome troops at the airport, and speak to classes and other groups that are able to help. If you want to help there are many things you can do. Visit the MoMs web site at www.momsofusa.com. There you will find contact information and ideas on how to help. Of course money is always needed as well. Sending a package (items and shipping) to a combat zone can cost as much as $50 to $60 each box. In addition, ideas for fund raisers and coordinating a fund raiser are most welcomed. Another way to help is to patronize the business contributors listed on their web site. Be sure that when you are at one of these generous sponsors you let them know you are there because they support MoMs USA. Recent projects include securing donations of flea powder (sand fleas are a real threat) and sending it to our troops. One company donated a large number of pads to use on the uncomfortable cots our soldiers have to sleep on. MoMs joined efforts in providing information with a couple of prominent businessmen who secured torches and welding equipment and such that was needed to help “armor-up” our military’s humvee’s in Iraq right after the war started. Thanksgiving and Christmas is the main season when people think about donating and volunteering to help in some way. But Muskiet wants to remind everyone that the need is there 365 days a year, not just at holidays. It’s needed all the time, until they all come home says Mom Gale.

Jake started Sam Houston State University this past summer. He has 12 credit hours done and is now working on 15 more this fall and is the youngest student on campus this year. He is majoring in Criminal Justice, is with ROTC and is VP of Theta Chi fraternity. At this rate, he will be a Sophomore by Spring. He is on the fast track and plans to do school in the

summer just as he has all his years home schooling. The reason he has made VP of Theta Chi already is because of DeGeorge. He didn’t tell anyone about his charity but his brothers in his fraternity found him on the internet and they want to raise a ton of money for DeGeorge this Xmas. WHAT IS TRUTH: THANKSGIVING Thanksgiving: There are many in the religious world today having FUN; having HOLIDAY feasts, parties, drinks, and just having a merry good time (REVELLI G). We are sure some if not most would ask, what’s wrong with that? There is nothing wrong with it according to our FLESH, actually it is FU ! But according to Christ and his apostles, to our SPIRIT it is a vexation, to our SOUL it is damnation, because the FLESH cannot please GOD. The CARNAL MIND is hatred against GOD and is not SUBJECT to the LAW of GOD. Thereby, not having the Spirit of Christ (antichrist), please read; Rom.8:5-10; Gal.5:16-17; Phil.3:16-20; Titus3:8-11. For even when the, “Holiday” season starts, what is truly thought of the most? Is it Christ or is it the time off, the fleshly family gatherings, the glutinous foods and drinks, the carnal games, the vain carnal trees and decorations, and or the materialistic “gifts”? According to scripture our thoughts cannot be of Christ, when the things that we are observing and or doing, CANNOT be found in HIS instructions to HIS Church (Matt.17:18; Matt.28:18-20; John17:16-23; 2Cor.1:12-14; Eph.3:1-7; 2Pet.3:1-2; 1John4:5-6). But rather are the things that go against Christ, thereby DENYING HIM and his FATHER, (ANTICHRIST) (Isa.29:11-14; Matt.15:7-9; Mark. 7:6-9; Luke 6:43-49; 1John2:15-26; 2John1:7-13). Let your conversation be ONLY about the ONE thing that is NEEDFUL; Christ, the scriptures, and soul salvation while at these gatherings, and see how popular you will be (Philp.1:27; 1Tim.4:11 -16; 1Pet.1:13-19; 2Pet.3:8-12). Take the carnal, fleshly wants of man out of the equation; there would be no observance of these CARNAL days that Christ has not authorized, to those that are his. If these instructions were followed, the so-called Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter FEASTS would not exist with those professing Christ. Christians are to give to the needy all the time, not on some day put in place by man, the creature (Matt.5:38-48; Luke 6:27-36; Acts20:29-35; Rom.12:9-21; Gal.2:9-10; 6:910; Eph.4:28; Phil.2:1-8. Then, we would be following the instructions of God, the Creator, through Christ, and his apostles. But many choose NOT to follow these and many other instructions left by Christ. Why is this; is it because of the lack of knowledge or just being rebellious, because of what we like, (our BELLY)? “Matt 22:29 Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.” “Luke 6:46 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? 47 Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like: 48 He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.” Luke 16:13 No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. 14 And the Pharisees also, who were covetous, heard all these things: and they derided him. And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God. Now here is a day that is among many others, that is Highly Esteemed among MEN, and has been set up by man for his BELLY, the things that he LIKES. grace alone.” Please check the complete history of this tradition, and you will find it NOT being at all CHRIST LIKE. As we have read, this tradition came MUCH too late to be of Christ or his apostles. The statement, “salvation of the elect by God’s grace alone,” is OT according to scripture, therefore it is dangerous ERROR! According to scripture, we are saved by grace, but NOT grace ALONE. We are saved by many things, grace being one, baptism and the obedience of the WORD being another, which is another lesson, but for now please read (James1:21-27; 1Pet.3:20-22). Here again is the problem; it follows not the instruction given by Christ (Luke14:12-14; Rom.12:16). There is no need for man to set up such, not for a Christian Because; the instructions for giving thanks have already been set by THE WORD, and it is Perfect and Complete. The CREATOR needs NO help from the CREATURE (Rom.1:25). The creature MUST OBEY and follow the instructions already given, IF we are to be followers of CHRIST and his apostles, (Christians). Christians must abound in thanksgiving 24/7, and give thanks when ever we eat, according to the apostles’ word, not on some day given by man. Christianity is not SEASONAL, but a 24/7 LIFESTYLE, and according to scripture ALL THI GS MUST be done with thanksgiving. According to scripture, Christians MUST not live by the flesh anymore. Christians MUST put on Christ in baptism and KEEP him on, thereby putting on the new man, and that NEW man MUST be a SPIRITUAL one (Rom.8:5-9; Gal.3:27). For when we choose to take Christ OFF for our Belly’s sake (fleshly wants); we then become that old fleshly man, and we SIN. We all have kinsmen in the flesh, but Christians MUST remember who their family truly is. The SPIRITUAL family reunion is set on each Lord’s Day (Acts20:1-7), and it must be attended (Heb.10:25). Contrary to what is being taught in the religious world today, EARTH is a Christians’ WORK place (Philip2:5-16), there is no time for FUN (horseplay), Christians MUST redeem the time (Eph.5:14-17). Christianity is a SERIOUS LIFESTYLE, and there is nothing more serious than it; in that it is about either having eternal life in HEAVEN, or eternal death and torment in HELL (Matt. 12:34-37; Mark9:43-48; Luke16:19-25; Heb.10:24-31). If Christ and those before us SUFFERED not to participate in such things, why do “Christians” today think they have the right not to suffer? True Christians today must SUFFER also, we MUST suffer to be obedient and follow those before us, so that we can cease from sin (Philip.1:29; Heb.5:89; 1 Pet 4:1-4). Jesus Christ said that the belief of him is in the apostles’ word, so that we ALL will be ONE (John17:14-21) because he gave them, the apostles the Word, and they Kept IT, (John17:5-10; Acts1:1-4). Remember the engrafted Word is also able to save our souls if we are doers of it and not hearers

only (James 1:21-22). He that hath an ear, let them hear and then strive to do, if we are to be of the Church that Christ is building (Acts 2:47). ALABAMA A & M BULLDOGS SNAPPED P V PANTHERS CHANCES OF A SWAC CHAMPIONSHIP By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Prairie View, Texas-Aggravated by the fact they were the picked as the homecoming opponent of the Prairie View A&M Panthers, the Bull Dogs of Alabama A&M turned back P V 17-15. The win gives them a berth in the SWAC title game on December 10th in Birmingham. Wide receiver G’Alonzo Milton grabbed three passes for 100 yards and two touchdowns as the Dogs disappointed 10,500 fans. “I can’t believe they made us homecoming; something’s not right about that said the junior receiver from Miami Florida. At 6 feet and 205 pounds, Milton was able to get open and get yards including a 68 yards touchdown from

David Isabelle who came in for the injured Deaunte Mason. “I went to David and said just have faith in me and I’ll make the plays when we have to throw the football”. Coach Anthony Jones said his team played hard against a good football team and he thanked God for their win. “It’s truly a blessing because we had our back Kaderius (Lacey) play well today as he has all season long”. Jones went on to say David (Isabelle) did a good job filling in for Deaunte Mason who was injured. “We felt David did a good job when Deaunte went down but the key was the way we controlled the line of scrimmage”. BIG SHIP, BASKETBALL AND BOMBS...NCAA HOOPS HELD ON NAVY AIRCRAFT CARRIER By Alexis Williams A King-Size View What do you get when you mix two top collegiate basketball teams, the president of the United States of America, bombs and missiles all together on a gargantuan, nuclear-powered battleship? You sort of get the movie “Top Gun” on steroids. No, not really. In actuality, you get 2011 big time, NCAA basketball. The first ever, Carrier Classic, replete with a regulation basketball court, scoreboards, over 8,100 spectators, plus millions of television viewers, all on a colossal U.S. Navy aircraft carrier. Michigan State University and University of North Carolina opened their basketball seasons with all the fanfare that one might expect for visiting royalty from a foreign country. Afterall, the Commander-in-Chief, the Navy’s top brass, sailors galore and other dignitaries do not regularly attend road games. These college cagers played up to a whole new level [literally and figuratively]. Atop the deck of the USS Carl Vinson, the North Carolina Tarheels beat the Michigan State Spartans 67-55 on Nov. 11. The first of its kind, this game was held in Coronado, California. The home base for

the aircraft carrier in greater San Diego ( known to civilians as U.S. Navy central). This was one shining moment for the U. S. Navy. This famed carrier was most recently, the vessel used to dispose of the body of America’s No. 1 enemy, Osama Bin Laden. President Barack Obama addressed the mostly uniformed navy audience, clad in a brown, leather, bomber jacket. During the pregame speech he reminded the crowd that the U.S.S. Carl Vinson provided sorely needed relief in Haiti after the massive earthquake, and after Sept. 11th launched air strikes in the Middle East among other things. Of all the navies in the world, the U.S. Navy is the biggest, the most diverse and the most powerful. This opportunity to flex its muscle and showcase one of its largest pieces of equipment took quite some doing. A logistical and tactical operation such as this involved a great deal of planning and manpower. Native Houstonian and retired navy serviceman Gregory Alexander gave some insight as to just how tedious this monumental task probably was. In sailor lingo, Alexander said, “This I’m sure was like ‘all hands evolution!’ It took contributions from everyone to prepare for the high level dignitaries and to

insure the overall success of this event.” Aside from routine maintenance while at home port, the construction of a basketball arena had to be accomplished fast and furiously. They had to put into place: jumbo-sized screens, scoreboards, temporary bleachers, portable johns, etc. Alexander, who was stationed on several ships including the first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier (the USS Enterprise) during his 21-year stint in the Navy, worked as a storekeeper in highly compartmentalized vessels. Reportedly, the actual assemblage of this floating basketball arena began on or around Nov.1, eventhough the game was announced back in July. Plans were eventually scrapped for a second court beneath the deck in case of inclimate weather. The national meteorologists must have worked overtime. The event, filled with pomp and circumstance, was the brainchild of Mark Hollis, the athletic director for Michigan State University. He came up with the idea over ten years ago. And miraculously, ten years later, who would be honorary captains? None other than National Basketball Association greats Magic Johnson and James Worthy. Hollis, a man known for novel ideas, reportedly once

put a college hockey game in a football stadium. Non-profit Morale Entertainment Foundation (MEF) that’s accustomed to bringing in entertainment for the troops on active duty was primarily responsible for the massive undertaking. Retiree Alexander recalls being entertained in concert, by the likes of Cheryl Lynn, War and The Who while on active duty and docked at the Naval Air Station Alameda in California. According to the non-profit MEF, it cost $2 million to make the Carrier Classic happen, with no cost to taxpayers. Unbelievably, there was no scalping of tickets at this big game. Tickets were not for sale. For security purposes each ticket carried the picture of its spectator. The National Collegiate Athletic Association provided the hardwood floor (258 pieces) that was used in last season’s Final Four in Houston, Texas at Reliant Stadium. These heavy floor squares had to be airlifted onto the deck of the ship. Remembering that this was an active, commissioned U. S. Navy ship, the floor was tied down rather than bolted down, in case of an immediate official deployment. This was truly one for the history books. The players, the

coaches, the respective fans, millions of television viewers, etc. were all amazed and marveled at this monumental undertaking. Reportedly, after the game, in a goodwill gesture, the camouflage-designed jerseys worn by both teams bearing the name and logo of the classic was given to servicemen of the ships’ crew. The Navy, the NCAA, and the universities all received a gigantic boost in their respective recruiting departments. Americans everywhere should stand a little taller after this amazing feat. For years to come, the question will remain what collegiate sports event can top this? The USS Carl Vinson is named after a former 50-year member of the U.S. House of Representatives from the state of Georgia. For twenty-nine of those years, Carl Vinson, (now deceased), was the principal sponsor of the Chairman of the House Naval Affairs and Armed Services Committee. He was the principal sponsor of the so-called “Vinson Acts,” culminating in the Two Ocean Navy Act of 1940 which provided for the massive Naval shipbuilding effort in World War II.

JACKSON FAMILY WELCOME A BIG-TIME FRIEND By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View It’s been more than 28 years since we first came in contact with the Jackson Family of Acres Homes. If memory serves me correctly, the late Joe Booker had written in Forward Times that a Yates back and went over 200 yards and had the most of any city back. He got a phone call from Mrs. Sadie Jackson informing him that her son Roy Jackson Jr. had rushed for 250 yards against Eisenhower for the best in the state that weekend for Aldine-MacArthur. The late Varee Shield suggested I go and see the Jacksons and set the record straight. I can still remember going to their house on West Little York and being a bit afraid when I saw Roy Jackson Senior outside. But they invited me in and I had a chance to get to know the family over the years. So when Gwen Jackson told me of Roy’s best friend (Maurice Skillern) writing

now I certainly wanted to get involved. My how time truly flies because it seems like only yesterday Jackson was rushing for over 5,800 yards and scoring 62 touchdowns to rewrite the record books at MacArthur under the late Bob Alpert.

Back to the matter at hand Captain Maurice Skillern currently has a book called “Messages” on the market. “That book was born in 1991 and when you read it you are looking at the story of my life”. Skillern went on to say when he gets a phase in his head, he studies it until he can put it into words no matter how long it takes. Skillern retired after 22 years of service in the United States Army including two tours of duty overseas. Skillern wasted no time in telling King-Size View’s Jerry Woodley about how the Armed Services helped

him get a B.S. as well as his Masters degrees. “When I agreed to give the Army my time they agreed to allow me to get my education”. He went on to talk about the discipline he learned from being in the service. “You have to be focused on what you are doing in the Army because mistakes can cost lives including your own if you are not careful”. Skillern also mentioned the importance of having good friends like Roy Jackson Jr. “We became friends when we were in the fifth grade and our friendship grew over the years”. Jackson made a name for himself on the football field while Skillern played basketball in high school but the two young men stayed in touch all through the years. “When I would come home we would hook up and talk about the old days when we use to pick berries and plums back in the day”. Both men parents still live in the same place so they kept in touch all these

years. “Tonight Roy told me he loved me and man that was special because when we were coming up you didn’t say that to another man, but we have been friends for a very long time”. Both men now have children and their kids actually know each other as well passing the friendship down to the next generation. In talking with Jackson we got some of the same feeling toward Mo Skillern that he told us he had for Jackson. “We hung out together all the time and kept in touch with one another over the years”. Even though he doesn’t talk about it much, Jackson made All-American his junior year at Southwest Texas State

University (now Texas State) when he rushed for more than 1,300 yards including his 186 yards and four touchdowns performance against Rice. An injury to quadriceps muscle kept him out of most of his senior year and he did play the last six games getting over 600 yards that season. “But it was a long time before I could actually run hard again”. After all what are friends for, Roy Jackson Jr. and Maurice Skillern are the best of friends and we wish both of them continued success. The Way I See It By BIG John Chandler I have watched the Penn State sex abuse case unfold and trust me I’m not at all surprised. In fact I saw all of this coming several months ago. No dear readers, I didn’t know that possible sex abuse had occurred at the university. No I talked about how money was destroying amateur athletics. Sadly all universities are grabbing every dollar that’s presented to them with no regard to what those presenters

are demanding in return. We’re only at the tip of the iceberg. Just think what will be offered when the Bowl Championship Series expires. There will be those that will try to extend the agreement (with some modest changes) and those that will offer an unseen amount to set up a winner take all college playoff. There will be arguments, the like we’ve never heard before. Trust me, gamblers, equipment

Their father Gregory Bennett is a Receivers’ Coach and Coach of the Freshmen Basketball Team at Manvel High

School. He is a native of Miami, Fla., and attended Miami Edison HS, where he was a quarterback and receiver on the football team; he also played basketball. He was a USA Today and Parade All-American. Coach Bennett received a scholarship to University of Louisville, where he graduated with a master’s degree in education. He is entering his tenth year of teach-

ing and coaching, this is his 2nd year as the receivers’ coach at MHS. Coach Bennett has been married for 18 years to LaTosha Bennett; who was a Cheerleader at Sterling High School in HISD and at Texas Southern University. She is also an educator and currently an assistant principal with the Harris County Department of Education. The couple has three boys: Ashton (17), Austin (15), and Arik (11). Ashton (#6) and Austin (#14) are both starters on the 12 and 0 Manvel HS Football Team. They are major components to their team’s success and are leaders on the field. Their dad and coaches are extremely proud of them and their contributions to the team. Their mother Mrs. Bennett stated “that there is something unique about this year’s team. It is like we have this gigantic family that eats and sleeps football”. She added that “it is not unusual to see the Head Football Coach, his staff and many of the football players at church on Sundays”. Arik the youngest son is currently in Middle School and waiting for his time to shine under the Friday ight Lights. The Manvel Mavericks will play Dayton for the Third Round Regional Championship. I am sure the Bennetts will have an impact and as I told Mrs. Bennett, I truly believe that we will see them in Arlington. It is very rewarding for me to see a family that is extremely thankful and striving together to make this world a little better; that is why the Bennetts are our Movers and Shakers for the month of November.

department at Penn State. The amount of money was more important that protecting the innocence of a young juvenile boy. Has our society sunk so low that money is rule #1? Do we close our eyes to any evil before us but keep our hands open for the cold, hard cash? Have we lost our basic beliefs that it’s always the right time to do the right thing? Maybe that old bible versus means nothing today-‘the love of money is the root of all evil’. I’m interested to watch this case proceed thru the courts. I’m interested as to how Penn State can continue with massive amounts of settlements that could completely bankrupt the

state of Pennsylvania. I will keep my opinion about college athletics-the love of money will ruin it. We don’t have enough individuals that will take a stand and say no! We simply feel the need of money and the things it can do outweigh all the negative things that have happened because of it. Maybe I’m just too old and my opinions are just outdated. But that bible verse taught to me many years ago by my deceased mother still rings in my ear as I close this column‘the love of money is the root of evil’! That’s just the way I see it!

TIS THE SEASON Hey Houston, fall is upon us, and so is cooler weather. What a relief from a long hot summer. Cooler the temps, the closer we can get to each other especially when it comes to affection. What do you do if your mate is less affectionate than you? Does that pose a problem? These days we find that women are less loving and caring than men. Women tend to be ok with being close as long as it is not in public or what they want at that time. What happened to the old fashion woman, where holding hands and kissing was the prerequisite for romance? I’m beginning to think kissing is a disappearing art. Back in the day if we received a kiss at the end of the date, we got excited and couldn’t wait for the next date. As seasoned couples we tend to let the fire and excitement just die out. We tend to go thru the motions, and become complacent in our relationships. It is up to us to make our dates, our relationships interesting and lively. Make the effort people. Don’t always wait for the other person to make the first move. Of course every day and every date won’t be filled with affection and excitement, that’s a given. So if for some reason you can’t be affectionate, due to stress, kids, other people, or just everyday stuff, you have to replace it with compliments, which we are guilty of not doing enough of, kindness which you can never do too much of and of course there is always gifts a great substitute for some. And of course the more you communicate the better, and just plain attention to your partner makes

the world of difference, try looking at them more and noticing things you would not normally notice. You know my saying, if you don’t somebody else will. HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL REPORT-KATY TIGERS CONTINUE TO ROLL By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View The Katy High School Tigers won for the 12th time this season against no defeats with a 4430 hard fought victory over Cypress Woods. When Brooks Haack found Jordan Thompson from 15 yards out with less than nine minutes left in the first, many thought the Tigers were going to roll to another easy win. But that was not the case as the Wildcats kept fighting back scoring in each of the quarters. However the 21 point second period was enough as Brooks Haack ran for one score and Rodney Anderson ran 12 yards for another score and a 3423 halftime lead. The Tigers added more when Stein Spiller hauled in a 10 yard scoring pass from Haack and Kyle Fulks hooked up from 45 yards away to close out the Tigers scoring. Haack finished the game 14 of 18 for 194 yards and three touchdowns. Defending state champ Pearland Oilers blasted Deer Park 47-7 as Jacob Gardner hit on seven of 13 passes for 144 yards and a touchdown. Kevin Washington scored both on the ground and in the air in the win.

Lamar scored 14 points in the fourth period to come from behind to beat Cypress Falls 3534. London Kirby ran two yards for one 4th period score and Darrell Colbert found Bradley Ward from nine yards out for the final go ahead score. Kirby had 22 carries for 77 yards and two scores while Ward scored both in the air and on the ground for the Redskins. Fort Bend Hightower ran past Galena Park-North Shore 34-21 as Bralon Addison ran for 159 yards on 17 carries and scored from six yards out. The Canes quarterback who is the son of

La Marque Cougars clawed their way past Sharpstown 46-7 as Tim Wright opened the scoring and Ja Core Alridge added two scoring runs in the blow out win. Cy-Fair beat Cinco Ranch 21-14 as John Jacob ran for 104 yards and two touchdowns. The win moves the Bobcats to 12-0 for the season. It was 14 points in the second period that led to the win when Logan Taylor found

Despite a great showing by Xavier Howard, Angleton beat Wheatley 65-36. Howard scored six times for the Wildcats of Wheatley in the loss. Vidor rolled over Montgomery 42-35 in a big shoot out while Nederland got by Stratford 2114. It was Pearland Dawson blasting Reagan 72-6 and Yates fell to Manvel 53-18. Beaumont Ozen squeezed by Brenham 1410 and Dayton beat Magnolia West 41-23. The Woodlands beat Round Rock Westward 21-14 to close out the Metro-Houston area scores.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK-CLARENCE MORRIS- ALABAMA A & M By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Prairie View, Texas-As the SWAC Championship game waits on the winner, the Panthers of Prairie View had their homecoming game with their opponent the Bull Dogs of Alabama A&M. One of the toughest Bull Dogs is defensive back Clarence Morris. They say he is 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighs somewhere around 155 pounds, but he not only barks this kid bits. A senior from the same hometown of the late soul singer Wilson Pickett (Prattville Alabama) says they got upset when they found P.V. had them down as their homecoming game. “We found out earlier in the week and we stated we’re going down there and send their fans home with sad looks on their faces and we got that done with this win”.

Dating back to high school days at Prattville, Clarence says the receivers have always been bigger than him, but it didn’t matter. So when he faced Deandre Cooper a 6 feet 3 inches and 215 pounds receiver from Smiley High School he wasn’t afraid. Fact is Cooper caught only two passes for 37 yards and one six yard touchdown. “I just work to get under the receivers skin and take them out of their game plan”. After a 0-2 start the Bull Dogs have won seven straight games and will get their chance in the title game again. “Yes sir people fail to realize we had a big lead in our first game and had a field goal blocked as time ran out, and our second game we had tons of injuries. I didn’t play in that game because of injury”. As we talked more with Morris

By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Prairie View, Texas-Coming into the game due to the injury to starter Deaunte Mason, David Isabelle made the most of his performance passing six of seven for 148 yards and two touchdowns. His performance was a big reason the Bull Dogs eliminated the Panthers from the SWAC title game with a thrilling 17-15 victory. Isabelle a junior transfer stands 6 feet 3 inches and is 225 pounds. The Nashville native talked with us about the game and his involvement. “Oh I felt cool, calm and collected because I knew my team had faith in me to get the job done”. As we talked more with Isabelle we learned he had actually competed for the starting job earlier in the season. “When it was time for my number to be called I just trusted in God to help me get the job done so I stepped into the role. We knew we could run the ball well with Kaderius (Lacey 38 carries 163 yards) and he doesn’t mind carrying our team on his back”. The talented junior went on to say he felt they had to throw to keep from running their back to

death. “We felt if we could hit some passes we would take some of the pressure off Kaderius”. In closing Isabelle says the team started 0-2 but they are a force to be dealt with and they look forward to their chance in the title game on December 10th.

we learned he was only a sophomore when P.V. beat the Bull Dogs for the SWAC title two years ago. “We had a lead in the SWAC title game and they (P.V.) came back on us plus they had beaten us here at their field in the regular season”. It had been a few years since the Bull Dogs had beaten the Panthers dating back to 2005. “We felt it was a lot riding on this game and P.V. has a great team and we feel honored to be able to get a win in here today”. The talented defensive back closed by saying they feel they can get in gear and win the SWAC title game on December 10th in Birmingham Alabama. Their opponent will be Grambling State or Arkansas Pine Bluff depending on the Bayou Classic outcome between Grambling State and Southern University.

DRY SPELLS HURT PANTHERS IN LOSS TO NEVADA

A View From The Stands By Ryan McGinty RE O, ev. – The Prairie View A&M men’s basketball team dropped its second consecutive matchup as the University of Nevada handed them a 60-47 loss on Sunday evening in the first leg of the Chicago Invitational Challenge. The Panthers were their own worst enemy immediately after the tipoff as they went scoreless for nearly seven minutes until a layup by Demondre Chapman with 13:24 remaining. On the other side of the court, the Wolf Pack took advantage as they led 14-2 following Chapman’s basket. Sophomore Louis Munks scored PV’s second basket of the evening followed by Cortney Bell as PV cut its margin to 10 at 16-6 with 11:08 left in the half.

UNR’s Deonte Burton hit two free throws shortly thereafter but the Panther defense stepped up to the occasion as a Tim Meadows‘ steal paved the way for Chapman to record his second basket of the game and a 16-8 deficit at the 9:33 mark. From that point, Prairie View would draw no closer than eight points the rest of the way as UNR closed out the first half on top 31-21. Junior Jourdan DeMuynck opened the second half with a jumper which brought PV to within eight points once again at 31-23. UNR’s Malik Story hit a three-pointer on the following possession and another PV turnover led to a 12-point (35-23) margin by the Wolfpack less than two minutes in. Panther fresh-

man Jimmie Duplessis closed the gap to 10 with a jumper but the lead quickly went back to 12 after UNR’s Olek Czyz hit two free throws after being fouled at the 17:24 mark. Both teams went cold offensively from that point as neither would score until a three-point play from UNR’s Jerry Evans with 13:46 remaining. Outside of free throws from Chapman and Munks, the Panthers remained cold as they were held without a field goal until the 8:07 mark on Meadows’ jumper. Nevada took advantage and upped its lead to as much as 21 and held the Panthers at bay the remainder of the way. Munks led the Panthers in scoring for the second straight game with 16 points. Ryan Gesiakowski followed with seven while Chapman led the team in rebounds with six.

BRIYONNA LEWIS-PV By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Prairie View, Texas-While watching the homecoming game up on the hill we spotted the Army R.O.T. C. and talked with the Master Sergeant to find out who was one of top students. He chose Briyonna Lewis a lovely and talented sophomore from New Orleans, Louisiana. Briyonna is holding a 3.6 G.P.A. and is a Medic in the Nursing program and says she is set on becoming an Army Nurse Officer. The charming daughter of Glenda and Gordon Lewis went on to say her mother was a Nurse Officer in the U.S. Air Force. “I learned so much from watching my mom and I’m certain that’s what I want to be and I’m not going to stop until I get it done”.

However most of her time is spent preparing herself to be an Army Hospital Nurse Officer. “All my life that’s what I wanted to be and being self driven I’m confident I will get it done”. It is especially rewarding for me to see a student in her second year of college knowing her goals in life and working so hard to make it happen.

As we talked more with the friendly student she opened up more by telling us she is selfmotivated to set a great example for her 13 year old sister. “I’ve got to set the stage for her because we are living in tough times and I and notice those mood swings and I know what I’m dealing with”.

We moved over to talk with Lewis about President Obama and the impact it had on her to see him become our nation’s first African American Chief of Staff. “In a word I would have to say confidence because it gives us a reason to feel good about going for some of the top jobs in the country now”. On the subject of what would she do differently if she had a chance to live her life over again Lewis had a simply reply. “I wouldn’t change anything because I’ve been always able to learn from my mistakes and move forward”. Lewis describes herself as a confident and goal oriented, but finds time to be have fun also. Fact is she says the Army R.O.T.C. is like a family and the group is small enough for everyone to get to know each other. If I were in the Army it would be good know someone like Briyonna would be waiting for me if I was wounded in action! AGE IS ONLY A NUMBER TO MRS. MAXINE WILLIAMS Born in Plum, Texas is 1916, Maxine Williams is a living legend and to her age is only a number. For more than nine decades she has graced God’s Green Earth and made the most of it. Williams is currently a member at Jordan Grove Missionary Baptist Church where the Rev. Danny Davis is the pastor. Davis made the news when he became the first black to start at quarterback for the Houston Cougars football team. Mrs. Williams goes about her daily life and keeping God with her along the way. When we asked her about turning 95 years of age and still able to get around and the many blessings she has lived to see she had a simple answer. “The Lord wakes me up every morning and I thank him and go about my way serving him every step of the way.

Her restaurant was visited by the big time entertainers including the likes of Lighten’ Hopkins, Eugene Moody, Johnny Clyde Copeland, Andy Williams as well as Eddie “Clean Head Vinson, Milton Larkin, Kinney Abair, Big Robert Smith, Joe Guitar Hughes, Elmo Robinson, Lady D, Clarence Green, Leonard “Low down” Brown, J. R. Richards and Texas Johnny Brown to name a few. After Rudolph Taylor introduced Williams to a recipe for enchiladas and it became her special dish, people came from all over the country to eat them. “They

use to call me Ms El Nado and sometimes I think they didn’t even know my name. For decades Williams ran this business and took an active part in the scene of Houston. She went on to be honored by Black History Chronicle Legends in Business in 1997 along with John Chase and others. The event took place at the Worthan Theater and Rev. Davis was on hand to introduce Mrs. Williams. Being an Eastern Star in Lodge 432 Mrs. Williams is blessed and takes full advantages of her life and is truly loved by all who come in contact with her. Thanks to Mrs. Sandra Germany, we learned of Mrs. Williams and went to visit with her and found her to be quite charming. After moving to Houston from Plum, Texas Williams attended Jack Yates High School graduating in 1935. Fifteen years later she opened El Nado restaurant on Ennis street near Riverside Hospital in Houston’s Historic Third Ward. It was her business for more than 52 years before shutting down in 2002. “I served many customers and I truly enjoyed operating the restaurant and served Houston

MRS. SANDRA GERMANY COOKING UP A FEAST By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View While traveling with her grandmother at age 13 Mrs. Sandra Germany developed a love for cooking and to this very day she is still cooking up a feast. Spending most of her time in a wheel chair Mrs, Germany still slangs out some of the World’s Best Sweet Potato Pies and make some of the finest Candid Jams. “My grandmother told me you can make a living as a cook but you must not tell anyone you secret recipes”. While attending San Antonio Wheatley Sandra took her

grandmother’s advice and came to Houston and started out cooking at many of the city’s finest eateries. She worked with Bill Rosemore and Willie Terry and places like Cozy Kitchen and many of the Fifth Ward’s finest restaurants back in the day. “I tried for the most part to work in the black communities but once I was the cook at Tony Bennett’s Spaigettas House in the Memorial area”. Mrs. Germany gave praised to Mrs. Maxine Williams who ran El Nado Restaurant for more than 52 years. “Oh I’m no one special but I think you should write about my Friend Maxine

THE COLLEGE SPORTS REPORT Jerry Woodley On Nov 11, 2011 the college basketball season began for me. Why you ask? Because, there was a double header of women’s basketball game within driving distance of each other. The basketball day started out on the campus of Texas Southern University. They were hosting ‘Kids Day’. They had around 3,000 middle school and elementary kids to witness the game. It was the season and home opener for the Lady Tigers of TSU. They were hosting the Norfolk ST Spartans of the MEAC. Speed, transition buckets, and rebounding by Norfolk St gave them the push they needed to finish off TSU 80-58. TSU Coach Broughton, “really disappointed with our transition defense, most definitely our post play, we gave up a lot of baskets inside,…thought we would be

able to put two halves together like we started the 1st half. I can assure you, we have point guards, and that’s a great start. Now they’ve got to understand their roles. I know there’s a lot of pressure on them there will be a lot of more pressure on them to turn the corner and run the team. Because if they’ll do their job it just makes everything go easier…” commented after the game about the changes that needed to be made as a team to become more competitive. On Sundays you’ll find Mrs. Germany down at Lilly Grove Missionary Baptist Church where the Rev. Terry K. Anderson is the pastor. “That’s my church home for the past 30 years and I’m proud to be a member there. This Thanksgiving Mrs. Germany baked some Sweet Potato Pies as well as Pecan Pies. PV never forced the issue, so they never got to the line over this time period. End of the half was 35-29, with Rice leading.
