Behind The Wheel With THE KING (Arthur Prayther)
2013 FORD EXPLORER SPORT Bastrop, Louisiana-As the old saying, goes over the river and through the woods. That’s the way we went all the way to Northeast Louisiana to help promote the Winston Family Reunion celebrating the life of Sister Francis Prather (A True Missionary Baptist). The new Ford Explorer Sport AWD with Ecoboast 3.6 liter V6 engine gave good power and fairly good economy as well. With a posted 18 miles per gallon average, the new Ford Explorer rolls up and down the hill of the trip with ease. Keep in mind it equipped with hill start and the vehicle engine automatically adjusts to steep hills as well as descending valleys. Needless to say we were impressed as we made the trip and thanks to ecoboast it worked out very well and it was very light on the wallet just 28 dollars worth of fuel from Houston to Tenaha, Texas which is just about half way to Bastrop,
Louisiana. Loaded down with Winston Family T-shirts and things we got a real feel for what the vehicle rides like with a pretty good load inside. The rear seats 50/50 fold flat made for more space and with the trip taking roughly five and one half hours you wanted to make sure things were in place. Not once did we have to stop to stretch because the 10-way power driver seat worked fine and I was able to adjust it just right and never had to adjust it again. There is no one you can make a trip like this without a good quality sound system to enjoy on the way. Well the new Explorer Sport AWD came with a Sony Audio System complete with 390 watts and 12 speakers all over the unit making for some concert hall type sounds. Man you talk about enjoying a trip! Excited by the fact we were honoring my late mother made it all more rewarding.
The leather trimmed bucket seats with a near perfect contour made sitting and paddling a lot easier and with the perfect fit for mirrors with the indicator alerts when someone was along side you made me really feel safe. The Ford Explorer scored a 5star rating by the NHTSA and that’s going some for a mid-size SUV. Rain sensing wipers truly came in handy by the time we made it to I-20 because it was drizzling of rain all the way to Monroe, Louisiana. As the years have gone by it’s truly amazing how much Ford added to their vehicles and historically Fords are known for their quiet riding styles. Clearly the new Explorer Sport complete with a rear spoiler and dual exhaust chrome tips sticking out the back turned some heads as we drove through the country side. Time and time again we mention just how much improvement from year in and year out automakers have made to their product lines. When the SUV became a popular segment of the automotive industry it was the Ford Explorer that took the lead and it looks like it’s not ready to give it up anytime soon. Some observes would credit Land Rover for some of Ford Success the last few years but we do know the Explorer has
been a standard setter for the mid-size SUV for a very long time. A quality GPS navigation system even pickup small villages like Oak Ridge and Mer Rouge, Louisiana with directions and the likes. Power hits the ground rolling on performance tires fancy wheels making one believe we had after market items to dress the sporty Explorer. Fact is we had to explain to my nephews that those are standard rims and tire package on this sporty SUV. Fact is the new Ford Explorer AWD looked like it had just left
Page 2
an after market shop to get a face-lift. Again we say this is clearly a great move on automakers these days to deliver their vehicles with all the extras that people are paying big bucks for. Over the past few years we haven’t tested many Fords but we are told that going to change in the coming months. We can safely say to our readers we are looking forward to getting more Ford products to report to you about. Nearly 27 years ago it was Ford who introduced us to the program in the first place.

THE A-NOTE with Aaron Watson At this point we have past the first trimester, the decision to set a goal, setting the infrastructure, and having self honesty. Though these are very important parts of success they are the easiest. They are the easiest because at this point no one can tell if you have tried any of this, and no one can tell if you haven't been successful at this point. If you know your goal, informed your shareholders that a change is coming and you have strengthened yourself with self honesty, now it's time to act. Is your plan in order? Not just any plan but the plan that is going to change your life. Here is how you test your plan for life changing potential. If you don't have to give up something to implement your plan, it's not life
changing. If you don't loose sleep wondering how to make it work, your plan is not life changing. Finally, if you are not scared to death of it for no particular reason, it is not life changing. With every life changing plan there is risks involved. If you don't complete your plan timely you can overcome that, you can overcome loosing a little money and time. What you can not overcome is building a habit of quitting. The first time you quit anything that someone else can see, you have made it easier to quit the next time. If you start, then you quit, staying focused will become harder and harder. So how do you defend yourself against all of the risk that can
INTRODUCTION TO PHASE TWO arise when you start your plan in motion? I call it mental self identification; the ability to group things in categories without being emotional. This brings us to the only two issues you will face on the road to changing your life, "Will" and "Skill". No matter how complex things seem to be it comes down to these two things and these two things only. That's right ladies and gentlemen that's it, either a "Will" issue or a " Skill" issue. To understand "Will and Skill", you must also understand that, barring some type of mental or physical defect, we are only created equally not equal. Just because someone else is a success at something, it doesn't "Give you the right" to copy without paying a price. Your plan must be unique to you and your particular skill set because there is a high price to pay, up to

and including failure, for the person that is a follower of a follower. Don't worry you will know if you are following a leader because they will encourage you to do what you feel and provide you with things to think about when making decisions. A leader does not try to convince you just guide you slightly. DEFI I G THE TWO The "Will" issue; if you are not willing to make sacrifices that stretch the limits of your relationships, if you are not willing to work twice as hard for half the money, and if you are not willing to take criticism, then you simply do not have the "Will". Please note: the tragedy is not the lack of "Will" but the tragedy is not having the mental self identification to get out the moment you recognize it. The "Skill" issue is having the work ethic and ability to do the task at hand. You have gone through training your whole life that has prepared you for your purpose, embrace it. Passion is the only requirement. Allow me to test your "Will". If you feel you don't have a purpose in life and you think you are lost, consider this. Maybe
you don't think you have a purpose, maybe you think you are lost and maybe you think there is no way out. You think you have no "Skill" and you think you have no "Will". You think you are nothing compared to people who have success. This is only true because you think it. Change what you think, it will change your mind set which will change your skill set which will change your life. Where there is a "Will" there is a way.
Allow me to test your "Skill". If you feel that you can't do what it takes to be successful consider this. You don't have a degree, you don't have the experience, you don't have the knowledge. That's not skill , that's a want. You were born, no strings attached, with all the tools necessary to get all of these things mentioned above and much more. Skill is acquired over time and no human being or institution has the right to tell you when you have them or not.
Over the next month make sure you have the "Will" and the "Skill". Going forward the next three articles will be about acting on your goal as I reveal my plan to change someone's life.

CADILLAC ATS 2.OT PREMIUM LIVES UP TO BILLING By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View After hearing a great deal of talk about the new Cadillac ATS we had the pleasure of testing it. We can safely say it lived up to its billing and perhaps a bit past it. To begin with the 272 horse powered Ecotec 2.o Liter Turbo VVT DI engine with Hydramatic 6 L45 six-speed transmission made for a great deal of driving fun. Yet the vehicle was a bit easy on the wallet with 24 miles per gallon average with this computing out at 21 miles per gallon in the city and 31 on the highway. Both the engine and transmission are built right here in the USA. Let talk warranties since we are talking about a vehicle with a price tag of over 49 Grand. Cadillac has the Cadillac Shield 4-year/50,000 miles bumper-tobumper warranty and 6year/70,000 mile power train limited warranty, 4-year/50,000 premium care maintenance plus 6-year/70,000 mile courtesy transportation, 6-year/ 70,000 roadside assistance and throw in 12 months Onstar direction and connections with automatic crash response, turn by turn navigation and Onstar remote link. A performance algorithm tap shift suspension with performance magnetic ride control and limited slip differential makes for some nifty moves when you are behind the wheel of this baby. ZF premium electric variable steering rounds out the handling package. Power rolls to the pavement on summer front run flat tires circulating around a set of 18-inch machined-finish aluminum wheels. Brembo performance front brakes brings this baby to a swift smooth stop and stabilitrak-stability control with traction control makes sure of that. Once you are inside the new ATS you are treated to handcrafted cut an sewn interior with leather seating surfaces and performance driver 12-way seat with 10-way seat for front passenger. If you haven’t notice we have used the word performance a few times in this review. Well that because it’s the best way to describe the new Cadillac. A leather wrapped steering wheel with shifter and magnesium paddle shifters and pedals sport alloy. When it comes to safety you know off the bat you are going to have everything including knee air bags up front as well as
a driver aware package complete with rear vision camera. An 8-inch full-color touch display with AM/FM Stereo, CD player Bose Surround Sound
complete with the works...all the way down the dual stainless steel with bright polished exhaust tips, this Cadillac is ready to roll.

TERRAIN DENALI AWD POWERFUL AND ECONOMICALLY SOUND ALSO By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View As the years go by the automakers are working harder to make sure you get the best of both worlds when it comes to new product lines. Take for example the new 2013 GMC Terrain Denali AWD, normally when you get a vehicle that is powered by a 301 horse power engine the mileage is not that great. But thanks to new engineering vehicle with good horse power can still produce quality economical numbers as well. The new Terrain AWD is powered by a 3.6 Liter V-6 direct injection engine and mated to a Hydra-Matic 6T70 six- speed automatic transmission. This produces 301 horses at 6800 RPM and 272 lbs per foot of torque at 4800 RPM. Now it tows 3,500 pounds safely and still manages to get 17 miles per gallon in the city and 24 miles per gallon on the highway. With a 20.9 gallon tank we got through our week long test and did not have to add fuel. Let not forget this is 14 per cent more horse power and 22 per cent more torque than the previous V6 and still manages to get the same 24 miles per gallon. It just so happened we noticed the extra power and yet the fuel consumption was the same as the model we tested a couple model years ago. This goes to show it pays to read the fine print because from year to year GMC is making their products more economical and yet more powerful. However the standard engine for the Terrain is a proven 2.4 Liter 4 cylinder engine and it too is mated to a 6speed automatic transmission. This vehicle is built in Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada and scored a 4star rating from the NHTSA. Getting 5-star rating for the driver and 4-star for front passenger in frontal crashes and 4-star front seat and 5-star rear seat in side crashes. The rollover rating came in at 4-star for this vehicle the EPA class as a compact SUV. But fact is the Terrain has 63.9 cubic feet of Max cargo room and there is nothing compact about that. For those of you who really want to know 70 per cent of this vehicle parts comes from the United States and Canada. A full array of safety features including cross traffic alert and roll over protection for all rows of seating. Some of the notable features are the Denali signature chrome
grille, body-color fascia, unique headlamps/tail lamps and 19inch wheel loaded with chrome. But our test vehicle came with 18-inch satin chrome clad aluminum wheels and man it makes you think about the old days. You find yourself looking at the window when you are passing by a glass building to see as you rolling along. Other items such as rear seat entertainment system and 8-way power seat just adds to what is already an outstanding buy. Throw in power rear tail gate lift and you could easily think you are in for more than 42 Grand our test vehicle price tag came too. In closing you know we have to add the 7 inch color touch screen and a premium 8-speaker sound system seals the deal.

LINEMAN OF THE WEEK-CAMERON DAUGHTRY-COBRAS By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Wearing jersey number 99, Cameron Daughtry worked hard on both sides of the line as he lead the freshmen Cobras to their 3rd win in 4 games this year. Daughtry is in the 3rd grade at McDougal Elementary school and likes Science and Math best in the classroom. The big lineman busted up several running plays against the Tigers and lead the way blocking for their two scores as the Cobras won 13-0. “I think we can go all the way to the Super Bowl and win it also
if everyone keep working hard. This is the team coached by the legendary Walter Penrice and this is his 35th year with the Cobras. When we asked who was his favorite NFL player Cameron quickly mention last year’s NFL Defensive Player of the Year JJ Watt of the Houston Texans. He added he likes Arian Foster and Andre Johnson of the Texans also. This two-way lineman is a rare thing to see these days and believe me this kid makes plays on both sides of the ball all game long!
ment this year. You would have to go back to the days of Willie Brown a multi-talented player who went on to win two Grey Cups in Canada to find so much excitement in Bull Dog land. Hamm certainly is leading the defensive charge and by the way when you look at the photo you will see he wears jersey number 99 that should tell you something about this kid. We’re looking into getting over to see the Bull Dogs again and do a full spread on their return to challenge for a district title.

Kids often say exactly what they are thinking. Sometimes, it’s cute other times it can be unnerving. As we get older we learn how to curtail some of our thoughts from escaping our lips; some are better at it than others; some people have no filter and some people dilute that thoughts and opinions so much that they barely have a conversation. I’m all about balance but often times its been a struggle not to let people know exactly what I’m thinking or how I feel. As each day goes by and I’m learning that somethings are better left unsaid. It often would make me feel so much better to get things off my chest but I’m continuously learning to appreciate the art of silence, thinking before I speak. Sometimes getting things off your chest does not always resolve a problem, in often cases it adds to them. I use to think that not getting a person “told” often made a person look meek but I’ve come to understand the
strength it takes to be silent. Some situations often resolve themselves without you standing on a soap box screaming for a resolution; it also gives you time to think things through before making a hasty decision. It teaches you how to really let go of trying to fix every situation, or get closure in a book that has been shut and closed long ago. It leads you down a path where you can find peace within yourself and not in all the wrong external places. Silence is greater than gold, it’s strength that you didn’t know you had and a muscle that will get stronger when exercised in the right way. So take a deep breath, close your eyes and count to ten. Find your happy place and know that every situation does not have to be addressed. In this you will find that you will not be moved by people, places or things. But firmly anchored in peace.

VETERAN OF THE MONTH – EARL “BILL” LOUIS YOUNG
Out and About with John Engel World War II ended in 1946. That is 67 years ago. If a young man enlisted at the end of the War and was only 18 at the time he began service he would be at least 85 years old.. Veterans from this conflict are dying at the rate of approximately 600 per day and only about one million of the 16 million men and women that served are still with us today. (Source: Department of Veteran’s Affairs.) I feel it is extremely important to preserve the memories and stories of those that fought for our freedom in this devastating war. I recently attended the funeral of Earl “Bill” Louis Young a WWII avy veteran, recipient of TWO Purple Hearts and The Bronze Star. During the event I spoke with his close friend and neighbor, David Borg. Davis was so moved by our conversation he agreed to contribute his thoughts about Bill. Here is what he had to say: We recently lost Bill Young, a Navy veteran who piloted a landing craft onto the beach at Palau. Listening to his story of life from his beginnings as a farm boy from Nacogdoches County, to his migration to Houston at sixteen, to his enlistment, deployment, and return to civilian life was a fascinating tour through the history of his part of the United States in depression, war, and peace time. Let’s look at his service. Bill joined the Navy in 1942 at age seventeen and was quickly on his way to his basic training in California. On completion he volunteered for unspecified volunteer service to Camp Pendleton. This was to be the start of his mighty adventure because before long he was trained as a demolitions expert and as the helmsman of a Higgins Landing Craft that would hit the beaches. He knew he was becoming a part of
something very big, and it was thrilling to him to be part of a highly trained and motivated team. He got his nickname there from his buddies – Ely – from his initials, and for the duration that was what they called him. He was a valued buddy, young, and tough as nails, capable, and ready to do whatever it took to get the job done. Bill was very impressed with the Pacific Navy, and he was based for a good bit of time at Ulithi Atoll. He said it was almost more than a person could comprehend to see all the ships at anchorage there. His location was one of the small islands on the north end of the atoll. Toward the end of the war a kamikaze nearly got them when the pilot dove his plane into their mess hall, evidently mistaking it for a carrier. “It was nothing short of amazing how fast the Seabees had the mess hall rebuilt,” he said, “just three or four days and it was back to normal.” If you do some research you can find an account of that incident. For Bill and his buddies training was relentless, for good cause. It was to end up saving many lives, and it made the dangerous work of beach landing under fire disciplined and effective. Even so it took immense courage and self-discipline to carry on the invasions. “Yeh, we felt we were seven feet tall and bulletproof,” he laughed in later years. He was to find out otherwise, but the training served them well and created an enormous and invaluable esprit de corps in their unit. No small part of what Bill and his buddies learned was how good they could be, and how well they could handle adversity. Bill’s biggest invasion was the landing at Palau, and as he said, it was bigger and louder and worse than anything imaginable
if you haven’t been through it yourself. It was there that Bill was very seriously wounded. His recollections of the time were vivid with him to the end. In the last year of his life he read With the Old Breed which he said was as accurate account of the battle as he knew of. It is not often remembered the hardships of that battle: temperatures of 115, lack of good water, running out of supplies and ammunition, the sheer horror of what it was. The US Marines say it was the worst battle they were in during World War II, and Bill knew it for a personal fact. He damn well earned his Bronze Star. When the invasion kicked off, Bill and his crew loaded the Marines into their landing craft from the troop ship they called the “Mother Hen”, and then formed up in line abreast to make the run to the beach. The big naval artillery of the battleships were firing, and he remembered that nothing he’d heard before or since was nearly as loud as those big guns. They made the run in, and just one wave short of the beach the landing craft next to them was hit by a shell and blown completely to pieces. Bill said he thought it caused him to flinch, with the result his boat was lifted on the wave high up onto the beach. At least his Marines got ashore with dry feet, but his boat was hung up too far onto the sand and he couldn’t retract it into the water for a return to the Mother Hen. His only option, and those of his crew, was to dive into the nearest available fox hole and tough it out. Bill ended up with a gunnery sergeant in the hole, and for three days they endured. Bill had a carbine for armament, but he was not really equipped as an infantry soldier. No matter, he was one by default. On the third day, a Japanese soldier made a desperation charge at them, and Bill’s gunny sergeant buddy waited far too long to shoot. The result was the enemy soldier was able to lob a grenade into the fox hole, wounding Bill pret-

ty badly. The enemy soldier died at the edge of their hole. That’s close. Bill was awarded both The Purple Heart twice and The Bronze Star for his service contributions, both of which he was modest about, and yet proud of. He felt he’d really given something important to his buddies, his Navy, his country. Bill was evacuated to the hospital ship where he lay for ten days before being operated on. Since part of his wounds was in the lungs the medical team passed him by for treatment until they were certain he would survive. It wasn’t a sure thing until the tenth day, and then they got busy on him. Bill had an amazing constitution and ability to heal about three times as fast as anyone else, so he went back to his unit after a short period of recovery on the hospital ship. For thirty days after he got back to his unit he was put on light duty, and then it was on to training for the invasion of Japan. Okinawa, the next scheduled invasion, was one his unit wasn’t scheduled to take part in, but they would have drawn the assignment for landing on the Japanese mainland. They knew it would be bad, possibly as bad as or worse than Palau. Thankfully the war ended before that invasion had to take place, and after two long, long years Bill returned home as a battle toughed veteran, age nineteen. When the hostilities ceased there was still a lot of work to do. Bill participated directly in the Japanese surrender of Yap Island. During the War the Japanese occupied all the islands in the area and each had to be formally surrendered to the Allies. As it turned out, the Japanese soldiers were ready, willing and helpful in the transition process. Many were literally starving to death, war weary and knew that they were defeated. They accepted the reality of it, and in turn made the choice to cooperate and start the process of rebuilding a shattered world. Bill was assigned to take his landing craft with another and follow a Japanese boat through the mine field into the Yap harbor to begin the formalities. Yap was ferociously bombed by the Americans and the recovery was somewhat slow. It was made quicker and easier by the cooperation that the Japanese Army showed toward their American counterparts. Bill recounted that the moment when the Japanese
flag came down and the Stars and Stripes were raised was the proudest moment of the war for him. All those brutal years of sacrifice, hard work , the horror of combat and separation fro home were over and he was there to witness it. He knew he would soon return home to his family, become a civilian and start his working life. He was ready! Bill told of three amusing incidents that happened in the service. The first had to do with a buddy who took an extraordinary amount of time polishing his carbine to a bright shiny silvery glow by abrading the dark finish using sand. As he showed it off after polishing it their chief came along, saw what he’d done, snatched the carbine away from its proud owner, and slapped mud all over it. He proceeded to ream Bill’s buddy out for destroying the camouflage finish, and told him to get it dark and dirty again. The boys had a good laugh at their buddy’s expense. Bill was the recipient of his chief’s ire in another escapade. He and his crew got their two can beer ration, and they really wanted to have it cold. They knew they could cool the beer effectively if they used their boat’s fire extinguishers to spray the cans down, after which they quite enjoyed the deliciously cool beer. It was a great treat during the war, but when the chief inspected the boat later and found the fire extinguishers expended he knew exactly what had been done.

VETERAN OF THE MONTH – EARL “BILL” LOUIS YOUNG Bill and his pals were called on the carpet to the extent that the taste of the beer sort of soured in their memories. The last very humorous incident he related had to do with something that happened between the native women and one of the Navy Chaplains. The Chaplain was of a real blue nose, and he was upset the native women were bare chested all the time. It was normal for them, much to the delight of the service personnel, but the Chaplain decided he had to do his duty and take temptation out of the way. With considerable effort he requisitioned tee-shirts for all the women, and with much ceremony and show gave them out as
gifts one day. He felt he was really protecting everyone and was satisfied all was well. However the next morning when the GI’s came out the laughter started at one spot and went rippling out across the base as each new man saw how the women had altered their new garments to satisfy themselves. They had on their new shirts but each had cut out two holes to allow their breasts to hang out, and the GIs had one of the best laughs of the year. The Chaplain had his comeuppance!
nerves, and they sent him for a thirty day rest, relaxation, and recuperation assignment in Florida. As he said, all he had to do was sleep, eat anything at any hour of the day or night, and just depressurize from the war. On discharge he took advantage of the GI Bill in a way few people know about. Thanks to the GI bill he got his high school diploma in his first year out. He was very grateful for that opportunity to complete his formal education and receive his hard won diploma.
Even after his return he wasn’t quite finished with the service. Before he was discharged, the medical team realized he still had a lot of combat stress and
So we miss our friend Bill, a man who made history, and was very much part of it. He was a proud Navy man, a patriot, and a buddy and friend. We salute
you, Bill. You are missed. A final note, if your family has a veteran of a major war like this hero, sit down and listen to his or her stories. We are rapidly saying goodbye to those that fought in World War II, Korea, Viet am and eves the Gulf War.
Stories such as these are invaluable and we must remember their contribution to our freedom. It is people like Bill that returned from the conflict and led normal lives. The experiences and memories are what make out country great.
JUSTIN GRADNEY-STEPHENS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
STUDENT OF THE WEEK Here we go again with our Fiesta Student of the Week and what a smooth talking little guy. He’s the handsome four year old son of Ashlynn and Justin Gradney and a member of the Studewood Cobras 4-0 Flag team. Coming from good stock Justin is the grandson of Juanita and Joe Gradney and the son of former Studewood Cobra Justin Gradney. Playing on the offensive line for the flag team Justin is happy to be a member of the Cobras flag team and says they are playing well this season. Moments after their 18-0 win over the Rosewood Tigers he
told us he feels good about his school and says the teachers there makes him eager to learn. In the classroom he loves Science and Math and his parents says he loves playing football with the Cobras and he also plays basketball in his spare time.
Having spent time at Lakewood Church Justin says he loves the singing and praising God on Sundays and says he feels it’s important that everyone has God in their life. When asked if he would change anything at Stephen Elementary school if they made him Principal. Justin replied he thinks the school has good management and for the most part he gets along very well with all his
teachers and fellow students. On the subject of describing himself Justin says he considers himself a Real person and takes care of business in life just like he does when he is blocking for the Cobras undefeated flag team. With a goal of growing up and playing freshman football ball for the Cobras this four year old is having the time of his life. He added if feels pretty good walking down the Hall at Stephens
Elementary school knowing he had just blocked to keep his cobras flag team unbeaten in 2013. In closing we couldn’t help but ask him if he knew anything about politic and if President Obama was doing a pretty good job. “Yes sir I’d say he doing pretty good because even I get sick sometimes and it’s good to know he is fighting for good health care for everybody”.
After family members took him to the mall and he spotted the rock climbing area he is looking forward to going Rock Climbing. “When I saw that I knew I was going to want to do that when I get bigger”. He also enjoys soccer and he plays well in all sports.

WINSTON FAMILY REUNION: CELEBRATING THE LIFE OF SISTER FRANCIS WINSTON-PRATHER By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Bastrop, Louisiana-On Labor Day the decendents of the late Francis Winston-Prather paid their respect to one of the world’s finest missionary baptists. Born January 20, 1912 the youngest of 14 children of the late Mary Seay and Minnus Winston, Sister Francis went on to give birth to 12 children over the years. Walking across a pipeline to attend school in Mer Rouge Louisiana sister Francis went about her way and never allowed life to beat her down. She quietly passed away on January 2, 1999 leaving one of the finest example of what a true Baptist should be. I’ll always remember my mother for making me a man at the age of 15 and kept in touch to make sure and I didn’t go backward. Sister Francis lives on today through her 7 children, 34 grandchildren, 49 great grand children and 50 great great grandchildren. We are working on a full story line on Sister Francis and probably will release it around Black History Month. But for the time being let’s just
say helping others all during her adult life is why we were honoring her in the first place. The Winston Family is one of North Louisiana biggest families and we just felt it was time to try and pull it all together. Please keep reading A King-Size View for more news on this matter. Winston Family Members came to Bastrop from as far away as Evansville Indiana, and Louisville Kentucky to name a couple of places. Not to mention Houston and Dallas Texas. Local star Kimberly Adams who by the way is a Winston did a couple of numbers on the mike to wake up the crowd and get them in the mood to enjoy the day. Soul and blues legend and gospel singer Brother Ernie Johnson came down to sing for us and the crowd gathered at the Bastrop Municipal Center enjoyed him very much. The family members fixed finger food and we had soft drinks and cake to cap the evening. Emma Williams made some outstanding meatballs while Loretha Hill made some great deviled eggs and Carolyn Harris took care of the table arrangements and did a wonderful job of making it a great day for all people who
came out to the event. My longtime friend Larry (Teddy) Perry was also a big help as well as my brother-in-law L. A. Williams always willing to help. Brother George Robinson led us in prayer and Lo Hill did the welcome. We also honored Mrs. Willie S. Neal the member of the Winston Family who has the longest tenure here on earth and she enjoyed herself to the utmost. Thank God for her because she gives us such wisdom and knowledge of the family tree. It’s a honor to visit with her.

My sister Irene from Evansville, Indiana came down and brought two of her daughters Vern and Valerie both of which we were meeting for the first time. What a blessing to say the least and thanks Bettye Ruth Smith who made the trip from Houston and shared in the reunion. Irene Winston-Taylor another of our first cousins we were meeting for the first time is planning a 3 day affair next year and we will keep you posted on that. We spoke on our mother and
what she meant to not just us but the entire community. Ace Watkins was a most gracious host and made us feel as if the building was ours. We at King Arthur’s Productions want to thank PPW and DJ Banks for a lively entertaining sound system and promotion of the event on Soul 97.3 FM radio in Monroe. For those of you who didn’t come out you don’t know what you missed!

COBRAS TAKE FOUR GAMES FROM TIGERS By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Last year the Rosewood Tigers beat the Studewood Cobras in the Super Bowl. But this time around the Cobras came out hard and walked away from Settegast with all four games in their annual regular season matchups. It started as the unbeaten Cobras flag team won 18-0 over a hard fighting Tigers squad. As the weather held up even with a light rain spotting through the area the Freshman
Cobras won 13-0. Next up was the J V team taking the game with a 13-7 overtime win over the Tigers. The Varsity Cobras won with a 8-0 shut out win and they went back to Studewood making it clear they are still the King of the Hill. But you know Walter Penrice Junior and his Rosewood Tigers will to hoping to catch up with Cobras again even if it has to be in the Super Bowl. When you look at the big picture
when Leagues are struggling to keep teams together the Cobras numbers are up this year. With a team of outstanding new young coaches the Cobras are ready to roll as they compete for the 38th season. Year in and year out the Cobras are a force to be reckon with and this year is no differ-

THIS WEEK IN HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL - REAGAN BULLDOGS SNAP TO 2-0 IN DISTRICT By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View My oh My it has been a while since the Reagan Bulldogs have been really in the hunt for a district title. But it would appear coach Stephen Dixon Sr. has these Dogs snapping their way toward a serious run for the district title in class 4A. Beating Wheatley 63-14 this past weekend the Dogs moved to 2-0 and 3-1 overall. Tavon Dodd rushed for 233 yards and scored three times with only 9 carries. The week before the Dogs pounded North Forest as Eric Duran threw for 230 yards and 4 touchdowns clearly showing the Bulldogs can beat you in the air as well as one the ground.
Yates in the 9th Annual Fiesta Booker-Bryant Memorial Classic on Friday October 25th at Delmar kickoff at 7.00PM. Some feel it could be for the district class 3A title. Speaking of the Jack Yates Lions, they roared past Wheatley
and North Forest before losing a close one to Madison and had a bye this week. When it comes to top teams nothing has changed the Katy Tigers are rolling right along after destroying their opponents in two of their first three games.
So for the HISD class 4A teams if you hear some growling better watch out because the Reagan Bulldogs are right around the corner and these Dogs will bite.
North Shore is rolling right along after pounding Madison 51-0. Westside ran past Kempner 72-13 for their 3rd win in 4 outings. Elkins whipped Westbury 74-7. Cy-Fair is unbeaten at 3-0
after beating Langham Creek 14-11 in a thriller. MacArthur is 3-1 after they ran past Galveston Ball 34-10. Clear Spring won a slugfest over Eisenhower 53-50 for their 3rd win in 4 outings.

BISHOP JOE SIMON BIOGRAPHY HISTORICAL BACKGROU D
• BIRTHPLACE: SIMMESPORT, LOUISIANA • As a young man in the 1950’s, I moved to the Oakland, Richmond, San Francisco, CA Bay area, where I continued going to church and singing with local quartet groups. Shortly after my quartet years, I began to sing with R&B groups. The last R&B group that I sang with fired me. I then began singing Rhythm and Blues on my own, making $5.50 per night, working only two nights per week, in local night clubs, Times were so hard that I couldn’t pay my rent so I had to literally sleep in a chicken coop. I owned only one suit, and I could not afford to get it cleaned, so I would get it pressed only. On the nights of a show, I would borrow my friend, Roland William’s shoes to complete my outfit. (When I became a big Rhythm & Blues star, I always tried to give Roland money for lending me his shoes, but he would never accept the money. I never knew what became of Roland Williams; I would love to see and hear from him). • After sleeping in the chicken coop for more than two years, I met Mr. Gary Thompson who owned the Hush Recording label. Another teenaged friend who helped me while I was liv-
ing in the chicken coop was Carl Vories. Carl would sneak and give his lunch money to me that was given to him by his parents. Mr. Gary Thompson/Hush Recording label were very instrumental in recording my first hit record, “My Adorable One.” Carl Vories helped me put the local band together for this recording; I produced the music and record. “My Adorable One” led me from the chicken coop to the Apollo Theater in New York City. The rest is history. MUSICAL JOUR EY

DURING THE MID 1980’S, JOE BECAME MORE AND MORE DISENFRANCHISED WITH THE MUSIC INDUSTRY AND THE LIFESTYLE THAT SURROUNDED MANY ASPECTS OF IT, HE BEGAN A SEARCH TO REDISCOVER WHO HE REALLY WAS AS A PERSON, HE BEGAN TO READ THE WORD OF GOD, AND SLOWLY HIS NEW CALLING IN LIFE TOOK FORM. JOE RELATES THE EXPERIENCE: “I had everything a man could want in life, in a material way, but it didn’t fill this certain void I kept experiencing. The defining moment came when I read stunning words of the Apostle Paul-a very affluent, brilliant, and scholarly man of his day, who had studied at the University of Rome and spoke fluently fourteen languages, Paul realized that as great as they were, his personal accomplishments were not very important as he wrestled with the questions of eternity, I was astonished when I read Philippians 3:8-“I count it all as dung.” It was then that I saw myself. Suddenly all the things that I had accomplished in life were put into perspective. I even wrote a song about the experience entitled, “Things Didn’t Save Me.” My journey had begun, after a period of intense bible study and preparation; I preached my first sermon as a minister to 4,500 people in Alexandria, Louisiana on Saturday, August 6, 1988, an event that was reported in Jet Magazine, I continue to travel and minister to this day with my Evangelistic Community Crusades. Today I can attest that my greatest joy in life was the day I met Christ. KEY OTE SPEAKER & LEADERSHIP • JANUARY 21, 1991, KEYNOTE SPEAKER AT THE MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. TRIBUTE

WHAT IS TRUTH? MIND NOT HIGH THINGS Dear reader, as always, it is again a blessing to be able to share with you some scriptural truths. We can never thank Mr. Prayther enough. Truly, there are many in the religious world today proclaiming to belong to Christ, “Christians”: Loving this world and enjoying the things that are in it. Most believe it is a blessing to have all these earthly, materialistic things (secular). We believe this is true, but blessed by whom? In Luke the 4th chapter verses 1-8 these things were offered to Jesus Christ by the devil. The devil made it clear that these earthly, materialistic things had been delivered unto him, and that he gives them to whom he will. These things were offered by the devil under the condition of worshipping him, then all those things and the glory of them he, the devil would give. Christians must understand as Christ understood, in verse 8 of Luke chapter 4. The accumulation of earthly, materialistic things; over and beyond what is needed “necessary” to live and the glory “praise” of them, is to WORSHIP and SERVE SATAN. This doesn’t sound good to the fleshly ear, because man loves to look good, dress good, ride good and live good. Man loves the glory “praise” of all these things and then says “I’m Blessed”. Yes, but by whom? Dear reader, the apostles are consistent with The Lord Jesus in their teachings, being guided by the Holy Ghost; whereby when we read we will understand their knowledge in Christ (Eph.3:1-7; Col.4:15-18; 1Thes.5:27-28; 2Pet.1:15-21; 3:1-2; Jude1:16-18). The Lord and Savour Jesus Christ said in John chapter 12 verses 25-26, “He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal. If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.” This is simply stated, do we believe the Lord? Do we love the Lord or do we love ourselves and our wants? Is our god our BELLY? “Phil 3:16 Nevertheless, whereto we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us mind the same thing. 17 Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample. 18 (For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: 19 Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.) 20 For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:” We cannot have it our way, if we belong to Christ “Christians”. We must do it His way because, we are not our own, we have
been bought with a price (1Cor.6:19-20; 7:22-23). Christians must deny themselves, take up their cross daily and follow him (Luke 9: 22-26). The blueprint of The One Body, The One Church that Christ is building (Matt.16:13-18; Acts2:41-47), is found in The Apostles’ Doctrine, which is in New Testament Scriptures. This is the Church of and by Christ (Rom.16:16-18; Eph.3:17-21; 4:1-6). We shared with you in January a commandment of the Apostle John, as he was guided by The Holy Spirit, “Love OT the world, EITHER the things that are in the world…” (I John 2:15). Then in February we scripturally examined “why” John gave this commandment. “I Jn 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. 17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.” Now, let us scripturally examine a commandment given to the church that Christ is building “…MI D OT HIGH THI GS…” (Rom.12:16). It was given by the Apostle Paul, as he was guided by the Holy Ghost. Let us read in the word of the Apostles’, of The LORD and SAVIOUR JESUS CHRIST (John 17:16-23), as it authenticates and defines those that belong to Christ. He that hath an ear let him hear, and then strive to do, if we are to be one in Christ Jesus. Rom 12:16 Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.(KJV) Rom 12:16 ... Be of the of the same (KJV) Jer 32:39 And I will give them one heart, and one way, that they may fear me for ever, for the good of them, and of their children after them: (KJV) Acts 4:32 And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common. (KJV)
Rom 15:5 Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus: 6 That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Cor 1:10 Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.
(KJV)
Phil 1:27 Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel; (KJV) Phil 2:2 Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. 3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. (KJV) Phil 3:16 Nevertheless, whereto we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us mind the same thing. (KJV) Phil 4:2 I beseech Euodias, and beseech Syntyche, that they be of the same mind in the Lord. 1 Pet 3:8 Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous: (KJV) Rom 12:16 ... mind one toward another. (KJV) Ps 131:1 LORD, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty: neither do I exercise myself in great matters, or in things too high for me. (KJV) Jer 45:5 And seekest thou great things for thyself? seek them not: for, behold, I will bring evil upon all flesh, saith the LORD: but thy life will I give unto thee for a prey in all places whither thou goest. (KJV) Matt 18:1 At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven? 2 And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them, 3 And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. 4 Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. (KJV) Matt 20:25 But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them. 26 But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; 27 And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant: 28 Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. (KJV) Luke 4:5 And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment
of time. 6 And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it. 7 If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine. 8 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. (KJV)
Luke 22:24 And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest. 25 And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors. 26 But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve. 27 For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth. 1 Pet 5:3 Neither as being lords over God’s heritage, but being ensamples to the flock. (KJV)

Is it so, that there is not a wise man among you? no, not one that shall be able to judge between his brethren? 6 But brother goeth to law with brother, and that before the unbelievers. 7 Now therefore there is utterly a fault among you, because ye go to law one with another. ATHLETES OF THE WEEK KELYN AND KAMRON WASHOM - FLAG COBRAS It seems like only yesterday when we were writing about the Harrison Twins at Fort Bend Travis as the won the state’s class 5A basketball title. When the Studewood Cobras flag team is 4-0 and have a set of twins who are making a name for themselves. Quarterback Kelyn Washom and twin brother
Kamron Washom are doing their thing as 1graders and believe me you are going to hear from them in the future. Fact is they are two of the reasons the Cobras flag team is 4-0. KEILAN GUNGER-COBRAS By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View The freshmen studewood Cobras won for the 3rd time in 4 games with a 13-0 victory over the Rosewood Tigers. Longtime coach Walter Penrice and his coaching staff got the job done as leaders Keilan Gunger and Kameron Waller led the way with two way lineman Cameron Daughtry taking care of business. They also got help from
Noal Sowell who caught the two point conversion from Gunger to give the Cobras a commanding 13 point lead. Sowell also nearly missed to interceptions while playing defensive back for the Cobras freshman squad. The freshman Cobras numbers are up again this year and coach Penrice has a well rounded staff to assist him. Kelyn likes computer classes while Kamron likes art classes best. Houston Texan running back Arian Foster is their favorite along with Andre Johnson. It’s been a while since we seen 6 year old freshman who could pass the football. Probably going back to little P J Hardwick back in 2000 as the lead the freshman Cobras to the Super Bowl title and passed for a touchdown doing so. It was great to see the football in the air on this level and the league now gives two points for a pass play completion on a conversation. All this is good for scoring and good for the game of football as a whole. Back to Keilan a 3rd grader who likes Math in the classroom says the team is looking good. He not only expects to win the Super Bowl this year but hopes to come back and do it again next year also. A smooth QB that spreads the ball around very well helping his teammates get down field. He mixed his runs and passes well and kept the defense of the Tigers off balance the entire game. “Well I didn’t get but two touchdowns this week but the last game I had three so we doing pretty good”.
