02 COLLECTIVE EDGE

In today’s world, the industrialization of modern societies and urbanization have had a huge impact on reducing the means of communication between people. Architecture might creates various unnecessary stresses on people that affect the environment, social interaction and well-being. People living in these cities, who have a lack of communication, have serious psychological and mental problems. Today, there are serious demands on more specific areas that fulfill people’s socio-cultural relations. The most important tool of social relationship is space. In this respect, space can be of any scale, from the largest-macro to a certain unit-micro, but regardless of scale, space must create social relations. Macro scale can be in urban context, as long as micro scale can be small neighbourhood or building scale. This is possible through the communication of spaces with their surroundings, the comfort, well-being, atmosphere created by the space, the ease of access to the space, and the homogeneous time spent by all kinds of people. At this point, architects have a great responsibility and big role to create this. Biophilia, Image Of The City and New Urbanism theories; provides architects and designers of the built environment with tools that can be used to create architectural environments that enhance social interaction and the well-being of building occupants. Consequently, it is necessary to create more socially interactive spaces for people who are often trying to overcome the dearth of human communication and interaction.

American architect, planner Denise Scott Brown, ones in her speech, said “Architecture can’t force people to connect; it can only plan the crossing points, remove barriers, and make the meeting places useful and attractive.” While architect cannot control the outcome, architecture has the potential to set the stage for chance encounters and social interactions, thereby nurturing community building and influencing the fabric of our social culture. Those Spaces can be design for different strategies, different group of people. Interaction can be made with alot of different way. It can be more intimate, confort, or more freely. Also the communication can be affected by a lot of element of the building. Such as openings, height, furniture, lighting, circulation, view, orientation, level activities. While I am researching this theme in the portfolio, exploring all these aspects in order to understand and compare three project with social interaction and connection levels.

First project in this thematic portfolio is called “shifting the border” that is designed in interior design studio. The studio was asking to design temporary site specific house and mobile transportable exhibition unit. The residential unit designed for specific artist who is inspired from local people, culture, societies while he is working and thinking. Thats why one of starter idea that we apply is locating a house that is along with a border of the courtyard, with one single opening to the street. That opening provide artist to observe the local community, people and existing city while he is relaxing and meditating in the unit that is in front of that opening. That opening become very important because it is the element to communicate with outside. We can say only element to learn something about local culture while he is resting. The shape of the house as horizontal allow composition to connect horizontal corridors with living units such as bedroom, living room, kitchen, bathroom, and guest room. At the end of the corridor we also provide another door to open the secret garden. Secret garden designed and separated from main courtyard by panels which are same material that we used all over the house. With all this composition artist can invite 1 guest to stay together in the house. At the same time he can make intercultural meeting in the garden with local people. Garden has seating and full of wild vegetation that make natural atmosphere to spend quality time. In the interior space we used minimalistic white furniture in order to create commodious and illuminated. The opening that we opened in the border also can be used after the temporary housing disassembling for the office workers during their break time.

We also designed service unit that is promoting villa panza with specific activity. We created 6 floor panel that is attaching each other, and one side there is panel wall that allow people to do couple of activity during exhibition. Other side of the unit can be locate near building, green wall, or something else. Because of unit is mobile we aimed to get different experience in each place. The activity of the unit for becoming curator for who knowing nothing about villa panza or being curator. First part of the wall you start collecting cards that illustrate villa panza art objects according to your taste. And with next wall you start pinning and rotating panels to share your combination with other people who passing near by unit. And in the final part you learn about villa panza by scanning qr code that is on the wall. These activity teach you how to be curator with interactive way, at the same time provide basic ground for social interaction

Second project called Collective edge that is housing complex with market project located eastern part of Milan near Lambro river in Lambrate. Lambrate is an old-industrial and diverse neighbourhood. The project focused to highlight the rare natural environment compared to Milan and to collect residents and visitors in the same place. thats why social interaction was highly potential. The one of the starter idea was dividing the area into two in order to create residentials for student/families and civic center for visitors and local people. We wanted to position the masses as horizontal and covering all the plot since the area take place in the corner in order to use huge fat surface in the middle. With this horizontal and align composition, the blocks get strong communication. it is aimed to provide easy access from the outside as well as the view of the courtyard with the openings between the blocks. We provide different type of outdoor(hobby gardening, sport courts, playgrounds etc...) and indoor activity(community center, market, barber, dryer, offices, exhibitions galleries etc...) to increase the usability for homogeneous group of people.

In between old residential and new residential part we provide horizontal masses in order to collect local people with high social interaction. The access to the space provide from each side of the building. The space has community, kitchen, study space, dance studio, music rooms, to live together, sharing their skills and time. We also provide triangular transparent room with oriented by the sun in order to get more light during this social interaction.

Another horizontal element the entry level of the student housing blocks. Throughout a student’s educational journey, the foundation of skills for adulthood is established in both knowledge and social skills. Friendships are formed that will be permanent at the end of their lives, and architecture can play a important role in creating opportunities for students to interact with their peers. The entry level consist of big terrace and couple of seatings. This level which is common floor plan for all the students connect all the doors to enter/ exit student houses. Also terrace level indoor space contain(kitchen, dining, living space) only common space in each house. Also most of the rooms has common balcony that still interaction is possible.

Third project is in macro level urban scale project to determine a new museum route and create three new projects for museum, educational and research function. The path become a journey of the ideal museum vkhutemas experience included iconic buildings and new ones. Thats why the ground floor connection was very important for the horizontal connection. Each stop designed as interaction space for visitors and researchers. During the design process of the new project we take referans a lot from alvaro siza, steven hall, and lina bo bardi which they mostly specialize about public common spaces which have high social interaction. As we used the reference of Alvaro siza’s Porto architecture school, we aimed to create each project like a small village. each blocks connected with ramps, corridors or slopes like a street of the village. that idea also help projects to connect strongly.

Finally, architects play a major role in the structure of society and the quality of human interactions which can be accepted as a basic needs. In this context, spaces should host people from all over the world without exclusion, and enable them to spend time interactively. The fact that the field is created on a micro or macro interaction or even temporarily does not change anything. Space should always be able to provide this human interaction.
