Known as the thylacine, the last remaining Tasmanian tiger has been found in the cupboard of a museum, after 85 years of disappearance.
The rediscovered thylacine died in captivity at Hobart Zoo in 1936, with its body being given to a local museum. Consequently, the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery lost track of the remains, as they were believed to have been thrown away. Research has now discovered that they were preserved at the museum, but not catalogued. After being taken on a tour around Australia as a travelling exhibit, the female specimen was put in a cupboard in the education department of the museum.
The remains were found after a researcher, and one of the museum’s curators, found an unpublished taxidermist review, prompting a revision of the museum’s collection. Robert Paddle, the author of a book on thylacine, says that “for years, many museum curators and researchers searched for its remains without success, as no thylacine material dating from 1936 had been recorded.
United Nations stops Myanmar military from taking the country’s seat.
A top UN committee has deferred Myanmar’s military from taking the country’s seat at the UN, after they take power in the form of a coup in 2021.
According to diplomats and Myanmar rights groups, the body’s General Assembly credentials committee deferred action on the military’s request to take over the seat. The Myanmar Accountability Project (MAP) announced in a statement that it has also learnt from diplomats that the committee had also rejected the generals’ bid for representation.
Director of MAP, Chris Guinness, comments that the action was an “important move which has great diplomatic and symbolic significance, at a time when the illegal coup leaders are attempting to gain international recognition.”
Police have cracked down on alcohol consumption in Japan’s capital over Christmas. This follows multiple travel accidents and people falling asleep in the street.
By the end of November, 10 people had been killed in numerous accidents, representing 22% of all pedestrian deaths in Tokyo. Tokyo Police took to Twitter to state that the figure is “double what it was last year. Pedestrians, drink in moderation!”
There are greater concerns that such trends may increase as we get closer towards the festive period, particularly as the nightlife increases after the easing of Covid restrictions, which occurred in some areas in March this year. The police department has released a public service announcement video, cautioning people of the impacts of excessive drinking and reminders about road safety.

Morocco defies the odds, going from success to success in the World Cup, all the way to the semifinals.
Morocco has created a brilliant track record in this year’s World Cup, knocking out titans of the game, such as Spain and Portugal. In fact, this tournament has seen many unexpected wins from the team that were once thought to be the underdogs of football. Sports journalist, Oluwashina Okeleji commented: “For decades, African teams have been criticised for not being good or disciplined enough, but this tournament shows that Africa has truly arrived.”
Although being knocked out in the semifinals against France, such victories have led to great amounts of patriotism back in Morocco, as the tournament has given many from the southern region a sense of renewed energy. Okeleji further added that the tournament has “given life to the overlooked and disrespected underdogs, and fans love this feel-good story.”
Nigeria completed $1.5 billion deep-sea port project.
In order to solve supply and demand issues across Lagos’s trade terminals, the state has implemented its most ambitious infrastructure project, the Lekki Deep Sea Port.
The West African port was recently completed for $1.5 billion, located east of Lagos city. In order to meet the projected demand for container space, the port is forecasted to handle the equivalent of 2.7 million 20-foot-long container units a year. The port site is a 1.2km quay, becoming the largest port in Nigeria, and significantly expanding the country’s ability to handle exports and imports. The Lekki port is expected to create approximately 170,000 jobs and generate $360 billion over the next 45 years.
The port is well-timed when looking at Nigeria’s economic blueprint. The African Development Bank Group has stated that the country’s economy is expected to grow at a decelerated rate of 3.2% in 2022-2024. Meanwhile, the oil sector has suffered from low production and its inflation is close to 17%.
New alliance emerges between Africa and US at leadership summit.
At the US-Africa leaders’ summit, Biden announced new investments and trade deals in Africa, focusing mainly on sustainable energy and infrastructure.
This marks a new era between the two countries, as Biden emphasised a need for a balanced partnership. During the summit, Biden stated that the talks are about “building connections”, as well as a “shared future” for the US and Africa.
Biden stressed an equal partnership between the two nations, further adding that “we’ve known for a long time that Africa’s success and prosperity is essential to ensuring a better future for all of us.”
Delegates from the 49 African countries, and the African Union, travelled to Washington to take part in the three-day summit. This follows the first gathering that took place with President Barack Obama eight years ago.

A survey has found that majority of Republican voters would prefer Florida’s governor, Ron DeSantis, over Donald Trump as the Republican presidential nominee.
The poll found there was a 56%-33% margin between Desantis and the former president, who formally launched his new campaign last month. Interestingly, The Suffolk University/ USA poll indicated that President Joe Biden had higher approval than Trump.
David Paleologos, director of the Suffolk University Political Research Center, said, “Republicans and conservative independents increasingly want Trumpism without Trump.” Another revelation was indicated, as according to the nationwide survey, DeSantis also has a lead over President Biden, by 47%-43% among all voters in the recent hypothetical election. The survey of 1000 registered voters also found that over 60% of voters would prefer that neither Trump nor Biden take part in the 2024 presidential race.
Breakthrough in the creation of nuclear fusion.
Physicists have announced a major breakthrough in the race to create nuclear fusion, after decades of work.
Such a discovery stands as a breakthrough, as it is expected to deliver a source of near-limitless clean energy. The announcement comes after researchers overcame a huge barrier, producing more energy from a fusion experiment than is put in. However, experts have noted that there is a long time to wait before nuclear fusion can power homes or be used in other areas of everyday life.
The discovery occurred at the National Ignition Facility at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) in California. The director of LLNL, Dr Kim Budil, comments: “This is a historic achievement … over the past 60 years thousands of people have contributed to this endeavour and it took real vision to get us here.”
Nuclear fusion is the powerful energy production that powers the Sun and other stars. Energy is conducted by taking pairs of light atoms and forcing them together – such a ‘fusion’ releases a lot of energy.

The turning point in relations means the two countries are aligned over a range of policies, from security to oil, but will not interfere in domestic matters.
At the Chinese-Arab summit held in Saudi Arabia, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Chinese President Xi Jinping met to decide on aligned policies, whilst agreeing to not interfere in each country’s internal affairs. The agreement follows the Chinese President’s visit to Saudi Arabia, after decaying ties between the US and both countries, regarding oil production and other issues.
The 4000-word statement released, confirms that both China and Saudi Arabia will “continue to firmly support each other’s core interests, support each other in maintaining their sovereignty and territorial integrity, and exert joint efforts to defend the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of states, rules of international law and basic principles of international relations.”
The first Arab built Moon rover, named SpaceX Falcon 9, has orbited from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.
Known as the Rashid Rover, it was built by Dubai’s Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC), in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It has been named after the late Sheikh Rashid Al Saeed, the former ruler of Dubai. The Rashid is being delivered by the HAKUTO-R lander, which has been created and engineered by Japanese lunar exploration company ispace.
The route for the rover is low energy when compared to other missions. Consequently, it is expected to land on the moon around April 2023. Upon its arrival, the rover will spend one lunar day (equivalent to 14.75 days on Earth) on the surface of the moon, conducting its man operations. The next lunar day, it will conduct operations to check whether the rover will survive the moon’s tough nighttime environment before decommissioning.
Belgian aid worker jailed by Iran for 28 years.
Oliver Vandecasteele, a Belgian aid worker, has been imprisoned for 28 years for unknown charges.
At just 41, Vandecasteele has been arrested after a brief visit to Tehran, reportedly being accused of espionage. His family have been informed and is set to have a meeting with the Belgian prime minister. Although there has been no confirmation from Iran of the news, it arrives a day after Belgium’s constitutional court halted a controversial prisoner exchange treaty.
It has been reported that Iran wants to swap Vandecasteele for a top intelligence official in Europe, Assadollah Assadi. He was charged with a two-decade long jail sentence in Belgium last year for plotting to bomb an exiled Iranian opposition group’s rally.

Migrant boat crisis on the
Channel.
A migrant boat crossing the Channel came into difficulty, causing a small number of deaths.
Out of all the 43 passengers, more than 30 people have been rescued from the water. Consequently, a major search and rescue operation was conducted in the open water between England and France, to try and save many from the freezing water. Three people have been confirmed dead.
The UK home secretary, Suella Braverman, has said her “heartful thoughts” were with those involved. The UK coastguard, the French Navy, and the air ambulance were all deployed as part of the search. A fishing boat in the area and a coastguard helicopter have also been involved.
New weather satellite, Meteosat, is launched.
Heralded as ‘the most important European satellite of 2022’ has lifted off into space, to spark a new era of weather forecasts.
The Meteosat-12 launched from the Kourou spaceport in French Guiana, on an Arkiane rocket. This marks an exciting new era in measuring the weather. Such forecasts will be made by an image created by the spacecraft, as it travels over the European continent, the Middle East and Africa.
Using next generation technologies, it will acquire data which is predicted to greatly advance the ability to track the emergence of violent weather storms. The data acquired can be used to avoid extreme weather conditions. Phil Evans, the director general of Eumetsat, the inter-governmental organisation that manages Europe’s weather satellites, stated the following: “Look at the storm that impacted in Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium last year where over 200 people lost their lives. These events are tragic.”
Netherlands issue apology for 250 years of slavery.
Netherlands government issue an apology addressing how the former Dutch colonies exploited 600,000 people.
Addressing its colonial past, the apology addresses how the former Dutch colonies exploited more than 600,000 people who were detained as slaves. In retaliation, groups from the former colonies have criticised the Dutch government’s impulsive timing in issuing the apology, as the group in question were not consulted about the statement’s release. The group Suriname commented that they would rather the apology come in July 2023, when the 150-year anniversary will occur of the Netherlands abolishing slavery.
According to the Dutch media, the government also hopes to announce a 200-million-euro ($212.8m) fund to promote more awareness about the Netherlands’ part in slavery and a following 27 million euros ($28.7m) to open a slavery museum.

STICKY FLOOR SYNDROME
Written by Lucy Pilgrim
Across the world, the notion of the Glass Ceiling is a widely recognised issue. The syndrome is metaphorically used to represent an invisible barrier that many demographics face across the world when trying to progress in their industry or skillset.
Alternatively, as a lesser-known epidemic, the notion of the Sticky Floor is an equally prominent issue. It describes how, typically women, are trapped in jobs that are far lower down the job scale than their male colleagues. Similar to The Glass Ceiling, it highlights a hierarchical structure in the workplace which encourages biases and stereotypes, and raises questions of human capital.
The term Sticky Floor was coined by Catherine Berheide in 1992, in the report for ‘Centre for Women in Government’. Within her study, Berheide provided statistical evidence to demonstrate how
Diversity & Inclusion
12 | Endeavour Magazine
many individuals were trapped in lower paid jobs with limited movement.
In a subsequent interview she discussed the two issues, stating that “most women should be so lucky to have the glass ceiling as their problem. Many are mired in… the sticky floor.”
On the understanding that many women should be so lucky to experience such discrimination as the Glass Ceiling, signifies an interesting distribution across geographical locations of the difference between jobs and careers. The sticky floor often occurs for individuals who are in what is known as ‘pink collar’ jobs.
This suggests that women in jobs are repeatedly detained in the lower paid positions, which further encourages the widening of the gap of wage
distribution between male and female employees. Furthermore, the notion of the Glass Ceiling points towards career progression, whilst the Sticky Floor is a problem suited to lower rate jobs. Consequently, situations arise in which women and men are placed in highly contrasting positioning in the job scale, despite possessing equal ability, significantly occurring in both situations.
Studies conducted into the geographical distribution of the Glass Ceiling and Sticky Floor, highlight how the latter is a problem that is faced by the majority in Central and Eastern Europe, whilst the glass ceiling is a more westernised issue. This would suggest what and where different initiatives should be placed to combat the distribution. Despite the fact that there is no direct and single solution to the problem, a growing awareness of the employment gap is a step.

MARITIME LAW AND SO MUCH MORE
Hill Dickinson Hong Kong is a leading international legal practice and one of the fastest growing law firms in Hong Kong. In response to market conditions and increased client demand, the team in Hong Kong has doubled in size over the past five years, increased its client base threefold and added a number of new practice areas.
The Hong Kong team works with the firm’s Singapore office to provide a combined legal services offering for APAC clients that also accommodates the needs of both offices’ growing non-marine client portfolios, which span sectors including insolvency and restructuring, banking and finance, regulatory, health and tech, real estate, luxury and leisure, international trade, and construction and engineering.
Insolvency and restructuring
The value of seeking good advice early when your business is in trouble cannot be overstated. Hill Dickinson’s Hong Kong team are experts not only in insolvency and restructuring but in helping clients take steps to mitigate or avoid the failure of their business and protect their assets.
As Damien Laracy, HDHK’s head of office, says: “The sooner you seek good legal advice the better placed you are to manage the situation that lies ahead, whether that involves restructuring or disposal. We are ideally placed to assist clients with either scenario”
Shipping and International trade
The firm assists traders, shipowners, charterers and International Group P&I clubs with trade and transport-related arbitration and litigation. Specifically, the teams handle Admiralty claims arising from collisions, salvage, groundings and pollution; cargo loss and damage claims, misdelivery claims, ship mortgage enforcement and

charterparty disputes, together with insurance and reinsurance matters.
On the non-contentious side, the APAC teams handle sale and purchase (including of superyachts), corporate shipping, shipping finance, ship leasing, ESG and decarbonisation in shipping, escrow arrangements, pooling agreements and joint ventures.
Commercial litigation and arbitration
The Hong Kong team is well versed in handling and winning commercial cases at all levels in the Hong Kong courts and before specialist tribunals and boards. It has also embraced the shift towards arbitration as a practical, quicker and often more cost-effective route towards dispute resolution.
Corporate transactional work
The Hong Kong team handle all aspects of corporate transactional and regulatory work that business owners – from SMEs and startups to large international conglomerates – typically require, including complex cross-border deals. The firm’s Asia-Pacific offices are staffed with highly experienced lawyers qualified in the UK, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, India, Australia, New York and New Zealand.
Hong Kong as a centre for legal and dispute resolution – what does the future hold?
In a speech delivered in Hong Kong on 1 July 2022, President Xi Jinping expressed support, for the first
time, for maintaining ‘the common law’ of Hong Kong. His words have dispelled recent concerns over the preservation and continuance of the common law of Hong Kong and demonstrate the central government’s resolve to further enhance Hong Kong’s legal and dispute resolution services within the Greater Bay Area (GBA). Indeed, Hong Kong has been a popular location for international arbitrations and legal services for years, a role that in recent years has been reinforced and strengthened by the mutual cooperation and access between Hong Kong and other cities in GBA, as well as the rest of Mainland China.
Commenting on what lies ahead for law firms like Hill Dickinson in Hong Kong, Damien Laracy said: “The common law of Hong Kong is the only common law jurisdiction in China, providing a bridge between Mainland China, Hong Kong and the rest of the world. That won’t change. In fact, contrary to earlier fears, the strengthening of reciprocal cooperation with its mainland counterparts means that Hong Kong will continue to flourish both as an international dispute resolution and legal services hub and as a ‘super-connector’ between the world and the GBA and beyond. The future looks good.”
Hill Dickinson’s Hong Kong and Singapore offices are two of the firm’s 10 UK and international offices that in total employ more than 950 people, including 200 partners and legal directors.

TRUSTWORTHY CONSTRUCTION
As a base for many industries, Hong Kong has overcome many recent adversities, namely the anti-lockdown protests and the social and industrial impacts of Covid-19. It would be naive to say that this has not impacted the construction industry in Hong Kong, as it develops alongside the rest of the world. For S&techs, however, as a full-service main contractor based in Hong Kong, they have not let such disturbances have an adverse effect on their operations. Rather, they have proactively utilised this time to focus on their other international operations, by increasing their staff and evolving their markets in neighbouring regions.
At the core of the business, is S&tech’s comprehensive construction management, which has driven them to become one of the most prominent construction companies in the special administrative region of Hong Kong. Their primary services in the APAC region consist of the construction of interior fit-outs, refurbishment and in Mainland China, out-of ground construction projects. Because of their APAC footprint, they remain the only fit-out and refurbishment contractor to be able to service clients throughout the region. This means that they have access to an impressive range of industries. Such sectors include Banking & Finance, Commercial, Hotel & Hospitality, Food & Beverage, Healthcare, Mission Critical, Industrial Manufacturing, and much more.
S&techs’s wide range of design and construction services include construction management at risk (CMAR), main contracting, design and build, and construction management consulting. Each project is completed using extensive knowledge gained by 22 years of experience, which is complimented by

their in-house capabilities that are a key component of their projects. Their committed team, totalling 210 members, are also recognised as key asset to the business. Each team member is dedicated to the goal of seamless project completion. Thus, due to such productive and streamlined operations, they have recently received the accolade of Asia’s Leading Construction Service Provider of the Year at Hong Kong’s Most Outstanding Business (HKMOB) Awards.
With such a repertoire under their belt, S&techs’ influence expands across international borders. The company has broadened their operations in the APAC region, with further markets in Singapore, Tokyo, Taipei, Shenzhen, Suzhou, Shanghai, Wuhan, and Foshan, and they work with key Alliance Partners in many more regions. They are also currently looking to expand their construction management expertise in other areas of Asia Pacific, including the Philippines, Indonesia and Vietnam. Further office potential can be seen in Malaysia, and other South East Asia locations. The key alliances that
S&techs have created are vital to provide service to both local and international clients in locations where they do not have offices. Additional advantages of local and international alliances lie in partnerships with multi-billion-dollar construction companies such as STO Building Group, the New York based Construction Services provider of which S&techs is the APAC Alliance partner. This opens up a network of global influence.
S&techs is in a highly established position as an Asia-leading construction management company, that has great influence across a range of sectors and countries. Therefore, with 22 years of experience in the construction industry, S&techs will professionally build their client’s projects from start to finish. In the future, S&techs are eager to build on their talented workforce and develop their alliances to build on their already flourishing success.

Ethiopian Airlines
chevron-square-right https://www.ethiopianairlines.com
Having featured Ethiopian Airlines in the past, it is nice to see how they are continuing to grow from strength to strength. In 2019, the African airline giant was unfortunately involved in a fatal plane crash, however, as we shall discuss, Ethiopian Airlines has worked hard to restore itself to its former glory. This is achieved by continuing to pursue its glowing Vision 25 plan that it set itself in 2010. Thus, we shall see how they are yet to be defeated, by continually demonstrating their reliability and efficiency as an airline company.
Having been awarded the World’s Best Airline Alliance at the Skytrax 2022 World Airline Awards, Ethiopian Airlines is a highly regarded African Airline company and continues to be the fastest growing in the African Airline sector. The company has been in operation for over 70 years, and in this time has greatly established itself as the
continent’s leading aviation company, completely unrivalled in its efficiency and operational success. The Ethiopian Airlines Group is one of the largest aviation groups in Africa, acting as a SKYTRAXcertified four-star global airline. This means that despite the events of their past, they are slowly but surely becoming internationally recognised for productivity, coherence, and above all else, safety.
The pan-African carrier works in close collaboration with several organisations, offering passenger and cargo services across the globe to more than 127 destinations. Ethiopian Airlines’ collaborations do not only involve other airlines and businesses, as their influence also extends to governments and NGOs. Such connections are a clear testament to the high regard that the airline is held in. It is also telling of how far the airline has come since the accident, acting as the flag carrier of Ethiopia. So much so, that it has been voted the best airline in Africa for three years in a row.

Ethiopian Airlines operates at the forefront of technology, and it is for this reason that the Airline has become one of Ethiopia’s major industries and a veritable institution in Africa. This is reflected in its commanding of a lion’s share of the pan-African network including the daily and double daily east to west flight across the continent. Regarding its vast fleet, it is by far the best that Africa has to offer, boasting an aircraft network that is “ultra-modern and environmentally friendly”. This includes the Airbus A350, Boeing 787-8, Boeing 787-9, Boeing 777300ER, Boeing 777-200LR, Boeing 777-200 Freighter, and the Bombardier Q-400 double fleet. This incredibly modern fleet is kept fresh and revitalised, with the average age of the aircraft coming in at five years. Not only is the fleet young, but it was also the first of its kind, as Ethiopian was the first airline in Africa to operate any of these aircrafts.
Despite its already resounding success, Ethiopian airlines continue to grow. Over the past ten years, the airline has averaged a growth of 25% a year. It is therefore fitting that they have a clear vision for their future. The key focus of their mission is safety, and is at top of their priorities, alongside reliability and a market-driven customer focus. To obtain this, Ethiopian Airlines continuously seek to improve its operations and strive for innovation and knowledge sharing. This is further aided by its wellestablished assets and capabilities that are kept in
place to repeatedly deliver optimum performance, which can be showcased by its expanding list of destinations that they operate to.
Ethiopian airlines as a group are working towards its Vision 2025 plan, a 15-year strategy that began in 2010. The forethought of the company is emphasised by the plan, as they seek to promote Ethiopian Airlines as the African leader in not only the airline sector but also within all six of its business centres: Ethiopian International Services; Ethiopian Cargo and Logistics Services; Ethiopian MRO Services; Ethiopian Aviation Academy; Ethiopian ADD Hub Ground Services and Ethiopian Airports Services. Many of these sectors are already enjoying continent-wide success.
For example, Ethiopian Cargo & Logistics Services is Africa’s latest cargo operator that has been awarded ‘African Cargo Airline of the Year’ and ‘Air Cargo Brand of the Year in Africa’, an award that it has continuously achieved over the last decade. Most recently, they also won the ‘Air Cargo Industry Customer Care Award 2022’, demonstrating their unrelenting successes.
Perhaps it can be said that such awards are earnt by the organisation’s biggest asset, the staff.

Its Human Resources Development Plan is one of the four major pillars of Vision 2025. Currently, the workplace comprises of over 16,000 employees. Each individual member of staff requires training in order to perform their roles to a standard of expertise. Much of the training takes place at the Ethiopian Aviation Academy.
This Academy has operated since the 1960s and continues to be one of Ethiopia’s key business centres. This is primarily due to the Aviation Group’s key funding, as they have continuously invested in the growth and efficiency of the academy. Its broad size facilitates the processing of over 4,000 trainees a year, covering all of the essential skill areas in aviation.
Over the last ten years, the Group has invested over $100 million in the Academy and continues to witness successful development. The Ethiopian Aviation Group state: “We aim to multiply trained aviation professionals across the African continent. Our state-ofthe-art aviation academy has been built to produce the best African aviators. We invite
all to come, learn and become aviation an expert.”
In addition to training newly qualified members and developing personnel, the Academy also places great importance on training its staff for managerial positions and promotes from within wherever possible. The highly motivated and expertly trained team at Ethiopian Airline does however face many challenges. Operating an aviation group contains a vast range of logistical issues, but on top of this, the industry is coming out of a difficult period as many airlines across Africa are losing key funding. However, Ethiopian Airlines’ efficiency, longstanding partnerships and experienced approach mean that it is rising above the rest and continuing to thrive despite adversity.
With 70 years of experience behind it and a team of “avid and experienced industry experts” running the airline, there is little that could diminish Ethiopian Airlines’ success. They continue to be as dedicated to their high standards as ever and are moving forwards with ambition and confidence earned by seven decades of dedication and perseverance.

THE LINE: A WONDEROUS UTOPIA
As a staggering region in Saudi Arabia, The Line is an unprecedented construction operation. The project began earlier this year, with the ambition to create an entire city on a linear structure. The futuristic city is set to be the epitome of accessibility and leisure, whilst also encompassing ultramodern and economic experimentation in business and technology.
The vision is brought to life by NEOM, a northwestern area in Saudi Arabia. As the region’s brainchild, The Line is part of a mammoth project that hopes to incorporate smart city technology and is the spearhead of the Saudi Vision 2030. This particular plan is an economic and social reform blueprint to accelerate Saudi Arabia’s awareness to the world. Thus, The Line is not only a wonder to be held by the international gaze, domestically, it is reported to generate nearly half a million jobs and

add a staggering $48 billion to Saudi’s GDP. However, such advancements come at no small cost, as the entire project is forecasted to be a $500 billion operation.
The design and functionality of the city is a demonstration of the resources and technology that Saudi Arabia has access to, as it will accommodate nine million people. It is therefore conducive that it “puts humans first”, as its residents “health and well-being will be prioritised over transportation and infrastructure”, making The Line a city for its people more than anything else.
Its linear design is clearly unlike anything ever witnessed in the construction industry, utilising complex methodology and technology to achieve
such a feat. Precise engineering must be used as the entire city is to be only 200 meters wide, but 170 km long, and an impressive 5000 meters above sea level. And yet, you may wonder how such a large city will function? The city is designed in such a way that everything is easily accessible and walkable, “having access to facilities no matter where you are”. The only transportation available is a single high-speed rail, with a transit of just 20 minutes. Surprisingly, the lack of infrastructure in the city is regarded as a unique positive of the region, as it places human needs above infrastructure and industry.
Technology aside, The Line will further contrast many traditional cities, due to its abundance of nature that is a product of its inspired and technical planning. Residents shall find pleasure in the fact that flourishing and green open spaces shall be a two-minute stroll, regardless of where you are, as

they are to be suspended on multiple levels across the city. The natural landscapes will not be limited to parks and nature reserves, but mountains and lakes that are supposedly achievable due to the reduced infrastructure footprint.
Heralded as “the future of urban living”, it is completely zero carbon. Such an unprecedented task will functional entirely on renewable energy, with no cars, roads, or CO2 emissions. The integration of sizeable open spaces will also contribute to the city’s overall clean energy.
In a world where countries are trying to reduce their environmental impacts by single percentages, the work of The Line is certainly something to note. Perhaps the most impressive feature, however, is the maintaining of the perfect climate all year round. The construction of “microclimatic spaces” means that there will be a perfect balance of sunlight, shade, and natural ventilation. Such impressive forecasts means that its design allows for the parks to be sustained, and creates the perfect lifestyle
for the both the blossoming of nature and The Line’s inhabitants.
As previously mentioned, The Line is an integral part of the NEOM area, consisting of four regions that create the future of urban living. Each region acts as a vital component to create an Edenic world. For example, Trojena is labelled as the “mountains of NEOM”, and will be the best place for experiences and leisure, bolstered by its year-round mountain space. Additionally, the aptly named Oxagon is an area of harmonious co-existence between technology, industry and nature, a triad that many businesses contend with across the world.
Overall, we can’t wait to see how transformative The Line will be in the international construction and town planning industry. Not only is it capable of housing the population of London is just five kilometers, it is meticulously designed to create the optimum conditions for urban growth in an environmentally conscious way. Thus, creating a man-made marvel of the world.

ENERGY AND THE ENVIRONMENT TOGETHER
Hydrotechnik Lübeck is a family-run business, that efficiently maintains the harmony between the protection of marine life and the success of the energy industry. Such a feat involves a wide range of solutions that encompass air, water, and oil, to keep the world’s oceans and open waters clean.
These challenges are achieved by combining unrivalled knowledge of hydraulic engineering to create compressed air barriers that ensure the survival of marine life, both locally in Germany, and across international borders. Accordingly, Hydrotechnik Lübeck amalgamates good, solid craftsmanship with fresh and innovative ideas.
Based primarily in Lubeck, Germany, their main environmental practises can be found in underwater noise protection, oil barriers, and diving walls. Each operation can guarantee their client’s the efficient clearing of polluted water quickly and safely. For example, a Compressed Air Oil Barrier is a technical operation that has been utilised by Hydrotechnik Lübeck for over ten years in locks, ports, rivers, canals, and even industrial plants. Quite simply, rising air creates a barrier on the water that stops everything from floating in the designated space. A similar concept is also used in sound mitigation, in which Hydrotechnik Lübeck utilises state-of-theart technology to create the ‘Big Bubble Curtain’. This mechanism is adopted for noise protection during offshore pile driving and offshore munitions detonation. Other environmental protections include diving walls, in which a specialist team of dedicated divers conduct essential underwater work. Each project is in compliance with multiple

safety standards, utilising knowledge and experience even in the dark depths of the water.
When looking at the industry as a whole, underwater noise protection is developing rapidly in Europe, creating a larger global network. Alongside the underwater noise sector, significant developments are also beginning to emerge in the air oil barrier and diving walls industry, as greater awareness of marine life protection emerges. An example of such awareness means that Hydrotechnik Lübeck welcome the exciting challenge of expanding global awareness of underwater noise protection. The recognition of Hydrotechnik Lübeck’s work is fundamental for the survival of underwater species, as the communication between animals underwater is necessary for survival and can be sensitively disrupted by sectors such as shipping and oil and gas exploration. Consequently, there is no doubt that underwater noise protection will become a key operation for years to come, making mechanisms such as the ‘Big Bubble Curtain’ so important.
Hydrotechnik Lübeck prides itself on the company’s family roots, and the stability that this foundation creates across the entire company. Evidently, the company’s CEO Cay Grunau has been with the company for over 45 years, encouraged by a strong sense of commitment and longevity
that stems across the Hydrotechnik Lübeck team. Grunau has a long history in engineering that has transported him to his position today. Grunau, as a civil engineer for the majority of his life, has a strong passion for hydraulic engineering. When speaking to Grunau, he told us about the importance of his passion:
“This professional goal has been clear to me since I was allowed to accompany my father in constructing the Ennepetalsperre in the Sauerland at the age of 12. The nature on our planet is just too beautiful and essential for us. So, it is important that we protect it when it is endangered. There is nothing more excellent than being active on the water, as well as being underwater and making our contribution to the protection of the animal world, nature, and the environment.”
Fundamentally, Hydrotechnik Lübeck’s vital work in hydraulic engineering is a great example of how marine life can co-exist in the oil and energy industry. This is possible by the use of specialised technology and knowledge of the sector that rightfully puts the environment at the heart of its business, creating a greater marine climate one project at a time.

DIAMOND STANDARD MINING NWT & Nunavut Chamber of Mines chevron-square-right https://www.miningnorth.com/ phone-square +1 867 873 5281
Canada is well known for its natural beauty, including mountains, lakes, bears, and even hockey. However, a key sector that is also integral to the country is the mining industry. So much so, that mining has been a vital economic source in the country for nearly a century. The northern regions in particular are populated with an abundance of geometric minerals. Consequently, NWT & Nunavut Chamber of Mines harness this mineral potential, championing the northern mining sector since its founding in 1967.
Ever since its initiation, NWT & Nunavut has been a clear voice for the northern mining sector, which helps to promote the mining industry domestically in the country, as well as Canadian mining more globally. This is even more pertinent when we consider the vast amounts of economic, employment, and community developments that NWT & Nunavut has facilitated. The company also advises governments, regulatory agencies, investors, as well as other large institutions like universities, schools and the media. Evidently, the Chamber is not only a mining company but a key pillar of the northern region. Within the company, their knowledge of the sector is expanded by their significant training programmes, and employment and business opportunities that contribute greatly to the infrastructure of the territory.
As of 2019, there are seven mines operating in the NWT and Nunavut region. These mines primarily garner the mineral potential of diamond mines, gold mines, and iron mines. As a collective, they generate the largest private sector contributors to each territory’s economy. And yet despite the vast operations of the Chamber, the northern region still remains one of the largest untouched mining areas in the world.
For the Chamber, this is viewed as a positive, as it opens the opportunity for the exploration of advanced projects. According to them, an advanced project can be defined as a “project with known deposits that are measured, indicated or inferred, and/or have completed our environmental approvals process.” This means that they are constantly seeking to expand their repertoire and advance the territory’s natural resources.
The history of the company is entangled with the wider chronology of the local area. In the early 1960’s there was increased attention towards government affairs in the Northwest territory. Consequently, the government felt that they should come to a negotiation with the region’s mining sector, helping them represent their views in a more official and influential way. Consequently, a group of passionate individuals applied for a charter that consequently formed the Northwest Territories Chamber of Mines. However, the company went through another change in the period soon after the division of the Northwest Territories, which consequently created the new territory of Nunavut in April 1999.

The organisation’s Board of Directors subsequently changed the name to ‘The NWT & Nunavut Chamber of Mines’ to further emphasise its representation of the mineral industry in both territories.
More recently, between the period 2016 - 2020, the Chamber of Mines was greatly focused on the ‘Chamber Strategic Plan’. This programme guided its work through 6 main pillars:
indigenous. Through just some of the Chamber’s impressive statistics, we can see how they have greatly given back to the communities in which they operate, particularly in the wealth of employment and the improvements in indigenous living.
• Public and Community Engagement
• Government / Landowner Relations
• Development of infrastructure
• Regulatory Matters/ Lands Access
• Membership support
• Sound Governance and Financial Responsibility
In accordance with the plan, the chamber endeavours to be a “strong mineral industry that benefits the Peoples of the North”. This is achieved by a range of commitments to the local community and government that create a meaningful benefit for each territory. This is measured through the socioeconomic effect on each region, based on employment and business spending. Consequently, the Chamber has accumulated some tremendous statistics. Just to name a few, between 1996 and 2019, the mines have been responsible for 40% of the northern territory’s employment and 60% of the southern region.
Furthermore, in between the mentioned time period, they have generated $32.7 billion in business, as well as contributing several hundred million dollars to communities through IBA Payments, scholarships, donations, and community wellness projects. In particular, the NWT Diamond Mines is one of the biggest benefactors, providing significant socio-economic benefits to the NWT community and business, whilst generating substantial revenues for the territorial government. For example, it has generated $6.7 billion in spending with northern indigenous territories.
To this end, the company has totalled 30, 616 person-years of northern employment (48%) from 1996 to 2019, of which 15, 383 person-years are
Alongside its social commitments, the Chamber Mines also has a clear set of practices that promote a greener initiative and protective forms of drilling in specialised areas. Although the aim of the Chamber’s resource exploration process is to complete diamond drilling programs as quickly and cost-effectively as possible, it does so in a way that is efficient and safe, and significantly, protects the environment.
Although there are huge investments and costs involved with diamond drilling, there is little known about the actual technical aspects of the process. This creates a major need for technological innovation and examination of the effects that diamond drilling has on the environment. In order to combat the lack of knowledge, the Chamber created the ‘Alternative Diamond Drilling in Permafrost/Artic
NWT & Nunavut Chamber of Mines 52 | Endeavour Magazine
Conditions’ workshop hosted by the NWT & Nunavut Chamber Mines in Toronto. This encompassed a focus on issues and challenges that arise from drilling for resources in the Arctic. Thus, the workshop brought experts and experienced miners together to discuss the latest innovations around the Arctic conditions, as well as piloting ideas for existing technology.
Another aspect that is a great concern for NWT & Nunavut Chamber is energy conservation, exampled by the fact that their northern mines are leaders in energy conservation. An important element to note is that many of their mines are so remote and thus far off the power grid and must create their own electricity. There are clear steps that have subsequently been taken to improve the efficiency of diesel power generation and the use of alternative energy sources.
All of the active mines now use heat recovery systems to extract what would otherwise be waste heat from diesel engines and diesel exhausts, which are subsequently used to heat minining buildings.
Many of their mines also utilise alternative methods such as large wind generators, winning ‘Best Use of Wind in Mining’ by the Energy and Mines World Congress in 2016. This means that the remote northern mines are able to double the efficiency of their diesel power plants. As a result, the mines have had a great reduction in fuel consumption and overall cost. In further attempts to improve the local community, the Chamber marked the 60th anniversary of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut Mine Rescue Competition. Significantly, it is one of the few mine rescue initiatives that was developed proactively rather than in reaction to a crisis.
As a pillar of strength for the Canadian mining sector, NWT & Nunavut Chambers of Mines has amassed a thriving history of innovation, but also conservation that has worked to greatly progress the mining industry and benefit the communities in which they operate.

Kahramaa
Across the world, the distribution of water and electricity is the beating heart of any nation. This means that the corporations responsible must be highly adaptable in order to meet and exceed the developing infrastructure in each region. Kahramaa, Qatar’s sole general electricity and water supplier, welcomes this challenge, as it perseveres to evolve with the country’s rapidly growing infrastructure and technology. Considering the fact that Qatar is a predominantly man-made nation, Kahramaa is able to provide highquality and sustainable electricity and water that ensures the best services for its customers. Therefore, from the early 2000’s, a key path of progression has carried the company to the astounding forms of infrastructure and services available today, ensuring a steady stream of water and electricity.
Kahramma’s main focus is constant progression, primarily so that it can meet the needs of future generations and keep up with the rapidly changing infrastructure in Qatar. This is achieved by investing in world-class projects that increase the capabilities of existing plans, as well as sparking into action exciting electrical developments that accurately anticipate future needs in the sector. However, such goals are achieved by careful delegation between the company’s decision-makers, stakeholders, and valued customers, therefore respecting each part of the company. The vital achievements made by Kahramma are indicative of the successes that it has had over recent years. For example, the technical performance of the electrical network across 2020 demonstrates an unprecedented level of transmission and distribution of electricity, a measurement that greatly rivals many other countries. Similar achievements are also paralleled within the water sector that has added even greater dimensions to their yearly operations.
In line with the sustained transmission and distribution of electricity, Kahramaa also oversees a large variety of initiatives and projects that highlight the modernisation of the sector. Key projects include managing Solar Independent Power Producers, as well as Facility E, (a gas-fired power project). In regards to the company’s water systems, strategic mega-water reservoirs are currently being commissioned to ensure that a sufficient stream of water is available to the state. Such renovations are appropriate if the company are to maintain their status of exceeding the index of International Standards for Drinking Water according to the World Health Organisation.
Further afield, Kahramaa continuously implements initiatives so that there is greater and easier access to water across the country, particularly in metering and billing services. One of the many examples is the National Program for Conservation and Energy Efficiency, (Tarsheed) in which Kahramaa exceeded its targets of reducing per capita consumption of electricity, achieved only by the efficiency of its network of initiatives.
Furthermore, the Tarsheed initiatives mean that carbon emissions are greatly reduced, consequently resulting in financial savings. Kahramaa’s water initiatives also replicate a

similar story. The conservation of water present in district cooling has made a positive impact and increased the usage of treated wastewater for cooling purposes. To further increase its efficiency, Kahramaa also utilises state-of-art technology, such as reverse osmosis technology, for potable water production.
By looking at Kahramaa’s electricity and water supply technology in greater detail, we can really understand how they are ahead of the game in utility supply. In line with Qatar National Vision (QNV 2030), Kahramaa aims to achieve major expansion to their electricity network. By assessing this network there is a clear indication of growth, as the production totalled 10579 MW by the end of 2020. As a consequence of the great expansion in the electrical transmission network, the number of primary substations increased to 372 by May 2021, witnessing growth from the 139 substations in 2008. Distribution stations have also been on the rise, as there were over 18500 stations in 2020, which marks a 5% increase from 2019. The number of distribution stations is set to increase to over 23400 substations
by the end of 2026, to match the pace of urban development, economic activity, and national events. The latter is particularly important to track, as the connection of the transmission network is vital to important projects in the country, such as Lusail City, the Metro Project, New Port, and the 2022 World Cup. In the future, the transmission network is expected to integrate a new solar production plant in order to comply with the Qatar 2030 vision in two phases of increased electrical megawatt capacity.
Kahramaa’s water network is equally as impressive, with a clear strategy of development and management. As such, the company follows a holistic plan in hopes of reducing any water losses, both real and apparent, which have been in place since 2008. Such plans include improving the water distribution services from intermittent supply to uninterrupted supplies of water. Such effective strategies are further endorsed by a comprehensive water loss reduction program that was also introduced in 2008. This saw the development of district meter areas that implemented effective water balance, as well as leak protection programs

that allowed for continual drop tests. Overall, the transmission water network is reaching a total length of 1,440 km, functioning at high capacity and with great impacts across the nation.
When looking at the history of Qatar’s supply of water and electricity, we can gain an understanding of just how significant Kahramaa has become. Towards the late 1970s and early 1980s, the demand for a reliable and operationalised electricity supply became greater, particularly with the introduction of satellite power stations in Al Sailiyah and Doha Super South. Moreover, in the turn of the 1990s, Water and Electricity became centralised under the Ministry of Electricity and Water, where all related operations were domestic with labour sourced directly. This was a turning point, as it meant that Qatar became more self-reliant on its improving infrastructure. This materialised fully in 1997 when water and electricity operations were brought together under the umbrella of the Ministry of Education and Industry. Consequently, by the end of the 1990s, the legislative and administrative processes were put in place for the formation of Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation, by which Kahramaa became fully established in July
2000. Ever since then, the corporate entity has gone from strength to strength. For example, in 2002 Kahramaa gained ownership of the power stations once owned by Qatar Electricity & Water Company. Furthermore, they have built up their repertoire by signing agreements with electricity and water suppliers to increase volumes and capacities in the long term, as well as beginning pumping water for 24 hours, providing an uninterrupted water supply. It is through Kahramaa’s history that we can see that the company has risen from a growing need for innovation and self-sufficiency, that replicates the rest of the country’s strengths in infrastructure and coordination.
Kahramaa has an astounding track record of enhanced performance, in order to meet the greatly increasing innovation of the Middle Eastern electricity and water supply. This is expertly achieved through vital projects that consistently make the lives of Qataris easier and more efficient. Furthermore, the variety of initiatives available ensures the best state-of-the-art technology is being used effectively, as they are vital in the running of Qatar’s society.
