ummer is perfect for staying active and spending time outdoors with loved ones, but the frantic pace of the season and overload of activities can take a toll on the entire family.

5 Tips for Active Summer Families

With a little care and pampering, you can enjoy summer to the fullest while still keeping your family rejuvenated.

(Family Features)

Eat Well. Food is fuel, and it’s necessary to keep the entire family energized. During warmer weather, cravings often lean toward lighter foods, making it the perfect time to add extra servings of seasonal fruits or vegetables to the family table each night. Also remember to ensure family members are drinking plenty of water as extended time in the sun can lead to dehydration and dry skin if fluids aren’t frequently replenished.

Make Sleep A Priority. Sleep is as important to your body as nutrition and exercise, and making it a priority can be beneficial, especially when your family’s calendar is packed with events. Sufficient, high-quality sleep contributes to a healthy immune system and helps repair damage done throughout the day. It also positively impacts metabolism and overall function while contributing to emotional and mental well-being. Most doctors recommend 6-8 hours per night for adults, and kids of all ages typically require even more, so work on getting into a nightly routine to ensure all members of the family are getting the rest they need. Pamper Yourself at Home. Once you’ve completed chores in the heat or spent time enjoying family activities in the sun, some simple pampering can be done at home to rejuvenate skin. Start with your hands, which are at the center of everything you do and often the first point of contact with an activity, whether it’s cooking, gardening, crafting or aiding friends and family. The unique formula of Softsoap Hand Wash Plus Lotion liquid hand soap is made with a touch of lotion to lock in moisture for clean, soft hands. Available in Shea & Cocoa Butter, Aloe Water & Lime and Orchid & Coconut Milk fragrances, this innovative formula can make your hands irresistibly smooth, so your touch is always a soft touch. Take Time to Exercise. Even a little activity can have a huge impact. The American Heart Association recommends at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity activity at least five days a week. Taking time out of your family’s busy summer schedule to go for a walk, ride bikes around the park or neighborhood, or play a game outside together can contribute to maintaining a healthy weight and feeling more energized. Slow Down. It’s easy to spread yourself too thin, especially in the summer when there are often more activities requiring your attention and attendance. When you get caught up in trying to make the most out of every second of every day, it can take a toll on both your family’s physical and emotional well-being. Slow down and take that welldeserved personal time – even just an hour a day – to do something you enjoy with the ones you love. Remember to take small breaks during activities to stretch or take a short walk to help relieve potential stress on your body. TOP 5 WAYS TO BATTLE BELLY

BLOAT

1. Cleanse

armer weather brings sunny days, fresh breezes and plenty of flora and fauna to explore. But there’s another aspect to warm weather that some people dread: swimsuit season.

Three out of four women (77 percent) have felt self-conscious while wearing a swimsuit due to body issues, according to a recent Renew Life survey, and their midsection is a big reason. Belly bloat is the No. 1 reason they feel self-conscious. Wearing a swimsuit takes guts! Most women (60 percent) typically do something in preparation to look their best for swimsuit season. To battle the bloat and feel your best at the pool, beach and beyond, follow these five simple tips.

(BPT)

First, prime your body with an herbal cleanse from Renew Life. This easy three-day cleanse works with the body’s natural metabolism to help eliminate waste and toxins, and relieves occasional bloating and constipation. You’ll detoxify, reduce water retention and immediately feel more energized.

2. Eat smart Avoid highly processed foods to maintain a tame tummy. These foods are typically high in sodium and low in fiber, which contributes to that bloated feeling. Some vegetables should be avoided as well. Beyond beans, avoid broccoli, Brussels sprouts and cauliflower, which can cause a gassy feeling. 3. Hydrate Staying hydrated is essential on hot days, but don’t reach for carbonated drinks. The bubbles can get trapped in your belly and contribute to bloating. Instead, go for good old H2O. If you need a little flavor, add a few wedges of fresh orange, lemon, lime or grapefruit for a healthy twist that’s sure to quench your thirst. 4. Maintain gut health A properly functioning gut contains a delicate balance of bacteria to help with digestive and immune health. Without this balance, you can feel bloated and unwell. Keep your gut in check with a daily probiotic supplement like Renew Life Ultimate Flora Probiotic. Just one daily pill can help replenish the balance to help you keep bloat under control. 5. Exercise If you’re bloated, you may be more tempted to curl up on the couch rather than get active. However, exercise stimulates the bowels and helps keep your digestive tract regular. Strive to move and groove at least 15 minutes a day. Take a short walk, turn on that workout video and sign up for that yoga class - not only will you kick bloat to the curb, but you’ll look and feel great. Don’t let tummy troubles keep you from doing the things you love. With these five tips you’ll have occasional bloat under control and be ready for swimsuit season.

ARE YOU READY TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

IN YOUR CAREER?

he future success of candidates seeking employment has me concerned. As a recruiter I’ve seen many changes in the job market, from new methods of resume screening that includes the famous “Tracking System” – a scanner which scan resumes based on specific employer criteria – to such a large increase in the volume of applicants for one position that makes it nearly impossible for a recruiter to evaluate, respond and interview, to a large majority of candidates to frustrated and stressed out job seekers who come to realize their career goals may be altered because having the degree or skill set isn’t always enough. As a career and brand coach, I hear and see the frustration of job seekers all the time. People who feel that they have failed to achieve their career goals as well as those who are exploring new career fields that allows them to be happy. It is interesting to analyze all these different angles as the job market keeps changing so fast that we are not considering new possibilities and opportunities that are available for us. If you feel lost, stagnant or frustrated in your career, let me tell you . . . You are NOT alone. There are many people who feel like you. The most important thing is to seek support and start seeing YOU as your own company. Yes, that’s right ... You are a brand! This is one of the most radical changes in the job market today and a concept that it is imperative for every job seeker to realize. Each of you is responsible for becoming and developing your own personal brand that transcends and offers a distinct knowledge, skillset or expertise that is unique to you and meets the needs of the employer that you are looking to work for. Gone are the days that an employer or recruiter sifts through a stack of resumes. Technology allows information to be at their fingertips and what a better way to present your brand than to have it digitally display through a medium like LinkedIn. Having a LinkedIn profile can help you increase your personal brand, career goals, job search and network. Therefore, it is crucial to understand that LinkedIn (used in a professional way) is part of today’s new job search strategies. If you learn how to use it you can maximize your career goals; as a job seeker or as an entrepreneur. I want to recommend The Start-Up of You, an excellent read by Ben Casanova and Reid Hoffman. This book will give you powerful knowledge on the new trends in the job market, tools on how to develop your brand, and also, support you in achieving your career goals. Get more tools my visiting their web page http:// www.thestartupofyou.com Remember: You Are The Best Brand! This is what the new job market is all about. But the main question is…Are you ready to make a difference in your career?

Still on Track to Achieve Your 2017 Resolutions?

W

ith 2017 about halfway over, it’s an ideal time to evaluate your goals and objectives, and take action if necessary to get back on track.

July 1 is “Second Half of the Year Day,” and a good opportunity to do some hard thinking about the aspects of your life that you might want to improve or change. To make the second half of the year count, consider tackling one or more of the following projects. Meet Financial Benchmarks Everyone could use more money. While you may not currently have the option of making more, you do have a choice of how you spend and save what you are earning. Renew your financial goals by clarifying exactly what they are and drawing a road map towards achieving success. You may find more luck if you set one smaller financial goal alongside your larger objectives. So, while you’re paying down debt or saving for retirement, also work on your vacation fund. Make More Music Did you resolve to learn a new skill, such as playing a musical instrument? Many people vow to learn how to play a piano in the new year. Whether you’re brand-new to the instrument or you’ve been playing for years, keep up with your practice by setting a challenging musical goal to fulfill by the end of the year. Beginners can set out to perfect a particular piece. Those with a bit more experience can set a goal of performing publicly or of composing and recording a song. Don’t forget to stay properly motivated with the right gear. The weight and resistance of a grand piano can now be had with a versatile digital piano, such as the Compact Grand Piano CGP-700 from Casio – that features an 88-note scaled hammer action keyboard, and a 5.3” color touchscreen that makes it easy to navigate in the selection of tones, rhythms and split and layer sounds. Go Farther, Faster Many resolve to take up exercise at the beginning of the year, only to let their gym memberships go to waste a short time later. Recommit to your exercise goals by signing up for a specific challenge that will encourage you to train. A simple 5k is a great choice for beginners. For those who want something a bit more advanced that requires more versatile training, consider a triathlon or obstacle race. Be sure to pick a date for the event far enough in advance to give you plenty of time to train. And remember, race day isn’t the end of your journey, but just the beginning. After a sufficient recovery period, you will want to be sure to start working towards your next goal. Don’t let the passage of time leave you complacent about your goals. Keep them within reach by revisiting them all the time. SUMMER 2017 RENEW

early 50 percent of fresh fruits and 20 percent of fresh vegetables in the US are imported, according to FoodSafety.gov. This means that your food traveled long distances to get to your plate. To better enjoy fruits and vegetables, many families are now growing their own at home.

GARDEN-TO-TABLE TIPS FOR GROWING AND COOKING YOUR OWN PRODUCE

Want to know exactly where your food is coming from and have the freshest possible flavors within arm’s reach? Bring “farmto-table” dining into your everyday life by creating your own garden. Follow these tips to grow and harvest fruits, veggies and herbs at peak ripeness to enjoy in simple, healthful meals.

(StatePoint)

Room to Grow When starting a garden, it’s important to have a plan. Find a spacious area with plenty of sunlight to help plants take root and flourish -whether that’s in your backyard or a nearby community garden. For cooler climates, raised garden beds are highly recommended. These allow fruits and vegetables the space needed to expand their roots and hold in water. For hot, arid climates, create an in-ground garden, as it holds in moisture better, requiring less irrigation. Selecting what to grow is your next challenge. Herb gardens are perfect for those with limited experience or limited space. Herbs like basil, cilantro and chives are easy to maintain. Most herbs can withstand changing climates, meaning you can cook with fresh herbs year-round, adding them to nearly any meal to increase depths of flavor and allow you to “play” with your food. Farm with Flavor Having access to a variety of fresh produce lets you expand your menu at home while keeping it healthy. Many items found in simple salads, like carrots, tomatoes, radishes, lettuce and other leafy greens are considered “beginner crops.” Certain berries are also easy to cultivate. If you’ve ever tasted a ripe, just-picked strawberry or a fresh, juicy tomato, you’ll know that it’s worth the effort to grow these items yourself! Mix it Up Having a high-quality blender, like the Vitamix A3500, can make transforming your harvest into vibrant meals easy. Vitamix machines can be used to chop, purée or juice any ingredients that may come from your budding garden. Put new spins on old family recipes. Next time your kids ask for spaghetti and meatballs, try Spaghetti with Roasted Vegetable Sauce. Made with fresh, garden ingredients, including Roma tomatoes, carrots and fresh basil leaves, this robust sauce will become a staple in your weekly meal rotation. You might even want to try it on top of spaghetti squash or zucchini noodles to take advantage of more nutritious, fresh-grown produce. Try something new and create Sweet Potato Soup with Seared Tomatillos using fresh jalapenos, poblanos and tomatillos from your garden. Or dress up a less-than-exciting salad with a brightly flavored Strawberry Vinaigrette, using fresh strawberries and herbs. Growing greens (plus reds, yellows, oranges, purples and blues) gives you peace of mind in knowing exactly where your meals come from, and the pride of nurturing something wholesome. 10 RENEW

he door opened several heartbeats after Hazel knocked. Eddie’s smile greeted her. “Come on in.”

Part 13

She stepped into the warm house. “Thanks for inviting me on such short notice.” “I’ll admit, this case has me intrigued. I haven’t been this excited about something since I retired.” “I heard that,” MaryEllen hollered from the kitchen. Hazel smiled at her friend. “You better watch what you say. MaryEllen’s a good one and you don’t want to get on her bad side. Especially since you’re home full time now.” He returned her grin. “True. But,” he lowered his voice, “as much as I love my wife, there’s nothing quite like detective work.” “I know what you mean.” Hazel sat on the chair closest to the desk housing the computer. She pulled her notebook out of her purse. “So, what have you found out since we spoke last?” She updated him on her conversation with Leon. “So, the grandson, Jaime, has been to the farm at least once that he knows of,” Eddie said when she was done. “Great-grandson. Yes. I’m sure it was him and his friends I saw that day I walked down the road. I’m just as confident they had something in their vehicles they didn’t want this old lady seeing.” Eddie shook his head. “Sure sounds like it.” “The question is, how is all this related? Or is it?” She tapped her pen on her open notebook. “Let’s review. We have an expensive lamp stolen. Peter Manhattan’s house was broken into a couple weeks ago and had his guns stolen. Jaime, who lives hours away and has a drug conviction, has been hanging around more since his buddy moves to the area. Sounds like we have a trifecta.”

She cocked her head. “A tri-whata?” “Trifecta. All three elements of an organized crime ring. Stolen goods, guns, and drugs. If each incident is connected, and it sounds like you’re as convinced as I am that they are, then it makes perfect sense.” “Organized crime. Can’t say we’ve ever seen that in Whiterock before.” “No, but Chase Fount’s connection with Jaime Willis would afford that opportunity. Jaime has access to land he thinks no one is looking over. It’s out of the way of big city cops who might be looking for such a connection. Yet still, we’re close enough to the interstate and just a few hours’ drive from some major cities. A little less convenient, but I’m sure they believe the risk of getting caught is much smaller.” Hazel nodded. “I can see that. And if it weren’t for Nancy calling me about the lamp, no one would’ve taken notice. She still won’t call the police department to report it stolen.” “Good thing we have a case-cracking P.I. called in.” She flipped her notebook closed. “Thanks. Now, speaking of that lamp…” by Tracy Wainwright, Home Manager, Writer, Speaker, Conference Director
