LETTER FROM THE EDITORS What a rollercoaster these past three months have been. With lifting restrictions of gatherings to rolling back those same restrictions, never has it been harder to be a bride or wedding vendor than this year. We feel ya, and we have done tons of research to help you navigate these choppy COVID waters. This issue includes TWO articles on how to keep you and your guests safe and educate yourself on how to avoid being a “superspreader” event. We also have scoured the Tri-State to give you an issue chock-full of outdoor wedding options and inspiration. From a Hot Air Balloon shoot, unconventional outdoor park weddings and even options to Elope at the Old Courthouse in Evansville should you just want to be done with the changing rules and simply say, “I Do.” While we know these are not feasible for everyone, we want to encourage you to think of as many ways to revamp your weddings so you can still celebrate your love in the best possible way!
Cheers!

One of the first times we ever had the name Silvernale Photography come to our attention was a beautiful shot we saw of a little boy standing in a field with hot air balloons floating behind him. It was little wonder that we chose Allie Silvernale to shoot our most epic inspiration shoot to date. This shoot was one that we had long dreamed of but never had been able to bring about. Finally, the stars aligned. After securing our new friends at Bloomington Balloon Rides and the City of Evansville Parks Department’s permission, we brought our vendor team together to create a color saturated, vintage-styled wedding look. We definitely caused a sensation in town as our hot air balloon was launched right by the expressway. Allie captured this shot perfectly with the sunset’s golden light filtering through our hot air balloon. This day was a dream come true.

NIKKI DAVIS
MANAGING EDITOR
Meet The Team BEHIND ENGAGED! JoElle Knight Co-founder and Editor-in-Chief JoElle Knight has been in the event and wedding business for over 15 years. Whether it is coordinating and creating community events for area nonprofits, creating beauty for weddings and many of the styled shoots you see on these pages, or getting giddy over new wedding venues, she always has an eye for quality, design and new trends. Obsessed with décor, DIY projects and home renovations, she loves to overhaul houses and bring personality into her surroundings. When she is not writing, creating or designing, she is with her 3 kids and husband dreaming of new projects, summer yard sales and epic books. You can follow her on Instagram at @sycamorelifestyle
Bobbi Hammonds Web & Graphic Designer Bobbi has been our website guru since ENGAGED debuted, and she now handles the layout of each issue. Bobbi began her graphic career over 10 years ago, specializing in design and hand illustration. Her artistry can also be found in many of our photoshoots showcasing her 5 Pink Peonies LLC, custom stationery. A woman of many talents, she has written a children’s book, magazine articles and assisted many local businesses with their branding and marketing. Her greatest work, though, comes at home as the mother of 5 girls, one of which has special needs. She has become an advocate for local families dealing with children with special needs, and her handicap parking campaign has been featured on multiple local news sources. Bobbi’s idea of fun are home renovation projects, whimsical drawings, being with her family, and going to Disney World, her happiest place on earth. Follow her on Instagram @my_5_girls
Nikki Davis Co-founder and Managing Editor Nikki Davis has been a leader in the local wedding industry for almost 20 years. She began her wedding career as a photographer then moved into producing local wedding shows. In 2007, she founded the Evansville Wedding Networking Group to connect local wedding vendors and create friendships. Her passion for giving back has led her to be a driving force behind many local non-profit agencies and initiatives. Nikki is the organizational mind behind ENGAGED, where she uses her networking and writing skills to provide information and inspiration to local brides and connecting them to the local vendors that can bring their wedding to life. She lives in the Historic Boehne House in Evansville, where she, her husband and 2 kids take care of a menagerie of pets. Check out more about Nikki and her family's many adopted pets on Instagram at @1000milemom Julia Baker Accounts Manager Just call her Mama Bear. Julia is not only our accounts manager, she is also Editor-in-Chief, JoElle Knight’s mother. With a career in sales, education and small business management, she was the perfect fit for representing ENGAGED! For years, she witnessed the passion and hard work put into the creation of the magazine and we couldn’t be happier to have her at the helm of our partner accounts. You will find no one else who champions the ENGAGED! brand more. When she is not building relationships in our local wedding industry, she is loving on her grandchildren, traveling or doing home-reno projects.

REHEARSAL DINNER
Low Country Boil
We are so excited to be the first to share that the Tri-State now has a new catering
experience unlike any other. When our friends, Nancy and Ted Denning, food service veterans and owners of Touch of Home Catering and Uncle Ted’s Food Truck, told us they wanted to start offering Low Country Boils to customers, we jumped at the chance to be the first to host. What is a Low Country Boil? Typically only found in parts of Southern U.S. coastal regions, a boil, or as sometimes called, Shrimp Boil, is a one-pot meal for the masses. Legend has it was originally called Frogmore Stew and was made famous by Richard Gay, a National Guardsman who had to figure out how to cook a meal for over 100 soldiers. It is said he used an old family recipe. The meal was an instant hit! The dish was named Frogmore for the town he was from. Eventually, when the postal service eliminated the name Frogmore, the dish was renamed Low Country Boil. The Low Country Boil includes shrimp, corn, sausage, potatoes and Old Bay spice. It’s perfect for a large crowd… the more people you have, the bigger the pot you’ll need. You can serve this Low Country Boil Recipe with ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY

As an Experience Dinner, Ted and Nancy provide all the food and offer upgrades such as crab legs in addition to shrimp. We decided to get the best, and Ted not only showed our guests how to properly enjoy a boil, but also showed us the best way to crack open our crab legs - no fancy tools needed! He and Nancy poured the spread down the middle of each table in typical Low Country fashion and let guests pick their helpings with individualized tongs. The outdoor setting and stories made for one of the best dinner experiences any of us have ever had! Perfect for rehearsal dinners, engagement parties, and family get-togethers, this experience is one you and your guests will never forget! For more information go to www.touchofhomecatering.com

DESTINATIONS & HONEYMOONS
Hello Honeymooners!
Hello Honeymooners! Wow. Our hearts are
broken for all of the Honeymoon trips we have had to cancel during this pandemic! We know that your Honeymoon is one of the most important trips you will ever plan, and you want it to be perfect. Please know that Haynie Travel is here for you. It is our job to stay advised on all of the current travel restrictions and requirements to your dream destination. More and more destinations are opening as time passes, but if yours is still closed, you have options! Many travelers have been fearful of long international flights with multiple airport layovers. Another option might be to select a destination from an airport that offers non-stop flight service to your destination. Others are afraid of being “stuck in a foreign country and not being able to return home or to be required to quarantine for an indefinite time in destination. The best answer is to select a United States destination for your honeymoon. Hawaii or the US Virgin Islands are perfect romantic getaway destinations for honeymooners and no passports are required.

PAYTON & TRENT In Payton’s words, “Trent and I could be considered the typical ‘high school sweethearts.’ He asked me to be his girlfriend six years ago in 2014. Life is so fun with him and I knew he was the man I would spend the rest of my life with. In 2019, he proposed to me while we were on a family vacation in Gatlinburg. We planned on having our wedding June 2020, locally, with all our friends and family. With the newly found COVID, we had to postpone our wedding to July 25th, 2020 in hopes to have everyone celebrate with us at a further date.” “As the time got closer, we started worrying about having a big wedding during COVID. With less than two weeks until our big day, my matron of honor suggested just having our ceremony at Garden of the Gods in Illinois. We knew this what we needed to do, but I would be lying if I said I was not upset the day we dreamed about and put so much work into was not going to happen like we had planned. We had a small ceremony, immediate family, and bridal party to witness us getting married. Although the day did not go as planned, it could not have worked out better. It was perfect for us, and in the end, we were married which is the most important thing. Being with the people who loved us most that day was such a special feeling. This whole experience taught me to more ‘go with the flow’ because in the end, it turned out better and more beautiful than we had originally planned.” ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY

KENNEDY AND JESSE In Kennedy’s words, “Jesse and I met in high school and have been through many seasons of life together. When he proposed while we were kayaking at Bluegrass Wildlife Area this past February, I was shocked and not ready at all… I had on a sweatshirt and rain boots with chickens on them! Regardless, we were so excited and knew we wanted to get married by the end of the year. Enter COVID-19. We’re not big worriers, so we tried to just go with the flow and see how things would play out, but this meant changing a few plans. We decided to switch venues and go with an outdoor space because we both loved the outdoors and wanted everyone to feel safe. Neither of us had ever been to a wedding in a park, but we knew we could make it work! Other than that, we tried to just make our invites humorous and let everyone know it was a no pressure situation.” “For the wedding, we wanted it to be as ‘us’ as possible. I have never really been one to dream of my wedding since I was little, but I knew a couple of things were a priority- great food and a great time. I run Small City, Big Eats, a local food showcase page, and knew I wanted to highlight local vendors for as many things as possible. We went with a crowd favorite- barbecue and macaroni and cheese, and my mother-in-law and sister-in-law are starting up a cake business, so I knew they’d nail whatever ideas we gave them. I’m pretty crafty, so I knew I wanted to DIY as much as possible to keep costs low and to make sure it was personalized to us. Our wedding was exactly what we wanted with lots of unique touches. Where else can you find reggae music during a ceremony, margaritas, and bonfire with s’mores at night?! We wouldn’t change a thing.” ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY

ABBY & MARK In Abby’s words, “I first met Mark when we went to the same middle school. We then went to the same high school and started to become such good friends, we went to a winter dance together our Senior Year.” “After high school, we both ended up going to USI where we grew even closer. We were often together grabbing food, studying in the library, or watching a movie. We always had easy conversation and were always happy to be together. People often told us that we would make a great couple.” “Instead of doing that, we started dating other people and lost communication for about 3 years. Then during our 5-year high school reunion, we were brought back together. We instantly hit if off again like nothing had changed and this time, we actually started dating! We had dated for 2 years when Mark proposed to me at Lincoln State Park on October 27th, 2018.” “We got married on December 7th, 2019 in a Christmas-themed wedding, reminiscent of a Hallmark movie. We are both huge baseball fans and dedicated a table to our Dodgers/Cardinals rivalry. We also had a table with dog treat favors from our dog Oliver for our guests’ fur babies.” “Now I get to spend my life with my best friend, and every day I love him more!” ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY

HEATHER & CRAIG “Craig and I went to McKendree University together. I was 2 years ahead of him, but we were both in the Athletic Training program. At the time, McKendree was a small school, so everyone knew everyone. Craig and I never dated in college. I graduated in 2009 and moved back to Indiana, and he graduated in 2012 and moved to St. Louis. Fast forward to September of 2016. I attended McKendree Homecoming, and there he was. After homecoming he had asked me on a date. We had a mutual friend encouraging me to take him up on the offer, but I resisted for about 2 weeks. After a couple of weeks I gave in and the rest is history. We lived about an hour apart, and we did long distance for 2 years.” “I knew very early on that Craig was the one for me because I began having anxiety about what would happen if we didn’t work out. No one had ever treated me the way he did, and I knew that I would never be able to find anyone who could compare to him. Luckily, my worries were put to rest when Craig proposed to me at McKendree on June 2, 2019.” “At our wedding we had several McKendree Alumni in our wedding party. We also made sure to get a professional group photograph with everyone who attended that had Graduated from McKendree, and we played the fight song at the reception.” “Craig is a huge lover of everything ‘America,’ and I personally made our cake that we cut at the reception. I made a 3 layer cake that was red white and blue. It was a complete surprise for him! I had also been keeping a secret list of nice things that he had done for me the entire time we have been together. Things like walking me to my car before I left for work in the morning and holding an umbrella for me because it was raining. He would always pack my lunch and dinner whenever I had to work because I work 12 hour shifts and he never wanted me to be hungry. I made little notes with the dates of these things and included the list in a love letter I wrote him on our wedding day. I kept this list going for 3 years, so it was quite long because that’s the type of person he is -always thinking of me before himself.”

LOCAL HISTORY
The Old Courthouse
It is difficult to believe the magnificent Old Courthouse was slated for demolition
after the Vanderburgh County Government moved their offices out in 1968. One of the most beloved buildings and wedding venues in the region, there is not a weekend that goes by without someone saying “I Do” within its historic walls. We are so thankful a small

group of determined citizens set out to save it and formed the Conrad Baker Foundation (later Old Courthouse Preservation Society). Taking control of the Old Courthouse as well as the former Sheriff's Residence and Jail, they held them safe for our city until the organization’s dissolution in 2001. The

Evansville skyline just wouldn’t be the same without its iconic clock tower and beaux-arts architecture. Today, the Old Courthouse Foundation continues to work closely with the Vanderburgh County Commissioners to preserve the building for its owners, the citizens of Vanderburgh County. Within the past year, Vanderburgh County Commissioners Cheryl Musgrave, Ben Shoulders and Jeff Hatfield approved and oversaw the restoration of the white ballroom

to mirror its twin, the previously restored green ballroom. With newly installed chandeliers, paint, restored woodwork and flooring, the room’s historic details shine. Both ballrooms and the Randall T. Shepard Courtroom are available to rent for wedding ceremonies and receptions. Access to a catering prep kitchen comes with the

ballroom rental, and bridal parties can book the Commissioner’s Parlor for getting ceremony ready. For more information, email City Social Events at leslie@citysocialevents.com The Old Courthouse Foundation also offers Elopements packages for couples wanting a simple ceremony in the beautiful Commissioner’s Parlor. Sessions are available to book one Friday of each month and provides an officiant, wedding bouquet and two “I Do” cupcakes. Thanks to the passionate volunteer work of Foundation members both current and past and the care of the Vanderburgh County Commissioners, Evansville retains this landmark of the city and the Southern Indiana region for generations to come.

KATIE AND BEN In Katie’s words, “We met at work in 2014. I was new to the area and didn’t know many people but my co-workers became fast friends - including Ben. Both new to the dating scene in 2016, I thought I was being a good friend by helping Ben step up his game, shop for more stylish clothes, and upgrade his grooming routine to find a lucky lady. Little did I know it was going to be me. I honestly don’t think he ever officially asked me to be his girlfriend, it just went unspoken between us that together is where we both wanted to be. He proposed this past New Year’s Eve at the stroke of midnight. Four years, two pups, and one house later, we got married on August 8, 2020." "I always wanted an intimate, vintageinspired wedding. Everything from my engagement ring to our centerpieces fit the bill. My mom and best friend helped me put together the bouquets and floral centerpieces, which we tucked in vintage amber cocktail glasses. Ben wore a burgundy suit, an ode to the one my dad wore at my parents wedding in the 80s. And my dress had vintage flair with its tea length hemline." "Our ceremony went as planned at the Old Vanderburgh County Courthouse, which was a total dream, with 20 of our closest loved ones. But in July, just one month before our wedding day, we scrapped our plan for an indoor cocktail reception. We needed to move outdoors with space to social distance. The most obvious choice for us was Bosse Field. It checked all the boxes - we’re a sports family, we love summer nights watching the Otters, and hey, it definitely qualifies as vintage. Our guests dined on fried chicken tacos from The Duffy Shuffle that was setup in the outfield, and we cut Ben’s favorite funfetti cake. Our first dance was on home plate, cornhole setup on the third baseline, and a baseball game for guests to watch on the jumbotron. All that was missing was the seventh inning stretch. It was as laid back and casual as a night at the ball field, and we love that we will always be able to go back to catch a game for our anniversary. We never could have guessed that a global pandemic didn’t ruin our wedding day - it made it better.”

ABBY & CRAIG In Abby’s words, “Craig and I met in the summer of 2015 when I was a sophomore in college. He was just returning back to Evansville from working at a large bank in Chicago to help with his family business, Azzip Pizza. Through mutual friends, we met within the first week of his return and started dating another week later. We have been together ever since.” “Even before COVID, we wanted a backyard wedding. Our original guest list was 100, but we knocked it down to 35 so our grandparents could safely attend. Our best friend, Tyler, married us, while I had my brother by my side as my man of honor and Craig had his brother by his side as his best man. A family friend sang and played acoustic guitar when I walked down the aisle.” “Each picnic table had our initials engraved and they were given away after the party to our parents and siblings to take home. Craig and I's table not only had our initials in it, but also a quote to our wedding song "Say that you'll remember, dancing in September" that again, our family friend sang and played acoustic guitar to. We ended the night with a bonfire and dancing.” ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY
