LETTERS FROM THE EDITORS Extraordinary, unprecedented times. That is the only way that

can verbalize what is going on now. Best described as a collective trauma, even if you don't catch COVID-19, you will likely in some way be or know someone affected by it. So, what we bring you in this issue is simply our love, our light, and our sunshine. These are tough times, and we know it. They will be for a while both for our bridal couples and our vendors, but we are here for each and every one of you. When we come out on the other side of this, our hope is that your weddings will meet your every (albeit likely revised) expectation, and we hope that as an industry our friends will survive the hit that this has been to small businesses all around the area, the state, and the country. So please remember to shop local every chance that you get. Each dollar counts as the weeks go on, and our wedding vendors appreciate your business! Thank you also for your continued readership, and we hope that our beautiful pages will brighten your day while you have extra time to pass. Please enjoy with all of our love!

Cheers!

Our most epic shoot to date, Bonfetti was the brainchild of Editor’s JoElle and Nikki who wanted to create an inspiration shoot unlike any before. With a focus on color, fun and unexpected details, they brought in a huge team of vendors to pull off this opposite-of-traditional shoot. Our cover wouldn’t have been complete without a photo of our Best Llama friend, Chronos from Lil' Rexings' Pony Express. He graciously allowed snuggles from our models and sported the best rainbow dye job we’ve ever seen. The shoot took place at the old World War II bunker walls at the 4-H Center, and we used their geometric shapes to be a backdrop to our explosion of fringe, floral and feathers!

Meet The Team BEHIND ENGAGED!

JoElle Knight

Co-founder and Editor-in-Chief JoElle Knight has been in the event and wedding business for over 15 years. Whether it is coordinating and creating community events for area non-profits, creating beauty for weddings and many of the styled shoots you see on these pages, or getting giddy over new wedding venues, she always has an eye for quality, design and new trends. Obsessed with décor, DIY projects and home renovations, she loves to overhaul houses and bring personality into her surroundings. When she is not writing, creating or designing, she is with her 3 kids and husband dreaming of new projects, summer yard sales and epic books. You can follow her on Instagram at @sycamorelifestyle

Bobbi Hammonds

Web & Graphic Designer Bobbi has been our website guru since ENGAGED debuted, and she now handles the layout of each issue. Bobbi began her graphic career over 10 years ago, specializing in design and hand illustration. Her artistry can also be found in many of our photoshoots showcasing her 5 Pink Peonies LLC, custom stationery. A woman of many talents, she has written a children’s book, magazine articles and assisted many local businesses with their branding and marketing. Her greatest work, though, comes at home as the mother of 5 girls, one of which has special needs. She has become an advocate for local families dealing with children with special needs, and her handicap parking campaign has been featured on multiple local news sources. Bobbi’s idea of fun are home renovation projects, whimsical drawings, being with her family, and going to Disney World, her happiest place on earth. Follow her on Instagram @my_5_girls

Nikki Davis

Co-founder and Managing Editor Nikki Davis has been a leader in the local wedding industry for almost 20 years. She began her wedding career as a photographer then moved into producing local wedding shows. In 2007, she founded the Evansville Wedding Networking Group to connect local wedding vendors and create friendships. Her passion for giving back has led her to be a driving force behind many local non-profit agencies and initiatives. Nikki is the organizational mind behind ENGAGED, where she uses her networking and writing skills to provide information and inspiration to local brides and connecting them to the local vendors that can bring their wedding to life. She lives in the Historic Boehne House in Evansville, a local historic site that they have spent years restoring as a homesite and wedding outdoor location. Check out more about Nikki and her family's many adopted pets on Instagram at @1000milemom

Ashley Holley

Editor Assistant Ashley is self-proclaimed crazy cat lady, Halloween Queen and 90's nostalgia junkie. She is also a proud momma to four beautiful boys and has been married to her amazing husband Richard for nearly 10 years. Her love for weddings, began long ago when she was just a little girl dancing atop the shoes of the groom at every wedding she attended. Ashley is a proud Evansville native and is happy to have been able to reestablish her hometown roots after several years of moving around the world as a military spouse. When she is not crafting witty lines for our social media or working on the ENGAGED brand, you can find her outdoors with her family, laughing over drinks with friends, or at home snuggling with her three felines.

On Sunday, January 19, 2020, Engaged! River Valley hosted its first ever Engaged! Bridal Faire. Unlike any other wedding show in the region, it featured style and beauty inspiration around every corner. Hosted at The McCurdy on Evansville's riverfront, the gorgeous historic building that was just recently reopened to the public was the perfect backdrop for the event! DESTINATIONS & HONEYMOONS

Prepare For An Adventure

Monteverde, Costa Rica From landing in San Jose, Costa Rica, you are transferred up to the Monteverde Cloud Forest. Monteverde is a unique balance of conservation and tourism. There is an amazing variety of flora and fauna, plus the largest variety of butterflies and moths in the world. Costa Rica’s cloud forests – where misty fog clings to the treetops – offer a refreshingly cool retreat from the warmer, tropical areas of the country. These highelevation forests contain 420 different kinds of orchids, ferns, and a wide assortment of mosses. The slight changes in elevation have made these areas hotbeds of wildlife diversity. Birding is especially treasured here. Nature enthusiasts travel far to spot the rare Resplendent Quetzal bird hiding amidst the trees. The Quetzal can only be found in the cloud forests of Central America. Another suggestion is a guided night walk in the forest. Over 80% of the forest life becomes active after nightfall. A naturalist guide will lead you through the forest pointing out a variety of wildlife like armadillos, tarantulas, and more. Listen closely to the sounds of the forest! You may hear the nocturnal Hoffman’s Two-toed Sloth rustling in the trees. 44 ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY

SKINCARE

Classic Facial & Skin Care Prior to a facial, resurfacer, peel, or any skincare service, expect to fill in a questionnaire. This questionnaire gives us more information about you, you skin, and your wants. We’ll want to know any allergies and what you use on your skin at home. We need to know these things, but we also want to know them so that we can help with any skin issues or conditions you may be struggling with such as acne. In any of our services, clients can expect to relax and unwind. Most all our services will be in a dimly lit room with warmed spa beds and serene music. We try to foster an environment to “let things go.” In a classic facial, you can first off expect it to be tailored to your needs (acne, fine lines, darks spots, balancing, etc). At some point, we’ll also examine your skin closer under a mag light. This is how our classic facial usually goes, but sometimes we tweak them for each client.

- Pre-Cleanse with a cleansing oil to remove makeup and other debris from the skin

- Cleanse with a facial cleanser tailored to your skin type or need. A facial brush is also used at this point to aid in exfoliation ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY 51

- Exfoliation with an enzyme mask geared towards dissolving and removing excess dead skin cells. Steam will be applied here to help open up the client’s pores.

- Extractions would be done here if needed for clogged pores (whiteheads, blackheads, etc)

- Facial massage is next and is used to promote circulation. Not only does this help with blood flow to this skin but also promotes relaxation.

- Treatment mask is the final step. This mask will be applied to treat your specific skin concerns.
At the end of the facial, your Esthetician will apply some finishing products such as a serum, eye cream, moisturizer and SPF prior to completion of the services.
Facials are optimal every 4-6 weeks for good skin maintenance. Good home skin care is also key. Without good home care it can be hard to maintain your skin health. Skin home care can be discussed further after your facial.
A serum may be more expensive but does more work by having a smaller molecule makeup and able to penetrate the skin further. Moisturize and then protect with an SPF 30+.

How Sweet It Is

TAYLOR & RAY Ray and Taylor’s story is one of 2nd chances. They first met and dated in high school. Taylor says she didn’t like Ray at first but he won her over and she quickly fell hard for him. At the time, Ray said he would never marry or have kids. Taylor, on the other hand wrote “Mrs. Raymond Aquilar II” in her notebook over and over at the age of 15. After high school they both moved to different colleges and went their separate ways. They periodically kept in touch over the years and nearly 10 years later, they reconnected and found themselves to still have a spark for each other. Life looked a little different than in high school with Ray now having a little girl, Bili. Taylor says she passed the most important test and got approved by Bili to share her Daddy. In 2014 they made the decision to move to Minneapolis for Ray’s job. When it came to their wedding, though, they knew they wanted to be back home among family and planned their wedding to take place on Taylor’s mother’s property, Half Moon Farm. It was the happiest of times with a surprise firework display as a gift from Taylor’s mother. Standing there with their arms together was a perfect moment.

Just the Way You Are

KALLI & MIKE Kalli and Mike met over 12 years ago in their high school French Class. It wasn’t until Kalli heard that Mike had a crush on her that she took notice of him and went with a friend to watch his band play. Afterwards, she asked for his number and they started dating. Kalli says they always knew that they would be married so neither of them felt rushed to have a wedding. In 2018, they invited both their families to have dinner with them in French Lick. Before dinner, Mike took Kalli outside and and proposed. She, of course said yes! When planning their big day, they knew they wanted an intimate wedding in a place of character. The Old Town Hall in Huntingburg, Indiana hit all those notes and had a beautiful green and neutral color scheme. Kalli is a wedding photographer and knew exactly the vendor friends she wanted to bring her wedding to life. She says, she gave them a couple ideas of her vision and let them run with it. The result was an organic, chic style with nods to the art deco era. Copper, brass, and greenery galore were used to create a gorgeous palette of neutrals with pops of metal throughout the tables and décor. For their wedding cake display they used the baby grand piano as their “cake table” complete with geometric candle holders and a fun art deco cake topper. It was very important for them to have their ceremony filled with family and close friends. Both Kalli’s mother and Mike’s mother helped Kalli get ready, her Dad and Stepdad both walked her down the aisle, their friends from Mike’s high school band sang and their good friend officiated the ceremony. The day was a culmination of a decade of planning and love, filled with every person and every detail meaningful to them.

I Love You.

CARSON & TYLER Carson and Tyler's love story began in high school. It was a classic tale of best friends turned lovers. When they finally went on their first date, Tyler knew immediately that he wanted to marry Carson. The way they clicked was undeniable and Carson says she never feels more like herself, than when she is with Tyler. Fast forward five years after college graduation and having to spend some time living apart, Carson moved in with Tyler. In just a few short months they were engaged and the wedding planning commenced. Tyler says he didn't realize how little he knew about wedding planning at the start of their engagement. Luckily Carson and her mother knew exactly what they were doing, and over the course of the next 2 1/2 years planned a stunning, spring wedding. The wedding took place in a barn on Star Wars Day, May 4th. The couple made subtle nods to the franchise by incorporating Star Wars characters amongst their lavish vintage decor and floral arrangements. Some of their favorite details included the groomsmen’s Star Wars Lego boutonnieres, Yoda suckers on the tables, and the movie theme music playing during the ceremony. They even had a vintage cotton candy cart which was a fun compliment to their blush pink and white color palette. It was a fun day for a fun couple made perfect by a grand finale of fireworks.

15 years old on a college tour in Atlanta with the local YMCA. Safiya was sitting in the front of the charter bus, listening to music when she looked up to see Malcolm smoothly walking up and sliding into the seat next to her. They spent the trip talking and joking with one another. Since then, they have been inseparable. In 2017, they were at one of the many Bosse High School basketballs games they attended to watch Safiya’s nephew play. Little did she know, at this particular game, Malcolm had a big surprise planned. In the gym full of people, Malcolm asked Safiya to marry him. She, of course, said yes. For their wedding they wanted to make sure and have a special detail in honor of Safiya’s father who had died of cancer a couple years before. In t h e i r c e re m o n y p ro g ra m , t h e y dedicated a poem to him. Another beautiful moment was the choir they had coordinated by Patrick Preston to sing as Safiya walked down the aisle and after they finished their vows. ELLIE & XAVIER While not love at first sight, Ellie and Xavier knew there was something special in the air when they met over 10 years ago at a dinner for a mutual friend’s birthday. They immediately hit it off, messaged each other all night and became incredibly close friends. Years later they reconnected while Ellie was living in Louisville and began visiting each other every weekend. The relationship very quickly became serious and in 2018 Xavier proposed on a carriage ride through Garvin Park during the Christmas Fantasy of Lights. For their wedding, they knew they wanted a personality-infused experience. The Evansville Museum and Planetarium was the perfect choice giving them the option to be married literally under the stars while also enjoying a reception full of art, history and modern architecture. For their décor they wanted something evoking the Planetarium and had mercury glass orbs, wire lights, and their astrology sign Pisces incorporated into their centerpieces and floral decorations. In lieu of bouquets, Ellie’s bridesmaids carried greenery and light-filled lanterns. And their wedding would not have been complete without the addition of framed photos of their beloved pets. The night was made perfect with LIVE music by local favorite Monte Skelton who played the Star Wars theme in a nod to the Ellie and Xavier’s love of the movies and their starry wedding theme.

BRIDAL FASHION

Rogue Bride Fashion Guide

There is definitely a bride who lives to plan every detail of her big day. She has a Pinterest board with 33 cake designs, 14 color schemes, and photos of every flower combination (that may or may not need to be imported) to fit her overall unbendable bridal vision. Her wedding will take her more than a year to plan, requires hiring an expert planner, and will likely cost a pretty penny. Her photos will be flawless and her menu will be exact. Her DJ or band will play songs from a list she compiled (in order), and she will notice if one is skipped. She wants perfection, and she will get it. We also have the relaxed-still-structured bride who will pull in family members and friends to achieve “a mood” with selections that she will know when she sees. She has an overall idea of the type of wedding she wants, but is open to an approach where details come together organically. Her aunt, who thrifts, scores the deal of the century on 40 milk glass vases, and boom! Inspiration is born. She has a color scheme picked out and the maids can wear whichever dress they choose, because her ultimate goal is for everyone to be comfortable and have a great time. She cares about the details, she’s chosen a venue, she has goals and 108 ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY

There is definitely a bride who lives to ideas, but she trusts the process and believes that everything happens as it
should. The complete opposite of our first example, is the bride who will go with the flow. She doesn’t necessarily “need” a bridal party, believes that love is the only color that matters, and would be just as happy with a bouquet of wildflowers picked the morning of her nuptials. This bride would honestly prefer to choose a gorgeous destination, ask her family to contribute sky miles, and whisk her groom away for a solo-ceremony where they will then have an adventure for two. Her ceremony will take place on a cliff

overlooking a body of water, and her reception may involve a taco-truck, craft beer, and a local music venue where the “regulars” become their family for the night. If bride #3’s way of doing things has you envisioning a delicate gown with your toes in the sand around a bon-fire, you might want to listen up. If you’re seeing yourself in a tea-length lace dress on the back of a moped in a bustling European city, pulling cans with a “just married” sign on back, you too are a rogue bride, and the following tips are for you. Although I’m no travel agent, I CAN help you wardrobe for the perfect romantic escape after our friends at Haynie Travel help you book your trip! #1. If you will be traveling with your gown, please share this info with your bridal consultant. Certain fabrics travel very well, and others will be a nightmare unless you are staying at a hotel with a capable steamer or have a dry-cleaner nearby. Fabrics that travel well are: - Jersey - you can literally roll a jersey gown up like a beach towel since these gowns have no poof, they don’t wrinkle, and take up very little space.
 - All over lace - A gown with a lace sheath, typically over a jersey liner will not wrinkle or crease if you use the roll method. Please never “fold” a bridal gown.

ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY 109

- Chiffon -without layers of tulle to fluff her up. Chiffon is very slim and hangs nicely in a garment bag. You can also roll it up, but anticipate a few wrinkles! If your gown comes with a tulle underskirt, you may ask your alterationist to replace that layer with a more travel-friendly material or remove it entirely.
-SoftTulle - with no crinoline is always a nice light choice. She will not be too bulky to take in a garment bag and will also pack nicely when rolled, but will likely need a light steaming if you go the roll-route.
If you are not sure how to pack your gown using the roll method, your bridal consultant should be able to show you the best method (after-all she likely unpacked the gown in a similar fashion when it arrived at the boutique). Gowns are almost always sent inside-out to protect any bling from snagging on lace and to keep the outside of the gown in pristine condition. Please remember NOT to pack any liquids or makeup in the same suitcase as your wedding gown. Most airlines will allow you to carry on a garment bag and will even put it in the Captain’s closet for you! If your gown is tulle or chiffon, this is definitely the most ideal situation. I personally would be hesitant to “check” my wedding gown just on the off-chance that luggage gets lost. A gown without crinoline will fit in a carry-on bag! If a steamer is not available, a closed bathroom during a long hot shower will often do the trick for 110 ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY

subtle wrinkles. Just hang your dress in there (away from the actual water) and steam it up!
#2: Accessorize lightly! If you get married in a tropical setting and DON’T wear a flower crown, I’m personally mad at you. I mean, you do you, girl but a live flower crown is as ideal as they come for a destination wedding because you don’t pack it at all. Have the florist who creates your bouquet make a matching crown or give you extra flowers to put in your hair. I do not recommend tiaras or stationary hair pieces for situations that could potentially get windy. The last thing you need is your groom trying to get a comb out of your tangled hair while you’re trying to get awesome photos. One thing I do love to see blowing in the wind is a beautiful veil! Since they are all made of tulle, you will want to have your bridal consultant pack it in a box for you- not all boutiques use boxes to store veils, so ask yours! If they don’t, purchase one and take it in for them to place your veil inwe have way more confidence in this department than you will in your apartment the night before your plane leaves, I promise. Throw this baby into your steamy bathroom mix the night before for a light-dewrinkling. #3: Choose your shoes wisely! Have you ever tried to walk European cobblestone in heels? I have. If my husband wasn’t already married to me, he might have had second thoughts about wedding the sasquatch bride. A chunky heel or even

better, a wedge will get you through any terrain with a lot more grace than a skinny heel. They won’t sink into the grass and are far more comfortable for long wear. A strappy sandal or even a fashionable pair of converse are even more wearable and will allow you to focus on the experience instead of mere survival. An extra pair of flip flops just in case, never hurt nobody. #4. Don’t swear off all-professional services. You may be a rebel bride, but you don’t need to go totally off-grid. Hire a hair artist, a florist, and most IMPORTANTLY a professional photographer. If you’re a bride that believes in the magic of spontaneity, you definitely want someone there to capture the essence of your escape. Local rogue brides, we would love to see YOUR destination photos! However, business at the hotel dwindled in the late 1960s, and the McCurdy fell into bankruptcy. The hotel closed its doors March 16, 1969. Local businessman Robert E Green bought the hotel and reopened it. By October 1970, however, Green sold the building, and it changed from a hotel into a residential facility and retirement home. ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY
 REAL WEDDING

The Greatest of All

CHELSEA & JOSH It was a Sunday in the middle of California summer when Josh received a text from his friend that read, “ Hey dude! You should come play soccer this Sunday. There is a new girl named Chelsea on our team. You need to meet her for two reasons. 1. She’s WAY better than you and 2. You’re going to marry her.” Talk about a text paving the path to your soulmate! Josh, of course, couldn’t resist seeing and playing soccer with the girl who became his wife. After that first fateful game, Chelsea and Josh spent 6 months of what they call the “friend zone”, playing soccer, going to the beach and falling love. For their wedding, they knew no place would be as perfect as Josh’s family business and new venue, the ballroom at COMFORT by the CrossEyed Cricket in Evansville. Every part of the room was built by family from the brick walls, the cystal beads on the chandeliers to the Chuppah, flown in to be built special for their wedding. Friends and family flew in from all over the world to celebrate the marriage of this much-loved couple. Specialty drinks, donuts in leiu of a cake and and epic hora dance made for memorable moments and fun details. To be in a room literally built and filled with love was the greatest gift to Josh and Chelsea.

REHEARSAL DINNER

A Model of Beauty,

Elegance and Convenience Throughout In Owensboro’s historical downtown district, The Miller House is a casual, family-owned restaurant, serving traditional food with a Southern influence. Enjoy brunch, lunch and dinner in their historic home built in 1905. They take reservations yet walk-ins are welcomed. In a hurry? They have take out and delivery. The Miller House Restaurant offers seasonal menus to ensure the highest quality produce and proudly serves Kentucky Proud products. They also grow their own vegetables in their personal garden for the freshest meal in Owensboro. “It will be a Model of Beauty, Elegance and Convenience Throughout” This quote, as written in the Messenger Inquirer in the summer of 1905, described the plans for the elaborate home of Elmer and Lizzy Miller located at Fifth and Lewis (now JR Miller Bouleveard). In 1905, Elmer Miller obtained a mold by Sears, Roebuck, and Company to make 1,800 artificial stone blocks for his home. He hauled sand for the blocks up the Ohio River during construction. Referred to as the prettiest and most conveniently arranged in the city, this $8,000 home displayed beveled 122 ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY

glass windows, magnificent woods, mantels with tile hearths, and combination of electric and gas light
fixtures. Beside the home, stood a carriage house erected for Elmer’s electric automobile (said to be the first in town). Elmer was a prominent business man during his time. He founded the Miller Coal and Contracting Company in the late 1880’s and expanded to transfer and hauling as well as road building. Elmer Miller laid several miles of roads in Daviess County. He served on the City Council and was a member of the Rotary Club and the Chamber of Commerce. Lizzy Miller was a member of the Women’s Club and a leader in Red Cross

activities during WWI. Both Elmer and Lizzy Miller were very charitable. As active members of First Christian Church, the couple donated left over stones to the church during construction in 1905. Elmer sent many loads of coal to those in distress and otherwise helped those in need. In additional to their many contributions to Owensboro, Elmer and Lizzy Miller built a home which would later be called “A jewel of Old Owensboro”. Elmer Miller passed away in 1922 at the age of fifty-six. Lizzy Miller lived in their home for twenty more years. Neighbors describe her as a generous woman who also made chicken soup and molasses pie for those who were sick in the neighborhood. In the late 1960’s and 1970’s the home was turned into several apartments and housed various owners and tenants. The Kentucky Heritage Commission designated the Elmer Miller House as a Kentucky Landmark under Governor John Y. Brown. Despite ongoing efforts, the house continued to deteriorate. The carriage house was condemned and the future appeared bleak. However, the home was on the brink of a rebirth. Larry and Jeanne Kirk purchased the home in 2006 and began plans for restoring the home, as part of the up and coming downtown area. With construction about to get underway in the Historical District, a tornado struck Owensboro in October of 2007 causing ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY 123

extensive damage to the home. The back portion of the house was demolished, several windows blew out, and the large tree near the front porch uprooted and landed on the second story roof. Again, the future of this historical home was in question. Fortunately, the damage was surmountable and construction resumed following repairs. Restoration continued throughout the next two years. Over a century after Elmer Miller built his extraordinary home, a new era began. In an effort to restore the “Model of Beauty, Elegance and Convenience Throughout the Miller House Restaurant opened for business. REAL DESTINATION WEDDING

Hannah & Cody

HANNAH & CODY Neither Hannah nor Cody were looking for love or a serious relationship when they were tagged in a group photo on Facebook. Both had just gotten out of rough breakups. But, Hannah decided to reach out to the guy in the group photo who had captured attention and message him. That one message turned into an entire night of messaging which prompted Cody to ask Hannah on a date. These two people who thought they did not want a serious relationship quickly changed to seeing one another as the person to spend the rest of their life with. Their love of travel and trips together cemented their love and gave them the realization that the only perfect place for them to have their wedding was at one of their favorite locations in Utah. Forgoing a large wedding at home gave them the budget to be able to provide accommodations for their 20 closest family and friends. One of the most special moments of the day was during the ceremony, when they told their guests to read letters they had individually written to each person there. The tears of love and happiness was so unexpected and meaningful as each guest was so important to them. The scenery and beauty of the Southwest provided a stunning backdrop for their sunrise first look and their ceremony. This, the greatest trip of their lives, became the start to their lives and adventures to come.
