Trøndelag is a gem in the heart of Norway, just waiting to be discovered. I have recently moved to the area and have just been out on my first expedition there. I am still quite euphoric after the event, and would very much like to share my experiences with you. In Trøndelag you can still find wild and unspoilt countryside and can get close to the animals and plants. Take a break from everyday life and go on a pilgrimage or a hike through one of the seven national parks, pick berries and mushrooms where they taste the best, enjoy the fantastic view and the sounds of nature by the campfire. My personal tip for animal lovers: a sea eagle safari with Ole Martin in Flatanger. Culture and history lovers certainly get value for money in our region. At historic settings like Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim or Stiklestad, Viking history is brought to life again. If you are visiting Trøndelag during the summer, you should definitely make sure to attend the Festival of St. Olav (Olavsfestdagene ) – one of the country’s major cultural events, with a wide-ranging programme for young and old. In the mountain town of Røros, which is inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List, the atmosphere is like something out of a fairy-tale. A stroll through the quaint narrow streets may even bring back memories of well-known children’s TV favourites like Pippi Longstocking. The road between sea and mountains in Trøndelag makes for a culinary journey. For a food lover it is quite simply impossible to stay away from all the delicacies and fantastic ingredients that the region has to offer. Scallops from Frøya are served in the best restaurants from Dubai to Tokyo, the dairy produce supplied by RørosMat is exquisite, and venison from Trøndelag has been voted Norway’s best meat product. On the Golden Road (Den Gyldne Omvei), you can stop at pleasant farm shops and cafés where, for instance, you may like to try aquavit ice cream. Should you develop a special liking for any of the products and want more, you can always buy them from the new food hall in Trondheim and take them back home with you. What fascinated me most, though, on my journey through Trøndelag, was the people. They gave me a warm welcome and shared their personal histories with me. It is experiences like that which make a holiday unforgettable. So please let the following pages be an inspiration to you when making your holiday plans. Trøndelag offers a wide range of activities whatever the time of year, and none of them are more than a couple of hours away from Trondheim. I wish you a pleasant and eventful trip! HISTORICAL ADVENTURES IN TRØNDELAG Nidaros Cathedral

includes over 80 buildings of particular interest illustrating Trønder building traditions from village to city, from mountaintop to seashore, in the 1700s and 1800s. Ringve Music Museum includes 2000 musical instruments from all over the world. Munkholmen, the island just outside Trondheim city centre, is a popular place for outings, but has also been a prison, a place of execution and a cloister. The Archbishop's Residence is the oldest church-owned secular building in Scandinavia, and is one of the best preserved facilities of its kind in Europe. Work on Nidaros Cathedral, Norway's national shrine and the biggest mediaeval church in Scandinavia, was begun in the year 1070. It was built on the grave of Olav the Holy and is a popular destination for pilgrims from all over Europe. The beautiful stained-glass window, the sculptures, frontage, interior furnishings and fascinating history, all make Nidaros Cathedral an attraction that everyone should see. You can also climb the 172 steps to the top of the cathedral tower and enjoy the fantastic view of Trondheim from there. and take part in historical activities. Towards the end of July the St. Olav's Day Festival (Olsokdagene) is arranged. The event has grown into a major cultural festival with a programme for young and old. One of the main attractions at the festival is the Pageant of Holy Olav. www.stiklestad.no

The World Heritage site of Røros is a mountain town with a lot of history and many fascinating sights originating from the old mining community. Bergstaden Ziir, best known as Røros Church, was built during the golden age of copper "in honour of God and for the adornment of the town." The church was completed in 1784, and with its 1600 seats, it is one of the biggest in the country. Olavsgruva and Nyberget are the Røros Museum's show mines, and are located in the biggest and most important mining area belonging to the Røros Copper Works. In the close vicinity of the slag heaps we find Sleggveien Street, providing us with insight into the social history of the mining community. In these houses lived the day labourers, travellers and other people who didn't have their own farms. In more recent times, episodes of Pippi Longstocking and other Children’s TV heroes have been filmed in Sleggveien. www.roros.no

The Pilgrim Route from Kongsvold to Trondheim

A walk in the footsteps of the pilgrims can be both a spiritual journey and a wonderful nature experience. With Kongsvold Fjeldstue mountain lodge, just south of Oppdal, as your starting point, you can walk along marked trails all the way to Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim. Lighthouse with overnight accommodation

Christian Thams is one of the most fascinating gentlemen Trøndelag has ever fostered. He was a pioneer of engineering and architecture. We can see this today in the form of venerable Bårdshaug Manor in Orkanger, the Thamshavnbanen - Norway's first electric railway, and the Old Mine at Løkken Works. Spending the night in a lighthouse is quite an exotic experience. In Trøndelag, there are a number of lighthouses that can be rented for overnight stays, either for weekends or for a week's holiday with a difference. Most of the lighthouses along the coast of Trøndelag were set up between 1830 and 1930, to help show the way for all transport and travel along the coast. Gradually, they were automated and eventually closed down, subsequently becoming listed buildings and the object of burgeoning creativity. On the Trøndelag coast several of them are now being used as overnight accommodations. History is imprinted in the walls of these old lighthouses, and the sea view from the top is quite spectacular. www.kystnorge.com

Historic Rørvik

In the north-western part of the county of Nord-Trøndelag we find the borough of Vikna, with the listed fishing village of SørGjæslingan and the administrative centre of Rørvik. In the early 1900s there were 4000 fishermen in the area, and these places were the biggest fishing stations south of Lofoten. The Norveg Museum, the centre of coastal culture and industries, is located in Rørvik and has already become a national treasure. At the museum you will become familiar with how coastal Norway has developed over the past ten thousand years, by way of fascinating historical accounts, vibrant coastal communities and the challenges of tomorrow. The island of Leka on the Namdal coast is Norway's national geological monument, and an el dorado for those who enjoy the outdoor life and historical adventures. Leka is situated northernmost in the county of Nord-Trøndelag, and has been inhabited for over 10,000 years. Large parts of the island consist of serpentinite and olivine which give it its characteristic yellowy-red colour, and which are otherwise only found on the American side of the Atlantic. Over 400 cultural relics have been registered on the island, including cave paintings, Stone Age finds and hill forts. www.leka.kommune.no

Pageant in Trøndelag

Trøndelag is the world champion of historical pageants, several of which tell a story that will make you forget the present. The Mother of all Pageants, the Pageant of Olav the Holy, can be seen during the St. Olav's Day Festival (Olsokdagene) at Stiklestad in late July. Here, you will be drawn into the battle which was decisive to the Christianization of Norway, and the dramatic events that led to the death of Olav Haraldssønn on the site where it actually took place. The musical "Elden", performed in Røros, is all about the Caroleans' march into Norway and General Armfelt's fatal decision to order a Swedish retreat across the Tydalsfjella mountains, where 3,000 soldiers froze to death. The Pilgrim Trail, St. Olaf’s route to Trondheim, is a network of 5,000 kilometres of roads and paths in Scandinavia, of which 2,000 kilometres are in Norway. All of the St. Olaf Routes lead to the burial church of King Olaf the Holy, Nidaros Cathedral – the most important pilgrim goal in Scandinavia since the canonization in 1031 AD. Today, the cathedral is still an important destination for people who choose to follow the Pilgrim Trail. MAKING A PILGRIMAGE Historically, a pilgrimage is a journey made to a holy place in order to pray, give thanks and do penance. Today, however, pilgrimages are made by all kinds of people, irrespective of faith, and their motivation varies considerably. Some do it because they need a break from their hectic everyday lives, others because they seek a personal challenge, both physically and mentally. Some people consider a pilgrimage to be an educational or character-building experience, while others feel a need to reflect upon their own lives. Whatever the motivation, the common denominator appears to be the same as it has always been: A meaningful and 10

personal journey, in close contact with nature, culture and history. THE PILGRIM TRAIL – ST. OLAF’S ROUTE TO TRONDHEIM When going on a pilgrimage, the route is equally as important as the destination. The Pilgrim Trail – St. Olaf’s Route to Trondheim, meanders through rural districts and towns. It crosses mountains and waterfalls and twists and turns along old paths, evoking a sense of history, culture and local traditions. People who live along the route can tell stories about the old buildings, churches and landscapes, while at the same time offering local traditional fare and inspiring overnight accommodations. It is possible to spend the night at a number of unique places along the Pilgrim Trail. One night you may like to stay at a historical spot like the Kongsvold Fjeldstue mountain lodge in the Dovrefjell mountains, another night you may wish to stop over at a farm on the Pilgrim Trail and stay in one of the many converted storehouses which today serve as pilgrim hostels. The common denominator for these places is excellent hosting based on years of experience in welcoming pilgrims.

Meeting other people is perhaps one of the best things a pilgrim will experience on the Pilgrim Trail, and encompasses everything from the caring hosts at pilgrim hostels, to the unique togetherness which occurs when meeting other pilgrims from all over the world. NIDAROS CATHEDRAL – SCANDINAVIA’S PRINCIPAL PILGRIM DESTINATION From being a rudimentary wooden chapel on the site of St. Olaf’s grave, the so-called Nidarosdomen has developed into a majestic cathedral, Norway’s national shrine and coronation church. Located in the heart of Trondheim, Nidaros Cathedral is one of Norway’s most impressive buildings, full of beautiful works of art and stone sculptures with rich ornamentation. Reaching the destination of their pilgrimage, after a rigorous journey, was surely an awe-inspiring experience for the pilgrims of the Middle Ages. And even today, it is still a gripping event.

In close proximity to the cathedral we find Nidaros Pilegrimsgård, a hospitable pilgrim centre where many pilgrims congregate and spend the night after completing their pilgrimage. This is also the place where Olavsbrevet certificates are issued. Both new and experienced pilgrims are given a warm welcome. 11

Visit Namdalen – Fishing, Outdoor Life, Togetherness There are few places in Norway where the distance between the Norwegian coastline and the Swedish forests is as short as it is in Namdalen. We find coastal landscapes and Norwegian highlands here. In short, a miniature Norway. Through the mighty forests and mountains of Namdalen meanders the majestic River Namsen, known as one of the country’s best salmon rivers, but also historically as a major transport route for timber. The idyllic fishing village of Sør-Gjæslingan is a listed holiday paradise. You can wind down here in authentic surroundings, spend the night in a charming fisherman’s cabin, or in the landowner’s mansion itself, and explore life as it was at the time when the Lofoten Fishery was the main source of income for people along the coast of Namdalen. If you drive along the Coastal Route (Kystriksveien), you will pass by

Lierne and Blåfjella/Skjækerfjella offer fantastic nature experiences summer and winter. The rural district is known for major events like the Flyktningerennet ski race, Li-martnan market fair and the open-air theatre production Pe-Torsa. Lierne’s trademark, “A Taste of Lierne”, not only involves a taste of local fare, but also activities, culture and handicrafts with a local profile.

Namsskogan Family Park is the biggest tourist attraction in the region. Here you can observe a variety of beasts of prey like bears, lynx and wolves, climb one of Europe’s tallest climbing towers, fly across the lake on the zip line, drive bumper boats, or watch a theatre performance with the rocking sorceress, Rebella Hex.

Visit a top modern aquaculture facility, and see the salmon leaping in their pens. A quick, safe, and eventful guided boat ride away from the Coastal Museum premises (Kystmuseet) at Sandstad, Hitra. The fishing village of Titran, where the buildings bear witness to former glory. The Titran Catastrophe of 1899 saw 140 fishermen lose their lives in one night due to a hurricane. Hopsjøen was one of the biggest trading centres in Trøndelag in the 1700s and 1800s. The general store was the local meeting place, and when you visit it today, you feel like you are 100 years back in time. The archipelago north of Frøya is known as “gullrekka”, the Golden Chain. All the islands have their own special character and history, but still have in common the same coastal culture, and the sea as their larder.

On safari in Froan, Norway’s biggest marine nature reserve, you are guaranteed to see white-tailed eagles, cormorants and seals, together with many other birds and animals.

Trondheim – Norway’s City of Food “Trondheim – Norway’s City of Food,” has gradually become a concept that more and more people are becoming familiar with. And indeed, by virtue of the recently opened Food Hall, the food festival, the brewery festival, several breweries, and innumerable restaurants serving fare based on ingredients from Trøndelag, Trondheim can rightfully call itself Norway’s City of Food. To many people, a visit to Trøndelag means taking the opportunity of enjoying local and ecological fare. In 2015 alone, over twenty new restaurants and eating places were opened in Norway’s City of Food, Trondheim, several of which focus on different types of local fare. In June 2015 Trondheim Food Hall opened its doors, increasing the availability of local fare considerably. At Ravnkloa, down by the canal, you can buy fresh fish and shellfish every day. The assortment available varies in accordance with the seasons, and in summer you can enjoy fresh prawns out in the open.

Once or twice a month, the Farmers’ Market is arranged in Trondheim city square. Much of the produce available here is ecological, and you can buy anything from baking and herbs, to meat and cheeses. And the best thing about it is that the food has travelled only a short distance prior to its arrival here.

Trondheim’s 30,000 students make their mark on the city by way of arranging a number of festivals and cultural happenings, in addition to being habitual spectators at many of the other cultural events taking place in the city. All year round, festivals of blues, jazz and chamber music are arranged, together with the Pstereo Festival in August, which is one of the country’s biggest, traditional pop and rock festivals. In 2015 the grounds of Sverresborg Trøndelag Folk Museum were used as a venue for major concerts, and there will be several in 2016, too. The impressive cathedral, Nidarosdomen, is often referred to as Norway’s national shrine and, as mentioned earlier, it is a popular destination for pilgrims. The Pilgrim Trail to Trondheim, the St. Olav’s Route, has been awarded status as a European Cultural Route, on a level with the pilgrim trail to Santiago de Compostela, and every year the route is taken by pilgrims from all over the world.

Spending the day in Trondheim, but don’t know what to do? Here are some tips from the staff at the Tourist Information Centre: Nidaros Cathedral: Nidaros Cathedral was built on the burial site of St. Olav, and is the world’s northernmost gothic cathedral. During the summer you have the opportunity of going up into the tower to enjoy the amazing view of the city. Combine your visit here with a visit to the Archbishop’s residence, where you can also see the Crown Jewels on display.

Bakklandet. This is one of the older parts of town. There are several cafés, restaurants and boutiques here. Have coffee at Baklandet Skydsstation, or walk further on to Kristiansten Fort. The unique bicycle lift, “Trampe”, is also found in Bakklandet. Street life in Nordre gate: Nordre gate is the city’s pedestrian precinct and a popular meeting place in the town centre. If you want to go shopping, visit a café or listen to one of the city’s buskers, this is the place. The tourist information centre is also located in Nordre gate.

SUMMER IN STIKLESTAD 25 JUNE - 14 AUGUST 2016 The Mediaeval farm of Stiklastadir offers a wealth of activities for young and old. The children can act as archaeologists and find traces of the past, or dress up as Vikings and fight with swords and shields at the pretend «Play Battle» of Stiklestad. They can also try their hand at archery, axe throwing and a number of other exciting activities. Every day at Stiklastadir there are guided tours of the longhouse and familyfriendly story time sessions. And starting this year, the public are invited to visit the newly built Guest House. For the first time at the Folk Museum you can visit three courtyards from three different periods of time. How about a trip back to 1958 to hear a bit of Elvis on the record player? Orkladal and Gauldal Many people associate the region’s name with the rivers Orkla and Gaula, Europe’s best salmon rivers. Salmon are found in large stretches of the River Orkla, and overnight accommodation in hotels, camp sites and private apartments is available at many locations along the river. Both Orkladalen and Gauldalen are important stages in the final part of the pilgrim route to Trondheim. Orkdalsføret is rich in history, particularly with regard to early Norwegian industrial development. The old mine at Løkken Works, for instance, dates all the way back to 1654. The Thamshavnbanen, Norway’s first narrow gauge electric railway from 1908, still runs on the section from Løkken Works to Bårdshaug in the summer. Local fare is becoming more and more popular, and there is an increasing level of awareness among local manufacturers to this effect. Ingredients that can be harvested in the local countryside are found on the menu at a number of venues, including the Bergmannskroa Inn at Løkken Works and Bårdshaug Stately Home in Orkanger. Nature is the main attraction in Gauldal. The Gaula is one of the world’s best rivers for anglers fishing for Atlantic salmon.

Every year somewhere between 20 and 50 tons of salmon are caught in the river. Gaula Nature Centre is situated in Støren and offers events and activities all year round. Here you can see over 60 different species of wild animals, together with TV screens showing the life cycle of the salmon. And in summer there is also live coverage from the river. At Forelhogna National Park you can cycle or walk through beautiful, unspoilt countryside. Gauldal is also an exciting place to visit during the winter. Ålen Ski Centre offers challenging slopes for young and old, together with miles of excellent ski trails and many impressive lakes wellsuited to ice fishing.

Meldal Village Museum with its 20 historic buildings and abundant collection of exhibits is idyllically situated in Bergslia, just across from Meldal town centre, with a fine view of the village and surrounding mountains.

There is a sports park in Orkanger town centre - a fantastic facility where football can be played all year round. The area also includes an athletics arena. A visit to the climbing hall, one of the most spectacular indoor climbing facilities in the country, is also recommended.

A visit to the Industrial Museum at Løkken Works is recommended. The importance mining has had over the centuries is documented here, and the acts of sabotage carried out against the Thamshavnbanen railway during World War II are described in detail.

TRAVEL TIPS GAULDALEN:

Visits to Horg Bygdatun Folk Museum are very popular. Packages including local fare and demonstrations of local handicrafts are available.

Pay a visit to Knyken – Scandinavia’s best recruitment facility for ski sports. A complete arena for anyone wishing to pursue any sport with skis on their feet – all year round.

Some of the mountain farms in Gauldal are still in operation.

The Thamshavnbanen, Norway’s first narrow gauge electric railway, opened by King Haakon in 1908, runs on the section from Løkken Works to Bårdshaug during the summer. A fascinating experience for young and old.

Large expanses of land have been preserved either as national parks or protected areas, offering visitors some of the finest Norwegian countryside. Maybe you will get lucky and see wild reindeer, musk oxen, wolverine or Arctic foxes in their natural environments. Here, you will find both easy and more demanding mountain walks along marked trails. And if you enjoy cycling, there is a wealth of opportunity. Barnas Naturverden (The Children’s Natural World) make arrangements especially for the children. The Pilgrim Route to Nidaros runs through historical mountains and valleys, and in the Knutshøene mountains you will find the most botanically abundant highland area in northern Europe.

If you enjoy fishing, the innumerable mountain lakes and the salmon rivers of Orkla and Driva offer excellent scope for anglers young and old. There are many accomplished local food manufacturers in Oppdal and Rennebu, supplying everything from delicious cured meats to fresh baking. In the mountain valleys you can still witness traditional mountain farming and buy genuine mountain farm fare. Flourishing handicraft traditions are still maintained, and the Rennebumartnan market fair in August is Norway’s leading sales exhibition for home crafts and handicraft products. Oppdal is the country’s biggest sheep farming community, a fact which is celebrated during the Mountain and Mutton Festival (Fjell- og Fårikålfestivalen) in October.

The 18-hole golf course is situated in beautiful surroundings in Oppdal Leisure Park.

Every summer, thousands of people visit Viewpoint Snøhetta in the Tverfjellet mountains at Hjerkinn. From there, you have a panoramic view of Mount Snøhetta (2286 m asl), the highest point in the Dovrefjell range. Adapted for wheelchair users. The distinctive viewing pavilion has won a number of international architecture awards.

Oppdal Museum and Rennebu Folk Museum provide an account of the local history. Europe’s second biggest Viking Age burial grounds are found at Vang, west of Oppdal town centre. Guided tours are available for groups.

In Oppdal and Rennebu there are many culture, art and handicrafts experts.

Two pleasant bathing spots: Lake Buvatnet, north of Berkåk and Rauøra on Lake Gjevilvatnet. You will also find an indoor water park at Oppdal Culture Centre.

At Grøtte Farm you can become familiar with tame moose in the farmyard. You can also take part in a moose safari and see the animals in the wild. Into the mountains on horseback? Trollheimen and Dovrefjell offer the finest of walks. Here you can wander around on marked trails for days on end. The Triangle (Trekanten) in Trollheimen is one of the most delightful walks in the country.

In the heart of Norway, in Stjørdal, we find Trondheim Airport Værnes where travellers are brought direct from, London, Amsterdam, Berlin, Riga, Gdansk, Copenhagen and Stockholm. We also find the E6 and E14, the train from Sweden, and trains from the south and north of Norway. There are also bus and rail services from here to Meråker, and bus services to Selbu, Tydal and Frosta. One of the country’s most impressive stretches of road, the Fv 705 between Røros/Brekken and Stjørdal, runs through Tydal and Selbu. On this road you might meet reindeer in the mountains, see Trøndelag’s highest waterfall (Henfallet) in Tydal, visit the Norwegian Radio Museum in Selbu, and end up in Hell. Meråker offers horseback riding, Rypetoppen Adventurepark at Teveltunet, dog-sledding and alpine skiing. 61

The Frosta peninsula in the Trondheimsfjord is a true gem. Frosta played a signifi cant role in the Viking Age with its "Frostating" legislative assembly. On the island of Tautra, off the coast of Frosta, we fi nd the ruins of an old monastery from Cistercian times, a pleasant eating place with overnight accommodations and a big new monastery. In this region you can also see rock carvings, fortifi cations, mediaeval churches, many excellent museums and historical performances. ON FOOT IN TRØNDELAG Trøndelag is a popular region for hiking, and rambling trails can be found in the inland regions, in more urban areas and along the coast. Hiking experiences may vary from family friendly day trips along prepared trails, to more extreme adventures like mountaintop walks. In Trøndelag there are no less than nine national parks (see page 64) all of which are well suited to hiking, including Femundsmarka, Sylan and Børgefjell. In most of the parks, hiking takes place on marked trails and may be combined with activities like hunting and fishing. Trekanten (the triangle), in the T rollheimen mountains, is one of Norway’s most popular mountain walks. It leads through the glorious, magnificent countryside between the Gjevilvasshytta, Jøldalshytta and Trollheimshytta cabins.

FISHING IN TRØNDELAG Trøndelag is an excellent region when it comes to deep-sea fishing, fjord fishing, freshwater fishing and salmon fishing. Accessibility and good catches are characteristic of fishing in Trøndelag, and everyone likes a good fisherman's tale or two.

The central part of the Trøndelag coast is called Fosen. The lesser number of isles and skerries here allows you quicker access to the open sea. On the inner coast of the Fosenhalvøya peninsula, lies the Trondheimsfjord, which stretches all the way up to Steinkjer. The entire fjord is abundant in fish, and there are good conditions for fjord fishing from the shore or from boats.

All along the coast of Trøndelag you will find excellent spots for deep-sea fishing and fjord fishing, either from land, by hire boat, or on a guided tour with a local skipper. In the south lie the islands of Hitra and Frøya, an island realm where isles and skerries provide shelter from the weather, providing excellent fishing conditions, while at the same time the distance out to the open sea is short. Salmon Fishing

Ever since and the English salmon lords discovered Trøndelag in the 1800s, eager anglers from all over Europe have made their way here to fish salmon. Rivers like the Namsen, Gaula, Orkla, Verdalselva and Stjørdalselva have a nice ring to them in the ears of practically any salmon enthusiast. Salmon weighing over 7 kilos comprise over half of the total catch, so expect a good challenge when they start to bite.

Freshwater Fishing

If you enjoy fishing in ponds and lakes, then Trøndelag will tempt you with its thousands of fishing lakes. There is plenty to choose from, whether you are seeking a simple fishing trip near the city, or want to relax in peace and quiet in the mountains.

The Namsenvassdraget Watercourse The Namsen is often referred to as the Queen of Salmon Rivers, but among its tributaries there are a number of princesses to choose from. The Sanddøla, Nordelva, Bjøra and Høylandsvassdraget are also excellent salmon rivers. Harling is a common fishing method used on the Namsen, and local guides will row you down the river, while you focus on the fish.

Trout Fishing The River Namsen in the county of Nord-Trøndelag is one of the best rivers in the country when it comes to trout fishing. Furthermore, there are about 800 fishing lakes and 35 rivers there, where you can fish trout and charr of exceptional quality. The River Nea is located in Tydal and is one of Europe’s finest trout rivers. It starts at Sylane in Tydal and runs out into Lake Selbusjøen. Every year big trout weighing 5-6 kilos are caught there, and trout weighing 1-2 kilos are a common catch. Snåsavatnet is the sixth biggest lake in Norway, and the trout fishing is excellent there, too. In Trondheim you can take the tram to Bymarka, where you will find almost 30 fishing lakes. Other rivers along the Namsenfjord There are a number of good salmon rivers along the Namsenfjord. CHILDREN’S TRØNDELAG Children visiting Trøndelag have a lot to look forward to. Several of the adventure centres live by the motto that “it is compulsory to touch things,” directly involving the children in their activities. In Trondheim we find Rockheim – the national museum of popular music, the Museum of Science and the Science Centre (there is one in Steinkjer, too). Here, the kids will find an outlet for all their needs to explore, and will themselves play an active role in creating their own adventures.

A visit to a swimming pool is always a popular event, and there are excellent facilities at Oasen (Namsos), Dampsaga Bad (Steinkjer), Trønderhallen (Levanger), Pirbadet (Trondheim) and at Oppdal Culture Centre. All over Trøndelag you will find show farms where the children can take part in everything from horseback riding and feeding the animals, to jumping in the hay and walking along nature trails.

At Namsskogan Family Park there are many familiar animals and many rare ones, and there are exciting activities enough to fill a long day, at the very least. In July, the magical rock theatre performance about Rebella Hex is on, exciting for young and old. Bears, Tough Guy Tower (tøffingetårnet), excavators and bumper boats are also things that the kids eagerly talk about.

THE TASTE OF TRØNDELAG When it comes to food, Trøndelag is Norway's most prominent region, offering a wide variety of local culinary specialities originating in locations ranging from sea to mountains. There are over 200 local food manufacturers in Trøndelag, and no other region can boast of such a wide range of locally produced food in its grocery stores and restaurants. You will find culinary highlights waiting in line, and they are easy to combine with nature and cultural adventures.

The Farmers' Market and Food Hall, Trondheim (Bondens Marked og Mathall)

Scallops by Seashell AS (Ltd) in Frøya are served in the best restaurants from Dubai to Tokyo, crabs from Hitra are sent to seafood buffets in Paris, RørosMat's dairy produce is unique in quality, and venison from Trøndelag was voted Norway's best meat product.

Several times a year, local food manufacturers congregate in the culinary capital of Trondheim. The Farmers' Market is arranged in Trondheim town square once or twice a month. This is where you buy your local and ecological food direct from the manufacturers. In summer 2015, a food hall was established in Trondheim city centre. The food hall, Mathall Trondheim, offers a wide range of food and drink, and a large part of the assortment comprises produce from Trøndelag.

All over Trøndelag you will find small food companies who make their own specialities, and in recent years about a dozen microbreweries have been established in Trøndelag. Many of their products have found their way to regular shop shelves, while others are still only exclusively available at farm shops or are served at select restaurants throughout the region.

One of the oaken vats of spirits that had not been sold, was opened in order to celebrate the crossing of the Equator (the Line), and there was considerable amazement among the seafarers over the content of their mugs. During the voyage, a transformation had occurred in the oaken vats. Safely back in Trondheim in 1807, the vats were opened once again.

The Golden road (Den Gyldne Omvei)

At Inderøy and in the historic area around the Trondheimsfjord, there are a large number of food companies with their own farm shops offering delicious foods, including cheeses, ice cream, bread and cakes, and meat produce. Along The Golden Road you will also find a number of restaurants and cosy cafés that will be happy to serve you food made from local ingredients.

In effect, Line Aquavit had been invented, and the process of maturation in sherry vats was born. In 1821 the young, recently graduated Jørgen B. Lysholm opened a distillery in Trondheim.

The Røros Region

Mining and urban agriculture have created a very special mountain town, a man-made wonder of unique cultural value, which is also inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List. The many local food manufacturers in the region have made their mark on eating places and shops by way of their wide range of products. RELISH THE BLUE HOUR IN RØROS The blue hour occurs in the twilight, every morning and evening when there is neither complete daylight nor darkness. When the blue light spreads out across the Rørosvidde mountain plain, it brings peace and tranquillity down in the town. There is no doubt that the blue hour conjures up magical experiences. All children know that it is the blue pixies who are the cause of the evocative blue hour, and even though there is also a scientific explanation to the phenomenon, there is widespread consensus that it creates a unique and magical atmosphere. In Røros it is an unforgettable experience. The blue light is reflected in the snow-covered mountain plains, illuminating the mighty Røros Church. The blue hour is the perfect time for a trip in the mountains or forest, and there is great scope for this in Røros.

A sleigh ride on the mountain plain is an invigorating experience, and when there are reindeer pulling the sled it is an extra exotic one. Among Sør-Sami Røros reindeer, you can join in and catch the animals with a lasso, and then have them pull your sled.

Dog sledding is fast-moving and fun. As the blue light unfurls across the mountain plain, it is the perfect time to head off into the wintry countryside on a dog sled. The adventure also includes a stop at a warm cabin, where you can make dinner from local ingredients, based on a local recipe and advice from the chef.

Reindeer sledding

A ride on a horse and sleigh through Røros town centre can be a romantic and idyllic experience. Jingling bells and torch light accompany the views as you glide along the snow-covered streets.

In Røros the open countryside is nearby, whichever way you turn. In winter you can put your skis on right outside your hotel door and be out on the pistes in a matter of minutes. There are wonderful prepared trails taking you up into the mountains or out to cabins where you can buy refreshments.

Explore Røros town centre on a kicksled. Using a kicksled allows you to get further afield much quicker, and will often end up in an informal “first one back to the hotel” contest. Kicksleds are also good to hang your shopping bag on, for those who might succumb to the temptation of shopping in Røros.

WINTER ACTIVITIES Winter activities in Trøndelag are many and varied, and at several places you are also guaranteed plenty of snow. In winter you will find impressive ski slopes at venues like Oppdal, Røros, Meråker, Grong and the Vassfjellet mountains just outside Trondheim. Smaller family slopes are found at places like Røyrvik, Børgefjell and Holtålen. Dog sledding and horse and sleigh rides are the second most popular activities after skiing, and a number of companies offer a variety of scope for such pursuits. If you are looking for more speed and excitement, several companies offer mountaintop hikes and kiting. Among celestial light phenomena

Hessdalen is situated in the borough of Holtålen, between Røros and Singsås. The site is well-known at home and abroad for its observations of unusual light phenomena. Sami-inspired wooden cabins have now been built there, one of which has a glass roof. The cabins are open to the public and have a view of Finsåhøgda and Rogne, where many people have observed these curious light phenomena. In conjunction with the cabins there is also a campsite with benches, an outdoor toilet and a lean-to. 1 The Coast, in the Historical Heart of Norway Hitra/Frøya – Fosen – Namsos – Rørvik

Day 4: Stokkøya – Namsos Across the Fosen Alps, Mother Nature reveals herself in all her splendour, from wooded hillsides and farmland to tall mountains abundant in flora and fauna • In the borough of Roan we recommend a stop with lunch and fishing in the charming port of Bessaker. • Namsos is the capital of Namdalen and is renowned for its musical traditions, particularly Trønder Rock. • Rock City Namsos is both a museum and a resource centre for musicians. • The Norwegian Saw Mill Museum, the County Gallery and the Namdal Museum. 2 HISTORY AND VIKINGS on the shores of the Trondheimsfjord Trondheim – Stiklestad – Frosta – Inderøy – Levanger Day 1: Trondheim Norway’s third biggest city was founded in 997 A.D. by Olaf Tryggvason, and is Norway’s cultural capital. • The best known sight is the Nidaros Cathedral, Norway’s national shrine. • The Archbishop’s residence with its archaeological museum, armoury and the Norwegian Crown Jewels. • Ringve Museum of Music and Sverresborg Folk Museum. • Spectacular Rockheim, the national museum of popular music. • The Old City Bridge and the old town, Bakklandet, with its cosy shops and cafés. • Kristiansten Fort and the prison island of Munkholmen. • Solsiden with its wide range of good restaurants. • Pilgrimage from Lian to Nidaros Cathedral (by tram to Lian). Day 4: Inderøy – Levanger – Munkeby – Trondheim The mediaeval market place for farmers and craftsmen from Jämtland, Sweden, and the inland regions, together with the fishermen and hunters from the coast, was situated in Levanger. • Experience building traditions and urban development from the 1600s and 1700s and impressive wooden architecture. • Gallery Fenka, a former prison, now a modern gallery on the second floor in the cells and courtroom. Pleasant café with home-made baking. • Munkeby Maria Cloister, the world’s northernmost Cistercian monastery. Day 2: Trondheim – Frosta – Stiklestad We drive north on the E6. It’s worth making a detour or two off the E6 to see this historical area and its distinct traces from both the Viking Age and the Middle Ages. • Hegra Fort is a national monument. The installations are intact and include trenches, guns, tunnels, common room, command tower. • Steinvikholm Castle by the Trondheimsfjord was completed in 1532. Olav Engelbrektsson governed Norway for several years from Steinvikholm, as both secular and clerical leader, until he was forced to flee during the Reformation in 1537. • In Tautra we find cloister ruins dating back to 1207, adjacent to the Klostergården, a restaurant serving local specialities and home-brewed beer. • The Maria Cloister in Tautra, fascinating architecture and a fantastic view overlooking the fjord. • The Falstad Centre, former prison camp during World War II, presents the history of the prisoners. • Stiklestad National Culture Centre, overnight accommodation. Day 3: Stiklestad - Inderøy The Battle of Stiklestad, on 29 July 1030, is one of the most famous battles in the history of Norway. King Olaf Haraldsson was killed there. He was canonized a year later, and today the battle represents the introduction of Christianity to Norway. This is why Trondheim became a popular destination for pilgrimages in the Middle Ages.

Day 4: Tydal - Selbu Follow county road Fv 705 to Selbu. • Try your luck at fishing in the River Nea, one of northern Europe’s best trout rivers. • In Selbu, we recommend the Norwegian Radio Museum, Selbu Husflid home crafts centre, Selbu Folk Museum and Granby Gård Farm’s exhibition on emigration to America from Selbu and Tydal. Day 5: Selbu - Stjørdal - Trondheim This route leads to Stjørdal/Hell • Hell Station is a popular destination for English-speaking tourists, not least in order to have their photograph taken beneath the signpost which reads "Hell Gods Expedition". • Rock carvings at Hell and Hegra. • Værnes Church, dating back to 1100 (Norway’s oldest building). • Hegra Fort, a national monument. • Steinvikholm Castle. • Salmon fishing in the River Stjørdalselva, canoeing, tennis, climbing and cycling are popular activities. Day 2: Trondheim – Røros The trip south from Trondheim to Røros takes approx. 2 ½ hours via Gauldalen. • Many people associate Gauldalen with the River Gaula, which is one of the world’s best rivers for anglers who fish Atlantic salmon. • 628 m above sea level we find Røros, the charming mountain town which is inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. • Explore the many backyards, where you will find unique shops and cafés and exciting, local fare at one of the many cosy eating places. Day 3: Røros – Tydal • Guided tour of the mountain town of Røros. • Local food safari. • Visit the Smeltery, one of the many departments at the Røros Museum, which demonstrates how mining was carried out for several centuries, starting in 1644. • Follow county road Fv705 to Tydal, the shortest and most scenic route between Røros and Stjørdal. • The mountain village of Tydal has a distinctive and exotic air about it. Day 2: Oppdal – Trondheim The trip to Trondheim goes via Gauldal, a fantastic region for those who enjoy fishing. • At Ler Footgolf Park in Melhus, the family can test their precision and competitive instinct. • In Trondheim there is ample scope for bowling and go-karting. • In the afternoon we recommend a visit to the Pirbadet water park. • Right next-door you will find Rockheim – the national museum of popular music. . Day 8: Rørvik – Namsos Start the day in Rørvik. Visit the Berggården mansion and the Children’s Museum. Afterwards, drive south on county road Fv 769 to Namsos. Ferry from Hofles to Lund. 5 A "Green Journey" on public transport from coast to mountains in historical Trøndelag Day 1: Oslo – Røros by train Catch the NSB train from Oslo S or Oslo Airport Gardermoen Station, or from Trondheim S Station, to Røros. After a relaxing trip through the Norwegian interior landscape, you will arrive in Røros (4-5 hours from Oslo, 2 hours from Trondheim), the charming mining town in the mountains which is inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. The walk to the nearest hotels only takes a few minutes. Cosy restaurants and cafés serving dishes made from local ingredients are always within walking distance in this unique small town. Day 5: Day trip from Trondheim to the coast at Ørlandet Catch the Kystekspressen boat in the morning from Trondheim harbour to Brekstad in Ørlandet, Fosen. Enjoy the beautiful boat trip out of the Trondheimsfjord and go ashore at the Kysthotellet in Brekstad, where many historical experiences await you: • Austrått Fort, Austrått Castle and the story of “Fru Inger”. • Uthauggården farm. • Ørland Culture Centre with its permanent exhibition of the work of the famous weaving artist Hannah Ryggen. • Birdwatching in the Ramsar area. Day 2: A Day in Røros Røros is situated in an impressive mountain landscape 628 m above sea level. There is lots to do here, such as: • A tour of the city, through the streets with over 100 year old wooden buildings which today are filled with new activities such as cafés, galleries and shops. • Local food safaris including visits to manufacturers and dairies. Learn about the history of local fare and local ingredients. • Visit the Olavsgruva mine and the Smelthytta mining museum. • Rent a bike and enjoy the magnificent mountain countryside. • Visit Bergstadens Ziir, the church that dates back to 1784 and is the pride of the city. • Take a horse and cart ride through the streets of Røros.

Day 6: Day trip to Stiklestad, Norway’s historical birthplace, by train and taxi Catch the NSB train from Trondheim to Verdal and a taxi from Verdal to Stiklestad. The Battle of Stiklestad, 29 July 1030, is one of the most famous battles in the history of Norway. King Olaf Haraldsson was killed there. He was canonized a year later, and today the battle represents the introduction of Christianity to Norway. This is why Trondheim became a popular destination for pilgrimages in the Middle Ages. • Exhibition about the Battle of Stiklestad. • Stiklastadir, a traditional longhouse from the Viking Age. • Stiklestad Church, built on the site of King Olaf’s death. • Stiklestad in Summer, a festival including a travelling theatre, a folk museum and Viking games. Day 3: Røros – Trondheim by train Catch the NSB train to the over 1,000 year old city of Trondheim, Norway’s historical capital, which is today a thriving university city Enjoy your afternoon with the following: • Nidaros Cathedral and the Archbishop’s Residence where Norway’s Crown Jewels are kept. • Guided sightseeing tours by bus. • Guided tours of Trondheim city centre. • Guided bicycle rides. Day 7: Trondheim – Oppdal/Kongsvold by train Catch the train to Oppdal, or further on to Kongsvold. Here, you will find a magnificent area of the Dovrefjell mountains offering a wide range of opportunities: • Guided musk ox safaris. • A walk along the Pilgrim Route. • Botanical gardens at the Kongsvold Fjeldstue mountain lodge. • Mountain fare at Skifer Hotel and Kongsvold Fjeldstue. • Cable car to the summit of Mount Skjørstadhovden with a 360 degree panoramic view. • Rent a bike and take a ride along the marked trails. Day 4: Trondheim – Norway’s historical capital • Ringve Museum of Music and Sverresborg Folk Museum. • Spectacular Rockheim, the national museum of popular music. • The Old Town Bridge and Bakklandet, the old town, with its cosy shops and cafés. • Kristiansten Fort and the prison island of Munkholmen. • Solsiden, with its many excellent restaurants. • “Urban Kayaking” on the River Nidelven. • Pilgrimages from Lian to Nidaros Cathedral (by tram to Lian).

Trondheim Airport, Værnes is served by direct flights from, amongst others, Amsterdam, London, Berlin, Copenhagen and Stockholm. Røros Airport has daily connections with Oslo. Ørland Airport has connections with Aalborg every week via Oslo. There are also smaller airports in Namsos and Rørvik operating domestic flights.

When travelling along the coast of Trøndelag you can take advantage of ferries and fast passenger boats and the Hurtigrute ships. The Hurtigrute Ships In Trøndelag, Trondheim and Rørvik are daily ports of call for the Hurtigrute Ships. Visit www.hurtigruten.com

Car Ferries and Fast Passenger Boats The companies Fosen Namsos Sjø, Fjord1 and Tide operate a number of fast passenger boat and car ferry services along the coast, including the one between Flakk, (Trondheim), and Rørvik (Fosen). The Coastal Express runs daily services between Trondheim and Kristiansund, stopping at several islands and small towns on the way, and on the coast of Namdal, the fast passenger boat "Foldafjord" sails daily between Namsos and Leka, via Rørvik. Sea fishing Recreational fishing in the sea using a rod or handline is free of charge. Please note that you are only allowed to take 15 kg of filleted fish, together with one trophy fish, out of the country. You are not permitted to sell your catch.

The drink and drive limit Norwegian drinking and driving regulations are very strict. The permitted blood-alcohol limit is 0.2 per thousand.

Freshwater fishing For freshwater fishing you are required to purchase a fishing license. In salmon rivers you are required to purchase a local fishing permit. Visit www.inatur.no for further information (only in Norwegian). Local regulations may also apply. Fishing with live bait is not permitted.

Speed limits The normal speed limit in Norway is 80 km/h outside of built-up areas and 50 km/h within built-up areas. In residential areas the speed limit may be reduced to 30 km/h. On Norwegian motorways and certain other main roads the speed limit is 90 km/h or 100 km/h. On these roads the highest speed allowed for motor homes and vehicles towing caravans is 80 km/h.

Disinfection In order to prevent the spreading of the salmon parasite Gyrodactylus Salaris, all fishing tackle used outside Norwegian national borders must be disinfected. The same applies to fishing tackle used in rivers or watercourses in Norway where contagious diseases are known, or suspected, to be present.

Toll roads There are approximately 50 toll roads (toll stations) in Norway, and many of them are unmanned. In order to pay the fee, you can register your debit/credit card at www.autopass.no and use the autopass lane at all toll stations, alternatively you will receive a bill in the mail a few months after passing the tollgate. At manned toll stations you can pay with cash or card.

The right of way The right to move freely through the countryside is an important part of Norwegian cultural heritage. Making fires is not permitted in woodlands or open countryside during the period from 15 April to 15 September. For further information visit www.dirnat.no.

Opening hours - shopping/groceries Shops are usually open Monday-Saturday from 10:00-17:00. Shopping malls are often open longer. Some grocer’s stores are also open on Sundays.

See Norway, - take the train! Trondheim Central Station offers a large number of departures to choose from, whether you are heading north, south or east. From here you can travel all the way up to Bodø in the north, or Oslo in the south. The local trains can take you to any number of fun and interesting towns and places in the Trøndelag region, and they can also take you to Trondheim Airport Værnes.
