”Sense of place”

Examples of sense of place:

towards developments with a unique spirit! What is 'sense of place'? The term 'sense of place' has no universal definition and is not something that is objective – it can mean different things for different people. To some people the sense of place relates to the visual character or identity of a place – in other words the emphasis is on the place itself. To others, it is the feeling of a place that relates to the emotions a place evokes in a person – in other words the emphasis is on the person instead of the place. Some people view the sense of place as a combination of a person's personal subjective feelings about a place as well as the visual character of the place. Although sense of place has no universal definition it is widely accepted as the interaction or relationship between people and their environment and the spatial expressions (e.g. architecture) that emerge from this interaction. Where does 'sense of place' originate from? The term sense of place originated from the Roman Mythological concept of a protective spirit of a place referred to as genius loci. This guardian spirit was often depicted in religious images as a figure holding a snake. In contemporary usage genius loci means the 'spirit of a place' that refers to the distinct

atmosphere or character of a place. The uniqueness of a place is believed to be embedded in the characteristics that distinguish the place from other places.

How to recognise a development with a sense of place? A development that has a sense of place is a development that responds to or fit into its surroundings. In other words it is a development that represents the unique character of the site, town/city and region in which it is located. A development with a sense of place has the following characteristics: ¡ The development looks as if it fits well into its ¡

¡ ¡ ¡

surroundings; The layout planning, architectural styles of the buildings and landscaping are determined by the surroundings (the site, neighbourhood, town/city and region) and cannot be duplicated elsewhere – for example the use of indigenous vegetation and building that represent the architecture of the region; The development has as a unique atmosphere; The development brings a sense of belonging to the people living there; The development has a clear and unique place identity.
