T

he first half of this year has come and gone, with winter almost at an end. Last month I was fortunate enough to escape some of the winter cold and attend the Engel & Völkers international event in Majorca, where 2 of our agents, Sanet Dicks from Potchefstroom and Daniël Gouws from Pretoria New East attended as finalists for the most units sold worldwide. This is a huge privilege to have 2 of the top 10 agents nominated out of all 39 countries, on 5 continents. They definitely made us proud. The good news did not stop there, the last month also saw us signing yet another license for the Hyde Park, Johannesburg area. This is our third licence in 6 months, and we trust that we will soon be in your area, if we are not already. Gold, history, architecture and culture GAUTENG

G

auteng is essentially the powerhouse of South Africa, producing 33% of the GDP. Approximately 9,5m people reside in the province and the main languages are English, Afrikaans, Zulu and Sesotho. Over 40% of the world’s gold reserves are located along the Witwatersrand within the province and millions have flocked to the streets of Johannesburg – the ‘City of Gold’ - since the precious metal was discovered here in 1886. While still a key element of the province’s income, gold is however no longer the fulcrum on which the local economy is hinged. Gauteng has long since diversified and is now also the hub of the country’s financial, business and industrial sectors. From Pretoria, along the Gautrain route to J o h a n n e s bu rg t h e p r ov i n c e a m a z e s w i t h infrastructure and diversity, from some of the world class shopping centres, international sporting venues, world renowned casinos, unsurpassed concert facilities that houses top international acts and even breathtaking nature reserves. Johannesburg is the province’s main city and the core of a metro that also includes Sandton, Randburg, Roodepoort, Midrand and Soweto. To the north lies the second city, Pretoria, which is the country’s capital and the heart of the Tshwane metro, which also includes Centurion, Akasia, Mamelodi and Soshanguve. Then to the east lies the Ekhuruleni metro, which is centred on Germiston and also includes the East Rand towns of Boksburg, Benoni and Springs.

The name Gauteng is derived from the Afrikaans word “goud” (gold) plus the SothoTswana locative suffix "-ng". This referred to the growing gold industry in the province following the 1886 discovery of gold in Johannesburg. In Sesotho the name was used for Johannesburg and surroundings long before it was adopted in 1994 as the official name of a province.

About 45 min drive and 60 km away, Johannesburg is the largest city in South Africa, and one of the 50 largest urban agglomerations in the world as well as the world's largest city not situated on a river, lake, or coastline. Property trends in Johannesburg have shown positive growth in value and there is a shortage of stock currently in the market. Residential homes have experienced a constant rise with apartments outperforming the residential properties in value growth. Average asking price in Johannesburg, for homes are between the value of R1.5 million to R3 million. This is of course area of purchase and property specs sensitive. Gauteng is sure to be a destination of choice offering the best of both cosmopolitan lifestyle and suburban bliss. No matter what your price range, whether you are looking for a flat or a house, you will be sure to find a property to suit your needs and call home.

Seeing that the two main cities, Pretoria and Johannesburg are set to become a polycentric urban region this will make it one of the biggest cities in the world. Despite this, though, Gauteng is a “garden province” that takes pride in its many mature trees and its well-preserved park and wetland areas. Naturally, there is a vast range of property types and prices in Gauteng, with Johannesburg and Pretoria housing some of the country’s most expensive homes in suburbs such as Sandhurst, Hyde Park and Waterkloof. “These main attracting cities have caught the interest of home buyers and investors wishing to grow their portfolio interests in both these historical cities. Both offer the diversity of settling down or growing your investment in to the ever expanding and upgrading suburbs” said Craig Hutchinson, CEO of Engel & Völkers Southern Africa. Pretoria in South Africa is popularly known as the Jacaranda City due to the thousands of Jacaranda trees planted in its streets, parks and gardens. Pretoria has over the years had very diverse cultural influences and this is reflected in the architectural styles that can be found in the city. It ranges from 19th century Dutch, German and British Colonial Architecture to modern, postmodern, neo-modern, and art deco architecture styles with a good mix of a uniquely South African style. Statistics show that gated communities such as security villages and enclosed neighbourhoods are becoming the popular choice. Buying in an enclosed environment- limits traffic and feet passing by, and access is mostly monitored and regulated with boomed gates, security codes and scanning of licence discs and often have patrolling guards and surveillance cameras on each corner. This allows some freedom to go for that jog or walk with the kids without having to worry about your safety. Security features in a home most definitely add to your peace of mind and will increase the value of your property. Engel & Völkers’ 39,5% revenue increase validates expansion strategy internationally

I

n the first half of 2015, the Engel & Völkers Group generated an overall commission revenue of 181.7 million euros. This marks a 36.5% increase in turnover compared to the same period in the previous year (first half of 2014: 133.2 million euros). It also reflects the Group's continuation on its course of growth. “Our strong expansion strategy within and outside of Europe is having a positive impact,” said Sven Odia, Co-CEO of Engel & Völkers AG. This substantial growth can be attributed to the healthy state of the real estate economy and the strong presence of the brand – particularly in Germany, Spain, Italy, North America; Switzerland and South Africa. The large-scale expansion of the network with the addition of new residential property shops has resulted in a 116 % rise in revenues in the USA. On the Spanish mainland, residential property shops recorded a 55 % rise in revenues. The Market Center concept, established in 2013, has contributed to this clear growth trend. The concept envisages central office spaces in the world's

metropolitan and holiday home hotspots, from which up to 300 sales advisors broker high-end residential and commercial real estate throughout the entire metropolitan area or region. Engel & Völkers forecasts continued strong growth in the second half of the year too. It will continue to open new shops, offices and market centres in key strategic growth markets. Further expansion will also see an increase in the need for qualified staff. “By the end of 2015, we aim to recruit 2,000 new sales advisors and increase our global workforce to over 7,000,” Mr. Odia added.

EVENT ZONE Engel & Völkers Broadacres collaborated with Daytona for a full throttle experience Engel & Völkers Broadacres, in collaboration with Daytona hosted a thrilling family event at Dainfern Valley on the 24th of May 2015. The guest list was exclusive to Dainfern residents and VIP clients, offering them the opportunity to test drive exclusive sports cars, provided by Daytona. Lined up by the river were an Aston Martin Rapide S, Aston Martin DB9, a Rolls Royce Ghost and lastly a Mclaren, which accumulated the longest queue. Guests could choose to drive the car themselves, or be driven, reaching speeds of up to 180 kilometres per hour, while others mingled and indulged on crepes and cappuccinos. It was clear by the exhilarating expression of all (children and adults) that this event was a memorable one. “We are proud to have participated in offering our guests a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and thank our agent Jenny Leach, Dainfern management and Daytona management for organising the event” said Craig Hutchison, CEO of Engel & Völkers Southern Africa.

Engel & Völkers Centurion take to the streets with their 67 Minutes on Mandela day Engel & Völkers Centurion worked together to make over 100 sandwiches, boiled eggs as well as donating juice boxes with oranges and apples to hand out to local workers, as well as the needy in the community of Weirda Park, Centurion, Pretoria. “Mandela day reminds us as South Africans to spend time giving back and helping those less fortunate” stated Wendy Williams, License Partner of Engel & Völkers Centurion. The Centurion team are driven to continue with this initiative by setting up their stand every second month as they feel one should contribute to your community on a regular basis.

Engel & Völkers The Parks visits Princess Alice Adoption Home Engel & Völkers The Parks, spent their 67 minutes for Mandela day at the Princess Alice Adoption Home, Westcliffe, Johannesburg. Princess Alice Adoption Home (PAAH) is a temporary place of safety which provides 24 hour residential care to babies who have been consented for adoption, abandoned or occasionally removed from family care. This home cares for 30 babies and toddlers (aged new born to two years old) in a healthy and loving nursery environment. The home is also a safe haven for up to four pregnant girls who are destitute or in crisis. The Parks Team spent quality time with the babies and toddlers, playing with them, reading to them and helping with feeding the babies. Much needed baby toiletries, rice cereals and porridge were donated from the branch. “It was humbling to witness the amazing job the staff take on at the adoption home, they are truly dedicated to the babies, giving them love and attention” noted Justine Russell, Licence Partner of Engel & Völkers The Parks.

Guests were received at their onsite restaurant “the Rusty Oak” with some traditional German Eggnog. For starters pea and bacon soup leading in to a main carvery buffet and ending off with a delicious bread and butter pudding. “Two evenings of fun and laughter, prizes sponsored by Engel & Völkers Durbanville for guests, some much needed relaxation time for this hard working team” Mary-Ann concluded.
