A fabulous collection of two, three and four-bedroom homes, just a short walk from the sand and surf of Constantine Bay.

his stunning new development from Acorn Property Group lies less than a ten-minute walk from Constantine Bay, near Padstow. Known as one of the best surfing beaches in Cornwall, the beach here lies within the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. With pale sweeping sands and rolling waves, it’s one of the famed ‘Seven Bays for Seven Days’, which combine to open up a world of discovery for those who like to lace up their boots and explore. Starting at £725,000, Treglos comprises 20 contemporary apartments, duplexes and penthouses, along with eight three and four-bedroom houses with glorious sea views. Suiting a range of different buyers in search of their own slice of seaside luxury, open-plan living is very much at the heart of these new homes, all of which are designed with life by the coast in mind. They are designed to be lived in – to stand up to the rigours of a life spent exploring the local coastline – at the same time delivering a true feeling of contemporary comfort. Gorgeous designer kitchens come fully fitted with integrated Bosch and Kupperbusch appliances and beautiful stone worktops; Karndean flooring runs

throughout the hallways, living and kitchen areas, with plush soft carpets in the bedrooms. The bathrooms and en-suites, meanwhile, are fully tiled, with modern fixtures from VADO and composite stone vanity tops, and all of this is topped off with underfloor heating – a real treat during the cooler months! Acorn Blue’s design team is well versed when it comes to creating the homes that modern buyers are looking for, and Treglos is a fine example. Each home has been specifically designed around the lifestyle on offer in and around Constantine Bay, including individual surf stores, meaning you needn’t worry about dragging wet and sandy gear into your beautiful new home. Whether you’re in search of a holiday home for the summer months, or a permanent residence by the sea – one that will allow you to trade in the busy city for the gentle pace of life by the water – these fabulous new homes need seeing to be believed. LIVE THE

DREAM We take a look at the year ahead in the exciting world of real estate, gaining an insight from some of Cornwall’s top property experts.

A

s with almost everything else in the Duchy, it’s fair to say that Cornish property is in a league of its own. Every month at Cornwall Living we’re introduced to stunning homes that have found their way to market, from ultra-modern apartments overlooking the Atlantic, to charming character cottages

nestled in their very own pocket of Cornish countryside. This issue, to gain an insight into the current market and the kind of properties that are currently available, we catch up with some of the Duchy’s top property agents, who give us the latest lowdown on all things ‘property’ in Cornwall.

The state of the market Now that we’ve put to bed what proved to be a tumultuous and politically uncertain 2019, we thought this would be a good time to check in and see what the market forecast is for the year ahead. Considering all of the Brexit and political uncertainty that we experienced in 2019, award-winning property agents, Rohrs and Rowe, tell us: “The demand for quality properties in the county proved to be much stronger than some may have expected, with record-breaking prices achieved in some coastal areas.” Into 2020 and that trend looks set to continue. “With the general election now over and Brexit looking as though it will finally happen,” reveals Matthew Rowe, “we are already experiencing a busy start to 2020. Buyers seem to have the attitude that they just want to get on with life, so it seems likely that 2020 will follow a similar pattern to 2019, albeit with a slightly more optimistic outlook.”

Josephine Ashby, from north Cornwall estate agency John Bray and Partners, tells us: “Buyers remain focused on their dream to own a holiday home or, in some cases, relocate to the north Cornwall coast. As our lives become increasingly busy, buyers are keen to secure somewhere that allows them to spend quality time with their loved ones, sometimes with a view to letting it out when they’re not using it.” Sales on the north coast have bucked the national trend and the John Bray and Partners team continue to receive instructions all year round – testament to the area's enduring appeal. Already seeing increased activity from buyers and sellers, Miranda from Clive Pearce sums it all up, telling us that “there hasn’t been a better time to move home!”

Top selling tips For those of you thinking about selling your Cornish home, whether you’re hoping to upsize, down-size, or are simply in the market for a change, to help improve your chances of a successful sale, we ask our agents for their top selling tips. First and foremost, Laura at Philip Martin tells us that it’s key you spend some time finding an agent with extensive knowledge of the area. Miranda at Clive Pearce agrees, and rightly points out that “local knowledge and experience are crucial,” also highlighting the importance of having an agent accompany prospective buyers on viewing. “Not only do buyers feel more comfortable with this, it also means that the agent is able to work comfortably with both buyer and seller, ensuring the best outcome for the seller.”

On the matter of presentation, Martyn Rohrs tells us: “It’s very hard to change people’s first impressions, so it’s imperative to create the right experience first time round.” He suggests investing in presentation “both internally and externally, as buyers will see and feel that it’s a home you have really enjoyed living in.” Often, confirms Chris at Savills, “a little investment in preparation at the outset will generate significant reward when it comes to a sale.” Josephine Ashby advises professional photography, drone aerials and videos as the best way in which to present a property to its strongest advantage, but she takes it one step further, explaining that pricing and presentation are both key! “While sales remain strong, strategic pricing has been the key to success over the last year.” In fact, she informs us, “competitive pricing has

attracted multiple bids and delivered the best result for serious sellers,” with some properties achieving in excess of 10% over their guide price! When preparing your home for market, Richard at My Place in Cornwall stresses the importance of de-cluttering. “A prospective buyer will want to envisage themselves living in the property when they come to view it,” he explains, “so simply placing it on the market,” without any consideration of presentation, “doesn’t guarantee the result you are hoping for.” One thing that Rohrs and Rowe continue to experience is a high demand for properties with established income streams, or those with the potential for it. Buyers moving to Cornwall are often looking to supplement their income, explains Martyn, as they are usually taking some kind of pay cut or reduction in income in order to move here. “Last year,” he tells us, “we sold several properties with income or income potential,” a great example being Jersey Cottage at Constantine Bay near Padstow, for which, he explains, “we were inundated with interest and viewings.”

Finding your dream home One of the most exciting aspects of moving house has to be searching for your next home; as you browse through the online listings and sign up to local agents’ mailing lists, you never know when ‘the one’ is going to appear in your feed. Having recently bought my first home, I know full well how exciting that is! There is, however, a downside, and during our search, we viewed a number of properties that simply didn’t tick any of our boxes. That being the case, I thought it would be useful to ask our agents what advice they have to offer those of you searching for your dream Cornish home. Chris at Savills starts us off, pointing out that Cornwall is a large county with an extremely diverse property market. With that in mind, he advises: “Don’t pigeonhole yourself to one specific area as often we find that buyers choose a property that’s well outside of their original search criteria.” Indeed, as Richard Yeo says, it’s easy to get caught up searching for homes in unaffordable areas, “when in reality, both the north and south coasts are accessible within just a short drive.” The best place to start, says Matthew Rowe, is contacting a reputable agent to help you understand the market you’re buying into. “The Cornish market is different to most of the UK, as premium property values can often be dictated by intangible features such as water views and proximity to the many lifestyle benefits that Cornwall provides.” Move slightly in land, however, and Richard reveals that “you can acquire some beautiful countryside property for better value, and you’ll end up with more bang for your buck in terms of indoor and outdoor space.” Surely that’s something we can all get on board with! To start your search, Richard suggests listing the things that are most important to you, including the things you currently enjoy most about where you live, what you would miss and what you need. “Cornwall is a change

of lifestyle that many people enjoy,” he continues, “but it is very different to fast paced city living!” Before you book a viewing, Laura at Philip Martin suggests doing a ‘drive by’. “Location of the property is just as important as the property itself,” she explains. “An agent can only advise you so far on the area, and only you will know whether the proximity of the neighbours is too close, or if the amenities are too far away. By doing a drive by, you can save yourself and the vendors a lot of time.” Ultimately, your search criteria should be at the forefront of the entire process, which is why Clive Pearce recommend taking the time to pop in and talk to estate agents. “By getting to know them and letting the agents get to know you, you can make sure that you’re top of the list to get a call when a property comes to market, often giving you a head start before it hits the internet.”

Josephine reveals that most agents run a ‘hot prospects list’, updating potential buyers of new instructions even before they come to market. She also highlights the importance of automating your search; try setting up alerts for your search areas and criteria, so you never miss a new instruction. “Register with the predominant agents in the geographical area that you’re looking to purchase in and keep in touch regularly to update them of your situation. “Remember to ask about their private sales too,” she continues, “as not all properties come to the open market.” In fact, John Bray sold £22M of property off-market last year, from classic Cornish cottages to luxury homes in prime waterfront locations, “so it is well worth opening a dialogue with your agent to let them know what you’re looking for.” The ‘L’ factor I am, of course, referring to ‘Location’ – something that’s extraordinarily difficult to narrow down in a county as large and as consistently desirable as Cornwall. So where should you be looking? John Bray and Partners specialise in north Cornwall. Josephine tells us: “We’re lucky that Rock, Polzeath, Trebetherick and Port Isaac continue to hold strong appeal. ” She points us to the outlying hamlets and villages like Trelights, Chapel Amble, St Kew and Tregardock, which she tells us “are very close to these popular locations but offer a lower price per square foot.”

CORNWALL LIVING

Remember to ask about their private sales too

Perhaps you’re in the market for something in need of a little TLC, in which case Philip Martin have sold and agreed many renovation and refurbishment properties in the village of Chacewater and the surrounding area. Approximately five miles from Truro, Sean tells us that Chacewater nevertheless benefits from stunning countryside surroundings, so the draw of the village’s locale – not to mention its old cottages in need of refurbishment – really speaks for itself. South east Cornwall is becoming increasingly popular too, according to Chris at Savills. He points us to the stretch of coastline between Hayle and Perranporth, which “still offers good value and has some great opportunities.” Just up the coast, Rohrs and Rowe highlight Newquay, not necessarily as ‘up and coming’, but greatly improved thanks to recent investment. Illustrating the point, Rohrs and Rowe sold two excellent properties at the end of last year, both enjoying competitive bidding situations that resulted in offers vastly in excess of their guide prices! Martyn elaborates: “Newquay has been renowned for its world class beaches and surfing waters for many years. It also now enjoys many fantastic restaurants and bars, and due to the recent investment in the town, there are now some superb properties too.” Combine this with easy access to the UK and Europe from its excellent airport, continues Matthew, “you can understand why so many people are now wanting to live in or buy a property near Newquay.”

n My Place in Cornwall

Finally, Richard at My Place in Cornwall reveals growing demand for property in St Columb Major. First and foremost, the location “represents good value for money,” but it’s also “small enough to enjoy a quiet lifestyle whilst containing just about all the local amenities you might need.” Located just a few miles from in-demand spots like Watergate Bay, Padstow and Wadebridge, Richard finishes: “We think St Columb could be one of the most popular areas for those relocating to Cornwall, or wanting to move closer to the coast.” Well, there you have it! With such a diverse offering of homes to choose from, it's reassuring to know that Cornwall is home to a wealth of industry experts to help you navigate the market. From fishermen’s cottages in the harbour villages, to the farms on the edge of the peninsula’s rural villages, it’s no wonder the Roseland continues to prove so attractive to those looking for their next property. It’s the perfect location for those seeking a lifestyle change, a holiday home, or a place to raise a family. There are some amazing properties currently on the market, many of which are available through the experts at Philip Martin. Each of them shows off the unique beauty of the Roseland in its own way, and each offers something different to a variety of buyers. Our first visit is to the idyllic Apple Cottage in Crohans, Veryan. This beautifully presented one-bedroom character property commands a quiet countryside setting, with a delightful garden focusing on a newly-erected summerhouse. Perfect as either a holiday home or full-time residence, Apple Cottage is just the ticket for anyone looking for peace and tranquillity. Guide price £265,000 Perhaps you’re looking for views of the coast? If so, look no further than Fuschia Cottage in Portloe. Located in a central position within this popular harbour village, this semi-detached, three-bedroom property enjoys views of the harbour. Whilst in need of refurbishment, Fuschia Cottage should not be ignored as, given its location and the sheer potential on offer, it really is a rarity on today’s market. Guide price £375,000

Because of the peaceful tranquillity on offer throughout the Roseland, it’s often exactly what those hoping to get away from the rat race are looking for. If this sounds like you, then you’ll love Trebyan in Veryan Green. Just a mile from the sandy beaches of Pendower and Carne, and with a good range of facilities for daily needs nearby, this three-bedroom detached bungalow boasts a generous plot with beautifully presented gardens, making it a wonderful retirement opportunity. Guide price £475,000 Finally, for those in search of something truly special, it’s unlikely that you’ll find anywhere better than Treviles Manor, set within the parish of Ruanlanihorne. Built in the late 17th century and with 98 acres, this is arguably one of the most important and strategically positioned manor houses on the entire peninsula. Occupying an ancient site with a rich history, this farming estate includes a two-bedroom cottage, a one-bedroom apartment, swimming pool, walled gardens, plus traditional and commercial farm buildings. A property of unique charm, you’ll be hard pressed to find this property’s equal. Guide price £3,250,000 for the whole; lots from £2,650,000

fter opening for business in January last year, Newquay based architectural firm, West Coast Architecture, has quickly built a reputation for passion and enthusiasm in all aspects of their field. And while it is still only a small practice, it has, nonetheless, been making waves in Cornwall’s architectural scene! With more than ten years’ combined experience in architecture and construction in Cornwall, the West Coast Architecture team have been driving their vision forward since January 2019, placing their focus on private residential projects, covering the Concept Design stage, Developed Design stage (usually for planning applications) and the Technical Design stage. But it’s their approach to customer service that sets them apart. Lead Architect, Antonio Sánchez explains: “We design our projects as if we were going to live in them. We take a very personal approach, taking care of our clients and working together with them to incorporate their ideas into our designs.”

In their first 18 months alone, West Coast Architecture have been involved in over thirty projects, ranging from home refurbishments and extensions to new builds. Their work has covered all stages of the process, from concept designs and developed design for achieving planning permission, to handling the technical designs for building regulations and construction drawings. Put simply, just 18 months after the firm was launched, West Coast Architecture has already proven its prestige, and with lots of new projects in the pipeline, it continues to expand. What this means is that if you’re looking for a team of passionate and enthusiastic young architects who love good design, to bring your project to life as if it was their own, be sure to get in touch with Antonio and the West Coast team.

Buzzing with an energy that screams creativity and art, the High Street in Falmouth is home to an arts and crafts emporium: The Grey Lurcher.

T

hree years ago, walking the cobbled streets of Falmouth, Julie and Chris Duddle noticed a sign in a shop window that simply read 'To Rent'. With shared backgrounds in textile design and retail, an ideal opportunity had presented itself to them. The High Street appealed to them for its unique character and the numerous other small creative businesses that line the street. Surrounded by cafés, restaurants, and incredible views it certainly exudes a chilled vibe. Opening in October 2017 with a lot of hope and very little stock, The Grey Lurcher was up and running. Positively evolving over the last three years and sticking to a formula of providing gifts for you or your home, The Grey Lurcher also stocks the iconic range of paints from Annie Sloane. It was during the second year of trading when Annie Sloan, curious as to whether The Grey Lurcher would like to stock her paint, approached Julie and Chris. Julie jumped at the chance; as an artist and textile designer, it seemed the right product to sell. After training with Annie Sloan at her headquarters in Oxford, it was

go-time, and fans of Sloan soon became regular customers! The Grey Lurcher stocks everything required to up-cycle furniture, including paintbrushes, waxes and varnishes. Samples of Annie Sloan fabrics are on display, along with books and stencils. During the Covid-19 lockdown, the paint sales increased and Julie even had time to wield a brush herself, splitting her time between painting furniture at home, and renovating the house that they’d recently moved into! An avid up-cycler, Julie is a fountain of knowledge on the subject and is always happy to offer advice on colour and technique. One-to-one workshops are available, but with the amazing resources on offer at the Annie Sloan website (anniesloan.com), it is just a case of rolling up your sleeves and getting stuck in!

Duke Stone of Cornwall brings a wealth of experience to your home improvement project, bringing the timeless style of stone to any kind of home.

H

aving spent so much time this year unable to leave our houses, here in the UK, home improvement has never been closer to the front of our minds. Whether you spent lockdown inside or out, chances are that at some point, you began to notice aspects of your living space that could really do with improving. It could be an old, tired kitchen, outdated tiles in the bathroom, or perhaps the lack of a decent barbeque area. Alternatively, it could be that you own a holiday property in Cornwall and want to keep guests returning time and time again. Whatever’s on your list of improvements, and whatever the reason why, after a 2020 many of us would rather forget, why not give yourself a 2021 to look forward to by starting them now? Whether you’re looking to make changes inside or out in your garden, Duke Stone has extensive experience in the design and manufacture of both natural and engineered stone, meaning that with their help, you can easily incorporate into your property the timeless elegance and stunning style of such beautiful materials. Let’s start at the heart of the home – the

CORNWALL LIVING

HOME

kitchen. Natural stone promises to enhance any scheme, from traditional to modern, creating a truly unique space that you and your family can enjoy for years to come. Durable and hard-wearing, a hand-crafted stone worktop will last a lifetime, which incidentally also makes it a fantastic, lowmaintenance option for anybody hoping to give their holiday let a makeover. In fact, natural stone can be used to great effect throughout the home, its versatility only limited by your imagination. Marble and limestone, for instance, are great for use in the bathroom as wall panels, flooring, vanities and basins, creating a luxurious space in which you – or your holiday guests – can escape and recharge. You can also use granite and slate – both hard-wearing – to help breathe new life into your existing fireplace or wood burner. To put it simply, anywhere that needs a beautiful, hard-wearing surface, can be turned into a real character feature using the right natural materials. Heading outside and into the garden, sandstone and slate are both beautiful

materials that can be used for paving and cladding. Reclaimed stone can be used to add ornamental charm to your garden space – perhaps an original sign for your house – or why not work with Duke Stone to build a bespoke outdoor barbeque? Whichever space it is that you’re hoping to renovate, be it your kitchen, bathroom, garden, or indeed your entire home, it makes sense to use materials that are both timeless and hardy enough to last a lifetime. By choosing the right materials – and working with the experts at Duke Stone to design and manufacture solutions precisely tailored to your home and lifestyle – not only could you potentially add value to your home, your space will also become one that’s cherished by you, or your holiday guests, for many years to come.

den’s owner Tracy Johnson told us how they have used the lockdown period to really get to grips with all the new products that were coming on the market this year. She said that in the last 18 months there has been a huge shift in how people heat their homes. With many families now living in well insulated houses there was not always the need for a huge roaring fire. Customers are demanding a little more technology from the main focal point of the room and do not want to compromise on looks or style. With mood lighting and app controls, todays modern fires have really caught up with the 21st century, she told us. So as not to disappoint, Tracy and the team have made significant changes to the ranges of fires and fireplaces that they have on display in their showroom. They have undergone a big refurbishment installing lots of exciting new products.

She went on to say: “We have looked at all the best manufacturers and have chosen a good cross section of the best fires and fireplaces on the market. These include the latest range of modern electric fires that really give the 'wow' feature to any home.” However, she added that they have not forgotten about gas fires for those customers who love the natural glow of a real flame and the look of a real fire: “We have totally updated our gas fire range to include the latest high efficiency models from modern to traditional styles we have something to suit everyone.” And not forgetting what Eden do best. Bespoke fireplaces! The team offers a complete service to its customers including a full survey by a qualified installer to make sure that the customer gets exactly the right products to suit their home and their individual style. Fireplaces can be made in many colours and materials and with over 60 designs in their portfolio they are confident you will find just the right style. Everything in their range can be made to size, so if you do not want to replace your existing carpet but would love a new fireplace then that’s no problem at all; the surveyor will measure up and Eden will make it to suit. The showroom is operating as normal now and they have put measures in place to keep everyone as safe as possible. They are encouraging customers to make an appointment to visit. This way you can spend more time in store discussing your requirements, and they are only allowing one family or bubble in the showroom at a time. The Eden Hearth & Home team look forward to seeing you in the showroom soon.

ave you just spent a dream holiday in Cornwall and are now yearning to come back on a more regular basis? If the answer’s yes, then purchasing a lodge on one of Cornwall’s luxury sites could unlock a lifetime of Cornish escapes for you and your family. Lodge ownership has transformed how we holiday and is becoming more and more popular, especially with recent restrictions and uncertainty over foreign travel. The staycation market in the UK (and Cornwall is no exception) is booming, and now has never been a better time to invest in your holiday future. With this in mind, we wanted to investigate some of the benefits of lodge ownership here in the Duchy and reveal some great holiday lifestyle ownership opportunities. So where to begin? Well there’s no doubt that location, location, location is going to be the main priority for most. Holiday home sites in Cornwall occupy some spectacular positions, from coastal parks with glorious sea views to tranquil countryside areas. Each offer a unique setting, whether you’re looking for a vibrant family park or a quieter couple’s retreat. It’s worth planning a fact-finding trip to look at all of the sites on offer; you could even rent a lodge in the park you think you might want to buy into, to get a real feel for the site and the local area. Price is also going to be high on the list of things to consider. The demand for coastal real estate in Cornwall has resulted in high prices and prime locations are often snapped up very quickly. Suitable, traditional ‘bricks and mortar’ holiday homes can be above budget for some, so lodge ownership can often be a more cost-effective solution. Purchase of a lodge, or static caravan, does not incur stamp duty and conveyancing fees upfront as well as the ongoing council tax, maintenance bills and security issues of a traditional second home.

Lodge sites are usually gated communities, with on-site, year-round security for your peace of mind. On many sites, you can also sub-let your lodge, renting out any unwanted weeks to give you a return on your investment. Some parks will even handle the letting for you, while others offer a guaranteed rental return. Shared use is also a great benefit. Owning a lodge can be a fantastic way to ensure that multi generations of family are able to enjoy the benefits of a holiday in Cornwall. Although there can be the option of purchasing pre-owned lodges, buying a brand new lodge will usually give you access to the best offers, while benefiting from the most modern design and specification. This option will also give you the greatest choice of location. Facilities are another consideration, particularly for families. Play parks, swimming pools, on-site entertainment venues, restaurants and shops are just some of the conveniences that can make your holiday that little bit easier.

On larger sites, and there are even some that have private beaches, you can park your car outside your private lodge and not need to move it again for the duration of your stay. Everything you need to spend a dreamy holiday can be right on your doorstep. However, lodge companies realise that this isn’t for everyone and so many offer quieter sites as part of their portfolios for those looking for the simpler pleasures. Aria Resorts (ariaresorts.co.uk) currently has five resorts in Cornwall to choose from: Newquay Bay Resort, Newperran, Retallack Resort and Spa, Widemouth Fields and Bude Holiday Resort. The lodges start from just £91,995 but there is also the choice of some super-luxurious options available with roof terraces and sunken hot tubs to give you the very best holiday home lifestyle. Investment properties at Retallack Resort and Spa start from £225,000. Aria's lodges are a brilliant holiday home option because of their size and spaciousness and the fact that they also come fully furnished and with a really high level of luxury. It wouldn't be unusual to find walk-in wardrobes, breakfast bars, en-suite bathrooms, larders and all-important wine coolers in your property. Aria Resorts’ lodges benefit from easy upkeep, great facilities and often those managed letting options we mentioned too, so you can earn a bit of cash to help cover your costs.

Aria Resorts is also breaking the mould of holiday home ownership in Cornwall with its brand new barn-style lodges at its newest holiday home development, The Meadows, which you will find at five-star Retallack Resort and Spa. Available in two, three and four-bedroom options, these boutique holiday homes are sold with a structural warranty, 999 year lease, which means they can be purchased with a mortgage and resold on the open market. They enjoy peaceful lakeside and countryside settings with designer interiors and unique architectural designs which are striking. These brand new lodges are also ideal for buy-to-let buyers as Aria offers the choice of a managed letting service or 7% fixed return option which is available to qualifying investors (terms and conditions apply). You’ll find some stunning lodge resorts in Padstow, Porthtowan and Perranporth courtesy of Valley Resorts (valleyresorts. co.uk) with holiday homes starting from £130,000. If you are considering lodge ownership as an investment then the experts there can give advice on investment yields based on previous holiday rentals. If you need finance to support your purchase they can also help you to find approved major lenders for each site. Valley Resorts has recognised that the uncertainty around the impact of Brexit, the state of the British economy and the Coronavirus pandemic has seen visitors and investors reviewing their options. An unprecedented level of enquiries in the first half of this year has been driven by people now feeling more secure in making decisions that are based on investing in the UK. Prospective buyers have realised that Cornwall, and in turn Valley Resorts’ locations, provide a guest-accessible, cost-effective investment opportunity, plus the benefit of being easily available for their own use as and when they want. Not only is there a cost benefit, but Valley Resorts ownership means your second home-

from-home is never far away. There’s no waiting around at airports, no jet lag, simply hop in your car and in a couple of hours you can be sipping something cold on your balcony. And if you are planning on visiting numerous times during the year, not only will you start to feel part of the local community, you will be supporting its economy too. For a holiday home close to the ocean, Atlantic Coast (atlanticcoastpark.co.uk) at Upton Towans near Hayle, is a National Tourist Board four-star graded park as well as being a winner of David Bellamy Gold Conservation Award. Owned by Coastdale Parks, a long established, family owned company, Atlantic Coast offers a ‘try before you buy’ option. With this scheme, you can experience a holiday in one of the stylish lodges to see whether it meets your holiday expectations. Should you subsequently purchase a holiday home, the full cost of the weekend break will be offset against the cost of your holiday home. The park offers purchase options to suit all budgets, tastes and model preferences. The team endeavour to find the holiday home of your dreams and publish a regular list of all stock available for sale for immediate purchase. Alternatively, should you prefer a make and model not currently in stock, then they can order that for you. There’s no doubt that lodge ownership is a brilliant way to explore Cornwall on your holidays, which has been identified by Parkdean Resorts (parkdeanresorts.co.uk) in their recent 2020 Staycation Market Report. With eight holiday parks across Cornwall, wherever you choose to take your holiday in Cornwall, you’ll be able to enjoy fantastic facilities on park, from swimming pools to bars and restaurants. Catherine Lynn, Chief Customer Officer at Parkdean Resorts, said: “The Coronavirus pandemic has really affected many parts of our lives in 2020, including how we holiday, with many would-be holidaymakers being stuck at home. However, our data gives us cause for optimism. We expect to see a big upturn in the staycation market this summer, and beyond into 2021. We are so excited that our parks are reopening all over the country, giving people the opportunity to see all the amazing things that the UK has to offer, in a safe and clean environment. We’ve implemented measures to ensure all of our guests and staff are safe, to be able to enjoy these wide open spaces and much needed fresh air.” Parkdean’s brand new ‘Lodges Range’ delivers a carefully curated collection of the finest holiday homes from brands, including Willerby, Swift and Prestige. They offer the ultimate luxury, are meticulously designed and come stylishly fitted with top of the range conveniences and furnishings. Parkdean also offers two letting schemes, that can help to offset running costs; a Guaranteed Income Scheme or an Easylet option. So if you love lazy days on the sands or enjoy coastal walks and sea views you’ll be spoilt for choice. This is just a taste of some of the opportunities for lodge ownership in Cornwall. Stepping inside Dune House you are welcomed into a large and luxurious open-plan living, kitchen and dining area. Large patio doors slide open and connect the inside space with the decking and lawned garden. For the cooler months, Dune House has underfloor heating downstairs, as well as a stylish contemporary woodburner to keep you toasty. There is also a large snug or games room, and purpose-built après-surf changing rooms with two showers and space for drying wetsuits. Upstairs you have four bedrooms – two king-sized and two twins. The two doubles share a beautiful decked and glazed west-facing balcony, whilst the twins boast views of Godrevy Lighthouse and open farmland. There’s plenty of space in the large enclosed garden, which has a shed for beach essentials such as body/surfboards and windbreaks, and a barbeque for al fresco feasts. Best of all, Gwithian beach is only a five-minute stroll over the beautiful sand dunes.

ocated on the very edge of the Lizard peninsula, with the cool waters of the Atlantic ocean stretching before you, is the Housel Bay Hotel and Restaurant. A wildly beautiful place to visit this year, it provides a sanctuary of seclusion for those looking for a relaxing escape. Whether you’re after a weekend away or want to seek refuge at the hotel for a delicious roast on a Sunday afternoon, the doors are always open for those wishing to take a break from the stresses of modern life. It’s not surprising that Housel Bay’s exceptional location in one of Cornwall’s most remote and beautiful areas acts as inspiration behind every aspect of your stay. Everything from the décor to the menu encourages going ‘back to nature’, so that you can immerse yourself in your surroundings and just breathe again. Not to mention that the restaurant has recently been renovated to incorporate nature into the design as well as collaborating with local artists and designers such as Jo Downs and Tom Raffield.

FOODIE

é ABOVE Located on the very edge of the Lizard peninsula

The hotel is lucky to be perched right on nature’s edge, at the most southerly point of the UK, and the idea is to echo the coastal surroundings in the restaurant through both the setting and the food. We hear from Marketing Manager Phoebe who tells us: “We invite our guests to immerse themselves in nature when they arrive, walk the coastal paths, and take a breath. when re-designing the restaurant this was all at the forefront of design inspiration.” The Head Chef, Joseph Fallowfield, has also been influenced by the hotel’s natural surroundings. His food is guided by the seasons, with the spring menu featuring a range of fresh, delicate and beautifully balanced dishes that are sure to leave you wanting more. “Housel Bay is nestled into rugged cliffs and surrounded by coastal grasslands,” Joe says. “This provides a huge opportunity for our chefs to forage for ingredients both on the beach and on land. The road to the hotel is full of wild garlic, three-cornered leek and sorrel so it seems logical that they will be on the menu.” Joe has also curated a tasting menu with the intention to provide an even more unique dining experience. “Chefs should always cook for their customers and this is the logic behind our tasting menu. Our guests are exploring Cornwall. At dinner, we want to continue this by creating dishes designed around ingredients from the locations that surround us. For example, we have a local fishing cove, Cadgwith, where we source the majority of our seafood and where the majority of our guests visit, so it

makes sense for me to create a dish based around that, and the same goes for the other dishes on the tasting menu.” When you visit Housel Bay you are set to experience quiet roads, clean air and beautiful walks along the South West Coast Path. All this served alongside stunning views of the Lizard peninsula. “Each season has its own beautiful quality,” says Phoebe, “and we want to showcase them all.” To embrace the season of spring at the Housel Bay Hotel, and to enjoy the carefully curated menu that champions local produce and a seasonal approach, get in touch with the friendly team who will be more than happy to help. It really couldn’t be a better place to escape and re-set, so if you’re in need of some space and fresh air this year, you know where to go.

A CARING APPROACH There are countless agencies that can represent your holiday let, and choosing the right one is a big decision. é MAIN Do you have a coastal property?

W

hen it comes to choosing an agency to represent your holiday let, should you choose a big national brand, or a local agency? Forever Cornwall owner, Phil Gendall, gives us five reasons why it makes sense to choose one that really cares for owners and guests, as well as the environment!

Caring leads to success The first question we are always asked is about occupancy and income. Rest assured, we have some of the highest occupancy levels and property incomes possible. We achieve this by helping you to present your home in the best possible way, and by looking after every customer – because we believe that caring is the key to success.

Knowing you and your holiday home If an agency has hundreds or even thousands of cottages listed, are these impressive numbers or a warning sign? When considering an agency, ask yourself if they really know about the homes and the owners that they represent. We help our owners with expert letting advice that’s tailored to them, and not a one size fits all approach.

Targeted expert marketing We are a 100% independent local agency, which helps us to deliver highly effective marketing too. We know both Cornwall and our guests inside out, allowing us to target the right places at the right people. Our digital communications expertise combined with our professional property and design services will

ensure your holiday home is a roaring success. Can a nation-wide agency offer you that?

Enviable customer service Forever Cornwall is proud to have ‘grown slowly’, and our friendly and focused customer service team has built a community of loyal guests. First-rate customer service achieves excellent return rates and great recommendations. Just ask Google, Feefo or any other review site. If an agency can’t provide this, walk away.

é ABOVE

Bringing homes to life with expert interior design

Thinking local and global We shouldn’t only think about the bottom line these days. Guests are increasingly demanding that businesses play their part in protecting the environment and supporting the local economy. Being a Cornish business, Forever Cornwall has always done this by partnering with local business and charities. We also proudly offset the carbon impact from the business and cottages. So, if you want to begin the letting journey or are looking to change agencies, why not consider one that looks after you, your home and income, and the environment. To find out more, visit the Forever Cornwall website, or for no-commitment advice, be sure to give the team a call.

é ABOVE What better way to relax than your own private hot tub?

ê BELOW Kick back in the comfort of your own stylish lodge

Regular readers of our Special London Edition will remember that last year, we featured a selection of the lodges available at Atlantic Coast. These included the penthouselike Regal Artisan Lodge, worth £94,995, the Regal Lulworth worth £49,995, and the Regal Kingsbury worth £44,995. Each has something different to offer buyers; the Regal Artisan feels like stepping into a penthouse apartment, with eye catching, boutique styling all round, top-of-the-range mod-cons like a wine fridge and a large American style fridge freezer, plus a gorgeous master bedroom suite. The Regal Lulworth, meanwhile – brand new last year – features bright, colourful interiors, fabulous lake views and generously sized accommodation, and the Regal Kingsbury boasts intelligent use of space with all the comforts of home. Each offers clever use of space, optimising how you use your space during the precious days you’re able to steal away by the coast, and each really does feel like a home from home. So, what’s new for 2020? Well, adding to the Regal range is the Regal Hartland 2020 – a new luxurious lodge that’s sure to impress as soon as you cross the threshold. With a high attention to detail evident in every aspect of the design, there’s a wonderful

sense of space and clever storage solutions throughout. There’s also a palpable feeling of luxury to be enjoyed, from the lodge’s stylish lounge, to the integrated television bed in the master bedroom. A total of two bedrooms make up the accommodation, with a twin bedroom – complete with twin beds – making this the perfect lodge for a family holiday. A large open-plan kitchen lies at the heart of it all, which is great for entertaining friends and family, and the well-planned, fully fitted kitchen features everything you could possibly need to cook up a storm with Cornwall’s renowned homegrown produce, including a spacious larder unit, a range cooker (a real show-stopper!), integrated dishwasher and a washing machine. The lodge is beautifully furnished throughout, and with Bluetooth compatible speakers built into the ceiling, after a day spent exploring the nearby coastline, the Regal Hartland really does feel like a home away from home, and you couldn’t really ask for anything else when it comes to enjoying an evening spent relaxing. Sure to impress from the moment you step inside, and starting at £119,995, if you’ve been contemplating investing in your family’s future holidays, Atlantic Coast’s brand-new Regal Hartland Lodge needs seeing to be believed. Tremaine Green Cottages has become a popular choice for the ultimate Cornish getaway, and it's really not hard to see why!

é TOP Beauitful Cornish cottages

S

urrounded by nature and acres of land, it’s easy to see why a stay at Tremaine Green Cottages has become the popular choice for the ultimate Cornish getaway. Walking through the arches and into the grounds of Tremaine Green Cottages, you instantly feel an air of peace. The period Cornish cottages set within a traditional farmyard provide escape from the outside world and all are made from mellow Cornish stone, constructed from granite and blue Delabole slate, once mined at a nearby quarry. The tranquil surroundings of Tremaine are enriched by an abundance of trees and hedgerows, which safely encapsulate the well-established, award-winning gardens. Being safely set away from main roads, the grounds are perfect for children to explore and play without the worry of traffic. There are also many different animals onsite to get chummy with, including Pygmy goats, miniature horses, and a super friendly Great Dane. If this isn't enough to keep the family entertained, there is also a tennis court if you are up for a set. Situated in the perfect location to explore south Cornwall’s enchanting coves, this stretch of coastline is protected by the National Trust and is fondly known as the ‘smugglers' coast’, steeped in tales of piracy and bootlegging from ages past. Tremaine Green’s closest cove, Lansallos, is just 2.5

miles away and was described by BBC's Coast as “the quintessential Cornish smuggler's cove”. Who knows, you might even stumble across some long-lost treasure! The neighbouring towns of Fowey and Looe are nearby, offering exceptional restaurants, bars and artisan shops to explore. After a busy day traversing south Cornwall’s secret coastal coves, shimmering waters and idyllic fishing harbours, you can look forward to returning to the cosiness of your holiday cottage. Nothing beats watching the Cornish sunset from the patio with a glass of something chilled. However, if it’s a cool evening, you could always snuggle down in front of the comforting glow of the fire. Tremaine encourages the opportunity for families to unite together, with one, two, and three-bedroom cottages available. There’s also the option to rent multiple cottages, perfect for larger families or that special family celebration. With the ability to accommodate 45 people, all in beds, and with up to two dogs allowed per cottage, Tremaine Green Cottages provides all the magical ingredients for a truly memorable holiday.

he beautiful and historic Trevince Estate gardens have been in the same family since the 1280s and are a perfect day out for families, plant lovers and curious souls alike. The restored greenhouse is bursting with lemons and as spring arrives, the garden comes exuberantly back to life. Open from 26th March, until 26th September, on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and all Bank Holiday Mondays from 10am to 5pm, the gardens and café are well worth a visit! The wonderful woodland walk is dotted with many Rhododendrons, Camellias and magnolias. The new growth of the tree ferns that fringe the lower path is reflected in the lime green tips of the conifers as they awaken to the vitality of the season. Take some time to sit and relax, enjoying some of the delightful hidden surprises like the twig-built Nest. The bluebells have broken ground and will soon be in full flower. Spring is the time of year when the atmospheric walled kitchen garden is filled with apple and pear blossom, soon swelling into embryo fruit. The first shoots of the productive vegetable garden are developing into larger plants and the harvest of rhubarb has begun. The cutting

garden is also coming back to life with tulips blooming and paeonies budding. A mass of Amaryllis belladonna leaf is a sign of the wonderful show to come later in the year. In the tranquil Pond Garden, Easter time is when the handkerchief tree starts to flower, and the tree heather is a hive of activity with hundreds of pollinating insects. Try and spot one of the 17 species of dragonfly recorded there last year, then finish your wanderings with a light lunch or a hot drink and a delicious cake in the Cart Shed Café. Join garden volunteers on Tuesdays or Wednesdays for fresh air, friendship and fun; or Trevince creative workshops are a great way to get inspired and learn new skills. I

f you love the outdoors but don’t want to sacrifice any holiday luxuries, then Cornwall’s glamping sites are the secret to a stunning, away-from-it-all staycation. These tucked away places make the most of their surroundings, without compromising on comfort. Whether it’s a yurt, shepherd’s hut or wooden cabin there is something to suit all tastes. We take a look at just a few hidden gems that we know you’ll love… Hidden amongst the trees you’ll find Woodpecker, a shepherd’s hut for two on the beautiful 40-acre Dinham Estate near Rock, overlooking the Camel Estuary. The location is the ultimate in rural tranquility, surrounded by woodland and fields, but is close enough to civilisation for anyone staying here to be able get out and about and discover all the north Cornwall coast has to offer. Woodpecker is perfect for a romantic getaway, with a deck on which you can eat al fresco after cooking your supper on the fire-pit barbeque. Lazy days can be spent reading and napping, reconnecting with nature, before ending it all with a soak in the wooden hot tub, soaking up those estuary views as the sun sets.

After dark, head inside where there’s a woodburner that you can cosy up with, before sinking into bed for a wonderful fresh air-induced sleep. Coastal colours combine with modern facilities, including a kitchen and en-suite shower room. And if you would like to share the experience with friends, Woodpecker’s sister hut, Curlew, is also located on the estate. Both are postcard-pretty and each is cleverly sited so that they have their own space and privacy. Wildwood Hideaway is also on Cornwall’s north coast, and is the very stuff woodland dreams are made of. Its stunning log-clad structure helps it to blend seamlessly with its woodland environment and the site itself looks like a magical clearing. From your private parking space, a winding path takes you on a journey of discovery through the woods, opening out to reveal this beautiful log cabin. Nothing jars here; everything right down to the hammock in the trees sits comfortably in its surroundings. Belying its rugged exterior, when you step inside Wildwood you are transported to a luxury hideaway like no other. Farrow & Ball paint, in soft hues, has been used to create a calming interior that has a woodburner to warm your toes on chilly nights and even a lovely sofa to relax on. Wood abounds, as is fitting to the location, but no modern comfort is left out – with a separate bedroom and a shower room that wouldn’t look out of place in a boutique hotel. And for reconnecting with nature, the location couldn’t be better; it really has the glamping wow-factor.

CORNWALL LIVING

For a more modern take on glamping, Squirrel Nutkin is a timber cabin that combines the sound of birdsong and rustling of the trees with a sleek, timber building that is nestled in the wood. Its shape is modern and minimal but it doesn’t look out of place thanks to its careful siting. Inside you’ll find everything you need, including a woodburner and shower room – home from home comforts in an incredible setting. Light floods into the cabin through huge, floor-to-ceiling windows which make you feel like you’re outside even when you’re in. There’s a deck on which to chill and a hot tub where you can soak away your cares – who knows, you might even encounter a shy roe deer as you enjoy a glass of something cold on the deck. Again, a sister cabin is available in the form of Foxy Loxy, set further up the meadow, but as both are sited on the 30-acre estate of Roe Wood there is plenty of space and privacy for all. Moving from the countryside to the coast, and overlooking Whitsand Bay, Captain Blake’s Retreat has a toes-in-the-water position with uninterrupted sea views out across the bay. Set on Captain Blake's Point (it's named after a 17th century Commander of the Commonwealth who took his last voyage around this stretch of the coast), high above Whitsand Bay, this incredible getaway is ideal for a romantic break, with four-legged friends welcome to come along and keep you company.

This site is for the adventurer; you can’t reach it by car so you’ll need to pack a rucksack and walk the cliff path to reach it. But what an adventure this would be! It’s a heavenly retreat with only the seabirds for company as they circle on the sea breezes. Don’t be put off by its remote location, you’ll find everything you need when you get there to enjoy a wonderful escape. Again, design on this cabin is modern and minimal with grey shutters across the front to shut out any inclement weather, although on a stormy day or night you might not want to shut out the view – it would be fabulous to look out across the ocean as the breakers roll in. This is a large, spacious cabin with a full kitchen area, lounge space and dining table. And with immediate access to the South West Coast Path, and tracks to the beach below, a welcome woodburner waits to warm you up after a day’s walking and exploring. This area of Cornwall is very much undiscovered so, if you are looking to get away from it all, this is the place.

f you’re staying near Helston, you’re well set to discover the best that Cornwall has to offer. Indeed, just a short scoot up the coast, in the market town of Helston, you’ll find the Museum of Cornish Life, offering a fascinating insight into the area’s rich tapestry of history and heritage. The building was originally designed as the town’s market house in 1837, with two separate buildings – one for butter and eggs, the other for the meat market. Today, it retains the original sloping floor, which adds to the authenticity of experience as you wander back in time to the Cornish days of yore. In front of the museum is a cannon, salvaged from the wreck of the frigate HMS Anson, which foundered off Loe Bar in 1807. Around 100 sailors’ lives were lost in the disaster, inspiring Henry Trengrouse to invent the ‘Rocket’ lifesaving apparatus, which can be found inside the museum. Head inside and you’ll immediately find that the museum contains a vast social history collection. Dating from the 18th to the 20th century, the range of objects covers agriculture, local trades and industries, as well as law and order, town history, home life, toys, sporting

equipment, gardening, transport and health and leisure activities. Indeed, the sporting display features the famous Bob Fitzsimmons who, heralding from Helston, made boxing history as the sport’s first three-division world champion. The Victorian Classroom, meanwhile, provides a fascinating (and, indeed, eye opening!) insight for children, to see what life was like for pupils all those years ago. The museum boasts the best costume collections of the south west, also offering a regular programme of temporary exhibitions, meaning that there’s usually something new to be found every time you visit. With a team that firmly believes in learning as a life-long process, if you’re staying in or near Helston and hoping to brush up on your Cornish history, a trip to Helston’s Museum of Cornish Life comes highly recommended.

F

or the Greeks and Romans, ‘dog days’ referred to the period when the dog star Sirius appeared to rise just before the sun, in late July. We now use this term in a more general sense, referring to the heady time between early July and early September, when the hot sultry weather of summer usually occurs in the northern hemisphere. So, with the ‘dog days’ of summer upon us it seemed only fitting to discover how best to enjoy or wonderful county with man’s best friend. But where to begin? Cornwall has so many beautiful places to enjoy with your canine companion, the choices are endless... I decided to enlist the help of some experts to unlock some lesser-known gems as well as revisiting old favourites – and all while keeping you and your dog safe and sound. Hattie Day and her loyal hounds are the brains (and the bark!) behind pawsandtors. com, a website dedicated to ‘helping every dog live a life of adventure’. Hattie is an outdoor dog and lifestyle photographer who works with dog businesses across the UK and Europe, and along with her working cocker spaniels, Woody and Hen, she loves spending time outdoors, be that on cliff walks, long distance hikes, or even paddle boarding. Hattie’s hidden gems have something for everyone to enjoy…

For chasing sunsets: Godrevy Heritage Coast

Mexico Towans boasts endless sand for dogs to enjoy, while you soak in the panoramic views of St. Ives. You may have to scramble through the dunes at high tide, as the beach gets cut off from Gwithian. Head up the coast path in search of seals from the cliffs, just past Godrevy Lighthouse.

é ABOVE

Hattie, Woody and Hen discovering the magical Golitha Falls

For days out with the family: West Pentire

West Pentire is a great introduction to the Cornish coast path. The path is relatively flat, with plenty of beaches to explore. Hire a SUP at Crantock and have a go at paddling up the Gannel. Or head to the cliffs at Polly Joke in early summer to watch the spectacular sea of red poppies blowing in the wind.

For beachcombers: Dollar Cove

A quiet cove shrouded in stories of shipwrecks. The Spanish ship San Salvador sank here in 1669 and her cargo of silver dollar coins continues to wash up on the beach. Continue along the coast path, past Poldhu Cove, where you can grab a coffee or a light lunch at the beach café before heading up the hill to marvel at the Marconi monument.

An enchanting forest: Golitha Falls

Follow the tumbling Fowey river as it winds through Draynes woodland on the southern tip of Bodmin Moor. The path is uneven and rocky, so wear trainers or boots and mind how you go. Look out for deer drinking from the river and woodpeckers chipping away at the ancient oaks.

For a city escape: Idless Woods

A hidden gem on the outskirts of Truro. One of six Forestry England managed sites in Cornwall, boasting well-maintained and relatively flat paths. There’s a café in the free car park too and plenty of picturesque picnic spots throughout the woods.

DID YOU KNOW? Some of the dog restrictions on Cornish beaches were relaxed during lockdown, but many are now being reinstated from the beginning of July. You can find all the latest updates on which beaches are dog-friendly, and when, at cornwall.gov.uk

CORNWALL LIVING

If you have a young family, and find that long walks are tricky, then a visit to one of Cornwall’s dog-friendly attractions is sure to keep everyone happy. The Lost Gardens of Heligan (heligan.com) has now reopened and is ready to welcome you and your dog. There are miles of pathways, woodlands and farmland to explore on the 200-acre site, with new and exciting things to see at every turn. Or why not take a trip to The Cornish Seal Sanctuary (sealsanctuary.sealifetrust.org), where dogs on leads are welcomed with open flippers! As well as being able to watch the seals, penguins and sea lions at play, there are also 42 acres of land and woodland to explore, all set against the stunning backdrop of the Helford river. There is also a plethora of National Trust sites (nationaltrust.org.uk) across Cornwall that have re-opened and are dog-friendly. From the sheltered gardens of Trelissick and Trengwainton, to the rugged beauty of Cape Cornwall and Godrevy and across to the sailing waters off St Anthony Head and Fowey, there is a walk and a view to suit every taste. As with most Cornish attractions postlockdown, visits must be booked in advance, so if you are planning a trip to any of these places, please visit the appropriate websites to reserve your slot. As any dog owner knows, it’s imperative while out and about with your dog that you are able to keep your pooch safe. Luckily, vet Andy Cornelius of kernowvetgroup.com was on-hand to give me some safety advice, especially as we will now be taking our canine companions out in a ‘new normal’. He suggests that the best way to obey social distancing when out with your dog is by avoiding crowded areas and peak times. If you can’t avoid going out when it might be busy, think about exploring areas closer to

home – it can be fun, and there are a myriad of footpaths and bridleways criss-crossing Cornwall just waiting to be discovered. Invest in a good Ordnance Map of your local area and get exploring. During these times, Andy also advises that keeping your dog under control and on a short lead is now more important than ever when around other people and animals. Post-lockdown, your dog may not be as used to seeing others as they were before. And remember, it’s summer now! Your dog can get very hot, very quickly, even on short walks and for short periods in cars. Take a plentiful supply of fresh water with you as the usual toilets and cafés may still not be open to refill. And finally, Andy adds that it’s worth remembering that your dog’s vaccines might have lapsed during lockdown. Make sure the vaccinations are brought up to date, especially if you have a new puppy, and be sure to use effective parasite control. Ticks and lungworm are risks as well as fleas and intestinal worms. With so much stunning coastline to enjoy, taking your dog with you to the beach can be fun for the whole family. However, whilst the RNLI lifeguards are on-hand to look after your water safety, it’s every dog owner’s responsibility to make sure their pup is safe too. The experts at penmellynvet.co.uk were able to give me some great tips on keeping safe on the sand and in the sea. Reiterating Adam’s advice, they warn to be careful on warm and humid days. Dogs can’t sweat, and so their main form of heat loss is by panting, which is not effective when it's humid outside. I was shocked to hear that when it's

humid, even if the temperature's below 25 degrees, a dog can still suffer from heat stroke, so always avoid walking them in the middle of the day. Keep your eyes peeled for palm oil on beaches – a white substance with a smell of petroleum – that if ingested can cause obstruction in the gut and/or cause a pancreatitis. Dogs can also swallow too much sand whilst playing on the beach, which can cause a build-up to occur in the stomach and intestines and act as a blockage or irritant, and drinking water from the sea, scavenging and a change of diet (different dog food/extra treats/human food titbits) can all wreak havoc with your dog's digestion. Dogs love nothing more than having a good sniff around and exploring when out walking, but it’s worth noting that as the days get warmer, Cornwall’s adders are also venturing out to bask in the sunshine. If your dog is bitten by an adder, or becomes suddenly in pain after a walk, seek veterinary advice as soon as possible. Also, running across rocks on the beach is an easy way for your dog to tear a claw. This is a minor but very painful injury when it exposes the quick. Keeping your dog's claws trimmed will reduce the risk of this happening. And finally, Penmellyn Vet Group also suggest keeping even the best-behaved dogs on a lead if you're enjoying a coastal walk near cliffs, having seen far too many injuries and deaths from dogs taking a tumble. So, wherever you choose to explore in Cornwall this summer with your dog, enjoy and stay safe!

I

t’s the early hours of the morning and bleary-eyed we press the print button for the first time on a new magazine, Cornwall Living. Born out of a desire to help local businesses expand and grow, through both advertising and editorial, and to create engaging content for our readers who love Cornwall as much as we do. I’m not sure that any of us knew what to expect on our journey, but as someone who has been involved from the very first issue I couldn’t be prouder of the magazine it has become today. And so, in tribute to eight years of creative content in print and online, we hear from those who supported us from the start. I first met Jonathan Cunliffe when I was interviewing him for a comment piece for one of our early issues. He was working for another company at the time, but has since started his own successful estate agency (jonathancunliffe.co.uk) and continues to be an advocate for the magazine. Self-confessed as having lived in Cornwall a very long time, Jonathan is inspired by Cornwall’s coast and history. His treasured times have all involved the water, as he spends his free time either on it or in! When asked for his favourite place to be, a couple of secret beaches were not going to be divulged but he does recommend the New Yard Restaurant, Trelowarren and La Cave, Falmouth as his favourite eateries. I’m intrigued as to Jonathan’s view of why Cornwall is such a unique place to live and work: “Because people choose to live here, rather than live here because they work here. Also, because water sports is the common denominator. Everyone either surfs, sails, rows, dives, paddleboards or swims, creating an ocean community.”

And as to his association with the magazine: “The team behind Cornwall Living has a proven track record at distribution, which means their publications get in front of the right people, rather than gathering dust on a newsstand. It has been a pleasure to work closely with them since they created this vibrant magazine.” My association with George EdwardCollins began while creating a brochure for his company Cornish Traditional Cottages (corncott.com). Back in the days when you could meet over a coffee and a cheek kiss was the adopted continental etiquette for greeting, I remember commenting on the softness of his beard! A classic Hannahspanner moment, but George, always the gentleman, was kindly non-plussed by my random comment and we have successfully worked together ever since.

George has lived in Cornwall for 38 years and worked here for the last 11. “I get inspired by the diversity of the Cornish landscape as I love the outdoors and feel very privileged to have this on my doorstep. When I am fit and well I love surfing, cycling and walking mostly with the family and I love the open spaces on Bodmin Moor. It’s the peace you can get when having an early surf or cycle ride.” Ever the romantic, George proposed to his wife whilst picnicking on Hawkes Tor, his unforgettable Cornish memory: “We have it all here, coast, country, history and diversity, which makes it such a brilliant place to live and work. We are proud to have supported Cornwall Living since it came into publication. I have found their audience to be engaged with the magazines, and this has served us well in getting our business in front of the right type of customer. I have always found the team to be helpful and professional throughout our relationship and I look forward to working with Cornwall Living for many years to come.” Michael Spiers Jewellers (michaelspiers. co.uk) is a Cornish retail icon, crafting and selling fine jewellery and watches for over 60 years. Michael’s son Adam met our founder, Andy, when Cornwall Living was just an idea: “We were drawn in by his passion for life in Cornwall and his vision of something different for the county.” Adam has lived and worked in the south west for most of his life – a Cornishman born and bred. For him it is the diversity of landscape, beaches, towns, villages, people and food that inspire him daily.

CORNWALL LIVING

A common theme amongst our commentators, Adam also loves the beach and the water: “As a child, I could be found running around Looe barefoot, completely feral until the age of 10!” Slightly more restrained these days, he would normally be found surfing at Watergate Bay, but sadly a knee injury in March put paid to this. But it’s not all bad as Adam now has more time to spend sampling the amazing local food and wine! “For me it has to be lunch at Mannings and dinner The Alverton, both in Truro. I never need an excuse to visit our Truro store! I feel blessed that my father started the business in Looe during the late 1950’s. He was drawn down by the amazing lifestyle, but more importantly the people.” No retrospective would be complete without talking to Tamsin Thomas, Head of PR and Communications at Cornwall Hospice Care (cornwallhospicecare.co.uk). Her smiling face has brought cheer to our offices on every visit and her passion for Cornwall and the charity for which she works is truly inspiring. Tamsin grew up in the tiny village of Polruan opposite Fowey: “I now realise it was an idyllic childhood. My most treasured memories both as a child and with my own children, are of being in and around the Isles of Scilly. We spent many holidays on St Agnes when I was little and with my children, we sailed there every year, in fact we still do. At 21 I joined the BBC and set out to conquer the world, but my love of Cornwall was too strong and I’ve been based here throughout my career in broadcasting and then charity communications. I now live in Fowey with a view of my original home village!”

I spend my spare time sailing, walking the dogs, supporting my daughter with her horse riding activities and meeting friends in special places like secret beaches or the not so secret Duchy Nursery at Lostwithiel! I think my favourite place in Cornwall has got to be home in Fowey, but I have to say that when I was working for the RNLI I developed a love for every Cornish place that had a lifeboat!” For Tamsin it’s all about striking a good work life balance: “Here I can be at work and twenty minutes later I can be walking on the beach, breathing in the fresh salty air and clearing my head. For me there’s a pride in working for a charity that serves Cornwall and its people. I also believe people underestimate how forward-thinking Cornwall is in terms of supporting business, providing technology and encouraging remote working. “Cornwall Hospice Care has enjoyed a very successful relationship with Cornwall Living. It’s provided us with a professional platform from which we can share our story, the ways in which people can get involved and the difference our supporters make. Caring for terminally ill patients and their families calls for teamwork, but so too does our determination to ensure everyone understands who we are and why we are here.” As editor of Cornwall Living it has been a pleasure to meet and interview so many wonderful people over the last 100 issues. Cornwall is everything to me – my family, my home, my friends and my place of work. All connected by this beautiful county. We have lived through some strange times these past six months, and it has taught me to see Cornwall anew. From the resilience of its people to newly discovered places, from a new way of working to returning to old values. I believe we have emerged bolder and stronger and I look forward to the next 100 issues!

A look at just a few of the top Cornish kitchens and chefs across the county.

ornwall’s foodie scene has never been more eclectic and vibrant. At a time where many of our normal pleasures have been curtailed, eating delicious food, shared with friends and family, has come to the fore. The Duchy’s gourmet

champions are leading the way when it comes to producing exceptional food in incredible locations. From household names to new chefs on the block, each has their own unique take on how to best use the incredible larder that Cornwall has to offer.

Nathan Outlaw (outlaws.co.uk) is no stranger to a Michelin star himself, and has become known in foodie circles as ‘the king of fish’. He says that time spent working under the tutelage of Padstow’s grand master of fish, Rick Stein, was the most significant influence on his career. He went on to open his own restaurant at the tender age of 24, combining his passion for Cornwall and working with fish and seafood. His flagship Michelin-starred kitchen, Restaurant Nathan Outlaw closed earlier this year, reopening in July as Outlaw’s New Road. Outlaw wanted to make a conscious change to a traditional a la carte offering and one that had a more inclusive dining experience. The Outlaw family of restaurants also includes the aptly named Fish Kitchen which offers small seafood plates, cooked to order.

ê INSET Seasonality is key at The Mariners in Rock

Michelin-starred chef, Paul Ainsworth (paul-ainsworth.co.uk) cut his culinary teeth in some of London’s top restaurants, working under the expert tutelage of the UK’s finest chefs. Alongside his flagship restaurant Paul Ainsworth at No 6 and the more relaxed dining experience at Caffé Rojano, both in Padstow, Paul has recently taken over The Mariners public house in Rock. All focus on championing the best of local produce and creating dishes with seasonal ingredients. It was Paul’s move to Cornwall that taught him about seasonality, whether that be Cornwall’s freshest seafood, its lush larder of vegetables, or meat from local herds.

Talking of Padstow’s grand master, no round-up of Cornish chefs would be complete without Rick Stein (rickstein. com). His approach to seafood cooking has influenced much and many within Cornwall’s culinary circle. The Seafood Restaurant opened its dining room 45 years ago and remains the flagship restaurant in the group. Forays into French bistro dining at St Petroc’s, café culture at Rick Stein’s Café, pub fayre at The Cornish Arms and casual restaurants with takeaways have kept the Rick Stein stable current and vibrant. The Stein family passion for fresh fish remains as true today as it was in 1975.

The elegant menu at Porthminster Beach Café (porthminstercafe. co.uk) draws on Mediterranean and Asian influences and dishes are enhanced by produce grown in the restaurant’s own coastal kitchen garden, as well as ingredients foraged from the clifftops. Porthminster Kitchen (porthminster.kitchen) has a more laid back vibe but retains the collection’s ethos of combining global flavours with local produce, while the hidden gem that is Porthgwidden Café offers an at-ease, cosmopolitan, beachside dining experience that is family friendly inside and out, and dog-friendly on the covered terrace.

New to the Duchy’s foodie scene, but no stranger to the south west, Michael Caines (michaelcaines.com) opened his first Cornish restaurant, The Cove earlier this year. Overlooking Maenporth Beach, the menu here is classic Caines, with a relaxed, informal approach. Breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner can all be enjoyed with an emphasis on locally caught, locally sourced ingredients. The same can be said about his brand-new venture in Porthleven, The Harbourside Refuge. With accolades aplenty across Cornwall’s chef community, it was Ben Tunnicliffe (tolcarneinn.co.uk) who was among the first to be awarded a Michelin star in the county, held at The Abbey in Penzance at the turn of the millennium. Tunnicliffe chose to forgo his fine dining heritage and today is widely known and loved for an unpretentious combination of fresh fish, real ales and convivial atmosphere at his pub, The Tolcarne Inn in Newlyn. Along with head chef Matt Smith, the two have also recently taken over the old coaching inn, The Packet at Rosudgeon (thepacketinn.co.uk). Fish, as you would expect, features strongly

on the menu, alongside meaty treats, and the feasting format is a selection of small plates, designed so you can sample a variety of dishes. Outdoor dining is de rigeur across Cornwall. It’s always been the case that we’ve gravitated to al fresco eating, drawn by the combination of a mild climate and views that complement the experience of an informal meal. Simon Stallard and Jemma Glass (hiddenhut.co.uk) run The Hidden Hut at the back of Porthcurnick beach on the Roseland, where they have transformed what was once a ‘snack shack’ into a foodie destination that has received national acclaim. The food is all about freshness in spring and summer, comfort in autumn and winter, and flavour all year round. Seating is all outdoors so you need to be prepared for whatever the weather might throw at you, but it’s certainly worth braving the elements for. In a county that boasts so many exciting places to eat it’s hard to be definitive. These are just a few of the ‘culinary captains’ that make Cornwall a true foodie destination. And the best bit is, you can embark on your own culinary adventure. Wherever this may take you, you’ll find exceptional chefs and incredible places to eat at every turn and with such a bountiful larder on the doorstep, kitchens across Cornwall are pushing food to new heights. At a time when the hospitality trade has been hard-hit by recent events, we are thankful to the Cornish restaurants and their chefs who have worked so hard to keep Cornwall safely on the foodie map.

CORNWALL LIVING

Christmas is a wonderful time of year but for some whose loved ones have passed away, it can be overshadowed by a sense of loss.

C

ornwall Hospice Care’s annual ‘Light Up A Life’ event is about remembering those who have died, celebrating their lives and taking time to reflect on happy memories. This year the charity has had to change its plans as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and the Light Up A Life event will be held virtually. Filmed at Truro Cathedral, this magnificent building will be lit up with candles representing all the lives being remembered across Cornwall. “It’s an opportunity to join together virtually to grieve and to celebrate the lives of our lost loved ones,” says fundraiser, Oli Hoare. “There’ll be readings, messages of support, songs and dedications to those who have passed away.” The virtual event will be broadcast in early December and people can make their dedications in remembrance of their loved ones throughout November. “There’s a special page on our website where you can tell us about the person or people you want to remember and make a donation in their honour,” continues Oli. “All the money we

raise this year will be going to Terry’s Bed Appeal, which aims to raise £250,000 to keep a bed at each of our two hospices open for the next six months while we cope with the restrictions the pandemic has placed on us.” Terry was cared for at Mount Edgcumbe Hospice in St Austell during lockdown and during this time he talked about what had happened to him and what being cared for at the hospice meant to him. When he knew the very bed he was in was at risk of closing he wanted to help and wrote a letter in which he said: “When I needed it, when I was feeling frightened and disturbed, this beautiful place had a bed for me and it felt like a gift. I’d be devastated if my bed closed.” Sadly, Terry died, but his legacy is an appeal that will help Cornwall Hospice Care to continue offering 24/7 support to terminally ill patients and their families.

THE VALUE OF TIME Cornwall Hospice Care reflects on the importance of having time to get to know patients and their families.

Ward Sisters Lou and Sally êî

BELOW At Cornwall Hospice Care, everybody plays a vital role

“Everyone plays a vital part in getting it right for our patients,” Sally continues. “Our volunteers often get chatting with patients and their families when serving meals or delivering flowers. The chefs sit with patients and try to find ways of enticing them to eat. The housekeepers are often in patients’ rooms for longer periods of time and they too get in to conversation. Between us all we build up a picture so we can care for the individual and appreciate the little things that can make their stay very special.” Lou Ranford says the individualised approach also helps break down the myths about hospice care: “With time and our team approach we can help change people’s minds about hospices, showing them they’re open, airy, happy places. Once here we see people relax, feel at ease and comfortable and there’s nothing better than that feeling of having successfully addressed someone’s concerns.”

ime was the theme for Cornwall Hospice Care when the Cornish charity marked national Hospice Care Week. Under the title of ‘We have the time to…’, the charity’s two Ward Sisters reflected on having time to get to know their patients and their families. Lou Ranford is the Ward Sister at St Julia’s Hospice in Hayle: “It’s about having time to spend with the patients so we can really get to know them. We look at how we manage a patient’s symptoms and how we can support their family, so we can help them achieve their end goal, whether that be going home or having quality time in the hospice.” Sally Davies, Ward Sister at Mount Edgcumbe Hospice in St Austell, adds: “A relative once said to me that they believe impressions are made within the first ten minutes of meeting people and arriving at a new place. It means you’ve got a very short time to make a good impression. It’s vital that we put the patient first so they know they’re important and that we’ve got as much time as they need. It’s about recognising when someone needs help to settle, finding them a peace. It’s also about giving the family the time to hand the care over to us, so they can return to being a husband, wife, parent, child.”

Everyone plays a vital part in getting it right for our patients. SALLY DAVIES
