Christmas is fast approaching and, here at Kids Love HQ, we’re busy putting up the tree, fishing around in the back storeroom to find the box of decorations and generally enjoying some yuletide cheer! We love this time of year; the season when families of all generations gather round to spend some much needed quality time together. And what better place to enjoy it than right here in Cornwall? Christmas for young families typically brings a new shipment of toys. So we thought we’d shake things up a little this year with our alternative Christmas gift guide, focussing on experiences and activities that get us all out and exploring – from family days out, to taking up a new sport. We preview the Fowey Christmas Market; foodie fanatic and mum Nadia Pendleton shares her tasty recipe for Salame al Cioccolato, a delicious and chocolatey festive treat to create with the kids; and our What’s On guide keeps you up-to-date with all the big events over Christmas and beyond. Merry Christmas!

Santa does the rounds across Cornwall Christmas isn’t the same without a visit to Santa’s Grotto. Of course, with his magical superpowers, Santa gets around a bit and there are loads of places across Cornwall to visit the big man himself this year, as you’ll discover over the following pages. And he won’t be relying purely on his traditional sleigh to make his way around the Duchy. Santa will park the reindeer to arrive at the Fowey Christmas Market by boat (see page 7 for more information). For another unique experience, Santa will board the train on the Bodmin & Wenford Railway on selected dates throughout December (see below). For a truly spectacular and memorable setting, you can never go wrong with the Eden Project (look right). But that’s not all. Amongst other stop-offs, Father Christmas will be making appearances at the Lost Gardens of Heligan and Trebah Garden. Finally, go Scandinavian and enjoy a ‘Nordic Noel’ at National Maritime Museum Cornwall in Falmouth, meeting ‘Old Man Winter’, the Norse version of Father Christmas (see the What’s On pages for all the details).

Carols at the Cathedral The best part about Christmas is seeing the delight on children’s faces as they open presents, sing carols or pull crackers. At Truro Cathedral there is also a special moment at Christmas when those delightful expressions can be seen as the children bring their pets to the annual Carol Service. It has been running for over 50 years now and always attracts a large congregation; last year was close to 600. There are the usual cats, dogs, rabbits and guinea pigs but some of the more unusual pets in the past have included llamas, snakes, parrots and even a stick insect! All are welcome as we share the Christmas spirit. The Dean of Truro, The Very Rev’d Roger Bush, says: “This is a wonderful service for all to take part in. I have been involved with it for more than ten years and each year I’m always surprised by the pets and their owners, it’s all great fun.” Truro Cathedral’s Children and Pets Carol Service is on Sunday 27th December at 2pm – no pet too big, no child too small!

Santa by Steam on the Bodmin and Wenford Railway Once again the Festive Season will soon be upon us, and the Bodmin and Wenford Railway is already preparing for a busy Christmas period with its ever popular Santa By Steam specials. This year it will be running for an unprecedented ten days, with four trains on each day. This is a real family occasion in the traditional way with something for all age groups. Meet Santa in his onboard grotto, relax and enjoy Christmas hospitality, and the nostalgia of vintage steam. Trains will operate on Saturdays and Sundays: 5th, 6th, 12th, 13th, 19th, 20th December, and Monday 21st to Thursday 24th December, with departures from Bodmin General at 10am, 11.45am, 13.45pm and 15.30pm. The cost is £13.25 per person, including a present for each child. Pre-booking is essential, and to avoid disappointment early booking is recommended. Steam trains will also run for five days after Christmas, including New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Pinetum Park’s mighty Christmas trees

Spending time behind bars might not sound that tempting, but a trip to Bodmin Jail makes a fantastic and fascinating day out with the family this Christmas. You’ll experience life under lock and key in this historic County jail and read about those offenders who intentionally got locked-up for Christmas! Thankfully, however, as the day draws to a close, you can still return to the comfort of your own beds! Whether your children are learning about the Victorians or acting as detectives to solve crimes in class, this is a truly memorable day that promises to be both exciting and educational at the same time. Children will learn about past crimes that have been committed and why people were locked up, with direct links to The National and Inspire Curriculums, this may just be the spark they need to write an amazing story for their class. With captivating fresh exhibits, including the UK’s only fullyfunctioning execution pit, it’s not just for the little ones either. Bodmin Jail is guaranteed to inspire, inform and enlighten all in full or part time education; whether learning about design and spatial planning, creative writing or film-making, this is a must-visit venue for all! While there, why not sample some of the great food on offer from the jail’s kitchen – hearty food for all!

For more info, call 01208 76292 or visit www.bodminjail.org

This festive season sees Cornwall’s biggest Christmas trees at Pinetum Park. These living giants are fantastic examples of traditional and exotic Christmas trees; discover varieties from America to Norway. Perhaps most recognisable is the Norway Spruce, Britain’s traditional Christmas tree; you’ll also be wowed by the American Christmas Tree (Abies Grandis) which at over 70ft is tall enough to brush the reindeer’s feet as they fly over Cornwall on Christmas Eve! Find the beautiful purple Evergreen, Cryptomeria Japonica, from Japan which is over 60ft tall; as well as the brilliant Blue Spanish Fir, Abies Pinsapo ‘Glauca’ which is found in the mountains of Mediterranean Spain. Amble from the Pinetum to the Winter Garden. The garden is full of fragrance, colourful flowers and beautiful texture from October through to March, and is the perfect place for a festive walk. Open daily, all year round, visitors can enjoy Pinetum Park throughout Christmas.

The staff of Cornish law firm, Stephens Scown, have published a guide to their favourite places in Cornwall and Devon. The guide is part of Stephens Scown’s ‘Love Where You Live Campaign’, a celebration of what makes this part of the world so special. From the five best beaches, to the five best places for a cream tea (whether jam or cream first) and where to find the best fish and chips, the guide is full of tips from the firm’s own people who live, work – and love being here. Recommendations such as the best walks and best places to take the kids on a rainy day are all revealed in the guide, which can be found in the firm’s reception areas in Exeter, Truro and St Austell, and at upcoming events. Look out for Stephens Scown’s bright orange traditional VW Campervan, across the region. The guide is also available online at www.stephens-scown.co.uk/ uncategorised/love-where-you-live-our-insiders-guide. Stephens Scown is recognised by The Sunday Times’ ‘100 Best companies to work for’, which ranked it 39, so it’s only fitting that employees are at the heart of the campaign. Stephens Scown’s Managing Partner Robert Camp says: “I love the region’s heritage and share an enthusiasm for the way of life in Devon and Cornwall. We want to celebrate this – and share some of our favourite tips. There’s so much to be proud of in this region!”

Festive

FOWEY O

Yuletide fun for all the family at the Fowey Christmas Market.

ver the first weekend in December, the beautiful town of Fowey hosts a weekend of festive entertainment, food and drink; an opportunity to pick up some unique Christmas gifts. This year the Fowey Christmas Market promises longer opening hours, new stalls and more entertainment than ever before. What better way to kick-start Christmas than a trip to this beautiful riverside town on Cornwall’s stunning south coast? You’ll find plenty to do when the town opens with an evening of festive entertainment on Friday 4th, from 5pm to 8.30pm. Santa will arrive by boat at Berril’s Yard at about 6.30pm, continuing through Fowey with the town lantern parade. Prepare for the switching on of the Christmas lights at 6pm. The Town Quay Christmas Market opens from 5.30pm on Friday and continues trading all day from 10am until 5pm Saturday and Sunday. There’ll be an exciting selection of traders

é ABOVE Children gearing up for the lantern parade

in the Town Quay Marquees as well as local crafts in the Webb Street Market and the Town Hall, and a second market place within Fowey Leisure Centre with a regular minibus service between the two. As ever, there’ll be a seasoned mix of exhibitors with an emphasis on exceptional food, with numerous delicacies for you to savour; and as for entertainment, enjoy the festive music supplied by local choirs and musicians, along with the special stilt walkers, who’ll lead visitors from the market and over to the Victorian funfair on Albert Quay. As well as this, Fowey has a fantastic array of unique independent shops, great restaurants and cafes, hotels and guesthouses all in the most beautiful location.

MAGIC MOMENTS Make this Christmas one to remember, with family gifts that keep on giving.

I

t’s hardly a secret that all children love toys, while parents love watching them open their presents on Christmas Day; bounding down the stairs to dive into the mountain of wrapped boxes, piled high and glimmering around the tree, grinning from ear to ear. It’s a lovely, heart-warming thing to witness. But it doesn’t take long before the entire house is filled up with a mass of plastic, flashing, beeping things, tripping you up and vying for attention, everywhere you turn. What was once your understated, beautifully styled retreat swiftly resembles an overprescribed landfill site – you’re going to need a bigger house! Meanwhile, with so many toys at their disposal, the children become bored and indifferent to the army of battery-powered

gizmos that you worked those extra hours in order to buy. Despite receiving every single toy they could ever have wanted, the little bundles of joy still remain dedicated to discovering resourceful new uses for your precious smartphone! There is, however, another way. Why not approach Christmas from a different angle this year? And no, we’re not being killjoys! Taking a bit of inspiration from www.raisingmemories.com, there are plenty of other amazing gifts besides toys (which don’t come in a box or require batteries) that are far less transient. So why not give the family the ultimate gift that they will cherish forever? Memories!

other things aside from traditional toys that they’ll undoubtedly love. How about a craft kit, art supplies, science kit, or something else creative that fuels the imagination? Cornwall is celebrated for its quality of light and clear skies, so a telescope or binoculars would make a wonderful and educational present, so you can all enjoy the night sky. Ok, so maybe there’s nothing wrong with giving a few toys at Christmas. And who are we to deny the joy – the ritual – of opening pressies? But, equally, hopefully we’ve given a few ideas to inspire some fantastic family outings in the New Year. A quick flick through this issue will provide loads of ideas of things to do this Christmas, and beyond – so what are you waiting for? Get out and explore! words by:

Treat the family to an experience out together, whether that entails a visit to an attraction, a theatre show, an activity that all can get involved in, or perhaps lessons in something completely new. You could always create a ‘voucher’ to unwrap on Christmas Day. And it really needn’t cost the earth. Did you know? Buy a ticket to National Maritime Museum Cornwall in Falmouth and it will last a whole year, with fantastic seasonal exhibitions and attractions keeping each visit varied. A National Trust family pass is fantastic value too. Visit the great houses and gardens of Cornwall and the rest of the country, again with many year-round attractions tailored for children. And with much of our coastline managed by the Trust, you’ll get free parking in many beautiful spots, perfect for family days out exploring the coast. English Heritage’s Cornish castles, such as Pendennis and Tintagel, are where memories are made. Then there’s Eden, always an incredible experience, whatever the time of year! But how about surfing lessons, or SUP, kite surfing, horse riding, archery? The list goes on. If you can’t commit to a complete course, simply treat the kids to a taster day and they might just discover a new passion that lasts a whole lifetime! If you really want to give them something physical to open on the big day, there are many

ne of the best bits of Christmas is getting to indulge in some seriously scrumptious food. So we asked our foodie expert, Nadia Pendleton, to conjure up something delicious for us. “My mum and I always used to make this traditional Italian recipe when I was a kid to take to my aunts and uncles as a sweet treat at Christmas”, says Nadia. “You might say it’s the Italian version of Rocky Road, rolled into a sausage shape and dusted in icing sugar it looks like a salami. I’d say it’s simply delicious!”
