Finally May is with us, spring has sprung, and there are hints of summer in the air. Cornwall has a reputation for being a creative hub, whether it’s food, theatre, art, music or trying something a bit different. Festival season has started so we take a peek at The Wyldes festival in north Cornwall (page 78), and Rock Oyster Festival near the Camel Trail (page 14). Watch out for more about Cornish festivals in our July issue. Dan has a look at the culture of pop-ups in our cover feature (page 16). These days pop-ups include everything from spas to theatre, gin bars to bubbly, and, of course, a plethora of exciting food. In Foodie we review Hubbox (page 90), the burger bar that started life as a pop-up; there is definitely a theme going here! And I meet the head chef, Adam Davies, behind the exciting new menu at The First & Last Inn, Sennen (page 88). I catch up with delightful artist, Linda Matthews, to discuss her dream of living and painting in Cornwall (page 106). Annie takes us on a bit of a walk along the coastpath (page 75). The Royal Cornwall Show is a major event and part of life here so we have a preview of some of the highlights (page 61). As usual, there’s lots of news, advice, art, property, holidays and so much more in this month’s issue of Cornwall Living. Pour a glass of something cold and enjoy!

Are you tired of your winter wardrobe? With summer, all of a sudden, just around the corner, it’s time we took a long, hard look at our wardrobes, ousting the old to make way for this season’s fresh, new attire. If you’re wondering where to look for your new summer wear, Porthleven is a great place to start. While only small, the few shops on Fore Street each have something special and unique to offer the discerning seaside shopper, and Essa Collection is the perfect example. Inside, you’ll find beaded sandals – which we’re informed are back in this season – as well as new stock from Nepal, including reversible skirts. You can make the most of spring colours, new linen ranges as well as the locally favoured cashmere ponchos, available in 18 colours! Set to marry this May, owners Vanessa and John have planned to honeymoon in Bali. The exciting part for us is that Vanessa will be on the hunt for new stock during their stay, adding a touch of Indonesia to the already diverse range. For more information call 01326 572236 or visit ForeStreetPorthleven

Feel fresh as a daisy after a visit to the Clearing Spa Spring has sprung all around at the Clearing Spa at The Cornwall Hotel, Spa & Estate. Daffodils have bloomed, the sun is shining and the spa has recently enjoyed a refreshing facelift! Centrally located in St Austell, the Clearing Spa offers tranquillity and rejuvenation within stunning parkland, surrounded by an original Victorian walled garden; just ten minutes from the beach and town centre. This year the spa has taken on a brand new manager, Gemma, who is greatly looking forward to improving your journey and experience as well as introducing new and exciting treatments along the way. The Clearing Spa uses Aromatherapy Associates’ purest, award-winning, natural products to deliver exceptional healing properties through their natural oils and extracts. This year’s unique treatments range from beautifying mini facials to fully reviving Signature Rituals and Cornish Trilogies to transport you to a place of deep relaxation. Why not couple your treatments with one of the spa break overnight packages for the ultimate spring rejuvenation? For more information visit www.thecornwall.com/spabreaks

Make the most of your local pharmacy As our GPs become ever more inundated with patients, we’re asked to visit our pharmacist in order to relieve them of such high demand and of course, we’re happy to oblige. We catch up with the team from Reeds Pharmacy, who tell us that the best use of pharmacists is not just when there’s an emergency – they can help with your regular, everyday care too. For instance, when you start a new medicine, you may qualify for the NHS New Medicine Service. This is a pharmaceutical service designed to support you over the introductory weeks and ensure you get the most from your new prescription.

What’s more, as part of an NHS Medicines Use Review, they’ll talk you through your medicines to ensure that you’re using them in the best way. This is separate from the clinical review that your GP does and can only be done by the pharmacy from which you collect your medicines. If you’ve recently started a new, long-term course of medicine, get in touch with the Reeds Pharmacy team and see what they can do to support you. Cornwall Hospice Care team shortlisted for national medical award A team from Cornish charity Cornwall Hospice Care has been shortlisted as finalists in the national BMJ Palliative and Hospice Team of the Year awards. The finals will be held in London in May recognising and celebrating the inspirational work of healthcare teams across the country. The team designed a project, collaborating with other healthcare providers across Cornwall, to develop consistent symptom management for patients with incurable illnesses. They then trained a thousand people working in a range of care settings. They also taught others to provide the training. This was underpinned by Cornwall Hospice Care’s 24/7 advice line, which supports health care professionals. With such immediate support it means patients who are dying are given the right care at the right time and in the right place. Cornwall Hospice Care’s Medical Director, Dr Debbie Stevens, says: “Being shortlisted for the final of these awards is a huge achievement. The competition is always high and I’m delighted that the work we’ve been doing has attracted such recognition.” Well, it sounds like it is well deserved! How about a photography workshop this spring? Whether you live in Cornwall or enjoy visiting on a regular basis, there is one pastime that allows you to capture the beauty of Cornwall with ease: photography. Of course, while it’s easy to press a button and snap a shot, to create truly incredible photographs takes a bit of time, patience and knowhow. Luckily, Porthleven based photographer Carla Regler offers a range of photography courses to help you hone your craft. For those wanting an introduction into the art then the half-day workshop is ideal. Next is the ‘Photography, Processing, Printing’ workshop, which takes you into Carla’s very own workshop to learn about the printing process. Similarly, getting to grips with Adobe Lightroom is an important practice to learn, ensuring you’ll walk away with the skills to perfect your pictures. For those fancying something a little more memorable you can embark on one of Carla’s extended workshops. From a weekend at the Mullion Cove Hotel to a fabulous trip to Iceland, Italy or Norway, these workshops are an unforgettable experience. For more information visit www.carlaregler.com

Kernow Springs’ pop-up Wild Spa seeks permanent location Kernow Springs has appeared throughout the West Country in all kinds of locations, from manor houses to clifftops and now, the company’s popular Wild Spa is seeking a permanent, year-round home. We speak to Project Manager, Nicola Dean, who explains: “Sometimes your typical spa experience can seem too clinical. Our approach is much simpler. Our Wild Spa is really stripped back, allowing clients to immerse themselves in all the traditional elements of water, earth, fire and air in a blissful outdoor spa experience that’s unlike anything they’ve tried before. “Having achieved success with this ethos, we’re really keen to find a permanent base.” What could be more appealing than Scandinavian wood-fired hot tubs; Finnish wood-fired barrel saunas; hot showers; cold plunge pools; a Bedouin relaxation lounge; furnished changing yurts and bell tent treatment rooms, all sited in a beautiful, Cornish, outdoor location? If you think your business or venue would suit a collaboration with Kernow Springs, be sure to get in touch and to read more about Kernow Springs’ pop-up spas, check out this month’s cover feature! For more information call 07779 374017 or email info@kernowsprings.co.uk

Could your roof room do with a little renovation? Renovation grants are now available for all homes in Cornwall that have room in the roof – and the grants are not means tested! The grants cover some, or all, of the costs for an accredited installer to completely insulate the entire roof room. This means that sloping ceilings and gable walls are covered with brand new skin of insulation-backed plasterboard, which is then finished with a fresh coat of plaster. This almost complete renovation will leave your roof room looking like new while you benefit from a warmer home with lower energy bills. CEO of local energy saving experts Happy Energy says: “These new grants, funded by energy suppliers, provide a perfect opportunity for Cornish households to renovate their roof rooms. The grants of up to £7,500 for homes, regardless of income, are an offer not to be missed! The largest grants are available for homes that are not heated by mains gas.”

In celebration of our industrial heritage, the Royal Cornwall Museum launches its first online exhibition Commemorating the 30th anniversary of South Crofty and Wheal Janes’ closure, this exhibition is the culmination of a two-year project to capture the real-life stories of the Cornish mining industry. Heart-felt, humorous and emotional, these anecdotes give a real insight into the last days of a Cornish tradition that inarguably shaped our landscape. Project participant, Alan Beattie says: “It was a fantastic thing to be a part of this project – it’s part of the history of this wonderful county. None of us are getting any younger, so it's important that exhibitions such as this exist in order to continue that story for future generations.” The exhibition is now live and will run until April 2018, so be sure to log on and see it for yourself. What’s more, the team recently completed the Rhododendron Kurume Azalea Wilson 50 collection, which is now classified as a national plant collection. It also has one of the finest stands of Dicksonia antartica (Soft Tree Ferns) in the Northern Hemisphere. The tearoom serves homemade light lunches, cream teas and cakes and has a delightful range of gifts and plants for sale. Tofothpe s p u p o P From the fringes of our coast to the heart of the high street, pop-up ventures, in many and varied forms, are taking Cornwall by storm.

ith summer just around the corner, now’s the time to consider how to make the most out of Cornwall in the sun, a question that’s relevant to both out-and-about weekenders as well as small, local businesses. There is one solution – a concept that, over last few years, has taken the nation by storm: pop-ups! But what is a pop-up? In basic terms, a pop-up venture is one that can, quite literally, pop up anywhere. In Cornwall, the unique geography means you can find them in the most unusual and astounding locations, from the sands of the north coast to the clifftops of the south and anywhere in between. Interestingly, while popups are by no means a new concept, there’s a common misconception that they’re limited to

foodie stalls and bars. On the contrary, being without the same restrictions as high street stores, commercial pop-ups appear wherever the crowds are and naturally, the more that emerge along our coastline, the more intense the competition becomes. In order to succeed, new ventures need to offer something different, something that sets them apart from the crowd and it’s this, I think, that makes them so exciting! You’ll already have seen some of the converted vans, horse boxes and shipping containers dotted around the coast, but it goes deeper than that: pop-ups are beginning to change the face of the high street itself, particularly where there’s empty shop space in need of filling.

Legal stumbling blocks such as paperwork and unaffordable overheads can put off even the most enthusiastic venture. So, when I spoke with Helen Willett of Coodes Solicitors, Penzance, I was pleased to learn that, by working closely with PUPz and Penzance Business Improvement District, she’d been able to find a solution. “There was a need for a difference to be established between what defines commercial and community pop-ups.” Helen explained how she drafted a new, comparatively shortened document that both satisfies uneasy landlords and makes things easier for tenants, a huge step for Penzance!

Just look at Pop Up Penzance (PUPz). I recently caught up with PUPz co-founders, Maria and Rachel who, being incredibly passionate about what they do, explained how they like to take empty shops and create opportunities for others to utilise the space; improving the appearance of the high street by doing away with boarded doors and windows. “Our aim is to bring footfall into the town centre by creating a variety of happenings and to offer opportunities to others to engage the public on the high street.” Working alongside the local community, they’ve been involved in a number of projects to this effect, including The Pop Up Tate. Launched in collaboration with Tate St Ives and artist Emma Saffy-Wilson, the aim was simple – to put art-making opportunities under the noses of Penzance’s youth by transforming an unused space into a hub of activity and within days, artistic young locals had taken positive ownership of it. Impressively, PUPz also involves itself in commercial ventures, recognising the importance of being able to ‘dip a toe’ before plunging in headfirst. Mousehole Fish, for instance, having initially ran a four-week pop-up trial is still open, four years later! As you might expect, the work that Rachel, Maria and co. do must inevitably encounter obstacles.

Foodie and Theatre Taking pride of place at Carlyon, last year, was Ostraca, Fal Oyster’s pop-up Oyster Box. Built from a shipping container and fitted with a hydraulic decking and full bi-fold doors, this smartly converted-contraption is used primarily as a go-anywhere oyster bar. Impressively, it can also be used as an open lounge, a beach bar, a popup restaurant; even a live music venue, making it a fine example of what makes pop-ups so unique! For details on where you can find Ostraca this summer, visit www.faloyster.co.uk. In the name of enjoying the recent, glorious weather, my partner and I went to meet co-founders of Craftworks Street Kitchen, Mick and Danny as they readied their all-new food truck for service. Having already had huge success with the Craftworks Street Kitchen restaurant in Truro, the pair decided to seize the opportunity to put their winning formula on wheels and, if the brisket beef burritos we tried that afternoon are anything to go by, I’d say they’re definitely onto a winner! Throughout the summer, you’ll find the Craftworks truck in Wadebridge, just up from the Camel Trail next to Bike Smart. It’ll also be attending certain festivals over the warmer months, so be sure to keep an eye on the Facebook page. Indeed, festivals are a great way to enjoy the top of the pop-ups, with

ê BELOW Theatre is all the more dramatic in an authentic, outdoor setting

Pop-up theatre is becoming ever more popular and it’s easy to see why. A high-calibre performance is one thing, but add to it the dramatic setting of a woodland or clifftop and it becomes suspended in half-reality, gaining a sense of authenticity that’s impossible to achieve indoors. I spoke with Annie Ukleja, Managing Director at Miracle Theatre, who told me: “We love the fact that we can turn up in the middle of nowhere and transform a field, garden or clifftop into a wonderful theatre venue. We just pull up in our big pink van, set up the stage, set and sound system and we’re ready to go!” According to Annie, even the changeable Cornish weather doesn’t put them off, explaining that: “Whatever Mother Nature contributes on the night will inevitably lead to a one off combination, meaning no show is ever the same!” A great spot for enjoying the thrills and spills of outdoor theatre is Carlyon beach, near St Austell. Enjoying its own devoted hard-stand area, Carlyon sets the bar when it comes to things that pop-up and throughout the summer, visitors can expect a fantastic programme of events which, in the past, have included pop-up performances from Rogue theatre, the popular Skyscape cinema on the beach as well as fantastic foodie banquets – dinner and a show!

Festivals Cornwall’s festival scene presenting some great opportunities for businesses looking to cater to a crowd seeking new experiences. One such company that’s happy to oblige is Kernow Springs, with its roaming Eco Spa. Company founder, Martin Dean and his family – who love going to festivals – have long-since recognised that revellers, instead of slumming it, are starting to seek a little luxury among the usual festival-frivolities. The spa, which includes plunge pools, hot tubs, saunas – you name it – is a wonderful break from the usual, grubby day-to-day of festival life. It’s also available for hire for weddings, parties and corporate events and, being a ‘roaming’ spa, the team will happily set up in almost any location, be it on the side of a lake or atop a cliff overlooking the sea. To find out more visit www.kernowsprings.co.uk. If you’d like to see the Kernow Springs team in action, head to this year’s summer Masked Ball, a fiercely popular date on the national festival calendar and a hub of popup activity. Kelvin Batt, the man behind the magic explained: “The Masked Ball has grown a great reputation, not only for throwing the best parties but also for doing things locally. I moved down when I was young and there wasn’t much going on here. Events such as the Masked Ball provide a great boost for the local economy!”

There you have it. Whether it’s a commercial venture that’s just testing the water; one that’s aimed at filling unused shop space and increasing footfall in the high street or one that continues to give back to the locals, year after year, pop-ups have so much to offer the Cornish community. And, with food and music festivals lined up throughout the summer, as well as static pop-ups just waiting to be discovered throughout the county’s most stunning locations, there’s plenty to see for anyone getting out and about. Remember, if you just keep an open mind and aren’t afraid to try something new, you’ll be amazed at what you might find.

Best of

both worlds

We take a look at four stunning properties that allow you to remain close to the excitement Cornwall has to offer while still providing a haven of peace and tranquillity.

C

ornwall is a lively county, far removed from the misconception of being just sleepy seaside villages and wild countryside. A range of events and festivals focussed on anything from art and food to sailing and surfing take place around the county on an almost weekly basis. If you are a fan of festivals then these four properties might be just what you’re looking for, as they are within easy reach of some of Cornwall’s most popular events. Ambleside Manor (guide price: £895,000), at Whitecross near Newquay, is a spacious family home with five bedrooms, a bespoke kitchen and a large, triple aspect open-plan living area. There is also a library, an office and a fantastic cinema room, which could also be used as a gym for those wanting something a little different. Renovated in 2011, Ambleside sits within an acre of land and boasts wellmaintained gardens and adjoining farmland with plenty of space for planting raised beds.

Indeed, the setting when paired with this incredible property makes it ideal for some fabulous Cornish living. Ambleside is within easy reach of Newquay, an enduringly popular resort town that boasts a busy calendar of events throughout the year. Get your culture fix at the Newquay Art 8 Festival, get swept away by the beat at several music festivals including Boardmasters and Electric Beach, or find a new appreciation for local produce at the Newquay Fish Festival, which includes cookery demonstrations and stalls lining the 300-year-old harbour. On the south coast, you’ll find the vibrant university and harbour town of Falmouth, which offers a packed schedule of events, popups, festivals and parties. For music fans, there are a Folk and Cyder Fayre, a world-famous Sea Shanty Festival, acts playing on every night of Falmouth Week, and regular open mic nights and gigs. If food is your thing you will love the Oyster Festival, regular farmers’ markets,

pop-up food nights and banquets, all of which show off Cornwall’s varied and impressive foodie scene. Alternatively, the Falmouth Pavilion hosts the annual Beer Festival as well as international comedic and musical acts. Situated across the water from Falmouth in Flushing, Cedarwood (guide price: £1,000,000) was completed in 2015 and is a fantastic example of a modern, architect-designed eco home. The house has four bedrooms and reverse-level accommodation, maximising the views from the Scandi-style living space on the first floor with windows that run the length of the house and open onto a balcony with superb panoramic views. Chy-An-Mor (guide price: £2,750,000) and Two Gates (guide price: £850,000) are both near to Mylor, a village with a busy and popular marina, within easy reach of nearby Falmouth. Chy-An-Mor (The Shore House) is a fourbedroom house in a world-class setting with direct water frontage, a swimming

pool, jaw-dropping views across the Carrick Roads and is surrounded by extensive landscaped gardens and a mooring (by licence). Chy-AnMor is a unique home in a very special and secluded location. Two Gates is a detached four-bedroom family home with extensive grounds, planning consent for an extension, and is only a short walk from the historic Pandora Inn. The house is in a very private setting and overlooks Restronguet Creek and the surrounding countryside. Partially modernised, Two Gates has the potential to be a fantastic family home within easy reach of Falmouth and Truro.

St Mary’s Beautiful, beguiling and like nothing else on the market, St Mary’s is truly a hidden gem, just two miles from Padstow.

S

ituated at the end of its own private drive with no near neighbours, St Mary’s is a truly unique fivebedroomed, riverside house with astounding views, dating back to the early 20th century. Originally built as the family home of John Athelstan Riley, a leading AngloCatholic layman and a benefactor of Little Petherick Church, St Mary’s, after considerable extension, has become a comfortable family home with beautiful views down to the creek. Enjoying 2.3 acres of terraced valley garden, the spot abounds with wildlife, including egrets, herons, kingfisher, owls, sparrow hawks and many more, with plenty of hideaway spots in which to take it all in. Inside, five comfortable bedrooms provide ample accommodation for a family looking to relocate and downstairs, the superb, large lounge with solid oak flooring and its own woodburner enjoys the best of the Cornish light during the summer and, in the winter, it’s a great spot for getting cosy and weathering the Atlantic storms. If you like nothing more than getting out on the water, you can keep your craft in the waterside boathouse during the colder months, keeping it in good shape to launch when the summer rolls around.

What could be more appealing than gently meandering up and down the creek with the rods out, before breaking out the barbeque in the evening to cook your day’s catch? Or, if you’re happier on the bank, why not convert the boathouse into something more serviceable – perhaps a summerhouse? Just two miles from the bustling fishing port of Padstow, you are well set to enjoy all it has to offer, from its great selection of seafood to the walks, views and beaches that keep visitors coming back, time and time again. St Mary’s exudes a magical atmosphere and its combination of river frontage, wooded surroundings and local wildlife makes for the ultimate escape from the realities of the everyday. It’s not often that you find properties like this on the market and it’s even rarer that they stay for long, so be sure to contact the Jackie Stanley team and arrange your viewing, before somebody else gets there first!

ocated in a rural spot of stunning west Cornwall, Furze Croft is three miles south of St Ives and four miles northeast of Penzance, meaning it’s well situated for making the most of this beautiful region. These are homes of the highest quality, but what makes them stand out? Firstly, each Furze Croft property has its own, individual feel. This means that, while they all enjoy same high-end fittings and finishes, they retain their own unique feel. What’s more, each semi-detached property has four bedrooms, offering spacious accommodation to a family that wants to relocate.

Indeed, all the fittings and features of these houses are of the highest specification, from the top quality, bespoke handmade kitchens and white sanitary ware, to the mains pressure hot water system and stunning bathrooms. Solid oak doors provide sturdy entrance points, with oak flooring running throughout, giving these new and modern homes a more traditional, built-to-last feel. In the colder months, underfloor heating keeps things nice and cosy while the solid-block outer walls and double glazing help keep things cost-efficient, no matter how far the temperatures drop.

For anyone who hasn’t experienced what west Cornwall has to offer, there’s so much to see, do and explore and therefore so many reasons to move here. Take St Ives, for instance. This seaside town is one of the most highly sought after locations in England, welcoming countless holidaymakers throughout the year. Why? Its charming cobbled streets are lined with countless boutique shops, trendy cafés, bars, restaurants and galleries. Home to the Tate Gallery and the famous Barbara Hepworth Museum, St Ives is an artists’ paradise. Indeed, the town’s turquoise waters and working fishing harbour have attracted artists since the 19th century, who are drawn to the renowned clarity of light. Then there’s the ancient market town of Penzance, with its notable Georgian and Regency architecture and views towards the iconic St Michael’s Mount. Lying in a sheltered position, Penzance enjoys one of the most moderate climates on the British Isles and nowhere is this more evident than in some of Penwith’s magical gardens. Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens, for instance, with its trail of sculptures, work from world-renowned artists and views across Mount’s Bay, is well worth a visit. Looking across Mount’s Bay, you’ll likely catch sight of the Scillonian ferry making one of its many frequent trips to the Isles of

Scilly. Why not jump aboard and take a trip to the stunning, subtropical archipelago, where you can experience life as an islander? Set in the heart of west Cornwall, Furze Croft is well connected to the rest of the country, too. On top of the recently developed dual carriageway on the A30, you’ll find regular flights to London and Europe from Newquay airport as well as direct trains to London Paddington from Penzance. Developed by west Cornwall developer, Ableway, these properties are the result of impeccable Cornish craftsmanship. Utilising the service of local, Cornish tradesmen, Ableway guarantees the comfort, quality and meticulous attention that you’d expect from a new home, meaning they almost certainly won’t be on the market for long! Most of these 15 homes have sold already, so pick up the phone, contact Millerson St Ives and arrange your viewing, while you still have the chance!

his exceptional modern coastal home enjoys what can only be described as stunning sea and beach views. The mesmerising scenery runs from beach and shore below, across the striking Looe Bay, out to the open sea, up across the spectacular Rame Peninsular and to Rame Head in the distance. Indeed, this fantastic beach lies immediately below the house and boasts a perfect setting for families, with rockpools to explore and a lovely beach café at the ready to provide quality refreshments after a day in the sand. Kingsford is such an understated and pleasant surprise. Arriving at a large gated entrance that provides considerable privacy, it initially gives nothing away of its amazing position or size. However, when walking up to the house the quality and character of the building is immediately noticeable due to the fabulous local slate roof. A large entrance vestibule opens into the impressive and spacious entrance hall. A glimpse of the view then beckons, enticing you into the large kitchen diner, which in turn leads to the spacious sitting room. The views certainly provide a true ‘wow’ moment as you enter. The panoramas are best enjoyed from the balcony of the sitting room, especially with a chilled martini in hand! Having said that, the views from every floor are outstanding – especially from the spacious

master bedroom suite on the ground floor! From the entrance hall, stairs lead up to a mezzanine landing providing access to two double bedrooms and a bathroom. The staircase also descends from the ground floor to two lower floors. The first of which comprises of two large bedrooms, a bathroom and the large games room. The bottom floor is arranged as a selfcontained annexe with a bedroom, a large living area and conservatory with kitchen. The gardens are a true oasis of peace with a broad sun terrace, patio area and a private courtyard to the rear. Is there a better way to enjoy the Cornish sun than lounging in your garden before taking a relaxed stroll down to the beach below? The surrounding area is also a huge draw as it offers fantastic scenery and a good range of shops and restaurants. Indeed, this location has something for everyone, from lazy days on the beach to exciting days of sailing, golf and some fabulous coastal walking.

Explore the reaches of Cornwall in luxury with Cornish chauffeur firm, Duchy Cars.

C

ornwall has a lot to offer those looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Whether your interest is simply lying on the beach and soaking up the Cornish sun, exploring beautiful subtropical gardens or throwing yourself into the wealth of activities from watersports to cycling, it’s sure to be well catered for. The kickback lifestyle of seaside living, on its own, tends to bring visitors back time and time again! In fact, it’s quite possible that the only thing stopping you from visiting this gorgeous county and exploring the reaches of our coasts is the drive. Not only can it take an age to wade your way through the busy motorways of high season; when you arrive, the roads can be frighteningly unfamiliar. Fortunately, the team at Duchy Cars understands all of this and appreciates the difference it makes – being able to get around in comfort. What’s more, with a transfer service that can get you to airports, marinas and stations all over the UK, you can take the

stress out of the worst part of your trip with just one phone call! So, rather than drive all the way, only to find yourself bogged down with the rest of the holiday traffic, why not hop on a quick flight to Newquay airport and let them do the rest? Specialising in business chauffeuring and long distance luxury travel, particularly for those wanting to make the most of a coastal retreat to Cornwall, this impressive, local business has been driving clients to and from their holiday air and seaports since 1995. Having previously employed cars from BMW, Lexus and Audi, when we spoke to owner, Steve, he was delighted to announced the most recent addition to the Duchy Cars fleet – a Tesla Model S, the futuristic looking, electric car from SpaceX entrepreneur, Elon Musk. Being the first business in Cornwall to register a Tesla as a private hire vehicle, this new addition is a massive step towards lowering Duchy Cars’ carbon footprint. Steve explained: “A few taxi companies in Cornwall already use pure electric or hybrid

vehicles. The problem is, many require charging more than once a day and their range, even with a full battery, can be as little as 20 miles. This, of course, is not what you want when you’re looking to explore Cornwall, from coast to coast, with only a limited amount of time at your disposal. The Tesla does away with such issues which is why, for many reasons, it is absolutely top of its class!” Whether you’re a couple wanting to get around in luxury and style, or a group looking to get from A to B in as organised a fashion as possible, Duchy Cars will see to it that every mile is made as easy as can be. N-ow, they can do it at as little cost to the environment as possible. What’s more, at the heart of the

professional chauffeur service lies an ethos of discretion and courtesy, with plenty of combined experience working with a variety of clients, from senior managers and directors to VIPs and celebrities! So, if you want to avoid the stress of being behind the wheel in Cornwall but don’t want to compromise on comfort, style and punctuality, give the Duchy Cars team a call!

t s a l t i Make We speak to the Julian Foye team and find out how to keep our furniture looking like new. words by:

Dan Warden

I

f you keep up with our home and interiors features, you’ll have probably noticed the beautiful furnishings from Julian Foye in some of our recent issues. What we love about the team at Julian Foye is their passion and attention to care with all their furnishings. I, myself, have a few questions about how to best look after my own furniture. Am I right in saying that dust only clings to harder furnishings like tables and cabinets? “Upholstered furniture gets just as dusty as your cabinets – you just don’t see it. It’s important that you brush or vacuum weekly to remove it and avoid the colours fading. We also suggest plumping the cushions at the end of each day, particularly if they’re feather or fibre filled, as this will extend the life of the filling and avoid permanent creasing.”

Not to be missed

Staingard Stain Resist Treatment is free if you spend £500 or more on your new furniture from Julian Foye before the end of May.

What else can I do extend the lifetime of my furniture? “General wear and tear is expected, however you can considerably prolong the lifetime of your furnishings by discouraging pets and lively children from climbing over them. We also recommend using protective arm

caps where possible – preferably those made from furniture fabric – as this is the area most prone to wear. We always say to our customers that sitting on the arms of chairs and sofas is a big no-no, as is using a vacuum on delicate feather down!”

ë TOP Although you may not see it, your sofa gets dustier than you think, so be sure to brush or vacuum

What can I do to protect my new sofa from soiling? “This is a question we get asked a lot, particularly by parents who want to protect their lovely new chairs and sofas against possible accidents and we’ve come across a number of solutions. By far our favourite is Staingard Stain Resist Treatment, which we recommend ordering at the same time as your sofa. If applied to your new upholstery before delivery, it will help in the long term to protect against spills and resist gradual spoiling. The best part is that, compared to your investment, the cost is small and even includes a five-year guarantee.”

We thought it time to have a chat with Stuart from Lux Windows and Doors to discover the secret to such an amazing reputation.

S

tuart shares his experiences and tips to make your home look truly beautiful, as well as some top trends to look out for.

Is there a recent project you are particularly proud of? é MAIN IMAGE Bi-fold doors add style, light and easy access ì TOP RIGHT Aluminium windows and doors add style and strength to your home

“There was a new build in Devoran where we supplied and installed alu-clad timber windows and doors throughout the property, the slim profile of the product used ensured that the design of the property was sleek and stylish while still maintaining the thermal efficiency that was vital to the client.”

What would you say is the most popular product at the moment with spring on the doorstep? “Our range of bi-folding and lift and slide doors has become an invaluable part of our business as clients want to transform rooms that combine inside and outside living. From a client’s perspective, this is a relatively hassle-free option with minimal disruption that transforms an old room into one that offers a fun living space.”

enquiry is made straight through to installation and product guarantees. Plus, since we are based in Cornwall, having clients recommend us to their friends and family is essential!”

What should people be keeping an eye out for? “Through our success, we now have a showroom based in Devoran that enables clients to come and take a look at the products and decide on finishing touches such as handles and RAL colours. We have had a great response to our showroom from clients as it helps gives a presence to the business and to demonstrate our standard of customer care, which we feel is invaluable.”

What does the future hold for Lux Windows and Doors? “So far we have been delighted with the growth of our business and the response that we have had from our clients. For the future we envisage our business continuing to be customer-focused by supplying the highest quality composite windows and doors that are contemporary and stylish.”

What do you think makes your business so dependable?

Boundless style We take a tour of three fabulous barn conversions, designed and styled by Iroka.

ì TOP The impressive interior of Callywith Barn è RIGHT The Ethnicraft coffee table from Iroka is an ideal centrepiece for any room

T

ucked away amidst an idyllic woodland setting is perhaps the last place I expect to come across innovative interior design, yet here we are with three classic barn exteriors hiding exceptional style within. Indeed, it is for this reason that I like to keep my ear to the ground when Iroka have undertaken the design of a property, as there is something about the meticulous execution of interior design that is eternally satisfying to see. This particular design brief was to transform the three 19th-century barns, which stood as empty shells, into three stunning selfcontained holiday retreats by focussing strongly on the internal remodelling and architectural and spacial design aspects. This was achieved with aplomb, each barn providing its own individual style, standing as a haven of relaxing elegance, perfect for a sleek woodland retreat. Through careful planning and the creation of bespoke joinery items designed by Iroka and built by a team of highly skilled craftsmen, the barns were brought to life with spacious, open-plan living throughout. In Mill Barn, a feature wall has been created to include a modern wood burner as the focal point with surrounding wood storage, which while practical also creates a striking display. Indeed, the overall look and feel gives subtle

connotations to the surrounding abundance of nature, creating a soft and warm, Nordicstyled haven. Callywith Barn features a memorable vaulted ceiling, showcasing the characterful beams above and giving a light and bright feel while the appropriately named The Snug barn boasts a contemporary yet intimate atmosphere that is perfect for a romantic getaway. Indeed, every barn highlights this fantastic blend of a classic cottage backdrop with a smart and effortlessly stylish design. The Porto wood-lined kitchen, which can be found in each barn, boasts a strong yet minimalist design with Unistone worktops to add the finishing touch to these fantastic kitchens. Made with 90 percent natural quartz, they add a beautiful and lasting addition and create a brilliant contrast to the lovely slate floors. Surrounded by nature and featuring simple yet effective style within, these barns provide a true escape from everyday life and act as a superb showcase of the talents the team at Iroka have to offer.

ne of the easiest and most effective ways to transform any room is to update your soft furnishings; whether a bright new curtain, a beautiful new cushion for the sofa or a fresh new upholstering of your favourite chair. We recently spoke with local business Merchants and Makers, a fabulous interior fabric showroom in north Cornwall, to find out how you can turn a piece of fabric into a statement piece for your home. The showroom, which is located just six miles from Launceston, boasts an enviable array of fabrics for an endless variety of needs. Indeed, whatever budget you are working from there is bound to be something to catch your eye. From fabrics on a budget to high-end brands such as Harlequin, Osborne and Little, Villa Nova and Romo. However, the versatility doesn’t stop with the fabrics themselves! You can either take the fabrics home to use yourself or you can speak with the team of experienced curtain makers, upholsterers, soft furnishers and interior designers who will work closely with you to create exactly what you are looking for. This team of experienced craftspeople have worked on an incredibly diverse range of projects, from perfecting a beachside living theme to maintaining the traditional style of a country estate. In fact, the projects have been so diverse that they often find themselves creating something completely bespoke to fit the client’s needs. One such example came about when a client wanted a canopy for their half tester bed. The team was delighted to try something new and took great pride in creating a beautifully detailed canopy complete with French passementerie. With the workshop right next door to the showroom, speaking with the team and getting some advice and discussing your plans couldn’t be easier. Whether you have some beautiful but awkward to cover apex windows in need of a curtain, a bedroom in need of some Roman blinds or something completely unexpected, just pop in and have a chat! With a friendly and experienced team, a full measuring and fitting service and truly stunning fabrics to choose from, has there ever been a better time to refresh your home?

Danish style Head to north Cornwall and discover a world of inspiring Danish homewares that are sure to add something unique to any space.

o&Co is a beautiful lifestyle store in north Cornwall that is already making waves among keenly styled customers and fans of interiors with a penchant for clean lines and quality design – and it has only been open for two years! This Scandi-inspired store is located at Hawksfield (a dynamic hotspot for eating, shopping, art and subcultural happenings) on the Atlantic Highway between Padstow and Wadebridge. The creatively-inspired Hawksfield estate has risen Phoenix-like from a previously disused site which has been transformed into a buzzing destination, featuring an artisan food deli, award-winning café, contemporary art gallery, vintage furniture store, florist and yoga studio. Whiling away an afternoon at this inspiring shopping destination is nothing short of delightful. And at the heart of it all sits Jo&Co Home. Founder Joanna Eldridge has brought about a carefully curated edit of luxe homewares and lifestyle products all underpinned with a cosy ‘Hygge’ homeliness. Walking around the spacious showroom-style shop you are tempted to imagine it as your own home – perfectly designed and oozing a simple understated style. With quirky kitchenalia, classic womenswear and artisan jewellery sitting comfortably alongside a heavenly library of beautifully illustrated design tomes,

we could have spent hours just perusing the pretties on offer and revelling in the relaxed Scandi vibe. A sprinkling of local art, feature lighting and big British brands keeps things fresh and considered. Indeed, the store is the only independent family-run boutique in the southwest specialising in Danish interiors whilst simultaneously showcasing north Cornwall’s raw coastal rusticity via its wealth of artists and makers. Joanna has two children with her husband Tom Eldridge and has recently added a collection of designer children’s clothes to complement the already popular range of traditional wooden toys and puzzles. Her vision is to ensure that Jo&Co Home is very much a ‘go to’ lifestyle store with a little something for everyone. Jo says: “The shop is one-of-a-kind. There aren’t many places (certainly none in Cornwall) where you can go to find furniture, womenswear, toys and homewares all under one small and independent boutique’s roof! I am so proud of what we’ve achieved and am so excited for the future.” So are we!

All over Britain there are thousands of conservatories that have been built over the last 30 years. The design and construction of many leaves a lot to be desired. How many times have you been in a conservatory that is freezing cold in winter and stiflingly hot in the summer months. This is why conservatories are deemed to be non-habitable rooms by the planning authorities and building control. Consequently it is mandatory that an external quality door has to be kept installed between the main house and the conservatory. The result – they are very often abandoned and left as a glorified storage rooms. But things have changed, it is now perfectly possible to totally transform these unused, badly designed conservatories into the very latest all year round extension. By removing the existing polycarbonate or glass roof and replacing it with a totally insulated solid roofing system, your previously unusable conservatory is now perfectly useable – all the time. Rodda and Hocking are the South West distributors for the patented Guardian and Supalite roofing systems. The Guardian and Supalite replacement roofs have been tested and approved by all building

More

space, more time

One of life’s great frustrations is the fact that everyday clutters take up time that could otherwise be spent with loved ones. So we’ve taken it upon ourselves to try and find a creative solution!

A

few weekends ago I spent two days of glorious sunshine indoors and sorting through piles of prized possessions in a futile attempt to spring-clean and organise my life. Indeed, nearly every weekend I find myself dedicating an absurd amount of time to sorting through odds and ends: trying to find space for things I can’t bare to get rid of because they hold sentimental value, will be needed when I get a bigger place or will be important for work in the future. While my friends basked in the sun on their favourite beach and enjoyed an ice cream with the family in St Ives, I sat amidst boxes and staring longingly out of the window! Someone mentioned self-storage as a solution, and a little digging unearthed Cornish company M-Store, a colourful and dedicated example that you can have your cake and eat it by storing your personal possessions, office documents and stock overflow with care and

attention to safety. Indeed, after looking at the details I soon realised that my things would have a better life there, as the de-humidifiers would stave off the damp a hundred times better than my home ever could. M-Store boasts a prime location just off of the A30 and offers customers 24/7 access through coded electronic gates and CCTV surveillance so that you can leave feeling at ease with the knowledge that your possessions are safe and secure. So, if you fancy spending a few more hours enjoying the superb lifestyle by the sea that Cornwall provides then have a look at how you can save time at home and in the workplace with M-Store.

Get that

spring feeling With carpets of newly budded flowers seen across Cornwall, is it time we refreshed our homes to match?

W

ith spring here and the promise of longer days spent lounging in the garden with a drink in hand, it’s time we look to our houses for a little TLC. Spring cleaning might be a time-honoured tradition but it is often all too focussed on the interiors of our lovely homes, leaving the outside to continue on untouched. Of course, I understand why we tend to shy away from external updates: it is infinitely easier to just rearrange some furniture and empty the kitchen cupboards than to embark on a fabulous refreshing of a house. I have therefore come up with a few top tips on changes that can be made that will help inject new life into your home and that’ll help make your spring and summer a joy! Drinks on the porch anyone? Before the hot days of summer roll around it can often be chillier than we would like in the evenings. Investing in a conservatory, sunroom or porch not only adds value to your home but also provides a mini oasis in which you can while away an evening chatting with friends or enjoying a good book in comfort and warmth while still enjoying that garden feeling. Bedeck your home Installing some fantastic anti-slip decking gives you the chance to enjoy your garden whatever the weather. Nothing spoils a day more than excitedly preparing a delicious Sunday

breakfast to enjoy on your patio only to go flying because the rain visited the night before! Brand new, old fashion The simple act of updating your windows to a Residence 9 window will mean your house maintains its character with beautiful, traditional, timber-style windows while providing you with all the benefits of a PVC window – they are even accepted in Grade II listed properties (subject to council approval). J’Adoor When is a door not a door? When it’s a fabulous bi-fold, French or patio door! Ok, yes these are still all doors but they are also so much more. They are an accessory to your home and your lifestyle. Imagine waking up and opening your beautiful French doors as the morning light floods in. A little too idyllic? Perhaps, but it’s a lovely feeling all the same! If any of these ideas pique your interest and start you down a path of refreshing the exterior of your home then contact ABL Plastics, a fantastic local company that’s only too happy to help you create your ideal home.

Define your style

We catch up with the team from Cotton Mills, asking for their best style-defining tips to get your interior design project off the ground.

Why not make a spider diagram of your notes and findings? This will make it much easier to keep all of these considerations in one place.

é MAIN If you’re surrounded by sea, let your coastal surroundings define your decor! ì RIGHT Don’t be afraid to have too many ideas – the results are often amazing!

A

s the spring-summer sun starts shining a light on your tired interior, it’s easy to feel underwhelmed. But when it comes to making that all-important change, where do you even begin? Firstly, you need to consider the space itself. What kind of building are you dealing with? Is it a sleek new build, a gnarly cob thatch, a Victorian terrace or a wooden beamed cottage? It’s crucial to be clear on this, according to the Cotton Mills experts, as every property has its own character, even before it has seen any decoration. For instance, taking into consideration the size of each room; which direction it faces and therefore what kind of light it will get can have a huge impact on how you approach its décor. Second on your list should be taking into account the qualities of your home’s surroundings. Are they coastal or country, city or woodland? Imagine you’re surrounded by woodland. Chances are that the materials you use and the colour scheme you adopt will be reflective of your natural surroundings, whether it’s in a complementary or contrasting manner.

Finally, what style suits you? Many find it useful to come up with a title for their chosen scheme. Be it a well-established style like Scandinavian, Art Deco or coastal, or even an expression that’s as unique as you are, you should have your chosen title as a point of reference. Referring back to this before each decision will ensure that the end product lives up to your expectations. As a final note, the Cotton Mills team explains that, once you start gathering them, you’ll probably find yourself with far more ideas than you can possibly work with. Getting the creative juices flowing is what it’s all about and you can always narrow your ideas down later. Just making a start is often the hardest part, so break out the scrapbook, get those samples rolling in and start filling up your notebook – you’ll be amazed what you can achieve once you’ve got the ball rolling!

We take a look at Creusa, a kennel so good we are contemplating going ourselves!

C

ornwall is proud to be a very dogfriendly county, with a fantastic number of dog-friendly beaches for splashing around, incredible countryside for walkies and an impressive array of cafés and pubs that welcome dogs and their well-behaved owners. Of course, sometimes we need to make alternative arrangements. Whether off on a business trip without your best furry friend or you are a visitor staying in a holiday cottage that sadly doesn’t allow dogs, finding a cosy and comforting place for your dog to stay is a top priority. A kennel owner, based in the heart of Cornwall, has worked non-stop to upgrade six kennels into luxury dog retreats. These units provide your dog with the ultimate holiday experience as they include televisions playing programmes aimed at a canine audience, comfortable handcrafted wooden beds and are fully heated to keep your best friend warm and cosy year-round. Of course, food is always the best part of a holiday so your dog could be feasting on gourmet meals, which are available upon request, including salmon with creamed vegetables and basil on a bed of rice! Owner, William Bruce, says: “As a pet owner I am aware how stressful it can be when families have no choice but to use kennels. Our aim at Creusa is to minimise that stress by ensuring animals

feel at home. My dogs love wildlife channels so we show Attenborough films in the suites.” The new units have safety glass windows and doors creating a peaceful retreat that is ideal for nervous dogs. In fact, you can even request a calming pheromone diffuser, which emits pheromonene to help reduce stress in dogs that are exposed to challenging situations. For those holidaymakers who are not allowed dogs in their accommodation, the kennels are perfect for a doggie bed and breakfast as you can come and collect them in the morning and then return them after a day of exploring Cornwall. William adds that they are even happy to bathe any muddy and sandy dogs – ideal! Doggy day-care is also available, which is perfect for locals going to work or holidaymakers visiting attractions that aren’t suitable for dogs. Indeed, with state-of-the-art security for added peace of mind, this kennel sounds like the perfect solution for any canine needs. I mean, honestly, gourmet food while watching David Attenborough – sign me up!

Cornwall Living readers can get a fantastic one night’s free accommodation for their dog, worth £16, which can be used on its own or as part of a longer stay. Just quote Cornwall Living when booking!

The Abbey, Lelant

Timeless and historic, The Abbey is a Grade II listed property set in the heart of Lelant, near St Ives. In fact, the exact date that The Abbey was built is unknown, but the first recorded date is 1581 and the likelihood is that it was built between 1300 and 1400AD! Grand features enjoyed by this stunning property include the pillar in the sitting room, several granite-arched doorways, the spectacular spiral granite stairs and the remnants of grand mullion windows facing south, towards the sun. It combines history with an authentic rural atmosphere, particularly in the kitchen where the granite-arched range offers farmhouse-style cooking, perfect for those with a touch of foodie flare! Outside, the large lawned garden lends itself beautifully to a spot of al fresco dining and, should the temperature drop, the comfortable, open-beamed ceiling sitting room has its own log burner, as well as cushy furnishings, making it ideal for a cosy night spent weathering the petulant storms of the Atlantic. With many of its granite features believed to have been salvaged from

old, local churches and an interior that beautifully bridges the contemporary with the historic, The Abbey makes for a wonderful, rural family retreat that’ll even accommodate the hound! 01736 754242 www.aspects-holidays.co.uk

North Wing, Mount’s Bay

way to the iconic St Michael’s Mount. The coast path is immediately accessible, with Prussia cove around the headland to the left and Perranuthanoe to the right, making it perfect for avid walkers such as myself. Originally built in 1775 as a country house, Acton Castle is now a set of apartments, which provide an impressive yet welcoming place to stay. Sitting in the formal communal garden with a drink in hand, looking out across the beautiful expanse of ocean in front of you enables a true moment of peace, with work and the troubles of life feeling like a world away. Indoors, the open-plan living area, which boasts a lovely relaxed style, offers a comfortable place to unwind after a day of exploring the stunning surrounding coastline. Lovely wooden bookcases break up the living area, which means you can either enjoy a chat with loved ones while you cook or you can tuck yourself away in a corner with that book you never quite get around to reading! Walking through to the fabulous double bedroom, you’re met with an understated design that embodies the ambience of life by the sea, with neutral tones that help aid a restful night’s sleep. While this is a fantastic spot for a romantic getaway the twin bedroom means the apartment is ready and waiting to provide anyone with an unforgettable family holiday. 01326 567838 www.forevercornwall.co.uk

Fun for all

This year’s instalment of the fantastic Royal Cornwall Show is promising to be another three-day extravaganza, with fun for all ages!

O

n the 8th, 9th and 10th June the Royal Cornwall Showground near Wadebridge will play host to a celebration of the very best of Cornish farming, food, drink, shopping, entertainment and fun. It’s an event that really does offer something for everybody across the three days. Indeed, it’s easy to see why 120,000 people attend this fixture in Cornwall’s social calendar! This year is the 224th year of the Royal Cornwall Show. It’s still very much an agricultural show at heart and remains true to its roots and retains its unique Cornish identity. Of course, while the show is at the heart of the Cornish farming and rural community is also attracts show-goers from all backgrounds. It brings town and country together in one place. Visitors are drawn from across Cornwall, the south west and much further afield, including overseas. Such is its enviable reputation as being one of the best agricultural shows. There’s a wealth of things to see and do at the show. Literally thousands of animals of all shapes and sizes will congregate in the pursuit of prizes. It’s a showcase for sumptuous Cornish food and drink and a mecca for shoppers with over 1000 trade stands to choose from. There’s also an outstanding flower show, and a steam and vintage vehicle fair crammed full of exhibits. A bursting programme of entertainment is found across the showground, with headliners in the main ring creating a buzz. Taking to the main ring this year are the Bolddog Motocross Display Team who can do things with motorbikes you wouldn’t believe, while huge eagles and vultures soar above the crowds in a magnificent bird of prey display!

The RAF Falcons will be dropping into the main ring on all three days and the grand parades of prize-winning livestock and horses, showjumping classes and inter-hunt relay, add to the action. And if that isn’t enough to tempt you then there are also live music and dance stages, which host a variety of acts with street theatre and roaming musicians popping up in the busy avenues. There’s never a shortage of fun for any age! If you would like to find out more about this fantastic farming event, or if you would like to buy your tickets, then you can head to the Royal Cornwall Show website.

SHOW/2017

Food for thought Over 1,500 school children enjoyed two interactive days learning about farming and food at the annual Farm and Country Days held at the Royal Country Showground.

T

he pupils, aged between seven and nine years of age, came from 40 schools spread across the length and breadth of Cornwall. Over 300 farmers, growers, food producers and representatives from agricultural and food production related businesses created around 60 hands-on exhibits to bring the story food takes from farm to plate to life. The children came face-to-face with dairy and beef cattle, sheep, pigs and goats. They also discovered how vets care for farm animals, visited a milking parlour to learn about milk production, crimped pasties under the guidance of Warrens Bakery and enjoyed tasting Callestick ice cream. They also discovered what lurks in Cornish hedgerows and explored with Elsa and Rona Amis, who farm on the Lizard, the important role dung plays. Jane Wheeler, year four teacher from Kea Community Primary School says the children thoroughly enjoyed the event, taking a huge amount away from it. “The children were really buzzing with new knowledge and ideas when we got back to school. We would like every child in our school to benefit from this experience.” Kate Cameron, year four teacher from Treverbyn School says: “We had such a

wonderful time today. On the coach journey back to school, the children were either totally buzzing, chattering non-stop about their day or fast asleep! Both are a testament to the brilliantly organised, varied and extremely interesting experience provided.” Jacky Cherry from the Cornwall Food and Farming Group said that whilst the event was great fun for all involved it also presents a gilt-edged opportunity to educate the next generation about how the industry works. “The aim of the Farm and Country Days is to bridge the ever-widening gap in the understanding of the care, attention and sheer effort our farmers and food producers put into creating our food. Hopefully, we’re helping to create better-informed future customers and inspire more to become agriculturalists in the future.” Over the past four years, more than 6,000 pupils have attended the event and it is fully subscribed for 2018 and approaching capacity for 2019, which shows just how popular this event continues to be.

Make a good impression

Impressing visitors to your home from the moment they step out the car has never been easier, thanks to Philip Whear Windows and Conservatories.

W

words by:

Dan Warden

ê BELOW A window looks both ways, so why not match yours to your interior?

hen introducing guests to your home, whether they’re family or friends, you want to make as good a first impression as possible and inviting them through a tattered, weather beaten front door that’s quite clearly seen better days isn’t the most ideal start. Replacing your front door can make a huge difference and the Philip Whear Windows and Conservatories team understands this, realising the importance of how life changing such a change can be. It’s quite possible that your dilapidated door and draughty windows keep you up at night, as you worry yourself with questions like: What’s the best way to go about replacing them? Who

do you approach? How much will it cost? Will the replacements suit your home? What about value for money and quality? What if the salesperson drinks endless cups of tea and never leaves? If this is the case, we urge you panic not! The Philip Whear brand has become synonymous with quality Cornish workmanship, manufacturing and installations, ever since the company began, more than 30 years ago. While the team embraces the challenge of bespoke, complicated orangeries, conservatories and glass balustrades, they also take great pride in fitting good quality windows and doors with the same attention to detail and quality.

So, what can they do for you? While quality fittings and second-to-none service are at the core of the Philip Whear ethos, the team can also match your new purchase with both your interior and exterior, so whether it’s a traditional look you’re going for or a more modern, contemporary one, your needs will be well catered for. This sounds impressive and I couldn’t quite believe it for myself, so I spoke to a recent Philip Whear customer who told me: “Since having the Philip Whear team replace my old front door, every day when I come home from work, I smile as I enter my house! Not only do I love the look of it, I feel warmer and secure when I’m indoors. It’s made such a difference to my daily life!” Impressively, it’s not just improving the aesthetics of your home that the team aims to achieve. For instance, should you decide to sell your property, you’ll of course want the perceived value of your home to be as high as possible. With this in mind, upgrading your exterior can really pay dividends. What’s more,

when potential buyers come to look at your home (and this goes back to that all-important first impression), they’re far more likely to be open to and appreciative of what they find inside, if they’ve been wowed from the out! I’m a firm believer that, while a book shouldn’t be judged by its cover, it never hurts to have one that makes people want to read on! So, if you’re looking to improve the home you return to every day; increase its perceived value or even just replace doors and windows that have seen one too many winters, get in touch with Philip Whear Windows and Conservatories. The old adage ‘you get what you pay for’ has never rung so true.

love Cornwall. I love walking. I love the coast. And yet, there I was, with a shockingly poor knowledge of the Cornish coastline. Like many people, I am terribly biased when it comes to choosing the locations for my walks. West Cornwall was the stretch of coast I grew up with, with Logan Rock, Zennor and spending lazy days on Porthchapel amongst my favourite spots. So when my partner and I decided that we would branch out and explore the rest of Cornwall there was really only one option: start from one end and finish at the other. In an ideal world, we would dedicate the eight weeks it takes to walk the entire South West Coast Path. With this in mind, we decided that we would get out and complete a stretch as and when we could (covering

only the Cornish coast this time round), which makes the goal not only achievable for us but to anyone. When we set about planning our coastal adventure we decided to find a guide that could help us make the most of each outing. While we love the South West Coast Path website, there are plenty of spots along the coast that offer little to no signal. We turned instead to something a little more oldfashioned in the form of a rather fantastic book by Trailblazer. What makes this book such an invaluable companion is the inclusion of hand-drawn maps, tips on local amenities and things to look out for while walking. We refuse to leave without it and, with this handy little book in tow, we took off for Bude and the start of our Cornish journey.

Things to remember • Clothing for any weather é ABOVE Boscastle is a beautiful place to stop off along your journey, with great pubs and cafés in an idyllic setting ê BELOW Even on a cloudy day the views along north Cornwall’s striking coast are breathtaking

Looking back on our walks so far, there is one lesson that stands above the rest: be prepared. While this is admittedly borrowed from the Boy Scouts of America it is no less applicable. We learnt this lesson the hard way after a particularly eventful walk along the north coast. The first issue was that of water, in that we completely forgot to bring some. This became a problem after the first slight incline and continued to be a problem until we reached our destination, where we immediately bought two bottles of water and drank them in complete silence and with impressive speed. The next issue was that of weather. While it was surprisingly warm as we set off, the weather changed at random intervals

throughout the walk. This would have been fine if we hadn’t dumped our jumpers and coats in the van after feeling the siren’s rays of the sun telling us the day would be warm and dry. Of course, good weather is never guaranteed and this should never stop you! Our trip between Crackington Haven and Boscastle was unfortunately under the heavy shroud of thick fog. We had to take the presence of the sea on faith and sound alone. Climbing the highest cliff in the county was a perpetual affair of always having a little further to go with the seemingly unreachable top hidden in mist. But please, don’t be put off by the prospect of poor weather! The days consisting of fog, rain and, yes, occasionally hail, were often the most fondly remembered! Of course, standing on a Cornish cliff, with the sun above and the absurdly blue sea in front is the ultimate feeling of Cornish ecstasy. And as much as you want to reach your destination in good time, pausing to take stock of the scenery and the incredible place in which we live is unavoidable and most definitely encouraged. We have only just begun this amazing journey along the South West Coast Path and I cannot wait to walk the next stretch. Feel inspired? Grab your walking boots and we will see you out on the cliffs!

• Sun cream (especially in the height of summer as the sun is strong even through cloud) • A camera (after all, the views are incomparably beautiful) • Cash (not all idyllic Cornish villages have cash points) • Parking (some places are not designed for large vehicles, as we found out, so make sure you pre-plan accessible parking before setting off) • Check public transport (nothing spoils a walk quicker than missing the only the bus) • Mobile phone

Interesting facts to consider along the way Whilst following the South West Coast Path around the entire coast of Cornwall you will have: • Walked 300.1 miles • Passed through or over 724 stiles and gates • Crossed 117 bridges • Caught four ferries • Gone up or down 15,285 steps • Passed 1,722 Coast Path directional signs

As soon as you walk through the door it is clear that the number one priority is great food and drink. The shelves are full of local produce from chilli jam to gin and biscuits to artisan oils! After the refurbishment, Number Twelve has seen its best year yet. People are drawn to the homemade cakes, soups, quiches, sausage rolls and delicious baguettes that are made before your eyes! Indeed, working with local producers and supporting artisan products remains a key aspect of the Number Twelve ethos, with the team knowing each product’s individual story: especially the spirits and wines. Or, if it’s pizza that gets your taste buds tingling then pop along after 5pm and enjoy an amazing wood-fired pizza: it’s the perfect refuelling after a day on the beach! In the winter months Number Twelve hosts gin, wine and rum tasting evenings where you can meet the producer, listen to their story and ask plenty of questions – sounds ideal! HISTORICALLY GOOD FOOD AT THE TURK’S HEAD INN, PENZANCE Having been shortlisted to the final ten in the Taste of the West Gold awards, the Turk’s Head is Penzance’s oldest pub and, over the years, its proprietors have learned a thing or two about good, seasonal food. Made from scratch, each dish is locally sourced and fresh, cooked to order by Head Chef and 2010 Masterchef semi-finalist, Lee Groves, and his talented team. Seasonal specials range from seabream and fresh crab to homemade burgers and traditional Sunday roasts. In the summer, you can even enjoy a barbeque in the sun in the pub’s beer garden. Having recently launched a new menu, now’s the time to pop in and sample some of the many delights on offer, before washing it all down with a tipple of choice from the well-stocked bar. The team always ensures they have four Cornish ales on draught, while the other options range from beers and wines to prosecco, so whether you’re just taking a load off after a stroll around Penzance’s waterfront or celebrating a special occasion, there’s something to tickle your fancy. GREAT FOODIE FUN WITH LITTLE KITCHEN MAGICIANS Little Kitchen Magicians is a cookery school with a difference – it’s a mobile/pop-up cookery school that predominantly works with children and families. The objective is simple: promote health and wellbeing, develop a life skill and create a better understanding of food and its origins, such as all the fantastic ingredients available here in Cornwall! Lizzie, founder of Little Kitchen Magicians, has a very holistic approach to the workshops, as she discusses all manners of things from the growing process to harvesting to health benefits – all while cooking up delicious dishes from scratch! Working with a variety of establishments and with different themes and topics, Lizzie works hard to impart her culinary wisdom through fun and memorable workshops! The workshops are an incredibly rewarding experience. At the end of a workshop you can hear children exclaiming how they want to be a chef when they grow up while another child beams with pride as they see their cooked dish for the first time. Lizzie is excited to continue inspiring a new generation by providing life skills and showing that cooking can be fun! LITTLE KITCHEN MAGICIANS www.littlekitchenmagicians.com littlekitchenmagicians

Your first visit definitely wont be your last to the recently revamped First & Last Inn.

ince the 17th century, the First & Last Inn has provided a warm welcome to locals, visitors and, according to local folklore, quite a few smugglers. Sadly the smugglers are now long-gone, but the evocative interior and renowned hospitality remain. I caught up with the Inn’s General Manager, Jon Egerton, and Head Chef, Adam Davies, to find out more about the recent major investment used, over the winter, to completely refurbish the kitchen and install a new pizza oven, as well as new branding and a new website. Jon tells me: “Customers will notice the new menu with the emphasis firmly on locally sourced produce. We’re passionate about Cornish produce and we’ve tried to source as much of it as we can from very local suppliers. Our burgers are handmade using meats from McFadden’s Butchers, while our vegetables are mostly from Bosavern Community Farm – both just five miles away from the Inn. Much of our fresh fish is landed in Newlyn, eight miles away, and sourced from Stevenson, The Cornish Crab Company and Matthew Stevens, while our pork comes from the award-winning Primrose Herd in Truro.” Adam grins and

adds: “Just about the only thing on the menu that’s not Cornish is the pizza dough; its handmade in Italy and then stretched and stonebaked in-house by me and the team.” They even offer a takeaway pizza service where you can order over the phone and collect your pizza from the Inn. The pub is full of traditional features and has a wonderful atmosphere, with low beamed ceilings, original stone walls and wonderful little nooks and crannies to relax in and enjoy the delicious food with a glass or two of the wide range of ales, many of them Cornish, and other drinks on offer. In the winter there are two roaring log fires; and in the summer there’s a lovely sheltered garden and children’s play area to keep everyone happy. Adam, formerly of the Gurnard’s Head, carries on: “We decided to completely overhaul our kitchen and menu for 2017. We’ve listened to customer feedback and we’re going back to basics with real comfort food cooked fresh to order, which is what diners want. This includes grilled dishes, a fantastic range of freshly made burgers and also hand-stretched sourdough pizzas from our new oven.”

They are both obviously delighted with the changes that have been made and rightly proud of the new menu. And with everything from light bites: such as buttermilk fried chicken, slow cooked smoky pork ribs, and seafood gnocchi; through to delicious burgers and pizzas (see box), to steaks and ribs from the grill, there is sure to be something to tempt you. The Sunday lunches are also a thing of local legend using locally sourced meats and fish and, sensibly, served from midday to 5pm for those of us who like our Sundays to run at a slower pace and aren’t ready for a scrumptious roast lunch until at least 3pm! So if you are looking for some proper comfort food with great provenance head over to the First and Last Inn and you won’t be disappointed.

ith our cover story exploring the wonderful world of pop-ups, it seems appropriate that the subject of this month’s restaurant review started life in a converted shipping container. Created by the team behind the ever-popular Hub St Ives, Hubbox has grown from its humble origins into a successful chain, with several locations popping up across the south west, including city stops in Plymouth, Exeter, a beach shack at Pentewan Sands, and a Bristol restaurant on the way. Today, however, we find ourselves in Truro, headed towards a converted Wesleyan chapel (transformation appears to be a recurring theme with Hubbox). Stepping inside, the styling is completely at odds with the austere granite façade – an affectionate yet playful tribute to all things Americana. Nods to 1950s diners are brought up to date with New York warehouse chic, accentuated by vintage industrial lighting, free-hanging Edison bulbs, and rust-glazed chairs, all enclosed by rustic wood and corrugated iron cladding.

Large signs and illustrations hanging from the rafters in bold primary colours invoke classic pop art, while sections of shipping containers pay homage to Hubbox’s origins. It’s a big, daring statement, one that could easily lack direction in the wrong hands, but here it all fits together effortlessly. It’s no wonder The Guardian dubbed it one of the world’s “coolest restaurant interiors”. The place is buzzing, even early in the day – the perfect atmosphere for an all-too-rare day out with the family. Of course, ambience and décor are largely irrelevant if the food does not live up to the bombast. This, however, is not a concern. Burger bars and street food have come a long way in the last few years, with grill-style options increasingly popping up on gourmet menus in some of the most fashionable restaurants. Long gone are the greasy outlets serving mass-produced flavourless fastfood – this is something altogether more appealing. As we know, the good public are a demanding bunch and expect more of their

food’s provenance and quality these days. The burger industry has responded in kind, and the secret to Hubbox lies in the quality of the ingredients. Meat is supplied by the prestigious Philip Warren of Launceston, grass-fed and farmed on the Cornwall and Devon border, while the all-important buns have been developed in collaboration with local favourite Baker Tom. This careful selection of the south west’s finest produce has paid dividends, with Hubbox’s signature burger, ‘Big Kahuna’, claiming the coveted top prize at the National Burger Awards 2015. But don’t be deterred by the carnivorous cuisine, as there is plenty of choice for all dietary requirements. Why not tuck into the ‘Mack Daddy’: grilled St Ives mackerel served with beetroot jam, horseradish mayo and wild rocket. There are also three different veggie burger options (that’s right, actual choice for a vegetarian rather than the usual token gesture). And for the glutenfree or simply those who fancy something different, all burgers can instead be served in a tortilla wrap. We peruse the impressive selection of craft beers, cocktails and malted shakes, before ordering an array of burgers and a few sides for the table – enough, it turns out, to feed a small army. Grubby fingers, much silent chomping and the occasional slurp confirm that all has been well received. Hub’s own draught pale ale proves the perfect accompaniment to the ‘Betsy’ burger, eclipsed only by the salted caramel shake. It must be said that coastal cuisine is great and, in our completely unbiased opinion, Cornwall does it better than anywhere else. But every now and then, it’s great to try something completely different and experience an altogether cheekier side of Cornwall. Hubbox offers precisely this; an innovative venture that celebrates its wilder side. Sure, I wouldn’t order such

a feast every day, but as a special treat, it can’t be beaten. A key tenet of Hubbox’s ethos is that “you don’t have to settle for mediocrity”. We’re happy to report that while Hubbox can lay claim to many things, being average isn’t one of them.

ever one to turn down either free nibbles or the chance to amble around the grounds of a Cornish castle, I wouldn’t need much persuading to attend the official opening of Pendennis Castle’s fantastic new dining experience, Café No 6. But when I heard we would also get to witness two of the castle’s guns being fired, including the mighty ‘Long Tom’ a rare 155mm Second World War field gun, needless to say it was quite an easy decision to make! The café is situated in a recently renovated section of the Victorian barracks. The bright, spacious café is beautifully decorated in a simple, understated styling that remains sympathetic to the building’s former use, with vintage photography from the castle’s active days adorning the walls. The new improved café can now serve up to 120 people, half of these outside, to capitalise on the unparalleled panoramic views across Falmouth and out to sea. The new space is accompanied by a fantastic new menu, pairing local and seasonal favourites with dishes inspired by the Tudor times, when the coastal fortress was built on the orders of Henry VIII to repel foreign invasion. Expect delights including potted Cornish crab with herb crostini, Cornish pasty and salad, locallysourced fish and chips, and Cornish porter cake. And for the more adventurous, you

must sample the roast capon (spiced roast chicken), vegetable pottage (oat-thickened vegetable soup), yeoman’s pudding and ship’s biscuits. From personal experience, I’m happy to report the selection of cakes is well worth the visit alone. The café is but one element of a bigger project to improve the visitors’ experience at Pendennis and provide a unique venue and gourmet catering for events including weddings. Who doesn’t dream of a wedding in a genuine Cornish castle with sweeping coastal views? Liz Page, Historic Property Director (West) for English Heritage was there to official open the new café. “The team have been working throughout the winter to prepare Café No 6 for its official opening,” said Liz, “and now the moment is upon us. For the 2017 season we are delighted to be able to offer our visitors a warmer welcome than ever before with a range of new freshlyprepared dishes served in comfortable surroundings either within our handsomely decorated new café, or outside on the parade ground in the Cornish sunshine. There has never been a better excuse to pay a visit to Pendennis Castle.”

hose of you who keep up with Cornwall Living will remember our recent piece about Olympic rowing champion and national treasure, Helen Glover. From the highlights of her career to her love of pasties, Helen kindly took the time during some precious time at home to talk to us and, now, she’s back out there and at it again! In fact, on Friday 31st March Helen and her husband Steve Backshall could be found warming up in the tropical heat of the Eden Project, preparing for their charity paddle of epic proportions up the Thames in aid of the Borneo rainforest, which took place this Easter. By hauling a two-seater kayak over the new Canopy Rope Bridge and Cloud Bridge – part of the Weather Maker section of the Rainforest Canopy Walkway at Eden, the pair got a taste for the rainforest that they’re aiming to help save. During the Eden leg of their training, Steve said: “We’re putting ourselves through hell training for it but it’s all for a very good cause. “World Land Trust are helping us buy a section of Bornean rainforest, saving it for the proboscis monkeys, the orang-utans, the pygmy elephants and all the other astounding animals that live there.” Helen, on doing what she loves for such

a noble cause, said: “Saving the rainforest is a really big mission so we’ve set ourselves a really big task – paddling 125 miles down the River Thames.” Eden Project also works closely with the World Land Trust. Indeed, Eden’s own Dr Jo Elworthy said: “Helen and Steve’s project with the World Land Trust is a great fit, not only with our work in Borneo but also all the stories we tell about the vital relationship between the tropical rainforest, biodiversity, climate and weather.” As part of this on-going work, Eden is now allowing visitors a chance to trek across the aerial rope bridge, shelter from the tropical rain and travel through clouds, with the opening of the Weather Maker! It’s incredible to see such amazing work done, both by the Eden Project and by Helen and Steve. Indeed, after having met her last issue, it’s clear to see that Helen is not just a national treasure – she’s one to be held dear, the world over.

The early morning dance on Flora Day, Helston (1907)

W A look back at life on the coast in days gone by.

e recently stumbled across this beautiful photo that shows people lining the streets as the end of the early morning dance goes by. This scene can still be seen today as crowds continue to flood the streets and dancers dress up in their finest attire. Indeed, with flags hanging joyfully overhead and the large drum keeping the beat, it is easy to imagine this scene as the Flora Day we know and love today. This year’s celebration will be on Saturday 6th May, so come along and see if you can spot the similarities between now and way back then. A brushwith the past We take a walk around one of Cornwall’s many ancient sites managed by English Heritage to rediscover a lost world on our doorsteps. words by:

Jason Fletcher

W

hen it comes to history, Cornwall really is spoilt for choice. Two giants of the past, Tintagel and Pendennis Castle, are right on our doorstep and both are excellent examples of the fine work the folks over at English Heritage do to reconnect us with the past. With the shadows of these two stoic examples of our history looming over us, one can be forgiven for being unaware of the numerous other accessible, amazing and ancient English Heritage sites the rest of Cornwall has to offer. With this being said, on a recent Saturday I went for a little exploration to see what else was on offer. First on my list was Chysauster Ancient Village, tucked away on the Penwith peninsula surrounded by stunning panoramic views. In a snapshot, the site is one of the largest and best preserved of several sites associated with Cornish Iron Age settlements. Arriving at the site after a short but enjoyable walk from the car park, I was not disappointed. Instantly I knew I

was in the presence of something ancient, and this only exacerbated my boyish sense of adventure as I explored the village further. As I wandered around, inspecting the settlement and its equally ancient Fogou, I couldn’t help but think that as fascinating as the site is, what amazed me was how this piece of ancient Britain was right on my doorstep, readily available to admire, yet I knew nothing about it until only recently. Chysauster Ancient Village is one of a vast array of ancient settlements, tombs, monuments and castles looked after by English Heritage across Cornwall. Next on my list are St Mawes, Restormel and Launceston Castles. So, now the weather is turning for the better and the extra daylight makes the weekends stretch out further, why not find a spot near you on the English Heritage website, put on your walking boots on, grab your torch and go stand where history happened?

June

at HfC

From incredible aerial choreography and jawdropping magic to an ever-impressive variety of musical talents, June at the Hall for Cornwall is shaping up to be an unmissable month of entertainment.

Hackney Colliery Band

Tuesday 6th June Hackney Colliery Band has had a phenomenal few years, including playing at the Closing Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics. Their set is as diverse as the London borough that gave them their name, with influences from contemporary rock and electronica to jazz and global brass. A New Orleans-style line up of trumpets, trombones, saxes and sousaphone, with a sprinkling of electronics, means that Hackney Colliery Band are rooted in tradition, yet sound thoroughly modern.

Mark Murphy’s V-TOL Presents Out Of This World

Friday 9th and Saturday 10th June This is the story of a woman’s woozy descent into the depths of a medically induced coma. Once safely cocooned, her crashed imagination takes over the show – creating a vivid inward cinema in which she reviews her life. But after discovering a shocking truth and with the medical team moving in for the kill, she must escape her subterranean safe house in a very real fight for life. Out Of This World is genre-defying actionpacked theatre from acclaimed writer and director, Mark Murphy. Set within a world of projected film and animation, it combines his signature mix of groundbreaking aerial choreography, original text and explosive special effects in a show that is both intense psychological thriller and heart-rending medical drama. Age Recommendation 14+ Contains strobe lighting, smoke effects and strong language.

The Addams Family

Tuesday 20th to Saturday 24th June The Broadway smash hit musical comedy comes to Truro, starring Samantha Womack, Les Dennis and Carrie Hope Fletcher. Everyone’s favourite kooky family is now on stage in the UK premiere of this spectacular musical comedy. Wednesday Addams is all grown up and has a shocking secret; she’s fallen in love with a sweet young man from a respectable family. When the two families meet for dinner, will Gomez keep his daughter’s secret from his cherished Morticia, or will there be hilarious consequences? Join them, Uncle Fester, Lurch, Pugsley and more for a heart-warming story of love, family and friendship… with a twist! Age recommendation 7+

All or Nothing

Tuesday 13th and Wednesday 14th June In 1964, Mod exploded onto British streets. All Or Nothing tells the electrifying yet bittersweet tale of four charismatic young kids from East London who became The Small Faces and were rocketed into the big time, only to discover the path to fantastic success is paved with exploitation, betrayal and ultimately tragedy. This quintessentially British ‘Mod’ musical celebrates the unique sound of the iconic music of The Small Faces, featuring all their hits.

Death of a Salesman

Tuesday 27th June to Saturday 1st July Willy Loman is not as young as he once was, and boy is he feeling it. After half a lifetime on the road, this once successful travelling salesman is unable to keep up in a changing workplace; he’s on the brink of unemployment, and he’s got bills to pay. When his dropout son Biff moves home again, Willy decides to give success one last shot. Can he prove to everyone he’s got what it takes?

n Morgan & West: Parlour Tricks

Death of A Salesman is widely considered to be one of the greatest plays of the twentieth century. Royal & Derngate, Northampton’s major touring revival of Arthur Miller’s Pulitzer Prize winning masterpiece, explores the devastating cost of not being able to let go of the American Dream.

The All-Star Stand-Up Tour

Saturday 17th June The All-Star Stand-Up Tour is back! Alongside compere Jarred Christmas, this year’s line-up includes star of Mock The Week and double Sony Award-winner Gary Delaney, Justin Moorhouse and Mike Gunn as seen on BBC 1’s Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow. Morgan & West: Parlour Tricks

Thursday 15th June Morgan & West have fooled Penn & Teller (Fool Us, ITV1), competed to be the Next Great Magician (ITV1), and even attempted to escape The Slammer (CBBC). Now you can join them for an evening chock full of jaw-dropping, brain-bursting, gasp-eliciting feats of magic, all served with wit, charm and no small amount of panache. recently spoke to upcoming Cornwall-based artist, Lizzy Bridges who, since graduating from Falmouth Art College in 2009, has continued to produce paintings around the UK, working mainly with oils and watercolour and focussing on narrative. Lizzy’s work takes interior and exterior spaces, often removing them from the people who inhabit them and focussing on the narrative that each has to tell. Take one of Lizzy’s recent projects, based on London lidos, for instance. By creating an atmosphere within the paintings and making the most of the strong colours, patterns and architectural forms, she brought to life the strong aesthetic link to the past that these places represent. When I spoke to Lizzy, she explained how she aims to evoke a narrative around the buildings themselves: “My aim is to bring attention to the detail and functionality of a space.” After time in London and Bristol, Lizzy has since moved back to Cornwall. Now, she’s part of the Krowji community in Redruth, an up-cycled grammar school that provides invaluable workspace and indeed a home to a vibrant and thriving creative community. Being involved with Krowji – which is Cornish for ‘workshop’ or ‘shed’ – Lizzy is an

Evoking the unseen

active part of a community that’s constantly driving the evolution of the Cornish arts and cultural sectors forward. Having already been impressed with the variety of work on her website – which varies from the coastal to the urban and everything in between – I was pleased to learn that Lizzy is currently exhibiting as part of Porthminster Gallery’s upcoming ‘10 Years On: Showing Off’ exhibition, celebrating the gallery’s tenth anniversary. Running until 6th May, this a great chance to see Lizzy drawing inspiration from Cornwall, with her work focussing on the less-explored view points of St Ives – an intriguing exploration of one of Cornwall’s most photographed seaside towns. “Because it’s been so well documented and painted, my aim was to look more at the architecture and the shadows; to capture a heart felt response to the lesser known view points in St Ives.” So, if you’d like to see Lizzy’s evocative work in the flesh, be sure to get yourself to Porthminster gallery before 6th May.

meet Linda at her gorgeous cottage with views over the glittering sea at Rinsey. She is petite, attractive and absolutely charming, though she admits: “just a bit nervous.” Inside, her cottage is delightful with some wonderful ceramics and stunning art on the walls, some of which are hers. One is a huge, gorgeous abstract painting. We settle at the table, with a pot of tea, in her lovely kitchen that leads out to a sunny garden and her summerhouse studio at the end. Linda grew up on a farm in Leicestershire, where her love of horses and art began. “I was always drawing and painting then, aged 14, decided I wanted to be an art teacher.” She went to Derby Art College, then onto teacher training, and straight into teaching. The family would holiday every year in Cornwall and she grew to love the area around Rinsey and Prussia Cove.

Work, horses and art continued then another great love arrived: her daughter, Hannah. Time passed, Linda divorced then sadly her parents died and Hannah moved to London. She tells me, “Then one weekend in November, I suddenly realised that it was my time now and I had to follow my dream and move to Cornwall.” She found her dream cottage online. “My brother and his wife, who lived nearby, went to view it for me, said it was lovely, so I rushed down the following weekend, had one look, and bought it! It’s just perfect and in my favourite place!” She continued teaching in Cornwall – her last job was teaching ceramics at Truro School. “I loved that job, but it was only as maternity relief – so when the original teacher returned to work I decided to take early retirement and leave on a high.”

We walk down to her studio. It’s perfect; light and warm in the spring sun. There are paintings and photos on the wall. One large canvas is propped up on a table against the wall surrounded by paints and brushes, with other canvases stacked up nearby. She pulls them out to show me, they are full of sea and big skies with lots of shimmering light. She points to the current work in progress. “I like to work with the canvas propped up like this rather than an easel in the centre of the room. It gives me space to step back and really look at what I’m creating. I can have three or four canvases in progress all propped up round the studio so that I see them when I walk in and will often realise what I need to do next – or exactly what is needed to finish a painting.” As she talks she is patting her heart as if the feeling comes from there. “I won’t let a painting go unless I’m happy that it’s finished, that I’ve achieved my aim. If I’m not happy with it then I’ll rework it.” It’s quite obvious that knowing a work is finished for her comes from deep within.

She does some solo exhibitions but will often share the space with her friend Jane and others. “We are so lucky that the Harbour and Dock Company let us have the Old Lifeboat House at such a reasonable price – it’s such a great space for local artists to exhibit. In fact, I love having Porthleven so close – it’s so vibrant and out here is so quiet. My main inspiration is from the sea and the ever-changing weather conditions; this part of the Cornish coast offers amazing subject matter. I am so very lucky!” And as for her rather unusual email address? “Ah… that was set up for me by a good friend.” Linda giggles. “I’m used to it now… and yes, she’s still a good friend!” I would highly recommend a visit during Cornwall Open Studios. Gardening

without the growing pains We talk with Elaine Parker, Physiotherapy Manager at Duchy Hospital, about the precautions we should be taking when working in our gardens.

words by:

Annie Cowen

A

s springtime arrives, the days grow longer and we look forward to warmer weather that beckons us into our gardens. However, as many people often boast a green thumb and a sore back, it is clear that gardening isn’t always a pain-free activity. “Most people do not consider gardening an exercise,” begins Elaine. “But it can be hard work and few of us are physically prepared for it. Most gardening activities are fairly rigorous and gardeners sustain the same injuries as sports people.” However, there are ways to avoid these aches, pains and strains. Doing a few simple stretches before heading out can help warm up your muscles and help prevent injury. As such, Elaine has very kindly provided some top tips for pain-free gardening!

Stretching: Do back exercises before and after gardening to mobilise and strengthen the spine.

Weeding and planting: Gripping, twisting and pulling can inflame tendons. Stop to massage wrists and lower arms. Lock hands with palms facing out and stretch them over the head, behind the back and out in front. Sustained bending can cause muscle spasm in the lower back. Move close in or use a longhandled implement. Cushion the knees with pads. Take a break or change activity every 20 minutes.

Lifting: Keep your back straight, bend your knees, look ahead and hug the load close to your body. Test the weight of something by

lifting one corner – if it’s heavy, roll it or push it. Divide a heavy load and make several trips using a wheelbarrow or trolley.

Digging and shovelling: Stand with feet shoulder-width apart for stability. Use a longhandled spade. Let your legs support you, not your back. Shovel small amounts.

Pulling up shrubs: Crouch close to the plant and hold it firmly, feet shoulder-width apart. Hold your head up, bend your knees and straighten legs, keeping the back straight. Lean away from the object as you pull.

Sweeping, hoeing and hedging: Stick to a forward and backwards action when sweeping and hoeing. Use small, controlled movements when trimming hedges; don’t overreach.

é ABOVE Elaine Parker, Physiotherapy Manager at Duchy Hospital

Equipment: Choose lightweight implements and think about your posture. When using a hover mower, for example, don’t swing from the waist; turn your whole body in line with the mower. Don’t overload wheelbarrows. If in doubt when starting petrol-powered equipment, ask for help. Hopefully these tips will mean that when you venture into your garden the only changes you’ll be making will be to your flowerbeds and hedgerows! Happy gardening!

W

hile Cornwall has always been able to boast an amazing array of things to do and see there has always been something missing; something that makes children jump for joy and adults immediately revert back to their childlike selves; something that offers fun, exercise and a chance to completely lose oneself in the moment. But what could this joy-inducing thing be? Trampolines!

Having grown up with trampolines I was so excited to hear that a trampoline park was opening in Cornwall and was all too eager to find out as much as I could about what this bouncy haven has to offer. The park boasts a jaw-dropping 66 trampolines, a dodgeball court and a foam pit; it’s no wonder the park is proving immensely popular! You can even challenge your friends to a precarious duel on the battle beams where every second is a fight to avoid the foam pit below. Or, test yourself by taking on the ninja warrior challenge, one of the first indoor obstacle courses in the south west. The course involves swinging and climbing your way through this exciting experience and challenging your all-over body strength. Indeed, this trampoline park offers an ideal place to get in shape while having a blast as the fitness classes offer something a little different to your usual gym experience. The classes provide a total body workout and improve speed, reflexes and stamina – and they are fabulously fun! In fact, NASA has studied the benefits of using a trampoline to burn calories and increase fitness!

They found that just ten minutes of trampolining burns the same number of calories as jogging for half an hour, making it an effective, low-impact and fun form of exercise.

“Trampolining is one of the fastest-growing activities in the UK” Jump 4 is the creation of businessman Robert Kujawski, and his wife Gabi, who set up the park to provide a much-needed facility to combine fun and fitness in the area. Robert says: “Trampolining is one of the fastestgrowing activities in the UK, not least because it is fun, affordable and open to all ages and abilities, as well as being a fantastic way to keep fit. We wanted to bring this opportunity to the people of Cornwall with our state-ofthe-art trampoline park.” It isn’t just small groups that are catered for either. The venue is ideal for children’s birthday parties, with free range of the 66 trampolines and foam pits followed by refreshments in the café, as well as corporate functions, as the exercise is perfect for team building! Of course, not everyone will be itching to swap the ground for a trampoline.

Luckily, the on-site café serves a full American-style menu, with tasty offerings including burgers, hot dogs and vegetarian options. This welcoming spot is ideal for parents relaxing while the kids jump to their hearts’ content. The café even has a soft play area for the really little ones and TV monitors showing a live feed of the trampoline park. The owners have no intention of resting on their laurels either, as the aim is for the park to be industry leading. Robert adds: “We will continue to invest in Jump 4, having exclusive pieces of equipment that make the park an unforgettable experience for all of our visitors.” Since opening in December 2016, the park has welcomed visitors of all ages, from toddlers enjoying a ‘little jumpers’ session to grandparents getting in shape at a fitness class. Jump 4 is open all day, every day of the school holidays, so it’s the perfect venue for having fun when the kids are off school, with the bonus of being great for fitness – whatever the weather.

Advice

Dip into your pension This year around 320,000 people will reach 55 and will benefit from more choices on how they draw, invest and spend their pension. We speak to Matt Begley, retirement planning expert at Harris Begley.

E

ffectively, pensions now behave more like a bank savings account, explains Matt, “with anyone over 55 being able to take out as much money as they like from their pension pot whenever they like and the first 25% of it is tax-free! However, the really great part about the new pension rules is that, not only can you dip in, you can also take advantage of the account and use it to save more and budget your retirement.” The government’s inspiration behind this legislation is that this gives retirees a more positive retirement, in which pensioners can dip into their large lump sums and spend it as they see fit. The cash-in option is expected to be so popular that the government expects to gain an extra £1.2bn in income tax from people withdrawing from their lump sums (the first 25% will be tax-free, but the remaining 75% will be taxed at the standard income rate). The abolition of the grimly named death-tax gives families greater opportunity to enjoy their retirement with the cash they earn and save. Plus, all pension assets can now be passed on to heirs, enabling the heirs to take

ê BELOW Matt Begley, retirement planning expert at Harris Begley Financial Planning

out the pension money passed down to them as and when they like. “Additionally a pension is now the only inheritable fund that is entirely free from inheritance tax. The new legislation creates a huge incentive to leave as much money in your pension pot as possible with the hope of encouraging everyone in the UK to begin saving into a pension scheme. In short, pensions just got a whole lot more attractive,” says Matt. Making the right decisions for your future can seem a daunting prospect and it’s essential that you take expert advice. Harris Begley takes pride in offering a personal service that takes your individual circumstances into account. Get in touch for a free, no-obligation initial consultation to discuss your pension and plan for your future.

It is worth noting that the value of pensions and the income they produce can fall as well as rise and you may get back less than you invested.

The

art is in the

technique We take a look at the work of fantastic local artist Mel Chambers and discover the incredible art of inlay tiles.

C

ornwall is well known to be an artists’ haven thanks to its incredible natural light and breathtaking landscapes. Indeed, our gallery pages demonstrate the amazing and varied art available across our fantastic county. It was in this section that a local artist caught my eye; amidst painters and sculptors to come across someone specialising in a lost art was intriguing. Mel Chambers is a self-taught artist who uses the ancient 13th-century technique of inlay tiles to create amazing and inspirational tiles. She blends beautiful images, inspiring quotes and poetry to create completely unique and bespoke pieces that are impossible to replicate. Inlay tiles are technically known as encaustic tiles, which means ‘to burn in’ as the colour is fired clay and embedded into the tile. In fact, due to the hard wearing and everlasting way the tiles are made, no selfrespecting monastery would have been seen without an inlay tile floor, as no matter how many pilgrims walked over them they would never fade away. Indeed, ancient tiles are still being discovered today, fully intact and just as beautiful as the day they were made.

The art of Alchemy Tiles is that each tile is individually hand carved into wet clay. Coloured slip (runny clay with oxides and stains added to it) is then inlaid on the top to sink into the carved areas. Once the slip dries, the tile is scraped back to reveal the image and script underneath. The tile is left to dry and then glazed and fired raw, only once and very slowly over three days. Once the tile is removed from the kiln a stain is wiped over to highlight the crazing within the crackle glaze. The whole process for each tile takes a minimum of two weeks, which is an amazing dedication to the process! These beautiful tiles can be used and enjoyed anywhere as they can be made specifically for any space and with almost any design. So, whether it’s a kitchen back splash, bathroom, fireplace or an individual tile for a loved one, they can be made bespoke to you, with your own meaningful message. A message that will be held eternally in earth and time.

Charity

An act of

compassion

Here at Cornwall Living we think it’s so important to support local charities and love the chance to catch up with those who share our values. We recently had the opportunity to learn about Dinah and the amazing act of kindness she made through her will.

egacies are vital to Cornwall Hospice Care as they fund nearly five months of care a year for the in and out patients supported through Mount Edgcumbe and St Julia’s hospices. As the charity prepares for its annual Make A Will Week (15th to 19th May), the Teagle family from Blackwater share their story of Dinah. “Dinah was always busy,” explains her devoted widower Fred, “she was a mum and wife and was very involved in the family business.” Sitting in the conference centre at Teagle Machinery, Fred and his youngest son Colin are reminiscing. “Mum looked after us really well,” begins Colin. “She was caring, she worried about everyone else and loved to help those less fortunate than herself.” Semi-retired now, Fred is full of admiration for his late wife, who was also volunteer treasurer for Cornwall Hospice Care’s St Agnes support group. “Dinah was a founding member and for 25 years worked extremely hard as a fundraiser so it wasn’t a surprise when she left some money in her will to help ensure the comfort of patients. A legacy is about

making a difference and it certainly will for Cornwall Hospice Care, as the NHS contribution is so small. It’s a great comfort for the family that Dinah left this gift, doing something positive for a Cornish charity that she loved.” Colin, who says he has happy memories of his mum all dressed up for local carnivals, says everyone should have a will. “It’s so important for the person and for those who are left behind as it provides an opportunity to remember family, friends and good causes. Mum would want Cornwall Hospice Care to carry on and flourish and this is her way of contributing to the charity’s future.” The depth of Dinah’s generosity is truly inspiring and offers hope that local charities will always have dedicated supporters. Indeed, Dinah’s show of compassion for her favourite cause shows us that we can make a difference even after we are gone. If you would like to find out more about Make A Will Week, contact Debbie Henshaw on the email address below and discover how you can make a difference.
