We’re all looking at the rather ravaged state of our gardens and patios after all that rain this winter! So we have plenty of ideas for your garden as well as your home. And for even more ideas, how about a visit to the 2016 Home & Lifestyle Show, with over 150 exhibitors and plenty of friendly advice? Take a look at our guide for who’ll be there and what’s going on. If you want to get out and have a bit of fun this spring, have a look at our festivals guide – some of the well known ones, and some smaller, more intimate ones to tempt you – you can even take your dog to the Port Eliot Dog Festival and tea party! There really is a terrific variety: from music buffs to foodies, steam engine enthusiasts to walkers – something for just about everyone. And I talk to Mark Sullivan about loving the Cornish lifestyle and taking Cornish produce global, and Bill Scott, founder of the Miracle Theatre, about his love of theatre and Cornwall. They both quite made my month! So settle back, plan some DIY, your visit to the Home & Lifestyle Show or book some time out for one of our fabulous festivals. And there are all the usual stunning properties, design, health and wellbeing, getaways, and dining out ideas to think about. Take a leaf out of Bill’s book and do a bit of lounging whilst you ponder! Enjoy!

Oh knickers! Truro Fabrics have joined the knicker revolution, becoming excited new stockists of Bristol based Flo-Jo Boutique knicker patterns and kits! Discovering the British brand at this year’s Knitting & Stitching Show, the Truro Fabrics team quickly snapped up Flo-Jo’s vintage inspired range of knicker patterns and complete kits, featuring iconic Liberty of London prints. Store Manager Louise Barker says: “We just loved these flirty, floral and frilly projects, which make beautiful gifts or a fun first-time make. We guessed they’d be a hit and we were right! They’re flying out of the door already!” The kits are complete with everything you need to start on your knicker-making journey – and once you’ve mastered your first pair, pick up a pattern and carry on creating and experiment with other styles. These wonderful creations are designed, produced and packaged in the UK, and available in store. Truro Fabrics also stocks a wide selection of beautiful fabrics, blinds and curtains. If you enjoy crafts, the shop caters for all your haberdashery needs, stocking sewing machines, wools, embroidery thread, ribbons, and a comprehensive selection of knitting yarns and equipment, as well as many dress making patterns, needles, swatches and buttons. So why not head over and see for yourself? 01872 222130 www.trurofabrics.com
Carla Regler exhibition at the Old Lifeboat Studio, Porthleven To celebrate the much-awaited return of the Porthleven Food Festival, Carla Regler’s fantastic new gallery on Chapel Terrace will be open from 10am to 5pm on both the Saturday and Sunday of the festival weekend. Along with Carla’s award-winning photography work is the Maritime Collection – a collection of fascinating and evocative images from Porthleven’s past, wonderfully reproduced by John Strike. Carla is also putting on an exhibition in the Old Lifeboat Studio in Porthleven, an historic building in a beautiful location that’s well worth the visit alone. She’ll be showcasing her atmospheric photography, with drinks and bites kindly provided by Seadrift.
As if you needed any more reasons to enjoy the Porthleven Food Festival, this is a must-see for the list. Hopefully, we’ll see you there! www.carlaregler.com 01326 558733
Countrywide LPG cylinders and bulk gas now available in Cornwall and Devon Countrywide LPG supplies bottled and bulk gas to customers across the UK. Following the acquisition of Cornwall Farmers last year, Countrywide LPG has now extended the area it covers in the south west, providing customers in Cornwall and Devon with a real alternative to their existing gas or oil supplier. Countrywide has supplied LPG to homes, businesses and the farming community for over 35 years. It’s this heritage that has led to Countrywide LPG becoming the largest independent supplier of LPG in the UK.
The team will be at the Cornwall Home Show, at the Royal Show Ground, Wadebridge, on 30th April and 1st May. Contact the team to find out more or get a free, no-obligation quote. 0800 1691735 www.countrywidefarmers.co.uk/lpg

The man who lost a leg but gained a legacy As part of this year’s Truro Festival, the city is celebrating the forgotten Cornishman who lost a leg but gained a Theatre Royal License for The Haymarket in the early eighteenth century. The city’s annual cultural festival, funded and delivered by Totally Truro Business Improvement District (BID), takes place from 2nd to 9th April, bringing a hive of creative, cultural activity to the city during the second week of the Easter holidays. 2016 marks the first of a three-year project exploring, rediscovering and celebrated the forgotten Truro man – Samuel Foote. There will be art installations, pop-up theatre performances and interactive nonsense poems to entertain the crowds. These will be followed by an exclusive illustrated talk by actor and director Ian Kelly on 26th May, whose award-winning book Mr Foote’s Other Leg has recently completed two acclaimed runs in the West End – the second being at The Haymarket! Ian Kelly comments: “Truro’s Sam Foote is one of the greatest ‘lost’ heroes of British culture – a witty and dangerous satirist, but so much more than that: a one-off hero in the history of comedy. It’s wonderful, 250 years after he lost his leg and gained a Theatre Royal License – one of only three in the whole history of the London stage – that his hometown should celebrate what a Cornishman can do when faced with a challenge.”

The day itself starts with the Halan-Tow a boisterous mummers’ play, the first dance at 7am, the children’s dance at 10am followed by the midday dance with the men in morning dress and the ladies in fabulous ball gowns and hats. Ending with the evening dance at 5pm. Find some space in the ‘Doctors Garden’ to watch the dancers dance through. And make your way to Cross Street for a bit of spontaneous Cornish singing if you’re lucky. www.helstonfloraday.org.uk And, there’s even a festival for our much loved canine companions.
Port Eliot Dog Festival 7th May Roo and Lark, Port Eliot’s resident whippets, host a day for all dogs and their owners. very now and then, a property comes along and suddenly everything else pales in comparison. We could sum this one up with a simple exclamation: “Wow!” Everything about Treworgan, from the inside to the grounds, exudes luxury, style and exclusivity. Meandering down a private drive, you’ll find a beautiful 19th century mansion built in local Cornish stone, sitting in nine acres of land that gently rolls down to the water, overlooking Rosemullion Headland. Situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the views from the house are simply staggering – a stunning stretch of coastline framing Falmouth Bay. The sense of grandeur continues inside, abounding with bespoke detail at every turn. This is the perfect retreat for someone who likes to entertain and to live in style. The bathrooms and kitchen are particularly spectacular as befitting a house of this stature, in such a glorious setting. The brick-built coach house would make a fantastic artist’s or musician’s studio, or the ideal place for storing boats. The mature, well-planted gardens are interspersed with magnificent trees, with a strip of woodland providing privacy to the north. A large stone terrace leads down to the croquet lawn while the remaining gardens descend towards the sea, with a gate leading directly onto the coast path and rocky beach below. Large swathes of the surrounding farmland and coastline are managed by the
National Trust, including Bream Cove. The Helford estuary, immortalised by Daphne Du Maurier in her novel Frenchman’s Creek, is renowned today for its beautiful sailing waters, considered to be among the very best in the country. There’s an excellent array of yachting facilities nearby including deep-water moorings on the Helford, yacht marinas in Falmouth and a number of sailing clubs. For the sports enthusiast there are several golf courses within the area. In addition to sea fishing and trout fishing, other watersports including windsurfing and waterskiing are available at nearby Helford Passage. The immediate surroundings to Treworgan provide some breath-taking coastal, country and creekside walks. The nearby village of Mawnan Smith offers a range of shops, post office, Italian restaurant and public house. The historic port and university town of Falmouth is just four miles away, with the cathedral city of Truro nearby. Treworgan really is a beautiful spot; a rare chance to own a little slice of Cornwall’s beautiful south coast.

Advice
A happy home Get the right mortgage that works for you, with advice from Harris Begley.
S
o you’ve finally found your dream home and it’s time to arrange a mortgage. For many, this means a lengthy call to the bank or several weeks wait for an appointment – only to be offered their standard mortgage rate. In contrast, a mortgage advisor is ideally positioned to find both the lowest interest rate and best mortgage for you.
Knowledge of the market is key With a great deal to consider, it’s not quite as simple as just opting for the cheapest mortgage rate. Knowing which rate, term, lender, features and insurance to get is time-consuming and complex. A mortgage advisor takes your whole circumstances into account in order to recommend the right mortgage for you.
The best mortgage for you Harris Begley, one of Cornwall and Devon’s most respected Financial Advisors, has a team based in Truro, Helston, Hayle, Penzance and Plymouth. “We always offer a free, no-obligation consultation”, explains Managing Director Matt Begley. “Unlike a high street bank which is restricted to offering you its own rate, we work with over 130 banks, building societies and financial institutions. Consequently, this first consultation is essential to understand your individual circumstances, in order to find the best mortgage solution for your needs.”
Fees
A mortgage fee of £495 will apply at the application stage. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage or any other debt secured on it.
It’s not just about the rate Banks and building societies all have different lending criteria. Mortgage advisors work with lenders on a day-today basis, so they know the background criteria. For example, some lenders require three years of trading history before acknowledging self-employed income in respect of the amount they are prepared to loan, whereas others only require one
year’s accounts. This key knowledge and experience can make all the difference in obtaining the optimum arrangement.
Qualified, unbiased advice Mortgage advisors have to be qualified to give you mortgage advice and have a duty of care which is legally regulated by the FCA (Financial Conduct Authority). Effectively that means your advisor has to recommend an unbiased, suitable mortgage and legally be able to justify why the particular mortgage they have chosen is right for you.
A fast-track application process There can be any number of delays in the process as a general result of buying or selling. “At Harris Begley our aim is to minimise the frustration of these delays”, explains Matt. And you won’t be calling a remote call centre, with the dedicated, Cornwall-based administration team available 9am-5pm weekdays, by phone or email, you can easily speak to the person managing your application. Matt continues: “Forging a close relationship between estate agent and mortgage advisor provides the optimum solution in terms of completing the sale or purchase of a property in the fastest time frame. We believe providing a personal touch has been instrumental in establishing our reputation as trusted Financial Planning Advisors across Cornwall.” Contact the team for a free, no-obligation initial consultation to discuss your requirements.

Revive & refresh With the changing of the season, why not try a daring new look or just pamper yourself following the winter chill.
T
he team at Inspiration Professional in Truro has recently welcomed a new Salon Manager, Steph Jones. Steph previously managed a salon in London’s Covent Garden and trained with the big names in hair styling, including Redken, Tigi and Lee Stafford, before moving to Cornwall a year ago. Together with Inspiration’s Beauty Manager Ayla Herbert, who better to help you freshen up your look for spring? We catch up with Steph and Ayla, who provide a few tips to revive this spring. LOVE YOUR HAIR “Give your hair some well-needed TLC after winter”, says Steph. “Hair dries out following exposure to central heating, so I recommend not only using conditioning treatments regularly at home, but to boost moisture with a more intensive salon treatment, such as the Redken Chemistry system or the Milkshake Active treatments.” Time for a colour? “Spring is the perfect time to go a few shades lighter to brighten your style ahead of the holiday season”, suggests Steph. “Refresh tired colour with a conditioning toner, such as Redken Shades EQ.” If you think it’s time for a change, there’s plenty of celebrity inspiration around to bring your look bang up to date. “Why not go a bit shorter like Adele, or try adding a fringe like Kendal Jenner?”
REVIVE YOUR SKIN “Winter can be harsh on skin, whatever your skin type”, adds Ayla. “Refresh and renew tired skin with a prescriptive Dermalogica facial which is tailored to your own skin’s needs and concerns. Protect your skin even on overcast days by wearing SPF. This will help prevent premature aging, sunspots and reduce sun damage.” Ayla continues: “Often overlooked, brow and lash maintenance can really highlight your eyes. First, have your brows waxed to compliment your face shape. They can then be tinted to appear thicker and less sparse. Finally, a lash tint will create thicker and darker lashes.” Inspiration Professional has salons in Truro and Penzance, run purely by apprentices working towards higher-level qualifications with Truro and Penwith College. Both salons offer a range of professional hair and beauty treatments at affordable prices.

Advice
Family matters Even if you have been left out of a Will, it may be possible to make an inheritance claim, says James Burrows, senior associate at Stephens Scown.
L
ast year an inheritance claim brought by Heather Ilott hit the headlines after the Court of Appeal awarded her £164,000 from her mother’s £486,000 Estate. The two had been estranged for many years. Then, in February 2016, the case of Joy Williams was reported in the press after she successfully claimed the half interest in the home she co-owned with her partner of 18 years, which would otherwise have passed to the latter’s wife, who he had never divorced. How did Mrs Ilott and Ms Williams do this? Well, both cases were brought under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975 which enables certain categories of claimants to bring a claim against an Estate where reasonable financial provision was not provided by the deceased’s Will or under the Intestacy Rules (which govern an estate where no Will is left). So who can bring a claim? The categories of claimants are: spouses, civil partners or former spouses and civil partners who haven’t remarried; co-habitants where they lived with the deceased as husband, wife or civil partner for two years prior to the deceased’s death; children of the deceased (including illegitimate or adopted children) and those treated as a child of the family; and anyone else who was wholly or partly maintained by the deceased.
When deciding cases, the judge will look at a broad range of factors such as the size of the estate; the financial resources of the claimant and the other beneficiaries; and any disabilities suffered by the claimant or any other beneficiaries. Where spouses or civil partners are concerned, the judge will consider factors such as the length of the marriage, the age of the claimant and the contributions made by the claimant to the welfare of the deceased’s family. For children, the judge will look at their educational and maintenance needs. Each case tends to be unique. Many factors can weigh on the decision of the judge who, if reasonable financial provision was not made for the claimant, will have to decide what would be just for the claimant to receive. James Burrows is a senior associate in the dispute resolution team at Stephens Scown in Truro. The team is top ranked in the Legal 500 guide highlighting the best lawyers in the country. a very British crisp from Cornwall Mandy meets Mark Sullivan who is taking some very Cornish foods out to the world.
I
t is not without a little trepidation that I set off to meet Mark Sullivan, the Chairman of Warrens Bakery. He has earned a stellar reputation for growing companies in the food industry, in particular in developing their markets internationally. In Cornwall it started with Cornish Sea Salt, and now includes Warrens, and the Cornish Seaweed Company. But I needn’t have worried; an extremely amicable chap calls out: “Hello, come on up” from the top of the stairs at Warrens. We shake hands and he smiles warmly – the first of many; we fall into easy conversation as he sorts out tea and ushers me into the meeting room – there are a lot of colourful packets of crisps on the table, which puzzles me slightly – but more about crisps later! Mark moved to Cornwall “to relax and take things easy,” he explains with a rather sheepish grin. And although he does seem very relaxed, I don’t for a minute think he is taking it easy! Like so many of us, he had developed a deep affinity (his words) with Cornwall from childhood – it was a regular holiday haunt and later became a favourite for his own young family. So, after a hugely successful career advising food and related companies internationally, he left the bright lights of London behind and moved to Cornwall with his family. But it wasn’t long before he got drawn back into all things foodie! He met and loved the team and product at Cornish Sea Salt and quickly saw how he could help to grow the company and the range they sell. “It’s such a fantastic product”, he tells me, “with such great provenance (a word he uses a lot), coming from the highest quality water from the seas around

the coast of the Lizard, no-one else can beat us! The company already had a wonderful brand image but needed a much bigger market.” He invested in the company and got stuck in! Cornish Sea Salt is now in over 35 countries around the world and has quadrupled in size at its base on the Lizard. Mark adds, “Taking the Cornwall brand out into the world is something I’m very passionate about,” Then he met the Warrens family and a similar story emerges. “I knew I could work with the brand,” Mark explains. “It’s Cornwall’s oldest bakery. I could see the potential of making it an international brand. There is such a strong story of heritage in the shops but we run that alongside state-ofthe-art retail systems.” He is also passionate about developing the staff and cross-fertilising staff across the businesses. “Someone can join us and develop a really successful career, with a wide range of experience, across the businesses. The food industry has plenty of opportunities and I want to see it happening in Cornwall. We achieve that by being based in Cornwall but operating globally.” Right on cue we are joined by Jason Jobling, Chief Operating Officer at Warrens, who is a great example of how the company likes to grow its own, as well as attract the best. He tells me: “My father was a baker here, so I guess baking is in my blood. I started working at Warrens at the age of 12 after school, dusting doughnuts with sugar! When I turned 15 I asked for, and got, an apprenticeship training to be a baker… and now I’m Chief Operating Officer!” Not bad for a boy who started out sugaring doughnuts! has obviously been a lot of hard work and learning along the way, including stints of work experience with other bakers around the UK to learn, and bring back, new skills and ideas to Warrens. Jason passes me a bag of crisps. “This is our latest development and they are a really good example of what we are striving for.” Mark picks up the story “We recently took over The Cornish Crisp Company; an excellent concept but it was struggling as many small companies do. We saw a different way to put Cornwall on the map and developed a new range that offered appeal internationally and created The Great British Crisp Company, flying the British flag with a Cornish heart, with all the amazing provenance that comes with that. We already have great bakers who regularly work on new product development, we already work with local potato growers, cheese makers and so on. And we have the provenance of high-quality salt and peppers. It’s a real match made in heaven. But we wanted to be truly different as well as improve on the quality of crisps, so we developed new flavours around iconic traditional British meals like ‘fish and chips’ and ‘English breakfast’.” Jason grins and adds: “I clearly remember Mark coming in one day and saying: ‘Lets have this new adventure!’ It’s certainly been an interesting journey. We had a huge debate about whether ‘chicken tikka masala’ was British, and it definitely is a contemporary classic.”

So that explains the packets of crisps on the table! Mark offers me a packet of fish and chip crisps – absolutely delicious! Not to be outdone, Jason opens some chicken tikka masala ones – his favourite – and he’s right… they are gorgeous, tasty tikka chicken with a little kick of curry in a crisp. The whole range has been really well received in the trade. They have the usual core range of flavours, like salt and vinegar but they use Cornish Sea Salt and West Country cider vinegar – and there it is again, Mark’s favourite word – provenance! Whilst munching on crisps I ask them both about time off. Apparently Mark has been known to check out supermarket shelves when on holiday to see what’s new or different! And he starts to tell me about the opportunities with Cornish Seaweed Company. “Seaweed is very sustainable, hand harvested and is incredibly nutritious. We are getting some very strong interest from a couple of ‘upmarket supermarkets’ to stock it, and we can use it in our other products too!” Great provenance again, I think quietly with a smile – his passion is definitely contagious. But I persevere, and both Mark and Jason agree that family time is very important when you work so hard. Mark likes to go canoeing and kayaking on Carrick Roads when he gets the chance and loves the unique geology of the Lizard. He also likes Godrevy for a walk and a great breakfast at Godrevy café.
Jason still enjoys baking at the weekends with his three children, the eldest of whom is only 7. He has also started to grow his own vegetables “My kids love helping but generally end up making mud pies!” His favourite beach is Sennen, where he proposed to his wife, and loves the view from the tennis courts at Trelissick. But the conversation quickly returns to baking, provenance, crisps and the staff team. Jason tells me, with some pride, that Mike who runs the crisp factory started off working in the bakery. “There really are great opportunities for young people coming into the food industry with us as we grow.” Mark adds: “I really love Cornwall and feel extremely lucky to live here. And... it feels even better knowing we can make a difference to the local economy by taking great Cornish baking out to the rest of the world. Not just the best Cornish products, but the best British food, based in Cornwall is what we want to do.” And it seems highly likely he will succeed!

SECOND AA ROSETTE FOR TREVALSA COURT Trevalsa Court is a beautiful boutique hotel on the south coast, leading down to a secluded sandy beach. Who wouldn’t want to escape to this idyllic paradise? But it’s not just the stunning location alone that’s tempting visitors. Trevalsa Court has just picked up its second AA Rosette, awarded for consistently high standards, excellence, precision in cooking and attention to detail, especially in quality of ingredients. Head Chef Adam Cawood says: “To have all the kitchen team’s hard work recognised by the AA with the award of a second rosette is fantastic, but we are not resting on our laurels. We still have many more ideas so let’s see what the future brings”.
Trevalsa Court owner, John Gladwin adds: “This award is terrific for the hotel and a great achievement by Adam and his team. The pressure on the Head Chef in a small hotel like ours is much greater than in a standalone restaurant. The menu has to change daily, but Adam has managed this whilst maintaining really high quality and consistent cooking to produce beautiful and innovative dishes. My increasing waistline is a testament to this!” TREVALSA COURT School Hill, Mevagissey PL26 6TH 01726 842468 www.trevalsa-hotel.co.uk

THE PERFECT SUNDAY ROAST AT THE LEMON ARMS After hearing such good things about The Lemon Arms at Mylor Bridge, we headed over to the popular local pub in the creekside village on the Carrick Roads for a traditional Sunday lunch. And we certainly weren’t disappointed. With generous portion sizes, the roast is an absolute must! The perfect antidote after a brisk stroll around the creek, along with a pint of Proper Job. As with all the menu, everything is locally sourced wherever possible, from the beautifully tender meat to the fresh vegetables. Another recommendation is the hand-picked wild mussels, perfect in flavour and size! Head Chef Chris and his team simply steam them in white
wine and garlic and serve with French fries. Delicious! THE LEMON ARMS Lemon Hill, Mylor Bridge TR11 5NA 01326 373666

The return of spring also sees the return of some fantastic seasonal produce. So, we catch up with Robert Bunny, Head Chef at The Ferryboat Inn at Helford Passage, who gives us a sneak preview of what to expect on the menu. Look out for Cornish sprats. “These gorgeous small silver fish are beautiful dipped in milk then flour and deep-fried, served on toast with a smoked tomato ketchup”, he says. Robert is a big fan of local shellfish: “Helford cockles are one of my favourite ingredients. As a child I went cockle picking every year. They’re great steamed, served with vinegar, white pepper and brown bread. Also, pickling and serving them with pork belly is dreamy!” A favourite seasonal veg is Cornish asparagus. “This is unbeatable”, says Robert. “No messing, just quickly blanched, tossed in butter or some French dressing and Cornish sea salt.” Robert also loves Canara Farm chard for its versatility. “I love this leaf! It’s local and there are so many ways to use it. We like to pickle the stalks and serve with crab rarebit and hazelnuts. Charring the leaves gives a beautiful nutty flavour, perfect served with pork or lamb.” FERRYBOAT INN The Helford Passage, Nr Falmouth TR11 5LB 01326 250625 www.thewrightbrothers.co.uk/ferryboat-inn.html

BAKED
As Vicky’s Bread celebrates ten years in the business, we catch up with the company’s founder Vicky Harford who has long championed the artisan baker.
A
t Foodie, we love a good heartwarming story, especially ones that involve independent and enterprising ventures doing well – those that champion our fine produce and artisan craftspeople creating away here in Cornwall. So, it’s a delight to congratulate the Vicky’s Bread team on a decade of success! 2016 has been an exciting year so far for all the team. “We’ve moved into beautiful new premises, there are new products in the pipeline, including breadsticks, flatbreads and new Saturday specials, and we celebrate our tenth anniversary in May”, explains Vicky. “We’re also expanding our delivery range into Devon.” As a result of these exciting developments, the Helston-based artisan baker is taking on more staff, and teaching them from scratch how to make bread – the slow, traditional way. “A lot has changed since we started out ten years ago”, laughs Vicky. “Back then, nobody knew what a sourdough was, and when we boasted about how slowly our dough was fermented, we got a lot of puzzled looks!”
These days, artisan bread is hugely fashionable, and the health and taste benefits of sourdoughs are well documented. Sourdough has a naturally greater shelf life, it’s typically more moist than standard dough, has a greater depth of flavour, and its culture helps our bodies to extract more of the minerals and goodness from the bread. So, all in all, it’s pretty good stuff! And people are beginning to cotton on to its wonders. This is great, not only for Vicky’s Bread, but for food lovers everywhere, because a great loaf of bread really is the most wonderful thing. Here’s to the next ten years! Vicky’s bread is available all over the county in local convenience stores, farm shops and delis. Contact the team to find an outlet near you.

A shore thing
We go undercover to enjoy award-winning seafood at The Shore in Penzance.
A
s great seafood lovers, my partner and I have wanted to sample the menu at Bruce Renee’s specialist seafood restaurant The Shore in Penzance for sometime, and when asked to write a restaurant review for Foodie it gave us the perfect opportunity. Once our table was reserved we booked bed and breakfast accommodation at the Artist Residence in Chapel Street Penzance. We’ve visited Penzance a few times but weren’t familiar with Chapel Street and I was impressed by the interesting mixture of independent shops in this traditional area of Penzance. After a leisurely stroll around the shops we changed for dinner and popped into the Turks Head for a quick pint before walking up the hill
to The Shore. The restaurant is centrally located in Alverton Street and it’s nice being able to park for free and walk to the centre unlike most other towns in Cornwall. I’ve always found fresh fish a far more flavoursome and healthier alternative to meat and wasn’t at all disappointed to discover only fish dishes on the menu that evening. Having said that, the variety of fish was diverse enough to satisfy different tastes. All the food is locally sourced by Bruce Renee personally prepares and cooks all of the dishes on the menu and even grow some of the vegetables in his garden. Apparently you can also see him washing up at the end of the night! The Shore is Bruce Renee’s first solo project and perhaps the
pinnacle of an accomplished culinary career including roles including Sous Chef under Gary Rhodes and Head Chef at Michelinstarred ‘Shanks’ in Northern Ireland. Although we booked an early evening table the restaurant was already half full when we arrived and it was great to be given the choice of remaining tables by the waiter. We both felt comfortable and relaxed in soft lighting and ocean-inspired decor. The restaurant layout is stylish and minimal without unnecessary clutter adding to a warm and rustic ambience. Our waiter was very unobtrusive, giving us plenty of time to settle in before bringing the menus. My partner was amazed to find her favourite ‘Tripel Karmeliet’ Belgian beer on the drinks menu and I followed suit with a ‘Chimay Red Cap’ Trappist beer. It makes a refreshing change to find a quality craft beer menu in addition to the wine list. The beer was served with a delicious, light and crusty small granary loaf hot from the oven. A perfect appetiser. For starters I ordered the brill with ginger, spring onions, garlic and wasabi – a minimal dish with fresh clean flavours and interesting textures. The combination of fresh garlic flowers and mild wasabi perfectly complemented the flavours of the brill. My partner decided on the mackerel with peanut dressing. For the main course I ordered the monkfish nitsuke with samphire, noodles, diakon and shimmer. A delicious Japanese inspired dish with suptle flavours and generous prices of monkish. The choice was
42 Cornwall LIVING | Foodie CLM 45--EHM--Restaurant Review--2.00.indd 2
21/03/2016 15:05
not easy as I would happily have eaten any of the main courses on the menu. My partner opted for the lemon sole which came with a citrus butter sauce and cocotte potatoes. The two dishes were refreshingly different, the monkfish was was quite fleshy and the delicate flavours of the samphire and shimeji mushrooms went perfectly with the noodles, while the lemon sole with its delicate flesh was more traditionally prepared. For dessert I chose the passionfruit tart with pink rhubarb and vanilla ice cream and my partner tried the Valrhona Dulcey chocolate cremeaux, dark chocolate sorbet with peanut. Again the two dishes were different; my fresh and fruity tart light in comparison to the rich chocolate mouse. I washed the sweet down with another Causeway craft beer, while my partner tried the coffee, served with three complimentary sweets: a fresh macaroon, a piece of Cornish fudge and a handmade chocolate. A deliciously sweet end to a very enjoyable meal. It became increasingly obvious throughout the evening that Head Chef Bruce Renee takes great pride in the menu and it was great to see him talking to diners at the end of the evening, discussing the food. We look forward to returning soon!

id you know that the Pastel de Nata (Portuguese Custard Tart) was originally dreamt up around the 18th century by Catholic monks who, in using large quantities of egg whites to starch linens, including nun’s habits, found themselves with a surfeit of egg yolks to use up? What a delicious result! The Pastel de Nata is a firm favourite of visitors to the Courtyard Deli & Kitchen in Falmouth. Fondly referred to by the Deli team as Natas, the pastries are made daily on-site and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Dining at Gravy Boesti, Truro’s boutique bistro, is all about big flavours, beautiful presentation and the experience itself.
T
aste and presentation. These are the two main food factors for Scott, Ian and Chris, the attentive and entertaining team at Gravy Boesti. Nestled close to Truro Crown courts, Gravy Boesti is a theatre as much as an eatery. Its unique open kitchen is the focus of the premises and Head Chef, Scott Williams, loves nothing more than to dazzle his patrons with expert and stylish food preparation, right in front of your eyes. The restaurant oozes comfort and relaxation. The main dining area is naturally illuminated by a central skylight and the interior décor comes together to create a great sense of space, giving the restaurant an
airy quality. Which is all the more impressive when you take into account the expert chefs preparing their delicious menu just a few feet from the diners. The team at Gravy Boesti love mixing classic and contemporary flavours. Cornish born and raised Head Chef Scott Williams’ favourite ingredient happens to be chillies, he says: “I love the spice, the heat and the versatility. When used correctly they can enhance both sweet and savoury dishes, such as our magnum pineapple and chilli desert. And they can be served hot or cold.” Scott developed a love for spicy, bold flavours during his time at Cribbs in Falmouth. Scott’s introduction to Caribbean cuisine has left its mark on his dishes. Chris, however, is more interested in Italian flavours and most importantly, cheese! “My motto is ‘everything tastes better with cheese’. It’s great in cooking, or in a simple picnic of really good bread and fantastic Cornish cheeses.” Being a bijou bistro providing such delicious food, it is best to book in advance to avoid disappointment. And with the warmer months arriving you can always enjoy the tranquil, secluded courtyard and patio areas.

FOOD with a view With a new head chef and rave reviews we had to discover why everyone is talking about the Gylly Beach Café.
S
hhh!… Don’t tell anyone, but we’ve found a restaurant with a view to die for and food to match. The Gylly Beach Café sits at the back of the golden stretch of sand that is Falmouth’s famous Gyllyngvase Beach. Overlooked by the imposing Pendennis Castle on the headland, from here you can drink in the amazing views out across the Lizard Peninsula and towards the Helford River. Whether seated in the smart restaurant looking out through the panoramic windows or enjoying a seat on the wrap-around terrace, that view is everywhere. Come rain or shine – the terrace has patio heaters and
50 CORNWALL LIVING | FOODIE FCM 19--ED--Gylly Beach Cafe--2.00.indd 2

a canopy that can be brought across in wet weather – you can be assured of fine wine and good food while watching the yachts that have sailed out of Falmouth harbour scud across the water. The Gylly is open 364 days a year, so for those chilly days out-of-season you even get a rug for your knees! It’s not just the view though that’s drawing everyone to the Gylly. This unique and stylish, family-run and award-winning eatery prides itself in serving homemade food using the highest quality local produce wherever possible. Coffee, ice cream, meat, fish, cheese and artisan bread are all sourced within a 15-mile radius. Everything is homemade, from the morning croissants to the after-dinner desserts. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly – think gentle music, welcoming staff and modern decor. All the staff clearly work as part of a well-oiled, close-knit team. Soul, spirit and smiles – that’s the Gylly family in a nutshell. The Gylly has come a long way since the café came into new ownership back in 2000, but one thing that hasn’t changed 16 years on is the excellent service, which keeps customers leaving with a smile. The café is open everyday from 9am for coffee, breakfast, patisserie and delicious homemade cakes. A leisurely lunch lasts from 12-4pm, with a carefully chosen menu of culinary delights that is just the thing to satisfy your hunger after a long walk along the coast, a swim in the sea or a sail around the bay. Or indeed a break from work, shopping or just because… With evening tables bookable from 6pm,
at night the Gylly gets all grown up. As the restaurant lights are turned down low in summer you can watch the sky change from azure blue through to the golden hues of a Cornish sunset, while in winter the twinkling lights of the candles on the table reflect out across the water. Offering such delights as Creedy Carver duck with pickled mushrooms, pan-fried stone bass fillet with vanilla mussels and Philip Warren moorland grass-fed beef fillet with burnt shallots, it’s all about getting the best out of Cornwall’s rich and diverse ingredients for the Gylly’s new Head Chef Dale McIntosh. Formerly Chef Patron at The Merchants Manor in Falmouth, where he fronted the team that saw the hotel awarded 4 AA star rating, Dale is passionate about all aspects of food, produce and cooking. A finalist in South West Chef Of The Year in both 2014 and 2015, he is no stranger to high accolades. With Dale now part of the Gylly family, his plan is to take the café to the next level, adopting the company ethos that: “We try to make a difference in everything we do.” We are looking forward to some delicious new recipes from this award-winning chef and our next trip down to the Gylly Beach Café for some fabulous food with a view.
Gigs at the Gylly
From 7.30pm every Sunday you can kick back and enjoy some brilliant music at Gylly Beach. From soloists to band nights there’s something for all tastes. See the website for listings.

he Alverton, a 19th century manor house converted into a luxury hotel in Truro, is the perfect place to stay for a weekend in the city. But it’s just as great if popping in for a quick lunch or dining out in a beautiful setting. We catch up with Head Chef Simon George, who is kind enough to share one of his current favourites on The Alverton’s menu.

Meet Head Chef, Simon George
Simon enjoyed cooking from an early age, serving breakfasts in a small café at weekends. After leaving school, he started working in pubs and restaurants. Offered an amazing opportunity as chef de partie in a large Cornish hotel, he gradually worked his way up to Head Chef. Simon thrives under pressure, from service to weddings. Having taken time out to start a family, Simon has been relishing his role as Head Chef at The Alverton since 2014.

Pop culture has become ‘pop-up’ culture in recent years with events centred on food, films, music and other fun activities dotted around the city. Mega-popular Dublin collective Happenings was set up by a group of fun-loving creative types and you’ll find them regularly whipping up a frisson of outdoor shenanigans across the city; enjoy classic movies at the outdoor cinema popups, or get your zen on at a yoga class in the park. Elsewhere, Dublin Pop Up combines creative space with mouth-watering delights in bespoke dining experiences, while Ranelagh-based weekend-only dining experience Salt Lick offers themed food, plus it’s BYOB so it’s good on a budget.

Dublin has a whole host of interesting cultural activities available that won’t trouble your wallet. The Irish Museum of Modern Art on the grounds of the 17th century Royal Hospital Kilmainham contains magnificent sculptures, ancient chestnut trees and inviting avenues, while the National Gallery of Ireland near Trinity College is a great spot to appreciate fine art. You can also stop by the ‘Dead Zoo’, aka the National History Museum, and marvel at the animal specimens on display – including a dodo skeleton. Remember, all are completely free!

Walk the coast Image courtesy of: Jennifer Rowlandson
Get your boots on, and prepare for Helpful Holidays’ fantastic new festival, Walk West Cornwall.
F
rom the 14th to the 16th of June, Helpful Holidays’ brand new walking festival Walk West Cornwall will be taking you to dramatic clifftops and stunning coastal vistas. Each walk has been handily rated from easy to hard so you know exactly what to expect before setting off. They cover a range of topics – some are informative, historical walks, others hunter-gathereresque foraging runs. Dogs are more than welcome; in fact every walk is open to pets and completely family friendly. With 17 walks in total, there’s a bit there for everyone. For historical hikers, the tour of Helston town will fascinate. For the artists within there are a couple choices, notably the ‘Learning About Lamorna’ walks with the knowledgeable Rob Fishburn. For the cavemen and women, there’s ‘Foraging for Flora and Fauna’, an active walk centred mostly on Porthleven culminating in a live outdoor cookery demonstration, using ingredients and such collected on the glorious walk.
The team at Helpful Holidays live and breathe the West Country and are well suited and eager to be sharing their delight and knowledge of the region. Helpful Holidays’ property manager, Bev Plunkett, says: “West Cornwall is a magical place and we’re excited to be offering both residents and visitors the opportunity to join us and discover special places, meet fellow walkers and enjoy exercising in the fresh Cornish air.” Why not book yourselves into one of Helpful Holidays’ welcoming holiday cottages to thoroughly enjoy the festival and enjoy a hot bath, fun evening and a well-earned sleep at the end of each day. Evergreen in Rinsey Cove sleeps six for £98pp that week and the Birch Studio in Lamorna Cove sleeps three from £133pp that week. For more west Cornwall cottages visit www.helpfulholidays.co.uk. g n i k a Mperfect memories Now’s the time to get all the family together in a stunning location and enjoy a perfect stay.
S
pecial occasions – whether it’s a Ruby wedding anniversary, 40th birthday or a long overdue family reunion – are momentous times that warrant something truly extraordinary. These magical moments spent with loved ones create beautiful memories that will be cherished forever. Special occasions of this exact sort are what Cornwall-based company Perfect Stays specialises in, with a portfolio of staggeringly beautiful, large houses. And size really does matter when it comes to these occasions. Bringing the whole family, or a group of old school friends, together is no small affair. Ensuring that there’s plenty of room for everyone to relax and unwind is crucial, as is making sure that the kitchen can cope with cooking meals and that there are separate communal spaces for groups to spread out and find solitude. It’s the added extras, too, which make these great life events all the more poignant. Perfect Stays offers an inclusive concierge service to help arrange a private chef for that special day, or organise the taxis and book the restaurant; arrange the balloons or coordinate that surprise cake on arrival. This invaluable service doesn’t go amiss. So much so that
Perfect Stays has seen a 25% increase in the use of its concierge service over the past year. In addition, out-of-season bookings have also increased by 25% – which is typically when many people celebrate their big occasions, over weekends and outside of peak periods. While this is great news for Perfect Stays, these figures also have a positive impact on the local businesses in the area, who may find it gets a bit slower during the quieter months. Not only are more people coming to Cornwall outside of school holidays, but they’re getting stuck into local activities and eating in the best restaurants, making the most of the picturesque cycle trails and the precious time they have to enjoy in these beautiful houses. So, is there a big occasion in your life that warrants a celebration? Or perhaps, it’s simply about time you got that reunion pencilled in the diary. But, whatever the reason, book the dream now and start preparing to make those magical memories!

Best of both Looking for village charm and beaches on your doorstep? We discover The Villa in Poughill, near Bude.
W
e wondered if it’s possible to have the best of both worlds when enjoying a beach break in Cornwall: the close proximity to one of our many gorgeous beaches coupled with the chocolate box charms of a pretty village, away from the hustle and bustle of modern life. And then we were introduced to The Villa in Poughill, near Bude, a beautifully updated period house that seems to tick all the boxes. The 200-year-old house has been lovingly renovated throughout, while retaining its original features, from the fireplaces and the slate flooring, to the wood panelling and deep window seats, and even the old water well embedded in the kitchen. The large and secluded garden, with mature trees and a terrace, provides a fabulous, private safe haven from the real world – the perfect spot to sit back in the evening with a glass of something cool and refreshing. Step out the front door and you are looking at St Olaf’s church, a 13th century kirk which still stands to this day. But what Cornish village would be complete without a pub? Poughill is home to the Preston Gate Inn, serving some of the south west’s finest beers and wholesome, homemade pub food. Even in the height of summer, it manages to retain a relaxed vibe. So with the peace and quiet sorted, what about the all-important days out at the beach? Well, Poughill is a couple of miles from the coast and the stunning Summerleaze and Crooklets beaches. Both beaches are immaculate, with fantastic facilities and surf hire available. The smaller pebbly cove Northcott Mouth sits about 25 minutes’ walk away too. This whole stretch of coastline is a mix of sandy beaches, dramatic cliffs and rolling surf; breaking itself against rocks or inviting you in to catch the perfect wave. If you prefer to stay dry, the coast path offers sweeping vistas and space to relax refresh and inspire. After all, isn’t that what a break in Cornwall is all about? The Villa is available to let for weeklong stays, and short revitalising breaks with Beach Retreats, the specialists in Cornish beach holidays.

Retro chic Caravans have come a long way since the 1800s. Enjoy beachside luxury at Perran Sands, Perranporth.
“nowadays even the most basic of caravans come with top quality fixtures and fittings as standard”
I
n England the origins of caravans go back to the early 1800s, when they were mostly just functional; shelter used by travelling circus folk and farm workers. In 1947, the first static caravans were introduced – they did have a tendency to warp as they were made from hardboard. Although equipped with gas lighting, coal fire for central heating and a single gas burner for cooking on, there wasn’t a bathroom or any running water. Despite their basic functionality caravans really started taking off in the 1960s and nowadays even the most basic of caravans come with top quality fixtures and fittings as standard. Or you can stay in the height of luxury in the high-end caravans and lodges that are widely available. These spacious spaces have fully-equipped kitchens, contemporary décor, improved insulation, and even running water and a bathroom. Over the years the humble caravan has become a sought after option for a ‘home away from home’ for people looking to buy a holiday home. The beauty of the modern day caravan isn’t just that it’s spacious, stylish, yet comfortable.
Just as important is its location. Perran Sands, in Perranporth, is right on the Cornish coast where you’ll find turquoise sea views galore, surfing and sand dunes. Perfect if you simply want to escape to the coast and keep yourself to yourself. There are great facilities right on your doorstep, if you want them, including swimming pools, adventure golf and other activities and facilities that will keep even the most energetic families entertained. If you love exploring the great outdoors, there are plenty of lovely coastal walks and dogs are more than welcome to stay with their owners at Perran Sands, too. Finding a holiday home right on the beautiful Cornish coast may seem like the impossible dream, but it’s actually easier and more affordable than you might think. Escaping the urban sprawl to the where the air is clean and scenery is breathtaking at Perran Sands costs from £22,995 with site fees from £3,766 per year.

Tea and a chat with Bill Scott, Artistic Director of Miracle Theatre, is a real treat on a cold spring day.
T
words by:
Mandy Milano
he joyful Bill Scott greets me with a huge smile despite the fact that it’s a rather cold morning and they’ve had no power for a while. Frustrating at the best of times – but Bill just seems to exude a wonderful warm glow. We head off to the pretty little café at Krowji for tea and a chat. Bill is the Artistic Director of our muchloved Miracle Theatre, which he founded in 1979. He has written, adapted and directed nearly all of the company’s productions; he’s also a filmmaker and avid beekeeper! “It could have been very different,” he tells me. “I started out in the wholefood business with a market stall and ending up with three shops called The Granary; in Penzance, Truro and Falmouth. But I’d always loved the theatre; aged seven I used to write my own plays, I got a degree in theatre and appeared in ‘rep’. It became clear that being a shopkeeper wasn’t what I wanted to do. So I got involved with putting on the Cornish miracle plays, Ordinalia, with some trained actors and friends – I particularly remember some very colourful devils – and that’s really where Miracle Theatre started. A bit serious but with plenty of comedy, action and music; a bit anarchic really.”
Miracle are renowned for their magical fantastical outdoor productions as well as touring the south west’s village halls taking mayhem, fun and theatre out to the public. When I ask him about his role now Bill rocks back laughing. “Oh I don’t act anymore, absolutely not; I just don’t have the stamina for it! Arriving, unpacking the van and setting up, grabbing a meal if there’s time, then performing… and then having to take everything down at the end, pack up the van and drive to wherever you are staying for the night. But I still direct and write.” Bill tells me that he likes to write in bed,

and enjoys the thinking bit of the process most. He says: “I like to do a lot of lounging and thinking first.” He grins again. “Then I rely on having deadlines to get the writing done! But the great thing about writing and directing for Miracle is that I’m working with people I really respect – a lot of changes come up during rehearsal.” Bill is part of the core team of four at Miracle Theatre. “It’s just Annie, Emma, Sue and me in the office and then we work with a group of freelance actors, there’s always a core group of people who stay for a while, go away and come back. Outdoor theatre is a very different type of acting. You can’t pretend the audience isn’t there; you have to look them in the eye and involve them in what else is going on. There’s a strong tradition of outside theatre in Cornwall; it can be difficult with what the weather chooses to throw at you, but can create fantastic opportunities that actors can use. We’ve had just about everything from noisy peacocks nesting in the trees to dolphins playing in the sea at the Minack, it all has to be woven into the performance!” Bill moved to Cornwall when he was 16, went off to college, but “I just kept coming back. I completely fell in love with Cornwall. I’m not
“I like to lounge a lot when thinking about a new adaptation and I like to write in bed.”
Cornish but I do have Cornish children.” He adds with a grin. He lives near the Lizard and loves Church Cove for walking with his labrador ‘Cookie’. “And I have a real fondness for Redruth, working here I can see it emerging again. But I love my home; it’s wonderful to pootle about just looking after the place with my wife. And… I am very lucky to have my family and grandchildren living nearby.” It’s time for me to leave and let Bill get back to work. It has been an absolute delight to spend time with him. His sheer joy and complete love of life leaves me feeling warm and fuzzy for the rest of the day; I even stop and buy chocolate biscuits for the office. As Bill puts it “It’s all part of loving what you do!”

Take a breath and deal with the day-to-day stresses of everyday life, with a little help from Amanda Winwood.
H Image courtesy of: Simon Burt www.simonburtphotography.com
ow do you deal with stress? Juggling family and work? We all have times when we need to restore some balance in our lives and “catch our breath”. My work with Made for Life and Spiezia often takes me away from home and some days can be long, with lots of different meetings. Do I love what I do? Absolutely. Can it be challenging at times? Without a doubt. So, I thought I would share a simple method I use – every day and at least eight times a day – it takes just one minute. ONE MINUTE BREATHING Find a quiet spot ideally (although I have used this on the tube in London in rush hour – it still works!). Ground yourself by putting both feet on the ground (hip-width apart) and take a deep breath, through the nostrils preferably. When you breathe in, you should feel your belly gently expand. Exhale through the mouth, feeling your belly slowly contract. Repeat 5-6 times. I usually close my eyes whilst I do this and encourage you to do the same.
When you are done have a gentle stretch or wiggle your fingers and toes. Repeat as often as is necessary. Just take that minute… for you. PUT SPRING INTO YOUR STEP Many people are training for marathons (including our own lovely Juliette, Manager of the Made for Life Foundation). With this in mind, it’s time to think about our feet! How are yours? Local company, Celtic & Co, definitely has your feet in mind with its gorgeous Celt boots and Seasalt offers great shoes too. Giving your feet and toes some TLC is vital.
Hugs from Amanda x
Amanda is well known in the health and wellbeing industy for her organic range ‘Spiezia’ and also as founder of the Made For Life Foundation, working with people recovering from cancer. www.spieziaorganics.com
Your spring treat for feet, homemade scrub Ingredients
1 tablespoon of baking soda 1 tablespoon of brown sugar (Demerara) 1 tablespoon of olive oil A handful of chopped mint (fresh is best) – optional
Method Mix together before taking a bath or shower and pop into a waterproof container. Use to soften feet and this scrub can be used on elbows and knees too. Mint gives a great scent to uplift if used.
Did you know?
Feet have no oil glands so keeping them softened through applying balms and oils is great for their health!

Living wei dementia w Diagnosis can be frightening, but Cornwall Care are here to tell you: it isn’t the end, it is possible to live well with dementia.
I
t’s important to remember that dementia is caused by diseases of the brain and is not a natural part of ageing. A common type of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease, which usually starts by affecting people’s short-term memory, but there are many other illnesses that can come with dementia, at any age, and we’re still learning about it. Dementia is not just about losing memory. At Cornwall Care, the Admiral Nurse team provide Dementia Friend sessions for people to learn more about what can happen with dementia, but also what you can do for yourself or someone else, to help. With a caring support system and a certain perspective, life can be positive and even fun with dementia. It’s possible to communicate and enjoy moments of true connection that can surprise and delight. People with dementia are still people; they are individuals with experiences unique only to them. They require support and care that suits their individuality, focussing on their loves and joys, and things that help them to remember, relax and maintain their memories. SOME THINGS THAT CAN HELP Brain games such as word searches, crosswords and dominoes keep the brain active which can help with maintaining memory. Life story work such as life story books and collections of sentimental items can help to spark conversation and past memories. Helpful items such as rummage boxes, twiddle muffs, knitted activity blankets and adult colouring books can be very relaxing, aiding with engagement and connection
that may help to increase communication. Having a routine can help in reducing confusion and anxiety. Focusing on the individual and accepting their reality is the most important thing if you are caring for a person with dementia. If you can find out what works for the individual, it’s possible to communicate and connect in wonderful ways. It may be that it’s singing, playing music, reading poetry, watching films, or looking at old photographs and memorabilia from the years of their childhoods or work days… everyone is different, communicating and remembering in their own special way. A person with dementia may experience memories differently, but emotions still feel the same. For example, if you leave a loved one with dementia, they may forget who it was that visited them and what they did or said, but they will remember how it made them feel. While a face may be hard to name, they will know if it’s a face that comforts them. If you or a loved one have been diagnosed with dementia, the Cornwall Care team strongly advise that you get professional advice to find out more and learn what you can do. To find a Dementia Friend session near you, visit: www.dementiafriends.org.uk

Health
t fi g n i t h g i F Weight loss surgery at Duchy Hospital can lead to a wide range of health benefits.
T
he prevalence of obesity has become a hot topic in recent years. The proportion of the UK population classified as obese is now roughly 1 in 4. 24% of men and 27% of women according to 2014 figures from Public Health England. Obesity can cause a range of health problems including diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, infertility, cancer, stroke and sleep disorders. With a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 35+, it can be physically difficult to exercise, whilst the body has basically reset itself to this obese level. The body then strives to defend this weight, making dieting very difficult. At this level of obesity, some patients may choose to explore the option of weight loss surgery. Duchy Hospital offers a range of procedures, all of which come with a comprehensive aftercare package, as well as pre-operative support. This is a very important element to take into account. Long-term success requires commitment and support; it’s not a case of simply having the operation and carrying on as before. There are a number of options tailored to individual needs; from gastric bands and balloons to sleeves and bypasses. Alongside a programme of exercise and diet control, these have proved highly effective at reducing BMI levels. BENEFITS Patients with a BMI of 35+ may be candidates for gastric band surgery, typically losing
50% to 80% of their excess weight. There are major health benefits too. Following weight loss surgery, a patient’s chance of developing type 2 diabetes is reduced by up to 80%. TYPES There are three commonly performed weight loss surgery operations: gastric band, gastric bypass and the intragastric balloon. The gastric band operation involves inserting a restrictive band around the top of the stomach, resulting in a prolonged feeling of fullness after small meals. The gastric bypass operation alters the level of hunger hormones, resulting in a decreased and healthier appetite. A gastric sleeve turns the stomach into a narrow tube combining elements of both the other operations. The gastric balloon is non-surgical, and suitable for less overweight patients. The balloon is inflated inside the stomach via a telescope and works by restricting the volume of food which can be eaten. The balloon is a temporary measure and must be removed after six months but can be a useful kick-start for weight loss.

otton Mills Interiors Truro is an independent company specialising in fabrics, furnishings and design that’s enjoying a second year of being awarded the prestigious Best of Houzz Award for Customer Service. What’s more, Cotton Mills is expanding with a purpose-built second premises in Truro, hoping to hold its launch party towards the end of the year. So, with the recent downturn, why are so many people turning back to small businesses? We’ve all been guilty of contributing to the growth of multinationals – the convenience and continuity of knowing exactly what you are going to get whether you are walking into a store in Birmingham or Bangkok. But that is exactly what’s starting to turn people off. You know what you are going to get, and it is okay, but it’s nothing special. All of the decisions about what products and services are being provided, and how they are provided, are made and portion controlled at head office.
Home Show Guide
So what is different about an independent business? They are often small companies that have been set up by people with a passion for their area of interest, and these individuals are actively involved in the service you receive. Products offered can be selected for their quality and suitability, and adapted as necessary to the individual needs of the customer. There is a sense of discovering a hidden treasure involved in finding a good independent, and companies like Cotton Mills are certainly benefitting from appreciation for the handmade in Cornwall appeal with less people opting for the factory made option. There’s also the added satisfaction of knowing that 70p of every £1 you spend with a local business goes back into the local economy. It has been a tough decade in retail, and although we have lost some wonderful presences from the high street, we should also remember that businesses that have survived have done so for a reason. We’re blessed in Cornwall with a wide range of independents thriving because they can deliver a level of service and expertise that makes using them a delight that continues to outstrip the ‘computer says no’ corporations. So if you’re looking for some interior design advice for your home, why not stay local and contact the team at Cotton Mills?

ccording to www.holidaycottages. co.uk, one of best ways of improving your property’s potential to attract guests is to install a hot tub. “It’s a luxury which guests may not be able to enjoy at home, adding an element of relaxation to their cottage break. The hot tub will continue to attract guests all year round, with many enjoying a dip right through the winter!” So why choose a wood-fired tub? Well, for a start, they look simply stunning, complementing the natural design of your garden. A tub from Kernow Springs is handcrafted from the finest timbers, while the water is heated by burning wood. No electricity is required at all, which means much lower running costs, no noisy pumps and only minimal water treatment required. 100% natural – 100% sustainable! Kernow Springs’ fabulous tubs caught the eye of popular actress and TV personality Caroline Quentin, who couldn’t resist their charms. “I love my Kernow Springs hot tub!” beams Caroline. “Beautifully constructed from Thermowood, it’s a joy to use and looks wonderful too. I keep chemical use to a minimum and it’s really simple to heat and fill. Sitting under the stars, up to my neck in hot water is a wonderful, eco-friendly way to relax.” As well as gracing many homes and holiday cottages across the south west, these beautiful

tubs have proved popular in hospitality venues too, which share the company’s ethos of great design, bespoke luxury and eco credentials. These include The Green, a wedding venue in Liskeard; Soul Camping, luxury glamping in north Cornwall; and The Old Mill House, a wonderful boutique B&B in Padstow, where their Valentine’s weekend package sold out in record time. “I would highly-recommend Kernow Springs Eco tubs”, says Adam, General Manager. “Not only is it a one of a kind product but Martin’s knowledge and dedication is exceptional. Nothing beats a glass of champagne in the tub on Christmas Day! I hope to work with them again in the future.” So if you’re looking to boost your revenue, all-year-round interest and eco image, get in touch with Martin and the team now.
Roaming eco spa Kernow Springs’ ‘Roaming Eco Spa’ will be on tour at a festival near you this summer, and is available for private hire for weddings, parties and corporate events. Hot tubs, saunas, showers, changing yurts, Bedouin chill-out lounge and more… the complete spa package for your event!

otted across Cornwall you will find beautiful stone fisherman’s cottages, agricultural barns, bridges and churches, from medieval to Methodist. One element that unites many of them is the local granite used to build them – instantly recognisable and intrinsically Cornish. This wonderful local material has been used in Cornwall for over 5,000 years. Only since the 19th century has it been quarried commercially, and used in buildings and monuments throughout Britain and worldwide, including London’s iconic Tower Bridge. We catch up with Edd Duke of Duke Stone of Cornwall, an independent stone masonry company that champions our fine local materials. “The rocks of Cornwall are legendary with the granite backbone of the Duchy being formed at least 100 million years ago!” says Edd, who talks passionately about the stunning materials we are lucky enough to find right on our doorstep. “The Lizard Peninsula, where our workshops are based, is famed for its rare yet beautiful red and green serpentine rocks, which can be seen in the cliffs and rocks at nearby Kynance Cove.” With a team of experienced and professional stonemasons, Duke Stone produces beautiful bespoke items for the home and garden, from
incredible kitchen worktops and vanities for the bathroom, to fireplaces, hearths and wonderful sculptures. Stone has many great benefits, being both hardwearing and heat resistant. But the real beauty is the natural variation, rich with textures, patterns and hues that change in the light. Mixing stone with other natural materials produces fantastic results, with subtle differences in texture and finishes. It’s a versatile material too, equally at home in a 300-year-old character cottage or a highly contemporary apartment, depending the specific finish. Indeed, natural stone is perfect if you’re looking to for a real statement piece to complete a room. Take, for example, the unique, stunning serpentine tiles and sink – contemporary, yet millions of years old, they are guaranteed to be a talking point! The team will be returning to the Cornwall Home & Lifestyle Show again this year. So if you have some ideas for your home that you’d like to discuss, pop over to the stand and have a chat, or call into their office at Cury Cross Lanes, just outside Helston.

“Using a project manager gives one consistent point of contact throughout the build, bypassing the time and effort spent dealing with multiple contractors.”
S
ince setting up in 2014, the team at Carpenter Oak Cornwall have often been asked if they can provide a complete project management and build service for their timber frame projects. “After two years establishing ourselves and building relationships with local people we are now in a position to do this”, says Project Manager Tim Simpson. Tim talks us through the benefits of using a complete build service for your timber frame project. Organising a build project is a full time job and people often have commitments which makes this difficult. “There are different methods to organise a build but, in our experience, to save time and stress it can really make sense to use a project manager to co-ordinate it”, explains Tim. “Using a
project manager gives one consistent point of contact throughout the build, bypassing the time and effort spent dealing with multiple contractors.” Another benefit in using a project manager or complete build service is that there is one company consistently ensuring the same high standard throughout the entire process. “Here at Carpenter Oak Cornwall, when we are engaged to deliver a complete project we are able to design and construct the building ‘our way’. It means we can use tried and tested details and methods to ensure that the finished oak or timber framed building will meet the highest of expectations.” Stuart Voaden, Director at Carpenter Oak Cornwall, believes that success in a project-managed build comes from the team involved. “For many people, taking on a build, whatever the scale, is a challenging prospect. Peace of mind comes from working with people like Tim and his team who know what they are doing, but more than that they know the importance of clear communication. On top of this they are fun and enjoyable people to work with. All these elements in one package is not as common as it should be.” Tim and the Carpenter Oak Cornwall team will be on hand during the Cornwall Home Show at stand SR5.

ere in Cornwall, we love to celebrate the great outdoors and now the clocks have gone forward, there’s even more reason to get outside and enjoy some fresh air. Often our gardens are looking a bit forlorn this time of year after the battering over winter. So it’s time to get the lawnmower out again, and dust off the garden furniture ready for the season ahead, and inject a bit of life back into your garden. Perhaps your dilapidated shed or log store has seen better days and it’s time for a replacement. How about some new trellis or planters to fill with colourful flowers? Maybe it’s time to invest in that summerhouse that you’ve always dreamed of. Or you could finally fulfil that life-long dream and get some chickens!
Well, if any of the above apply, you should really speak to the team at Launceston-based South West Timber Products. The family-run business has over 12 years’ experience of building beautiful, outdoor wooden items, whether for the garden or the smallholding. They have an impressively diverse array of products on offer, from games rooms and art studios to poultry sheds and stabling solutions – even ornamental wishing wells! The latest addition is the range of uPVC cladded garden rooms, perfect for enjoying the last of the evening sun with a glass of wine. But if you have very specific needs, perhaps to fit an awkward outdoor space or for a particular function, then the team can create something bespoke, tailor-made just for you. All timber used by SWTP is accredited with both FSC and PEFC, ensuring both sustainability and ethical sourcing. There are several stockists of these fantastic products across Cornwall, including Maunders, Homeleigh Garden Centre and MA Grigg, but the team are just as happy talking to you directly. So why not create your own secret garden, fire up the barbeque, and relax in bliss in the great outdoors?

The benefits of air source heat pumps revealed.
O
“Carbon savings are often the icing on the cake”
nly in recent years has the idea of installing a heating system that repays itself gone from a distant dream to a reality. With an air source heat pump, this is exactly what’s possible. To discover more, we catch up with Rob Carey, Managing Director of leading Cornish renewables provider GreenGenUK, who recounts the recent interest they’ve seen in their renewable heating technologies. “When customers approach us and ask about our heat pumps, they’re often sceptical when we tell them a system can pay for itself”, explains Rob. “Once we’ve surveyed their property and provided our detailed proposal pack, breaking down their investment and financial returns, our argument speaks for itself. Carbon savings are often the icing on the cake.” Heat pump technology has been available for over a decade, however significant increases in efficiency and output, lowered installation costs and better installation practices, combined with financial incentive from the government, have made heat pumps a viable investment opportunity. GreenGenUK believes domestic customers installing an air source heat pump for their space heating and hot water will financially benefit in two ways: through the RHI scheme and energy savings. The government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme was initiated to incentivise uptake of renewable heating
technologies. This deemed tariff, in effect, pays customers for the renewable heat their system generates over a period of seven years, with annual payments ranging from £200 to £1500, depending on the system. Secondly, switching to a renewable heating alternative can save domestic customers up to 50 percent on their heating bills. As a modern heat pump is capable of outputting in excess of three times as much heat energy as the electricity they require to operate, they are an incredibly efficient heating technology. These efficiencies translate into money in homeowners’ pockets. In addition, replacing heat demand from fossil fuels with free, renewable heat from a heat pump protects customers from future rises in price. “We urge anybody switching or upgrading their heating system to consider a renewable alternative”, continues Rob. “Our proposals do the talking for us and all of our payback periods are calculated as per guidelines and against current energy prices. When energy prices rise, which is inevitable, a renewable alternative might look even more economical.”

Home from home Top design tips for your holiday let, from Clare Hughes of CH Interior Design.
I
f you have a holiday let also used for your own getaways, you’ll no doubt want it to be personal and cosy – reflecting your own personality – while being practical for other visitors. Thankfully, Clare Hughes has come up with some neat solutions to add both style and functionality.
Create rooms from unused spaces By thinking creatively, make use of previously redundant areas. It’s often possible to design upwards, building in bunk beds with storage underneath. Build cloakrooms into understairs cupboards, or fit galley-style kitchens into wide hallways, in turn freeing up another room. “Done properly, they needn’t look ‘shoe-horned’ in”, explains Clare. “In fact they should open out spaces, making them look larger while being functional.”
Make it homely, but avoid clutter
é ABOVE Three interiors creating different atmospheres ê BELOW Pirate FM’s stylish reception area; a space-saving shower room, modelled from non-functioning cupboards
“Big pieces, such as large format pictures, make far more of a statement”, says Clare. “Lots of small pictures tend to look fussy. The same goes for ornaments – one big bold vase of flowers says more than several smaller ones. Keep surfaces uncluttered – this also helps with the cleaning and changeover!”
Use accent colours “Try one accent wall with a bit of colour. Keep the colour soft on larger areas, and then add bolder statements on smaller pieces such as cushions, or in window
blinds.” A simple way to change colour schemes without great expense. Likewise, it’s much easier just to have to repaint one wall, instead of the whole room.
Open spaces are good The trend is moving away from totally fitted kitchens towards more open spaces. “Try open shelves and multi-purpose spaces such as large islands for cooking, storage and gathering around to eat. This is particularly useful for holiday lets with an open kitchen-diner.
Don’t overdo the gadgets Keep kitchen appliances simple and don’t have too many gadgets, in constant need of repair or replacement. Instead, invest in good quality, well-designed appliances. A variety of great colours and finishes, such as black or bronze finished stainless steel, are available, adding some designer kudos to your kitchen.
Keep bedroom storage practical Don’t crowd the bedroom with lots of furniture. Think of clever ways to create storage that takes up less space. “Simple poles hung on ropes look great for hanging clothes.” Fit a large format wall mirror at the back of the shelves – as well as being practical it will increase the sense of space within a room.
User-friendly bathrooms Bathrooms must be practical and easy to clean. Medicine cabinets aren’t necessary for holidaymakers on a short stay. Use a large, well-lit mirror. Practical can be stylish though. “Large-format tiles look great, are easy to clean and add a feeling of luxury. Heated towel radiators are a great way to store towels – and they look fabulous.”

Teak chic
Prepare your garden for spring at the leading outdoor furniture showroom at Par.
I
t’s that time of year when we all start thinking about our gardens again. So, if you’re looking to give your patio an overhaul, head over to Patio Furniture at the Rustic House Showroom, the UK’s leading online retailer of quality teak garden furniture, operating from Par, near Fowey, for over 15 years. The business has grown steadily, always designing and sourcing its own products direct from factories and moving exclusively to teak, which is sustainably sourced from certified governmentcontrolled plantations in Indonesia. Teak has proven to be the most durable, long lasting, aesthetically pleasing wood, which withstands the stress of our climate, lasting many years. Now for the first time you can visit the Par Moor Road site where the old factory has been converted into a stunning showroom and vast decking display area. Here you’ll find what is probably the largest range of teak garden furniture in the country, along with over 150 different parasols and garden cushions in an array of colours and styles. There are over 40 different garden seats and benches, 50 different tables which, combined with the numerous styles of chair, will provide two to 14 seater sets, to your own requirements. Of course, there are also the lovely sun loungers and steamer chairs. If that isn’t enough to tempt you, everything is discounted between 30 and 50% on website retail prices, with free delivery and assembly, prices starting from chairs at £29, tables £59, benches £89 and sets £119. The showroom is open seven days a week with ample free parking and the added attraction of the Rustic House Showroom, with its exciting range of bespoke indoor furniture. This includes the new range of sofas alongside the teak root and reclaimed furniture, where you can relax and enjoy an organic, fair trade coffee and homemade cakes in the new coffee shop.

ith the arrival of spring and improvements to do, we popped into Everything Stone’s showroom in Par to check out their range of wonderful finely finished natural stone worktops, flooring and paving. The company is run by brothers Phil, Alex and Ross. Caroline (Phil’s wife) manages the accounts and reception. We met up with Phil and brother Alex; Ross who is their senior builder was out on site. Alex took us around the showroom. “We’re constantly updating our product range”, he explains. “At the moment our quartz range of kitchen worktops seems to be gathering more interest, whereas the granite worktops are always popular. We have supplied marble vanity tops, bath surrounds and shower wall cladding in many different bathrooms.” Phil chips in: “We have some fabulous porcelain flooring that can be used externally as well as internally, and handcrafted wall tiles”. I was particularly taken by the digitally printed and coloured glass splash backs that would make a stunning statement in any room! Outside there is a huge range of paving on display, a lovely pergola and architectural walls that have been clad with local and imported stone. In fact they have one of the largest natural stone collections in Cornwall and if it’s decking you want then they are stockists and certified installers of UPM Profi composite decking. Phil explains, "We install everything on display, inside and out, so you not only leave with the right product; but also the confidence that it will be installed correctly." Everything Stone are also accredited applicators and approved stockists for the Dry Treat range of sealants and cleaners, which offers the best stain protection for natural stone and can come with a 15-year performance warranty if they apply it... which sounds perfect for sorting out my rather old and stained stone patio!

TRELYON, UPPER FAL VALLEY
A DISTINCTIVE AND UNIQUE PROPERTY IN A STUNNING LOCATION In many respects this type of property epitomizes the spirit of Cornwall. Standing in grounds of over half an acre and perfectly positioned on the upper slopes of the Fal Valley “The Stack House” has a glorious backdrop and commands panoramic views. Built originally to house a Cornish Beam Engine it is a majestic building of substantial proportions with internal accommodation arranged over five floors. Originally converted in the early 20th Century and continually occupied since that time it has recently been refurbished and updated by the present owners and affords a versatile arrangement of accommodation of enormous character yet with every modern comfort. It is commonly believed the mine closed with very little profit for the stakeholders. There still exists a small quarry adjacent to the present structure but early maps show that this extended much further down in to the valley and has since been filled in. For much of the early 20th Century the property was known as the “Castle” and certain OS maps bear witness to this title. The building is Grade II Listed and a copy of the listing is available from the agents. The building has massive granite walls under a cement fibre tiled roof. The engine house chimney is tapered and truncated from its original form as it now terminates at ridge height. Windows are double glazed in UPVc for low maintenance and heating is provided by a number of high performance electric German radiators as well as a wood burner in the main living room and a multi fuel stove in the fourth floor snug.

hat is the worst news you’ve ever received? For me it was in 2012 when breast cancer was diagnosed. After noticing something unusual, I sought help from the surgeons in the Mermaid Centre, the Oncologists in the Sunrise Centre and the wonderful nurses in the Headland Centres. I had always feared cancer but in Cornwall we are so fortunate to have these specialist centres where I underwent chemotherapy, mastectomy and radiotherapy. Following these intensive treatments I was extremely relieved to be cancer-free. However, apart from follow up checks I felt rather abandoned; the odd twinge, swelling or even headache which didn’t normally merit a doctor’s appointment, I found I needed assurance that everything was still well. Help came from the local cancer charity, the Made for Life Foundation. They understood my feelings and, in a light-bulb moment, found the solution. Through this informal group I have gained everlasting friendships, reassurance and fun, that had been in short supply. We enjoy discussions (not always medical), informative talks,
craft days and marvellous pamper sessions. Made for Life is open to all cancer patients and it gives the props and stability required following the conveyer belt of treatment. This fantastic support lasts for however long you wish, but the friendships gained last forever. Made for Life has made my life! It is an inspired foundation and if one feels down or has problems there are hugsa-plenty offering comfort, support and understanding even when the cancer drama is over. Recently, I appeared on BBC and ITV news encouraging everyone to become aware of early diagnosis in order to survive. If anyone out there feels anything like I did please take advantage and contact Made for Life – I did.
