But sadly all good things come to an end, so we say goodbye to 771 Squadron and the wonderful ‘old ladies of the sky’, paying tribute to the fantastic work they have done in their 40 years based at RNAS Culdrose. They will be missed! And then, on to new beginnings at the start of another new year, we welcome the lovely, and very huggable Amanda Winwood, of Made for Life and Spiezia Organics, who takes on the mantle of writing our regular health and wellbeing column. Welcome Amanda! Discover more about Made for Life, our charity for 2016. Felix meets inspirational Olympic sailing hopeful Tom Phipps. We hear about extending your home with Carpenter Oak Cornwall, while Inspirational Interiors and Parks Interiors share some tips and hints on new trends for 2016. All this and some gorgeous properties to buy or dream about owning; we also recommend some places for holidays or short breaks. There’s our restaurant review – the Pandora, and a great recipe from the Ferryboat Inn. And there is the opportunity to support Cornwall Hospice Care with a fantastic champagne lunch on the Belmond British Pullman, sister to the Orient Express. So pour a cuppa, feet-up and relax and make plans for 2016!

Photographer Carla Regler’s stunning new gallery in Porthleven Anyone who has seen Cornwall Living’s fantastic calendar for 2016 will be familiar with the aweinspiring photography of Carla Regler. Carla has that unique knack for capturing a moment forever on film, so we were delighted to hear about her brand new gallery in Porthleven, showcasing more of her work. The new space complements her existing gallery above the much-loved kitchen-café, Seadrift, providing more room to champion other artists and photography she admires. Carla explains: “We were very lucky to come across another space in Porthleven after the photography took off so well above the café.” The new gallery is located on Chapel Terrace, just around the corner from Seadrift, stocking a range of photographic items for sale, from stunning prints, frames and canvasses, to photo mugs, clocks and coasters – ideal gifts. Here you’ll find wonderful imagery from Porthleven and the local areas, as well as images from Carla’s travels. A stitch in time The well-known phrase “a stitch in time” could not be more appropriate at this time of year with regard to reducing the risk of water penetration and dampness into all buildings, but particularly period and historic houses.

& Conservation, who specialise in working with period and historic buildings, will highlight the specific issues and recommend appropriate remedial methods, to bring your home back to its former glory!

Now that the leaves have fallen from the trees it’s essential to clear out gutters, valleys, downpipes and gulleys, as well as checking for any slipped or missing roof tiles or slates, all of which, if neglected, can lead to water getting to where it is not wanted.

www.courtdesign.co.uk

A small amount of time or expenditure at this stage could avoid expensive repairs and remedial works later. Some of the causes of dampness are not always obvious and may be due to the application of inappropriate materials and finishes, or poor maintenance. A celebration of Cornish producers and services

Expowest Cornwall takes place in Wadebridge from Tuesday 1st to Thursday 3rd March 2016. For more than three decades, this show has been the place where suppliers large and small showcase their latest products and services to Cornwall’s trade buyers. It’s perfectly timed and showcases products that cover the whole of the hospitality and catering market; from speciality food, to tableware and catering equipment, and business services. The show is an important social event, providing a hub where the whole Cornish business community gets together to enjoy the company of colleagues, suppliers and customers, while tasting and testing what’s new to enhance their businesses and kick start their season. What’s more, because so many come together all under one roof, this provides a superb opportunity for those outside the county to tap into the Cornish market.

Transform your kitchen in a few easy steps A brand new kitchen can transform the feel – and value – of an entire house. But it often comes with a hefty price tag. However, there is another way to get amazing results without the associated costs. Your kitchen may look a little dated perhaps, but the base and wall units, however, are invariably as solid as ever and an effective facelift can deliver outstanding results. This is where Dream Doors, based in Truro, comes in.

Dream Doors offers kitchen makeovers for a fraction of the cost of a new re-fit. By replacing the doors and drawer fronts, the team can transform your old kitchen and save you time, money and hassle. All doors are available with matching end panels, cornice, lighting pelmet and plinth. Dream Doors also offers worktops,

Saying farewell To the iconic red and grey Sea King helicopters and 771 Naval Air Squadron Search and Rescue (SAR).

W

è MAIN Practising a cliff-edge landing ì RIGHT Lieutenant Commander Andy Watts

e have become accustomed to, but definitely not blasé about, seeing and hearing the iconic red and grey Sea King helicopters around the coast of Cornwall. They have been spotted training on the cliffs, watched responding to flares out at sea, attended primary school fete days, featured in the press for their daring rescues in all weathers, and even seen giving Father Christmas a lift on Christmas morning! But they will soon be decommissioned and SAR will move from RNAS Culdrose to Bristows at Cornwall Airport Newquay. Typical of many Cornish companies, here at Cornwall Living we are a motley crew of sailors, surfers, walkers and even a coastguard; and we have a great deal of affection and respect for the old ladies of the sky and the fantastic work her crews do. So after over 40 years of dedicated service, 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year, we think it only right to say thank you and farewell to 771 SAR and the Sea King. As Leading Aircraft Engineer Tom Morris, one of the maintenance crew who keep the old ladies up in the air, tells me: “The people of Cornwall love SAR, everyone knows someone who we’ve helped; from a major rescue on a fishing boat, to an injured walker, or pregnant woman going into labour – we are always there to help.” I am invited out on a training session with a search and rescue crew (SARC), so duly arrive at RNAS Culdrose and meet the lovely Lieutenant Commander Andy Watts. He introduces me to the rest of the crew, two pilots: Lieutenant Commander Rick Boyes, and Lieutenant Phil Ross, winch-man and paramedic Petty Officer Craig Gabraitis and Andy as Observer and Commander of the SARC. They are a warm and welcoming bunch; mugs of tea quickly appear. While Andy goes off to check the weather conditions, Rick tells me a bit about the workings of the Squadron. “We work 24 hour shifts as a crew, we have beds here to

sleep when we can and meals are brought over to us, so we are always on hand in case of a call out. We will miss having Search and Rescue based here. Many of us have thousands of flying hours under our belts as part of the training and flying we do; far more than other pilots on the base. And, we get to fly in some pretty challenging conditions: high seas, in the dark, in a howling gale and rain can make for some interesting flying – but it’s a really fantastic experience for us.” Craig chips in: “And we are very much part of the local community, a link between the public and the Navy. Hopefully you’ll see the reaction we get if we fly.” The crew room is comfortable with sofas and armchairs, papers (including copies of Cornwall Living!) and a large TV that’s showing CNN quietly in the background; next-door is a large wellequipped kitchen.

Feature We all go through to the office for the briefing; one wall is covered in open shelves with each person’s gear ready and waiting: the large helmets, lifejackets and an immersion suit for when they have a rescue out at sea. Andy tells us that although the weather is forecast to get worse later we should be okay to go up at 10.30am until midday. The rest of the briefing follows with the two pilots deciding that Rick will take the right hand seat (the lead seat on most occasions as it’s the same side as the winch and door), the winch-man gives a quick update and Andy sums up that we will go for a training session round the coast, check out some of their landing spots and make a couple of practise landings. The Commander going off duty from the previous watch stays for the brief and gives his approval for the plan. Phil then nods at me and asks: “What if we get a shout while we are out and its out at sea?” Andy grins and says to me: “You better take some money and your mobile with you

just in case. If we do get a shout we may need to drop you somewhere and head off!” I am beginning to feel a bit nervous about flying anyway and now images of being stranded somewhere in west Cornwall fill my head. Rick kits up and goes to start the engines of our helicopter, which the maintenance crew have left ready for us. The crew can go from getting a shout to being airborne in 15 minutes and often less; six minutes is not unusual Phil tells me. We quietly get ready too; first the unbelievably heavy lifejacket, next the large and rather cumbersome helmet, then all is silent and will be until we plug the earphones in on-board. It really is eerie walking out on to the tarmac all togged up; the helicopter’s rotors are spinning and my heart’s thundering! Then I realise that this pre-flight routine is all part of the preparation for a real shout and that it’s really important to repeat it each time. That each of the four crew are quietly going

Tributes

“We are so honoured to have worked with 771 Squadron and feature their iconic Sea King helicopter. The exhibition was so popular we extended it another year!” Andy Wyke, National Maritime Museum “Without a doubt it’s going to be very sad to see the end of 771 Squadron… As sailors even just seeing them patrolling the coast has been a very comforting sight.” Toby Claridge, Senior Partner, Stephens Scown

“In August 2015 alone, 771 SAR took part in 47 rescues.”

Lieutenant Commander Andy Watts

Lieutenant Commander Rick Boyes

“As a keen yachtsman, I salute the amazing work of 771 Squadron... I will miss the sight of their distinctive livery up in the skies and bid them a very fond farewell.” James Staughton, Managing Director, St Austell Brewery

Petty Officer Craig Gabraitis

“Knowing they were just a few minutes flight away has given me and all Cornish boat owners an incredible feeling of reassurance should the worst happen. Their departure is like having our safety net taken away… they will be missed!” John Boyle, Shark Bay films, underwater cameraman and author

through their own thoughts: the weather conditions, where to land if fog comes in – checking things off their mental lists. Something Andy said earlier comes back to me; about how even though they can be up in six minutes, no-one rushes, it is all very calm and that allows thinking time, which means reckless mistakes are minimised. Onboard the interior rather gives away the elderly lady’s age; all the crew affectionately refer to the Sea King as the old lady. We taxi out and take off. And, of course, it’s

wonderful and exhilarating. My heart stops thundering and Craig swaps my seatbelt for a web belt attached to the roof of the helicopter. Then he opens the cargo doors and I see the Helford below us and join him at the cargo doors, where he sits happily with his legs over the edge while I kneel tentatively by the door, hanging on. We fly round the coast of west Cornwall at cliff height or a little below. They do three practise landings on tiny outcrops of cliff, Craig lying on his stomach looking out of the cargo doors guiding the pilot. “Rear rotor is clear, back wheel is down.” Andy is covering the pilot’s blind spots. “Ground rises on the left and rear, happy for you to take off to the right out to sea.” Then the cargo doors are closed and we fly up into the clouds so Rick can fly back blind guided by air traffic control at Culdrose. While flying with the cargo doors open it is wonderful to see just how many people wave: families on beaches, lone walkers with dogs, small groups and lots of children, all wave as they hear us approach and we wave back; the crew really get a big kick out of it. It’s clear that they, and their rather elderly, red and grey Sea Kings will be sorely missed.

revone is one of the most desirable bays in Cornwall, nestling between Padstow and the magnificent Trevose Head. The sandy beach is perfect for both surfers and families, while stunning clifftop paths lead to dramatic headlands, beaches and wooded valleys. The village itself has a beach store, shop and local pub. Nearby Padstow has an excellent range of local shops and fabulous restaurants including Rick Stein’s. There are lots of watersports facilities close by, plus the championship golf course at Trevose. The Camel Trail cycle path meanders its way along the banks of the Camel Estuary linking Padstow to Wadebridge. Trevoseen is a fabulous home designed to maximise the views over the coastline past Mother Ivey’s Bay and on out to sea. There is a real feeling of quality; oak and fine joinery partner with high quality fittings. The broad entrance hall entices you in with its view through the sitting room out to the spectacular coastline. There are French doors leading out to the sunny patio which is ideal for entertaining. Dare to dream Introducing Tom Phipps, a young hopeful from Mylor fighting to represent the British Sailing Team at the Olympics. words by:

Felix Rowe

“This is my favourite location. It’s where I’m home. I love kitesurfing, wake boarding – just to be by the water. It’s amazing to visit exotic locations across the world; but there’s no place better to be playing on the water than right here.”

I

t’s a pivotal moment for 26-yearold Tom Phipps, returning for a brief visit to his childhood home in Mylor, near Falmouth. Tomorrow, the young sailor heads back to the British Sailing Team’s base at Weymouth, before crossing the Atlantic, in attempt to seal his bid to be selected for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. We catch up over a cup of tea around a large wooden table in the farmhouse, perched on the gently sloping fields just above the riverbank as Mylor Creek opens out into The Carrick Roads. It’s a staggeringly arresting spot. The farm, home to the family’s sailing school, is a hive of activity; but rather than livestock, a flotilla of dinghies now takes pride of place on the fields outside. So, how does it feel to be home? As Tom looks out towards the water, the smile beaming across his face says it all. “This is my favourite location. It’s where I’m home. I try to get in the water every day – I love kite-surfing, wake boarding… just to be by the water.” He reflects for a moment. “It’s amazing to visit exotic locations across the world; but there’s no place better to be playing on the water than right here.” And who could disagree? Even on an overcast November morning, it’s magical. If ever we’ve been searching for the prime example of someone living the dream in Cornwall, then this is it! Tom knows these waters well. Like many aspiring sailors, Tom’s journey began in an optimist (or ‘oppy’ as they are affectionately

known): ‘Tom the bomb’ – a small dinghy, great for learning the ropes, though not exactly known for its speed. He started racing competitively soon after. “But I wanted to go faster!” he says. He also wanted to share the experience with a teammate, so pairing up with best friend Jon, he quickly moved onto multihulls aged ten, a partnership that flourished. The future was looking bright for the two Cornish lads who grew up together on the same stretch of water, now finding their feet on the world stage. Before long, Tom was racking up the silverware, winning ISAF (International Sailing Federation) Youth Gold medals in 2004 and 2006, and BBC South West Sports Personality of the Year 2006, giving up college around this time to prepare for the 2012 Olympics. The opportunity to represent his country on home turf (or should that be surf?) was there for the taking. And then the Olympic dream came crashing down, when the governing body excluded the catamaran class from the London games, effectively ending Tom’s hopes; a huge blow for the promising young sailor with big ideas. Momentarily devastated, Tom regrouped, and went back to his studies, graduating in Naval Architecture from Plymouth University, continuing to sail competitively whenever he could. Tom’s dreams were answered when the class was reinstated for Rio 2016. With Tom at the helm and a new teammate, Nicola Boniface, taking the ropes,

Real life story

he’s once again preparing for the big event. So what’s the team dynamic like? “It’s bit like a marriage!” he jokes. A partnership that gels properly is perhaps as important as the individual skill and physical mite of the sailors, particularly in a sport in which snap decisions need to be made and a wrong move can cost valuable seconds. Indeed, living in each other’s pockets and stuck on a small boat together for up to eight hours a day, there’s nowhere to hide. But it’s healthy – Tom, by his own admission, is the fiery character (not that you’d guess it from his affable presence), while Nikki is the more calm and collected of the two. Together, they are a formidable presence on the water. But it’s not plain sailing just yet; only one boat from this class will be selected. With at least two other big contenders battling for a coveted place, the future remains unwritten. Despite the

competitive nature, there’s a huge amount of camaraderie between rival teams. “We’ll go for a beer with each other afterwards, but when it comes to race morning, it’s pistols at dawn!” And with momentum on their side, Tom remains quietly confident that a place is within their grasp. They’re one of the younger teams; hungry for victory, with a point to prove. Not only do they have to be great sailors; they must also be great marketers and fundraisers too, in order to secure the sponsorship needed to keep their prospect alive. Tom’s effort to date has been realised largely thanks to a huge amount of local support. But it’s a catch 22; you need results to attract sponsorship, but to achieve those results, you need the sponsorship! And once the final team gets to Brazil, they’ll still potentially have to contend with Rio’s poor water quality, currently a big talking point. “Half the job will be dodging rubbish!” explains Tom. Real life story wrapped around the rudder could end a team’s hopes. While the Olympics is undoubtedly the pinnacle of a four-year cycle, it’s by no means an onshore sailor like Tom’s only chance for success on the world stage. With a whole host of regattas throughout the season, Tom is lucky to find a spare second for thought between March and October. Not that he minds. “It’s a privilege to travel

the world, doing what I love as a job, but also getting to meet interesting people too. It’s funny how the same faces pop over all over the place!” When not busy training or competing internationally, Tom helps out dad Brian at the sailing school, Windsport, back in Mylor. “The list of jobs to do never ends!” he explains. Tom is also trying his hand as an author; father and son are working together on an updated edition of Brian’s classic catamaran manual. As for Tom’s other interests? He loves music, playing his guitar when he gets the time (an increasingly rare commodity these days). Tom, ever keen to inspire others, is an enthusiastic ambassador for sailing. So, what should we do if we’d like to get involved? Simple. “Get in touch with your local sailing school – it’s a brilliant sport! Here in Cornwall, with our miles of coastline, worldclass sailing waters and beautiful rivers and creeks, there’s an incredible opportunity to do it, and it’s the most amazing experience.” At the time of writing, as we eagerly anticipate the Olympic selection announcement, Tom and Nikki aren’t simply awaiting their fate; they’re sailing out to it. So let’s wish them fair winds and calm seas on the journey to Rio!

n a s i t r a e f o The rise Celebrating the fine producers of food and drink in Cornwall.

H

ere in Cornwall, we’re proudly passionate about our food and drink. And with good reason too. In our completely impartial and objective view, it’s simply because we create some of the best produce that the UK has to offer! From the freshest fish, to award-winning rare bread meats; organic fruit and vegetables to delicious cheeses, chutneys and breads. We’re also at the forefront of a drinks revolution,

Freshly pressed

Helford Creek Apple Juices and Cyder are made on an 18th century farm near the Helford River, where 55 acres of ancient fields and woodland enjoy panoramic views across the valley. The small team of producers take the utmost care and attention in the production of their artisan products, made using traditional methods. It’s not just the taste that’s refreshing – it’s truly heart-warming to see a company dedicated to preserving traditional and local varieties of apples, all with wonderful names! “Our apple juices are unfiltered, pressed apples – no added water or sugar”, explains the farm’s Jem Trewhella. “Our medium sparkling cyder is made from Cornish apple varieties such as Manaccan Primrose and Pigs Snout. It’s sulphite free and fermented over an eight-month period to allow a secondary fermentation, before being bottled and labelled. It retains the taste and aroma of apples.”

HELFORD CREEK 01326 231341 www.helfordcreek.co.uk info@helfordcreek.co.uk

with wines from homegrown vineyards, scrumptious cider, and a varied selection of innovative craft breweries and distilleries on our doorstep. Every week in towns and villages across the county, artisan growers, producers and makers flock to farmers’ markets to showcase a wealth of fantastic fare. So, to celebrate these wonderful people keeping our taste buds satiated and bellies full, we’ve selected a few of our favourites.

Packed with flavour

Patnick’s Preserves is a fantastic example of an artisan producer, proud to be Cornish and championing big flavours and local ingredients that reflect the changing seasons. The stuff of

LEGEND Pandora Inn, an enchanting riverside pub at Restronguet Creek, proves the perfect remedy for a wet Sunday lunchtime.

I

ê BELOW The pontoon is a popular mooring spot for thirsty sailors

n 1791, a ship named HMS Pandora was shipwrecked off the Great Barrier Reef while on its way to capture the mutinous crew of the infamous Bounty. The surviving captain supposedly retired to Cornwall, becoming the landlord of a riverside pub, which now bears his ill-fated ship’s name. The Pandora Inn is tucked away in a serene spot on the south bank of Restronguet Creek, a tributary of The Carrick Roads. It’s an inspiring location; Olympic champion Ben Ainslie learnt to sail in and around these very waters. Legends aside, this thatched pub’s story begins much earlier, with parts of the building dating back to the 13th century. Sympathetically restored throughout, it has been extended and remodelled over the years, surviving flash floods and a devastating fire in the last decade alone – a

few chargrilled beams and photographs now the only testament to its plight. On our visit, we were in search of an altogether different bounty, namely the perfect Sunday lunch. A rare family day out with three generations, we yearned for a unique yet relaxed and informal setting – an atmosphere buzzing enough to withstand our two-year-old’s occasional public meltdowns without fearing the wrath of our fellow diners. With the rain unrelenting, the brief was no-nonsense, fantastic fare – food to warm the soul, as we warmed our feet. The Pandora ticked all boxes. Entering the sprawling listed building, with low beams above and flagstones below, character seeps from every nook and cranny. For those seeking a more formal experience, the first floor dining room, featuring a stunning oak vaulted ceiling and more river

n The Pandora Inn is beautifully situated on the banks of Restronguet Creek

views, is perfect. But for us, the roaring fire and bustling bar atmosphere beckoned, so we swiftly escaped the mizzle and set up camp around the warming embers. As is expected these days, the awardwinning Pandora prides itself on the wealth of local produce, whether the rare breed meats reared by Brian Etherington or fish from Stevenson in Newlyn, complemented by an extensive and considered wine list, including a selection from our favourite, Camel Valley. But for me, it had to be a pint of Proper Job – deliciously hoppy, the perfect accompaniment to a hearty meal. Starters included a winter vegetable soup – sure, nothing revolutionary, but a simple classic, done well – served with locally baked artisan olive focaccia. I opted for the chargrilled halloumi – rich and flavoursome, counterbalanced by the sweet beetroot dressing. The coriander and stem ginger fish cakes with garlic aioli were beautifully presented and, I’m informed, very tasty too! Onto the main event, we savoured the honest food, bursting with flavour, and generous portions – none of those delicately balanced miniature sculptures! The Sunday carvery offers a choice of two meats (on this occasion, succulent pork and wonderfully tender beef) and a vegetarian option, served with all the usual trimmings. The full a la carte menu is offered on Sundays too, and vegetarians are well

catered for with a genuine choice – the curry proved the perfect winter warmer. There’s a great kids’ menu – ours happily tucked into the crispy battered catch of the day, with thick cut chips, mushy peas and homemade tartar sauce (which could have fed a small family!). One downside of a restaurant packed to the rafters can be long waiting times and flustered looking staff, but thankfully this was never a concern. Throughout, the team were friendly, attentive and eager to please, without being too in-your-face. Needless to say, dessert was an indulgence rather than a necessity. Nevertheless, with a selection so tempting, it would’ve been rude not too! The rich chocolate fondant, orange ganache and pistachio ice cream was evidently popular judging by the constant flow from the kitchen. But the treacle tart, with berry compote and Rodda’s clotted cream, was a calling not to be resisted. The perfect end to a fantastic meal. The surrounding creeks and inlets of The Carrick Roads are waiting to be explored (by foot, cycle or boat), making The Pandora

the ideal spot to start or end your journey, whether working up an appetite or walking off your lunch! And it really comes alive over the summer, with craft of all shapes mooring up at the private pontoon to enjoy food and drink, quite literally, on the water. (Note to self for 2016: Buy boat. Point in direction of Pandora. Start paddling!)

The ultimate

CURE

Fed up of turkey leftovers? Enjoy this delicious fish dish to bring in the New Year, from The Ferryboat Inn on the Helford River. “This dish is always on the menu, but we change the cure depending on the season”, explains Robert Bunny, Head Chef of The Ferryboat Inn. “So why not have a go and experiment with different flavours – we do gravadlax, cucumber and Tarquin’s Gin, curry cured, and also seaweed cured. It’s a great dish for this time of year and the salmon and bread will keep for a while. When the breads starting to get too dry, slice thinly, dry out in the oven and use as crackers with cheese and the leftover salmon.”

Elanora, Carbis Bay

With its golden sands and turquoise sea, Carbis Bay is recognised as one of the most beautiful bays in the world. It’s often selected as the perfect base for those wanting to relax and get away from it all while having the convenience of being just minutes away from the hustle and bustle of St Ives. With its Blue Flag accredited beach, Carbis Bay is a popular choice for a

luxury self-catering holiday, with many special escapes having dramatic sea views. The coastal railway links St Ives to Penzance and is perhaps one of the most scenic rail journeys in the UK. The rail journey from Carbis Bay to St Ives takes about four minutes and also connects to St Erth and Penzance to mainline UK stations including Paddington, London. Elanora takes its name from the aborigine for ‘home by the sea’ and it has been aptly named; this stunning first floor apartment at the popular Barepta Cove Apartments in Carbis Bay has floor-toceiling windows in the living area and French doors in the master bedroom that showcase the panoramic views of St Ives Bay. You’re a short walk from the beach and have direct access onto the coastal path, perfect for exploring this beautiful stretch of coastline. This bright apartment has been stylishly decorated with Calligaris Italian designer furnishings throughout. Sit back in one of the luxurious leather sofas and gaze at the seaside scenes before you wander onto the balcony and enjoy an alfresco drink. 01736 630015 www.carbisbayholidays.co.uk

Lighthouse View is a newly renovated chalet-style beach house at Gwithian Towans, with clear views of St Ives Bay and the iconic Godrevy lighthouse, as well as direct access to miles of beautiful beaches and sweeping sand dunes. The enclosed garden is perfect for children and four-legged friends, and barbeques watching the sun set over the bay. Lighthouse View beach house sleeps four in two delightful bedrooms, both very comfy. The sumptuous master room with its king sized bed as well as the light and friendly living room and dining room share dramatic sea views. The owners here love to cook, so you’ll find the kitchen very well appointed, making Lighthouse View a great place for family entertaining. A modern bathroom with shower completes the accommodation. The beaches of Gwithian and Godrevy are among the best in Cornwall and are right on your doorstep. There are safe lifeguarded zones from May to September, as well as large rock pools at low tide, inviting exploration. Guests here reguarly spot seals and

sometimes dolphins. And in autumn and winter the surf and seascape are truly unforgettable. But with Lighthouse View, the chalet is as memorable as the place. It’s a delight, decorated in a carefree beachy style, with thoughtful little touches everywhere you look. You can tell the owners cherish it – and we are sure you’ll love it too. 01209 832848 www.forevercornwall.co.uk

Out & About

Out & About

Frankfurt calling Where will you discover on your travels from Cornwall Airport Newquay in 2016?

W

ith Ryanair operating a new direct route from Cornwall Airport Newquay to Frankfurt-Hahn, starting in April 2016, we’ve spoken to some locals asking them to share their top tips and insider hints for unearthing the hidden gems that this little known but stunningly beautiful region has to offer. About an hour and a half from the industrial city of Frankfurt, Frankfurt-Hahn Airport is actually hidden away in the forests of the Hunsrück region, an area of rolling hills famous for its hiking and cycling, cultural and ancient sites. As you travel around the region the castles sitting along the hilltops become almost common place with one roughly every mile and a half across the entire wider region of Rhineland-Palatinate. As a taster, we’ve selected three things to do within a half-hour’s drive from the Airport.

Balduinseck Castle This beautiful ruin of an ancient castle has recently re-opened to the public after a sixyear closure for refurbishment. It is situated in the middle of the Hunsrück, close to the city of Kastellaun. Insider Tip: Take some lunch with you, because as you walk up the stairs that guide you to the castle you will find a great picnic area with seating, right in front of the old brick walls. The view from here is stunning! Hiking through a gorge The Ehrbach Valley offers some exciting hiking because of the diversity of the trail. The 8-mile hike will take about 4 hours, through small paths, over boulders and across little bridges. Insider Tip: Take a detour to the beautiful Ehrenburg castle, which can be reached by foot from the trail. Exploring the Moselle The Moselle River is lined with pretty towns; Bernastel-Kues, Traben-Trarbach and Cochem might be the most famous but the tiny city of Beilstein is also very popular, and certainly worth a visit. Insider Tip: Drive to the next city called Briedern, park there and look for the hiking signs ‘Briederner Schweiz’. The trail leads you up the hill, but don’t worry – it’s a short steep climb and after that the path levels out and is easy and flat. It will take you a relaxing 90 minutes with stunning Moselle views, then you arrive at the castle of the city Beilstein.

Walks

CADGWITH & POLTESCO A fairly easy, picturesque walk with a great pub. This walk is 2.6 miles.

A

walk over tranquil heathland affording spectacular views between two picturesque fishing coves still displaying the pilchard cellars and capstan houses of their bustling past. A colourful shingle beach (formed of pink granite, banded gneiss, and red and green serpentines) at Carleon Cove dams a small pool where trout can be seen jumping to catch flies. 150 years ago, however, this same spot would have been a hive of industry with a factory making fashionable polished stoneware. This walk is particularly good for dogs as it passes a beach and pub where dogs are welcome. An hourly bus service from Helston serves both ends of the route, so why not leave the car behind for the day? The Coast Path passes through spectacular cliffland managed for wildlife with the help of some four-legged friends: The National Trust has Shetland ponies who help to keep the cliffs above Poltesco in tip top condition for a host of rare species, including tiny dwarf rush and twin headed clover. Look out for heath spotted and early purple orchids. 1. In the car park in Ruan Minor take the path beside the village hall, turning right on the road and then bear left after the corner shop.

2. After the village shop, carry on ahead beside the chapel to take the footpath dropping downhill, crossing the footbridge and continuing along the path to come out on the road beyond. 3. Turn left on the road, go over the bridge, and then take the footpath on the left a moment later, going through the gate to follow the path along the hedge and past the car park down to Cadgwith. 4. Turn left to walk through Cadgwith and uphill to Corner House. Turn right to follow the South West Coast Path. Go past the old lookout hut and along the path worn by centuries of walkers to the stile at the top. Crossing it, follow the right hand hedge, taking another stile to carry on uphill to the headland above Kildown Cove. 5. Carry on along the Coast Path past Enys Head, turning right after the kissing gate to drop gently downhill to Poltesco. 6. As the path descends to Poltesco, turn right down the steps and cross the bridge to take the path on the right for a gentle tour of the remains of the serpentine works. 7. Follow the path through the remains of the serpentine works and on to the beach. Walk up the rock slipway passing the Capstan House to join the Coast Path above. Turn left downhill, past the old forge and back to the bridge. Climb the steps and turn right up the path, past Carleon House (built in 1861 for the factory manager) and follow the track over another wooden bridge to join a lane heading left. 8. Turn left again opposite Poltesco House and follow the lane (Poltesco Lane) over the bridge, past the mill and steeply uphill past Millstone Cottage. Turn right at the parish noticeboard and return to the car park.

MODERN CLASSICS For fine dining with a difference in Penzance, enjoy the award-winning Senara experience at Penwith campus.

W

ith an AA Rosette under its belt, a host of talented chefs at the helm and alumni progressing on to work at the south west’s top eateries, Senara is not your average college training restaurant. As one of the top restaurants in Penzance, Penwith College’s Senara is renowned for its incredible food and service. It may be a training kitchen for their Professional Cookery students, but that hasn’t stopped it receiving a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence. Plus, its recent accolade of an AA College Rosette of the highest available level confirms the high standard of both the kitchen environment and that all-important dining experience. So what makes Senara different? Penwith College’s Head of Professional Cookery and Hospitality, Jaime Gaspare, who has over 22 years’ experience working in restaurants across London, as well as at Fifteen Cornwall, explains: “The plan for Senara was always to create an environment that was classic, modern and light. We wanted this to reflect the type of food we like to cook and the menus we like to see. The restaurant had to be a model of somewhere the students would like to work, would take pride in and relate to in an aspirational way.” Jaime continues: “The menus are written

daily and they change depending on what is available and in season. We encourage our students to be part of the menu writing process – therefore always thinking about what fish, meat and vegetables are around, is it priced well and what flavours work well together.” “The delivery team here at Penwith College are all industry based; none of them came to us as catering college lecturers. They all came here as chefs, food and beverage managers, sommeliers, baristas, brewers and hoteliers. The team we have is outstanding, with huge, varied experience and incredible expertise.” With an approach like this, no doubt it won’t be long before Senara will be adding to its collection of awards. Enjoy the Senara experience yourself. The restaurant is open Tuesday to Friday from 122pm and Friday nights from 7pm. Booking is recommended to avoid disappointment.

Celebrating 15 years of making people smile

Ask Mark Durnall, Principal at Pure Dental Health about Dental Implants… What are Dental Implants?

They’re a great treatment for replacing missing or failing teeth, and securing loose dentures. Implants can be used to replace a single tooth, multiple teeth, even the complete replacement of all teeth. A titanium implant replaces the root of the natural tooth. The implant is then used to anchor replacement teeth like crowns, bridges or dentures.

What are the advantages?

Enjoy 50% off new patient consultations

For many people their permanence, durability, and natural appearance and feel mean greatly increased self-esteem and confidence.

Can anyone have an Implant?

Not everyone is suitable, but the majority are. They are not just for Hollywood stars and often more affordable than most people think.

Also £100 off any cosmetic dentistry required

How long will an Implant last?

If good oral hygiene is maintained, with regular brushing, flossing and dental visits then implants can last a long time, even a lifetime.

New Year, new you Resolve to be resolute. Kick start 2016 with our new health and wellbeing page by Amanda Winwood, of Made For Life by Spiezia Organics.

é MAIN Amanda Winwood, Managing Director of Made For Life by Spiezia Organics

T

he New Year has been recognised for centuries as an opportunity to start anew. Unfortunately less than 10% of us achieve the goals we set. Why? Firstly, most people set overwhelming and complex goals rather than thinking what really matters to them. So here are some handy hints to ensure you keep your resolution if you make one: 1. This is about you! Don’t think about anyone else’s views. Think about how it will be for you when you achieve your goal. 2. If you have more than one goal, don’t overload – for example, if your aim is to lose weight and get fit, plan how you will integrate the two. 3. Pre-commitment is the key. Plan how you’ll achieve your goal and write down how you will achieve the goal. Planning is essential. 4. Making changes takes willpower. Will power is like a muscle. Exercise it regularly and it becomes stronger. This enhances your chances of achieving your goals. If you’re into improving your health then don’t just join a gym and go along on your own. Meet with friends; sign up to have a personal trainer help you. There are a number of excellent trainers who will help kick start your new habit and support you. Cornwall is a fantastic place to improve your wellbeing with a wealth of activities and opportunities both on land and sea to

help you physically and mentally, whether you take up yoga, running or surfing. Banish winter skin blues Your skin reflects your state of health and wellbeing. In winter, the skin is covered up and doesn’t get the same chance to breathe. Dry heat in houses, offices and cars also means the skin gets dehydrated, leaving us and our skin looking sluggish instead of bright and shining. Top skincare tips: 1. Bodybrush once a week to stimulate vascular blood circulation and lymphatic drainage and remove dead skin cells leaving skin soft and smooth 2. Exfoliate the face once a week to freshen up the complexion 3. Moisturise hands and face to provide protection and soothe and nourish 4. Eat well with lots of fresh vegetables and fruit in your diet (organic and locally grown ideally) 5. Remember to drink water – warm herbal teas are great to ensure hydration

Health

Going Private Considering the benefits of private treatment at Duchy Hospital.

W

hen Duchy Hospital opened it was entirely private. All patients paid for their treatment, either with medical insurance or their own funds. But more recently, it has begun to take NHS patients too. Why, then, is it worth paying for your treatment to go to the same hospital? In essence, paying for your treatment means that you are treated at your convenience rather than to fit in with the NHS. Private patients can choose when they have their treatment, which can make a real difference. For some this simply means being seen as quickly as possible – in some cases being seen by a consultant on the same day as being contacted. One patient, Mr Peter Fittock, explains the peace of mind that this gave him: “It was an urgent consultation at my instigation and I was dealt with in a understanding and very prompt manner which gave me much comfort at a difficult time.” For others it’s simply about being able to choose a time which fits into their lifestyle. Perhaps you want to be treated in good time to be able to recover from your operation for a special event like a wedding or a holiday. Others find that due to work commitments, the uncertainty of when they will get their appointment or operation causes problems, especially for those who run their own business.

Private patients can also choose the consultant they wish to see. NHS patients are not always given a choice of consultant, or they may be treated by a member of a consultant’s team rather than the named consultant. Private patients also benefit from the assistance of Duchy Hospital’s Private Patient Account Manager, Miranda Field. “We understand that coming into hospital can be a stressful and worrying time”, explains Miranda. “Our aim is to make it as easy and straightforward as we can. We’ll support you with every stage of care, from referral to discharge. This includes helping you deal with your medical insurance, arranging transport, to making sure a copy of your favourite newspaper is delivered to your room during your stay.” Private healthcare enables choice, convenience and an experience designed around you and your needs. And it’s more affordable that you may think. Duchy Hospital offers fixed cost care for many treatments giving a total price for treatment without any unexpected extras. Interest free finance is also available to spread the cost.

hen each new year arrives, the decorations come down and things can seem a little more dreary than before the festive season. So rather than making impossible to keep resolutions this year, why not set yourself design and decorating goals for the months ahead? Does 1st January inspire you to make a fresh start in your home? January is often a time of year when the Christmas bills are dropping on the doormat and planning design projects can seem daunting. However, it doesn’t have to cost the earth; great design and affordable style can go hand in hand. So instead of giving up any hope of redecorating in the new year, now is the time to make a plan for a designfabulous 2016. With this in mind, we caught up with Sue from Inspirational Interiors, to pick her brains on the subject. Inspirational Interiors supplies a wide range of products to suit all tastes and budgets. Sue has shared a few tips and ideas for setting practical yet fabulous decorating goals. “Cushions and throws can transform a

simple plain sofa; drape a length of striped fabric over the back and throw on some vibrant cushions to get the wow factor.” The other great thing about statement cushions and throws is that you can change the feel and mood of a room easily – perhaps varying the palette or textures according to season – without the need for a complete overhaul of the room. “Instantly transform your space simply with the introduction of creative curtains, beautiful blinds or stunning shutters.” Inspirational Interiors’ shutters are individually handcrafted from the finest materials. With a wide range of options and colours, your shutters will be completely unique to your home. They’re immensely practical too – they’re extremely durable and easy to maintain, allowing you to control the amount of light coming into your. They look fantastic on sash and bay windows too! “Turn an attic space into a cosy snug”, suggests Sue, “which can easily double up as a home office or guest bedroom.” Admittedly, a loft conversion could entail a bit more work (and expense) than simply

68 Cornwall LIVING CLM 42--ED--Inspirational Interiors.indd 2

22/12/2015 15:32

adding new cushions or curtains. But the extra investment really can pay dividends, sometimes adding thousands to the value of your home, and making it more attractive to future buyers. If you need a bit of advice choosing fabrics or styles that complement the style of your home or holiday let, or simply if you don’t personally have the time in your busy schedule to devote to interior renovation, why not take the stress off your hands? Inspirational Interiors has a friendly, interior design, production and fitting service. Sue and the team are always happy to use their knowhow to make any space dazzle like it really should! “I trust the new year brings you many opportunities to set and achieve your design goals”, says Sue. “May 2016 give you that fresh start to get your creativity flowing.”

ere at Cornwall Living we like to buy local and support local businesses whenever possible and reasonable! There are always some times when you just have to go to one of the multinationals but, more often than not, there is a wonderful Cornish company delivering excellent service locally to visit. And never more so than with household electrical goods. I had heard excellent reports about HBH Woolacotts, a family run, independent Cornish business; so arranged to meet up with Director Chris Hemmerle at their St Austell superstore. The first thing that hits you is the sheer size

of the store, their biggest yet, with a huge range of top brand products on display, many of them powered up and ready to try out, whether it’s a new laptop, vacuum cleaner, audio system, dishwasher or home cinema system. It’s a real wonderland full of the latest technology and for those of us who are a bit picky about our music and entertainment systems a real buyer’s dream, and it's all beautifully laid out. The friendly staff will happily show you various systems and talk you through what might best suit you and your wallet. I loved the variety of home cinema set-ups on display and was truly impressed with the staff’s

understanding of the technology. For the budding chefs amongst us they also host a wide range of great cooking demonstrations to help you get the best from your new kitchen appliances. Chris showed me round. “I know it’s a bit clichéd these days, but we really are a family run, independent, Cornish business. 2016 is our 40th anniversary and a lot of our new business comes from local recommendation; our reputation in Cornwall is extremely important to us. So we all have a really strong focus on delivering outstanding customer service, before, during and after you buy!” Chris explained with a smile. “We have friendly, knowledgeable staff who really know their stuff and can help you choose just the right product. And all our products are set up in store ready to be used, so our customers really can see and try everything before they buy.” They offer a free delivery and installation service on all major purchases. Follow up service is also very important; they have a fully trained team of workshop based and field engineers who can service the majority

of things. Which, in today’s throwaway society, is a very important aspect when considering the sustainability and green credentials of a new electrical appliance. “We really have tried to think of everything from our customers’ perspective. We have eight branches all with individual contact details. So if you need advice or are having a problem there is always someone available locally to help, whether in store or on the phone” Chris adds emphatically. “No call centres for us!” At the new St Austell store there is even a coffee lounge so you can relax, talk through the various options and decide on the right appliance for you. As Chris explains: “We realise that buying a brand new TV or kitchen appliance can be a very important and difficult decision; we are onhand to offer honest, friendly advice so you find the products that are right for you. It's why so many of our customers keep coming back to us!”

Warming whites

We catch up with Gary Parks of Parks Interiors who gives his top tips on interior trends for 2016.

W

hite and shades of off-white are predicted to be the colour trend of the year in 2016 for your home interior projects, with many home furniture and paint companies featuring statement, achromatic palettes in their new collections. Parks Interiors in Truro share with us the essentials of creating a calm and soothing bedroom space using a soothing palette of off-whites combined with natural materials and layers of texture for added warmth. Based in the heart of Cornwall, Parks have everything you need to create the perfect blend of style and functionality in your home. So much more than white... Owner Gary Parks tells us: “Combining different shades of white can create a stunning and luxurious look for your new bedroom and other rooms in your home. The trick is balancing that with texture and warmth from natural materials, accent colours and lighting to give a welcoming ambiance rather than a cold, uninviting scene.” “We are seeing the introduction of bold textures to white finishes for both bedroom and kitchen furniture”, explains Gary, “which adds subtle yet effective depth and warmth to the finished look. Beautiful natural wood grain and knots are being emphasised on popular painted finishes, which can be customised in an array of white, off-white and taupe shades. Using a combination of white tones, rather than white washing the whole room, enhances decorative details such as coving or alcoves and adds dimension.” He also shares that combining whites with natural materials such as warm woods, chunky knitted furnishings, wicker and exposed stone or wooden beams adds layers of comfort and texture

for a relaxing, rustic charm. By contrast, high-gloss finishes are a great choice if you want a sleek, contemporary look, such as the gorgeous glide of a glossy white, sliding wardrobe to neatly store away crisply ironed shirts and all those essential shoes! Accent colours Another tip the Parks team recommend is adding a pop of colour with an accent to bring the white to life. For bedrooms, this could be a statement headboard, piece of furniture or soft furnishings, for example. Designing your room When revamping your home interiors, bedrooms often come second place to a sparkling new bathroom or kitchen. As we spend over a third of our lives in our bedrooms, Parks say they take great pride in making it into something special. Gary comments: “Designing a new bedroom may seem daunting; complicated by unusual layouts or alcoves, then choosing the right colours and styles, storage and furniture that will work well together. That’s why we offer a free design visit, where you can draw on our expertise to create the best solution for your space, lifestyle and personal taste.” Parks stock an extensive range of bedroom solutions by top brands such as Neptune and Hepplewhite fitted furniture. Visit their Truro showroom to see the full range for yourself and book your free design visit on the new website: www.parksinteriors.co.uk.

Property

Light and

space

The team from Carpenter Oak Cornwall explain how an affordable oak frame extension can transform a property, with stunning results.

I

t’s truly amazing what can be achieved to lift an older building, breathing new life into the space. A 1960s bungalow in the west of Cornwall has been transformed by the addition of a contemporary oak framed kitchen extension that has turned a dark and dated part of the house into a lively, light space. And all within a tight budget. Replacing the rotting single glazed lean-to at the rear of the property was an obvious choice for Tim and his wife Katie, as the new owners of the bungalow in Carbis Bay. The design brief was to spend as little money as possible, while creating a showpiece kitchen-diner using an oak frame structure with fixed glazing, finished with white walls and work surfaces and a bold splash of colour. “The room lifts the feel of the whole house,” says Katie. “In our street – which is full of bungalows – you wouldn’t expect this kind of traditional quality. The extension really makes it a more solid feeling home.”

ê BELOW Quality bespoke oak frame and glazing

Tim leads the team at Carpenter Oak Cornwall, a new and innovative local company with a well-earned reputation behind them. Offering a bespoke design service, oak frame manufacture, glazing and project management service, progress on a small build like Tim’s can be swift. Carpenter Oak Cornwall has an in-house frame designer, Tom Jubb, who works with clients to design a frame to fit their own brief, however Tim did the design himself for his extension. Tim also did the carpentry, glazing and blockwork, as well as all his own kitchen fitting, plastering, roofing and plumbing, to keep the costs down. “For clients in Cornwall I can use my experience of building to project manage our jobs – we are able to get builders we have a relationship with to price for projects that use our frames, so clients know the whole project is being managed,” explains Tim. “Tim’s aim was to ‘walk his talk’ and showcase just what can be done on a modest budget. This frame demonstrates just how versatile oak frame construction can be,” adds Tom. To save costs Tim kept the design simple. Using the same footprint as the original lean-to but increasing the pitch of the roof enabled him to increase the volume of space, and installing Velux windows maximised the natural light entering the new kitchen. “It was a dark square before and didn’t

get any natural daylight. Now the early morning sun comes through the Velux windows and hits the back wall of the kitchen – it’s the most peaceful space. Light floods in all morning until about three in the afternoon, it’s just lovely,” says Katie. Even the children love the new space, particularly the wide oak sills at the back of the worktop where they sit to watch Katie cooking. “The kids love playing on the kitchen steps and sitting on the oak along the bottom of the window – it is going to develop a lovely patina where they have been sitting!” The green oak frame was produced in the Carpenter Oak Cornwall workshop in Lelant, while the ground works were being carried out on site. The frame was then erected on site and the project was completed on time and within budget in just two months. “When we set up Carpenter Oak Cornwall we had a vision that clients would be able to deal directly with the carpenters and designers who actually create and build these spaces”, says Carpenter Oak Director Stuart Voaden. “And we love the fact that Tim has now built one for his own family and is now even better placed to pass his experience on to others.”

Feel

the warmth

Enjoy both style and substance with these innovative infraredheating solutions from Redwell.

T

he heating of our homes is a funny thing; it’s something we so often take for granted, yet miss desperately if it’s not working. And as for traditional radiators, well, they may keep us warm but – from a design point of view – they’re not exactly always the most attractive things, especially when coupled with unsightly pipes running through the house. They can also take up lots of room, making it difficult to place furniture. So, when we heard about a pioneering solution from Redwell using infrared heat, we had to learn some more about its many other benefits. Infrared is a modern, innovative way to heat your property. Visually appealing, and space saving, it’s flexible too: freestanding, wall, or ceiling mounted, and available in a wide range of shapes and sizes to suit your room.

21/12/2015 17:16

ABOVE & LEFT The Redwell heating system can stylishly incorporate any image of your choice

What is infrared? Infrared is all around us and is 100% safe. The warming effect of the sun on your face even on a cold winter’s day is the natural healthy heat that Redwell recreates. Infrared is used extensively in a variety of environments including healthcare, and is widely recognised as providing benefits such as muscle relaxing in physiotherapy, or the warming of babies when in intensive care. Unlike conventional heating systems that create hot air to warm a room, infrared heats the very fabric of the building and the objects within. These release the warmth into the space creating an even, comfortable environment, banishing cold spots and uneven warmth. The process is 100% energy efficient, delivering significant cost saving benefits and allowing a healthy, efficient and maintenance-free solution. Dust and allergens are not circulated in warm air streams, and dry room air is no longer a problem. Infrared also promotes a reduction of condensation and mould. If the walls are warmer, there’s less

opportunity for moisture related problems. Redwell heating panels can be mounted on the ceiling or walls, so floor area is not lost. Design your space to suit rather than letting conventional radiators dictate your living area. Raising up a Redwell panel in child friendly environments is one example of the system’s flexibility. Efficiency and benefits As Redwell panels require less power output to provide the same level of thermal comfort, they’re more cost effective than electrical convection methods, producing a saving on running costs of around 55% compared to modern electric systems. Users can benefit from large energy savings over the lifespan of a property. Consider 24-hour thermal comfort when using infrared. Reducing the cycles between heating up a space means that the system ‘tops up’ rather than heating a space from scratch using hot air, contributing to the overall energy efficiency. Geraldine, who installed a complete Redwell system within her 3-bedroom home, says: “Redwell heating is quite the best heating I have ever experienced. Positioning the panels on the ceiling has meant all walls are free for pictures, books and furniture. Because heat is radiated downwards it feels like the warm rays of the sun with no chance of accidentally burning oneself in front of a fire or hot radiator. All rooms are individually controlled by hour and by day and all can be adjusted by a central controller and by an app should you so wish. Just plug and go – brilliant!”

Who is Redwell?

Going green Join the growing number of customers benefiting from a renewable heating solution by enquiring with GreenGenUK today.

W

ith the cost of traditional heating fuels continuously on the rise, more people are considering renewable alternatives as a way to reduce their heating bills. But what people may not know is that the benefits of going green with a renewable heating solution don’t stop at energy savings. Speaking from their experience of installing renewable heat solutions, GreenGen note that installing one of their renewable alternatives will lower annual heating costs by as much as 50 percent, depending on which solution the customer opts for and which system is being replaced. But the financial benefits don’t end there. The Renewable Heat Incentive is a government-led scheme available to customers switching to a renewable heat technology, be it a heat pump, a biomass boiler or a solar thermal system. Known more commonly as the RHI, the scheme pays customers for each unit of renewable heat generated by their system, over a seven-year period. In effect, customers will be paid for replacing generation from harmful fossil fuels with an environmentally friendly renewable alternative. RHI payments make renewable solutions more than a means to lower energy bills. When combined with the energy saving benefits, these payments can make installations cost neutral. GreenGenUK regularly see their renewable heating

installations repay themselves within the seven-year RHI period. Be it an air source heat pump or a biomass boiler, all GreenGen’s heating solutions are eligible for RHI payments and their MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) accreditation and abidance to the Renewable Energy Consumer Code ensures customers receive only the highest quality technologies and workmanship standards. GreenGen offer free surveys and proposals to all customers in Cornwall and the south west. GreenGen’s experienced and professional surveyors only put forward the most well-suited and financially beneficial solutions to their customers, placing the knowledge in their hands and ensuring an informed decision can be made. All customers taking them up on their free survey offering are guaranteed of no on-theday selling. Give them a call today or book your free survey to see the potential benefits of installing a renewable heating technology for your home or business.

Advice

e g a m i f o e g n A c ha Is the juice worth the squeeze? We take a look at the pros and cons of equity release.

O

k, we admit it, equity release is hardly the most exciting subject. But raising funds out of your home can be a great and practical way to secure quick cash if you’re considering home improvements or that once-in-a-lifetime trip. Yet while popularity for the product is growing, plenty remain on the fence. So is it safe? And is it really a win-win? First things first – is it still really the same product? Traditionally, a finance company would buy a stake in your home, in return for a hefty chunk of cash, waiting until you passed away or sold the house before getting a return; any profit would come from the interest gained on the house over the years. Today, it’s run a little differently, with most equity release products based on the lifetime mortgage model: You’ll still own the house but it’s kept as a security, just like a normal mortgage. And just like a normal mortgage, you’ll have to pay interest on the loan. But the thing is, the mortgage term only ends when you die, effectively meaning that the estate pays back the money, not you. Interest rates are typically higher; staying fixed but charged on an increasing sum, continually added to your debt. Because of this, it’s always best to take out a lifetime mortgage later on in life. A compound mortgage, if not researched and understood properly, can take you by surprise. The way that the debt will build up needs to be clear from the start. The pricey nature of the interest is down to three things:

é ABOVE St Mawes

house prices, interest rates and how long you’ll live. So what’s the risk? You, as the homeowner, are unlikely to feel any negative repercussions from equity release; the inheritance will bear the brunt of the borrowing. If you have no children, and no one to inherit your property, it’s a win-win. When you pass away the property goes to the financial company and any debt is written off. While the cumulating debt can be a serious worry for some, lifetime mortgage providers argue that the rising house prices offset the interest owed through equity. Equity release is well regulated and can be a safe and beneficial option for many. Essentially, like most things in life, it’s all about achieving the right balance – weighing the added benefits enjoyed in your lifetime against any potential limitations placed on future generations. The key is getting decent, impartial and professional advice from the experts, so that you can make informed decisions. Financial advisers like Harris Begley know the industry, understand the pitfalls, and can help to create a bespoke solution completely tailored to you.

e can’t resist a good story and Made for Life has plenty – some that are heart-warming and uplifting and some unutterably sad; hopefully over the coming year we will share just a few of those stories with you. Established in 2008 by Amanda Winwood and her team, the Made for Life Foundation provides help and support for those going through cancer and post cancer. And to date over 6,000 people including carers and family have benefited from their unique workshops and events that are held across the UK. They pride themselves on being there for anyone at any stage of their cancer journey, from recent diagnosis to post treatment and everything in between. The charity organise wonderful monthly workshops filled with an eclectic mix of nutritional advice, Reiki, yoga, integrative holistic treatments including meditation and art therapy. These days are extremely popular as not only are they great fun but they are a time to connect, share and have hugs. Juliette Hathway, Manager of the Made for Life Foundation, tells me: “You might want to pop in for a cup of tea and a chat after a visit to the hospital or spend time with a group of people going through a

similar time. The team are here to provide that all important emotional support as well as advice to help you find your way through cancer, and we are always ready with a hug! Our spa room is a haven of cloud soft towels, deep, vibrant purples and utter peace.
