THE ULTIMATE GUIDE FROM
T
he Camel Estuary and surrounding area is one of Cornwall’s coastal gems. Boasting no less than seven bays (that we discover from page 50), some lovely historic harbours, all surrounded by lush countryside, this a place where you can discover new things to see and do over and over again. It’s a fantastic place to visit for a day, a week or longer – you may well want to stay forever! With that in mind, we begin our tour of the Camel Estuary with a look at buying property in this much sought-after area, from page 20. If now’s not the right time for you to buy, then you won’t find a much better place to spend your holiday. With some fantastic places to stay, from self-catering cottages to luxury caravans, there’s really no need to look any further afield. The Camel Estuary is not just a great place to visit, however; it’s famed as a foodie destination, too! Rick Stein has put Padstow firmly on the culinary map, as well as many other neighbouring chefs who are taking Cornish produce to a whole new dimension. Turn to page 48 to find out about some great restaurants in the area that you’re sure to love. We’ve also been hearing from some great businesses across the Camel Estuary, which we have collated in our area guides from page 30. With all this to discover, why not sit back, relax and dive into our guide to the Camel Estuary. Happy reading!

KEEP IN THE LOOP AT WWW.CORNWALL-LIVING.CO.UK
Top canine care tips If you’re planning a day out, Cornwall’s Dog Welfare Team stress the importance of checking whether dogs are welcome. If they’re not, make sure to arrange a pet sitter or kennels, or perhaps choose an alternative dog-friendly attraction. This goes for beaches too – while many are dog friendly throughout the year, there are also many that have bans in place over the summer. Dog waste can be disposed of in any street litter bin in Cornwall and does not have to be specifically placed in a dog poo bin. If there’s not one close by then take the bag home – there’s nothing worse than littering with both plastic and poo! In summer, as well as ensuring they have
access to water throughout the day, it’s often best to walk your dog early in the morning or late in the evening when temperatures are cooler, reducing the risk of heatstroke. For more information call 03001 234212 or visit www.cornwall.gov.uk/ environment-and-planning
Rest and refresh at
The Cornish Arms, Pendoggett
Proud owners of this superb establishment between Port Isaac and Tintagel, Geoff and Karen Dennison ensure a warm welcome awaits all those who pay this pre-16th century pub a visit, including dogs! Superbly located for a pitstop after exploring the local area, the Cornish Arms offers freshly prepared, traditional pub food, made, wherever possible, with local ingredients. Served every lunchtime and evening, the menu is complemented by a wide selection of over 105 gins from Cornwall and beyond, as well as a variety of Cornish beers, lagers and ciders.
There’s something here to suit every taste, and you can even top it off with a comfortable night’s sleep in one of the seven en-suite rooms – something you may well need after an evening of gin tasting! For more information call 01208 880335 or visit www. cornisharmspendoggett.co.uk

News & views Stunning new space at Whitewater Gallery
Polzeath’s acclaimed art gallery has expanded, opening a dedicated space for original painting, ceramics and sculpture. Situated in the heart of Polzeath, Whitewater Gallery is known for exhibiting the very best in painting, print, photography, ceramics and sculpture. It is also the professional home of artist Suki Wapshott, who as well as being joint Gallery Director, is one of north Cornwall’s most-loved landscape painters. This spring, Suki and her photographer husband Nick took steps to expand their beautiful beachfront gallery, more than doubling their exhibition space to include a bright and spacious venue, which will show original work by Suki and a carefully selected list of supporting artists and makers. “This is a very exciting time for us,” says ick, “expanding the gallery has finally given us a dedicated space devoted to original paintings, a space that is equal to
A mouth-watering menu at The
Mowhay Café the scale and excellence of our artists’ work. We have so many devoted collectors here in Cornwall and nationally, that we wanted to create a grander, more relaxed environment for all to enjoy.” Alongside Suki’s paintings you will find original works by Caroline Cleave and Peter Turnbull, award-winning silversmith Rachael Osborne, ceramicist Hugh West, glassmaker David Pascoe and sculptor Peter Graham amongst others. The adjoining space will continue to show contemporary prints and photography and jewellery by artists including print makers Sarah Seddon and Sally Spens, photographer Nick Wapshott and silversmith Marhsa Drew. For more information visit www.whitewatergallery.co.uk or email art@whitewatergallery.co.uk

News & views The hidden Cornish gem that the locals love Follow the winding country lanes off the main Padstow to Wadebridge road (yes, there is something down there!) and within half a mile you’ll be greeted by the iconic Pickwick Inn and Oliver’s Restaurant. As the locals know, it’s certainly worth finding! As well as being crowned ‘Best Pub in Cornwall’ in the ational Pub and Bar Awards 2019, the Pickwick’s reputation for food has made it a destination venue for decades for those ‘in the know’. Be warned, it gets busy but you can book a table in advance and the friendly staff will always do their best to accommodate you. The Pickwick ethos is all about using the finest local ingredients from on the doorstep. Expect plenty of local seafood, for instance Porthilly oysters (they overlook the beds), as well as seasonal game from a neighbouring farm, and make sure to leave room for one of their famously delicious desserts! The Pickwick chefs are masters at creating imaginative daily specials, alongside traditional hearty pub favourites with a twist. It’s a casual dining experience without any pretence, just great food, top notch service and a view to die for – a proper pub.
The restaurant and rooms are the latest addition to the family-run freehouse; the 100-seater open-kitchen restaurant boasts magnificent views over the Camel Estuary to Padstow and Rock and across the Atlantic ocean. The nine super-stylish rooms all enjoy the same wonderful vista each with its own private balcony, where you can sit and enjoy the rolling Cornish countryside and watch the tide roll in. It’s fair to say that you won’t want to leave! For more information visit www.pickwickinn.co.uk
Something for everyone at Wave 7 Wave 7 Gallery is a long-standing feature on the north Cornwall coast. You’ll see its trademark wind flags on the B 14 by the Polzeath turning. There is also a regularly changing schedule of sole exhibitions in the Granary, featuring both local artists and those from further afield. What’s more, the gallery is the working studio of ictoria Mead, who crafts beautiful mirrors and is presently sculpting for Universal Marina on the river Hamble! Art and craft courses are available at the gallery, including mirror making, felting and painting, with something for all ages. There’s also a tearoom due to open next door, perfect for refreshing yourselves with a hot drink and a slice of cake. Wake up with Rising Ground Rising Ground is a young coffee company based in central Wadebridge. They roast specialty grade coffee from their premises in Foundry Court, home to well known café and delicatessen, Relish. Here are some tips from Master Roaster Sean and Barista Champion Hugo: “Firstly only buy freshly roasted whole bean coffee, never pre-ground. Secondly, own a grinder. It needn’t be expensive, just make sure it’s a burr type, like a pepper mill, not the blade type, like a blender.”
“Once opened,” they continue, “beans stale at the same rate as biscuits, so buy little and often. ever put beans in the fridge or freezer store them in an airtight tin and only grind what you need. Whole beans remain relatively fresh, but when ground will stale in minutes.” “Good coffee doesn’t need milk or sugar – it’s rich, complex and surprisingly sweet as it is!” Visit risinggroundco or www.risingground.coffee

THE DRAW OF THE ESTUARY We speak with luxury property agents, Rohrs & Rowe, about what makes the Camel Estuary area such a popular location for buyers.
K
een to find out more about what makes this fabulous part of the county so popular with those buying into Cornwall, we catch up with Martyn Rohrs and Matthew Rowe, founders of prestigious and award-winning luxury property agency, Rohrs Rowe. Martyn tells us: “Having enjoyed particular success on the south side of the estuary, at the start of this year we have sold every property that we ve had listed in the area. We have even received offers on some off-market properties too. Many cash buyers are looking in the Camel Estuary area for property priced between 500,000 to 4M! The supply of good property to the market is generally low this year, so we are needing more property to supply the demand!” So what makes the area so popular? Matthew and Martyn point out that easy access to ewquay Airport is a very big draw, especially with the new daily Heathrow flights being added and the better links via the improved A 0 now giving easier and faster road access, but of course, it goes deeper than that. Padstow and the wider Camel Estuary area has become the foodie capital of Cornwall, with celebrity chefs such as Rick Stein, Paul Ainsworth and athan Outlaw each having multiple restaurants that draw people from across the country, using some of Cornwall’s finest local and home-grown produce. The area is also abuzz with many other well regarded and up and coming restaurants and eateries, meaning the availability and general standard across the board is very high indeed. But it’s the superb coastal lifestyle on offer here that really tips the scales in the Camel Estuary’s favour. There are so many activities for both children and adults alike to get stuck into, from surfing to just spending leisurely days on any one of the many glorious beaches. Sailing, boating and waterskiing can be enjoyed on the estuary itself, as well as SUP, kite surfing and coasteering. The beaches on both sides are among the best in the country, with the renowned Seven Bays stretching from Trevone to Porthcothan on the Padstow
side, Tregirls and Daymer on opposite sides of the mouth of the estuary and then Polzeath just a little to the north. Each is as beautiful as the last, but offer something different between them, you’ll find long stretches of golden sand and crystal clear waters. Aside from these beautiful beaches, if you like to lace up your boots and head out on foot, you’ll find that the area has some outstanding coastal walks to offer, with dizzying views over the Atlantic and estuary from the South West Coast Path and the tang of salt in the air that promises to work up a hearty appetite – no bad thing given the prestige of food on offer here! For those who enjoy a round of golf, again, the area is very well served. Trevose Golf Country Club offers three courses of outstanding coastal links. These include The Championship Course, which is ranked and voted as one of the top links courses in the British Isles. On the Rock side, you’ll find St Enodoc Golf Club, which has been voted in the top 20 golf courses in the UK and provides beautiful, undulating links with mesmerising views out across the Camel Estuary. There really is no better way to enjoy a leisurely 18 holes (or 19, if you decide to make an afternoon of it!). Whatever it is you need to know, between them, Matthew Rowe and Martyn Rohrs bring a wealth of local knowledge to the table, having successfully sold many of the best houses in the area. Matthew finishes: “We know all of the benefits and lifestyle this area has to offer and, with our unique, bespoke marketing tools, we show each of these and our clients’ properties off to their full potential, adding saleability and, often, extra value.” So, if you’re considering a move to Cornwall or have a property in the Camel Estuary area that you’d like to sell, Rohrs Rowe are perfectly equipped to help.

state agency in Cornwall, according to My Place in Cornwall, is much more than simply helping clients buy and sell property. It’s about embracing the local area, understanding it inside out and being passionate about not just the properties they sell, but the local communities, amenities and the lifestyle that the Duchy has to offer. Cornwall is blessed with a great selection of unique homes and My Place In Cornwall define a unique home as one which has characteristics that set it apart. It could be picture postcard view across the landscape, the period features of a village cottage, or stunning architecture that oozes the wow factor. "We recognise 'unique' as something that deserves to be presented at its very best by using stunning imagery, stylish videos and thought provoking drone views. Our database of buyers come to us because they know they're going to find something out of the ordinary, a property that they will be proud to call their home," says Managing Director, Richard Yeo. When you become a client of My Place In Cornwall, the process is all about achieving the desired outcome for you and your family. "We want you to feel reassured, comfortable with the process of selling and most of all, we want
to minimise any stress that comes with selling your home," explains Richard. Importantly, Richard and the team know the local north Cornwall area extremely well. The agency was born in Wadebridge back in 2008 and many of the staff live in the local area. During the summer months, they love nothing more than family time spent on the stunning local beaches and it's this level of local knowledge and hands-on experience of the

area that can help you to find the right buyer for your property. Of course, style and substance is an important part of presenting your property at its very best, which is why My Place In Cornwall utilise the latest modern marketing tools to proliferate the reach of a property. “We’ve built an enviable database of prospective buyers over the last ten years, both locally, nationally, even internationally,” explains Candice Nicholson, My Place’s Sales and Business Development Manager. “This helps us promote your property to the widest possible reach, enabling a sales process that can help you achieve the right offer from the right buyer.” What’s more, this fantastic Cornish agency recently launched their brand new website, combining these ingredients to encompass all the crucial elements required to run a successful agency. Candice continues: “Modern marketing is about engaging with your audience and creating content that brings them back time and time again. We like to think that we help our audience to aspire to make the most of a unique lifestyle in a unique county.” While modern estate agency may have seen a shift towards a ‘hands-off’, DIY approach
with cheaper fees and, often, no commission, My Place in Cornwall chooses to stick to their core belief that unique property deserves the support of a professional and pro-active agency to achieve the very best results. As Candice puts it: “When you become a client of ours, you can rest assured that you’ll always receive a five star, award-winning service where all that matters to us is that we achieve the best result.” Richard, Candice and the team are fortunate to have an impressive database of past and current clients, each of whom use their service because they trust it to relieve their fears, concerns or stress levels when selling their property. Many are repeat customers too, who clearly have a lot of trust in My Place in Cornwall. “This is why our brand will never join the crowd in offering ‘cheap’ fees and a reduced level of service,” Richard finishes. “We believe there are a multitude of property owners who appreciate and are happy to invest in a premium service to achieve the right result for them.” If you are considering marketing your property, you can get started today by booking your free market appraisal with My Place In Cornwall, where you'll learn all about how Richard and the team can utilise the very best in modern marketing to help you achieve the results you deserve.

At the heart
OF THE COMMUNITY We discover a property and holiday letting agency with a difference, situated at right on the Camel Estuary.
C
elebrating a very successful 30 years in business this year, Cole Rayment & White started out as a single-office estate agency on the north Cornwall coast. As well as selling property, they always had links with a local letting agent in Rock right from the early days. When the owner retired, it made sense to take over the business, so expanding their portfolio into specialist self-catering holiday lettings as well as sales. Turn the clock forward and Cole Rayment White now has offices across the Camel Estuary area, in Wadebridge, Rock, Padstow and Camelford. We were keen to take a look at some of the delightful holiday properties that Cole, Rayment & White have on their books and for larger parties of family and friends we found two exceptional ones. For a seaside getaway, Skylarks, sleeping 11 guests, can be found off Daymer Lane in Polzeath. Just 650 metres from the beach and with gently sloping gardens and a delightful patio overlooking Daymer Bay you can spend a wonderful holiday here taking in all the stunning north Cornish coast has to offer. If you prefer a countryside location then Moiety Cross is a stunning character property for 12. Set in nearly six acres of private land at the heart of Rock, it even has its own tennis court. The world-renowned
St Enodoc Golf Club is nearby, as are some fabulous Michelin-starred restaurants. All of the properties are carefully selected for their location and style so you can be assured of the most fabulous holiday home. When it comes to property sales, Cole Rayment & White’s unique, innovative and first-class marketing strategy has accounted for lots of satisfied customers since they opened their doors in 1989 and the company prides itself as being an integral part of the local community, with a reputation of being both approachable and helpful. With so many years of success, the desire to help and support local communities has been a key part of the company’s on-going ethos and philosophy, and many local sports clubs have benefited from their sponsorship.

Many clients from outside the county use Britannia Lanes as a company they know they can trust, and it’s fair to say that the string of five-star reviews this company has achieved really speak for themselves. It isn’t just those moving to Cornwall that can benefit from Britannia Lanes’ unrivalled service, though. With the recent re-launch of the company’s website, Britannia Lanes, which has always had a price guide for the UK, now offers a price guide for those moving to
and from Europe, as well as an international price guide for people moving to Australia, New Zealand, USA, Canada and South Africa. This makes such a daunting move just that little bit easier, especially knowing you can still rely on the Britannia team’s safe hands half way around the world! Back to removals and it’s fair to say that Britannia Lanes offers a comprehensive removals and storage service. As Managing Director, Mark Lane, explains: “There’s no one size fits all here. Our approach is centred on listening to our clients’ needs and then accommodating them as best as possible. This often includes informing them on the alternative solutions that they may not have thought of – giving them options, to either save money or reduce the hassle for them.” But where the removals service gets really smart is in Mark and the team's video surveys. Using specially developed software, the client gives a tour of their house via their smartphone or tablet. Mark tells us: “We get a very clear understanding of their needs and concerns. Having some face-to-face interaction, albeit through technology, helps provide a personal touch – we’re not just an anonymous company!” Using the survey, Mark uses his experience to work out the number of boxes and overall volume required, creating a detailed itinerary.
MAIN Whether you're relocating to Cornwall, or half way around the world, you can rely on the professionals at Britannia Lanes
“It’s an extremely effective way of identifying any issues, such as items that will require extra special care, in advance of arrival. Video surveys make our estimates much more accurate, and also mean our crews are far better informed on what to expect, and the kind of packaging they’ll need.” So, if you’re thinking of making a move or have commercial needs that Britannia Lanes can help with, why not head to the new website and go from there? It may just be the smartest move you ever make!

Made locally with love
Fresh and free range
This small, family run gift shop first opened in 2015 and, according to owner Lynne Payne: “It has been a dream come true for us all.” In store you’ll find fine art and crafts made in Cornwall, from a number of talented local artists and makers, all inspired by the coast. There’s also a large range of other products, including quality dog wear and gifts, glass wear, reclaimed Cornish slate products, along with homeware, jewellery, Cornish tin, pewter, bronze and silver. All of this plus, of course, an assortment of lucky Cornish piskies!
Padstow Farmshop is situated near the beautiful Stepper Point, where much of the land is in the Countryside Stewardship – an environmental scheme where no sprays or fertiliser are used. We hear from shop Manager, Sarah Hodgson, who tells us: “Our passion is home-reared and free range and our emphasis is on fresh produce.” The new Roundhouse Delicatessen serves pasties and sausage rolls, freshly made salads using only the best quality ingredients and ready meal pots made in small batches using beef, pork and lamb raised on the farm. Or, you can simply pop in for a coffee and a cinnamon bun!

D Cornish Pest Control
Padstow Gallery
D Cornish Pest Control is the Camel Estuary’s local pest control company. Based in St Merryn near Padstow, the company also has many other offices throughout Cornwall. The highly qualified pest controllers can deal with any pest problems or infestations, with over 18 years’ experience in providing high standard and cost effective pest control solutions to both domestic and commercial customers. Owner David Cornish tells us: “Through striving to achieve both excellence and quality, we aim to be the leading pest control company throughout this part of Cornwall.”
Being based on the stunning north coast of Cornwall has certainly influenced the style of the gallery, which focuses around the concept of ‘edges’ and ‘boundaries’ – where land meets sky – a celebration of the flora and fauna of our countryside, and ruggedness of the natural coastline. Padstow Gallery is a truly independent outlet, where each item is sourced directly from selected makers and creators, be it an original painting, a one-off sculpture, handcrafted jewellery, unique ceramics, or a handmade limited-edition print.

FLAVOURS OF
ick Stein has a deep seated love for the Duchy, and it’s not hard to understand why. It’s no surprise that he’s based so many of his restaurants here, with the county’s provenance of food and diverse array of produce immediately available. He tells us: “I like the fact that on a sunny day, with not a cloud in the sky, there’s nowhere else on Earth I would rather be. Maybe it’s because we don’t have that many sunny days, or maybe it’s the soft quality of light that gives the white houses, green patches of trees and the deep blue estuary the look of a watercolour.” One thing’s for sure, it’s certainly made an impact on Rick, one that’s clearly evident in his love of the sea and seafood. Next to the Camel Estuary in Padstow, you’ll find a number of old pubs, famous restaurants and quirky art galleries. Among these is the Rick Stein family of businesses, each providing incredible seafood. If you’re out and about and looking for a quick light bite, you can grab a traditional box of fish and chips and gaze out over the estuary as you eat your lunch. Alternatively, you could head to Rick Stein’s Café and tuck into a helping of Asian inspired salt and pepper prawns. With its relaxed setting, Stein’s Café is a great place to stop and refuel.

The Seafood Restaurant, with its sunny terrace, is perfect for something a little more formal. Sit out on the rooftop terrace for drinks or take your pick from the seafood bar in the middle – perfect for an impromptu plate of fresh seafood. Contrary to popular belief, walk ins are more than welcome and you’ll be delighted at the array of flavours on offer, particularly when the sun’s shining and nothing tickles your fancy quite like a flavour of the Cornish coast. Speaking of summer dining, St Petroc’s Bistro has a beautiful courtyard, which is the ideal spot for enjoying your choice from the threecourse menu al fresco, before heading back to your coastal accommodation for a siesta. For some, nothing beats a good pub. If so, The Cornish Arms in St Merryn ticks all the boxes, being a traditional Cornish pub and offering a simple British menu inspired by Rick’s recipes. Dogs are welcome too, so you needn’t let your furry friend miss out on all the fun! After dinner, why not head out to the beer garden and sit back with a pint of Trelawny? If sampling some of the best drinks Cornwall has to offer then Ruby’s Bar in Padstow is just the ticket. Enjoy the ambiance of wooden stools and tables as you soak up the atmosphere, feeling as if you’re sat on board a grand ship as you sip on your favourite tipple.
Perhaps you fancy rustling up your own culinary storm? Indeed, after sampling some of Rick’s recipes, who could blame you? Fortunately, Padstow is also home to Rick Stein’s Cookery School, where you can learn the skills to make your own dishes, all inspired by Rick’s travels. Rick Stein’s passion for great food and the unbeatable Cornish lifestyle is all pervasive around the Camel Estuary, with most of his establishments boasting incredible estuary views, reminding you of what drew him to this incredible county. Offering some of the best seafood you’re likely to find, whether you’re looking for a fine dining experience or a box of unadulterated fish and chips on the harbour, Rick has somewhere for everybody to enjoy a flavour of the coast!

THE IMPACT OF ARCHITECTURE Discover how you can create a beautiful home with minimal impact on the environment with ARCO2 Architecture é ABOVE
Mellalue, designed by ARCO2 Architecture
W
ith a by-line: “beautiful buildings that don’t cost the earth,” the ARCO2 Architecture team emphasise that their projects are both cost effective and environmentally aware. Director Ian Armstrong tells us: “ARCO2 don’t just build you a dwelling or office, we create homes with benefits to enhance your lifestyle – literally building homes for future generations.” This building approach is evident in the creation of ‘Mellalue’, an outstanding coastal property designed and built by ARCO2’s inhouse construction company. When creating and building this remarkable property, the ARCO2 team worked closely with their client to achieve their vision to the highest possible standard, whilst also taking into consideration the impact on the surrounding environment and neighbours. Ian continues: “As a RIBA Chartered Architects Practice we have a unique, innovative and human approach to design which is evident in this stunning house.” The new dwelling replaces a mid-20th Century bungalow, which was of little architectural merit and didn’t make the most of the beautiful site. ARCO2 stepped in and with a brief from the client to construct a low
energy, contemporary home that could accommodate a family with teenagers and elderly parents; the team made moves to construct this impressive property. Ian emphasises that: “one of the key design considerations was to retain the sea views for the neighbouring building behind and improve their outlook.” With this in mind, the house was designed with a curved roof to maximise space, minimise impact and enhance the neighbour’s perspective. Ian continues: “It’s one of the most sustainable dwellings in terms of building fabric and energy usage in the area, and demonstrates that a strong but simple design concept can be really striking.” So, if you want to create a beautiful home with minimal impact on the environment, then get in touch for your free consultation and make moves to secure yourself a home and help secure the planet for future generations.

O
wning a home on the Camel Estuary means life in one of the most beautiful regions of England. For many, a house here represents a lifetime of hard work and is the ultimate escape, a place where the perfect home interior can blend seamlessly with the perfect landscape. If you’re looking for exclusive artwork that reflects your passion for Cornwall, look no further than a bespoke work by glass artist Jo Downs. At her studio in north Cornwall, Jo creates uniquely beautiful work inspired by the textures and colours of the coast. Her expertise in glass design is matched only by her love for Cornwall, a county she tells us: “that inspires me endlessly. Like so many people, I was drawn here by the beauty of the landscape and the brilliant Cornish light. Each piece I make is a celebration of Cornwall, and every detail of this special place is reflected in my work.” With 20 years in bespoke glass design, Jo has an enviable client list and has seen through a host of projects, including commissions for the Royal College of Art, Westminster Tower in London, and luxury hotels from Dubai to the Isles of Scilly. All of these, plus many private homes, from Cornwall to the coast of New Zealand! Her designs have included spectacular wallmounted works, statement windows, and shimmering multi-piece chandeliers, all hand cut, crafted, fired and finished at her studio in Launceston.
“My clients want to express their personality, and their passions, through their design choices,” says Jo. “A beautiful home should reflect the character, the cultural interests and the aspirations of the people who created it. Commissioned works are really a reflection of the client, and it’s my job to create work which they feel strongly connected to. There is a huge commitment in terms of time and energy with private commissions, but each project is all the more rewarding for that. It’s a totally fulfilling experience for me to see a project through from my very first drawing to the final installation, and for my clients, nothing beats that moment when their exclusive artwork takes pride of place in their home.” To find out more about Jo’s bespoke work and to discuss a commission, be sure to call the studio, drop the team an email or head to the website, where you’ll see more of Jo’s incredible pieces and almost certainly find inspiration for your own home!

aboard!
For a great day out on the water, or a private hire celebration, why not take a cruise along the north Cornish coast on The Jubilee Queen?
T
he Jubilee Queen was built in Wadebridge 40 years ago, by the same family that own her today. She has recently undergone an extensive refurbishment to make her once again a true lady of the seas. At 25 metres long, and with seating for 200 people, this is Cornish cruising at its best. There are daily sailings leaving from Padstow Harbour that take you either on the calm waters of the estuary towards Wadebridge or hug the stunning Cornish coastline to Port Isaac and back – naturally weather dependent! The crew has a combined experience of over 70 years at sea, and with backgrounds as coastal or deep-sea fishermen, or RNLI crew, you know you’ll be in safe and knowledgeable hands. The boat is permanently moored in Padstow harbour, from where the crew run two sailing trips every day between April and November. You might even be lucky enough to spot a pod of dolphins on your trip as they often come up and swim alongside. The best part is that there’s no need to book, you can just decide in the morning that you fancy a trip, hop aboard and relax! Whether you, yourself or your little ones aspire to life as a pirate, an afternoon on board the Jubilee Queen comes highly recommended. The boat also boasts a well stocked bar, including the full Sharps Brewery selection, as well as tea and barista coffee, making for the perfect pit stop on your day exploring the north Cornwall coast. She is available for private hire as well, ideal for those special birthdays, weddings or family gatherings. Your cruise will offer 360 degree panoramic views of the stunning Camel Estuary and the route can be designed to your specific requirements making it a truly unique experience. A number of ticketed events take place on The Jubliee Queen throughout the season, and you can find the latest programme of these events on the website. Last year saw Feeder, Huey Morgan, Citizen Dance, Boardmasters and many more live music events take place on this truly unique venue. So if you’re looking for a day out or a party with a difference then we highly recommend climbing aboard The Jubilee Queen.

RIGHT Happy, engaged children are more likely to grow into confident and independent learners
L
ocated near Wadebridge, Hawksfield Nursery provides a refreshing approach to childcare and is ideally located for families that live near or around the Camel Estuary. Coming up to its three-year anniversary, the nursery has already built a reputation for maintaining high standards and being a fun and stimulating environment for young children. We hear from ursery Manager, Bex Pumphrey, who tells us: “We’re different to what’s around, there’s no set ‘planning’ here! We are led by the child’s interests, and we respond in that moment.” In regards to what this approach entails, it’s actually nothing new and something that parents do very naturally – every time you look at or listen to your child, you are assessing and planning how to respond to that child. The response is planned in the moment. It starts with the child and is led by the child and then the idea is to find ways to respond that suit that child. Bex continues: “It’s called ‘in the moment’ because we seize that moment and therefore support the child immediately, allowing them to formulate their own ideas and harbouring their initiative and curiosity.” The team at Hawksfield are fully trained and qualified. They are deeply committed and passionate in their approach and work closely with each other and parents to understand every child’s individuality and promote their unique development.
By responding to the child’s interests, it ensures that the child feels valued and engaged therefore new learning is possible and that child’s progress is maximised by putting their wellbeing first and responding in ways that respect and value their unique identity. Open all year round for children from three months to five years, the nursery prepares home-cooked, balanced and nutritious meals throughout the day. The children are heavily involved in fresh baking and preparation for their meals and snacks. The nursery even has its own eight-seater van to further enrich interests and take spontaneous outings around the local area. Overall, Hawksfield ursery promotes happy, engaged children who grow to become confident and independent learners, leaving them ready for school and the wider world.

T
he picturesque coastal hamlet of Port Gaverne nestles right next to Port Isaac (otherwise known as Portwenn, to fans of Doc Martin), just north of Wadebridge. With two fantastic eateries, an activity centre, a delightful beach that’s dog friendly all year round, plus miles of Cornwall’s most dramatic coast paths on its doorstep, it’s the ideal base from which to explore the Camel Estuary. Sound idyllic? With ten unique cottages and apartments all in Port Gaverne, Forever Cornwall has a retreat here to suit everyone. If you’re after a foodie break, these cottages couldn’t be in a better location, with two Nathan Outlaw restaurants, fabulous pizzas and classic Cornish pub grub just a short stroll away in Port Isaac. Right next door to your accommodation you’ll find the Port Gaverne Restaurant & Hotel, voted Cornwall’s best gastropub, or for tapas, sharing plates and drinks by the beach, there’s the stylish Pilchards café. But this coastal hamlet isn’t just for foodies. Outdoor enthusiasts will be pleasantly surprised at the extent of activities available here. Cornish Rock Tors will guide you around this part of the coastline by whatever adventurous means you choose; kayaking, paddleboarding, coasteering, wild swimming, the choice is yours! And with miles of coastal footpath and some of the best beaches in Cornwall in the area, you certainly won’t be short of activities in Port Gaverne. As the tide retreats in the cove, a sandy beach, rockpools and caves are revealed. As it’s so sheltered, it’s a great beach for kids to explore, but if you’re looking for somewhere you can really let them run free, you can simply drive a few miles either way along the coast, with vast expanses of golden sands to be found at Polzeath, Daymer Bay and Trebarwith. Finally, after a day of activities, retreat to your holiday home, rinse off those sandy
toes and enjoy an al fresco dinner. Or, dry off in front of the woodburner and get cosy for the evening. The two Tregudda apartments are perfect for larger groups of families or friends, while Forever Cornwall’s selection of cottages, with wooden floors and exposed beams, are perfect for a more intimate break with just the two of you. Whether it’s an out-of-season couple’s retreat or a classic bucket and spade family break, Port Gaverne is the perfect location for a Cornish retreat.

enowned for its buzzing foodie scene, when you visit the Camel Estuary you have the opportunity to journey through a world of flavour thanks to its mouthwatering selection of eateries, with cuisine dished up in front of estuary views, countryside vistas and classic Cornish scenes. To give you a taste of what’s on offer, we’ve brought together a selection of our favourites that, between them, represent the truly delectable variety of food available here.
PRAWN ON THE LAWN Nestled within Padstow’s weaving streets you’ll find Prawn On The Lawn (prawnonthelawn. com), a fish bar and restaurant that dishes up the finest shellfish and fish cuisine, fresh from the ocean. After sourcing its fish from Padstow for the wildly successful Islington branch, owners Rick and Katie Toogood decided to open a restaurant just metres from the harbour where the fish is brought in. As a measure of its fabulous fayre, Prawn on the Lawn was featured in the 2019 edition of The Michelin Guide and was listed in the Sunday Times’ ‘Top 100 Restaurants for 2018’. The daily changing menu is made up of small plates as well as whole fish and shellfish straight from the counter.

BARNABY’S Just a stone’s throw from Padstow harbour, you’ll find Barnaby’s (barnabyspadstow. com) – sister restaurant to Prawn on the Lawn. Barnaby’s is a labour of love and reflects the owners’ passion for scrumptious food, amazing service and relaxed dining that brings people together. At the heart of Barnaby’s sits Bertha – the kitchen’s much-loved wood-fired oven. The majority of dishes served here are prepared in Bertha, with the aim of preserving the natural flavour of the locally sourced, seasonal ingredients.
GREENS OF PADSTOW Perched overlooking the harbour and with mesmerising estuary views, Green’s of Padstow (greenspadstow.co.uk) provides the perfect pit-stop to enjoy some delicious Cornish cuisine whether you’ve hopped off the ferry from Rock, walked along the South West Coast Path or simply spent the day perusing Padstow’s boutique shops and local beaches. The seasonal menu champions the quality ingredients available in Cornwall, and is served alongside panoramic estuary views. Adding another string to its already laden bow, Greens also has its very own crazy golf course and gardens – allowing you to couple your feast with good old-fashioned family fun!
TIM’S PLACE Run by passionate local chef, Timothy Dean, Tim’s Place (timothydean.co.uk) is a café and bistro with a focus on Cornish produce at the core of all its offerings. “I’ve been running Tim’s Place for the last seven years since I was 18 years old. We’re open seven days a week, serving breakfast, lunches and light bites from our bistro menu,” Tim tells us. Including freshly baked cakes and seafood dishes that will transport you to the Cornish coastline, all served in a relaxed environment in the heart of Wadebridge.

Paul comments: “Emma and I are thrilled to be taking over The Mariners in partnership with Sharp’s Brewery. When the opportunity arose, we knew straight away that we had to take it.”

ust minutes from the Camel Estuary’s sheltered shores you’ll find the crashing surf, hidden coves and rugged coastline of Cornwall’s north coast. The Seven Bays: Trevone Bay, Haryln Bay, Mother Ivy’s Bay, Booby’s Bay, Constantine Bay, Treyarnan Bay and Porthcothan Bay, are renowned for their stunning scenery, coastal walks and, of course, their sandy beaches. If you really want to take in this beautiful corner of Cornwall then there is no better way to do so than to take a tour of the Seven Bays. Starting at Porthcothan Bay and wrapping around the headland all the way to Trevone Bay, you can make the most of the opportunity to spend each day at one of these beautiful beaches, or explore between them, in which case you’ll be in for an awe-inspiring dose of Cornish sun, sand and adventure. There’s also the opportunity to walk from cove to cove – a more active way to explore the coast. If you start at Porthcothan Bay and head to Trevone Bay the coast path wraps around a series of inlets that are rumoured to have been used by smugglers. The path then leads to the sandy beaches of Treyarnon and Constantine Bay, which is renowned for its
surfing. ext you’ll find Booby’s Bay, where a buried shipwreck is sometimes revealed by storms, before the coast path climbs again onto Trevose Head, past a collapsed cave and onto Trinity Lighthouse.

Built in the 19th century to act as a guide to vessels in the Bristol Channel, Trinity Lighthouse stands sentry over Trevose Head, a beautiful stretch of headland that boasts panoramic sea views and from which you can expect to spot basking sharks and dolphins – especially on those calm summers days when the clear turquoise waters reveal the secrets that lie beneath the ocean’s surface. The final part of the walk is above the sheltered, sandy beaches of Mother Ivy’s Bay, named after the legend of a white witch and providing a sheltered and quiet option for explorers thanks to its isolated location. Harlyn Bay is then just a short walk away and boasts a wide and spacious beach with golden sands – perfect for families, especially considering its reputation as one of Cornwall’s safest beaches. The final stretch takes you to Trevone Bay, awarded Blue Flag status thanks to its exceptional water quality Trevone has surf hire, a caf and both a sandy and rocky beach, so whether you like to build sandcastles or spend your day exploring the rockpools and discovering the complex ecosystems that reside within them, you’re set for an adventurous day at the beach no matter what.

Or, for the really avid walker, you can camp at either end and combine all the best bits of a holiday in one fell swoop camping, beaches, walking and the ocean in one beautifully Cornish package. The various differences between the bays, from family-friendly coves to crashing surf, means that you can expect to encounter new experiences at each point of your journey. The scenery is simply astounding and you’re sure to be enthralled, whether you choose to walk, swim, surf or kayak along this stunning stretch of coastline. IS YOUR GARDEN We catch up with Mid Cornwall Landscaping and get their take on gardening trends for 2019. RIGHT Transform your garden into an outdoor space that you'll love to spend time in
A
s the evenings draw out and we start looking forward to summer, it’s time to remember that there’s a garden outside of those closed doors! Whether it’s established or a new project, the team at Mid Cornwall Landscaping Ltd share their top tips on this year’s gardening trends. Bring the inside out With our increasingly busy lifestyles, we should consider the garden an outside room – an extension of the house. This way, it becomes our sanctuary, a place to unwind and make the most of the outdoor lifestyle that many of us love about living in Cornwall. More than ever the garden is becoming our sitting room, kitchen and dining room and this year, outdoor seating, fire pits, hideaways and outdoor kitchens will continue to be a priority. Grow your own Many of us are increasing the amount of fresh fruit and veg that we eat, so why not grow your own? Not only can you ensure your food’s provenance, it’s incredibly satisfying eating what you’ve grown. Whether you’re just beginning or are an experienced ‘allotmenteer’, growing your own is only set to grow in popularity, whether it’s in pots, ornamental borders or dedicated vegetable gardens. Add some colour Although the palette of cool pastels and silvers remains popular, hot reds, yellows and oranges are making a comeback, with species like dahlias and chrysanthemums gaining popularity. Planted against a dark foliage backdrop or contrasting coloured wall or fence, they make a real statement. Alternatively, a colourful piece of furniture on a dark slate patio can look fabulous!
EXPERIENCE
GET EXOTIC In Cornwall’s sub-tropical climate, many exotic plants can survive and thrive, a trend that’s steadily on the rise. Why not consider introducing something exotic to your garden?
Go natural Instead of trying to tame your natural environment, why not work with it instead? Even the smallest corner can be given over to promote bio-diversity; an area of grass can be left to grow longer or sown with wild flowers. Many of the popular perennials and grasses are ideal for providing habitat and food sources to attract birds and insects. Making landscaping choices in harmony with nature can be incredibly rewarding and certainly does not mean compromise!
Mid Cornwall Landscaping are there to help you with all your garden and landscaping needs for 2019, offering advice, design and even a full planting and construction service. Why not give the team a call and get your project off the ground?

ESCAPES Thinking of booking a self-catering escape to the West Country? Have a charming holiday cottage to let? Toad Hall Cottages are here to help.
W
ith over 30 years’ experience and 900 cottages to choose from, the team at Toad Hall Cottages are dedicated to finding the perfect holiday cottage for you. With offices across the south west, and their new office in Wadebridge, the booking advisors listen carefully to your requirements and suggest cottages to make your West Country holiday a truly memorable one. Alternatively if you own a cottage which you are thinking of using as a holiday let, or are thinking of buying one, the team have offered us some top tips for making your cottage as appealing as possible.
1. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION If you’re buying a property, think carefully about the location. Coastal properties are appealing, especially for families, but equally some people like to get away from it all in remote properties or places with attractions or activities nearby. Toad Hall’s experienced property team are happy to offer free advice or visit a property with you under no obligation.
2. HOME FROM HOME, ONLY BETTER Try to make your property as attractive as possible inside and out. Imagine arriving after a long tiring journey and make your cottage look smart and welcoming. It’s worth investing in quality beds, pillows and linen and cushions. Throws, quality furnishings and pictures all add to the feel. The team are happy to offer advice on furnishing, decoration and room layout.
3. THOSE LITTLE EXTRAS Think about the little things that would make your guests’ holidays more enjoyable. WiFi is pretty much obligatory these days and a hairdryer, luxury toiletries, Smart TV or streaming services are always appreciated. To make it more personal, a bottle of wine and welcome note on arrival make a huge difference. In the kitchen, make sure there is enough of everything for the number of guests and a few to spare too. Ask one of Toad Hall’s Property Managers for an owner inventory if you’re not sure.
é ABOVE é INSET
Location is everything when choosing a holiday home
4. FOUR LEGGED FRIENDS The UK is a dog-loving nation and the experts highly recommend that your property accepts dogs. They’re part of the family after all.
5. CHILDREN The biggest self-catering market is families, so if possible it makes sense to make your property family friendly. The Toad Hall team can advise on legal safety standards but in addition some children’s pictures, books, toys or bed linen are bound to be appreciated and, for older children, DVDs, games or beach equipment.

oscastle Farm Shop and Café is built on National Trust land in a stunning cliff top location just north of Boscastle Harbour. On a clear day you can enjoy breath-taking views of the ocean, cliffs and far reaching countryside. Why not take away something delicious and go for a walk along the nearby South West Coast Path? Or stay and enjoy the views with one of the many daily homemade dishes, desserts or cakes they have to offer. Owners Jackie and Robin Haddy and the Farm Shop team are passionate about using the very best local produce to create a distinct menu of farmhouse cooking, and thanks to all this, the team is proud to have been rated ‘Silver 2018’ for its shop and café by Taste of the West. The Farm Shop has a well-stocked deli and varied food hall selling fresh local produce and, of course, their own homemade fayre. OF DENTISTRY We catch up with the team at Wadebridge Dental who have one aim – to cover all of your dentistry needs under one roof!
I
DID YOU KNOW? Children of registered patients are seen and treated for free until the age of 18. What’s more, Wadebridge Dental is currently offering free consultations for dental implants, teeth straightening, sedation and facial aesthetics!
n 2000 Melissa and Andrew Taylor met whilst studying Dentistry in Cardiff. After qualifying as dentists they moved back to Melissa’s home county of Cornwall, where they married and undertook the transformation of Wadebridge Dental. It is now one of the largest independent family run dental practices in the south west, with stateof-the-art facilities offering an ever-increasing list of treatment options. They tell us: “We may have underestimated the amount of work it would take doubling the size of our practice, upgrading and then running it! We are still talking and feel extremely lucky to have one another and to be best friends, despite so much hard work and stress!” Andrew has been extremely busy in the last few years undertaking extensive advanced training with his Masters degree in restorative dentistry, implant training, Invisalign training and many more, we don’t know how he fits it all in! What’s more, Wadebridge Dental’s team of dentists is committed to advancing their skills through additional training, including sedation, facial aesthetics and teeth straightening, in order to offer everything you could need from your dentist under one roof. This dedication also means the introduction of state-of-the-art technology, designed to make the process both more efficient and more comfortable for patients. Understandably, Andrew and Melissa are incredibly proud of what they have achieved,
but they couldn’t have done it without a fantastic team behind them. Andrew continues: “Without them, none of this would have been possible. From our star Practice Manager Sarah, who supports us endlessly, and our long-suffering and lovely Reception Manager, Gill, to our fabulous Head Nurse, Becky and our newest member Kim; to all of our 30-plus team members, we are extremely grateful for how each and every one of them has helped make it all possible.” And, having won ‘Best Practice South West’ at the Dentistry Awards 2018 and been finalists in the Private Dentistry Awards 2018 for ‘Most Improved Practice’ and ‘Practice of the Year’, these are exciting times indeed for Melissa, Andrew and the team. Whatever your family’s needs, the team of experts are more than happy to help, with a myriad of treatment options covering everything from general dentistry, implant dentistry, cosmetic dentistry, facial aesthetics, skincare and hygienist appointments all under one roof. Why not head to the website and read Wadebridge Dental’s many glowing Google reviews for yourself?
