Welcome

From the Editor to the January edition of Cornwall Living!

It is with delight that we welcome 2023 in Cornwall. The dawn of a new year is a time for looking forward, embracing new hopes and dreams and perhaps setting some goals for the year ahead. Being happy and healthy in body and mind is something we should all strive for and so, from page 15, I've been looking at ways in which we can take some small steps towards changing our daily habits for the better. Escape Swims also join us this issue (page 60), explaining the mental and physical benefits of cold water swimming, the opportunity for which can be found in many coves and pools around the Cornish coast.

Now is also a time, once the decorations have been taken down and packed away for another year, that our thoughts turn to our homes. Whether it's your forever home in the Duchy or a holiday property, getting it spring-ready couldn't be simpler with interior inspiration, from page 32, offering advice on choosing furniture, windows, woodburners, carpets and more.

Talking of holiday properties, now is also a great time to book your next stay in Cornwall. This issue features a selection of luxury retreats. From page 43, you'll discover everything from coastal cottages and elegant townhouses to intimate escapes and family friendly boltholes, each with its own unique appeal and all providing the perfect base from which to experience the beauty and majesty of the county.

As ever, our property pages (from page 25) showcase some incredible homes on the market, including a remarkable beachside residence and a highly desirable architectural masterpiece in a unique woodland setting.

…happy reading!

If you’re concerned about your child’s health because they are regularly suffering from nausea and sickness, diarrhoea, skin issues, wind, abdominal pain or lethargy, then the Junior Food Intolerance Test could be the one for them.

Food intolerance is often caused by a difficulty digesting certain foods, with symptoms emerging hours or even days later. Depending on the type of food intolerance, the immune system can sometimes identify food protein particles as ‘foreign’ when they enter the blood stream and produce Immunoglobulins (IgG antibodies) to ‘attack’ the food in question.

Lending a helping hand

The Cornish Company always has the best interests of local people at heart, with the aim of being one of the leading voices on the issues that Cornwall faces. The team partnered with The Trussell Trust this Christmas, who help the local community by providing essential food and services to those most in need. The number of people in Cornwall using a food bank at some point this year has more than doubled, a figure which shows the need for communities to come together in a time of goodwill and giving this winter.

So far, The Cornish Company has managed to raise over £1,800 by giving their customers the option to add a donation to an order. The money raised

will be evenly distributed across the 11 Trussell Trust backed food banks in Cornwall. By using The Cornish Company this Christmas, local Cornish people will benefit from the tastes of Cornwall sent across the UK.

The Jackson Foundation will donate 100% of the proceeds from the sale of this beautiful limited edition print, with the aim of raising £30,000 for the benefit of local groups and projects including helping to fund the purchase of an electric minibus for Pendeen School, free art equipment for St Just’s primary, secondary and nursery schools, supporting the Nancherrow Centre youth club and sponsoring a Pengarth Day

Centre project that serves free hot meals for the elderly in West Penwith who find themselves alone on Christmas Day.

I’m not one for resolutions. I find that they’re too quick to be decided upon and all too easily broken. This year, I’m going to opt for some long-term goal setting instead, taking time to really think about what I want to achieve in terms of health and happiness, and adopting some sustainable changes that will see me through the year and beyond. I’ve recently become interested in breathwork and its associated benefits, so I’m going to start there. Having been tutored at a recent workshop by breathwork coach Anthony Mullaly (anthonymulllay.

to nose breathing is no longer inherent, and this affects stress levels and subsequently our mental health. The Scarlet (scarlethotel. co.uk) and Bedruthan (bedruthan.com) hotels will be running workshops next year combining breathwork and cold-water immersion and I can highly recommend this as a way to let go of any stress and anxieties that you might be holding on to. Who would have thought that simply by changing the way we breathe we can achieve a freedom of thought and nourishment of the body?

com), I was amazed by how, with just

), I was amazed by how, with just a little time spent on practising correct breathing techniques, these could have such dramatic benefits.

Nose breathing is something that we should all be doing and when combined with breath holding has myriad benefits. Breathing through the mouth is something our ancestors would only have done in times of stress, when the fight-or-flight response was activated and they were in need of greater volumes of air. They would revert to nose breathing as soon as the stressor was gone, however in modern times we have lost that ability, the reversion

While practising breathwork, some of which is done seated on the floor, I quickly realised that my ageing scatter cushions just weren’t going to cut it! In some ways, breathwork is akin to meditation and so I went on the hunt for a cushion that would help position my body correctly. Sati’s (satidesign.com) ethical meditation cushions are thoughtfully designed in Cornwall and hand made in a small village just outside Jaipur in India. Using only natural dyes and traditional block printing techniques, these firm cushions elevate your hips to the correct angle, dropping your knees below your thighs, allowing a good spine position and excellent overall posture while you sit.

I have also decided that it isn’t just my mind that deserves some attention over the coming year, how I nourish my body also needs some work. With the excesses of the festive period behind us, many of us will turn to dry January and embark on various diets to try and banish those extra pounds. Going ‘coldturkey’ and suddenly depriving our bodies is great for short term gains, but should we be looking at longer term solutions where the choices we make can be sustained throughout the year? With so much in the news recently about rising infections from flu, Covid and a nasty strain of Step A, I’ve looked to a Cornish product that is bursting with vitamin C, made from a tiny orange berry grown on the Roseland. Agronomist Seth, discovered

this magical berry while trekking to Everest base camp with his friend Kiran. Suffering the effects of altitude sickness, they were given a bright orange drink by a sherpa, and the effects were amazing. Made from sea buckthorn, Seth discovered that the plant could be found growing wild in Cornwall and so began cultivating his own crop, forming the Cornish Seaberry Co (cornishseaberry.co.uk). The resulting drink, VitaminSEA comes in 250ml cans, with each portion providing 76% of your daily vitamin C, plus lots of other health benefits too. Each of the small orange berries are crammed with vitamin C, E and A, and being high in antioxidants and containing omega oils, they help our immune system to function correctly, hydrate and heal our bodies, and support our digestive functions and respiratory systems. So, for 2023 I will be swapping my usual can of something fizzy for this, a perfect pick-me-up after a cold sea dip or just for a daily boost of the good stuff.

While on the subject of hydration, we should all be drinking two-litres of water a

day. If you’re not a fan, like I am, try flavouring it with cucumber, mint or the fruit of your choice. On cold days, try it hot with a slice of lemon; it’s both cleansing and warm and counts towards your daily quota. That’s daytime hydration sorted, but what about when it comes to going out?

I think that goals are better achieved when they taste good and so opting from a non-alcoholic drink that is a treat in itself will make sure you don’t feel like you’re missing out.

have to sacrifice on taste when choosing an alcoholic alternative

Joe Thomson, Co-owner and Head Brewer at the Firebrand Brewing Company (firebrandbrewing.co.uk) says that he became interested in developing an alcoholfree beer through a personal desire to live a healthier lifestyle. “I wanted to cut down on alcohol without giving up beer,” he says. “I tried many different styles of alcohol-free beer but found them watery, thin and lacking flavour. They were often full of lactose to add depth too. So, I decided to brew one that provides everything I like, the first CORNWALL LIVING | 17

really great Cornish alcohol-free craft beer.” Shorebreak now outsells Firebrand’s flagship beer, Patchwork Rocket, and it’s no wonder as it comes in at only 26 calories per can versus 150 calories in a regular can of IPA!

If beer’s not your tipple of choice then Pentire Drinks (pentiredrinks.com) create a range of botanical, non-alcoholic spirits made by distilling plants native to the Cornish coastline. Beautifully bottled and best served with a premium tonic, I always feel this is a very grown-up drink in spite of its 0% ABV. Crafted in Cornwall for those who live an active lifestyle and want to make a healthier choice without compromising on taste, sipping a Pentire serve, whether it be a Coastal Spritz, a Pentire Gimlet or a traditional Seaward and tonic, awaking clearheaded will allow us all to seize each day with renewed vigour.

And finally, it can’t all be about abstinence; wellbeing is about treating yourself as well. You can do that in a sustainable and ethical way with Trelonk Molecular Wellbeing (trelonkwellbeing.com), creating essential oil products for body, mind and sleep. I can’t be without my Head Strong nasal inhaler, a deep breath of which helps cope with stress and nervous tension, while the topical massage oils help everything from muscles, soft tissue, joints and bones to chronic conditions. Sister company Wild Cornwall (wildcornwall.net) takes advantage of crops grown on the extra and unused space at Trelonk, along with foraged ingredients, to create their own beauty and food products. This corner of the Roseland is a veritable feast for the senses, creating guilt-free products that are good for both people and planet.

Whatever goals you set yourself this year, be kind to yourself. Change can be hard and often takes time, forgive yourself for mistakes. Remember, by creating just a few realistic goals, they can have a long-lasting impact on your mental health and happiness.

TAMARISK

Tamarisk is a remarkable opportunity to build the home of your dreams, just yards from the beach at Porthcothan Bay.

Nestled behind the sand dunes of Porthcothan Beach sits an exceptional chance to manifest the beach-side home of your dreams, with permission granted for a sustainable sixbedroom contemporary detached house to be built in this most stunning of settings.

Just yards from the waters’ edge, with phenomenal views reaching out to sea, Tamarisk has been conceived by innovative local architecture company Watershedd, with planning permission granted in November 2021. The result was a uniquely designed contemporary project utilising traditional elements to sympathetically blend into

the beach-side landscape, with proposed materials including natural timber cladding to maintain a rural barn aesthetic, soft stone cladding and a natural slate roof.

Extending to 4,133 square feet of stateof-the-art accommodation, Tamarisk will have six double bedrooms (five of which are en suite), a ground floor kitchen/dining and living space, boot room, larder, utility room and family shower room, with the first floor of Tamarisk focused around the quite spectacular uninterrupted views across the beach and out to sea.

The detached outbuilding provides supplementary accommodation including a media room, wet room and surf board storage, perfect for those looking for an active Cornish lifestyle by the sea. The proposed landscaping scheme will include Tamarisk bushes, marram grasses and beach sand to sympathetically embed the house within the local context and waterside position, so you can quite literally step out onto the beach itself to embrace the Cornish elements.

You’ll find Ladock just six miles east of the cathedral city of Truro and its central position within the county makes it ideal for accessing both south and north Cornwall coasts and beaches. Truro, which is renowned for its excellent high-street and independent shops, galleries, museum and popular restaurants also has a main-line railway line linking it to London Paddington.

Sunny Bank is a wonderful three-bedroom home, immaculately presented and occupying over an acre of grounds. The cottage exterior is swathed in climbing plants and the sheltered front garden affords a lovely place to sit on a sunny day. Enter through the stable door and an open staircase leads to the three bedrooms above. Original beams and open floor boards reflect the history of the house, with an exposed stone fireplace creating a cosy ambience in the living room and both the dining room and kitchen are sympathetically decorated. ST. AUSTELL BAY Discover

Award-winning property agents Rohrs & Rowe offer their take on the appeal of the St Austell Bay area.

From Gribbin Head in the east, extending to Chapel Point in the west, the magnificent St Austell Bay area includes the communities of Polkerris, Polmear, Carlyon Bay, Charlestown, Duporth, Porthpean, Trenarren, Pentewan and Mevagissey. The natural curvature of The Bay is part of its beauty and provides some protection from the English Channel, making it an excellent choice for numerous water sport activities and safe swimming, as well as being a firm family-favourite destination for holidays.

Sat on the water’s edge is the picturesque port of Charlestown. For those who are familiar with the books of Winston Graham and the two-television series of Poldark that they spawned, then it needs no introduction. It has also been used on numerous occasions as a backdrop to films such as Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland and The Eagle Has Landed starring Michael Caine. Its harbour dates back to the late 18th century when entrepreneur Charles Rashleigh developed it from a minor fishing village (West Polmear) into a port for the exportation of China Clay, that the wider St Austell area is so widely famed for.

Charlestown remains relatively unchanged since its construction, hence its appeal as a period location for movies and TV. It also hosts many excellent eateries and pubs as well as quaint places to stay.

Each location around The Bay is also home to a beach. It’s hard to recommend any particular one over another, as each has its own unique appeal. They range from the quaint beach at Polkerris to the private beach of Duporth, accessed by residents only via a coded gate. There are much wider stretches of sand at both Polmear and Pentewan, and Porthpean has a café and toy shop! You can also hire out kayaks and watercraft from various locations to make a sea-based exploration of the coast.

One of Cornwall’s main attractions lies just inland – the world-renowned eco park and educational hub – the Eden Project. Its reputation goes before it and should be on everyone’s bucket list. Over the summer, it is also host to many world class entertainment acts that in 2022 included Bryan Adams, Noel Gallagher, Stereophonics and Diana Ross to name just a few.

Around the area you’ll find some stunning properties which Rohrs & Rowe are marketing.

Methrose

The first is Methrose at Porthpean. The property is a very rare offering to the market, not only due to its magnificent position and views but also because it is unusual to find a fully single storey residence in such a prime location. Many of its rooms and also large areas of the garden are privy to what can only be described as spectacular sea views that stretch out across the waters of St Austell Bay to the magnificent and rugged coastline that disappears in to the distance.

Mevagissey is home to the spectacular clifftop house, Compass Point. Built in 2014, this exceptional architect-designed house enjoys truly world class views across St Austell Bay from its spectacular and dramatic location. The house enjoys three en-suite double bedrooms, with each benefitting from the magnificent sea views via floor to ceiling sliding doors, which also have access onto a full width outside balcony. The living area is a cavernous semi open-plan room comprising the living area, dining room and kitchen. The focal point though are the sea views via multiple floor to ceiling glazed windows and doors that run the entire width of this stunning room – the views can only really be compared to being onboard a large ship! Outside is a full width infinity terrace that provides a vast area

for outdoor entertaining or alfresco dining, providing some of the most spectacular sea views that you will find anywhere on the south coast of Cornwall. A further large terrace is home to a glazed dining pod and the large timber summer house. There is a lawned area that runs the width of the terraces, and three private parking spaces outside of the entrance gates to the property, with a further area of secure hardstanding providing room for further car parking or the storage of a boat.

Just under one mile in-land from the coast is the magnificent Penarwyn House. Built in 1895 by John De Cressy Treffry, High Sheriff of Cornwall, it is a beautiful and impeccably presented Victorian residence set in private grounds. The entrance driveway opens to reveal a broad courtyard and the imposing and handsome house makes a lasting first impression. The whole property is a showcase of interior design, cleverly displaying the size and flexibility of the accommodation at its best. Each room has its own individual styling, which combine as a whole to provide a truly exceptional and unique home. All of the rooms are all very generous – Victorian proportions provide high ceilings making the whole experience very grand. Upstairs the bedrooms are just as impressive, each with a very luxurious feel. In addition to the main accommodation there is a separate staircase leading to three very beautiful apartments that the current owner offers as holiday lettings.

So, if you are looking to buy a home either overlooking or within touching distance of the coast and you haven’t considered the St Austell Bay area, we would highly recommend a visit. Or, if you have a home here and are considering selling, make sure to get in touch to see how Rohrs & Rowe can help.

Here in Cornwall we have enjoyed an amazing summer this year and now that the colder winter months are upon us we are turning our attention to spending more cosy nights with the family by the fire. It’s not surprising then that you may well be looking for the best and most cost-effective way to heat your home.

Energy prices have risen and we are all looking to get the most out of the heating appliances we have around the house.

The team at Eden Hearth & Home have a wealth of knowledge and experience within the heating industry and will help you make an informed choice about the correct type of heating appliances to suit your needs. Whether you are looking for cost-effective whole house heating solutions, a high efficiency gas fire to give you a boost of heat or simply an eye-catching focal point, then you will not be disappointed with the huge range of fires and fireplaces the company have to offer its customers.

HOME 34 | CORNWALL LIVING
The team at Eden Hearth & Home are primed and ready to introduce you to the perfect way to stay cosy this winter, without compromising on your home’s aesthetic.
BELOW ê Electric radiators are easy to fit and control
é Keeping cosy, your way

We spoke to Brian, one of the team members, who told us that most of the fireplaces in the range can be made totally bespoke to the customers’ requirements, giving you a lot of flexibility to choose your preferred design in any type of materials. They also make hearths to measure, so no need for carpet replacement!

Brian also told us that they offer a complete design and installation service, giving each customer a full survey to ensure that the fireplace is made perfectly. Covering everything from chimney sweeping to plastering and electrics, you can sit back, relax and look forward to a cosy new fireplace.

With energy efficiency on everyone’s mind, you can also see the latest high-efficiency gas fires on display at the large showroom in Goonhavern. They have just recently introduced a brand-new range of fires that are up to 89% energy efficient, taking in less gas than your average fire but giving out plenty of heat. You can choose from modern or traditional designs and the range even includes a gas fire that looks exactly like a solid fuel stove, so if you want the look of a stove but don’t want to have the fuss of a real fire then it is the ideal solution, operated at the touch of a button with no need to load in coal or firewood.

Plus, they offer a wide range of electric fires and also specialize in media wall installation, ideal as a practical focal point in any room and can accommodate your TV and fireplace all in one. The large format fires now come with Wi-Fi capabilities and can even work with Alexa and Google, giving you voice control as well as Bluetooth capabilities and app controls. But for those that prefer a simpler solution, the company have plenty of other options available.

Why not pay them a visit to see for yourself? Open Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm and Saturday 10am to 3pm, the team will be there to introduce you to a multitude of possibilities.

FOR LIFE Designed

When it comes to creating an outdoor living space, having a company that can create the space of your dreams from the ground up is invaluable. With a one-stop solution, if each element is taken care of from the design and build to kitchen furniture, appliances and canopy, all you have to do is sit back and reap the benefits.

The heart of any outdoor living space is the cooking and prep area. Working with Italian company, Officine Fanesi Outdoor Kitchens, whose stainless-steel units combine style and function, Contemporary Outdoor Living offers a range of units. For a smaller space, the Via Nolfi 527 incorporates a gas hob, a fourburner barbecue with cupboards below and a further unit with an undermount sink and tap. Building on this, the Via Nolfi range can extend to include a fryer and even a woodfired barbeque unit and all are available as island versions.

Such is the versatility of an outdoor living space that one can be incorporated into any type of building aesthetic. For a country outdoor kitchen, a pergola-covered patio works well with a combination of natural elements including tiles, stone and wood. New builds or modern buildings benefit from

a more monochromatic palette, combining finishes such as stainless steel and granite countertops.

Each of our homes is unique and so there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to outdoor kitchen design. This is the beauty of working with a company that can supply all of the elements. Contemporary Outdoor Living has expertise in all areas and recently showcased their work at Grand Designs Live. The NEC in Birmingham played host to this event which has become the go-to exhibition for home inspiration and expert advice.

Joining hundreds of exhibitors from across the UK and further afield, the event showcased every imaginable product and service with free talks and expert advice available to visitors. Sectioned into project zones for easy navigation, Grand Build, Grand Kitchens and Bathrooms, Grand Interiors and Grand Bathrooms, the show proved that the best homes are the ones where you link the indoors with the outdoors.

COLD Beat the

We always believed that you couldn’t have carpet with underfloor heating...

At this time of year, it’s fair to say that removing ourselves from the warmth of our bedcovers when the morning alarm sounds becomes a chore we’d prefer not to have to deal with. The knowledge of the frosty windscreens and icy roads that await us during our school runs and commutes is enough to encourage even the brightest morning person to guiltily hit the snooze button! But it needn’t be that way, in fact stepping out of bed onto the reassuring, toasty warmth of an underfloor heated carpet can return those would-be-bright-eyed risers to their usual bushy-tailed selves.

The first is that carpeted flooring does take slightly longer to heat up than harder floor alternatives, however once it’s warm, it stays warm for longer. Another is the importance of tog rating, which simply indicates the effectiveness of a material’s insulation. Choosing a carpet with a rating of no higher than 2.5 should ensure your heating works efficiently. And when we say 2.5, this should be the total combined rating of your carpet and underlay – a carpet with a rating of 2.5 that’s then laid over underlay will be too heavy.

South West Carpets

recommend Cormar’s wool, wool-blend and polypropylene carpets, all of which meet the requirements of underfloor heating with tog values well within the recommended tolerances.

At the same time, we are all looking for ways in which to improve efficiency when it comes to heating our homes, particularly with the cost-of-living crisis placing more of a burden than ever on our wallets. Underfloor heating is one solution that can help – in fact, according to the experts at Warmup (warmup. co.uk), while traditional radiators need to be heated to a high temperature of between 65 and 75 degrees in order to heat a room effectively, underfloor heating need only run at 29 degrees or less, consuming less energy and helping to keep energy bills lower. And if you’re thinking ‘that’s all well and good, but I want to have carpet on my floor and that won’t work with underfloor heating’, worry not! Carpet can work with underfloor heating, but there are a few things to consider.

If you’re unsure, South West Carpets can help, with an immense range of beautiful carpets for you to choose from and a well of knowledge to help you make the most of your investment. Most importantly, they understand just how big a difference having warm toes can make to your morning, so if you’re fed up of hitting the snooze button one too many times and want to change the way you heat your home, creating a sanctuary that will leave you ready to face the day ahead before inviting you home to relax in the evening, why not get in touch? Better still, pop into the showroom and see for yourself how the team can help.

There is no doubt about it, the past 12 months have been a whirlwind of activity for one of Cornwall’s leading self-catering agencies, Cornish Cottage Holidays. Despite the turbulent times, the team have seen a fabulous increase in their portfolio, and are now proud to have over 700 holiday homes – a much-needed expansion, given the huge customer demand they’re seeing for selfcatering accommodation. In 2022 Cornish Cottage Holidays accommodated over 60,000 holiday makers during the course of the season, and with great 2023 advance booking levels, particularly for May half term, June and August, the team are hopeful demand will only continue to grow.

However, with the recession and various other environmental and political factors at play, Phil Pascoe, Operations Manager, believes there are some emerging booking trends holiday home owners should be aware of going forward, to ensure their property achieves its full booking and income potential.

“One significant new trend is the rise in short breaks, with around 44% of Brits now preferring to book multiple staycations –or ‘save-cations’ – instead of one summer holiday abroad. I would highly recommend considering accepting short breaks, remembering two bookings in place of a

week-long booking can mean increased revenue. We've also seen a growing trend for last minute getaways. Since the start of summer 2022, there has been a 76% increase in bookings made within 14 days of the arrival date.

With 35% of bookings now including dogs, 26% of Brits looking for sustainable holiday home options and 38% now more likely to work from their accommodation, holidaying has certainly changed! Owners who can cater for any or all of these guest requirements will ensure their property stands out from the crowd in Cornwall’s increasingly competitive holiday letting landscape.”

If you are thinking of buying a holiday home, the dedicated, locally-based New Property team at Cornish Cottage Holidays would be delighted to offer free no-obligation advice on choosing the perfect bolthole. STAR T YOUR ADVENTURE

With properties all over Cornwall, you’re sure to find your dream escape within this charming collection.

The Cornish Holiday Company, established by Sarah and Emma in 2020, traces its genesis back to Sarah’s first company, Turnaround Property Management, and Emma’s expertise in dealing with the general public. When they met and became friends, it wasn’t going to be long before a joint venture would take off, and a collection of stunning Cornish properties would come together under a knowledgeable and trusted curation.

Having both travelled widely over the years, Sarah and Emma know the importance of accommodation being presented to a high standard, and this is certainly something that all The Cornish Holiday Company properties have in common. For instance, The Old Cobbler's in the sleepy fishing village of Port Isaac draws you into what was previously the village Cobbler's shop. Now a modern groundfloor flat, the charm of original architecture contrasts beautifully with the sleek kitchen and bathroom. The Old Cobbler’s offers its inhabitants the chance to explore Port Isaac, promising to wait for you after a long day of adventure and making memories with the people you love.

Or, perhaps a traditional fisherman’s cottage would be more to your taste? Sleeping eight, Geranium Cottage is beautifully furnished to meet the practical and aesthetic needs of

its temporary tenants, offering a peaceful haven, silently encouraging relaxation and connection with the ones you love most. Whatever you might be looking for in your Cornish escape, the wide and carefully chosen collection of properties kept by The Cornish Holiday Company is sure to contain your dream abode – for a week or so! As Cornwall is a dog walker’s paradise, The Cornish Holiday Company also has many properties within their portfolio that allow canine companions to stay, so no one need be left behind. With breath-taking beauty at every turn, there really is no better place to take a holiday in England. With stunning beaches resembling the Caribbean on sunny days and historic ports along the coastline, there is so much to discover. Spanning across Cornwall, from Port Isaac, Padstow and Polzeath to Porthleven, St Minver and Rock, with The Cornish Holiday Company there’s a cosy bolthole for you to lay your head, wherever your Cornish adventure may take you.

Cottage

“The cottage was so clean, so cosy and in such a great walkable location. Evenings beside the wood-stove made memories we’ll never forget. Port Isaac is an amazing gem, and staying at this wonderful cottage made our visit easy and comfortable. We’re sure to return again!”

Guest review, Lundy Cottage

“What an amazing find, right in the centre of beautiful Port Issac. Parking was easy, the cottage had a lovely charm, the real fire was amazing and was kitted out with everything we needed. We even heard the Fisherman's Friends who'd shown up in the village at 11pm one night as we were getting into bed, and we ran across to the Golden Lion to watch an intimate gig! It really was a once in a lifetime experience.”

of an Elite West retreat. Formally known as The Lighthouse, the property was designed by renowned architect Ian Hogarth, whose London home featured on Grand Designs. It is an effortlessly chic holiday home that has recently been transformed by interior designer Chloe Morris. We asked Chloe about her approach to re-designed The Blue House interiors: “I grew up on a farm in a very old house by the sea. I've lived in cottages and my whole family surf, and I think if you've lived that life, it is possible to inject that into your work. People love coming and feeling they've had a taste of real Cornwall. They love a sense of authenticity and I like to think that I can offer that. I want guests to leave their holiday thinking they really felt as if they were at home. When viewed like this, interior design becomes truly aspirational.”

Adopting this approach to The Blue House which sleeps eight guests, Chloe has created the perfect combination of cool Californian beach house fused with calm Cornish warmth, curating the space to highlight the architectural design whilst softening it to achieve the look and feel of a warm, modern and inspiring beach house. Every effort has been made to source locally with high quality soft furnishings throughout the property, including a sink-into Cornish sofa that was made to measure.

The incredible hand-crafted dining table is fused from oak and glass featuring flotsam and jetsam from Bude’s beaches and is surrounded by striking vintage retro Italian dining chairs. The walls are adorned with stunning artwork by renowned Cornish artists Nina Brook and Sue Reed, bringing inspiring elements of the coast to the interior. Bedroom comfort comes in the form of a bespoke mango king size bed in the master bedroom and a cosy twin room, both of which have been softened by warm wool rugs and Lollipop stripe throws. Colour is used throughout with turquoise and blues a nod to the incredible ocean views from the property, while a pop of orange reflects those incredible north coast sunsets that set the sky ablaze.

With outdoor living in mind, The Blue House boasts a secure wetsuit store and useful outdoor shower for rinsing off salty bodies and sand toes. Lawned patios and a pretty balcony are made for enjoying a morning coffee or sundowner as the day draws to an end. Bude centre is just a short stroll from the property for boutique browsing and delightful dining.

If your holiday relaxation comes in the form of something more active, then there are golf links on the doorstep as is access to the South West Coast Path… and of course, Crooklets Beach is just a pebble’s throw away making The Blue House a unique, luxury Cornish retreat.

A year to REMEMBER

Well, what a year we have had in the restaurants. It’s been a brilliant season and we’ve been lucky to have had so many visitors to Cornwall, enjoying all we have to offer in this great county with all our fine restaurants, cafes, tea rooms, produce, beaches, natural beauty, and people. Also, the summer was long and hot and that contributed to a fantastic long season of holidaymakers continuing to come long after the school holidays had ended.

Despite the difficulties faced by businesses around Cornwall and the UK, there has been a definite increase in the popularity of the Cornish ‘staycation’. Cornwall relies on the tourist trade, and it’s been great to see that people are able to enjoy our beautiful county

FOODIE

now without all the restrictions we have had over the last few years. We are all hoping that Cornwall has put itself firmly in the calendar for many more to come and enjoy. It was very uncertain times for hospitality during the pandemic and our trade was by far the hardest hit; it seemed like we would never be able to open normally. The stopstart lifting of restrictions was really difficult for all of us, along with not knowing what the next rules would be or how they might affect our restaurants and cafes. After all that, we learned to roll with the punches; we all became more resilient and found that we could adapt to whatever was going to be thrown at us next. Strangely, that seems like a long time ago now.

The next challenge for hospitality was the lack of staff wanting to work in our sector after Brexit. We were all suddenly left with a huge hole in our restaurant rotas, which meant lot of places had to reduce their hours and miss out on a lot of the summer business. We’ve seen a huge rise in food prices that has affected all our food costs; fish prices doubled overnight; farmed products costs increased, and the costs have been passed onto the restauranteurs. The war in Ukraine saw the worlds grain prices rise steeply and there is now a supposed egg shortage (created by supermarkets) and these are the basic ingredients to so many dishes that we cook every day! Prices of European wine and ingredients have all gone through the roof due to Brexit, and electricity prices for some of us in our sector are going up by a terrifying 600%. To combat these challenges, restaurants have had to slim down their offering because of the need to keep costs down, and manage the lack of labour. It has been hard times, but we hope that customers can be a bit more understanding that we are all trying our best to give them the best meal and service that we possibly can.

We have seen many changes to Kota this year with the new art, crockery, and tasting menus, and while Kota will be closed for a small refurbishment, we will returning with a fresh, early spring menu where we will be looking to focus more on our foraging, pickling, ageing, and fermenting. We are already getting excited for a small break and then getting back with an exciting new menu. Kota Kai has been open since 2011 and it has been so much fun having the restaurant in its current form, and now we’re looking at freshening up the concept for Kai too with a new menu to start our spring season.

As always, the Porthleven Food Festival is a firm favourite in the calendar year, and we can’t wait to get involved for 2023. Wine and beer nights with a matching tasting menu in Kota Kai will feature all weekend, with Kota championing a seafood menu with a wine and champagne bar during the day time. It really is something to look forward too.

Our New Years’ resolution this year is to bring our waste down even further to the very bear minimum. We try our best every day, but we’re resolute to try even harder to encourage our suppliers to do more to reduce the impact on our environment. We hope more can come and join us to make a difference. Here’s to 2023!

9 DR MARTÍN RASKOVSKY

Purple Reflection by Dr Martín Raskovsky

After taking up photography from the age of nine Dr Martín Raskovsky realised that what he captured on film fell short of the emotional response he felt for his subject. It wasn’t enough for him to capture a stunning sunset or dappled forest glade – he wanted more. With some experimentation, in a home-based darkroom, he was able to modify and manipulate reality to correspond with his reaction. And with the arrival of digital photography, accompanied by complex image manipulation applications on his computer, he was able to represent his personal vision more succinctly than ever.

Making a STATEMENT

With a mini-budget that was almost entirely reversed and a new set of tax announcements in the government’s Autumn Statement, chartered accountants and tax advisors RRL debunk the debacle.

On November 17th, the Chancellor (our 4th of 2022!), made the Autumn Statement announcement that the government desperately wanted to rebuild its reputation regarding public finances and to attempt to provide the markets with a degree of confidence following a disastrous mini-budget.

Tax Partner at RRL, Steve Maggs explains: “From a purely tax perspective, many may be excused for thinking the announcements weren’t so bad, however, things like the freezing of tax thresholds when we are experiencing rates of inflation that we are, are

significant tax rises in all but name. Our initial summary of the headline tax announcements is as follows.

“There will be a freeze on many tax thresholds until the 2028/29 tax year, including the income tax personal allowance, higher-rate income tax threshold, NIC thresholds and bands, and inheritance tax standard nil-rate band and residence nil-rate band. This will bring more into the scope of higher-rate income tax, more paying more income tax, more losing their child benefit and personal allowance, and more estates paying inheritance tax. While this makes for

LIFESTYLE 68 | CORNWALL LIVING

sombre reading, it does highlight a need for careful tax planning going forward.”

The additional-rate income tax threshold (at which the 45% income tax rate – 39.35% for dividend income – is payable) will reduce from £150,000 to £125,140 from the 2023/24 tax year onwards, showing a stark contrast to the mini-budget on 23rd September 2022 where the additional-rate was to be scrapped: “There are some steps higher-rate taxpayers can take to protect themselves from the effective tax rise,” says Steve. “One way of mitigating exposure to higher and additional rate income tax is by making pension contributions, as these currently provide tax relief at the marginal rate. Salary sacrifice, where offered, is also a good idea as it not only offers relief on income tax, but also on National Insurance. No changes to higher-rate income tax relief on pension contributions were announced.

The capital gains tax annual exemption will reduce from the current £12,300 for individuals to £6,000 for the 2023/24 tax year, and then further reduced to £3,000 in 2024/25 meaning more individuals will have to pay capital gains tax, and therefore more to report capital gains that previously didn’t need to be reported. Steve adds: “There are various ways to reduce your capital gains liability, no least of which is if you are planning on making a large capital gain, it would make sense to do this before the end of the 2022/23 tax year as to maximise the current higher exemption.” No increases in the capital gains tax rates were announced, as was strongly rumoured.

Dividend allowance will be reduced from £2,000 to £1,000 for the 2023/24 tax year, and further reduce to £500 for the 2024/25 tax year, making it a 10th of the original dividend allowance. This will mean more individuals will be required to pay income tax on dividend income. However, for

business owners, who can decide whether they pay themselves in the form of salary or dividends, dividends are still likely to be more tax efficient than a salary, despite the reductions of the dividend allowance in both of the next two tax years. Thankfully, there were some good news stories in the Statement. One which will be welcomed by many businesses in Cornwall is that the Business Rates multiplier is to be frozen for another year (in 2023/24), and the Retail, Hospitality and Leisure relief scheme is being extended from 50% to 75% for 2023/24, up to £110,000 per business. Tariff suspensions on over 100 goods were announced for a period of two years “to help put downward pressure on costs for UK producers” and the VAT registration and deregistration thresholds will be frozen until April 2026. The National Living Wage and National Minimum Wage will be increased from 1st April 2023, making the National Living Wage for those aged 23 and over £10.42. “It’s at times like these,” concludes Steve, “that experienced, competent and proactive tax advice is invaluable. Our tax team here in Cornwall can help you to reduce the tax burden on your business and aid in tackling the complexities of the modern tax system.

YOU FIRSTPutting

As the new year begins, Cornwall Medical Group (CMG) has an exciting raft of plans to help you put your health first in 2023.

Whilst CMG’s name may be new to some (having been set up in 2021), the expertise on offer is not. Theirs is an organic progression of the hugely successful Probus Surgical Centre; renowned as one of the county’s leading NHS and private surgical centres since 1995. CMG was set up to offer Cornwall a range of private medical services including vasectomies, hernia repair, cataract surgery and skin lesion removal.

CMG has a dedicated Sports Medicine Doctor who offers advanced solutions for a range of musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions, including osteoarthritis, acute sports injuries and knee, elbow and shoulder pain. The clinic provides a weight-management service and a range of skin and hair treatments for conditions including rosacea, acne and acne scarring, hyperpigmentation, hair loss and alopecia. In addition, they provide doctor-led aesthetic treatments for skin and hair rejuvenation, wrinkle relaxation, skin boosters and more.

We tracked down director, Spencer Casey, to find out how CMG are planning to broaden their service for 2023, to provide an even greater level of care. “We knew that Cornwall Medical Group would provide vital private

medical services for Cornwall. We could see a real need for fast diagnostics and more rapid private treatment options within the County’s current healthcare provision.” He continued, “Since its inception, CMG has grown to meet the needs of the Cornish community but we are now in a place to expand our offering further.

CMG operates out of two centres; one in Probus and one from St Clare’s Medical Centre in Penzance. We already offer state-ofthe-art procedures and treatments with our team of expert practitioners and we hope that 2023 will allow us to expand, both in terms of our premises and with our list of services. Not only will CMG be able to provide an even better level of care for our patients, but we will also continue to support our local community by lessening the strain on our local healthcare, re-investing in the NHS strands of our business and providing jobs for local health workers.”

So, how could Cornwall Medical Group help you to feel better in 2023? We look more closely at some of their services and the treatments on offer to patients at CMG. The surgical service is provided by an outstanding team of Surgeons, Doctors, Nurses and Patient Coordinators. They are surgical experts in the

South West, offering a range of treatments and surgical solutions with minimal recovery time.

With patient care sitting at the heart of everything they do, Probus Surgical Centre and CMG’s post-operative surveys consistently show exceptional levels of patient satisfaction, averaging over 99% (September 2020).

When it comes to pain and injury management CMG offer a Musculoskeletal (MSK) service that provides evidencebased therapies for the treatment of joints and muscles. They have a dedicated Sports Medicine Doctor, who can help in the treatment of conditions including osteoarthritis, tendinopathy, frozen shoulders, repetitive strain injuries and recovery from sprains and strains, fractures and surgical procedures.

The MSK service is unique in that they offer a complete pathway from diagnostics to assessment and treatment, all under one roof. The focus is on proven, fast and efficient methods that are minimally invasive and promote rapid return-to-activity times. Their team believes that you shouldn’t be left struggling with painful joints or muscles or inconsistent approaches to your rehabilitation.

They are also proud to run the county’s only holistic weight management service, which combines prescription weight loss medication with cognitive, nutritional and movement support. The service is only available to those with a BMI of over 30. It is dedicated to helping people to lose weight for good,

by making changes to their lifestyles that positively impact their health and well-being.

CMG also offers a range of treatments including cryotherapy, skin lesion removal, and Plasma Rich Platelet Therapy (PRP) for a range of skin and hair complaints from skin tags, moles and lesions, acne and acne scarring, pigmentation, rosacea, thinning hair, alopecia and male-pattern baldness. These therapies sit alongside a portfolio of aesthetic treatments for skin rejuvenation including wrinkle relaxation, skin booster injections and facials.

After deciding to sell our our unique coastal home and talking to several different Estate Agents, someone suggested that we also speak to Rohrs and Rowe. After looking at examples of their excellent marketing and speaking to them we were very impressed and decided to sell through them. We were absolutely delighted that we chose them as they swiftly found multiple buyers that created considerable competition that culminated in us achieving an excellent price. They kept in close touch with us throughout the process of selling, which was very helpful and reassuring. We were very pleased with their service and are very happy to recommend them.

Riverbank | Restronguet Point

We recently sold our home through Rohrs & Rowe and were very pleased with the excellent service they provided. Matthew Rowe was always available to discuss any issues that arose and he provided well rounded advice as to the best action to overcome them and he always had our best interest at heart. The marketing material they produced was excellent and they advertised us regularly in many publications both here in Cornwall, as well as across the country - targeting the known high response areas. We have made many moves in our lifetime and this was handled in a most professional and friendly manner and we would be very happy to recommend them.

Trenwheal Barn | Porthleven

We contacted Rohrs & Rowe to discuss a marketing strategy for our barn overlooking Porthleven. We took Matthew’s advice and he arranged a fantastic professional photo shoot which really did highlight all of the unique features of our home. The house went ‘live’ on a Thursday and following 15 viewings, we received 6 offers all in excess of the ‘offers over’ price by the following Tuesday. Matthew & Jason kept us fully appraised of developments every step of the way and we were absolutely delighted with their proactive approach from day one. Needless to say, we would very happily and unreservedly recommend their fantastic services to anybody wishing to market their Cornwall home. We honestly believe they are the very best at what they do and will certainly maximise the sale price of any quality Cornish home with their very professional and proactive approach.

Trencreek Farmhouse | Roseland Peninsula

We have just sold for a second time through Rohrs & Rowe and we would thoroughly recommend them. The team were great throughout our sales process, having the trust of both seller and buyers and also very proactive in moving things along - especially when our buyers were on the other side of the world in Australia! Always sensible, level headed and a calm and friendly voice to speak to. If you are looking to sell in 2023, please contact us

BAITING FOR hope

In a bid to share a healthy mindfulness in difficult times, Justin Keight explains why fishing is so much more than just a hobby at Tight Lines.

EXPERIENCE

Why do people go fishing? The answer is quite simple. Anglers have unlimited amounts of hope. It is this hope that soon becomes a focus that evolves into a habit, which makes way for an incredibly wonderful pastime. Justin Keight, founder of Tight Lines, is one of those anglers full of said hope. An experienced fishing guide within his own outdoor adventure business, Cornwall Adventures, Justin envisaged a way of teaching people a key life skill whilst helping those that are struggling with mental health. Thus, in the summer of this year, Tight Lines was born.

The main focus of this community project is set on those of adult age who are experiencing difficulty and issues with mental health, including PTSD, anxiety, stress and depression. Through regular meetings and angling workshops, Tight Lines brings likeminded individuals together, learning and sharing new skills, whilst creating its very own angling community.

DISCOVER MORE...

If you’d like to be a part of this amazing opportunity to seek hope and reacquaint yourself with mindfulness, or you’d just like to find out how you can help, make sure to join Justin at Tight Lines’ Kick-Off Meeting at Wendron Football Club (TR13 0EH)

on 16th January at 7.30pm, everyone’s welcome!

Tight Lines is a Cornwall based nonprofit Community Interest Company, providing mental health support to the people of Cornwall, using the wonderful sport of fishing as the vehicle. Sea angling from the magical Cornish coast can really help boost mood and mindfulness, as surrounding yourself with nature has been shown to have a positive impact on mental wellbeing. Focusing on your rod or float, as well as striving to improve your fishing skills, helps to relax both your body and mind.

The project will also look to work alongside and support a range of Cornish businesses creating fundraising events for Tight Lines and other worthy local causes through feast nights and happenings throughout Cornwall. If you are a business and would like to work alongside Tight Lines to help to improve the lives of the people living in Cornwall, make sure to get in touch. This social project is more than just a fishing society. It’s about bringing the community together and helping as many people in Cornwall as possible, using our biggest ally – the sea.
