Welcome
From the Editor
to the latest edition of Cornwall Living!
There’s much excitement in the Cornwall Living office this issue as we announce the winners of our Cornwall Living Awards 2024. Voted for by our readers, followers and subscribers across ten categories, the winners will each receive a stunning and unique award created by world-renowned glass fusion artist Jo Downs. Turn the page for a full list of winners and award sponsors and be sure to look out for our next issue where we will be hearing from all of the wonderful businesses who were in receipt of an award.
Our home section is packed full of interior inspiration if you’re looking to give your house a makeover this winter. South West Carpets (page 23) introduce us to a new Amtico flooring range that can elevate any room in the home. Being both durable and stylish, the Form range is sure to be the talk of the town. Looking to ward off the winter chills? Then Wendron Stoves have a sustainable yet sophisticated alternative to a traditional woodburing stove that we’ll think you’ll love – find out more from page 24.
This time of year is when our thoughts turn to comfort food and Jude Kereama, chef patron of restaurants Kota and Kota Kai, doesn’t disappoint with his recipe for an ultimate short-rib cottage pie (page 32). Why not wash it down with the much-acclaimed proper Job 0.5% from St Austell Brewery (page 31)? This well-bodied tasty low alcohol IPA is set to take the drinks market by storm.
That’s not all... this issue has begun our countdown to the big day! With only 70 sleeps to go to the big day, we’re also delighted to bring you our Christmas Giving supplement (from page 35), where you’ll find a host of ideas and inspiration for gifting this Christmas.
There’s nothing quite like Christmas in Cornwall, but if you can’t make it down for the big day, then why not consider an out-of-season escape ahead of the celebrations? I’ve selected a few of my favourite places to stay in winter from page 15. Some are wonderful for wave watching as the storms hit, while others offer tranquil rural retreats away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. What they all have in common is a cosy place to hunker down after a winter’s day exploring all that Cornwall has to offer.
...happy reading!

A hobby that got out of hand
When Gavin, from Bodmin, started collecting football programmes, it was a little hobby, but it mushroomed into a massive collection. Dating from the 1950s onwards, a few programmes suddenly became thousands. “The greater number of programmes date from the 1970s, 80s and 90s,” says Gavin, recently a patient at Mount Edgcumbe Hospice. “But I’ve decided now’s the time to donate them to Cornwall Hospice Care. The retail team has already collected a van load!”
A Plymouth Argyle supporter, Gavin says one programme has eluded him. When Argyle played Birmingham in 1961, someone from the crowd threw a banana at the referee and Argyle was given a one-match home ban. Their subsequent game against Ipswich had to be moved to Torquay at the last minute, so the programme was only one sheet.
Gavin’s managed to sell some of his collection for good money. “I got £150 for a programme for a World Cup tournament played in Germany in 1972. It was in a box of 250 programmes I got from a guy in Teignmouth.”
Gavin’s wife Wendy sadly passed away at Mount Edgcumbe Hospice in June of this year. “She received such amazing care and it’s my way of saying thank you. I’m being cared for by the team now so there’s double the reason for giving away my collection to this wonderful charity.”

Building up a range of collections over the decades, it has just breathed new life into one of its most successful – the Form range.

Choose an efficientHEATING SOLUTION
With winter approaching, the search for a reliable, efficient heating solution takes on a more pressing urgency. With homeowners increasingly seeking alternatives to traditional heating methods, Jøtul pellet stoves emerge as a logical choice for several compelling reasons. At Wendron Stoves, they are proud to offer these innovative heating systems, which combine environmental responsibility with exceptional performance. Here’s why.
Why Jøtul?
Jøtul, a pioneer in the stove industry for over 170 years, brings a legacy of craftsmanship
and reliability. Their pellet stoves are not just aesthetically pleasing; they represent a commitment to sustainable heating. These stoves utilise wood pellets, which are made from compressed sawdust, offering a renewable source of energy that minimises your carbon footprint. By opting for a Jøtul, you’re not just heating your home; you’re actively participating in the fight against climate change.
Efficiency meets convenience
One of the main features of Jøtul pellet stoves is their capability to embrace an effective burn. Unlike traditional wood-burning stoves, which can be inefficient and require constant
monitoring, pellet-burning stoves provide a consistent and controllable heat output. With advanced technology, they achieve a high-efficiency rating, often exceeding 90%. This means more warmth for less fuel, reducing both your environmental impact and heating bills.
Moreover, Jøtul pellet stoves are designed for convenience. They can be easily operated with a thermostat, allowing you to set and maintain your desired temperature effortlessly. The automated feeding system ensures that pellets are supplied consistently, eliminating the need for constant refuelling. This level of convenience is perfect for those with a busy lifestyle and who are conscious of not wanting to overheat an empty property.
Designed to enhance your home
Beyond their functional benefits, Jøtul pellet stoves also add significant aesthetic value to your home. Available in various designs, colours and finishes, they lend themselves to fit within the majority of home interiors. Whether you prefer a classic cast-iron look or a modern sleek design, there will be a stove to suit your style.
Economic advantages
In addition to being environmentally friendly, Jøtul pellet stoves can also save you money in the long run. As energy prices continue to fluctuate, the installation of one can provide a welcome hedge against rising costs. Pellet fuel is generally more stable in price compared to fossil fuels, offering you greater predictability in your heating expenses. Additionally, many local councils, governments and organisations offer incentives for homeowners who install renewable heating sources, potentially mitigating the cost of the initial investment.
Safety first
Safety is a top concern for any heating system and Jøtul takes this very seriously. Their pellet stoves are engineered with advanced safety features to prevent overheating and ensure safe operation. With a focus on quality and performance, their products meet stringent safety standards, providing peace of mind for you and your family.
The environmental impact
Making the move to a pellet-fed stove isn’t just about personal comfort; it’s also about making a positive impact on the environment. By utilising renewable resources, you reduce reliance on fossil fuels and contribute to a cleaner planet. Pellet stoves also produce significantly lower emissions compared to traditional heating methods, helping to improve air quality in your home and community.
Make the change
As we face the realities of climate change and rising energy costs, the choice of heating system becomes more critical than ever. Jøtul pellet stoves offer a combination of efficiency, convenience, safety and design appeal that is hard to beat. At Wendron Stoves, they believe in providing their customers with the best options for a sustainable future.
Why not make the responsible choice today and explore the range of Jøtul pellet stoves at Wendron Stoves?

A visit to Radmore’s in Truro unearths a veritable treasure trove of antique treasures and functional art.
Specialising in exquisite pieces of the finest antique jewellery, Radmore’s, run by David and Debbie, offers a unique curated collection. From Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian pieces through to Art Deco, vintage and modern items, the selection is oustanding. As Debbie aptly describes it, “It’s like stepping back in time.” The jewellery, often sourced from local families looking to part with cherished heirlooms or collections, embodies a history and level of craftsmanship that modern pieces simply cannot replicate.
David, with his extensive background in antiques, and Debbie, an accomplished interior designer, have merged their talents beautifully. Their travels across France have not only enriched their own home but have now enhanced Radmore’s, making it a destination for those who appreciate the artistry of bygone eras.
Recently, Radmore’s has expanded its offerings with the launch of Belle Maison, a new venture that reflects Debbie and David’s deep-rooted passion for antique treasures. In a
dedicated room, you’ll discover stunning items sourced from brocantes and château sales from across the picturesque La Rochelle area of rural France. This new area, which debuted just a month ago, showcases not only their eye for beauty but also their commitment to bringing a taste of French elegance to the Duchy.
Adding to the allure of this unique furniture collection is the fact that each piece is adorned with stunning artwork by the talented Christie Rock, who says: “I have this fantastic opportunity to paint and work in such a stunning showroom! You must come and visit for yourself to see the variety of hand-picked, restored French furniture.”
At Radmore’s, every visit promises discovery – whether it’s a bejewelled Victorian brooch or a charmingly distressed armoire.

SEEINGListening and
The seventh instalment of the Cornwall Hi-Fi and Home Cinema Show has just gone, and this year was undoubtedly the biggest and best yet.
Organised and hosted by HBH Woolacotts and held on the 4th and 5th October at the Royal Cornwall Showground the event was extremely well received by visitors, customers and exhibitors alike.
Since its inception in 2017, the Cornwall Hi-Fi Show has evolved significantly, prompting the team at HBH Woolacotts to enhance its venue.
The addition of a marquee, affectionately dubbed the “TV Tent,” allowed for more exhibitors while maintaining the Pavilion Centre's exceptional atmosphere and hospitality. This setup not only expanded the range of brands showcased, including LG, Samsung, Panasonic, and Sonos, but also created a distinct separation between TV and Hi-Fi areas, enhancing the overall visitor experience.
This year’s show featured no less than six UK or world-first product unveilings, highlighting cutting-edge innovations. Among these was the Cyrus 40 Series, a sleek range of compact 2-channel separates that impressed attendees with their design and sound quality. The Arcam Radia Phase 2 showcased premium streaming amplifiers, with some models not expected until 2025. Roksan revealed the latest in its renowned Caspian series, while Ruark debuted the R610 and Sabre-R, heralding a return to its classic 2-channel roots. DALI also showcased its Rubikore Loudspeakers, elegantly finished in maroon, while KEF launched the latest
Q-Series, exhibited in collaboration with Yamaha for a budget-friendly immersive home theatre experience.
Other brand-new launches included Monitor Audio, who presented both the Gold Series and the new Studio89 speakers, renowned for their compact yet detailed sound. Additionally, Wiim unveiled the Wiim Ultra, a versatile yet high quality alternative to wireless home audio.
The Cornwall Hi-Fi Show has established itself as a key event for product launches, drawing brands eager to showcase their latest innovations and engage with customers across the South West. This year, Cyrus Audio received the “Adrian Dykes Award” for the best room, featuring its new 40-Series paired with Audio Physic ‘SPARK’ speakers, while LG and Ruark Audio received Special Recognition awards.
As the premier destination for Hi-Fi and home cinema enthusiasts in the region, HBH Woolacotts offers many products from attending brands in its showrooms in Wadebridge, St Austell and Plymouth, allowing customers to experience top-quality audio in a comfortable setting coupled with expert guidance.

BIG TASTE, low alcohol
St Austell Brewery launches a low-alcohol beer that is set to redefine the beverage market.
St Austell Brewery, an independent, family-owned business established in Cornwall in 1851, has just unveiled its latest innovation in the beer market: Proper Job 0.5%, its first low-alcohol beer under the popular Proper Job IPA brand. Known for its award-winning range of beers like Tribute Pale Ale, Proper Job IPA, and Korev Lager, St Austell Brewery’s products have long been staples in pubs and supermarkets nationwide. The company operates over 160 pubs, inns, and hotels across the West Country, and with its acquisition of Bath Ales in 2016, it has expanded its brewing capacity to include both St Austell and Bath breweries.
Having spent over two years refining the recipe for Proper Job 0.5%, a low-alcohol version of its flagship IPA, it launched on 10th October. The release responds to the growing demand for no and low-alcohol beverages, a trend that has surged over the past five years. It retains the bold, signature flavours of an original and authentic IPA, using Cascade, Willamette, and Chinook hops to deliver citrus, grapefruit and pineapple notes in a clean and crisp brew, but with just 0.5% alcohol.
Brewing Director Georgina Young shared that the brewery was determined to create a low-alcohol IPA that still embodied the punchy flavour of Proper Job. After extensive consumer testing, Proper Job 0.5% emerged as the overwhelming favourite when compared to competitors in the category. She says, “We wouldn’t settle for anything less than a wellbodied, tasty IPA without the alcohol, and we’ve finally perfected a recipe which has nailed that.”
The release of this new thirst-quenching beverage comes at a perfect time, with increasing numbers of consumers opting for moderation and a rise in non-alcoholic drink consumption in pubs. Proper Job 0.5% offers a full-flavoured option for those observing Sober October or gearing up for Dry January. Launching into the on trade in a 500ml bottle from October 10th it will also be available to order online via the St Austell Brewery shop and across its pub estate from October 14th. And with can and draught formats to follow in the months to come, St Austell Brewery is poised to make an impact in the growing no/low-alcohol beer market.

When days shorten, nights darken and the temperatures cool, sometimes all we need to cheer us up is a big bowl of wintery food and a crackling fire.
While winter is pretty mild in Porthleven, blue skies and calm seas can be followed by driving rain and full-on south-westerly gales that can blow you off your feet. On days like this, there is nothing more comforting than a hearty soup, stew or pot roast to warm up your body and soul. I always use my slow cooker in winter as it is so great for cooking stews, curry and other braised dishes that take time. It does mean you have to prepare your meal before you go out for the day, but you get to return home to the aromas of a delicious dinner when you get back. The great thing about slow cookers is that you can braise so many different kinds of meat with many different cuisines. Think of beef short ribs Korean style, Indian curry braised lamb shanks, French-style braised ox cheeks with red wine sauce, Moroccan tagine, bolognese, Peking pork ribs, coq au vin… the list is endless. You can get pretty experimental with the dishes adding different spices and herbs to your liking and serving with rice, mash, polenta or pulses. We still have plenty to forage in November
Words by Jude Kereama
to make it a worthwhile effort to get outside. With things such as nettle tops, Alexander’s, three-cornered leek, wild cress, mustard cress, pennywort, mushrooms, chestnuts, sloe berries, quince and the last of the damsons to fill our baskets. It’s a great time to start making a sloe gin, or maybe a damson vodka for a Christmas tipple or present. The seafood is really abundant at this time of year if the weather allows the boats to go out. Shellfish is prime as well with oysters, mussels, scallops and clams now at their best. Of course, there is also plenty of game around with deer fattened up on berries as well as game birds such as pheasant, partridges, wood pigeon and mallard. Our organic farms are producing plenty of brassicas, squash and root vegetables, ingredients that go so well in hearty dishes. It’s a great time to be a chef and have so much in the larder.
This November sees the continuation of our ever-popular Asian nights every Thursday at Kota Kai. Sunday roasts will include all the lovely seasonal produce, served as a long lunch beside the fire with our winter warmer wine list and cheese board. Be sure
to look out for our seasonal cocktail deal, wine nights and lunch specials that will be happening throughout the colder months. In addition, the first of our dine and dance nights kick off on the 30th November when the Kai Christmas menu starts, so do book early as it’s filling fast.
At Kota, we have had a complete change to our tasting menu to complement the colder weather and changing of the season. We are very much looking forward to using the Cornish larder in November and matching each course with a fantastic wine. We also have two special Sunday Roast Feasts taking place on November 3rd and December 1st. We had such a fabulous response from our first ever roast event and were thrilled with the feedback – we recommend early booking as they sell out super quick!

BRAISED SHORT-RIB BEEF COTTAGE PIE
This is a lovely version of a classic cottage pie. I love the texture of braising short ribs from their long, slow cook, with the meat falling off the bone. I have added a lot of ingredients from my Asian background – such as cinnamon sticks, clove and star anise – to give the ribs a rich, deep flavour.
SERVES 4
PREP TIME: 75 MINUTES
INGREDIENTS
For the Filling:
8 short ribs
Rapeseed oil
2 white onions, diced
4 carrots, diced
2 sticks celery, diced
1 leek, diced
8 cloves garlic, crushed
100ml Port
300ml red wine
3 star anise
1 cinnamon stick
5 whole cloves
50ml soy sauce
50ml Worcestershire sauce
5 sprigs thyme
2 bay leaves
4 litres chicken stock
Salt and pepper
For the Mash Topping:
1.5kg floury potatoes
6 tbsp unsalted butter
125ml hot milk
Salt and pepper
Grate of nutmeg
200gm Cheddar cheese, grated
It's a long process but thoroughly worth the effort. This is another great party dish, as you can make a huge batch the day before and then reheat it on a low heat while you entertain your guests. To make it look even more tasty, finish the pie under a hot grill to bubble and colour that cheese.
METHOD
1 Preheat the oven to 150°C. Season the ribs with salt and fry in a pan on a medium heat. There’s no need for any oil here, the beef fat will work perfectly. Cook for around 10 minutes turning them until they are caramelised all over. Remove from the heat and set aside.
2 In a casserole dish on a medium heat, fry off the onions and carrots in some rapeseed oil until caramelised. This should take about 20 minutes. Add the celery, leek and garlic and cook until soft. Turn the heat up and add the Port and wine. Burn off the alcohol and reduce by half, and then add all the rest of the ingredients to the pot, including the caramelised ribs. Wait for the pot to simmer and then put some parchment paper over the top to keep the ribs covered. Put the lid on the dish and place in the pre-heated oven for 2 hours and 45 minutes.
3 Check the ribs are cooked and pull out the bones. Leave to cool in the liquid. When cool enough to handle, take out the ribs and pull the meat until it's completely shredded, then set aside. Strain off the sauce, making sure to push on the veg to get all the liquid out. Return the sauce to the pan, and on a medium heat, reduce until it has thickened to a consistency you're happy with. Mix the meat back into the sauce and season. Spread out the mix in a pie dish.
4 To make the topping, cut the potatoes evenly and add to a boiling pot of salted water. Cook until tender, strain and mash them, or put through a ricer. Add the rest of the ingredients and beat with a wooden spoon until super smooth. Put into a piping bag and pipe on top of the meat. Sprinkle the cheese on top of the mash and grill until golden brown.

SORTED Christmas
With the festive season just on the horizon Rock Distillery have devised some tasty tipples to help you embrace the vibe.
And what better way to kick off the celebrations than with a glass of Rock Pink Mimosa? To create this elegant and exotic mix, simply add a generous splash of Rock Pink Grapefruit Vodka Liqueur (straight from the fridge) into either a cocktail glass or champagne flute and top it up with chilled Pierre Gobillard Rosé Champagne. Perfection!
If you want to venture further down the vodka route, Rock Distillery has recently introduced a fantastic Classic Vodka – amazing when kept in the freezer and served neat. In addition to their Pink Grapefruit Vodka Liqueur, Rock Distillery have produced two more Vodka Liqueurs: a stunning Watermelon Vodka Liqueur and a very indulgent Toffee Vodka Liqueur.
This complements their other exciting new additions. In the gin range they’ve created two sensational citrus liqueurs: Lemongino and Orangino. Their regular gin range, consisting of eleven amazing sugar-free gins made with natural, pure ingredients, remains in continuous demand.
To extend the Single Malt Pale Barley threeyear-old Whiskey range, they’ve concocted three very original liqueurs. Rock Peanut Whiskey Liqueur is a must-try for anyone who enjoys the flavour of peanuts. Rock
Whiskey Warmer, made with ginger and local honey, is the perfect comforting nightcap. And for something a little different, their Rock Whiskey Sour, featuring added fresh lemons and grapefruit, is a zesty delight. As with all of their blends, they are cut with Cornish Spring water.
The entire Rock Distillery collection is available online or in one of their five shops, located in Wadebridge, Padstow, Tintagel, Bude and their new out-of-county location in the historic market town of Corsham, Wiltshire.
So, if your drinks cabinet is looking a bit empty, now’s the time to start restocking in preparation for Christmas. And remember to keep it replenished by monitoring regular updates from Rock Distillery as they continue to bring you the finest spirits Cornwall has to offer. Cheers!

The festive TRANSFORMATION
A visit to Trevena Cross during the festive season is a firm tradition for many families across west Cornwall.
This December the garden centre has no intention of disappointing eagerly anticipating visitors. With grand plans to harness the Christmas spirit, the team will soon be busy creating wowfactor festive photo opportunities, to capture special moments and lasting memories.
Garden Centre Manager, Nick Hann, comments, “This year we’re excited to share our Christmas displays with everyone who comes through those gates. Whether they’re here to pick up a Christmas tree, grab some lunch, do a spot of shopping or soak up the festive atmosphere, it will be free for all. With no obligation to spend a penny – come and enjoy, take some photos and get into the Christmas spirit with us!”
Complementing the magical festive displays, walk-about characters, music and snow, there will be an undercover 30-food stall and craft market on the first three weekends of December, combining delicious produce and locally made traditional and contemporary gifts and crafts. There may even be a chance to say hello and grab a photo with Father Christmas! (Please note, there won’t be formal 1:1 grotto visits taking place with Father Christmas).
If you can’t wait until December though, beautiful lights and decorations will inspire
your festive senses following the seasonal transformation in the shop at Trevena Cross. Plus, an eclectic range of gifts are ready to kickstart your Christmas shopping. Outside, a huge selection of UK cut and pot-grown Christmas trees will descend on Trevena Cross mid-end November, including the popular value non-drop Nordman Fir (up to 6ft tall!), so every Christmas space and pocket is catered for.
The Palm Tree Bistro will be serving up its delicious winter menu, popular Sunday Roast and lighter bites from the outdoor, undercover Tiki Hut. Using fresh, local produce, (including some grown on-site in the nursery) it may even place some irresistible festive treats into its cake counter of homemade bakes!
With plenty of free parking, good disabled access across the site, and dogs with responsible owners also welcome, it’s an ideal outing for the whole family.

Expert Property Management in Cornwall
Providing Full Property Management Services
Based in Wadebridge, we look after over 100 properties in across Cornwall. Providing professional services including: cleaning, hire linen, 24hr on-call services, gardening, maintenance and building works to holiday homes and residential properties.
You can be assured that your property is in safe hands.
Step back IN TIME
Enjoy a stay in this beautiful and sympathetically refurbished historic building.
Towerhill is a 15th-century Grade II listed property in Bodmin, one of the town’s oldest homes, with a history dating back to the Domesday Book.
Owned by the same family since the 18th century, the house retains many original features and family memorabilia, offering guests a warm and inviting stay.
What was once the Manorial Courtroom is now an elegantly furnished drawing room with period and modern touches, large shuttered windows and a cosy wood burning stove. The ceiling showcases a Tudor Rose motif, while the back wall displays a map of Cornwall by William Mudge, (1762-1820), a founding figure of the Ordnance Survey in 1791.
A former dining area has been transformed into a second lounge, decorated with green ‘grasscloth’ wallpaper and portraits of clockmaker ancestors. It’s an ideal spot for pre-dinner drinks or afternoon tea, using bone china from the Queen Anne Spice cupboard.
The spacious kitchen is equipped with modern appliances, including a dishwasher and microwave, alongside a restored wooden farmhouse table perfect for group meals. A working Esse cooker keeps the house warm in the colder months and a nearby larder provides extra storage.
Upstairs, five individually decorated bedrooms offer unique features such as a Tudor barrel-vaulted ceiling, original oak beams and high, pitched ceilings. Two bedrooms have newly installed en-suites, while the main bathroom includes a free-standing bath, shower and double sinks.
Towerhill’s secure rear garden is a lovely space with outdoor furniture, perfect for enjoying the sunshine and views. Its location near St Petroc’s Church makes it ideal for family gatherings, particularly those attending services at the church. The property comfortably accommodates up to ten guests.
Located in central Cornwall, Bodmin is historically significant as the former county capital and provides easy access to both north and south coast beaches, as well as major tourist attractions. As one reviewer expounds, ‘…a house with so much character and original features, but also with all the mod cons to make our stay comfortable.’ Who could ask for more?

IN DENTISTRY
We profile one of the south west’s most prominent dental practitioners, recognised for her expertise in general, orthodontic and restorative dental care.
With a career marked by numerous accolades, including being named the Best Young Dentist in the south west and the UK in 2021, Dr. Alkisti Vousvouni continues to set high standards in patient care and dental innovation. Her approach is compassionate and meticulous, focusing on providing treatments that enhance the health along with the appearance of her patients’ smiles.
Having studied at prestigious institutions like Cardiff University and King’s College London, she has built an impressive foundation in oral surgery, orthodontics and facial aesthetics. Working at the Royal Cornwall Hospital Treliske, she gained invaluable experience in oral surgery and facial plastics. This background gives her a distinct edge in performing complex dental procedures and cosmetic enhancements that offer natural-looking results.
Her work at Revitalise Dental Centre, a stateof-the-art dental clinic located in St. Agnes, Cornwall, further elevates her profile. This ecofriendly clinic offers a truly unique experience for patients, combining the latest in dental technology within a five-star environment, designed to feel like home.
What sets her apart from many in her field is her gentle, empathetic approach to patient care. Known for her “soft touch,” she excels in treating nervous patients who may otherwise feel anxious about visiting the dentist. Many of her patients have commented on how comfortable and reassured they felt after their first appointment with her, even if they had been initially fearful of dental treatment.
One patient says, “Incredible... hands down the most thorough service I’ve ever received from any dental practitioner. Both a brilliantly professional and friendly experience.”
This kind of feedback is a testament to Dr. Vousvouni’s commitment to offering not just high-quality clinical care, but also a personalised and supportive environment where patients feel at ease.
Her efforts in patient care were recently recognised when she became a finalist for Best Patient Care in 2023. This nomination was driven by her work with nervous patients and the transformative before-and-after results of her treatments. Whether it's a routine check-up or a full smile makeover, her primary goal is to ensure that each patient leaves the clinic with a healthier, more confident smile.
Dr. Vousvouni's clinical expertise excels most in cosmetic dentistry and orthodontics. Her work in natural-looking smile makeovers is particularly noteworthy. Whether through direct bonding, crowns, veneers, or teeth whitening, she is dedicated to helping patients achieve their dream smile in a way that enhances their natural beauty.
One of her key areas of special interest is Invisalign® – a subtle yet effective solution for adult teeth straightening. With Invisalign®, patients can improve their dental alignment without the need for traditional metal braces, making it a popular choice among adults
seeking a more discreet option. Her skill in providing these treatments ensures that patients not only enjoy straighter teeth but also experience minimal discomfort throughout the process. Another satisfied patient comments, “Brilliant, very pleased with the Invisalign® process and would highly recommend!”
In addition to her work with Invisalign®, she is highly experienced in facial aesthetics, such as anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers. These non-surgical cosmetic treatments beautifully complement her dental work, offering patients a comprehensive approach to enhancing their facial aesthetics. By combining teeth straightening, cosmetic dentistry, and facial rejuvenation, she can provide a complete smile and facial transformation package tailored to each patient’s unique needs.
Situated in the heart of Cornwall, the Revitalise Dental Centre offers a cutting-edge approach to dental care. The clinic is housed in a beautifully designed, eco-friendly building that melds luxury with sustainability. The moment patients enter, they are greeted by surroundings that emulate the style and ambience of a fivestar hotel. The calming atmosphere is designed to put patients at ease, turning what is often a stressful experience into one that is relaxing and stress-free.
A deep commitment to continuous learning and innovation is at the core of her thinking. She is always looking for ways to improve her techniques and offer the latest treatments to her patients. So, for anyone looking for a dentist who combines cutting-edge technology with a personalised and compassionate approach, Dr. Alkisti Vousvouni is a top choice. Whether you’re seeking cosmetic enhancements, orthodontic treatment, or general dental care, she and her team are ready to help you achieve your best smile.

EMILY PENFOLD
Carriage of Souls (pencil drawing)
Emily Penfold is a British multidisciplinary artist, based between Surrey and Cornwall. Her exquisite original pencil drawings explore the fragility of life, seeking out the magic in the unexpected and highlighting the delicacy of what lies beneath the surface. Inspired by this powerful force of nature – the sea is something that can make you feel so fragile and alive all in one.
Ancient Europeans believed that the seahorse was the carrier of the souls of deceased sailors to the underworld. They were the providers of safety and protection during the soul’s passage through the spiritual vortex until they reached their fated destination. There is so much power and authority for such a beautiful, delicate creature.
Emily will be releasing a brand new, limited edition print series under the heading ‘Carriage of Souls’ at the end of October. www.emilypenfold.com | eompenfold@hotmail.com
Exhibiting an artist in the ascendency
With an international reputation amongst art and craft collectors for its painting, sculpture and quality studio ceramics, the New Craftsman is regarded as one of the most important spaces for contemporary artists in St Ives. Founded in the mid-1960s by potter Janet Leach, it holds a reputation as one of the country’s leading art and craft venues. The gallery’s annual programme of mixed and solo exhibitions supports the work of Cornwall’s and the UK’s very best painters and craftspeople.
The gallery continues its association with rising young painter Will Calver, with a new collection that continues his exploration of the still life tradition. Painted solely from life, Will’s figurative paintings aim to convey the ‘quietude and monumentality’ of everyday objects and pay homage to the medium and history of oil painting, while his recent move to working on panel has
allowed for his painterly language to come to the fore, without the intermediate texture of a woven canvas surface. Inspired by 17thcentury Dutch art, each work is created ‘alla-prima’ and developed in three layers of paint, allowing the artist to find balance and precision in the expression of his subjects. Will graduated with a BA Hons in Fine Art from Falmouth University in 2019 and now paints full-time at his studio in rural Kent. After graduating, Will held his very first solo exhibition at the New Craftsman Gallery. He has since exhibited at the London Academy of Representational Art, at Porthmeor Studios St Ives and at Mall Galleries London.

Suki’s uncompromising sea and land-scapes
This November, to celebrate the special beauty of north Cornwall in winter, Whitewater Contemporary brings you new paintings by Suki Wapshott. She lives and works in her studio above Polzeath, looking out across the Atlantic Ocean, painting emphatic, large-scale canvases throughout the seasons. Suki regularly walks the north Cornwall countryside and coast in all weathers, absorbing impressions of the landscape that inspire her paintings. Created through delicate veils of colour, followed by rich applications of paint in her finely tuned palette, works in this collection capture the surging waters and brooding weather systems of cold winter days, as well as those precious moments of winter sun that light up the sand at low tide. Taking in views of the Camel Estuary, Pentire and Polzeath, these paintings express Suki’s passion for the landscape around her home, a feeling she shares with her devoted collectors.

Turning the hands
OF TIME
As fourth element celebrates the launch of its first dive watch, the Pelagic, the conversation on sustainability is as pertinent now as it was at the company’s inception.
Fourth Element was set up in reaction to a lack of effective technical dive gear on the market. As is often the case with those at the forefront of innovation, technological limitations prevented them from fully integrating sustainable materials at the time, and it wasn’t until 2014 that the tide turned. Becoming aware that there were groups of divers around the world voluntarily clearing nylon fishing net from wrecks and reefs, in an effort to improve the safety of the area for both divers and marine life and that there was an organisation behind this, taking some of that netting, recycling it and turning it into usable yarn called Econyl® was a turning point.
The yarn being produced from this rescued ghost gear was of a high enough grade to use in fourth element’s swimwear collection and so its OceanPositive range was born from a truly circular story: waste net removed by divers to be recycled into yarn, to be worn by those very men and women who had brought it up from the wrecks and reefs.
“Since the swimwear, which really started it all,” comments Director Paul Strike, “our mission has become to think about how we can make each and every fourth element product with recycled or more sustainable materials.”
The new Pelagic dive watch is a case in point. Packaged using only recycled materials (recycled PET) and FSC certified paper and card, this watch aligns with the company’s OceanPositive mission to use recycled and recyclable materials wherever possible and to build products to last. Named after the vast reaches of the open ocean, the Pelagic combines exceptional craftsmanship with high-specification engineering and is water resistant to 500m.
Designed in the UK and hand-built in Switzerland the Pelagic ensures exacting timekeeping with an automatic mechanism, powered by a Swiss-made precision selfwinding movement. It’s a watch suitable for the most extreme environments on Planet Earth, and was designed for durability and longevity, reducing the need for frequent replacements and so helping to minimise waste. The Pelagic is a watch to be passed down as an heirloom piece, further extending its lifespan and so reducing consumption, an element of sustainability that is often overlooked.

COMMUNITYHeart of the
One of Cornwall’s oldest breweries will soon be putting on the county’s biggest charitable beer festival in its Victorian cellars.
St Austell Brewery’s annual Celtic Beer Festival sees thousands of beer lovers descend on the brewery for a day filled with fantastic beers and live music.
The festival does more than just bring people together through a shared love of beer; its primary purpose is to raise vital funds for the St Austell Brewery Charitable Trust. Last year, people’s pint-drinking efforts at the festival raised a huge £20,000, which supports charities and causes across the whole of the South West. Since its launch in 2003, the Charitable Trust has raised more than £1,000,000 to give back to its communities where it’s needed the most; In 2023, the Trust donated more than £80,793 to important causes in the region.
One example of fundraising within St Austell Brewery’s pubs is its fish and chips offer. For every portion ordered, 25p is donated to the Charitable Trust. In 2022, £16,743 was raised for Cornwall Air Ambulance.
This year, the Charitable Trust is donating money raised from its fish and chips to its Heart of the Community campaign, which is helping to fit defibrillators onto 55 of its pubs across the region, where the business has identified a need for one.
The Celtic Beer Festival will see a jam-packed line-up of musicians throughout the day, along with an impressive beer list showcasing more than 100 tipples from brewers across the UK. Alongside guest beers from other breweries such as Gypsy Hill, St Ives Brewery and Palmers, St Austell Brewery is putting on 27 of their beers brewed just for the beer festival.
A hibiscus-infused kettle sour, a blood orange Belgian Wheat beer, a passionfruit and tangerine Saison and a chilli stout are just a few of the inventive beers the brewing teams have created.
The festival will also feature 12 special guest beers from St Austell Brewery’s small batch programme, as well as a dedicated bar from Harbour Brewing Co.
Tickets for the Celtic Beer Festival, which will take place on November 30th, will be available on the day at the brewery.
