ENGINE HOUSE MEDIA

Holbrook, The Moors, Porthleven, Cornwall TR13 9JX www.enginehousemedia.co.uk www.levenmediagroup.co.uk

Ialways look forward to the time when my day’s work finishes in the daylight. With the clocks going forward, it’s been a real treat to enjoy longer evenings, and I’ve been spending them catching up with some jobs in the garden. My camellia’s have been flowering for a while now, so there’s plenty of dead-heading to be getting on with as well as giving the lawn some care now that we’ve got a spell of settled weather. I have the prettiest milkshake-pink azalea that is bursting with flowers at the moment and it’s been lovely to see new shoots appearing on the hydrangeas and fig tree.

This issue, we’ve been hearing about the Cornwall Garden Society (CGS) from page 13, a charity that exists to encourage and improve the science, art and practice of horticulture. In recognition of its efforts, CGS is affiliated with the Royal Horticultural Society and the Gardens Trust, and has been helping to shape Cornwall’s living landscape for nearly two centuries. Join Jamie Crocker as he digs deep into what the charity is all about.

If you’re a keen plants person yourself, then be sure to turn to page 21, as we find that spring is very definitely in the air at Trevena Cross. This sought-out garden centre boasts 32 acres bursting with life as well as a delightful bistro café. Talking of all things foodie, we’re looking forward to attending some of our favourite food festivals this May. The Falmouth Food Festival (page 7) promises to be a weekend not to miss, as does the Porthleven Food Festival (page 10). Hosted by chef Jude Kereama, this year promises to be more exciting than ever with an incredible chef line up. Jude has also implemented some exciting changes to his own flagship restaurant, Kota, more of which can be found from page 28. Reimaginings and renovations seem to be the order of the day across Cornwall. The Wellington in Boscastle (page 30) has undergone a transformative refurbishment by owners St Austell Brewery, while The Nare Hotel’s Quarterdeck Seafood Restaurant (page 33) is set to become Cornwall’s new seafood destination.

There’s just time to draw your attention to our art section as we focus on Lizard Art (page 37) and the work of some incredible jewellers at Porthleven Jewellery Workshop (page 39). And finally, be sure to turn to page 51, where we have some fantastic competitions, including a Red Hot Chilli Pirates rugby VIP weekend, worth a staggering £1,000. Make sure you enter at www.cornwall-living.co.uk/competitions for your chance to win!

For the first time, the festival extends into the Bank Holiday Monday, with late-night festivities running until 10pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Supported by Falmouth BID, this muchanticipated event has become a highlight of Cornwall’s culinary calendar, drawing food lovers from across the UK. This year, a partnership with Kamado Joe brings live fire cooking to the forefront, while St Ives Brewery provides the drinks. ELIXR Wine debuts a dedicated Wine Tasting Lounge, offering curated selections from expert sommeliers.

New for 2025 is the Chef’s Theatre – a culinary stage hosting some of the South West’s finest chefs. Expect live demonstrations, interactive talks and behind-the-scenes insights, all celebrating the best of local and international cuisine.

It wouldn’t be Falmouth Food Festival without its legendary traders, and this year’s line-up is no exception. From fresh seafood and flame-grilled burgers to handmade pizzas and artisan hot sauces, those cravings will be covered. The craft and producer tent offers a hoard of locally made goods, from jewellery to small-batch spirits.

With a full schedule of live music, Falmouth’s waterfront will be alive with sound, taste and celebration. Co-organiser Barney Farnworth sums it up: “Something special is cooking. Never before have you seen such good food and music on Falmouth’s waterfront.”

EPCs - The Next Challenge

Holiday homes and short-term rentals have traditionally been exempt from requiring an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC), provided they qualify as furnished holiday lets (FHLs) and that the owner, rather than the guest, covers utility bills. An EPC is a colour-coded chart that rates a property’s energy efficiency from A to G.

Although stricter EPC regulations were scrapped in 2023, a new government consultation is underway, proposing that all holiday homes meet a minimum EPC rating of C by 2030 as part of the recommendations from the independent Climate Change Committee (CCC). They have set a legally binding net-zero target of 100% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions to be met in twenty-five years. This aligns with a growing coalition of countries, cities, businesses, and other institutions that are pledging to get to net-zero emissions.

For property owners and investors, this raises concerns about the financial and practical implications of compliance. Retrofitting older buildings, such as traditional stone cottages, may prove particularly challenging. If a property is unable to meet the required

standard, questions arise about its future viability as a rental. Additionally, potential buyers may hesitate to invest in properties requiring costly upgrades, which could affect the supply of investment properties, including long term private rentals, impacting the housing situation further.

To prepare, owners may benefit from an assessment to determine their current EPC rating and explore cost-effective improvements, such as installing LED lighting or loft insulation, while awaiting further guidance from the consultation process.

For those seeking advice on buying or managing a holiday let, or wishing to discuss these developments further, professional guidance can help navigate the evolving landscape.

Aesthetic treatments for men have seen a significant rise in popularity, as more men recognise that looking good and feeling confident is not exclusive to women.

The rise in aesthetic treatments for men is not about erasing time but defining character. Botox smooths the furrowed brow, softens the weight of years, and leaves a face that speaks of energy rather than exhaustion. Dermal fillers, discreet in their effect, sharpen the jawline and restore lost volume, lending a quiet authority to a well-defined profile. These are not indulgences but investments, a considered approach to looking as assured as one feels. MEDfacials understands the nuances of the male face, offering treatments that enhance rather than alter. Looking your best isn’t just about aesthetics – it’s about feeling your best.

Contact MEDfacials today to discover how their treatments can help you achieve a refreshed and confident look.

Memorial jewellery with a difference

The ethos at Justin Duance has long been to make jewellery that means something to the wearer.

Through their method of sandcasting, you can personalise your piece by choosing the beach sand it’s cast in. For a unique memorial piece, the team can mix ashes with the sand.

Last year, they made a ring in memory of a beloved pet dog. The gold and gemstones were chosen to reflect his

colourings; and cast in a mixture of his ashes and sand collected from his pawprint on their very last walk across his favourite beach.

There are many ways you can commemorate a loved one, often it’s as simple as carrying a legacy of love through a wedding band made from grandparent’s rings.

Spring into action

Kestrel Specialist Handrail Systems understands that as spring emerges, so too does the desire to reclaim outdoor spaces. Their balustrades do more than delineate a boundary; they create a sense of place – a clean threshold between indoors and out. Using 316-grade stainless steel posts and handrails paired with toughened or laminated glass, these structures stand firm against Cornwall’s briny air and Atlantic squalls, offering durability without compromising on design. Spring and early summer bring a flurry of events: the Easter Eggspress fills carriages with the laughter of children on a hunt for seasonal delights, while the Murder Mystery trains invite passengers to scrutinise alibis and sip a welcome drink as a tale of intrigue unfolds.

On 20 June, the Lemonaires lead a sea shanty evening, voices rising in harmony as the train chugs toward Boscarne. May’s Steam Gala marks two centuries since the first passenger train, celebrating an era of engineering that still captivates today.

The immersive Cornish garden at last

For nearly two centuries, the Cornwall Garden Society has subtly shaped the county’s horticultural heritage, weaving its influence through grand estates and modest back gardens, sharing gardening knowledge, and promoting conservation while safeguarding and studying the natural environment, historic gardens, and designed landscapes of Cornwall. Founded in its earliest form in 1832, the Society’s original mission was to bring Cornwall’s botanical marvels to the public eye. On the 18th of May in that year, the inaugural meeting of the Royal Horticultural Society of Cornwall was held, supported by the patronage of King William IV, who was “graciously pleased to place the sum of £10.10s.0d (ten guineas) annually at its disposal.”

Transport was primitive then, the county’s vast gardens and estates known only to those who owned them. By exhibiting their finest fruits, flowers and vegetables, those early horticulturists revealed a hidden world, a tradition that endures in the Society’s annual Spring Flower Show. Held at the Royal Cornwall Showground, the event is often hailed as ‘the Chelsea of the South West’ –a showcase of Cornish creativity, climate awareness and cultivation, now enriched by a newly forged alliance.

In September 2024, the Society merged with the Cornwall Gardens Trust, intertwining two legacies to form a stronger force for horticultural conservation. The Trust, founded in 1988, had long been the quiet custodian of Cornwall’s historic gardens, researching their origins and championing their protection. With the formation of the Historic Gardens Committee within the Society, this work continues, ensuring that Cornwall’s designed landscapes, both past

The committee now acts as the local representative for The Gardens Trust, assessing the impact of planning applications on sites of historic interest. But it is not only about protection. There is celebration, too –an ongoing documentation of 85 recorded gardens lodged at Kresen Kernow, forming an ever-growing archive of Cornish horticultural history. It is a reminder that gardens, by nature, evolve. They are shaped by each generation’s hands, from the botanical adventurers of the 19th century to today’s landscape designers blending sustainability with beauty.

At the heart of the Society’s work is a desire to share knowledge. Membership unlatches the gate to lectures and visits to gardens that are not always open to the public. It is not only seasoned gardeners who benefit – those taking their first steps into horticulture are supported, too, through the Pat and Margaret Wells Bursary. Established by the Wells family in honour of their late mothers, both of whom shared an unrelenting passion for plants, the bursary helps students and apprentices with

the financial challenges of training. Whether funding study materials, specialist equipment or travel to world-class gardens, it is designed to help those hoping to make horticulture their livelihood.

This nurturing spirit extends to the Society’s flagship event. The 2025 Spring Flower Show, held in early April, unfurled a fresh perspective on gardening with its Show Gardens, designed under the theme ‘A Place to Heal.’ They are an exemplification to the next generation of horticulturists, with The Eden Project’s apprentices creating The Apothecary Garden and Cornwall College students designing Echoes of Tranquillity. These projects reflect the Society’s commitment to inspiring young talent and ensuring the future of Cornish gardens is in knowledgeable hands. Strengthening ties with The Eden Project, Cornwall College University Centre, and The Lost Gardens of Heligan, they are fostering a network where heritage meets innovation. A pedal-powered Sustainability Hub underscored the role of gardens in combatting environmental challenges, while a Grow Your Own allotment celebrated the revival of edible gardening. In response to a growing interest in regenerative agriculture, the show also hosted a series of talks by national names and local luminaries on soil

health, rewilding and the role of hedgerows in supporting native wildlife.

Sir Tim Smit, who famously restored The Lost Gardens of Heligan and co-founded The Eden Project, declared the show open, his words echoing a sentiment that has long been understood in Cornwall: a garden is more than a place of beauty, it is a space for renewal, a testament to patience and a living story shaped by the hands that tend it. Alongside this, a free lecture series, held between October and March, invites both members and non-members to be inspired, educated and engaged in the evolving world of horticulture (donations are welcomed). Recent speakers have included Jonathon Jones OBE of Tregothnan on tea-growing and Tremap, the ambitious plan to map every tree on earth; Alex Goodyear of Tremenheere on the botanical wonders of the Western Cape; and Stella Exley, who revealed the intricate world of nursery growing for the ‘chaos that is Chelsea’. Other highlights have ranged from Trewithen’s Millie Wykes on her global garden tour to The Land Gardeners’ Henrietta Courtauld and Bridget Elworthy on soil health and cut flowers, fresh from their SOIL exhibition at Somerset House, visited by His Majesty the King. Trustees Pen Polglase and Richard Stone have also explored change and research in Cornwall’s historic gardens.

The Society’s work does not end with preservation and education; it actively seeks to inspire. In an era of climate uncertainty and biodiversity loss, gardens are frontline spaces for change. The Society encourages the planting of pollinator-friendly species, the reduction of chemical inputs and the adoption of sustainable practices. With climate change altering Cornwall’s weather patterns, new challenges arise. Plants once considered tender thrive, while traditional species struggle. The Society is at the forefront of discussions about what this means for future planting schemes, advocating for adaptive horticulture, that honours the past while preparing for the future. It is a balancing act, but one the Society embraces with characteristic dedication. It is also deeply invested in the ethical considerations of gardening in a warming world. Should we continue to plant droughtsensitive species that once defined Cornish gardens? How do we manage the risk of invasive species that might flourish in milder winters? How do we acknowledge that gardening is not only about heritage but also about shaping a sustainable future?

For those drawn to this ever-changing narrative, the Cornwall Garden Society offers a place within its pages. Membership is an invitation to step beyond the garden gate, to learn, to preserve, and to play a part in the unfolding tale of Cornwall’s living landscape. To stand among ancient yew trees and newly planted orchards, to see the seasons shift in a world of colour and scent, and to know that, in a small way, one’s hands have helped shape the story of Cornish horticulture for generations to come.

Flourishing

AT TREVENA

A bounty of plants, stylish furniture and fresh flavours arrive for spring.

There’s a shift in the air at Trevena Cross. The earth is stirring, the days stretch longer, and the nursery –spread across 32 acres – brims with a tide of green. Every bed, every border, every shaded glasshouse is dense with life. Shrubs, perennials, hedging plants, and climbers stand ready, their roots steady and their leaves reaching. Coastal stalwarts, robust and saltkissed, sit alongside delicate bedding plants and patio favourites, all waiting for their short journey to the garden centre, where eager hands will take them home.

This is a season shaped by quiet toil. The nursery team, with soil under their nails and the scent of compost in the air, have spent the colder months preparing a harvest of colour and texture for Cornwall’s gardens. Now, with spring unfurling, the fruits of their labour spill forth in abundance, a celebration of growth and renewal.

Beyond the plants, Trevena Cross invites visitors to extend their outdoor spaces with an array of new furniture. Whether it’s the cool sophistication of contemporary loungers or the rustic charm of wooden dining sets, each piece is crafted for long days and easy evenings. Imagine sinking into a rattan sofa, a

book in hand, or gathering around a solid oak table as the barbecue smoulders into twilight. These are pieces built to endure – season after season, weathering Cornwall’s moods while remaining a place of comfort and welcome.

And then there’s the Palm Tree Bistro, where the Tiki Hut is shaking off its winter slumber. As the sun climbs, its outdoor seating becomes a retreat for those who want to savour a moment’s pause, perhaps with a plate of something freshly made, sourced from the surrounding land and sea. New dishes join old favourites on the menu, each one a taste of the season. Whether it’s a leisurely lunch or a simple coffee in the warmth of the afternoon, the bistro beckons –a place to linger, to breathe and to take in the quiet pulse of spring’s return.

READINESSSpring

Have your outdoor spaces ready for the coming season with a Resin Bound surface that will enhance your property’s appeal with both style and strength.

The threshold between a home and the world beyond its gates is more than a practical necessity; it is a statement, a first impression, a quiet nod to permanence. A well-appointed driveway, patio, or garden path speaks of an attention to detail that runs deeper than kerbside appeal. It is about durability, function and the quiet satisfaction of something built to last. For those considering an upgrade to their outdoor spaces, resin-bound surfacing offers a compelling alternative to tired paving stones and high-maintenance gravel.

Resin-bound surfacing combines carefully selected natural aggregates with a specialist resin to create a smooth yet textured finish. The result is a surface that is as robust as it is visually appealing, requiring little maintenance while standing up to the demands of shifting seasons. Unlike traditional concrete or tarmac,

which can crack under pressure or trap rainwater in unsightly puddles, resin-bound surfaces are permeable. Water passes through, reducing runoff and helping to prevent the pooling that plagues many outdoor spaces. For homeowners seeking both function and form, this material offers an elegant solution. With the arrival of spring, thoughts turn to gardens, patios and the quiet pleasure of outdoor living. A resin-bound surface provides a clean, structured base that enhances rather than competes with the natural surroundings. Colour blends range from warm ochres and muted greys to speckled granite tones, allowing for a finish that complements both modern and traditional settings. This level of choice ensures that each installation is unique, tailored to the individual preferences of the homeowner rather than dictated by the limitations of standard paving.

Practicality, of course, is key. A surface should not only look good on the day of installation but continue to do so for years to come. Resin-bound is inherently lowmaintenance, requiring little more than an occasional sweep to keep it free from debris. Weeds struggle to take hold, stains are easily lifted, and the surface resists UV damage, meaning that colours remain true despite prolonged exposure to sunlight. For those who value an outdoor space that is as effortless as it is enduring, resin-bound makes a persuasive case.

Beyond function, there is something satisfying about the uniformity of a well-laid surface. Gravel shifts underfoot, slabs develop uneven edges, and tarmac cracks over time. Resin-bound surfacing, by contrast, retains its integrity, offering a sense of order and refinement. A driveway no longer feels like a neglected afterthought but rather a considered element of the home’s overall design. Likewise, a garden pathway becomes a quiet feature, subtly guiding movement through the space without disrupting its natural rhythm.

The advantages extend beyond private homes. In public spaces, from parks to commercial properties, resin-bound surfaces offer a balance of durability and design.

Paths remain accessible and slip-resistant, even in wet weather, while the material’s permeability helps with sustainable drainage solutions. Businesses, too, benefit from the refined appearance, presenting a welcoming entrance that is as practical as it is professional. Resin-bound surfaces also lend themselves to creative applications, with designs incorporating decorative borders, geometric patterns, or contrasting colours to define different zones. Outdoor dining areas, courtyards, and even school playgrounds benefit from the blend of visual appeal and resilience. The material’s versatility makes it an ideal choice for those seeking a contemporary yet understated finish that harmonises with its environment.

Those considering a change would do well to think beyond immediate aesthetics and towards longevity. Spring is a season of renewal, a time to reimagine the spaces in which we live. Fusion, flux F AND CHANGE

Kota and Kota Kai have always been places of movement – where a fusion of flavours, of ideas, gently shift and evolve.

However, after 14 years, the confluence of these elements has brought about a large-scale reorganisation. A rebrand, a reimagining, a subtle but purposeful leap towards the future. Kota Kai now glows with a warmth drawn from deep embers: a wood-burning fire, an earthier palette, spaces drawn closer, more intimate. There is a snugness now, a layering of light and shadow that invites guests to linger and settle into something more enticing.

The physical changes are striking, but the real transformation can be found in the kitchen.

The arrival of the Josper grill has infused the menu with an unmistakable smokiness, a depth of flavour that hints at embers and seared edges. Tomatoes, peppers, onions – ingredients that once simmered now blister and subtly blacken, yielding sauces with a complexity drawn from fire. Meat and fish take on a primal,

charred sweetness, their natural flavours intensified and distilled. Dishes emerge gently scented, enhancing the connection between land and sea.

That instinct, that deep-seated understanding of food’s relationship to place, is at the heart of what sets Kota Kai apart. It courses through the veins of Chef Patron Jude Kereama, a reflection of both his upbringing and his environment. Half-Mãori, half-Chinese Malay, he grew up foraging, gathering and pulling sustenance from shorelines and forests. That childhood –of mussels prised from rocks, of seaweed drying in the sun – finds echoes on the plate, a melding of technique and tradition. A bowl of laksa, a whisper of soy in a slow-braised pork cheek, a herb dressing that carries the brightness of lime and the depth of coriander root. These are not just embellishments but inheritances drawn from memory and carried forward into something fresh and immediate.

In the dining room, the energy has changed. The refurbishment has brought a new fluidity, a shift in the way people gather and eat. The long dining room still stretches out towards the harbour, its views unchanged, but there are now smaller spaces and softened corners. A lounge room, intimate enough for private dining. A snug by the fire, its seats sought after on winter nights. The menu, too, has embraced this evolution – there is a rhythm to it, an interplay between larger dishes and small, shareable plates. The food encourages conversation, a passing of plates, a dipping of spoons into broths spiced with coconut and chilli.

Change is not confined to Kota Kai alone. Its sibling restaurant, Kota, has also stepped into a new chapter. A landmark 20th year has brought a refurbishment, a shift in focus, and an invitation to experience dining differently. The introduction of pintxos and snacks has lent a more relaxed air and a sense of playfulness.

The chefs are now delivering dishes, dissolving the boundary between kitchen and table. There is a new wine bar, placing a growing emphasis on pairings and discovery, which will be accompanied by a new wine shop in the Spring that will extend the experience beyond the walls of the restaurant.

And outside the two restaurants, the town itself has transformed. In 2004, when Jude first arrived, Porthleven was an unknown quantity to many. Now, it hums with life, a culinary destination in its own right. The annual Porthleven Food Festival, which Jude helped to bring about, has captured the national spotlight, a convergence of chefs, producers and food lovers. This year, Kota Kai will play its part with feast nights, DJs spinning late into the evening, the scent of fire and spice drifting into the harbour air. Kota, meanwhile, will turn its focus to Champagne, seafood and carefully composed pairings, a reflection of its evolving identity.

It is a rare thing for a restaurant to grow with such intention, to evolve without losing its identity. Kota Kai has done just that. The changes here are not a reinvention but an evolution both slow and sudden. The fire burns, the grill smokes, and the sea sends its offerings to the plate. And at the heart of it all, there remains that same, inescapable pull – the quiet, magnetic draw of good food, lovingly created.

Fit for ROYALTY

A major refurbishment of The Wellington in Boscastle is unveiled.

One of Cornwall’s oldest coaching inns, which has hosted a selection of famous historical figures including kings and poets, has undergone a transformative refurbishment by owners St Austell Brewery.

The Wellingon, a charming 16th century pub which sits at the heart of the quaint harbour village of Boscastle amongst towering clifftops, has just reopened. It features 14 refreshed rooms and three family-sized apartments, including turret rooms, all making the most of the pub’s unique, castle-esque features.

Each room draws inspiration from the pub’s woodland and coastal surroundings, blending charm with modern comforts. Ten of the rooms will be dog-friendly, making it the perfect base for walks along the South West Coast Path to the nearby town of Tintagel, famed for its association with King Arthur and the castle on the cliff.

A colour scheme of dusky greens, warm reds, and burnt yellows enhances the cosy feel of the rooms, bar and snug areas. A new addition to the pub is an outdoor seating area at the front of the building, perfect for alfresco dining and drinking.

In the Gifford Gallery on the first floor, a lighter, neutral palette has been paired with

floral feature wallpaper, reflecting the pub’s storied history. Original features, such as a large open fire in the main bar, stained-glass panelling and other period details, have been lovingly preserved, connecting the past with the present.

Past guests include King Edward VII and the famous novelist and poet Thomas Hardy, who gifted the pub intricate brass and ruby glass oil lamps. The historic lights, much loved by locals and visitors alike, will be shown off in all their glory in the customer areas of the pub.

The Spy Glass and Chart Room upstairs boast northerly views through tall windows that rise across the hill above the river Valency. The names of the rooms acknowledge the area’s maritime heritage, with their walls adorned with images of Arthur Wellesley – The Duke of Wellington –after whom the building is named.

The Spy Glass in the turret can be booked for private functions, while the Chart Room leads out to the new first-floor terrace.

Discover The Quarterdeck Seafood Restaurant at The Nare – Cornwall’s new seafood destination.

There’s something very exciting happening at The Nare this April.

Cornwall’s renowned five-star independent hotel is delighted to announce the reopening of The Quarterdeck Seafood Restaurant, reimagined as a premier seafood dining destination. With breathtaking views over Gerrans Bay, here you can feast on the finest locally sourced seafood in a sophisticated yet relaxed atmosphere.

Every detail has been carefully considered to create an exceptional dining experience, from menu development and the selection of exquisite crockery that mirrors the shimmering sea, to colour-matched linens –meticulous attention to detail is evident.

Led by Cornwall’s incredible ocean larder, the menu features St Mawes octopus, handdived scallop ceviche, Cornish Bluefin tuna raviolo, monkfish wellington, whole Dover sole, grilled local lobster, and a showstopping fruits de mer seafood platter. The dessert menu is equally impressive, highlighting the skill and creativity of The Quarterdeck’s chefs, who blend classic flavours with exciting twists – the Earl Grey crème brûlée is a must-try.

With sustainability in mind, The Quarterdeck incorporates hand-foraged ingredients such as seaweed, wild garlic and elderflower in its dishes and the restaurant proudly supports Wing of St Mawes, a multiaward-winning Cornish fishmonger. The

Quarterdeck has also partnered with the National Lobster Hatchery to contribute to their Buy One, Set One Free initiative. For every lobster purchased, The Quarterdeck donates £1 to help raise and release baby lobsters back into local waters and in doing so not only supports the local marine ecosystem, but ensures the continuation of this cherished delicacy for future generations.

Sat above the cliffs along the gentle curve of Gerrans Bay, The Quarterdeck offers a front-row seat to uninterrupted vistas, where golden sands stretch beneath the cliffs, with Nare Point standing proudly on the horizon. Thoughtfully designed interiors complement the blue waters beyond, creating an elegant yet welcoming setting for special occasions, intimate gatherings and memorable dining experiences. In summer, the outdoor deck invites guests to bask in the sunshine with a chilled glass of Chablis, while in winter, large panoramic windows ensure the stunning views can still be enjoyed in warmth and comfort. The Quarterdeck promises a unique seafood experience, no matter the season.

Bringing back

THE BUZZ

A Grade-II listed cluster of historic buildings has been reimaged for the modern era as a European-style food court, work and retail space.

Once a hub of prosperity, thanks to Cornwall’s mining industry, Redruth has navigated shifts in fortune, balancing nostalgia and reinvention. Thanks to Redruth Revival Community Interest Company (CIC), the town now has a new focal point – The Buttermarket – a £4-million project that’s breathing new life and a culinary destination into the town centre.

Once Cornwall’s largest market in 1791, it was demolished in 1795, prompting local landowner Sir Francis Basset to commission a new one in 1825. Known as the Buttermarket, it played a key role in the town’s identity but gradually fell into disuse as mining declined. Now, thanks to Redruth Revival CIC, this historic space is thriving once again. Judy Davidson MBE, former Mayor of Redruth and chair of Redruth Revival CIC, has championed the project for over a decade alongside fellow directors. “Seeing the Buttermarket bustling again is incredibly rewarding,” says Judy. “We hope it will remain a cornerstone of Redruth’s regeneration.”

Designed by Thread Architects, the restoration preserves historical features while integrating modern elements like a central glass atrium. The space offers markets, music events, feast nights and has a new cycle hub in the offing, blending understated design with

sympathetic renovation. The Buttermarket has a great buzz, particularly in the evening, and is becoming more popular week on week. It’s easy to see why – it’s a cool venue, with cool tunes and super-tasty food… yet with a price point that won’t break the bank. Everything feels effortless – parking is easy, the space has a welcoming feel to it, ordering is simple and the flavours are unforgettable. It’s is a paradise for food lovers. Resident kitchens include Bango Kitchen’s revered Asian street food, Cowgirls’ grass-fed beef, Caths Cornish Kitchen’s buttery pies, and Little Ears’ handmade pasta. Pop-ups like The Jar’s Indian street food and Harry’s Mercado tacos add to the diversity. The setup is simple yet brilliant: grab a drink, order from any kitchen, and wait for your buzzer to sound. With profits reinvested into future regeneration projects, Redruth’s revival is just beginning. This historic town is proving that the most exciting transformations often happen where past and future converge and The Buttermarket has become its beating heart.

Mary’s artistic journey began in London, where she studied exhibition design and earned a BA in Fine Art. Now working from her studio overlooking Argal Reservoir, she draws inspiration from the landscape that surrounds her. Deconstructing natural forms, she distils their structure into line and colour, layering different media to create depth and movement. Each piece evolves gradually, capturing the essence of place with a balance of harmony and energy. Her work can be seen at the Penwith Gallery, the Cowhouse Gallery, Lizard Art at the Trelowarren Gallery, as well as Open Studios and the Argal Art Trail (May 2nd–5th).

RECASTA tradition

ATransforming heirlooms, crafting new treasure and purveying new timepieces, all with precision and care.

timeworn ring, a faded necklace, or a bracelet rubbed smooth by years of wear – these are not just objects but vessels of memory, carrying the weight of past affections. At the Jewellery Workshop in Porthleven, such treasures are not merely repaired but transformed. With a craftsman’s precision and an understanding of sentiment, the workshop melts down heirloom gold to create contemporary pieces imbued with the stories of their past. Here, even the grains of sand gathered from a cherished shoreline can be pressed into metal, casting the landscape of personal history into jewellery.

Beyond bespoke creations, the workshop offers a trove of pre-owned pieces, each with its quiet narrative waiting to be carried forward. The shelves gleam with works from a growing selection of makers, including an elegant new range of titanium jewellery, anodised to vivid hues with electric currents, offering strength and style in equal measure – all made in the UK to a very high standard, hyperallergic and very durable. This is jewellery that refuses to fade, as enduring as the tides that carve the Cornish coast.

Precision extends beyond adornment to timekeeping, with the workshop standing

as Cornwall’s sole stockist of Zeppelin, Bauhaus, and Bauhaus Aviation watches. These German-made pieces, available in both quartz and mechanical movements, fuse engineering with artistry, catering to those who appreciate attention to detail in every tick and turn.

Yet, the workshop’s role in Porthleven is not solely that of a purveyor; it is a place of service, of swift and skilful repair. From stone-setting to Rhodium-plating, engraving to restringing, it operates with an efficiency that belies the intricacy of the craft. A fresh battery for a beloved watch, a resized ring for a changing hand – each small act of care builds a relationship between jeweller and customer, forging trust.

More than a place to purchase small objects of desire, this is where things of beauty are not simply bought but brought back to life, a space where the old finds renewal and the new carries forward the promise of longevity.

Confident smiles IN TRURO

The transformative power of dentistry in expert hands.

In the heart of Truro, tucked away in the quiet confines of Tinners Court, The Treatment Centre is helping to change what it means to smile with confidence.

A family-run practice with four decades of trusted care, it is a place where expertise meets warmth, and where the patient’s journey is as important as the final result.

At its helm is Anna, a highly skilled clinician whose MSc in restorative dentistry underscores her meticulous approach. Patients arrive looking for a change — to enhance their smile, ready to embrace a fresh start. Through Invisalign and cutting-edge restorative treatments, Anna and her team sculpt smiles that are not just straight and gleaming, but truly life-enhancing.

It is more than just dentistry. It is the art of renewal. Every interaction is shaped by care, by a commitment to trust, by an understanding that self-assurance often begins with something as simple as an unguarded smile. Patients describe the experience as revelatory, often expressing joy and newfound confidence in their transformed smiles. One recalls their first consultation, where treatment options were patiently explained, and their final visit, where subtle bonding touches made a longheld dream a reality.

“From the first appointment with Anna where we talked through options to the

final appointment where the finishing touches (bonding) made my smile the one I had always dreamed of, I felt relaxed, happy, and confident.”

Another speaks of the sheer joy of smiling without self-consciousness, of the confidence that lingers far beyond the treatment room: “I now smile all the time and love having my photo taken! I still get a thrill seeing a straight, lovely smile. I also feel a lot more confident talking to new people.”

This is what sets The Treatment Centre apart. It is not just about straightening teeth or perfecting alignment; it is about the restoration of confidence, the quiet transformation that allows someone to step forward without hesitation. For those who have spent too long holding back, there is reassurance in knowing that expertise and empathy go hand in hand here. In Truro’s centre, a discreet revolution in self-assurance is underway – one radiant smile at a time.

OF CORNISH LIFE

Housing a wide-ranging collection, Helston’s Museum of Cornish Life can be found in the town’s former market buildings.

This year the museum was thrilled to win the public vote for ‘Object of the Year’ at the Cornwall Heritage Awards for Henry Trengrouse’s Life Saving Equipment.

In 1807, Henry witnessed the wreck of the HMS Anson and the loss of over 100 lives at Loe Bar. He drew on his skills as a cabinet maker and designed ingenious equipment that would prevent future tragic loss of life so close to shore.

EXPERIENCE

In 1825 Henry wrote about his distress at witnessing drownings from shipwrecks, “These melancholy disasters continued to exercise my mind intensely day and night, and I was led to consider what means could have been applied to save those who had so miserably perished within hail of their countrymen and friends, and within a few yards of land and safety: and thus, by such continued reflection, I very undesignedly became possessed by the idea of devising means for the preservation of life in cases of general shipwreck: from which period I have made this great object the principal of my pursuits.”

His kit comprised a rocket, which would help form a line of communication between the ship and the shore; a ‘life spencer’, a cork buoyancy aid which has since been developed into the life jacket, and a ‘Bosun’s chair’, a seat you could sit in to be helped ashore using the communication line established by the rocket, which is an early form of the Breeches Buoy.

On his deathbed he said to his son “If you live to be as old as I am, you will find my rocket apparatus along our shores”, and he was correct that his designs became widely used and developed, saving numerous lives at sea.

The life-saving equipment by Henry Trengrouse is a most special part of the Museum collection and not just of Cornish heritage but of the world’s heritage. There is not a single corner of the globe that hasn’t benefitted from his inventions.

Over the summer look out for the Shipwreck of the Lizard exhibition.
“ Liberty is the equal right and heritage of every child of man, without distinction of race, colour or sex.”

This is the story of Emily Hobhouse; an inspirational woman from Cornwall who challenged the social norms of the Victorian era and changed the lives of thousands of women and children during the Anglo-Boer War. A tale of incredible bravery, determination, and impact, we shine the light on how a woman from a small Cornish village shaped events a world away.

Step inside the Victorian Rectory, Emily’s childhood home, restored by experts in painstaking detail, for a flavour of her life as a 15-year-old in 1875. Here, a window into the past is opened, to reveal the everyday life of the Hobhouse family.

In the War Rooms history blends with cutting-edge technology, to create a fascinating immersive experience. This unique, sensory journey shares the resolve and courage of Emily and the women and children before, during and after the Anglo-Boer War.

We warmly invite you to dine in our beautiful, light-filled Restaurant, offering a taste of history on every plate, which serves South African heritage dishes from the 19th century. This extraordinary experience inspires optimism and hope, sparking curiosity and conversation.

New Family Pass

We charge an admission fee that will be taken upon arrival in the Welcoming Area. This fee grants you access to all of the wonderful experiences that we offer across our property, including the War Rooms, the Rectory and the Restaurant. Family Passes are now available from £60 for a family of four.
