Beautiful buildings that don’t cost the Earth
ARCO2 Architecture is excited to announce that it has been shortlisted in this year’s prestigious Build It Awards for Best Selfbuild Architect or Designer, for the team’s design and build project Reflection. The project can be viewed online, with the winners announced at a Gala dinner held in London on Friday 22nd September.
Revolutionise your recycling with a new Ibex Sorta The new Ibex Sorta is the first ever ‘through the wall’ recycling chute system, taking your recycling from the inside to the outside in one simple action. The most common excuse for not recycling is the inconvenience and lack of storage, but with this brilliant new solution, you can kiss goodbye to ugly bins, bags and boxes. With its unique design you simply deposit your recycling through one, two or three air tight and insulated wall flaps on the inside which drop straight into your Local Authority bins, bags or boxes – all concealed in a stylish wooden housing. No need to sort it, store it or take it out! The first installation was successfully tried and tested on the prestigious Green Build Hub at the world-renowned Eden Project in Cornwall. Available in different finishes and combinations to suit most Local Authority schemes, prices start from as little as £199. For more information call Ibex Recycling on 01579 344102 or visit www.ibexrecycling.com
ARCO2 Architecture Ltd is an international, award-winning RIBA Architects’ practice with a unique, innovative, human approach to building design. Although

SIPS: The method
revolutionising modern construction Forget bricks and mortar, there’s a new way of construction that has been revolutionising the industry over the last decade or so: SIPS. But what is it? The structural insulated panel system offers several distinct advantages over traditional materials: speed, performance and cost. As Mike Burke of Sip Hus informs us, it’s much faster to put up, it out performs in efficiency and hence it’s much cheaper, both short and longer term. Costs are saved both on labour and materials, as well as on future energy bills. Also, as Mike points out, “due to its unique make up you can push the boundaries of traditional engineering and achieve open spans and stunning buildings far beyond the
reach of traditional methods.” It’s extremely versatile and perfect for barn conversions. Since Mike set up the business, it has grown exponentially, with Sip Hus recently becoming an official delivery partner for Kingspan, the market leader in SIP panel products. If you have a project on the horizon, speak to Mike now to see how he can help you create a home that you’ll cherish forever. For more information call 01209 215663 or visit www.sip-hus.com
Whatever you build... build efficient It was when searching for the right build system for his own house, that Dane Campbell, Managing Director of Stanchura, first came across insulating concrete formwork (ICF). Now, nearly 14 years’ later, Dane is one of the UK’s leading experts in ICF construction. “Aside from its energy and build efficiency, what I love about the ICF system we use is its robustness and versatility, enabling clients to get the most from their build space, both above and below ground,” says Dane. “From luxury cliffside developments, to basements
and bungalows, you name it, ICF can do it.” Stanchura provides a full ICF build service with CSSW accredited structural waterproofing, as well as a dedicated training and supply service to builders and selfbuilders. Dane will be hosting a seminar at 2pm on Sunday 8th October at this year’s Cornwall Home Improvement & Self Build Show and you can visit him on stand 73. or Kernow Springs, it all began when Cornwall-based, former boat builder and father of two Martin Dean built a pair of wood-fired hot tubs, after being inspired on a family holiday. Using different types of wood has always been second nature to Martin in his work, so word soon spread of his beautiful, backyard creations. Demand soared, to the point where he decided it was time to launch his own company. Now, Kernow Springs is one of the south-west’s leading suppliers of wood-fired hot tubs! Not just for personal enjoyment, when installed in your holiday properties, these wonderful additions can help add year-round appeal, even in the cold depths of winter. After all, nothing’s more tempting than a relaxing dip in the hot tub. But why choose one that’s wood-fired? For a start, being handcrafted from the finest timbers, they look stunning and can really complement the ambience of your garden. Indeed, these fabulous tubs caught the eye of popular actress and TV personality, Caroline Quentin, who simply couldn’t resist their rustic charm. “I love my Kernow Springs hot tub,” beams Caroline.
“It’s a joy to use and looks wonderful too. The Old Mill House, for instance loves her Kernow Springs hot tub – a wonderful Padstow bed and breakfast, decided a wood-fired hot tub would make the ç LEFT perfect addition. Indeed, after instalment, Award-winning the team watched its Valentines weekend tubs: Martin and his wife Nicola at the package sell out in record time! General National Festival Manager, Adam tells us: “I would highly Supply Awards in recommend a Kernow Springs Eco tub. Not London only is it a one-of-a-kind product, but Martin’s knowledge and dedication is exceptional.” So, if you’re looking to boost your revenue, year-round interest and eco-image, why not contact the Kernow Springs team? ABOVE ì Get your home feeling warm and cosy this Christmas with new shutters RIGHT è BELOW î Shutters add instant style to any home, whether modern or traditional
es, it may seem a little way off yet, but Christmas fast approaches every year, often catching us off-guard. It’s the time of year when we like to snuggle up in our homes, cosy and warm with friends and family in a comforting space that we can’t wait to return to. One way to really add the wow factor to your home is with the introduction of shutters, and now is the perfect time to do it before the winter sets in, and festive season arrives. There are many reasons for choosing shutters over traditional curtains. First and foremost, they are stylish, chic and timeless – equally at home in a traditional or contemporary setting. But it doesn’t end there, with other notable benefits including thermal and sound insulation, light and privacy control, ease of maintenance and additional security to your home. Shuttercraft Cornwall in Newquay, helmed by Paula and Alan Hibbens, combines the personal touch of an independently-run family business with the quality products and reputation of a national network. Here you’ll find a range of beautiful made-tomeasure shutters in styles and finishes to suit all tastes and types of building, from traditional barn conversions to sleek, beachside apartments. Even feature windows of all shapes and sizes can be accommodated. They really are that versatile! To get your shutters installed in time for Christmas, speak to the Shuttercraft team now to discuss options and see what would work best for your home. What’s more, if you’re attending the Cornwall Home Improvement & Self Build Show on 7th and 8th October at the Royal Cornwall Showground, why not pop over to meet the team? After all, what better way to create a proper festive window display that’ll be the envy of all who visit.

MODERN STANDARDS INDEED Heating your home during the winter while keeping energy bills down can be tricky. The team at OMNIE might just have the solution. DISCOVER MORE OMNIE is a part of Timoleon – a manufacturing and technology business that specialises in the built indoor environment, with products focussing on creating the best conditions for indoor living at the least long-term cost.
MEET THE TEAM Visit Omnie on stand 34 at the Cornwall Home Improvement & Self Build Show.
A
s we look to the sky, it’s pretty clear that summer is all but ready to give way to autumn, and we all know that with the changing of the seasons comes an inevitable drop in temperature. At this time of year, underfloor heating can be invaluable in keeping life cosy, but as the nights draw in and we begin to keep the heating on for longer periods of time, we’re soon faced with the startling reality that warming our homes via traditional means can be woefully expensive. This is where OMNIE comes in, with its Whole House System – designed to create the perfect indoor environment for your home while reducing running costs. Testament to the effectiveness of this system is Lampreys, a stunning property overlooking the beach in the West Country. After the original bungalow was demolished, a new build was constructed – designed by architect Michael Stopher – and it now consists of six en-suite bedrooms on the ground floor, with a large open-plan kitchen, dining and living area on the first, making the best of the astounding views. All the underfloor heating was supplied by OMNIE and, after a simple installation with
the OMNIE ClipPlate System providing an even distribution of low temperature heat, the property remains cosy, even in the depths of the winter! In order to extract stale air and circulate fresh air into the building, OMNIE Mechanical Ventilation and Heat Recovery has also been installed throughout the property, maintaining a high level of comfort as well as recovering energy that would otherwise be lost to the outside. The company also installed two 7KW air-source heat pumps, which together provide efficient, low temperature heat. All of this together helps keep energy bills to minimum, saving considerable amounts in the long term! So, if you’re keen to discover how you can best improve your home’s energy efficiency, while making life as comfortable as modern standards will allow, why not visit the OMNIE website and see what the team can do for you?
