First established in 1885, Rosemullion is a small animal practice with a veterinary hospital in Falmouth and branch surgeries in Helston and Penryn. We are passionate about small and companion animal care and our skilled teams of veterinary surgeons and nurses are dedicated to providing the highest quality care for your animals. We are open seven days a week and provide 24hour emergency care in Falmouth at our fully equipped Veterinary Hospital. There is a

dedicated night nurse on-site caring for our inpatients and emergency cases, as well as the on-call vet, who will both be alert and effective even at unsociable hours. By providing our own on-site inpatient and emergency service your pets benefit from continuity of care and are treated in a familiar place.

H E L S T O N

The Helston clinic is a large purpose built surgery and our branch in Penryn is a dedicated small animal surgery. Rosemullion provides a complete care service for your animals, anything from a routine consultation to a complex operation or more extensive diagnostic procedure. We treat all species of domestic animals including dogs, cats, rabbits and birds. With Advanced Practitioners in Small Animal Surgery and Exotics as well as certificate holders in Veterinary Ophthalmology and an incredible cardiology service provided by HeartVets Rosemullion has the expertise to give, not only our clients, but holidaymakers and referral clients alike, the gold standard veterinary care you expect for your furry (or feathery) friends.

THE scoop Ideas for you and your pooch, from hotel stays to dog-friendly outings.

Is your pet covered around the clock?

When it comes to our pets, it’s worth thinking about what might happen in an out-of-hours emergency, at night or during the weekend. It therefore makes sense to find a surgery that covers out-of-ours care, so you can rely on it at any time of the day – or night. Another aspect to consider is whether the surgery provides 24-hour nursing care, so sick pets aren’t left alone. With that in mind, make sure to check with your vet and find out how your pet will be cared for in an emergency. Kernow Vets is one example of a vet team in Cornwall who provide the assurance of round-the-clock care so, whether home or away, you know that they will be there for you and your pet. A30 Referrals in St Columb Major has announced the appointment Philip Witte, a veterinary surgeon with extensive experience in orthopaedics and neurosurgery. Philip hails from a dairy farm in Wiltshire and qualified as a veterinary surgeon in 2005. He has been working at a large referral centre in Hampshire for the last 11 years, gaining experience in a wide range of orthopaedic and neurosurgical cases. “I am very excited to be moving to Cornwall,” Phil tells us. “My new position at A30 Referrals will present me with cases which demand the breadth and depth of knowledge that my advanced training has given me.” Clinical Director, Philip Harris responds: “It’s exciting to be welcoming Philip to join our team. His reputation precedes him and we are confident he will use his expertise in orthopaedics and neurosurgery to help a massive number of small animals around Cornwall and Devon.” For more information call 01637 880307 or visit www.penmellynvets.co.uk

Not only are dogs welcome in the hotel rooms, they are also allowed in the hotel bar so they don’t have to be left at any point during your visit to Land’s End. To make matters even better, between 1st October and 31st March dogs can even stay for free if you quote ‘Cornwall Living’ when booking, which coincides with the time of year that they can have free reign over the beaches in the area too. Nothing is quite as iconic as a trip to Land’s End and having your dog there to enjoy Cornwall’s stunning surroundings with you makes it a truly special escape for the whole family. If they’re not, make sure to arrange a pet sitter or kennels, or perhaps choose an alternative dog-friendly attraction. This goes for beaches too – while many are dog friendly throughout the year, there are also many that have bans in place over the summer. Dog waste can be disposed of in any street litter bin in Cornwall and does not have to be specifically placed in a dog poo bin. If there isn’t one close by then take the bag home – there’s nothing worse than littering with both plastic and poo! In summer, as well as ensuring they have access to water throughout the day, it’s often best to walk your dog early in the morning or late in the evening when temperatures are cooler, reducing the risk of heatstroke. Cafés and canines

Popular with locals and visitors alike, the Harbour View Café is situated right next to the South West Coast Path in the heart of Porthleven. Offering freshly cooked all-day breakfasts as well as lunches, the whole menu is cooked from scratch, catering for vegans, gluten allergies and vegetarians, with plenty of delights to choose from, whatever the time of year. The lovely Cornish Museum of Life is housed in Helston’s historic market buildings. Spread over five display halls on three floors, it’s home to thousands of objects that promise to keep you fascinated and engaged for hours! The museum is free to enter and is completely family friendly, which means dogs are welcome too; there’s also a children’s play area, a gift shop and a delightful pop-up café. Head inside and you’ll find one of the largest Cornish social history collections, ranging from a five-ton cider press, to a 1950s kitchen. You can learn about Helston’s famous inventor, Henry Trengrouse, whose rocket lifesaving apparatus saved thousands of lives; and kids will love seeing what life was like in a Victorian classroom! You can also meet Henry the parrot, and see if you can spot the museum’s smallest object – made from a lion’s tooth! For more information call 01326 564027 or visit www.museumofcornishlife.co.uk

We did a little digging and found this review from one happy

customer and her whippet: “We’ve been there three days running, they make the best mug of tea! Today we had brunch, toastie and chips, full breakfast, all really nice. The staff are friendly and efficient, our whippet loves it there and goes straight to the dog biscuit jar. Can’t fault it!” For more information call 07948 613280 or visit harbourviewcafe

A dog walk in Cornwall was always my idea of an Idyllic treat right up unnl I had to pick up my dogs poop! Carrying that smelly awkward bag in my hand for ages was inconvenient and unpleasant. Of course leaving poop or bags of poop is unsociable, deadly to livestock and bad for the environment! That’s why I invented The Dicky Bag an amazingly convenient way to do the right thing, lightweight, odourproof, machine washable portable bin, made in Cornwall from Neoprene rubber. Easily aaached to anything including all dog leads, with the Karabiner, Velcro Strap or the Belt Loop. I am so proud that the UK Naaonal Parks have also decided to partner with my ny Cornish Company. xploring the white sand beaches, crystal clear waters and scenic walks on the Isles of Scilly is only made better with your four-legged friend in tow. Watching them scamper around investigating new smells and splashing through the calm waters after sticks gives even more enjoyment to a coastal stroll, with the added benefit of being able to rest easy knowing your canine companion is comfortable and happy with you, not missing you at home. Karma St. Martin’s makes this all possible. The luxurious hotel prides itself on being dog friendly and has won bronze for ‘Best Dog-Friendly Business’ at the Cornwall Tourism Awards in 2016, 2017 and 2018; the hotel team is aiming for at least silver this year! From the moment your furry friend arrives they’re welcomed with open arms – a treat, bowl, blanket and even a canine-friendly menu. The pet-loving Karma team also provides a dog sitting service, so you’re free to enjoy a spa treatment or make friends with the local seal colony on a snorkelling trip.

Enjoy a relaxing break with your four-legged friend at the beautiful Karma St. Martin’s. Unlike the main beaches on St Mary’s, the beaches on St Martin’s are dog friendly all year round and the hotel even provides complimentary towels for mucky pups to freshen up after a long day outdoors. Then for dinner head to the double AA Rosette restaurant for a delicious meal while your pooch has a snooze in your sumptuous room. If you’re dreaming of warm days, empty beaches and a bit of peace and quiet then make sure to visit Karma St. Martin’s either during October, when the days are still long and warm, and all the kids have gone back to school, leaving you free to explore Scilly’s ever-changing landscape with just the two of you. Or, in April, before the school holidays when spring is just beginning to unfurl and the Scilly’s beautiful flowers are waking up in full force. Activities with your dog during your stay at the Falmouth Hotel.

f you’re planning a trip to Cornwall, it’s nice to know that your dog needn’t ever go to the kennels again! Instead, they’re invited to sample the luxury and relaxed atmosphere of the Falmouth Hotel – staffed by a team that understands how dogs are very much part of the family. Here are three of the Falmouth Hotel’s top activities for you and your furry friend to make the most of this popular coastal destination.

Stay in a sea view room! The Falmouth Hotel has many dog-friendly rooms, including standard sea-view rooms. They’re also allowed on the hotel grounds on a lead, and charged at just £15 a night, it’s really a no-brainer to bring your waggy tailed friend along!

If you have a dog, the likelihood is that when you think ‘Cornwall’, you imagine long walks along the sand with your canine bounding to and fro to their heart’s content. One of Falmouth’s most popular beaches, Gyllyngvase is the perfect place to enjoy an early morning walk at the water’s edge – the perfect start to the day – or an early evening stroll, the perfect way to work up an appetite, or alternatively, to walk off that delicious seafood supper! It does have a seasonal dog ban in place between 15th May and 30th September, however the ban only applies between 10am and 6pm.

3

With Pendennis Castle viewable from the hotel, a trip to this iconic and historic site of interest is too tempting to resist. Built to guard the mouth of the river during the reign of Henry VIII, dogs are welcome on leads to explore Pendennis Castle, inside and out! OF THE BEST DOG-FRIENDLY EXPERIENCES AT HELIGAN CAMPSITE

1

DOG-FRIENDLY ACCOMMODATION On the south coast of Cornwall, perched above the glittering waters of Mevagissey, lies Heligan Caravan and Camping Park. Five of the park’s chalets are dog friendly, including Caerhays for the first time this year. Recently refurbished, Caerhays offers a deluxe bungalow option, sleeping up to six people in a spacious and tastefully decorated holiday home, so you can enjoy the beauty of the Heligan campsite from absolute comfort.

3

DOG-FRIENDLY BEACHES NEARBY There are some beautiful beaches on your doorstep, including Pentewan beach, which is within walking distance, and Porthpean, which is just a short drive away. However, these both have seasonal dog bans, so if you’re visiting during peak season then be sure to head to Hemmick beach, where dogs are allowed all year round.

4 2

DOG-FRIENDLY CAMPING OR TOURING Sleep under the stars with your canine companion. Dogs are welcome on the campsite no matter what form of accommodation you prefer, and whether you like to be in touch with nature in your tent or relax in your motorhome, Heligan knows that it’s even better when shared with your furry friends. Not to mention that in time for the 2020 season, a new amenity block is being built, complete with dog showers, so you can wash your pup after your coastal adventures.

DOG-FRIENDLY WALKS There are a whole host of walks to enjoy along the Roseland Heritage Coast thanks to the South West Coast Path, but one of our favourites has to be from Heligan to Mevagissey. Following the path of a pre-historic tin stream, the route passes through the Pentewan Valley and by a medieval settlement associated with the Lost Gardens of Heligan, before reaching the picturesque fishing village of Mevagissey.

5

DOG-FRIENDLY PUBS There are numerous dog-friendly pubs in Mevagissey, including the Harbour Tavern, The Fountain Inn, The Sharksfin and The Ship Inn. This means you can couple your explorations with a bite to eat in comfort, taking in the beautiful harbour views and relaxing a while, before heading back to the campsite. OLD INN MULLION

Set in the picturesque village of Mullion on the Lizard peninsula, this traditional thatched pub is steeped in history and finds itself at the heart of village life. Rooms are homely, warm and comfortable and the service downstairs – whether you’re eating or just quenching that sea-air thirst – is second to none. The best part is that dogs can enjoy all of this too, including a doggie menu, so if you’re planning on exploring mainland Britain’s most southerly point with your furry friend in tow, this is the perfect base from which to do so.

All dogs are welcome both inside and out in the large sheltered garden; the team simply asks that owners ensure furry friends are well behaved. than cure! BETTER

Eradicate ticks with Tickless – available on the harbourside in Padstow at Slickers Doghouse.

T

icks are small creatures that live mostly in countryside and parklands, feeding off the blood of passing animals. There are over 850 species of tick; you rarely feel a tick bite as their saliva contains an anaesthetic. Many dog owners will understand the associated health risks of ticks, the largest and most prevalent of which is Lyme Disease. Ticks get infected by biting infected animals, such as deer and mice. Once infected, a tick needs to be present on your dog’s skin for at least 36 hours to transmit Lyme Disease, but that’s not a huge window of time in which to treat them. Therefore, fast and total removal is imperative, if preventative measures have not already been employed. Many don’t realise how severe the symptoms of Lyme Disease can be. As well as a rash, fever, headaches and fatigue, this nasty condition can also cause joint pain and swelling, swollen lymph nodes and sleep disturbances, and if left untreated, it can lead to the paralysis of facial muscles, as well as affecting the heart and nervous system.

Treatment requires 10 to 14 days of antibiotics; if not caught early enough, it can require intravenous antibiotic treatment followed by up to 28 days of oral antibiotics. To put it simply, prevention is key! To help guard you and your furry friend against ticks, Slickers Doghouse, on the quayside in Padstow, is pleased to announce that it now stocks ‘Tickless’ – a device that emits a series of ultrasonic pulses that are imperceptible to humans, pets and wildlife, but that interfere with the ability of ticks and fleas to orient themselves. Environmentally friendly, Tickless contains no chemicals or fragrances, making it perfectly safe for everyone to use. Scientifically proven to stop the worsening of existing tick infestations, and to prevent it in dogs not already infested, if you’d like to guard your household against ticks and fleas, Tickless is your solution! To find out more, and to see everything else the dog-lovers at Slickers Doghouse have to offer, be sure to pop in next time you’re in Padstow! A HAPPY HOUND’S

With just a little planning, the whole family, including the dog, can enjoy a cottage break in Cornwall. Toad Hall Cottages offer their top planning tips.

D

og owners will know that one of the toughest decisions when booking a holiday is what to do with your four-legged family member. If you don’t want your dog to pine for you (and vice versa!), why not bring them along? Walking, beach time, exploring and relaxing family bonding are just a few things you can enjoy on a dog-friendly cottage break in Cornwall so, with more than 70 dog-friendly cottages in beautiful locations throughout Cornwall, Toad Hall Cottages have put together a few things to remember when planning a holiday with dogs. Plan your car journey with plenty of time for toilet breaks! Not only does this allow everyone to stretch their legs and remain comfortable, it will help avoid any ‘accidents’. After all, dogs are unable to tell you they need to stop and use the bathroom! Take familiar bedding, toys and treats. This will help your dog settle quickly into new surroundings, and a happy, relaxed dog will be a great companion to share your holiday with. Cornwall is renowned for beautiful scenery, so it’s well worth doing your research on walks near your accommodation before you go. After a long journey, a walk can make everybody feel much better! Along a similar vein, it also pays to check out any dog restrictions on nearby beaches.

There are many dog friendly days out, pubs and restaurants throughout Cornwall, including a number of beaches, but it’s worth checking first before you incur a fine. Check your accommodation’s house rules ahead of your arrival. This will help you understand where your dog is allowed to go, and be aware of any new risks. If you’re on the beach all day, remember lots of water and some shade for your dog. Encourage them into the sea as well – a great way to cool off! Also be sure to take poo bags with you wherever you go, so everybody can enjoy Cornwall’s beautiful scenery without accidentally stepping in something! OF THE BEST DOG-FRIENDLY WALKS

Everyone who has a dog will know that as soon as you reach for their lead a whole world of excitement is unleashed. So, if you want to give your pup the treat of a great walk in Cornwall this year, here are three of our favourites to give you some adventure inspiration.

1

LANHYDROCK’S RESPRYN RAMBLEH A circular walk around the Lanhydrock estate that takes in fantastic scenery along the river Fowey and through ancient woodland. Rich in history and wildlife, this is a brilliant walk that passes over Respryn bridge through a woodland of magnificent old oak trees and across grassy hills. It’s only a mile long and is classed as an easy stroll that will take you 30 minutes, perfect to give you and your pooch a quick dose of nature.

2

SHIPWRECKS AND SCENIC WALKS Starting from the National Trust Car Park at Winnianton Farm your first steps take in Winnianton Manor – one of the most important Dark Age settlements in Cornwall. From here you pass Dollar Cove – named after the wreck of a Spanish ship that was laden with silver dollars. You then continue across the fields at Halzephron Head beyond which you will see spectacular views across Mount’s Bay to

Loe Bar, Porthleven and further afield to St Micheals Mount. You’re then able to continue back to the car park. Another easy walk of 30 minutes that takes in beautiful stretches of Cornwall’s coastline.

3

LANTIVET BAY CIRCULAR WALK Providing an opportunity to spend some time on the beach as well as discovering a landscape with a rich fishing and smuggling heritage. This is a longer more difficult walk than the previous two, taking two hours and leading along steeper sections of the coast path. From the National Trust car park at Lantivet Bay, head to Lantivet beach and continue to Pencarrow Head. Follow the coast path until you reach a fork in the path then turn inland and join the path across the fields to the road which will lead you back to Lantic car park.

OF THE BEST

DOG-FRIENDLY BEACHES Three of our favourite dogfriendly Cornish beaches.

 Perranporth

T

hankfully for dog lovers, there is a plethora of dog-friendly beaches dotted around the Duchy. Meaning that your pups can race along the sand and splash into the surf throughout the year, because everyone knows that dogs love getting sandy paws. So, with that in mind, here are three of our personal favourites.

1

PERRANPORTH BEACH Located on the north coast, Perranporth has one of the longest stretches of golden sand that you’ll find anywhere in Cornwall, perfect for long strolls with your four-legged friend. It’s also possible to head up into the sand dunes and lead a circular route back to the car park. Not to mention that the Watering Hole bar on the beach is also dog friendly so you can enjoy a rest and refuel with your pup in tow.

 Porthkid ney

2

PORTHKIDNEY BEACH Situated just outside St Ives near Hayle rivermouth, you’ll find Porthkidney beach. Surrounded by other beautiful beaches such as Gwithian Sands and Carbis Bay, Porthkidney is the only one that’s dog friendly throughout the year so if you’re based near St Ives or Gwithian you know your pup can have just as much fun on the beach as you.

 Kennack

3

KENNACK SANDS Last but by no means least is Kennack Sands on the Lizard peninsula. This is a wild and rugged area of Cornwall renowned for its interesting geography and rich diversity of flora and fauna. It’s a beautiful beach to visit, however, bear in mind that only the part of the beach that’s furthest from the car park is dog friendly throughout the year. So, there you have it! Three of our favourite dogfriendly beaches in Cornwall, from the vast stretches of sandy beach on the north coast to the sheltered coves of the south. This is but a selection of the many other dog-friendly beaches in Cornwall so get out and get exploring! Also, the restrictions on the other beaches usually only last from 7am until 7pm (but be sure to check your local beach’s times first) so if you like morning strolls as the sun rises, or evening wanders as the sun descends, the world is your oyster!
