here’s a definite chill in the air, the nights are starting to draw in and Cornwall is coloured by its winter hues of russet and gold. This is our favourite time of year for getting out and exploring the Duchy with our canine companions. The summer crowds have gone and there’s nothing better than getting wrapped up warm and braving the elements on a good, long dog walk before returning to the warmth of a dog-friendly caf , restaurant or pub to enjoy some warming fayre. We spoke to utback Trading page to get some top tips on what to wear this season in order to stay warm and dry when out with your hound and paid a visit to The Salty Dog outique page where they stock a range of unique and luxurious items for doggies and their owners. We’ve also been investigating some great dog-friendly places to stay. From a traditional Cornish cottage to a sophisticated, four-star boutique hotel, Cornwall has plenty to choose from. Along with chief paw-ditor’ ev, we were lucky enough to catch the last rays of summer on a wonderful, sunny weekend away on the Isles of Scilly. Turn to page to read all about our adventures. I look forward to seeing you out walking soon,

A

s dog lovers themselves, the team at Court Farm Holidays appreciate that your pooch is one of the family, which is why they offer a choice of nine spacious and pet-friendly properties throughout the year, with no restrictions on breed, making this north Cornish gem a doggy and human heaven. There’s a property to suit all tastes and requirements. From a snug retreat for two, to farmhouses sleeping 12 or 17, you can choose between cosy and traditional or contemporary and modern. Plus, each property features a totally enclosed private garden and is fully equipped with everything you’ll need for your stay, with the majority of the homes also allowing you to luxuriate in your own spa hot tub. And, on colder nights, it’s hard to say whether you or your pooch will enjoy basking in front of the wood burners more. Located in quiet rural locations, the farms have acres of space to explore. Plus designated dogwalking fields are easily identified with Court Farm Holidays branded signage and there are a whole host of walks on the doorstep for you and your dog to enjoy. Make sure to take a morning stroll along the Bude Canal or explore steeper footpaths across nearby fields to Widemouth ay, where you’re rewarded with spectacular coastal views panning down to the Cornish hinterland and sweeping upwards past Bude to Lundy Island and beyond. Guests choosing to stay at Northcott rural retreats also enjoy direct access from the private farm lane to the stunning but challenging South West Coast Path and Northcott Mouth beach is just a 15 minute stroll away.

Cornwall is one of the most dog-friendly regions in the UK and consequently, four of the seven local beaches welcome dogs throughout the year. Then, off-season you can explore them all. There’s also a whole host of dog-friendly eateries from traditional village pubs to the barge restaurant moored on the Bude Canal. So, if you fancy a north coast escape, get in touch with the team at Court Farm Holidays who are happy to help you plan your perfect stay, with recommendations endorsed by Archie and Caspar – the resident paws of approval team.

Less work, less smell, more play with Siccaro

Every dog has its day Sometimes, our beloved fourlegged friends need a little help to point them in the right direction. Aggression, anti-social behaviour, barking, destruction, recall problems, jumping up – just some of the common issues that many dog owners face. Enter Bark Busters, drawing upon almost three decades of experience in helping dogs and their owners enjoy a happy, safe and stress-free life together. Ben Jordan, Cornwall’s dog training and behavioral therapist, can often be found walking the

countryside with his springer spaniel, Raffa. Simply give Ben a call to arrange a one-to-one session. With a very high success rate, doggie behavioral problems could be a thing of the past. If you’re thinking of getting a new puppy, a session with Ben is also a great way of starting the way you mean to go on, so you can get out and enjoy the great outdoors in confidence. For more information call 0808 1004071 or visit www.barkbusters. co.uk/dog-training-cornwall

There’s nothing better than sharing the great outdoors with your dog, however, returning to your car or home with a wet, dirty dog can be a hassle and in the colder months, it’s important to get them warm and dry quickly. Siccaro Supreme Pro dog drying robes solve these issues fast with the super-absorbent, antibacterial Wet Dry fabric, which holds over seven times its weight in water – it gets wet dogs dry in around fifteen minutes. ate umble, author and TV presenter uses the Siccaro robes on her own dogs and says: “They work amazingly well – and quickly. Both dogs are dry within about five to ten minutes of putting the dog drying coats on, and the car isn’t overwhelmed with the potent smell of wet dog.” For more information visit www.siccaro.co.uk or call 01885 400343

If you’d love to experience Cornwall’s great outdoors, outdoors, then Penbugle Farm has got you and your pooch covered! With its warm and comfortable Wigwams, glamping just became even more luxurious. Located in a small grass paddock behind the farmhouse, each sleeps four to five people and has electric lighting as well as a panel heater and standard UK plug sockets. Each is complete with added home comforts such as a kettle, toaster and a fridge plus an outdoor picnic table and decking. These are a great all year round alternative to a hotel or B&B, letting you get right up close to nature, with it being literally right on your doorstep.

Sandy paws welcome at Catch Catch Seafood Bar & Grill on Mawgan Porth Beach has really taken the area by storm, attracting A-listers this season including Richard and Judy, Kevin and the team from Grand Designs and even a very complimentary Gordon Ramsay! But what is it that makes it so popular? As well as its Sunday ‘best roast on the coast’, Catch has also been recognised for its green credentials. It’s recommended by The Final Straw for plastic elimination, by Padstow Lobster Hatchery for ‘buy-one-set-onefree’ and by the Cornwall Good Seafood Guide for bringing style to unfashionable fish by using sustainable stocks and making them tastier than ever. As the team says, “brill can be brilliant and cuttlefish can cut it!”

Catch is open for winter weekends, school holidays and all day, every day from Easter until November. Oh, and did we mention it’s dog friendly? For more information call 01637 860372 or visit www.catchmawganporth beach.co.uk

For more of a traditional camping experience with your pup, bell tents are also available as well as tent pitches. Each bell tent is pitched on wooden decking to keep off the ground in wet weather and to add a little more to that glamping experience. Like the Wigwams, the bell tents sleep up to five people and are provided with memory foam futons and cotton rugs to add extra comfort. They start at the museum and explore the folklore of the area, making them a truly unique way of discovering this beautiful part of north Cornwall. As you enter the museum, you are transported to a realm that seems more dream than reality, with women transforming into hares, Green en, Cornish piskies, mandrakes, crystal balls and dark mirrors; there’s something ancient about the museum, but also something discernibly modern, with its emphasis on the power of nature and its celebration of strong women. It’s a place to find out about real-life West Country witches and the magic they made to help their clients find love, predict the weather, cure sicknesses in humans and animals alike and enact justice – and sometimes vengeance – on those they felt had done them wrong. These muchmisunderstood and maligned practices have been shrouded in secrecy for centuries, but the useum of Witchcraft and agic’s founder went out and met with some real wise women’, speaking with them and learning their ways. is collection and the unusual stories of the people he met form the basis of most of the collection, which stands at over , objects! With help from outdoor experts Outback Trading in Helston, we have some top tips on how to make sure you stay safe, keep warm and dry and enjoy your dog-walking experience.

W

hether a short stroll or a more adventurous walk, the principles of dog walking are the same. Firstly, you should wear clothing suitable for the conditions. It may start as a nice day but you should be prepared for a rain shower or a drop in temperature, come the evening. In winter months, temperatures can plummet and that rain shower may quickly turn into a downpour. T-shirts are very versatile – worn on their own, they keep you cool in summer but when used for layering, warm in winter. Top brands suggest layering with a wide range of different clothing from t-shirts to eeces and coats. ook for base layers with good wicking properties and a coat that’s both water resistance and breathable. Outback Trading carefully choose and select products from worldclass manufacturers such as The North Face, Jack Wolfskin and they are also a main Paramo retailer. Outerwear includes lightweight, showerproof, 3-in-1, full waterproof and down jackets. Major brands have improved their sustainability and ecological footprint by eliminating nasty chemicals and many are now both recyclable and made from recycled material. When you’re out walking your dog, especially on Cornwall’s cliff paths, terrain can often be rough and uneven, making trainers unsuitable. Outback Trading

offers a wide range of walking shoes and boots suitable for short and extended dog walks. They can help you choose from bestselling UK and European brands, including Meindl, Aku, Merrell and Keen. If it’s really wet and muddy, then you may need to don wellingtons, gaiters and even a waterproof hat and overtrousers for those downpour days. And don’t forget your socks! A good pair will help cushion the impact and bring comfort to your feet. Once you’re all togged up then what about some accessories? Torches for night-time, a whistle or a small backpack to keep extra clothing and doggie-treats in can prove invaluable. Outback’s Whistleworld website offers probably the largest range of whistles, sent worldwide from Helston. Dogs can be trained to specialist dog whistles but also consider having a small survival whistle in case you slip and fall. A visit to Outback Trading will keep you warm, safe and dry ready for your next Cornish dog-walking adventure.

A warm welcome awaits you at The Cornish Arms, Pendoggett.

y t u a be

aving taken over the business just over a year ago, owners Geoff and Karen Dennison and their team of staff ensure a warm welcome awaits you at The Cornish Arms, Pendoggett, a traditional country pub dating back to the 16th Century. Situated near the north coast, between popular destinations Port Isaac and Tintagel, The Cornish Arms is ideally located to explore this rugged region of Cornwall, and the many attractions it has to offer. The Cornish Arms is just three miles away from the attractive fishing village of Port Isaac, an idyllic filming location thanks to it’s winding streets and whitewashed cottages and a beautiful place to explore on foot. To the north of the pub is oscastle, an area of coast that’s acclaimed for its outstanding beauty – a beauty that’s inspired generations of authors such as Thomas Hardy, whose footsteps you can trace along this picturesque part of Cornwall’s coastline. After a long day exploring the abundant attractions that Cornwall has to offer, what better way to relax than to sit down with a refreshing pint at The Cornish Arms? The beer garden has lush green grass and

n A spacious dining area awaits you

sturdy wooden benches from which you can admire the quirky form of the pub itself, which looks warped with age and with a host of stories to tell. Head into the pub on an evening, and enjoy the gentle ambiance of exposed beams and dark wood that creates a warm and comforting environment to enjoy your food. Karen tells us: “Our freshly prepared traditional pub food is made wherever possible with locally sourced ingredients and is served every lunchtime and evening.” For the gin lovers out there, the pub also boasts a wide selection of over 70 gins from Cornwall and beyond as well as its variety of Cornish beers, lagers and ciders. There’s something to suit every taste and you can top it all off with a comfortable night’s sleep in one of the seven en-suite rooms available – which may be necessary after an evening of gin tasting!

George at Cornish Traditional Cottages offers some food for thought for anybody looking to buy a holiday home in Cornwall.

I

f you love Cornwall and find yourself returning to the same area year after year, it may be a good idea to buy your own holiday property, if you’re able to. This way, you’ll save on accommodation costs and over time, you’ll acquire an asset that could be a valuable nest egg, or a retirement home in the future. If you’re buying for your own personal use, it’s important to buy with your heart, not your head. When you’re absolutely certain that the property is wholly or largely for personal use, you can be pulled by your heart strings when it comes to your dream Cornish home; fall for the features and characteristics that you love most and make the home your own when decorating and furnishing it. If, however, you’re buying it to let out during the holiday season, there are a number of factors to consider. Watching TV shows and reading other lifestyle magazines, you’ll no doubt already know that location is paramount – your holiday home needs to be in an area where guests want to holiday, and it needs to work well as a base for the activities they want to enjoy. So, put yourself in your guests’ shoes! Another thing to consider, especially here in Cornwall, is making your holiday home pet friendly. We at Cornwall Living can testify to the demand for dog-friendly holidays in the Duchy. George confirms this, explaining: “Pet owners are a good source of shoulder and low season bookings – when Cornwall’s beaches are more likely to be open to dogs. It’s also a bit of a no-brainer for rural properties or those close to the coastal path!”

For all there is to know about Cornish holiday home ownership, why not visit the Cornish Traditional Cottages website, or give George and the team a call?

LOVES SCILLY Discovering the enchanting archipelago of the Isles of Scilly with man’s best friend.

F

or those with busy lives trying to arrange a weekend away and find a date that suits family and work commitments can be a challenge. Luckily with a trip to Scilly this doesn’t include having to find someone to look after your dog, as Scilly is renowned for being dog friendly. And so it was that my wife and I and our trusty hound, ev, set off in the early part of this summer on an amazing Scilly adventure. Flying to the Scillies on the Skybus from ands nd is, in my view, the only way to travel to the islands. As you leave the mainland behind, with the ongships lighthouse in the distance, each passing second of the short minute ight sees your worries and stresses just slip away. n arrival we are collected from the airport by the Tresco Shuttle team who transfer us to St Mary’s quay and our boat transfer to ryher. There’s nothing quite like the sights, sounds and smell of the quayside to make you feel at

home’ on Scilly – salty air, azure blue skies re ected in clear waters and the bustle of boatmen helping visitors board the off-island launches. After a short trip across the water we arrive at our home for the weekend – the award-winning ell ay otel, a private oasis, set in an idyllic cove overlooking the Atlantic cean. We are shown to a lovely suite, with our own secluded patio on which to relax and soak up Scilly. nce unpacked, with tummies rumbling, we set of in search of lunch. We had heard that ryher-based Island Fish serves the freshest catch and ev loved the short walk from the hotel, and spent a happy time exploring lots of new smells amongst the ferns and the heather. ffering an eat in or takeaway menu, my choice of lobster, served with potato wedges and coleslaw lunch is a steal at only and both this and my wife’s crab quiche are to die for.

oth dishes are part of an extensive selection of fish and it’s award-winning to boot! A stroll around the island follows, much needed to work off our splendid lunch After a wonderful night’s sleep, induced by all that fresh air and the sound of the ocean, we breakfast in the hotel before heading out for a day on Tresco. oth the island of Tresco and its gardens are dog friendly to well-behaved pooches on leads. We have always wanted to visit the Tresco Abbey Garden and were intrigued as to what we would find. We weren’t disappointed – the garden is stunning, a sub-tropical gem, home to thousands of exotic plants from around the world. uilt in the th century around the ruins of a enedictine abbey, a meander around the garden reveals David Wynne’s magnificent Children’ sculpture that rises majestically behind a border of vibrant Agapanthus. The Abbey Garden just keeps on giving at every turn and the unique Valhalla museum, with its figureheads from Scillies’ shipwrecks, honours the final century of sailing tradition dating back some years, and is a fitting end to our garden tour. After our garden tour it’s lunchtime again! And what a lunch it is, declared to be: “one of the best ever” by my wife. ur vegetarian sharing platter and succulent pan-fried fish are enjoyed overlooking this exquisitely beautiful and peaceful bay. Dogs are only permitted on the terrace at uin each, but to be honest this is far the best place to sit anyway, overlooking the golden sand and the clear blue water

– in fact it looks so inviting that ev and I just have to have a dip! Walking off lunch takes us to the north end of Tresco and a visit to the ruins of ing Charles’s Castle before completing the six-mile walk that circumvents the entire island. After a happy day exploring we return to Hell ay otel sun kissed and happy. The weather has been amazing for our trip and has transformed Scilly into what could easily be mistaken for tropical islands. It’s warm enough for us to dine outside and we are blessed with a romantic sunset to accompany our delicious supper. As our weekend draws to a close, and we prepare for our return to the mainland in the morning, we both comment on how our visit has been one of sheer relaxation. The Scilly way of life has a different pace to the mainland – one that perhaps we all should adopt in order to take in the finer things in life and all that Cornwall and its unique islands have to offer. If you’ve never visited, book soon, you won’t regret it!

RIGHT TIME,

right place

Looking to buy a dog-friendly holiday home in Cornwall? We’ve found the ideal opportunity to purchase your own lodge in an idyllic woodland getaway.

J

ohn Fowler Holiday Parks’ St Ives Holiday Village is nestled amongst over 100 acres of woodland. Situated just outside St Ives, here you’ll find the peace and quiet of a rural park combined with the perfect location for discovering nearby St Ives and ayle, as well as further afield to west Penwith and beyond, with a whole host of dog-friendly beaches and attractions. John Fowler Holiday Parks is a family owned and run company and has been so for the last 65 years, with lettings at its heart. Since the beginning, John Fowler’s ethos has been to create holiday parks in stunning locations so that visitors have a lovely place to stay while using it as a base to explore the surrounding area. This ethos is none more apparent here and St Ives Holiday Village has been pinpointed to become ohn Fowler’s agship park, where there has already been considerable development over recent years. Currently, it’s undergoing a multi-million investment, which has seen the team remove a section of old chalets each year and replace them with brand new lodges. John Fowler Holidays’ Group Sales Manager, Mark Johnson tells us: “The St Ives park has been something

of a sleeping baby, but now it is to become the group’s agship park it will really come into its own. The new proposed facilities will be based around a mini village feel. All the buildings will be sympathetic to the woodland environment and will be constructed using wood, stone and glass with eco-friendly sedum roofs.” The work on the new facilities is planned to commence in the winter of 2019 and will include a new reception facility with supermarket, swimming pool with log umes, an entertainment complex, bowling alley, gym, spa and indoor sports complex and an adults only pub! With the last of the new lodges due to complete this winter, there has never been a better time to purchase a lodge on St Ives Holiday Village. A select number will be available to buy off-plan and will be competitively priced. Mark expands: “This is still a lovely park as it is at the moment, even without the new investment. The new lodges will be keenly priced and site fees will remain low while the development of the park is finished. As our site fees are fixed from when you buy apart from in ationary increases , those who buy now will benefit from the lower site fees secured on purchase.”

“Anyone purchasing with a view to sub-letting should know that this park lets particularly well, due to its fantastic location. If you own a lodge here you have the option to retain full usage, sub-let enough weeks to cover your site fees or sub-let the majority of weeks, which can go some way to recouping part of your investment.” This versatility means that your dream of owning a holiday home in Cornwall could be closer to reality than you think. The park attracts a mix of owners and visitors from families to couples. The entertainment facilities are all at the front of the site meaning that lodges further into the park are very secluded. The park is also dog friendly and with such a vast expanse of woodland, is perfect for walkies along the gentle paths! What’s more, there’s a wealth of dog-friendly beaches nearby, including Lambeth Walk, Bamaluz, Porthkidney, Black Cliff and Mexico Towans to name but a few . There is a regular bus service during the main season from the park that can take you into St Ives via Lelant or through Hayle and onto Penzance, where you and your hound can take a stroll along Long Rock beach or, at low tide, walk across the causeway to the iconic St Michael’s Mount.

one look at the back of your dog’s favourite dinner might leave you surprised at its contents. Countless unreadable additives and unexplained “meat derivatives” might make you wonder where is the real meat? With dogs being primarily carnivores do “meat additives” cut the mustard when it comes to feeding Fido? Opening the Natural Cornish Pet shop in May 2018, Jordan and Katy are passionate about showcasing the best in natural, wholesome dog and cat food for the discerning owner. Championing natural dry, wet and raw food for cutting down on owner’s vet bills and providing pets with a happy, healthy lifestyle. All products in the Natural Cornish Pet Shop are clearly labeled and

brands that are advocated both in the shop and on their new website, are more akin to your own family dinner. Natural Cornish Pet sits alongside the couple’s existing highly popular day care service, Doggy Day Care Cornwall, which since opening in 2014, has become the region’s most popular go to for day care and home boarding. The launch of the shop was part of the business’s expansion into the former golf course, Green Acres, in St Erth. The shop and day care are open seven days a week. Cornwall’s Home Of Natural Pet Food From plastic straws, to the air miles our strawberries have clocked on their way to England, as a nation we are rightly becoming more aware of what we consume; from where our food comes from, to what it contains. Does this now extend to man’s best friend?

Spotting the trend of the health conscious consumer, St Erth couple Jordan and Katy set about raising awareness of the additives and fillers in most mainstream dog foods. With many of the top high-street brands falling short of expectations,

A happy

hound's holiday Whatever the time of year, dogs and owners alike are bound to love a holiday at Millendreath Beach Resort.

T

he Beach Resort at Millendreath has recently come under new management, and the new team of dog lovers can’t wait to welcome you and your furry family members! The resort has plenty to explore, and more room than you can shake a stick at for your waggly-tailed friends to stretch their legs and run free, whether you’re on holiday or just visiting for the day. Millendreath Beach Resort is nestled in a 90 acre Cornish valley, with 60 acres of woodland walks to explore at the north end, and a beautiful private beach to the south. During the winter months, dogs are allowed on the beach, while during the busier summer period (1st May until 31st October), they can enjoy the beach before 9am, then again after 6pm. The site also rests on a beautiful stretch of the South West Coast Path – why not take a long stroll and enjoy the dizzying sea views, before retreating to the Beach Bar or the fantastic Bistro on the Beach that owners and dogs alike can relax in? Serving food from breakfast right the way through to dinner; even if you

just fancy a freshly brewed coffee, it’s the perfect spot to sate that sea-air appetite. The team also offers dog-friendly accommodation, with five dog friendly units benefitting from a stunning sea view, available all year round. These are available when booking direct at the resort, and come fully equipped with easy-to-clean leather sofas, a dog bed, dog towel and poop bags, so all the bases are covered! So if you’ve been hoping to escape to Cornwall but don’t want to leave your furry friend behind, why not set their tails wagging with a visit to Millendreath Beach Resort?

Dog owners who care pick up everywhere The Dogs (Fouling of Land) Act 1996 states you must pick up pretty much everywhere! But why? Not because it looks bad, smells horrendous or about stepping in it; it’s because picking up prevents toxic harm to our environment. But carrying flimsy bags of poop isn’t nice. Introducing, the Neoprene Dicky Bag, a portable airtight bin. You can’t smell it, can’t see it, freedom from that bag at last! Lightweight, odourproof, machine washable & made in Cornwall. Weighing approx 100 grams, easily carried on the lead with the karabiner clip and Velcro wrap. It’s everything you need on your lead.
