Breaking the mould It’s a quarter to four on a Tuesday afternoon and there’s an undercurrent of excitement as a group of girls gather outside an apparently unremarkable wooden shed at school. This is actually the headquarters of the Truro High School Greenpower Engineering Team – one that is at the forefront of work to redress the gender balance in the world of engineering.

At Truro High School, the girls learn the basics of computer programming with bumblebee shaped robots at the age of four. By seven, they’re building their own Greenpower Goblin race-cars and by ten, they’re racing them competitively on the track! Indeed, while the atmosphere may be warm and nurturing, the girls are driven, and nowhere else is this indomitable spirit more obvious than behind the doors of that wooden shed – soon to be replaced with a state-of-the-art engineering facility. Head of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths), Jon Dean, explains: “Our Greenpower Engineering Team is symbolic of what we do here at

Truro High. We set the girls running with an idea, we give them help and support and challenges along the way, and then we watch with pride as they learn from their mistakes and begin to get better and better.” It may not come as a surprise that Truro High is listed in the top 1% of schools nationally for value added at A Level. From humble beginnings this iconic Cornish brand has become a staple when it comes to coastal fashion. Don Chadwick and his family used to come to Cornwall in the 1970s on holiday, staying in a local bed and breakfast next to the St Ives School of Painting. One wet August day in 1981 the Chadwick family were shopping for waterproof jackets at a little shop in Adelaide Street, Penzance, and ended up buying the business from the owner, Mrs Strutt! el JeOFwTHE SOUTH WEST As we discover from the Savills team, Cornwall continues to be a popular destination for holidays and relocation.

here can be no doubt that Cornwall remains enduringly popular with holidaymakers, with a well-trodden path heading to the south west from the rest of the UK. The summer ‘season’ is ever lengthening and many Cornish business owners have noted that business is becoming much less seasonal, with isitors ocking here throughout the year. However, while Cornwall has long been thought of as the preserve of second homeowners, in recent years there has been an increase in the number of relocation purchasers.

The Savills Research team have been investigating recent market trends for prime property in the county and have noted that while the percentage rate of purchasers from within Cornwall has remained steady, rates of buyers from the rest of the UK have increased in the last two years. Indeed, the percentage of London buyers in the county has increased from 13% in 2015 to 32% in to date signiﬁcant number of these ‘out of county’ buyers are Cornish natives, returning home at an earlier age to bring up families or to take advantage of Cornwall’s

connectivity and set up new businesses. The well-known Cornish escapes of Rock, St Mawes and Padstow have all seen an increase in premium property values of over 40% (versus the county average), however as Ben Davies notes, “Cornwall is so much more than just the established destinations; lesser known towns and villages are seeing increasing popularity and interest. Cornwall is a county with something for everyone – the food, music, festival and arts scenes are second to none, along with world-class sailing and surﬁng in the waters around the county. People moving into Cornwall are able to enjoy living full time in what is a very popular holiday destination.” 2017 has been a mixed year, with the aftershocks of Brexit lurking at the start of the year, Article 50 in March and the snap Election

in June meaning that many buyers have been hesitant to make bold moves in the market. As we move into autumn, Head of Savills ornwall, onathan unliffe, remains conﬁdent in the Cornish market: “We have seen the traditional summer lull at the top end, but the middle has continued to perform strongly, with buyers competing in recent weeks on more than one property. t all began 35 years ago when Keith undertook his City and Guilds Apprenticeship as an electrician. In 2002 he set up as a sole trader, concentrating on the maintenance of household and commercial electrics. Since then, the business has gone from strength to strength. e all know that some design trends come along, peak and then disappear quicker than you can say Artex, but other trends develop and mature. Here is a quick look at some of those morphing trends that will take us into the new year.

Scandi into Nordic “We are very used to the cool greys, sheepskins and light wood of simple Scandinavian styling,” explains Liselle Milner of Cotton Mills. “The shift into what is being termed Nordic style sees the wood tones darkening to walnut and mango and deerskins introducing more warmth. Natural colours like deep greens are coming through in many of the new collections along with plaids and herringbone wools. Think chunky textures, natural materials and traditionally handcrafted accessories.”

Copper into brass These warm metallic tones have probably become popular because of the many years we have spent at the mercy of the dominant chrome phase. “Copper accessories have been very ‘in’ over the last few years but we are increasingly seeing the return of brass as the metal of choice. Brass is set off so beautifully against some of the dark, rich colours that are so on trend at the moment, it is easy to see the appeal.”

Wooden poles into painted poles There has been a great appetite for painted poles, which has which has seen many of the designer pole companies offering custom ‘any colour’ options. “What is new about the trend,” says Liselle, “is that we are now seeing ranges of painted poles in some lovely soft greys and Farrow & Ball inspired neutrals without the designer price tags, making this look much more accessible on a budget.”

Metallics into rustic metallics Rustic metallic is a term for a design that is created to look like aged metal, be it corroded mirror, oxidised copper or rusted chrome. “Although the metallic looking fabric and wallpaper trends ha e not been as in uential in Cornwall as they have in other parts of the country, the development into rustic metallics makes this trend a lot more usable in Cornwall’s country and coastal environment.” If you would like any help and advice on how to incorporate any of the coming seasons trends into your own project, the Cotton Mills team will be happy to hear from you.

t’s always nice to put a face to a name. In fact, it’s all the more important in these days of increasing computer automation, where the only conversation you get out of a trip to the supermarket is a polite prerecorded request to “please remove your item from the bagging area”. Ultimately, despite the convenience of online shopping, phone apps for every conceivable need, and self-check-out tills, it’s people that make all the difference in creating an experience, one that is tailored to you – nothing beats that personal touch that only humans can provide. So, as I arrive at Kernow Fires’ showroom in Wadebridge, it’s a relief to receive a friendly welcome from all the team, followed by a personalised guided tour of the impressive showroom he ﬁrst thing I notice is the warmth emanating from one of the stoves, accompanied by the nostalgic, heartwarming aroma of burning wood – not an overpowering, in-your-face sensation, just a light and gentle background note that adds to the ambiance of the room, along with the gentle chatter from the team and customers. As Kelly shows me around, I notice how the showroom has been cleverly designed to feel like you literally have stepped into someone’s

sitting room – you can see that the intention is not simply to display the stoves themselves in isolation, but present the bigger picture. It’s extremely effective. I’m introduced to Managing Director Simon, who explains the ethos. “You don’t just want a row of stoves – context is everything. So that’s why we put everything into perspective of how it could look when installed in a home.” The attention to detail in the high-end stoves is truly incredible – some include drop shadows to create hidden vents. Many are forged out of a single piece of metal to create a seamless ﬁnish, whether with sharp edges or smooth curves. Other neat touches include soft close features, options for plenty of aesthetic customisation, and stoves perfect to create a chic Scandinavian look. After a quick tour, I’m introduced to ce anager ae, the self confessed problemsol er ae not only pro ides technical support; she deals with anything that needs a decision, identifying problems and ﬁnding out the solution (if she doesn’t have the answer to hand). “It’s a bit like detective work,” she says. ae is affable and instantly warming just like the showroom she is responsible for. She has broad and wide-ranging product

e’ve long been fans of the amazing resin-bound drives from Oltco, which not only look fantastic but are incredibly low-maintenance too – a guaranteed way to become the envy of all your neighbours. What I didn’t know much about, however, until recently, was how this technology is being applied in some of the top kitchens, not just throughout Cornwall but worldwide. In fact, it turns out that in the professional catering industry, resin is the fastest growing industrial product on the market, a craze imported from the US, where it has already taken the nation by storm. The traditional system used on professional kitchen oors is inyl, which will easily split or warp, for example, if a knife or hot pan is

dropped – something that happens a lot in some kitchens! – which then allows water to get underneath the ooring and lift it up Equally, vinyl is much more susceptible to changes in temperature, causing cracking and stretching – again, not ideal in a kitchen environment. By its nature, it also has seams which – you’ve guessed it – are another potential source of weakness. esin ooring, on the contrary, is much more practical, easy to clean and hygienic, with a surface that helps to repel bacteria. What’s more it’s seamless and anti-slip, making it perfect for the commercial kitchen. Indeed, it’s so good that it caught the eye of acclaimed chef Paul Ainsworth, who has utilised it in the kitchen of his celebrated No 6 restaurant in Padstow.

National awards, a royal visit and an emphasis on fine fish and fun make 2017 a year to remember for Falmouth’s Harbour Lights. MAIN Everybody’s favourite double act: fish and chips!

t’s been another remarkable year for Falmouth’s famous and unique eaterie Harbour Lights – and not just because it is the UK’s reigning top ‘Independent Fish & Chip Restaurant’. That award, bestowed at the industry’s glitzy ‘Oscars’ in London in January, has enabled proud owners Pete and Sue Fraser to do more than just celebrate the quality of their food and service with locals and holidaymakers. They’ve also used their time in the spotlight to share their passion for this precious part of Cornish and British cuisine, and to highlight the industry causes and values of sustainability which make ﬁsh and chips so special to them and the 180,000 customers they feed each year. Their restaurant has even attracted royal approval – a visit by the Countess of Wessex in September was just the latest special event in a whirlwind year. Her Royal Highness enjoyed tasting a ariety of ornish ﬁsh and declared mackerel as her favourite. “The National Fish & Chip Awards judges commended our experienced fryers, friendly staff and very high standards,” says Pete. “But we were particularly delighted they recognised our commitment to innovating to keep things new and fresh for our customers.

Falmouth’s Harbour Lights gets the royal seal of approval from Sophie, Countess of Wessex

“That’s something we’re really carrying through this year. We want to spread the message that we are so proud to be part of this great British tradition and industry, say thank you to our wonderful town, and make sure our customers really enjoy the simple pleasure of a cracking plate of fish and chips, adds Pete, who with Sue took over the reins of the Harbour Lights with it’s enviable views over the harbour on Customs House Quay 17 years ago. The team kicked off the year’s fun by pegging their prices back to what they were in 2000 for one day in February. They sold more than , portions of fish and chips, meaning a piece of fish came out of the fryer every 15 seconds and they used 1.2 tonnes of potatoes for chips! Pete and Sue also launched special sustainability workshops held in the restaurant for local children in partnership with SciArt Solutions. Three primary schools have already visited to take part in fun activities highlighting the importance of making good fish purchasing choices ll arbour ights’ fish is responsibly sourced and has either Marine Stewardship ouncil certification or is recommended by Cornwall Wildlife Trust’s Cornwall Good Seafood Guide. All their chips are made from Cornish potatoes, largely from Colwyn Farm, Perranwell Station. And in May, Pete and Sue, who also own Fraser’s restaurant in Penzance, were back in London for another national award. The Fisherman’s Mission recognised their

outstanding work in raising £12,000 for the charity, which supports all workers – employed and retired – in what remains the most dangerous peacetime occupation in the UK. The cash they and their dedicated team raised added up to the biggest total from any outlet in the south west. It was raised largely through the restaurant’s participation in the Fish Friday fundraising event every June. This year’s event added another £2,000. Sue explains: “That cause is very close to our heart and we were particularly proud of our team who donated their tips on Fish Friday to bump up the total. We also love supporting lots of local events and festivals too.” The restaurant promises much more fun before the year is out, including starting the ﬁrst e er International ushy ea ay, a celebration of that essential side dish which will see Harbour Lights partnering with chippies in Canada and the USA among others to pay homage to the humble but delicious pea. “There’s never a dull moment here,” concludes Pete with smile. “We just feel so blessed to be in this business and in this beautiful place, and we want our customers to share our happiness.”

Cornish cider, food and music – we get into the festive spirit at the Little Orchard Cider and Music Festival.

Not even the prolific mud could dampen the revellers’ spirits

s we arrive at the festival, we can see that the prevailing rain has failed to dampen the mood of the revellers converging on Healey’s Cyder Farm. Indeed, even as a host of festival goers disembark from the temporary ‘park and ride’, they all seem in very high spirits. At the promise of an afternoon and e ening filled with the best of ornwall’s cider, as well as music from some brilliant UK artists, we tentatively make our way through the gates – my choice of footwear somewhat lacking in forethought. With food at the top of our agenda, we make a beeline for the Woodfired anteen Outside the tent, we pass a number of wood fires, each concealing a different delight smouldering beneath secretively closed lids. Chefs busy themselves, hurrying in and out of the tent as they prepare

for the next sitting. When we introduce ourselves, it becomes clear that one of them is Ben Quinn– founder of the canteen, along with his wife Samantha.

Woodfired anteen specialises in using local produce, particularly here in Cornwall, to provide unique and interactive dining experiences across Cornwall and the UK. While they often use meats local to where they travel, they usually stick to Cornish fruit and veg. Samantha explains: “It’s something we’ve got a lot of faith in, and our suppliers always provide us with the very best.” s we take our seats and await the first course, we find oursel es chatting with other attendees – people from all walks of life, from local and afar, yet all here to enjoy the same things – good food and cider! Finally, as Ben steps behind the counter and addresses the tent, he explains that this is entirely the point – getting to know new and interesting people o er the finest food and drink

Over the next hour or so, the courses come and go, each paired with a different cider and each as full of a our as the last The experience is really informative, with descriptions from Ben as we enjoy each course detailing how and why each has been put together. He’s warm, welcoming and knows how to entertain a crowd, even if he is contending with the BBC stage’s sound system! If I have to choose, my fa ourite is the woodﬁred chicken thigh paired with Rattler, but a lot has to be said for the mussels that are ser ed as the ﬁrst course. Cooked simply in cider with a few sprigs of rosemary – I have to say – they’re the best I’ve ever tasted!

Once we’ve polished off the last round of plates, we feel ourselves relaxing and easing into the festival vibe. It could be the warm hospitality, or the varied samples of cider we’ve been presented with. Personally, I think it’s a mix of the two, and after taking some shots of the Woodﬁred family and saying our farewells for the weekend, my partner J and I make our way, instinctively it would seem, to the bar. The bar – busy, as they tend to be at festivals, and slippery, thanks to the gallons of mud owing beneath our feet here’s a huge range of cider on offer, so much so that it would be dangerous to even think about trying them all, so I settle for one called Porth by St Ives Cider. J chooses a refreshing elder ower tipple, inspired by the third course back in the Canteen. And the night goes from there! We vigilantly stick to the same cider for the evening, for fear of what might happen in

the mud should we start to mix and match. We spend the dusky hours bouncing from stage to stage, enjoying the offerings of upcoming talent at the BBC Introducing stage, before dancing to the blurred lines between bluegrass, folk and country music from Cornish band Flats & Sharps. The evening ends on a set by Scouting for Girls – eagerly awaited by J – and by this point, we know that we’ve got everything we wanted out of this wonderful little festival. Indeed, even though we have the whole next day to enjoy; with mud-sodden shoes and what’s bound to be a sore head in the morning, we instead lift our ﬁnal drinks and toast “ o the same again next year!”

We meet Zeb Luke Gethen of Falmouth’s brand new salon Zebrafinch Hair.

hen we heard about a brand new designer hair salon opening up in Falmouth, we were obviously keen to discover more. So, we’ve tracked down owner and hair designer Zeb Luke Gethen, who tells us more about his story. Originally from Nottingham, Zeb moved to Cornwall from London last November and set up home in Falmouth. With over 15 years spent in the industry, it’s fair to say that Zeb knows his stuff when it comes to hair! Zeb has worked in Nottingham, Manchester and London in a range of high-end salons with some of the biggest hairdressers in the industry, including Nicky Clarke. Over the years, he has worked on fashion photo shoots, London Fashion Week, Cannes Film Festival, and for Fashion TV. Zeb specialises in wedding hair, having styled hundreds of weddings around the UK over his career. “This has always been a passion for me,” explains Zeb, “and I love to be there to help make people’s big day as perfect as it can be.” The new shop opened this September, after Zeb spent a couple of months renovating it with a little help from his parents, putting the

character back into the Georgian building. Zeb tells us: “I think your surroundings are very important and I take a lot of inspiration from everything around me, so I wanted to make sure it was exactly what I wanted it to be... nee injuries can occur during a range of sports such as skiing, tennis, squash, football and rugby. They can also be caused by more mundane activities like tripping over the cat, running after the kids, gardening or perhaps some over-enthusiastic DIY. One of the most common types of knee injury, which accounts for around 40% of all sporting injuries, is to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). The ACL is a tough band of tissue joining the thigh bone to the shin bone at the knee joint. It helps control the back and forward and rotational movement of the lower leg and runs diagonally through the inside of the knee, giving stability to the knee joint. Common causes of an ACL injury include landing badly from a jump, stopping abruptly, changing direction suddenly or a collision, such as a football or rugby tackle. If the ACL is torn, the knee can become unstable and tends to simply give way, either with sporting activities or sometimes with the activities of daily living. This can make it di cult to perform some mo ements like turning on the spot. It can also be painful. The good news is that it is possible to surgically reconstruct the ACL and this operation is available from expert surgeons at Duchy Hospital here in Cornwall.

Reconstructive ACL surgery Mr Andrew Lee is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Duchy Hospital. He tells us more: “A torn ACL can’t usually be repaired by stitching it back together. However, it can be reconstructed by grafting [attaching] new tissue onto it. “The ACL can be reconstructed by removing what remains of the torn ligament and replacing it with a tendon from, for example, the hamstring or patellar tendon. ACL reconstruction is a common procedure with a success rate for stabilising the knee of about 95%. Patients need to do a lot of physiotherapy/rehabilitation both before and after the procedure. “The operation takes about an hour and generally patients stay in overnight, although occasionally this can be done as a day case. Most people do not need a brace after surgery, and most are off crutches two to three weeks post-surgery. Return to sport after ACL reconstruction varies in its timing, but generally I recommend a year for contact sports or sports that involve a lot of twisting.”

t Ives has long been famous for its golden beaches, cobbled streets, artists and its quality of light, but until recently, perhaps not sea shanties. All that has changed since the formation of ‘Bamaluz Bootleggers’. Now the sound of songs such as the beautiful ‘Cadgwith Anthem’ or the more rousing ‘Spanish Ladies’ is regularly heard along the harbour front or in the local pubs. When the 2017 St Ives Shanty Shout takes place on 24th and 25th November there will be no escape from ‘sailors, pirates or smugglers’ all singing their own unique take on shanties. Travelling from as far as Yorkshire, over 20 groups encompassing a diverse range of sizes and styles will be participating, including The Oggy Men, Cadgwith Singers, Figurehead and Kimber’s Men. They hope to raise money for two very deserving charities, the RNLI and Children’s Hospice South West whilst at the same time providing two days of entertainment, hopefully with lots of audience participation! The event, hosted by Bamaluz Bootleggers, takes place in The Castle Inn, The Golden Lion, The Surf Shack and The Pilchard Press starting on Friday evening. 2016 saw Bamaluz Bootleggers host the ﬁrst t I es hanty hout when a small handful of groups came to sing at The Castle Inn. Due to the popularity of that event it was decided to do it again, but bigger!

Bamaluz Bootleggers was formed in 2015 by people passionate about restoring the tradition of pub singing in St Ives... and having fun. The name derives from the small beach near the harbour. The group can usually be found in The Castle Inn on a Thursday night after rehearsal or at any time when four or more are gathered together and all are welcome to come and sing along with them. For those of the group who were born and bred in St Ives there is an added poignancy in singing the songs of the sea, especially those written by the Cornish Bard, John Barber, who lived in St Ives. The song ‘Peter’s Choice’ evokes memories of the hard life the ﬁshermen had when boys as young as nine had to go to work to support their family. Happily, there are plenty of upbeat songs too, usually accompanied by ‘jolly, jolly grog’. So why not head down to St Ives in November and join in the fun? Entry is free and whether you like your singers dressed in civvies, as sailors or even pirates, there should be something just right for you. It promises to be great weekend!
