Breaking the mould It’s a quarter to four on a Tuesday afternoon and there’s an undercurrent of excitement as a group of girls gather outside an apparently unremarkable wooden shed at school. This is actually the headquarters of the Truro High School Greenpower Engineering Team – one that is at the forefront of work to redress the gender balance in the world of engineering.

At Truro High School, the girls learn the basics of computer programming with bumblebee shaped robots at the age of four. By seven, they’re building their own Greenpower Goblin race-cars and by ten, they’re racing them competitively on the track! Indeed, while the atmosphere may be warm and nurturing, the girls are driven, and nowhere else is this indomitable spirit more obvious than behind the doors of that wooden shed – soon to be replaced with a state-of-the-art engineering facility. Head of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths), Jon Dean, explains: “Our Greenpower Engineering Team is symbolic of what we do here at

Truro High. We set the girls running with an idea, we give them help and support and challenges along the way, and then we watch with pride as they learn from their mistakes and begin to get better and better.” It may not come as a surprise that Truro High is listed in the top 1% of schools nationally for value added at A Level. This year, 82% of A level passes were A* to B, and almost half of all GCSE passes A* or A! For more information call 01872 272830 or visit www.trurohigh.co.uk

Heal with the seasons Located in 65 acres of gardens and woodland by the Helford river, the Natural Health Spa at Budock Vean Hotel recently launched its new range of seasonal treatments, ensuring the wellbeing of mind, body and soul via ingredients and scents that give your body exactly what it craves at this time of year. Devised by new Spa Manager, Martina Crkonova, these great value treatments include the Gold Facial, Fall’s Gold & Fig Body Journey and the Cleansing Body Shot. These can be stand alone treatments or booked as part of a great value spa day. But it’s not just spa treatments that can be enjoyed here. Take time out of your day and enjoy a leisurely lunch, before exploring the grounds and drinking in the calm, riverside tranquillity that feels a world away from the noise of everyday life. Cornwall Hospice Care’s new window to the world “It’s our virtual reception desk,” says Cornwall Hospice Care volunteer Trustee David Renwick as the Cornish charity launches a brand new website. “We want to be accessible to everyone, whether they have a clinical question, want details of a fundraising e ent or to find their local Cornwall Hospice Care shop,” explains David who’s a member of the board that governs the charity. “We wanted to ensure our core messages about the care we provide in a number of settings, from our hospices to our new Neighbourhood Hubs in Wadebridge and Penzance, comes across clearly. We also want to introduce our

Writing your will – the risks of DIY When it comes to ensuring your family is taken care of, writing your own will can be tempting. Unfortunately, unless your wishes are simple and your financial and personal situations are uncomplicated, while you may save money up front compared with using a professional service, if you get anything wrong, you could be burdening your children, family and friends with increased costs after you’ve died.

So now you can go on a video tour of our hospices, meet our teams and learn about the many ways in which we support people in Cornwall with terminal illnesses. it being incorrect and, if mistakes are made, there won’t be any legal comeback at all. Get it badly wrong and it could mean your will is invalid, at which point the law will decide who your money and property should go to. Fortunately, Sampson Solicitors offers professional advice that’s tailored to your unique circumstances, meaning you needn’t run the risk. North Cornwall’s close-knit community For visitors to north Cornwall, sheep are just part of the scenery but for Cornish GranKnits they are invaluable suppliers of raw materials. This genuine cottage industry uses 100% Cornish wool from sheep on Cathy

Mayes’ family’s farm (a white Dorset ock but this year with darker wools from the Zwarble and grey-faced Dartmoors kept by the grandchildren). Cornish GranKnits offers a range of hand-knitted garments in colours that are inspired by, and are produced in, the varied landscape of the area close to the north coast. The range includes sweaters, cardigans, ponchos, hats scarves and snoods. Garments are available readymade or can be commissioned from Cathy – with the invaluable help of her grandchildren, of course!

Dreaming of a GREEN Christmas

As we gear up for Christmas, our diaries soon fill up with the promise of festivals and fayres, the sounds of carols and the smells of spices filling the air It’s the most wonderful time of year, when we fill up on rich goodies, pick up gifts for loved ones and join in the merriment. One of our favourite events is the Padstow Christmas Festival, returning bigger and better for the tenth year running, from 7th to 10th December. Expect foodie demonstrations from some of the country’s top chefs, the popular Christmas market, the Santa fun run and, of course, the fireworks on riday night If you’re looking for a cosy retreat from the bustling craft fair and cookery demonstrations, we’ve discovered the perfect haven in Greens of Padstow on North Quay. It’s open throughout the day and evening with a whole host of delicious festive treats to delight the taste buds as you catch up with friends or family. Warm up over a mug of hot chocolate or glass of mulled wine. What’s more it’s the perfect spot for watching the fireworks display reens has a ‘grandstand’ view of the whole proceedings on the terrace looking out upon the harbour wall. Whatever the weather is doing, make this your destination at the Padstow Christmas Festival.

ADD SOME SPICE TO YOUR LIFE Reeds Pharmacy in Truro is known to many as their local independent pharmacy. But you may not be aware of its specialism in selling spices: Divers Spices. For many years Reeds sold spices imported by London-based Geoff Logsdon. When Mr Logsdon retired, Reeds bought the business and gave it a new name, a phrase found in The Voyages and Travels of Marco Polo. Specialising in Spanish saffron and various types of vanilla, Reeds sells to individual customers while Divers Spices looks after trade sales. Stockholdings are kept lean to ensure freshness and a range of sizes is available.

“There were plenty of saffron and vanilla products in the market,” says Pharmacist Graham Brack, “but it seemed to us that some were very poor quality – and those weren’t always the cheapest. We believe that when people try ours, they appreciate the difference. As a successful pharmacy, we can spread overheads and keep the price reasonable.”

“The Cornish are big users of saffron,” Gillian Brack adds. “Where better for an importer to be?” For more information visit www.reedspharmacy.co.uk

Would you like to bring the confidence back to your smile? If you are feeling unhappy with the alignment of your teeth, then the team at Cathedral Dental Practice in Truro are on hand to help you achieve the smile that you’ve been dreaming of.

EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY Cornwall is the perfect place to own a dog, with beautiful scenery to explore at every turn. But sometimes, our beloved four-legged friends need a little help to point them in the right direction. This is where dog training with Bark Busters comes in. The company draws upon almost three decades of experience in helping dogs and their owners enjoy a happy, safe and stress-free life together. Ben Jordan is Cornwall’s dog training and behavioural therapist. A dog lover through and through himself, he’ll often be found walking the great Cornish countryside with his springer spaniel, Raffa. Aggression, anti-social behaviour, barking, destruction, recall problems, jumping up – these are just some of the common issues that many dog owners face daily. But this needn’t be the case. Simply give Ben a call

to arrange a one-to-one session. With a very impressive success rate, doggie behavioural problems could be a thing of the past. If you’re thinking of getting a new puppy, a session with Ben is also a great way of starting the way you mean to go on, so you can get out and enjoy the great outdoors in confidence For more information call 0808 1004071 or visit www.barkbusters.co.uk/ dog-training-cornwall

COUTURE

We explore the fashion revolution that is happening right here in Cornwall.

Y Hooded Toscana Coat with Fair Isle Funnel Neck Jumper

ou don’t have to peruse the trendy boutiques of Carnaby Street or follow the catwalks of Milan to experience the latest trends in fashion. Deep in the heart of the south west, there’s a silent revolution going on, with a string of top brands cropping up over the last generation that have well and truly put Cornwall on the map. For the clothing companies that have made Cornwall their home, the county has become ingrained

in their very fabric. Whether designed or manufactured here in Cornwall, their Autumn Winter 2017 collections are inspired by coastal and country living. Many have built an ethos and identity born from their waterside locations and Cornwall’s unique climate; whether that be its warm summers, wild and wet winters or cold water surf. All have produced collections that are ultimately wearable, durable and stylish.

| COVER FEATURE CELTIC & CO

It’s clear that Cornwall not only has its own climate but also its own wardrobe. Many of us are shedding the Monday to Friday suit in favour of clothes that are more relaxed and this is being re ected by many of the clothing brands in Cornwall, not least at Celtic & Co in Newquay. Steering away from the corporate, city feel is a key aim for the company that makes fabulous boots and clothing in the north coast surf town. The company was originally called UGG, which the owner Nick Whitworth sold to the Australian UGG boot company in a savvy move. Nick says that the footwear and clothes they make re ect the relaxed lifestyle. “It’s about making clothes that you can take the kids for a walk on the beach or Bodmin Moor in.” Their range is all about statement pieces that can be accessorised in different ways to be worn year after year. Their orginal, iconic, British-made boots and slippers, which are still handcrafted in the factory in ew uay from finest ritish sheepskin, have been joined by a range of knitwear, luxurious outerwear and soft home furnishings. The new season’s range, inspired by the Cornish landscape, has a colour palette of neutral, wearable tones and includes gorgeous, chunky and fine knit jumpers that will en elope you in extra fine baby merino wool. Team one of these with a pair of their stretch leather leggings and a to-die-for sheepskin coat and you ha e an outfit that’s both stylish and practical. Celtic fans include Pippa Middleton and Kate Humble and myself – my own boots, proudly bearing the original UGG label, are still going strong some 25 years on, testament to the quality of the sheepskin and the workmanship of Celtic and Co’s talented manufacturing team. BELOW One of the new prints for autumn

From humble beginnings this iconic Cornish brand has become a staple when it comes to coastal fashion. Don Chadwick and his family used to come to Cornwall in the 1970s on holiday, staying in a local bed and breakfast next to the St Ives School of Painting. One wet August day in 1981 the Chadwick family were shopping for waterproof jackets at a little shop in Adelaide Street, Penzance, and ended up buying the business from the owner, Mrs Strutt! I can remember as a child, long before outdoor clothes became trendy on the high street, that this was the go to shop for warm clothes and woolly socks. The company has come a long way from just selling waterproofs but the family is still very much a part of the everyday running of the business. Seasalt now creates beautiful and useful women’s clothing, footwear and accessories that re ect a life by the sea heir clothes speak of their landscape, people and heritage of Cornwall; it’s what makes them different. Seasalt’s design studio, led by Sophie Chadwick, overlooks Falmouth bay and St Anthony's lighthouse and their small design team delight us each season with an array of beautiful new prints inspired by Cornwall.

Each Seasalt print is unique: “Living in Cornwall, we’re inspired every day. The ora and fauna found all around ornwall provide a constant source of inspiration – you’ll often find pretty foliage, anemones, leaves and seed heads within our prints. With our design studio overlooking the bay, we also find oursel es constantly sketching the sailing boats, and the Falmouth Working Boats racing, with their distinctive, brightly coloured topsails, are a wonderful sight,” explains Sophie. The new collection is awash with bold print dresses for autumn, nautical Breton stripes and stylish waterproof coats. lways stylish and infinitely practical, easalt clothing has long since been a staple of my own wardrobe. FINISTERRE

Rooted in the coastal village of St Agnes, with o ces o erlooking the ocean, inisterre’s clothing range has a real focus on lifestyle, sustainability and a respect for environment. orn from a lo e of cold water surfing, the Finisterre brand has grown a huge reputation for the quality and style of its product as well being an ethical and sustainable brand that researches its fabrics and supply chains, only working with suppliers who share the same beliefs. Founder, Tom Kay is passionate about the beliefs that make the Finisterre brand so special. It all began in Tom’s bedroom in St Agnes developing product that suited the reality of cold water surfing nyone who surfs Cornwall all year round knows the commitment needed to brave the elements, waiting for conditions to change on windy, wet clifftops, and so Tom set about creating a range of wind and waterproof jackets, insulation layers and chunky knits. With retail outlets in both St Agnes and almouth, a store in ristol and a agship store in London, Finisterre has become an essential part of the wardrobe of lovers of the outdoors, style seekers and those who want their clothing to be both practical yet stylish. The autumn collection includes the softest knits in autumnal colours, a new and

improved Nimbus jacket made from recycled fabric alongside some great merino wool base layers. Finisterre also launched a collection in collaboration with the RNLI. Combining the company’s three commitments to product, environment and people the clothes are designed to take on the elements while supporting the work of the RNLI – of which Tom has been a part for 15 years. ABOVE The iconic Flying Dodo brand is back BELOW Fun clothes for bright young things î RIGHT Frugi’s nursing collection

FRUGI

They say that ‘mighty oaks from little acorns grow’ and this couldn’t be more true of Cornwall’s very successful organic children’s brand fter the birth of their first son Tom, Lucy and Kurt searched in vain for baby clothing that would fit o er om’s cloth nappies – somewhat bigger than the disposable kind! Trying to strike a work-life balance with a young baby, and being of an entrepreneurial nature, they decided to design their own range, so Cut4Cloth was born. Four years, another son, and a rebrand later, the range now included children’s clothing and a breastfeeding range – and so Frugi was born. Lucy and Kurt’s ethical standards have always been at the forefront and their children’s clothes are made from the softest organic cotton, sustainably farmed and free from harmful chemicals. They also donate 1% of their turnover to three environmental charities every year so you know that buying Frugi clothing for your children is not just benefiting your own child but helping others too. However, it’s not just the ethical production that puts the feel good factor into Frugi clothing. From babygrows and rompers to jeans and hoodies Frugi clothes are vibrant and fun, as well as being very durable. Quirky characters and brightly coloured patterns adorn gorgeous girls’ wear while the boys get bombproof jeans in the softest denim to team with cool hoodies, sporting bold graphics. Mums aren’t left out either, with a breastfeeding range that is practical yet stylish, a combination that’s often hard to find in the world of nursing clothing. WWW.WELOVEFRUGI.COM

A recently revived Cornish brand is back with some great casual wear perfect for relaxing on the beach or warming up post surf. Familyowned since 1992, daughter Leah has now re-launched the business that her parents started from a small-holding on Bodmin Moor. The funky brand became known across the county for its vibrantly dyed and printed sweats and snug eeces Leah is now bringing the Dodo back from extinction adding to their current collection and manufacturing more products locally. “The ethos behind the Cornish Flying Dodo brand is to create clothes for people to love, wear and keep – no throwaway fashion here! The new range includes hard-wearing, organic tees, beach-styled sweatshirts and hoodies in fresh colours with a fun range of kids’ tops that are perfect for both rest and play. Perhaps the most exciting news is that they will be bringing out a new line of women’s clothing that will be made to order, using sustainable fabrics, by Leah and a small team of talented seamstresses. The team always pair comfort with style when designing, while at the same time considering sustainability. Re-connecting with their customers from when they were in business before has been a real highlight: “We love the brand and so it’s great to hear people saying they love it too. The night the new website launched was overwhelming, with many more sales and hits than we had ever imagined!” enthuses Leah. WWW.FLYINGDODO.COM

EARTH KIND ORIGINALS

The lure of the Cornish lifestyle proved too much for EKO founder, Helen Davies, who left a successful London career as a fashion designer for the sound of the surf. Originally from St Just, Helen wanted to create clothes that re ected her passion and interests as well as promoting wellbeing and natural living. Helen is a keen surfer and loves to do yoga. As a result the EKO collection includes clothes you can throw on after surfing or a workout, and they are all made from organic material. For commuters, Helen also ensures that the clothes are great for travelling in. If you have an active lifestyle and love a capsule wardrobe that takes the effort out of looking good then the 2017 EKO collection is ideal. Cosy, everyday styles combine with effortless organic basics and winter essentials. A personal favourite is their weekend style bundle a combination of perfect fit leggings with a cotton dress that drapes beautifully. EKO clothing is a reminder that style doesn’t need to be complicated. They also have a uniform range, produced here in Cornwall, with clients including the The Scarlet Spa and Naturally Learning, all companies pushing the boundaries to natural wellbeing. The collection is available to buy in ULA shops in St Ives, Hayle and Truro. WWW.EARTHKINDORIGINALS.CO.UK

el JeOFwTHE SOUTH WEST As we discover from the Savills team, Cornwall continues to be a popular destination for holidays and relocation.

T

here can be no doubt that Cornwall remains enduringly popular with holidaymakers, with a well-trodden path heading to the south west from the rest of the UK. The summer ‘season’ is ever lengthening and many Cornish business owners have noted that business is becoming much less seasonal, with isitors ocking here throughout the year. However, while Cornwall has long been thought of as the preserve of second homeowners, in recent years there has been an increase in the number of relocation purchasers.

The Savills Research team have been investigating recent market trends for prime property in the county and have noted that while the percentage rate of purchasers from within Cornwall has remained steady, rates of buyers from the rest of the UK have increased in the last two years. Indeed, the percentage of London buyers in the county has increased from 13% in 2015 to 32% in to date significant number of these ‘out of county’ buyers are Cornish natives, returning home at an earlier age to bring up families or to take advantage of Cornwall’s

connectivity and set up new businesses. The well-known Cornish escapes of Rock, St Mawes and Padstow have all seen an increase in premium property values of over 40% (versus the county average), however as Ben Davies notes, “Cornwall is so much more than just the established destinations; lesser known towns and villages are seeing increasing popularity and interest. Cornwall is a county with something for everyone – the food, music, festival and arts scenes are second to none, along with world-class sailing and surfing in the waters around the county. People moving into Cornwall are able to enjoy living full time in what is a very popular holiday destination.” 2017 has been a mixed year, with the aftershocks of Brexit lurking at the start of the year, Article 50 in March and the snap Election

in June meaning that many buyers have been hesitant to make bold moves in the market. As we move into autumn, Head of Savills ornwall, onathan unliffe, remains confident in the Cornish market: “We have seen the traditional summer lull at the top end, but the middle has continued to perform strongly, with buyers competing in recent weeks on more than one property. Traditionally, autumn is the busier period for larger houses and we have some world-class properties launching to the market in the coming weeks.” If you are thinking of investing in property in Cornwall, why not speak to the Savills team now.

““They look so real and everybody mentions the confidence they have given me... I’m free again.” LYNN

LIFE CHANGING DENTISTRY Stop worrying about your teeth and get on with your life

These days nobody needs to be troubled by their teeth. If you don’t feel confident smiling, if you have trouble chewing your food, or if you’d simply like to look “better”, then advanced dentistry treatments such as dental implants can change your life. Dental implants offer a permanent solution to missing or failing teeth. They can boost self-confidence and help people to smile again.

DENTURE STABILISATION

The highly trained team at Pure Dental Health in Truro has over 35 years combined dental implant experience and have placed over 6,500 dental implants to date. They are also capable of complex bone and gum grafting procedures that other clinics do not offer. Having attended hundreds of courses both in the UK and abroad, patients can receive the latest advancements in Implantology. You can be safe in the knowledge that your treatment is delivered by highly qualified professionals in a relaxing caring environment.

SINGLE OR MULTIPLE MISSING TEETH

FIXED TEETH IN A DAY A revolutionary approach which has radically changed the replacement of lost teeth. In suitable patients we can replace a conventional removable denture, remove failing teeth if required, place new implants and fix a full restoration all in one day. Avoiding the need to live with a temporary denture in between having your existing teeth extracted and the new dental implants placed. You will only require one surgical process instead of multiple ones. The shortened time means that the whole process is more cost effective than alternative methods.

Loose dentures can cause frustration and embarrassment in social situations and make it impossible to eat certain types of food, with detrimental effects to digestion and overall health. Usually with loose dentures people resort to using lots of denture adhesive, which can leave an unpleasant taste in the mouth as well as being cumbersome to clean. Dental implants can help to stabilise your dentures allowing you to eat what you like.

When you have lost a tooth, the equilibrium in your mouth is upset. If it’s a large tooth at the back of your mouth, you will start having to eat on the other side, which puts more pressure on those teeth. Over time this could cause them to break and be lost. If it’s a front tooth, this could have a massive effect on your self-confidence. Dental implants provide comfort, stability and are the closest thing to natural teeth. HOW COULD PURE DENTAL HEALTH HELP YOU? We offer free treatment adviser appointments where a highly qualified member of our team will make recommendations after listening to your personal situation. We also have regular offers on assessments. Why not contact us today on 01872 222404 to see how we can help take away your worry.

ancy your very own escape to the country? With this charming rural property you could enjoy exactly that – and who wouldn’t want to live in the delightfully named Orchard Cottage? This stunning home, beautifully presented throughout, combines the best of modern family living with country cottage charm. Set in its own superbly maintained grounds, there’s a wonderful sense of space both inside and out, making it perfect for large or growing families that need a bit of breathing room. The living space downstairs has achieved a great balance of both a bright, openplan kitchen and dining area for bringing everyone together, and a separate sitting room and reception room (which could double as an additional bedroom). Upstairs has three large double bedrooms, the master with a large dressing room, meaning that whether homing a family or providing accommodation for guests, there is space for everyone to relax in comfort. This is the ideal house for entertaining – in particular, the large garden to the side of the house is the ideal spot for summer barbeques or relaxing with a glass of wine at the end of the day. With the old market town of St Columb just a couple of miles away, and Padstow, Wadebridge and the beautiful beaches of the north coast all within an easy drive, Orchard Cottage really is well situated to capitalise on all that north Cornwall has to offer on its doorstep.

Why settle for an ordinary kitchen?

Interior design tips Camellia & Co’s

Elaine Skinner shares how to ‘zone’ open-plan kitchen-diners Why settle for the ordinary when you can have something that’s truly beautiful and lovingly pored over by skilled craftspeople? We simply fell in love with the gorgeous, eclectic designs at Arnold’s Kitchens and had to share our finds with you his local family business creates high-end bespoke kitchens with individuality. We particularly love this gorgeous polished concrete island, which has been cast solely in one piece. It’s perfect for adding a touch of industrial chic and

equally at home in a contemporary kitchen or a more traditional setting, where the concrete is offset by natural wood. Add some handcrafted copper taps and utilitarian lighting, and you’ll have a kitchen that’s the envy of all your friends. ompany irector rnold an den older tells us: “We are passionate about what we do and thrive on providing clients with their dream kitchen.” For more information visit www.arnoldskitchens.co.uk

“Paint is relatively easy to apply, most of us can give it a go ere we used laked ime ark from ittle Greene to zone the kitchen area and create a cosy, cocooning mood. Wallpaper is a fantastic way to add subtle texture, colour and a touch of glamour. Here we used Jane Churchill Astral in Midnight to give the dining area a rich, sophisticated look.” Introduce bespoke cushions on a corner sofa to add a luxurious, boutique touch, as well as a practical place for the family or dinner guests to relax. “We used Harlequin’s Leonida Perla fabric to add some luxe texture. If curtains are not practical then opt for Roman blinds. Here we used two different but toning fabrics by Zoffany: Moonsilk (left) and Atmosfera (right).”

The big appeal of open-plan kitchen dining rooms is for the cook to remain part of the action when preparing family meals or entertaining. Faced with a big blank canvas they can be tricky spaces to make work though. “The trick is to create zones for different activities,” explains Elaine.

warmer WINTER

Get your house ready for winter with the perfect heating solution from Eden Hearth & Home.

W

ith winter fast approaching, your thoughts have likely turned to making your home nice and cosy for the coming season. With so many heating solutions to choose from, it’s important to get it right the first time and a focal point in your li ing area is a great place to start. There are plenty of different products to choose from, but when all this information is placed in front of your eyes like a kaleidoscope, it can be confusing trying to figure out the best option for you The team at Eden Hearth & Home recommends starting with a few basics. If your home is well insulated, you may only need a focal point in the room to make it feel cosy. In this case, electric heating is fantastic and now that most electric fires ha e high energy ratings, it’s not as costly as you might think. It’s also a wonderful solution for homes that don’t have a gas supply. At Eden Hearth & Home, there’s a wide range of electric fires on display, so there’s no need for you to feel limited or compromised when it comes to style or design. Perhaps you prefer the cosy feel of a gas fire If so, there are plenty of options, with Liquid Propane Gas (LPG) models available for homes without a natural gas supply here are e en gas fires suitable for homes without a chimney! The beauty of a li ing ame gas fire is that it’s an instant heat

Quality as standard

We catch up with Alison Dawe to learn more about ten years in the trade for Dawes and Windows.

ì ABOVE The Dawes and Windows team will ensure you get the perfect finish for your home

awes and Windows is an independent, family-run Cornish business that delivers way beyond its size, helping to improve people’s homes across the south west, with a focus on only using the highest quality products. As well as beautiful bespoke windows and doors, its service extends to fascias, guttering, roo ine, conser atories and porches o, with the company recently celebrating the milestone of 10 years in business, owner Alison Dawe tells us the key to success. “My husband Phil and I decided that we could provide a really honest, consumer-based service,” explains Alison. “We wanted to be different; to offer the best quality products on the market without gimmicks, spending the money where it matters on superior materials to create the best possible outcome.” Alison and Phil pride themselves on delivering extremely well designed and professionally installed products, an approach which is justified by the sheer amount of recommends they receive. “A job will never be rushed,” continues Alison. “Regardless of how big or small, every installation is completed to the same standard. While we’ve grown to also employ two of our children, Alick and Georgia, keeping the business small and family-run means that we can continue to offer our high standards. Word gets around and we’ve found that often

customers would rather wait for us to become available than go elsewhere, which is a great compliment! We’re very fortunate to have lovely clients, who understand how we work.” As Alison tells us, Phil is an absolute perfectionist when it comes to installation. “He wants to be able to walk away from every customer’s house knowing that he is totally happy with the end result, providing a product that looks as great as it performs. Value for money and a personal service is key; each job is made to measure and individual to the client’s needs.” As an added reassurance of its commitment to the highest quality, Dawes and Windows offers a full ten-year guarantee on all full installation retail jobs with an insurance backed guarantee, which also covers the initial deposit o whether upgrading your home with energy e cient rated double gla ing, or giving it a face lift with a beautiful new front door, make awes and Windows your first port of call.

We meet husband and wife team, Keith and Amanda Rees-Murray, the pair behind fantastic local company, Krp Electrical Ltd.

ì ABOVE For the team at Krp Electrical it’s the little details that really make all the difference to the final finish

I

t all began 35 years ago when Keith undertook his City and Guilds Apprenticeship as an electrician. In 2002 he set up as a sole trader, concentrating on the maintenance of household and commercial electrics. Since then, the business has gone from strength to strength. Having lived in Cornwall since the age of four, Keith and Amanda (who moved here in 1988) have plenty of experience working within the wide range of buildings, old and new, that Cornwall is famous for. “Simply put, we’re problemsolvers,” says Keith. “ I like to think that we can take an electrical problem off our clients’ shoulders and resolve it with a solution whilst they get on with their day-to-day life. “We like to plan with the end result in mind. For instance, we ask clients what their desired finish is his could be a combination of factors, such as colour, furniture, oor texture y ha ing this information, we can tailor accessories and light fittings to enhance their decor We like to find a balance between aesthetics, practicality and budget. We keep a room’s functionality at the forefront of what we do.” Keith tells us that LED lighting has an ever-increasing role in the work that is carried out. Did you know that by replacing your existing lighting systems with new LEDs, you can increase your lighting’s lifespan and e ciency What’s more, the

payback period can be as little as three years – impressive for such a minor change! Amanda explains that Krp Electrical Ltd keeps up to date with new innovations in technology, styles and operating systems. his can maximise your space’s functionality and complement your uni ue style he team also install e cient, uality brands of heating such as Rointe and Dimplex, to keep you cosy and to welcome you home. When a job is not within the team’s area of expertise, the two are huge advocates of keeping things in ornwall “ ake solar s for instance. A lot of companies that aren’t based here often take on jobs meaning the money doesn’t stay in county y outsourcing the work to local contractors, we’re helping to boost the Cornish economy whilst supporting local trade, which is really important to us.” So, if you are thinking of improving the way your home utilises energy in the colder months ahead, with over 30 years’ experience in the industry and a strong a nity for customer ser ice, rp lectrical Ltd could have the answer you’re looking for.

The team at Cotton Mills take us through evolving interior design trends as we look towards 2018.

W

e all know that some design trends come along, peak and then disappear quicker than you can say Artex, but other trends develop and mature. Here is a quick look at some of those morphing trends that will take us into the new year.

Scandi into Nordic “We are very used to the cool greys, sheepskins and light wood of simple Scandinavian styling,” explains Liselle Milner of Cotton Mills. “The shift into what is being termed Nordic style sees the wood tones darkening to walnut and mango and deerskins introducing more warmth. Natural colours like deep greens are coming through in many of the new collections along with plaids and herringbone wools. Think chunky textures, natural materials and traditionally handcrafted accessories.”

Copper into brass These warm metallic tones have probably become popular because of the many years we have spent at the mercy of the dominant chrome phase. “Copper accessories have been very ‘in’ over the last few years but we are increasingly seeing the return of brass as the metal of choice. Brass is set off so beautifully against some of the dark, rich colours that are so on trend at the moment, it is easy to see the appeal.”

Wooden poles into painted poles There has been a great appetite for painted poles, which has which has seen many of the designer pole companies offering custom ‘any colour’ options. “What is new about the trend,” says Liselle, “is that we are now seeing ranges of painted poles in some lovely soft greys and Farrow & Ball inspired neutrals without the designer price tags, making this look much more accessible on a budget.”

Metallics into rustic metallics Rustic metallic is a term for a design that is created to look like aged metal, be it corroded mirror, oxidised copper or rusted chrome. “Although the metallic looking fabric and wallpaper trends ha e not been as in uential in Cornwall as they have in other parts of the country, the development into rustic metallics makes this trend a lot more usable in Cornwall’s country and coastal environment.” If you would like any help and advice on how to incorporate any of the coming seasons trends into your own project, the Cotton Mills team will be happy to hear from you.

ABOVE Expect to see lots of metallic hues, with brass supplanting copper as the tone of choice BELOW Nordic style brings in natural colours like deep greens and dark wood tones such as walnut and mango

ABOVE The Duette blind forms a hexagonal tube that traps air within, providing excellent insulation, whether keeping cool in the summer or trapping the heat in over the winter

MAIN The perfect combination of style and function

W

ith it’s stunning scenery and wonderful quality of light, we are seeing a trend in Cornwall moving towards having homes with larger windows and doors to take in our beautiful views. Whilst this allows more light into the property it provides challenges when regulating temperature and the harsh suns rays can cause fading to fabrics. This problem can easily be sol ed by fitting Duette pleated blinds in your home. Westcountry Blinds, with workshops and a showroom based in Hayle, has been crafting blinds in the region for more than 20,000 of its customers over the past 16 years. The highly skilled team of makers and fitters ha e around 25 years’ experience in the industry. Duette blinds are made from polyester and form a honeycomb structure of cells. They work by using two layers of material that get attached to create a layer of air that helps insulate the home. While they look like standard pleated shades, they are a definite upgrade, with a sleek look and plenty of additional benefits One of the best features of Duette shades is the insulation they add to the window. The long, open channels trap air at the window, insulating the room from the hot summer air and the cold winter winds. In fact, the ‘R-value’ (a measurement of the resistance of the shade to transfer heat) can almost double, simply by adding the most energye cient cellular shade to the window In the winter, Duette Honeycomb Shades can save up to 12% on heating energy. Duette shades have won several awards and a first class rating for their temperature control features. They also help shade your home by reducing heat radiation in the summer months by 78% and have extremely high sound-absorbing properties for acoustic comfort, even when there is a large amount of glass, ceramic and concrete in the room.

Westcountry Blinds is among a handful of companies in the UK able to offer new innovative operating systems using Duette fabrics, which are supplied to retail customers and the trade. Some of the new systems available are SmartCord and LiteRise. SmartCord is a revolutionary and patented cord lifting system. It features a retractable pull cord that maintains a constant length (no more dangling cords) for effortless operation. LiteRise is a cordless system that raises and lowers the blind with the touch of a finger Its proprietary design holds the shades securely in any position. LiteRise reduces potential safety hazards, offering more user comfort and a contemporary streamlined appearance. Both these systems are available in 25mm pleats and come in a wide range of colours to choose from; the fabric can also be specified with room darkening’ for dim-out quality or ‘room shading’ for temperature control and privacy. Wires and cords are all hidden, providing a very clean look. The hardware is available in white or anthracite. Duette blinds are simple to use and incredibly child-friendly. They’re also easy to install and require very low maintenance, simply dusting off or sponging off as required. So make your home beautiful and practical. For more information on Duette, give the Westcountry Blinds team a call, or pop into the Hayle showroom and see them in action for yourself!

ude Windows & Conservatories can help you transform your property into your dream home. The familyrun business was started in 1995 and has grown over the last two decades into the well-established company it is now, with all staff ualified and employed by the company. Whether you need new windows or doors or would like some valuable extra space adding to your home through a stylish, functional conservatory, Bude Windows & Conservatories can help you. The team pride themselves in offering a wide range of uality gla ing products and expert fitting to suit all budgets. “We are always looking for the most new and innovative products on the market; quality is a must for our products,” explains co-owner Lorraine Britton. Whether you choose PVCu, wood or aluminium, rest assured that the products are durable, look great and will last for years to come. “We are so confident that we e en offer a ten year guarantee,” adds Lorraine. Despite growth, it remains very much a family business to this day. Alan and Lorraine’s son, Daniel, joined the company ten years ago, training as a mason, before becoming a ualified window installer “ his year aniel has taken over as our sales advisor,” continues Lorraine. “But he is not your typical double glazing salesman; he is always available and carries out site visits to ensure that the installation is running smoothly and that you are totally happy. He’ll call again when the installation is complete. He is not an order taker who you never see again!” Working in both the public and private sectors, the company covers all of mid and north Cornwall, and mid and north Devon. HOTTEST TEAM

in Cornwall

We meet some of the team at Kernow Fires, to learn a bit more about the people behind this inspiring independent company.

MAIN The Kernow Fires team at the friendly Wadebridge showroom

I

t’s always nice to put a face to a name. In fact, it’s all the more important in these days of increasing computer automation, where the only conversation you get out of a trip to the supermarket is a polite prerecorded request to “please remove your item from the bagging area”. Ultimately, despite the convenience of online shopping, phone apps for every conceivable need, and self-check-out tills, it’s people that make all the difference in creating an experience, one that is tailored to you – nothing beats that personal touch that only humans can provide. So, as I arrive at Kernow Fires’ showroom in Wadebridge, it’s a relief to receive a friendly welcome from all the team, followed by a personalised guided tour of the impressive showroom he first thing I notice is the warmth emanating from one of the stoves, accompanied by the nostalgic, heartwarming aroma of burning wood – not an overpowering, in-your-face sensation, just a light and gentle background note that adds to the ambiance of the room, along with the gentle chatter from the team and customers. As Kelly shows me around, I notice how the showroom has been cleverly designed to feel like you literally have stepped into someone’s

sitting room – you can see that the intention is not simply to display the stoves themselves in isolation, but present the bigger picture. It’s extremely effective. I’m introduced to Managing Director Simon, who explains the ethos. “You don’t just want a row of stoves – context is everything. So that’s why we put everything into perspective of how it could look when installed in a home.” The attention to detail in the high-end stoves is truly incredible – some include drop shadows to create hidden vents. Many are forged out of a single piece of metal to create a seamless finish, whether with sharp edges or smooth curves. Other neat touches include soft close features, options for plenty of aesthetic customisation, and stoves perfect to create a chic Scandinavian look. After a quick tour, I’m introduced to ce anager ae, the self confessed problemsol er ae not only pro ides technical support; she deals with anything that needs a decision, identifying problems and finding out the solution (if she doesn’t have the answer to hand). “It’s a bit like detective work,” she says. ae is affable and instantly warming just like the showroom she is responsible for. She has broad and wide-ranging product

knowledge, and talks passionately about the company and products. One wonders which stove she would choose in her own house. “I lo e the ais’ the uality is second to none, it burns beautifully, all the little details come together to make it something special.” ae works across both locations, here in Wadebridge and the other showroom in Pool, edruth, ha ing been with the company for three years I’m keen to disco er from ae the best bit about coming to work at Kernow Fires. ae answers without hesitation “ ealing with customers and people – I know it probably sounds like a cliché but it’s so true!” She continues: “Simon is always thinking of new things to do, but we all have a big impact and he is open to ideas from the team. We work well together, and always know how to lift each other up when we need it. We’re very serious about what we do, but we don’t take ourselves too seriously – that’s the best way to be in any business!” It’s clear that ae’s not afraid to get stuck in and do the work “ ae’s like a swan, says Kelly, “she always looks composed and graceful on the outside, but there’s a lot of work going on, behind the scenes.” Typically self effacing, ae interjects “ o, more like

a duck!” she laughs. The rapport among the team is infectious; you can tell they have a lot of fun, while knowing their trade inside out. In any business with people at its heart, downtime is e ually important ae’s fa ourite beach is Gwithian and Godrevy. “It’s never too populated, and there are great places to eat nearby – I love to eat anywhere with a view.” ae lo es walks with the dog, to places like Maenporth. “You can’t be bored in Cornwall!” she says ae is just one of the many bubbly, knowledgeable members of the Kernow Fires team and I wish I had more time to get to know e eryone s I lea e, I find myself drifting off to the thought of my own dream woodburner that I hope to install one day. When I finally do, I know exactly where I’ll be headed y first, and only, stop will be to the friendly, professional but fun team at Kernow Fires – the ideal choice to help design my dream fireplace

wned and operated by husband and wife team David and Jo Retallack, Retallack Kitchens prides itself on not only producing beautifully finished kitchens to any budget, but tailoring its service to you, the customer’s aspirations and needs. If you’re looking for your dream kitchen and want quality customer service, then Retallack Kitchens can help you. David and Jo want the whole process to be stress free for you, which is why they work with you, every step of the way. They believe that kitchens are a very personal thing and that – at the risk of using an old cliché – the kitchen is the heart of the home. David says: “Kitchen products have impro ed dramatically o er the last fi e years. Electric cooking technology has advanced, with gas no longer being the preferred choice. You’ve also got items like kettle taps, one of the latest additions to the industry. Since installing one of these in our own home over a year ago, our kettle has sat in the cupboard collecting dust!” What’s more, according to David, storage solutions and lighting are much more user friendly, stylish, and malleable, meaning they can be incorporated into your kitchen

without any detrimental effect on the style of the finished article e also belie es that, as well as matching your needs, a new kitchen’s style needs to match the property. e laughs “ ou’ll understand when you meet me that I’m ne er in uenced by the latest trends! Between my wife and I, we often surprise our customers with some of our ideas, however we always meet their brief, whether it’s led by style, function or budget. Each design is unique and led by the customer.” Retallack Kitchens not only provides you with paper plans but is the first company in Cornwall to offer 3D surround technology. This means that you can be sent virtual, computer generated images of your own design, giving you the chance to walk around your new kitchen before your order is even placed. So, why not give David and Jo a call? After all, seeing is believing!

We discover the secrets to one of life’s most pleasurable investments, with vehicle finance expert, Ignition.

hether it’s a ‘Back to the Future’ DeLorean, James Bond’s Aston Martin or Ferris Bueller’s Ferrari, most of us have a dream car we would love to own to help make life taste just that little bit sweeter. ne ornwall based ehicle finance pro ider is helping to transform its clients’ dreams into reality by providing innovative solutions for funding aspirational vehicles of all shapes and sizes, models and ages. Ignition has been established in Truro for more than 13 years, and in that time has carved out a sound reputation for providing competiti e finance deals for hundreds of high-value prestige and classic cars from topof-the-range sports cars to vintage collectables. According to Managing Director, Alan Tutte, whilst some consider aspirational vehicles an indulgence, they can in fact also prove a fruitful investment. “We recently helped a client fund a very rare, classic car,” explains Alan. “He was delighted with his purchase, as it fulfilled a childhood dream, but was even more delighted when the vehicle had appreciated in value by some £500,000 less than a year later.”

As a direct lender, Ignition prides itself on its personal and confidential ser ice, and as a result, enjoys long-term relationships with many of its customers. With decisionmaking undertaken in-house, the team can focus on understanding the particular requirements of each individual and tailor a suitable solution. Packages available include hire purchase, vehicle lease and personal contract hire, as well as a wide range of specific funding solutions including refinancing of other assets or securing bridging loans. The principal aim is to maximise spending potential whilst minimising repayments. One of Ignition’s regular customers is CEO of a manufacturing business, who has been using Ignition to help finance his own private collection of prestige cars, as well as numerous vehicles for the business, for over a decade. His business vehicles include a eet of commercial ehicles, as well as around ten company cars for employees. But his real passion is his private collection of top-of-the-range sports cars, which include a Lamborghini and a Ferrari. The latest addition to the collection, and one

The most powerful four-door car in the world, the Mulsanne Speed is both ultra-luxurious and fast. IN THE COUNTRY Put the magic back into your Christmas shop by heading to Trevince’s Country House Christmas.

DISCOVER MORE Trevince’s Country House Christmas takes place from Friday 24th to Sunday 26th November, and again from Friday 1st to Sunday 3rd December, between 10am and 4pm each day.

D

esigned by Cornish architect James Piers St Aubyn and having remained in the same family for 20 generations, Trevince Country House dates back to the 1200s. Trish and Richard Stone, who live at the house with their three children, are delighted to open it to the public for Christmas, having scoured the country and beyond to bring you the most exceptional products, the likes of which you won’t find on an a erage day’s shopping. “We love to showcase and support local designers,” Trish tells us. “But we also want to offer our customers unique gifts and homewares from around Europe, as well as from the UK, giving them a truly outstanding choice for the toughest shopping challenge of the year.” As you know, we have a fascination, perhaps even an obsession with discovering the wealth of talented designers and artisans that Cornwall produces, and so it seems does Trevince. This year, among the many to be featured are Holly Young and Victoria Walker. Holly has become known for her stunning hats and headgear, as well as natural feather brooches, beautifully made and certain to become a key piece in the wardrobes of many. ictoria specialises in fine kinetic jewellery, inspired by seedpods and owers

Her signature lockets feature tiny articulated owers that emerge and unfold into bloom when revealed by the wearer. They’re absolutely gorgeous. In addition to the three usual showrooms, Trevince’s billiard room will be transformed into a Pandora’s box of delights for children and young teens. Meanwhile, the Gothic style hall will sparkle with thousands of Christmas tree baubles and the drawing room and library, with their warm and welcoming log fires, will showcase chic gifts for ladies of all ages, as well as those typically ‘hard to buy for’ men in your life. Adding to the festive spectacle will be the 15-foot family Christmas tree, festooned with handmade ower bursts of pheasant feathers made by Trish, which will grace the three-storey hall. We speak to Richard, who tells us: “We have two Christmases: One very public one, which we’re delighted to share with the thousands of people who visit us, and a more intimate one with just us and our three children It’s di cult to say which we all enjoy the most!” So, if you’ve yet to get ahead of the Christmas shopping game, why not meet us there? We certainly don’t want to miss it!

The perfect flooring solution used by Cornwall’s finest chefs in the county’s top professional kitchens.

W

e’ve long been fans of the amazing resin-bound drives from Oltco, which not only look fantastic but are incredibly low-maintenance too – a guaranteed way to become the envy of all your neighbours. What I didn’t know much about, however, until recently, was how this technology is being applied in some of the top kitchens, not just throughout Cornwall but worldwide. In fact, it turns out that in the professional catering industry, resin is the fastest growing industrial product on the market, a craze imported from the US, where it has already taken the nation by storm. The traditional system used on professional kitchen oors is inyl, which will easily split or warp, for example, if a knife or hot pan is

dropped – something that happens a lot in some kitchens! – which then allows water to get underneath the ooring and lift it up Equally, vinyl is much more susceptible to changes in temperature, causing cracking and stretching – again, not ideal in a kitchen environment. By its nature, it also has seams which – you’ve guessed it – are another potential source of weakness. esin ooring, on the contrary, is much more practical, easy to clean and hygienic, with a surface that helps to repel bacteria. What’s more it’s seamless and anti-slip, making it perfect for the commercial kitchen. Indeed, it’s so good that it caught the eye of acclaimed chef Paul Ainsworth, who has utilised it in the kitchen of his celebrated No 6 restaurant in Padstow.

Two of Newquay’s best spots for admiring the ocean get the Oltco treatment: the balcony at Hotel California, and the terrace of Lewinnick Lodge

eing well respected for using the finest, locally-sourced ingredients in his cooking, and being meticulous in his preparation, it’s only logical that Paul would apply the same ethos to his kitchen and tools – a state of the art setup, befitting his ichelin star, in which to cook up his latest culinary masterpieces. ure, choice of ooring is not exactly the most exciting part of a chef’s job, but as with all things you start with the foundations and then build upwards! We caught up with Paul, to get his thoughts. “A kitchen is a high-pressure environment, a constant hive of activity – everything needs to perform at its very best, from the chefs themsel es to the oor they walk on ur sleek new resin ooring from ltco is the ultimate finishing touch Paul is not the only star in catering to fall for Oltco’s charms. Pavilion, an artisan

bakery that has already proved a roaring success across London, is bringing its delicious Sri Lankan-inspired sourdough breads and fresh coffee to Newquay. Look out for the fantastic new bakery, the entrance of which features Oltco’s stunning resin polyurethane screed ooring So, here’s some food for thought: the next time you head to your favourite restaurant or café, tucking into the catch of the day, just remember that the quality local produce and Cornish craftsmanship behind the experience may not be exclusively limited to what is served on your plate.

National awards, a royal visit and an emphasis on fine fish and fun make 2017 a year to remember for Falmouth’s Harbour Lights. MAIN Everybody’s favourite double act: fish and chips!

THE CHEERFUL

I

t’s been another remarkable year for Falmouth’s famous and unique eaterie Harbour Lights – and not just because it is the UK’s reigning top ‘Independent Fish & Chip Restaurant’. That award, bestowed at the industry’s glitzy ‘Oscars’ in London in January, has enabled proud owners Pete and Sue Fraser to do more than just celebrate the quality of their food and service with locals and holidaymakers. They’ve also used their time in the spotlight to share their passion for this precious part of Cornish and British cuisine, and to highlight the industry causes and values of sustainability which make fish and chips so special to them and the 180,000 customers they feed each year. Their restaurant has even attracted royal approval – a visit by the Countess of Wessex in September was just the latest special event in a whirlwind year. Her Royal Highness enjoyed tasting a ariety of ornish fish and declared mackerel as her favourite. “The National Fish & Chip Awards judges commended our experienced fryers, friendly staff and very high standards,” says Pete. “But we were particularly delighted they recognised our commitment to innovating to keep things new and fresh for our customers.

Falmouth’s Harbour Lights gets the royal seal of approval from Sophie, Countess of Wessex

“That’s something we’re really carrying through this year. We want to spread the message that we are so proud to be part of this great British tradition and industry, say thank you to our wonderful town, and make sure our customers really enjoy the simple pleasure of a cracking plate of fish and chips, adds Pete, who with Sue took over the reins of the Harbour Lights with it’s enviable views over the harbour on Customs House Quay 17 years ago. The team kicked off the year’s fun by pegging their prices back to what they were in 2000 for one day in February. They sold more than , portions of fish and chips, meaning a piece of fish came out of the fryer every 15 seconds and they used 1.2 tonnes of potatoes for chips! Pete and Sue also launched special sustainability workshops held in the restaurant for local children in partnership with SciArt Solutions. Three primary schools have already visited to take part in fun activities highlighting the importance of making good fish purchasing choices ll arbour ights’ fish is responsibly sourced and has either Marine Stewardship ouncil certification or is recommended by Cornwall Wildlife Trust’s Cornwall Good Seafood Guide. All their chips are made from Cornish potatoes, largely from Colwyn Farm, Perranwell Station. And in May, Pete and Sue, who also own Fraser’s restaurant in Penzance, were back in London for another national award. The Fisherman’s Mission recognised their

outstanding work in raising £12,000 for the charity, which supports all workers – employed and retired – in what remains the most dangerous peacetime occupation in the UK. The cash they and their dedicated team raised added up to the biggest total from any outlet in the south west. It was raised largely through the restaurant’s participation in the Fish Friday fundraising event every June. This year’s event added another £2,000. Sue explains: “That cause is very close to our heart and we were particularly proud of our team who donated their tips on Fish Friday to bump up the total. We also love supporting lots of local events and festivals too.” The restaurant promises much more fun before the year is out, including starting the first e er International ushy ea ay, a celebration of that essential side dish which will see Harbour Lights partnering with chippies in Canada and the USA among others to pay homage to the humble but delicious pea. “There’s never a dull moment here,” concludes Pete with smile. “We just feel so blessed to be in this business and in this beautiful place, and we want our customers to share our happiness.”

for the next sitting. When we introduce ourselves, it becomes clear that one of them is Ben Quinn– founder of the canteen, along with his wife Samantha.

Just some of the delights we’d soon be relishing at Woodfired Canteen

Woodfired anteen specialises in using local produce, particularly here in Cornwall, to provide unique and interactive dining experiences across Cornwall and the UK. While they often use meats local to where they travel, they usually stick to Cornish fruit and veg. Samantha explains: “It’s something we’ve got a lot of faith in, and our suppliers always provide us with the very best.” s we take our seats and await the first course, we find oursel es chatting with other attendees – people from all walks of life, from local and afar, yet all here to enjoy the same things – good food and cider! Finally, as Ben steps behind the counter and addresses the tent, he explains that this is entirely the point – getting to know new and interesting people o er the finest food and drink

Over the next hour or so, the courses come and go, each paired with a different cider and each as full of a our as the last The experience is really informative, with descriptions from Ben as we enjoy each course detailing how and why each has been put together. He’s warm, welcoming and knows how to entertain a crowd, even if he is contending with the BBC stage’s sound system! If I have to choose, my fa ourite is the woodfired chicken thigh paired with Rattler, but a lot has to be said for the mussels that are ser ed as the first course. Cooked simply in cider with a few sprigs of rosemary – I have to say – they’re the best I’ve ever tasted!

DID YOU KNOW? The Woodfired Canteen pops up at various locations across Cornwall and can even be booked for your event or to come to your workplace. Visit the website for upcoming appearances or to make contact with Ben and Samantha

Once we’ve polished off the last round of plates, we feel ourselves relaxing and easing into the festival vibe. It could be the warm hospitality, or the varied samples of cider we’ve been presented with. Personally, I think it’s a mix of the two, and after taking some shots of the Woodfired family and saying our farewells for the weekend, my partner J and I make our way, instinctively it would seem, to the bar. The bar – busy, as they tend to be at festivals, and slippery, thanks to the gallons of mud owing beneath our feet here’s a huge range of cider on offer, so much so that it would be dangerous to even think about trying them all, so I settle for one called Porth by St Ives Cider. J chooses a refreshing elder ower tipple, inspired by the third course back in the Canteen. And the night goes from there! We vigilantly stick to the same cider for the evening, for fear of what might happen in

the mud should we start to mix and match. We spend the dusky hours bouncing from stage to stage, enjoying the offerings of upcoming talent at the BBC Introducing stage, before dancing to the blurred lines between bluegrass, folk and country music from Cornish band Flats & Sharps. The evening ends on a set by Scouting for Girls – eagerly awaited by J – and by this point, we know that we’ve got everything we wanted out of this wonderful little festival. Indeed, even though we have the whole next day to enjoy; with mud-sodden shoes and what’s bound to be a sore head in the morning, we instead lift our final drinks and toast “ o the same again next year!”

We meet Zeb Luke Gethen of Falmouth’s brand new salon Zebrafinch Hair.

hen we heard about a brand new designer hair salon opening up in Falmouth, we were obviously keen to discover more. So, we’ve tracked down owner and hair designer Zeb Luke Gethen, who tells us more about his story. Originally from Nottingham, Zeb moved to Cornwall from London last November and set up home in Falmouth. With over 15 years spent in the industry, it’s fair to say that Zeb knows his stuff when it comes to hair! Zeb has worked in Nottingham, Manchester and London in a range of high-end salons with some of the biggest hairdressers in the industry, including Nicky Clarke. Over the years, he has worked on fashion photo shoots, London Fashion Week, Cannes Film Festival, and for Fashion TV. Zeb specialises in wedding hair, having styled hundreds of weddings around the UK over his career. “This has always been a passion for me,” explains Zeb, “and I love to be there to help make people’s big day as perfect as it can be.” The new shop opened this September, after Zeb spent a couple of months renovating it with a little help from his parents, putting the

character back into the Georgian building. Zeb tells us: “I think your surroundings are very important and I take a lot of inspiration from everything around me, so I wanted to make sure it was exactly what I wanted it to be... Beautiful heritage colours, character features and classic furniture; just a space to relax in without the usual stark lighting and pumping music of your regular salons.” ebrafinch air is open for both women and men. “We’re all about making you feel and look amazing in a friendly, relaxed environment,” continues Zeb. “Appointment times are left slightly longer than usual so you don’t feel rushed and can enjoy the whole experience We try to be as exible as possible to accommodate you.” So whatever the occasion – a wedding, big birthday celebration, or simply because you want to look fabulous, why not book yourself in for a styling with Zeb now.

We take our joints for granted, but if you have ever injured your knees, you’ll know how challenging it is. There’s help at hand from Duchy Hospital’s experts.

nee injuries can occur during a range of sports such as skiing, tennis, squash, football and rugby. They can also be caused by more mundane activities like tripping over the cat, running after the kids, gardening or perhaps some over-enthusiastic DIY. One of the most common types of knee injury, which accounts for around 40% of all sporting injuries, is to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). The ACL is a tough band of tissue joining the thigh bone to the shin bone at the knee joint. It helps control the back and forward and rotational movement of the lower leg and runs diagonally through the inside of the knee, giving stability to the knee joint. Common causes of an ACL injury include landing badly from a jump, stopping abruptly, changing direction suddenly or a collision, such as a football or rugby tackle. If the ACL is torn, the knee can become unstable and tends to simply give way, either with sporting activities or sometimes with the activities of daily living. This can make it di cult to perform some mo ements like turning on the spot. It can also be painful. The good news is that it is possible to surgically reconstruct the ACL and this operation is available from expert surgeons at Duchy Hospital here in Cornwall.

Reconstructive ACL surgery Mr Andrew Lee is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Duchy Hospital. He tells us more: “A torn ACL can’t usually be repaired by stitching it back together. However, it can be reconstructed by grafting [attaching] new tissue onto it. “The ACL can be reconstructed by removing what remains of the torn ligament and replacing it with a tendon from, for example, the hamstring or patellar tendon. ACL reconstruction is a common procedure with a success rate for stabilising the knee of about 95%. Patients need to do a lot of physiotherapy/rehabilitation both before and after the procedure. “The operation takes about an hour and generally patients stay in overnight, although occasionally this can be done as a day case. Most people do not need a brace after surgery, and most are off crutches two to three weeks post-surgery. Return to sport after ACL reconstruction varies in its timing, but generally I recommend a year for contact sports or sports that involve a lot of twisting.”

tepping into the Old Carriage Works in Lostwithiel, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’ve just walked into a boutique country hotel or luxury spa. With beautiful arched windows, revealed stonework offset by chic white walls and designer lighting hanging from the ceiling, it certainly doesn’t resemble the typical dental surgery. But then, as you quickly discover, this isn’t your average practice. In fact, it transpires that this very building was originally designed by the great Victorian isionary runel a truly fitting location for this inspiring business. Lostwithiel Dental Surgery has grown from humble origins – founder Finley Bason operating out of a wooden shed on a former railway platform – just over a decade ago, to become one of the largest practices in Cornwall. Even more impressively, this has been done largely by word of mouth. The multidisciplinary team, which just became a finalist in the entistry wards, pride themsel es on offering first class dental and facial aesthetic services to both NHS and pri ate patients and the string of fi e star online reviews is clear testament to the fact that the approach is paying off. This is very much a patient centred practice, committed to ensuring that each and every patient is provided with all available options to make an informed choice.

Following the introduction of advanced and specialist services, including its own CBCT scanner, Lostwithiel Dental Surgery can cater for all patients needs under one roof, without needing to be referred. What’s more, with all surgeries on the ground oor, and plenty of dedicated patient parking, the practice has been designed to be as accessible as possible. Community plays a central role in Lostwithiel Dental Surgery’s ethos. The team works closely with local schools to help educate the next generation on the importance of prevention and maintaining good dental health. Equally, the surgery provides a support network for other practices by offering its services to dentists to help enhance their experience and skillsets. So, if you are looking for a forward thinking surgery that specialises in standard and cosmetic dentistry, tooth whitening, dental implants or facial aesthetics, give the Lostwithiel Dental Surgery a call today.

S

ince opening in 2016, MEDfacials has been helping clients’ skin feel fresh, new and healthier than ever before, with an already-impressive track record for visible and long-term results. Founded by Dr Joe Stolte, MEDfacials specialises in using the latest scientifically based skin and medical aesthetic treatments. The menu includes a broad spectrum of treatments, from advanced skincare products and facials, to cosmetic injectables and nonsurgical skin rejuvenation using medical grade technology. After a detailed medical consultation and facial assessment, a treatment plan is developed and customised to your specific needs ne treatment that’s pro ed to be fiercely popular among MEDfacial’s clients is its signature Fire & Ice Facial, a resultsdriven clinical facial treatment designed to resurface and treat problematic skin, reduce fine lines and encourage cellular renewal Fire & Ice Facials are multi-stepped, with two professional treatment masques that are combined with carefully selected iS Clinical products to optimise results. Perhaps the reason for its popularity is that it bridges the gap between a mild facial and an invasive peel, all with no downtime! MEDfacial’s team also offers treatments that include dermal and lip fillers, muscle relaxing injections and alternati es to otox again, a very popular choice.

r tolte explains “ any of my patients come to me with concerns around the periorbital (eye) area, such as fine lines, wrinkles and textural issues However, some aren’t ready for injectable treatments and prefer the idea of a noninvasive approach to rejuvenating these areas.” This is where Radara™ technology comes in. e tells us “ adara is ideal as it provides an alternative to injectables. It uses a combination of innovative microchannelling technology and topical hyaluronic acid. The micro-channels enable a deeper skin penetration of topicals to deliver the acid where it’s needed the most,” which to you, the client, means increased skin hydration as well as restored smoothness and plumpness of your skin. If you feel it’s time to put some life back into your skin, but you want to avoid needles and invasive treatments, why not contact Joe and the team? He is free for appointments on Wednesdays, Fridays and aturdays, so get in touch and find out how your skin can be transformed.

S

t Ives has long been famous for its golden beaches, cobbled streets, artists and its quality of light, but until recently, perhaps not sea shanties. All that has changed since the formation of ‘Bamaluz Bootleggers’. Now the sound of songs such as the beautiful ‘Cadgwith Anthem’ or the more rousing ‘Spanish Ladies’ is regularly heard along the harbour front or in the local pubs. When the 2017 St Ives Shanty Shout takes place on 24th and 25th November there will be no escape from ‘sailors, pirates or smugglers’ all singing their own unique take on shanties. Travelling from as far as Yorkshire, over 20 groups encompassing a diverse range of sizes and styles will be participating, including The Oggy Men, Cadgwith Singers, Figurehead and Kimber’s Men. They hope to raise money for two very deserving charities, the RNLI and Children’s Hospice South West whilst at the same time providing two days of entertainment, hopefully with lots of audience participation! The event, hosted by Bamaluz Bootleggers, takes place in The Castle Inn, The Golden Lion, The Surf Shack and The Pilchard Press starting on Friday evening. 2016 saw Bamaluz Bootleggers host the first t I es hanty hout when a small handful of groups came to sing at The Castle Inn. Due to the popularity of that event it was decided to do it again, but bigger!

Bamaluz Bootleggers was formed in 2015 by people passionate about restoring the tradition of pub singing in St Ives... and having fun. The name derives from the small beach near the harbour. The group can usually be found in The Castle Inn on a Thursday night after rehearsal or at any time when four or more are gathered together and all are welcome to come and sing along with them. For those of the group who were born and bred in St Ives there is an added poignancy in singing the songs of the sea, especially those written by the Cornish Bard, John Barber, who lived in St Ives. The song ‘Peter’s Choice’ evokes memories of the hard life the fishermen had when boys as young as nine had to go to work to support their family. Happily, there are plenty of upbeat songs too, usually accompanied by ‘jolly, jolly grog’. So why not head down to St Ives in November and join in the fun? Entry is free and whether you like your singers dressed in civvies, as sailors or even pirates, there should be something just right for you. It promises to be great weekend!

FROM THE EDITOR Welcome to our autumn wedding guide.

106

We have some great ideas to help you plan your special day, from romantic venues to perfecting your hair and accessories. First of all it’s worth thinking about the ‘feel’ you want to create – informal or formal, big and grand, or small and intimate – which will guide you in choosing the venue and style; the memories you want to create for you and your guests. In Cornwall, we are so lucky – you can have a clifftop wedding with fabulous views, a castle as the backdrop or have photos taken on golden sands… it’s all possible. Whatever you want for your special day, I hope our guide helps with some useful ideas.

Many of these memorable scenes are actually filmed at Poldark Mine, near Helston, which also acts as one of the most unusual and atmospheric wedding enues you’re likely to find anywhere This truly unique venue is registered for civil ceremonies both above and below ground. Ceremonies are especially popular in the Holman Chamber of the historic tin mine, candle lit to enhance the atmosphere. Up to 22 guests can be accommodated in the chamber during the ceremony, which can be relayed via a video link to additional guests on the surface. For larger celebrations, a waterside bandstand within the beautiful grounds is decorated. Speak to the team at Poldark Mine to tailor your day exactly how you want it. With plenty of luxurious accommodation available nearby, this really is a wonderful venue, where you can enjoy a touch of the Poldark magic. A VISIONARY IDEA Help your model pupils, with a visit to Reid and Gordon opticians.

ood vision is critical to a child’s early educational, functional, and social development. Parents should be aware that it is essential to address the child’s visual needs as early as possible. Healthy sight can contribute to a healthy start in life. A child’s visual system develops over the first few years of their life mblyopia la y eye) is best treated before the age of four but continued improvement can be made up to the age of seven; after this critical period, perfect vision cannot be achieved. Amblyopia and squints are evident by the age of four and may be detected by the parent, health visitor or a teacher, but if they are not picked up and if a child has an uncorrected refractive error it will impact on the child’s ability to perform well at school. It may also hinder the child in later life to enter certain professions where good eyesight is a prime requirement. The eyes continue to develop during childhood. The majority of children at birth are long sighted hypermetropic which, if within normal limits, will correct itself as the child matures. However if a refractive error is not properly corrected there is a risk of permanently poor vision. Children’s eyes, as well as their visual needs, differ from those of adults in a number of important ways. A child’s immature visual system is more prone

to irreversible damage. It’s therefore important to have your child regularly assessed by a registered optical professional. The main childhood eye problems relate to improper development of the visual system. Conditions such as amblyopia la y eye , strabismus s uint and uncorrected refracti e error short sightedness [myopia], long sightedness and astigmatism) are the most common. They are also all related. If a child has a s uint, or if one eye has a significantly different refractive error from the other, this will lead, if uncorrected, to a la y eye. The less dominant eye is effectively “switched off” and does not develop properly. The child accommodates to use the eye which is least long-sighted which leaves the other eye with reduced visual acuity. In the UK all children under-16 and those under-19 and in full-time education qualify for a free NHS-funded sight test. Remarkably only 22 per cent of under-16s have ever had a sight test. So why not book in a test with Reid and Gordon in Truro now?

More riveting reads from the bookshelf Escape from the cold and curl up with a good book fro our selection of classics old and new. THE STAR TREE

CAPTURED!

Catherine Hyde

Craig Green and Oliver Hurst

With Cornish artist Catherine Hyde returning to the Lighthouse Gallery in Penzance, we revisit her beautifully illustrated book. Sure to make the perfect Christmas present, the evocative artwork perfectly complements the delicate wording of the story. During this journey you will meet some amazing characters, all of which will ignite a sense of fantasy and imagination with the skilfully painted scenes. It might be a lullaby intended for children but we can see adults being soothed into a peaceful slumber with this gentle and well-crafted tale.

Over 300 years old, this daring and exciting tale follows the true story of the adventures of Cornishman Thomas Pellow, who left on a ship from Penryn when he was 11 and didn’t return for nearly 25 years! Not for the faint of heart, this tale covers kidnap, shipwreck, imprisonment, captive ser ice, battlefield bra ery and a daring escape! The striking illustrations add even more excitement to the book, perfectly capturing the dramatic events that unfold. This really is a thoroughly thrilling tale for older children, and is all the more impressive for being true!

THE MOUSEHOLE CAT

Antonia Barber and Nicola Bayley Another classic to enjoy throughout the winter months, and any other time of year, is The Mousehole Cat. This truly iconic story speaks to the Cornish soul as the sea is captured perfectly in both the artwork and the story. Whether you are reading this again or sharing it for the first time with a loved one, this book is the apex of Cornish storytelling. So, why not wait for a particularly stormy night and experience this book as Tom Bawcock would have, amidst Cornish wind and rain.

PIGS MIGHT SURF

Olly Miles and Anna Louise Pigs might not be able to y, but in this classic children’s book, they might surf! This curly tale offers a truly inspiring read as it encourages children to follow their dreams, while utilising a fun filled, and often hilarious, story. This book will surely entice children into trying the fantastically ornish sport of surfing, because if Bailie the pig can do it, anyone can! So, whether you know someone who loves to surf, or who love pigs, this book is the perfect gift this holiday season!

EVERY SECOND We visit Michael Spiers in Truro to discover what makes a Patek Philippe so much more than just a watch.

W

ith over 175 years at the forefront of haute horologerie, Patek Philippe has spent the best part of two centuries quietly sustaining a remarkably simple vision: to build unique, beautiful watches that last not just a lifetime, but from generation to generation. Patek Philippe is Geneva’s last family owned independent watch manufacturer, allowing the creative freedom to produce what connoisseurs argue to be the finest timepieces in the world Visiting the jewellers, Michael Spiers in Truro, which stocks a range of beautiful Patek Philippe timepieces, you notice that strong parallels can be drawn between the two companies – both are family owned with a deep heritage, a great eye for detail and shared key values. Seeing a Patek Philippe watch in the esh, you get a real feel for the quality of craftsmanship and attention to detail that is invested in each piece. These are not just watches, but things of real beauty; timeless pieces of jewellery that exude elegance, while remaining effortlessly understated. We’ve selected two watches in particular that underscore Patek Philippe’s quality and style, starting with the ladies’ Calatrava ‘Timeless White’ (Ref 7122), available in 18-carat white gold or rose gold. This modern, all-white diamond-set mechanical ladies’ timepiece showcases a highly innovative

design which even decades from now will retain its feminine grace when it is one day handed down to a granddaughter. The Annual Calendar Chronograph (Ref 5960/1A) for men, meanwhile, is sophistication personified With its grace and technical panache, it’s destined to become a bestseller that derives fresh charisma from the noblesse and cool lustre of stainless steel. If you are looking for a timepiece that speaks volumes in gentle tones, then we recommend a visit to Michael Spiers now to see the range of Patek Philippe timepieces for yourself. Life is there to be treasured, so make every second count.

Deeply Loved by Mel Chambers “Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage” – Loa Tzu. Using ancient 13th Century inlay techniques, carved not painted, each tile is individually hand car ed into wet clay, inlaid, gla ed and fired over three days. No tile can be replicated, making each bespoke piece a truly one of a kind, visual presence in your home. Commissions are welcome.

This autumn the galleries celebrate the work of painter Robyn Denny across both venues. Denny was one of an acclaimed group who transformed British art in the 1950s and into the ‘70s, leading it into the international mainstream. His resolutely urban, large-scale abstract paintings captured the cool, modernising mood of the time.

The talk that Robert is most eagerly anticipating is by Shawn Brown – a dyslexic inventor who passionately believes that young people need to learn in ways that embrace the natural differences in their brains. From his experience in building kids’ inventions and training dyslexia organisations, Shawn will explore how neurodiversity is linked to innovation, yet widely overlooked in our education system. Robert adds: “In education, we need to embrace that everyone is different and find ways to help e eryone achie e their potential. This is crucial if we are to provide a workforce which is right for our fastchanging society.”

We speak with Robert Camp, Managing Partner of the ornish law firm, who picks the talk that he is most looking forward to. TED started in America more than 30 years ago. Since, it has inspired local, independently organised events around the world. Robert explains how Stephens Scown got involved: “TED is all about ideas worth spreading, and now more than ever I think we need that. TED Talks and TEDx events give us a chance to take a step back and think about things from someone else’s point of view; to learn something new and make a positive change in the world.” TEDxTruro’s theme this year is ‘Beyond Barriers’, and each of the speakers will bring their own perspective – from discussing how music affects our brains and emotions to exploring diverse topics, including endurance, resilience, inclusion and neurodiversity. Robert continues: “It is fantastic that we have our very own TEDx event in Cornwall now. I really enjoyed going last year – it was such an inspiring day, which sparked so many discussions and conversations among those of us lucky enough to be there. If you enjoy watching TED Talks online, you’ll love experiencing a TEDx event. It’s much more immersive and powerful as you’re watching the talks live and sharing it with

Inspiration and ideas on offer at Cornwall’s only TEDx event.

ADVICE |

LET YOUR HOME HELP YOU We catch up with financial planning expert Matt Begley for some advice on how our homes could be helping our financial future.

P BELOW Matt Begley, Retirement planning expert and MD of Harris Begley Financial Planning

roperty prices in the UK have been on a largely constant upward path over the last 20 years. The average UK property price has almost quadrupled over a 20-year period to sit at , lthough in ation o er the years eats into some of that growth, that’s still a pretty impressive statistic. If we then look at a separate piece of research and consider property values for just the over 65s, across the shorter timeframe of the last seven years, the average 65+ homeowner has gained £66,000 in value. This equates to a rise of £9,400 a year.** So, if you’re considering whether an equity release plan could work for you, then don’t discount the impact that property prices may have over the next 20 years or so. So what are your options? You could opt for a lifetime mortgage and decide not to pay any interest over the lifetime of the loan, enabling you to free up much needed funds to meet other costs, plus it would be one less regular payment to worry about owe er, this benefit could also be a disadvantage, as there will come a time when the ‘compounded interest’ needs to be recovered. Whilst this would only occur when the last plan-holder dies or goes into long-term care, it may have an impact on your beneficiaries, and could add up to a sizeable amount if the loan term runs for a decent number of years. For example, if no interest is paid off, the amount owed on a loan may double after around 13 years. Roll-up or not to roll-up? Let’s then look at an example of what could occur after 13 years, if someone took out an average lump-sum loan of £92,376 at, say fixed interest With the interest accumulating, the loan would double to £185,285 – an increase of £92,909. However,

had they (or perhaps their children, who’d have a vested interest in this) paid off all of the interest each month, then after 13 years the interest payments would have amounted to £65,780. That’s £27,129 less than the roll-up scenario. With some products, it’s possible to go even further by considering paying off some of the capital too, with the ob ious financial benefits Any house price growth? Into this mix, you should add property price considerations over the same 13year period. For this example, we use an average house price of £296,022 for a lump-sum lifetime mortgage borrower.^ If annual house prices continue to rise at the current rate of 3.1%, then after 13 years the property value would be £440,237 – an increase of £144,215. Of course, there’s no guarantee of property price rises, and in ation would need to be considered too, but it is something to throw into the mix in relation to the cost of borrowing. Understandably, these are complex issues so it’s essential that you take advice if you’re looking to release equity from your home. So why not give the team at Harris Begley a call so that they can help guide you through issues.

CHARITY |

Light up a life

This December sees the return of Cornwall Hospice Care’s annual ‘Light up a Life’ events across Cornwall, which give people the chance to remember their loved ones at Christmas.

ì ABOVE Children taking part in the ‘Light up a Life’ service at Truro Cathedral

C

hristmas is often a busy and exciting time of year but for some it can also be a sad time as they remember loved ones who are no longer here. ‘Light up a Life’ enables people to do just that by entering their names in the special books of remembrance and, if they wish, to attend one of the celebration services. This year two brand new services, at Wadebridge and Newquay, have been added to make seven in total across the county. ruro athedral will host the first e ent This popular, traditional Christmas service features performances from a local school as well as readings, prayers and carols. A large screen shows a live feed of the tree on High Cross in darkness and at the end the lights are switched on to symbolise the lives of those being remembered. After the service there is a chance to view the books of remembrance and enjoy some festive refreshments. The service in Truro is then followed by services in St Austell, a new event in Wadebridge, en ance and ayle he final e ent will take place at the Bowgie Inn, Newquay, and is unique to all the others in the series, as it

will follow a nonreligious format. The evening will feature live music and readings with festive refreshments and a chance to view the Newquay Book of Remembrance. You don’t have to have a connection with Cornwall Hospice Care to take part. Registration forms can be picked up in any of the charity’s shops. Alternatively visit the website or give the team a call.
